My home town of Hervey Bay is actually a fantastic destination for families and I’m finally going to spend a week viewing it through the eyes of a tourist. You can read about some of our experiences in this edition and much more in the December edition later on in the year. Keep an eye on the website as many stories will be added over the next three months that won’t make it into the magazine. As usual, I’d love to hear your thoughts - what you enjoyed reading and what you would like to see more and less of. O’Reilly’s Just Delivered The Best Short Getaway For Families by Jessica Palmer

20

Image: Enjoying the well known Tree Top Walk at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. Credit: Jessica Palmer.

AUSTRALIA

When it comes to a nature-filled family getaway with easy to manage social distancing, O’Reilly’s is the ultimate choice!

I

t all started with a fluff ball Alpaca named brandy. We had embarked on a short family getaway in the Gold Coast hinterlands and met Brandy at Mountview Alpaca Farm, conveniently located within the grounds of O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards. Not only can you feed and walk the alpacas around the vineyard grounds, but you can level up the experience by ordering a picnic basket from the homestead. The picnic can be enjoyed anywhere on the grounds, but spread out on a BYO blanket right next to Canungra Creek is a great spot!

I made an executive decision to spend time with the alpacas before enjoying our picnic. You are given 30 minutes with your alpaca if you book an ‘’Alpaca Experience’’ and I didn’t want to waste any of that time eating. If you know that 30 minutes is not going to be long enough for your family, make sure to book the ‘’Love Alpacas’’ experience for a full 60 minutes! When Brandy and her mum, Macca were first led out of the yard to meet us, I drew in my breath sharply, ‘’Oh my god! You are cute!’’ I said.

Top: Brandy the 6 month old alpaca at Mountview Alpaca Farm. Credit: Jessica Palmer. AboveL: A few goodies in our picnic hamper supplied by O’’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard. Credit: Jessica Palmer. AboveR: Macca the Alpaca. Credit: Jessica Palmer.

21

AUSTRALIA

My five-year-old daughter and I had poured over the alpaca photos on the Mountview Alpaca Farm webpage before we left, but neither myself nor the two kids were prepared for this level of fluffy cuteness. Named after the well-known series of children’s books, Macca the Alpaca is 3 years old and Brandy is her first cria, or baby alpaca. Brandy is six months old and utterly adorable.

22

Due to the bags of alpaca food in hand, we instantly bonded with Macca and Brandy. Strolling towards Canungra Creek, we sat on a bench seat while Macca and Brandy happily munched on grass and allowed us to sneak in some cuddles. The kids had a great conversation with the quiet alpacas, who carried on munching grass and melting our hearts with their large brown eyes and friendly nature. Sadly, the 25-minute alarm we had set went off on my son’s watch and it was time to take Macca and Brandy back. We estimated it would take fiveminutes to dawdle back. Reluctantly, we said goodbye to our new friends and headed over to the homestead to pick up our pre-ordered picnic lunch. Realising that I forgot to pack a picnic rug, we opted to sit at an empty table under a tree by the Creek. It was such a carefree experience. This place is more than just a tourist attraction. O’Reilly’s creates amazing memories for families at their Canungra Valley Vineyard with the Alpaca Picnic experience. The Mountview Alpaca Farm is also leading a new program by training some of their alpacas as therapy animals to visit hospitals and aged care facilities. They aim to establish a not for profit organisation so they can reach more people in more locations.

AUSTRALIA

“O’Reilly’s creates amazing memories for families”

Time ticked on and it was time to leave. We followed the Lamington National Park Road up the mountain to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat where we were to spend the next two nights. Set amongst the beauty of World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park, the good things just come naturally here. The O’Reilly family have been welcoming visitors since 1917 and it’s a haven for those seeking to escape crowds in a stunning, natural location. Strolling along the well known Tree Top Walk had been on my bucket list for years and I felt very blessed to be able to share this with the kids, who thankfully, were just as excited as I was. Staying in a mountain view room, we spent time in the evening before dinner relaxing in our comfortable room. Sometimes playing a game on the bed, sometimes watching a movie on the kids’ tablet, but mostly sitting on the balcony and taking in the spectacular views of the mountains as a procession of birds flittered on and off the balcony railings, including the stunning King Parrots.

