rom our earliest recorded history — through the imagery of cave paintings, stone tablets and scrolls — we learn that the willpower of mankind — the ability to adapt, overcome and strive toward the next dawn of day — propels us forward. Our failures incite us to push harder, and our hopes fuel our drive toward success. When down, we reconsider and recalculate then position ourselves to look forward and move ahead. We rest only to rise, to gather strength.

“Once you get momentum, embrace it; feed it, and cherish it,” said Bastian. Often, it is the “why,” or the motivation, behind what we do that affects true success. We need to believe that what we want to do is what needs to be done, that it will positively benefit everyone. When effective change is just over the horizon, it’s up to us, as individuals, to pursue it. Our diligence will be rewarded with each goal we accomplish. Have confidence in yourself; continue to push and believe.

As the new year settles in and we find ourselves scribbling out or backspacing over a few sixteens here and there, we realize that some corrections in our lives may be easier to make than others. Incrementally, we adjust our timetables, spreadsheets, budgets and lifestyle to make time and to make the necessary changes. We aren’t challenged to be brought down; our challenges are meant to make us realize how strong and wise we are, and that we have the ability to succeed. Let’s not be discouraged; let’s be empowered.

At the December North Fulton Chamber of Commerce breakfast, I had the opportunity to listen to a fireside chat between Senator Brandon Beach and Ed Bastian, the CEO of Delta Airlines. Bastian spoke of how Delta stepped back and took a discerning look at what they were doing wrong as a company. Every airline flies airplanes, so they had to determine how they wanted to distinguish themselves. The conclusion was that they needed to focus on the cultural needs of customers and their employees rather than the basic, day-to-day operations of the business. The company decided to get more involved with its communities and its people. Once the ball got rolling, Delta worked together to keep it rolling, and everyone benefitted. The company wanted to be there “to serve, not apologize.” This new focus resulted in Delta Airlines becoming the only airline in history to rise out of bankruptcy on its own. It has

the least number of cancelled flights of any major airline and is sharing its good fortune through profit sharing and giving back to local charities and organizations.

EDITORIAL Julie Senger Julie@FamilyLifePublications.com

You are Valuable to God

By Kevin Head, Ph.D.

The new year is often a time to reflect on life. In Psalm 8, David was reflecting and realized that he felt very small — insignificant — unimportant. He looked at the sky and wondered, how much are human beings worth to God? How important am I? Can you picture David out on a hillside at night watching the sheep? He’s leaning back, gazing at the huge sky above him, looking at thousands of stars. And David thinks, I am just a tiny speck in this huge world. How can any one person be important to God?

by God, is simply mind-boggling. It’s easy to feel small and insignificant. But then, God gives David an incredible truth in this Psalm. As David ponders the value of his life, God says:

This new year, God wants you to know there is nothing in the entire world more important to Him than you! Your life is precious and sacred to the Creator of this world. Your life is of the utmost value to God.

Yes, David — this creation is huge. But I made you just a little lower than the heavenly beings. I’ve put everything under your feet. All the flocks and herds — all the beasts of the field and birds of the air — all the fish of the sea — everything! You are more important to me than all of these things.

Whatever you are experiencing today — God loves you and cares for you as if you were the only person alive in all of creation. For as Jesus said, “God cares for the lilies of the field. If God cares for the lilies that are here today and gone tomorrow, how much more

Many of us have these same feelings. When we look at the sky today, we know, in our galaxy alone, there are billions of stars. This universe, created

Wow! What a promise! What a statement of our place in this world. What an incredible assurance of how important we are to God.

will God care for and love you?”

Have you ever wondered how you could improve your smile, so you ask Dr. Google what you can do about it? You discover there are a plethora of options to change the shape and color of your teeth. There are three main options to alter your natural teeth to be more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

What’s the Difference?

The most conservative option is bonding. Bonding is the use of a composite material added to the tooth to repair chips, close dark triangles at the gum, change the shape of the anterior teeth through a composite veneer, fill areas where white spots are removed, etc. It’s a versatile and relatively inexpensive way to improve your smile. The down side to bonding is mainly its strength; it’s more likely to chip and wear down over the years. The next option is a porcelain veneer,

Finally, a crown is used if the tooth has already had several fillings in it, there is significant tooth structure missing, a tooth has been root-canal treated and is cracking, or possibly, if the tooth is severely rotated, and the desired aesthetic effect of a porcelain veneer cannot be achieved. A crown provides additional strength to a weaker tooth that otherwise can’t survive with any other restoration.

By Amanda Kossick, D.M.D.

which is what most people believe is the main option for rebuilding a smile. In most cases, this restoration requires your dentist to prepare your teeth, which means they must cut tooth structure away to make room for the porcelain. Often, dentists are able to more precisely design the shape of the tooth with the lab, and it produces a more durable, longer-lasting restoration. The drawbacks are the cost to the patient and tooth structure removal process.

