Methods of abortion

The method used for abortion is dependent on the developmental stage of the baby at the time that the abortion is performed. The most common type of abortion, surgical abortion or suction dilatation and curettage, is performed between 5-13 weeks. At this point, the baby has a heartbeat, fingers, toes, arms and legs.

Scriptural truth As believers of Jesus Christ, our response must be based not on what the world says is acceptable but rather on what the Bible says about life and creation, about sin and about the life we are called to lead as Christians. In this section, we will look at key scripture that conveys God’s will regarding the subject of life. Although abortion is not specifically mentioned in the Bible, there are multiple scriptures that discuss how God created us, the value of life and specific circumstances where the unborn or an infant were

harmed and God’s response. By looking thoroughly at scripture, our position as Christians becomes clear. From the very beginning, we were God’s creation.

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Genesis 1:27 (KJV)

“My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Psalm 139:15-16 NIV

destroy a life created by God? No. In fact, we are commanded not to shed innocent blood, to harm others or commit murder.

Shedding innocent blood The Lord further makes it clear how he values life in Genesis 9:6.

“Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.”

Children, a heritage from the Lord In the New Testament, the Greek word brephos is used to describe the unborn, newborns and youth. In the Old Testament the word used is yeled which means child. These terms are used when describing any child whether unborn, born, a toddler or older child. God recognizes that they are all his children from the moment that He breathes life into that child at conception within the mother’s womb.

“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous— how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” Psalm 139: 13-16 NLT

A fetus or a baby? Scientists use the term fetus to delineate the developmental stage of an unborn child. Referring to a child by their particular developmental stage does not change the fact that they are in fact a child and a person. Each person has value to

God from the moment of creation throughout their life and even after death. “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.” Psalm 127:3 “As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.” Psalm 127: 4-5

Abortion is Sin From multiple verses within scripture, we can see how precious God’s creation is to him. Although abortion is an evil of the contemporary world, the killing of sons or daughters is not new to the world. In the Old Testament, Psalms 106 discusses the great sin of the people of Israel when they fell into a culture of death: “They worshiped their idols, which became a snare to them. They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to false gods. They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood. They defiled themselves by what they did; by their deeds they prostituted themselves. Therefore the LORD was angry with his people and abhorred his inheritance. He gave them into the hands of the nations, and their foes ruled over them. Their enemies oppressed them and subjected them to their power.” Psalms 106: 36-42 NIV Clearly, the shedding of innocent blood is a sin. But what is our role as it pertains to

abortion? What is the role of a Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ? “If you falter in a time of trouble, how small is your strength! Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter. If you say, “But we knew nothing about this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who guards your life know it? Will he not repay everyone according to what they have done?” Proverbs 24:10 NIV

Defeating the enemy The Bible tells us that Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy: “The thief [Satan] does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10 NKJV

Jesus describes Satan as the father of lies “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:4 NIV

Using language to deceive One of the ways that the enemy deceives us is through language. Satan uses language to twist the truth. In the same way that Satan lied to Eve about what would happen if she ate of the Tree of Knowledge, he continues to lie and twist the truth using the media, false teachers and others to spread the culture of death.

Stirring up strife between believers Satan also seeks to divide God’s people by trying to stir up anger between ethnicities and nations.

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” EPHESIANS 6:12 KJV

The abortion industry disproportionately targets poor women and women of color.

Here are some lies we hear every day. My body, my choice! From the moment of conception, there is another (2nd) body growing inside of a woman. For the statement, “My body, my choice to be true,” we would have to be speaking about a pregnancy that involved only 1 body (the mother’s). That is simply not the case. We are not talking about 1 body because women do not have four arms and four legs . Scientifically, factually, from the moment of conception, a second person begins growing inside the mother’s womb. When we kill another person or pay another person to kill another person, that is murder.

A “fetus or product of conception” is not a baby. The term fetus is scientific term that refers to the developmental stage of a human being. Referring to a child by their developmental stage does not make them not human. Neither is there any logic in determining that a person can live or die based on their developmental stage in life. If that were true, we could decide that toddlers could be killed or adolescents.

It’s not a person! It’s a clump of cells! “Upon fertilization, the baby’s DNA is separate from its mother. The baby has a separate heart beat from the mother at just three weeks. At just six weeks, the cerebral cortex is formed. At seven weeks, the baby is hiccupping and kicking. At ten weeks, the baby has distinct fingerprints. The baby is awake when the

mother is asleep. The baby can have a separate sex and blood type from the mother. There is no checkpoint during the pregnancy in which the “clump of cells” magically becomes a human. In some jurisdictions, when a pregnant woman is killed it counts as a double homicide; the law thus recognizing the preborn child is in fact a distinct and separate life. The preborn child is no more a mere “clump of cells” than you or I.1

It’s not a baby until it can survive on its own outside the womb. Personhood is not established based on whether we can survive on our own. If this were true, we could determine that anyone receiving life-saving treatment whether temporary or permanent is not a person and thus can be killed.

It’s legal, so it’s OK. Slavery was also legal for a time in the United States and yet it was morally wrong. Honor killing and genital mutilation are also legal in some other countries and this does not make them morally right.