GETTING TO O’REILLY’S

There is an amazing array of activities for families at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. The Birds of Prey and Wildlife Encounters shows are great for all ages. Expect to get finger-licked by a squirrel glider, cuddle a snake, and get up close and personal with majestic birds of prey such as Stella the Wedge-Tailed Eagle, Conan the Kestral and Twinkle the Owl. Families can feed the birds, embark on a Segway Safari Tour (over 12 years of age), soar on a flying fox, head out on a glow worm tour or order a picnic hamper and adventure off to one of 500 world-class waterfalls accessible via 160km of nature trails. So what are you waiting for? Set off on an amazing, nature-filled, family getaway to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat … and make sure you stop in for an alpaca picnic before you head up the mountain!

The Retreat is 90 minutes from the Gold Coast and two hours from Brisbane. Head to the town of Canungra and onto Kidston Street once in town. Kidston Street turns into Lamington National Park Road and you will follow this road all the way up the mountain to the end. O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard is also found on Lamington National Park Road, just 10 minutes after leaving Canungra.

We Officially Tested the

Best Things to do

in Ipswich!

W

e officially tested the best family-friendly things to do in Ipswich and came up with this ultimate list! Located only 45 minutes drive south-west of Brisbane CBD, Ipswich is an ideal getaway for a long weekend to escape the hustle of the larger city. Here are the best family-friendly experiences in Ipswich that both kids and parents will enjoy!

42

by Jessica Palmer

Feed Adorable Farm Animals at Ewe-Nique Hobby Farm Dave and Penny operate the family-friendly Ewe Nique Hobby Farm. Kids and adults can feed and pet adorable alpacas, lambs, sheep, goats, chicken and geese. I loved this just as much as the kids! Here what to do ‌ book in first. Numbers are limited to ensure that every family can have a great time and practise social distancing. When you arrive, order yourself a cuppa on the way in and grab a few mini-buckets of carrots and grain for the animals.

Farmer Dave will give you a quick run-down in a shaded area with tables and hay bale seats. You will then be let loose to feed and pet the animals! When looking for things to do in Ipswich with younger kids, this is a great option!

Escape the Room at Seraphim Escape rooms Escape rooms don’t have to be scary! We had a great time at the Seraphim Escape Rooms in the familyfriendly Santa themed room.

A series of clues must be solved to get yourself off Santa’s naughty list and escape the room. Of course, older kids may like to experience one of the scarier options. Don’t worry, there is a hint buzzer if you need it and it’s a great opportunity for the kids to work together. We finished with only nine minutes to spare and used the hint button a few times. Can you do better? This was one of the kids favourite things to do in Ipswich and I loved watching them work together as a team! Bookings are essential.

Assist Researchers to Track Koalas at Hidden Vale Enjoy lunch at the award-winning Homage Restaurant at Spicers Hidden Vale and head out on a Koala Safari Tour afterwards. The Koala Safari tour begins with a tour of the Hidden Vale Wildlife Centre, a partnership between the University of Queensland and The Turner Family Foundation. You will then jump into a troop carrier and head out to the first ”koala hotspot”. This is where you will help Dr Tribe and his team of researchers locate the resident koala community. This is a genuine eco-experience not to be missed! Numbers are limited and bookings are essential. If you’re looking for things to do with a hand of luxury, consider booking into Spicers Hidden Vale for the whole weekend.

Relax With a Bell Tent Picnic at The Soul Nook Collective The Soul Nook Collective creates magical picnic experiences on the old church grounds in Marburg.

44

This was one of my favourite things to do in Ipswich! Picnics are available Wednesdays to Saturdays and can be as simple as a picnic rug set up under the trees to the full Bell Tent experience. There is a package to suit every budget!