Discuss these options with your dentist to determine which one is best for you!

New Year New Hobby:

sustenance in shrubs and trees as well as on the ground. If you want to maximize your bird-watching experience, it’s important to provide different types of food and to use an assortment of feeders.

Feeding the Birds

By Lisa Ethridge A song in the children’s movie, Mary Poppins, features a woman selling birdseed crooning, “Come feed the little birds; show them you care.” It turns out, she’s right. Feeding the birds during the winter is a popular pastime that increases the survival rate our feathery friends. Georgia’s winter appeals to a lovely assortment of seed-eating, fruit-eating and insect-eating birds who look for

When it comes to bird feeding supplies, a visit to a specialty bird store can provide valuable information, guarantee fresh seed and showcase quality accessories. Purchase tablelike feeders for ground-feeding birds such as sparrows and towhees. Hopper and tube feeders are best for shrub and treetop species such as finches and cardinals. Suet feeders—for cool to cold weather only—will attract woodpeckers, nuthatches and chickadees. Be sure to buy sturdy, good-quality feeders that are easy to clean. Make sure to place feeders out of predators’ (e.g. cats) reach. Different types of food will attract a diverse mix of birds. Black oil sunflower appeals to the greatest number of birds. Feeding nyjer/thistle seed is a tasty treat

for finches, but be sure it’s fresh; the birds will not eat stale seed. Waxwings, bluebirds, mockingbirds and other fruit/ berry eaters enjoy raisins and currants soaked in water overnight and placed on a table feeder. Fill one feeder with peanuts and other nuts to attract nuthatches, titmice and woodpeckers. When purchasing blends, avoid those with milo, wheat and oats because they don’t appeal to most birds. Store the seed in an airtight container to keep it fresh. Bird feeding and watching can be inspirational and educational. For further reading, Bringing Nature Home, by Doug Tallamy, is a highly regarded book that will enlighten you about biodiversity and the importance of native gardening.

Senator Speaks

H

appy New Year! Thank you for the great honor and privilege to serve you in elected office. I was humbled and overwhelmed to achieve another landslide re-election victory in November. We return to the Senate on January 9th and will be sworn in for the next legislative biennial at the Georgia Capitol. This has been an incredible experience and opportunity. I have met and been able to serve thousands of people in a variety of ways during my tenure. While some days are very challenging, my focus and drive to make a meaningful difference for families endlessly motivates me. I would like to say a special “thank you” to my wife, Kari, sons, Will and Ryan, and extended family for their unending support. My family as well as the countless supporters and volunteers make the difference in every election. I will continue with the same single promise from several years ago—no one

will work harder and/or with more of a sense of urgency to serve you. I have a bold vision for Georgia and America, built upon the foundation of freedom and opportunity. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are more than words, and it is my job to create, preserve and protect an environment for success. I believe in fiscal responsibility and lower taxes. I believe government is best when it’s smaller and closer to the people. I believe in one nation under God. I believe in workfare over welfare, celebrating success while working harder and complaining less. I believe in faith, family, personal accountability and character. My plan begins with children and education. We need a dynamic workforce to meet the needs of a global economy supported by innovative schools and career paths. I will continue my focus to eliminate burdensome regulations and reduce taxes on families and businesses in order to encourage job growth. My greatest objective is to solve problems for those I serve.

It has been a long national election cycle filled with emotion and passion. The people have spoken, and I want to thank everyone who put themselves forward as a candidate. Congratulations to President Trump, U.S. Senator Isakson and all others throughout our state and nation on decisive victories. It’s time for everyone to take a deep breath, and focus on the future. After all, we are all Americans, and our greatest days are still ahead. We expressed one of our greatest freedoms when we voted, and election day is now in the rear-view mirror for 2016. It’s time to focus ahead, and serve the people as our founding fathers had intended. God bless America! L Sen. John Albers serves as Chairman of the State and Local Government Operations Committee. He represents the 56th Senate District, which includes portions of North Fulton and Cherokee counties. 404.463.8055. John.Albers@Senate.Ga.Gov.