Abortion is “Reproductive Healthcare”. Healthcare is defined as the improvement of health via prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, illness or injury. First, pregnancy is not a state of illness, injury or disease. Further, any treatment of a pregnant women would mean that the doctor has 2 patients: the mother and child. The ending of one of those patient’s lives via elective abortion is the absolute opposite of improvement of health. 1Klein,

The enemy using scripture Satan will twist the meaning of scripture to try to deceive people. Among some of the more disturbing arguments for abortion are those in which proponents use scripture to try to justify abortion. In this section we will look at some of the often quoted verses and address these deceptions.

The Book of Hosea, Old Testament Claim: Even pregnant women can be slaughtered. Scripture cited: Hosea 13:16 “Samaria shall become desolate; for she has rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women who are pregnant shall be ripped up (Hsa 13:15-16).” FALSE. The prophet Hosea (son of Beeri) prophecies that Samaria (which was the head of Ephraim – one of the ten tribes of Israel) shall become desolate and death will come by the sword to its people. This is a reminder, in prophetic form, from God that the wages of sin (in this case idol worship) is death. When we sin against God, we bring about our own destruction. God does not want to see his children harmed and thus provided Hosea

with prophecy to warn the people of God to turn toward God and turn away from sin. This scripture in no way justifies slaughtering pregnant women. It expresses a scriptural truth and predicted outcome. Do bad things, bad things will happen. This is the nature of a fallen world. When we turn away from God we move out of the protection of God and expose ourselves to the enemy. Here, the prophecy points out the types of things (death by sword and cutting up the people) that occurred during this time period — perpetrated by Israel’s cruel enemies.

Claim: The fetus can be killed too. Scripture cited: Hosea 9:16. “Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even the beloved fruit of their womb.” Hosea 9:16

FALSE. The prophet Hosea again warns of vengeance to the Israelites. This portion of the prophecy uses the analogy of a tree in describing the type of destruction the people will bring upon themselves if they continue with their sinful ways. This again, is an analogy and a warning that when people sin there is a consequence. It is important to note that this is not God’s preferred outcome nor a justification or statement that killing of children is acceptable but rather the direct consequence of turning away from God. In today’s world, if a parent chooses to do drugs and take their child into places with dangerous people. It is likely that this behavior could possibly lead to death of the parent and/or child. We live in a fallen, cause and effect world. Sadly, we see this type of scenario play out often in the news.

Neither of these scriptures state that women can/should be slaughtered or that children (or fetus – which is Latin for small child) can/should be killed.

(murdering or otherwise abusing their wives) without God’s judgement. As strange as this seems to contemporary readers, this was done to protect women.

These verses of scripture are prophetic warnings that sin brings death and that it is the willful action of the people, who turn against God, that bring about this death and destruction. God’s not “OK” with it. If he were, there would be no reason to warn and remind his people.

Claims: 1) When conducting a census, ignore children under one month old. 2) A child less than one month old has no value.

The Book of Numbers and Leviticus, Old Testament

Scripture cited: Numbers 3: 15-16 “Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them.”

Also cited: Leviticus 27:6

Claim: It is permissible to induce a miscarriage. Scripture cited: Numbers 5:21 "Then the priest shall charge the woman with an oath of cursing, and the priest shall say unto the woman, The LORD make thee a curse and an oath among thy people, when the LORD doth make thy thigh to rot, and thy belly to swell;“

FALSE. This scripture is an test for adultery. In this case, if a woman was thought to be unfaithful, (there is no reference that she is pregnant) then by drinking a bitter water, prepared by the priest, her guilt would be revealed by the swelling of her womb. If after drinking the water she was found to be guilty (swollen abdomen) then her womb would no longer be able to conceive. There is NO reference to pregnancy and no reference to miscarriage. The purpose of this test was to place judgement for sin in God’s hands rather than in man’s. In 5:16 the scripture states she is “set before the Lord”. This law prevented jealous husbands from being overcome by anger (if they suspected their wife was guilty) and taking matters into their own hands

“And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver.”

FALSE. Neither of these scripture support abortion any more than the fact that if you have a small child, you can go to the movies and not have to pay for a child under 3. The fact that the small child is free does not mean they have no value. Lev 27:6 is referencing the cost to “buy back” a child that has been dedicated (given) to serve the Lord (in the temple) for a special vow. If the parent wishes to redeem said child they must pay the redemption value. In the case of a child less than 1 month old, no money had to be paid to redeem the child. In Samuel 1:24 Hannah dedicated young Samuel to the Lord. Numbers 3: 15-16 explains there was no need to count a child under the age of one month in the census. Census were taken for purposes of taxation and/or military recruitment. In this case, there was no tax money due for a child under one month.

Neither of these scripture are a reference to the value of a child in God’s eyes. In contrast, the Bible specifically points out in Exodus 21:22-24 that if a pregnant women is harmed (by accident) and she suffers miscarriage, the price is “life for life”. This reflects the truth that God values unborn children at the same value as any other person.