Meet Hemu the Emu at the Ipswich Nature Centre The Ipswich Nature Centre is a great option for families when looking for cheap things to do in Ipswich! Located in Queens Park, admission is free but a gold coin donation would be appreciated. Wander the nature centre’s shaded walkways yourself or book in for the VIP guided tour. This will give you the opportunity to learn more about the animals. We met Hemu the Emu on the VIP guided tour and fell in love with his quirkiness. Hemu didn’t cope well with Covid-19 restriction, falling into depression with no visitors. He is very pleased to be able to talk to people again! The Centre is open between 9:30am – 4pm Tue to Sun and daily during school holidays.

Browse Antique Stores in Marburg Marburg is home to two of the most wonderful antique stores I’ve ever visited, Scotland Yard Antiques and The Black Museum. The kids, who have only ever seen mobile phones, were fascinated with the collection of old telephones and really enjoyed (in their words), ”finding the olden day stuff.” The Special Branch Collective is right next door and all three stores are owned by members of the same family. This is where you go between browsing to grab a coffee and snack. There is a little playground nearby for the kids and less than 2 minutes walk away is the Soul Nook Collective, one of my favourite places to visit in Ipswich.

Explore the Workshop Rail Museum Even if you’re not a die-hard rail fan, parents and kids of all ages will enjoy the Workshop Rail Museum. I personally loved the historic steam engines and various displays of antique parts. The kids were enthralled by the interactive exhibits, particularly the ”How Cities Work” exhibition where they got to build things with pool noodles and connectors. There is also a science centre exhibit and a Nippers’ Railway play zone that’s designed for younger kids.

AUSTRALIA Bookings are essential and visits are timed for two hours to allow lower visitor numbers and cleaning between sessions.

EXPLORE Queens Park and Play on the Playground The large playground at Queens Park is located right near the Queens Park Cafe. Convenient, right? The cafe is chock full of both healthy options, treats and coffee. You won’t be disappointed! The playground is awesome with multi-levels of equipment that include a flying fox, large slides and various other climbing and swinging things that kids love. Nearby are the beautiful Nerima Japanese Gardens. Designed in consultation with Ipswich’s Japanese sister city, Nerima, you can stroll over an ornamental lake in this picture-perfect setting. If you’re looking for wallet-friendly things to do in Ipswich, this is a great option!

RACE Through the Orchards at Watercress Creek Olives and Limes Ok, I didn’t actually do any racing here. But the kids did and they loved it! I thoroughly enjoyed my casual stroll through the Olive Grove and Lime Orchards with the owner, Bernard Mahon, a fourth-generation farmer in the area.

AUSTRALIA

Bernard and his wife, Lorraine have operated Watercress Creek Olive and Limes since 1998 and are happy to let you taste test their products and show you around the property. Parents can enjoy a relaxing visit and stroll and kids can enjoy a game of chasey among the Tahitian Lime Orchard. This is a great sunny weather activitiy!

Set Up Camp or Rent-A-Tent at Ivory’s Rock Ivory’s Rock Caravan and Camping ground is one of the most spacious we have ever visited. Combine this with the option of a private bathroom in the toilet block, and social distancing has become easy! If you don’t have the gear, or just can’t be bothered, Ivory’s Rock do a hassle-free Rent-A-Tent experience where you arrive to a fully set up tent complete with gazebo, tables and chairs. There is even WiFi! Ivory’s Rock is a great weekend escape with family and friends involving freedom, fresh air, campfires, the outdoors, and the nightime sky. The kids loved the cute wallabies around the campsite and the novelty of the rent-a-tent. Combining this with a visit to nearby Summerland Camels makes for a great weekend escape.

visit Summerland Camels and try out the camel milk skin products Book into the Camel Farm Experience Tour at Summerland Camel Farm and learn all about their ”smart tech farming” operations and why camel milk

46

is the ultimate ingredient for skin care. Both the kids and myself loved feeding the camels before the tour and spotting the baby camels throughout the tour. At the end, you will have the opportunity to try delicious smelling skin products made from camel’s milk, fetta cheese and the camel milk itself. You can also book in for a camel ride and visit the onsite cafe and retail store to try out their cheese, gelato, chocolate and famous “camelccino” … all made from camel milk!