Book Review By annell gerson

Fans of domestic thrillers like Girl on the Train, The Silent Wife and Gone Girl will find Kimberly Belle’s newest book, The Marriage Lie, enthralling from the very first page. As far as Iris Griffith is concerned, she and her husband, Will, have a perfect life. Iris is a counselor at a private school in an Atlanta suburb, and Will is an on-the-rise senior software engineer for a consulting company. They spend their down time putting sweat equity in their home, located in an older Atlanta neighborhood, undergoing trendy refurbishment. After seven years of marriage, they remain “eyes glazed over” in love with each other and have recently decided to have children. But on the morning Will flies to Orlando to give the keynote speech at a cyber security summit, bliss becomes heartache, confusion and a mired quest for truth. Instead of flying to Orlando, Iris learns he flew to Seattle, and the plane he was on crashed, killing everyone on board. Though Iris initially believes the airline has contacted her in error, (after all, she has a copy of the flyer announcing Will’s presentation in Orlando) when he doesn’t return her calls, doesn’t come home, and ultimately, when the airline returns his wedding ring, she knows he is truly dead. Iris is overcome by grief, but she can’t stop thinking, why? Why would Will lie to her about the trip? And if the trip was a lie, were there other secrets he kept from her? Her quest to uncover the truth leads her to the discovery of a man she has never known. Full of believable, gritty, pulse-raising twists and turns, readers follow Iris on her cross-country journey in search of truth...and in so doing, may find themselves questioning how well they know their own spouse. Kimberly Belle lives in the suburbs of Atlanta. Bookmiser will host Kimberly on Sunday, January 22, 2017, from 2-3:30 pm, for an author tea and discussion of The Marriage Lie. This is a free event. Please RSVP to 770-993-1555. L

Johns Creek Becomes First Municipality in the World to Share Business Data with Waze Finding a business – and driving to it – in Johns Creek is now easier when using Waze due to a groundbreaking expansion of the City’s Waze partnership. As the first municipal partner in Georgia, Johns Creek has been sharing real-time road closure and construction information with Waze since Aug. 2015 to help drivers improve their commute and “outsmart traffic.” This partnership expansion involves sharing business locations derived from Johns Creek license applications and renewals in a map-friendly format that Waze can easily consume. “If you search for a place to eat or shop in an app on your phone, you’re most likely searching by the name of the business and not a specific address,” says Nick O’Day, Johns Creek’s senior GIS manager and architect of the City’s Open Data Portal. “By sharing business information to Waze with the business name tied to a latitude and longitude, it makes the experience faster and easier.” Waze pulls information from the City’s Open Data Portal automatically, and as a result, the process doesn’t cost the City anything. Waze, the world’s largest, crowd-sourced, traffic navigation app, likes getting data from partner cities because it can immediately use it. Prior to the initial import of data from the City, the app recorded around 500 unique businesses in Johns Creek that were manually added over time by Waze users. The first import brought in the remaining 1,000+ Johns Creek businesses in one massive update. As new businesses move into Johns Creek, these locations will be added to the City’s Open Data Portal and then will be pulled into Waze according to their update schedule.

Fulton’s 2016 College and Career Ready Performance Index

Strike Up the Band! The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) released 2016 results for the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI). The CCRPI is Georgia’s statewide accountability system that replaced the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) measurement after the U.S. Department of Education granted Georgia’s waiver from NCLB in 2012. CCRPI measures schools and school districts on a 100-point scale, helping parents and the public to better understand how schools are performing in a more comprehensive manner than the pass/fail system previously in place under AYP.

Sixth graders at Crabapple Middle School held their first concert of the school year under the direction of Gus Melton.

For 2016, Fulton County’s overall score of 74.7 is higher than the state score of 73.6, with most schools scoring above the state average. Fulton’s high school average saw an increase of 7.4 points – 3.4 points higher than the state score – from the previous year. Although Fulton’s elementary average dropped slightly from the previous year, the elementary average is 0.5 points higher than the state score. The Fulton middle school score fell 1.3 points below the state average. Two schools scored over 100 points due to extra points given for “exceeding the bar” – Lake Windward Elementary and Northview High School – with scores of 100.4 and 101.2, respectively. Nearly half (44) of Fulton’s schools have scores of 80 and above: 25 elementary schools, 10 middle schools and nine high schools. Seven schools also had double-digit gains from the previous year – Riverwood International Charter School (+23.4), Milton High School (+22.5), Cambridge High School (+17.5), Northwestern Middle School (+14.3), Seaborn Lee Elementary School (+14.1), Chattahoochee High School (+12.7) and Liberty Point Elementary School (+10.7).

Handmade Cards for Kids Recently, every student at Alpharetta High School made an uplifting, handmade card in their Anchor Time class for a hospitalized child. The student council collected and shipped the cards in a large package to an organization called “Cards for Hospitalized Kids,” which sends the cards to hospitals all around the country. The purpose of this project was to make a tangible difference in the day, and hopefully even in the life, of children with terminal illnesses in hospitals all around the country.

Through CCRPI’s measurement, a school and district’s overall score is made up of three major areas: achievement (50 points possible), progress (40 points possible) and achievement gap (10 points possible). In Fulton County, the 2016 CCRPI scores averaged as 74.7 for the entire district, 73.3 for elementary schools, 70.8 for middle schools and 79.5 for high schools. By comparison, the state averages were 72.8 for elementary schools, 72.1 for middle schools and 76.1 for high schools.