Claims: Live children can be disposed of by stoning, drowning, starvation, cannibalism, burning, stabbing and poison. Scriptures cited: Mathew 18:6, Deuteronomy 21:22 and 32:24, Ezekiel 5:10, Genesis 19:24, Joshua 10:36) FALSE. The following scriptures are “cherry picked” and often taken radically out of context and used as justification for abortion. All are false: “But whosoever shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.” Mathew 18:6

In this scripture Jesus is likening new believers to small children (they are innocent and uneducated like children). He warns that it would be better for someone to drown than to cause a new believer to stumble. To deceive is a sin. Sin leads to death. If we die without turning to Christ for repentance, the punishment is that we will spend eternal life in Hell. What Jesus is saying is that drowning would be better than what will follow in Hell. This scripture in no way suggests children can be drowned. “If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice

of his mother, and who, when they have chastened him, will not heed them, then

his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his city. And they shall say to the elders of his city, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.” Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall put away the evil from among you, and all Israel shall hear and fear.” Deuteronomy 21: 18-21

Again, like the woman accused of adultery, this law prevented fathers in the patriarchal society of Israel (where the father’s word was law) from taking action against rebellious children without first consulting the elders at the city gate. There, the testimony of the parents and the child would be considered by the community. Such a capital crime, at that time, would have required the testimony of two or three witnesses. This was an early form of “due process” preventing a parent from unjustly murdering their child. “They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.” Deuteronomy 32:24

This scripture is part of a song that the Lord spoke to Moses to share with the people of Israel. The song was given to Moses to teach the people of Israel to “fear” (respect) the Lord their God. The people were guilty of idolatry and breaking many of God’s covenants. After Moses spoke the words of the song to his people he commanded the people to turn their hearts back to God. It’s important to point out here that God is a just God. God is also the creator of all life. It is within God’s authority to give and take life. However, in his mercy we see over and

over in the Bible that God grants mercy to his children. Although this scripture states that God may bring lethal consequences as just punishment for sin, it does not say that men could render such punishment. So no, this scripture does not justify burning children as the claim implies. “Therefore the fathers shall eat the sons in the midst of thee, and the sons shall eat their fathers; and I will execute judgments in thee, and the whole remnant of thee will I scatter into all the winds.” Ezekial 5:10

In this scripture, the prophet Ezekiel predicts the outcome of the people of Israel turning away from God. He predicts multiple catastrophes that would affect God’s people and that only a remnant would remain. Among the catastrophes was a famine where people would starve and resort to cannibalism. When we turn away from God, we open ourselves to the enemy. In this case, in 2 Kings 6:26-31 we see that Ben-Hadad of Aram besieged Samaria and this led to famine, starvation and cannibalism. This was a consequence of the enemies of Israel besieging Samaria (acts of men). God was so concerned about things such as this happening that he sent prophets to warn the people to turn back to Him. So, no God does not condone cannibalism of children as the claim implies. If He did, he would not have warned the children of Israel.

A New Holocaust Language similar to what was used in Nazi Germany to justify the torture and murder of Jews is now strikingly similar to language we hear repeated by politicians and the media every day with regard to the topic of abortion. Recently Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia supported infanticide (where a child born alive after an attempted abortion could be killed) if

Eugenics and abortion Margaret Sanger was an American “birth control activist” who opened the first “birth control” clinic in the United States and established the organizations that became Planned Parenthood Federation. She was also a believer in Eugenics. Eugenics is a set of beliefs that practice or aim to improve the “genetic quality” of the human race by excluding certain groups of people that are judged to be “inferior” and promoting other groups that are judged to be “superior”. Protecting life in your community As we move toward the 2020 elections, the opportunity to change the direction for America to a culture of life hangs in the balance. Christians are needed within every state, every community, every church to

speak out and take action to change the hearts and minds of Americans. Public opinion polls reflect attitudes that indicate that we have fallen away from God. The enemy has taken hold. We must take back our cities, our states and our churches. We must break the strongholds that ensnare our communities, our families and our children in the culture of death.

As you listen to the videos of pro-life advocates witnessing to women and girls as they walk into abortion mills to take the lives of their children, there is a very obvious theme that emerges. That theme is “I AM NOT ENOUGH.” So many of these women say things like: “It will be better than the life I could give this child.” “I don’t want this child to grow up

Watching these videos, I want to step in and say to these young women “Who told you these lies? You don’t have to do this by yourself! You ARE enough! You can overcome. Your life will not end when this child is born. The opportunities for your life will NOT simply disappear! Don’t you see, you’ve got a God that loves you on your side!”

They are listening! What also becomes obvious is that these women and girls are repeating things that THEY HAVE BEEN TOLD by others. Although this “advice” may come from well-meaning family or friends, they are not receiving Biblically sound advice and the consequences are grave.

If we want to bring about an end to abortion, we have to not only change the hearts and minds of women, but also of the community around them. Although we can and should teach about sexual abstinence, once a woman is faced with an unplanned pregnancy, circumstances have changed. We are in a new place as a

community. We must now transition into a place of compassion and support. We need to speak powerfully into the hearts of these women in such a way that we support them in drawing closer to God, living Godly lives and raising Godly children. All is not lost!