Take a Llama for a Walk at The Llama Farm The Llama Farm is 80 acres of glorious rural land containing Queensland’s largest herd of Llamas. Visiting the farm is an experience like no other. Not only are there friendly Llamas, there are also adorable donkeys, miniature ponies, stunning peacocks, lively maremmas and a giant Flemish rabbit. Shane from The Llama farm offers two different experiences to guests in either a farm visit or a guided llama walk, in which you can choose your own llama to walk on a lead along a purpose-built trail on the farm. The Llama Farm doesn’t have set opening hours so both experiences are by appointment only. If looking for a new experience or things to do in Ipswich, walking a llama at The Llama Farm is a great choice! The writer visited Ipswich in partnership with Discover Ipswich.

Finding Nemo and Spotting Turtles

This Is Green Island by Jessica Palmer

AUSTRALIA

If you only have time for one island when exploring Tropical North Queensland from Cairns, heading to Green Island with Great Adventures is a top choice!

I

said to my son, ‘’Look, there’s another turtle!’’ He had only just announced on the short boat trip over that turtles were his favourite “under-water“ animal. Whipping around to look where I was pointing, he asked excitedly if we could follow it. We were standing in the water’s edge at Green Island, just 45 minutes from Cairns and it was the fourth turtle we had spotted that morning. Turtle number four was chilling about in the shallow waters just a few metres from the shore line. The first two were on a glass bottom boat coral viewing tour which we jumped on board as soon as we arrived and the third was as we were snorkelling over the sea-grass in the shallows just 20 minutes earlier.

Before I could answer, the turtle picked up speed and headed back towards the deeper ocean. ‘’Never mind, he’s gone now,’’ I said. ‘’I’m hungry now anyway.’’ Realising that nobody has actually grabbed the bag that contained our sandwiches for the day when we left, we went in search of a cafe. I suspect that Green Island’s convenience is one of the reasons the island is said to be the most popular. We headed to the day visitor area and found a cafe within minutes, ordering four burgers with a side of chips, which we ate picnic style spread out on an oversized towel on the beach. I didn’t regret forgetting our lunch one bit, this was way better than vegemite sandwiches, as was the ice-cream we treated ourselves too afterwards.

AUSTRALIA

Why Green Island? At 6000 years old, Green Island is only around 29 acres in size and offers a unique reef and rainforest experience, being the only coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef with a rainforest. It’s surrounded by marine life and coral gardens and offers a range of snorkelling opportunities. The shallows are an ideal introduction to snorkelling and there’s a good chance of finding Nemo … who we all forgot about when we realised spotting turtles was on the cards! There is a resort, restaurant, facilities with showers and everything families need for a comfortable visit.

52

Why Great Adventures? By Amanda DiSilvestro We headed over with Great Adventures and I wouldn’t do it any other way. The experience was seamless and professionals from beginning to end. Great Adventures’ Green Island Discovery package is perfect for families and includes: • Fast return catamaran cruise to Green Island • Use of snorkelling equipment • Glass-bottom boat coral viewing tour • Exclusive use of the island swimming pool • Exclusive eco-island walk • Use of day visitor facilities • Beach bag.

AUSTRALIA

We took full advantage of the snorkelling equipment and I was pleasantly surprised to find that sizes were available for both my five and seven-year-old, who were very excited about getting kitted out with fins, masks and a snorkel. Although they can both swim, we also grabbed a life vest for them so they could just concentrate on learning to snorkel properly.

Fun Things to do on Green Island Find Nemo on a Glass Bottom Boat Coral Viewing Tour *Part of the Green Island Discovery Package

The Glass bottom boat tours go for around 30 minutes and leave from the ‘bend’ in the jetty. Make sure you book your departure time when you arrive on the island. Expect to see an amazing array of marine life and coral including Nemo and some of his well-known friends!

Stroll the Exclusive Great Adventures Eco Island Walk *Part of the Green Island Discovery Package

Green Island is the only coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef with rainforest and there is a beautiful Eco-Island Walk exclusive to great adventures that allows families to enjoy it. Featuring informative signs and a well maintained walking track, families can stroll back along the beach on the sand.

Teach the Kids to Snorkel in the Shallow Waters *Snorkel hire is included in the Discovery Package

The dive shop has everything you need for a no-fuss snorkelling adventure. If younger kids are a little afraid of swimming over coral (like one of mine is), they will still be able to spot fish and possibly even turtles in the sea grass patches close to shore near the lifeguard area.

FRENCH POLYNESIA

by Jessica Palmer

Paradise exists ‌ and its found in the Pacific Ocean, roughly halfway between the east coast of Australia and California. French Polynesia is well suited to families. The climate is great, finding food that kids will actually eat is no problem and the sparkling lagoons are a play-ground for all ages. The hardest part is choosing which island to relax on

56

... Here are five of the best!

Image: Overwater bungalows in Bora Bora. Credit: ŠTahiti Tourisme.

FRENCH POLYNESIA

T

ahiti is the island your international flight will land in and home to iconic surf breaks, black sand beaches, and waterfalls. It’s probably not the island whose photographs inspired you to visit French Polynesia, and as a result, many people head straight to the outer islands missing out on all the wonderful things about Tahiti.

TAHITI HIGHLIGHTS Teahupoo

Teahupoo is home to the Tahiti Billabong Pro, an iconic surf competition held every may that attracts the best of the best from surfers all over the world. Non-surfers can appreciate the beauty of this unique beach and besides, it’s fun watching the surfers in action.

Pape’ete

The capital city is not huge as far as cities go but Pape’ete is a great place to get supplies and stroll the waterfront. Our favourite place? The markets!

Waterfalls

Jump on a tour or hire a car and find them yourself! Faarumai Waterfalls are a popular choice for tourists as they’re easy to find and beautifully dramatic.

Arahoho Blowhole

When the swell is big enough, huge sprays of water shoot out from the blowhole with a big ‘’wooosh’’ sound.

Why We Love Tahiti Tahiti is divided into two “circles” connected by an isthmus. The larger being Tahiti Nui (Big Tahiti) and the smaller being Tahiti Iti (Little Tahiti). We love Tahiti for its Polynesian vibe, black sand beaches with mountainous backdrops and the amazing laid back village feel once you leave the capital of Pape’ete.

57

FRENCH POLYNESIA

M

o’orea is picture perfect and you would be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t rub their eyes in disbelief when first laying eyes on its mountainous peaks and sparkling lagoon.

Why We Love Mo’orea We love Mo’orea because it’s incredibly beautiful and unlike the other islands, families can travel there in 45 minutes by a large ferry from Tahiti, a significant cost saving when compared to air-travel between islands.

MO’OREA HIGHLIGHTS The Lagoon

Mo’orea’s lagoon is stunning and a lagoon tour is a great way to experience it. Excursions usually involve a stop at two bays, shark feeding and a picnic and snorkel on a beautiful motu.

Hauru Point

Hauru Point has one of the best beaches on the island with an offshore Motu that you can reach by swimming or kayak.

Opunohu Valley

Opunohu Valley has some of the most important Marae (sacred historical sites) in French Polynesia. The oldest surviving structures date back to the 13th century!

4WD Tour

A 4wd tour of the island is fun! Families can expect to visit Afareaitu Waterfalls, vanilla and pineapple plantations, archaeological sites and the fruit-juice factory.

Lagoonarium Village

A short boat ride carries you to a tiny Motu with a stunning reef. There are a wide variety of fish with two daily feeding sessions that attract even more. Families can relax on the Motu when they need a break from swimming and snorkelling.

FRENCH POLYNESIA

R

aíatea is home to the second largest town in French Polynesia (after Pape’ete in Tahiti) and shares its lagoon with a smaller island, Taha’a. Neither island gets many tourists, making Ra’iatea ideal for families wishing to truly get away and explore French Polynesia.

Why We Love Ra’iatea We love Ra’iatea for its lush green interior, affordable guesthouses and beautiful Motus (tiny islands). Ra’iatea doesn’t really have beaches but the Motu’s within the lagoon make up for it!

RA’IATEA HIGHLIGHTS The Motus

Visiting Moto Ofetaru is an amazing day trip involving turquoise water, white sand & coconut trees. The water is shallow enough for younger kids to enjoy and there is great snorkelling. You will need to pack your own lunch and hang it in a tree away from the motu’s many cats and chickens.

The Circle Island Road

Hiring a car to drive the 98km sealed circle island road is a wonderful day out. With mountains on one side and lagoon on the other, you’ll start seriously considering how to pack up your life and start a new one here.

The Lagoon

Snorkelling and diving in Ra’iatea is amazing and the island has become the yacht-charter centre of French Polynesia. Bare-boat charters are available as well as fully skippered luxury offerings.

Island Tours

Jumping in on an island tour is a great way to pack it all in one day. The tours often focus on the island of Taha’a but generally include snorkelling in a coral garden, a visit to a pearl and vanilla farm and lunch on a beautiful Motu.

FRENCH POLYNESIA

uahine is noticeably less resort dominated than Bora-Bora and actually consists of two islands, Huahine Nui (Big Huahine) and Huahine iti (Little Huahine). Huahine Nui is more developed and Huahine Iti has the best beaches and lagoons.

HUAHINE HIGHLIGHTS Fish Traps

The V-shaped fish traps have been here for centuries and are just fascinating. The tips of the V shapes point towards the ocean and as the fish are pulled towards the sea by the tide, they become trapped at the point of the V where they are then harpooned or netted.

Why We Love Huahine We love Huahine because it’s delightfully sleepy and has epic sunsets. It’s a beautiful drive to hire a car and circle both of the islands via the sealed road.

Archaelogical Museum

Huahine has a small archaeological museum set in an open traditional house. Housed inside are interesting traditional tools and many other bits and pieces of history. Around the site are Marae, some dating back to the 16th century.

Blue Eyed Eels

The Blue Eyed Eels live near the village of Faie and are considered sacred. When the sunlight hits them, you will notice their amazing porcelain blue eyes that almost appear to glow.

Lagoon Tour

Head out with an organised lagoon tour or hire your own outboard. There are beautiful coral gardens, untouched Motus and some of the best and most consistent surf breaks in French Polynesia. Although we didn’t scuba-dive here, I’m told it’s magnificent!

Relaxing

Huahine is really just about bouts of relaxing in between enjoying the lagoon. It has a village feel and is just perfect for families who love the ocean, outdoors and quiet but don’t need to be in a city to have a good time.

ora Bora is it! It’s the island featured on social media and in your travel agents brochures. Whether you’re staying in an ultra-luxurious over-water bungalow or a value-for-money pension (guest house), you’ll realise very quickly what all the hype is about when the island comes into view from the airplane.

BORA BORA HIGHLIGHTS The Lagoon

What can I say ... it’s stunning at every angle and whether you want to snorkel, sail, dive or just swim in the shallows, you will fall in love with Bora-Bora’s lagoon.

Island Night

Experiencing an island night at one of the large brand-name resorts is a must on Bora Bora. Expect a great meal and lots of hip shaking, coconutbra wearing, drumming and ukulele fun. It’s very professional and utterly entertaining for all ages.

Snorkelling

Bora Bora’s water is great for families! The water is clear with spatterings of coral and fish at every turn.

The Island

A 4WD tour of the mountainous island is a great way to take in all the American WWII historical sites and local archaeological stops. Alternatively, it’s just as fun to hire a pushbike and casually pedal your way along the coastal road.

Why We Love Bora Bora We love Bora Bora because it lives up to the hype. Bora Bora is spectacular, small, mountainous and engulfed in a stunning turquoise lagoon that has to be seen to be believed.