A

s we prepare for 2017 and all the promise a new year holds, let’s review the highlights of 2016. 2016 began with the approval of Johns Creek’s first Strategic Economic Development Plan (SEDP) ( JohnsCreekGa.gov/business/ economicdevelopmentplan), which will serve as a blueprint for retaining and expanding local businesses. We then followed the adoption of the SEDP with approval of the 10-year Strategic Recreation and Parks Master Plan ( JohnsCreekGa.gov/RecreationParks-Strategic-Plan), which provides direction and options for planning, development and refinement of Johns Creek’s recreation and parks system through the next decade. Johns Creek more than doubled its greenspace in 2016, to more than 300 acres with the purchases of the Cauley Creek riverfront property and a linear park in Technology Park. Our outside consultants held public meetings to include public feedback in designing both properties and our three new pocket parks—State Bridge Road, Bell-Boles Road and Morton ( JohnsCreekGa.gov/ RecreationandParks/Parks-DesignProject). Citizens overwhelmingly approved a parks bond for up to $40 million that

will allow Johns Creek to move forward with these and other identified park improvements at an accelerated pace. Once complete, Johns Creek will have five new parks and four refurbished parks (Shakerag, Newtown, Ocee and Autrey Mill Nature Preserve). Following the passage of the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST), Johns Creek has the opportunity to collect up to approximately $82 million in TSPLOST funds over a five-year period, which will enable us to more aggressively address our growing traffic congestion challenge. The City Council has already approved a TSPLOST project list ( JohnsCreekGa. gov/Residents/Public-Works/FutureImprovements/TSPLOST-(1)/ TSPLOST) to improve every major traffic artery, and we are anxious to get started. Johns Creek completed its second year of the neighborhood-repaving program this past November. Repaving crews resurfaced 34.1 miles of streets in 26 subdivisions. The City increased funding for the repaving program from $1.5 million to $5 million in fiscal year 2016 in an effort to accelerate the repaving program timeline from 2019 to 2018. The City Council next focused on the development and approval of Johns Creek’s new mission, vision and six key focus areas/goals to better meet

and address the needs of residents and businesses ( JohnsCreekGa.gov/ NewsAndEvents/News-Archive/2016News/Johns-Creek-Mayor-BodkerOutlines-New-Mission,-Vis). 2016 was a historic year for Johns Creek. We were named the safest and hardest working city in Georgia and recognized as one of the top cities to live in the U.S. We’ve truly accomplished a lot in a relatively short period of time ( JohnsCreekGa.gov/live-work-play.aspx). Our dedicated first responders put their lives at risk to keep us safe, our staff consistently goes above and beyond to maintain our high quality of life, and our City Council works diligently to keep us moving forward. However, it all comes down to the quality of the people who comprise a community that ultimately determines its character, and Johns Creek is truly blessed with the best. Our diverse population is but one of our strengths. So together, let’s work to make the next ten years even more exceptional than the last.

Being Unsafe

Can Cost You! By Rick Cheney One of the most important aspects of the construction industry is jobsite safety. Each year, OSHA collects fines in excess of millions of dollars. It’s hard to imagine that something as small as not wearing your safety glasses or not having your hard hat on could cost you over $12,000 in fines, or even more devastating, it could cause an employee to be seriously injured or killed. Whether your company has employees or you use subcontractors, as the company owner, you can be held financially and legally responsible for a worker’s actions.

24

North Fulton Family Life | january 2017

It’s very important for companies to have a safety program. A safety program may consist of written training, physical training, ongoing training, jobsite evaluations and an accountability system. Implementing a safety program allows you to protect your assets and the lives of your employees. Many practices that were acceptable in the last several years are now in direct violation of current OSHA codes. Things like stairs not having hand rails, no guard rails to prevent a person from falling from the top floor to the bottom floor, not having the ground prong on an extension cord, having a splice on your extension cord, not having access to a fire extinguisher at the jobsite, not having access to a first-

aid kit at the jobsite, using a damaged ladder, using a ladder improperly and so many other things can cause a company to incur a $12,000 fine, by violating just one code. Many home builders are requiring their subcontractors to take the necessary measures to get themselves up to speed on new and existing regulations. Fortunately, there are companies that specialize in safety-training plans and can help you avoid costly fines as well as injuries. They offer seminars or indepth training classes that go over the codes that apply to your specific scope of work. In a single afternoon, you can learn enough to be on your way to a safer jobsite.

Cataract CataractSurgery Surgery?

A cataract is the clouding that occurs in your eyes as you age. Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the U.S., affecting everyday activities like reading, watching TV or driving at night. Sometimes, symptoms of a cataract may be improved with new glasses or brighter lighting. But most people with cataracts will need cataract surgery. The good news is that cataract surgery today is faster, more effective and safer than ever before. Common symptoms of cataracts include cloudy, blurry or faded vision, glare or frequent eyeglass prescription changes. Some people also experience double vision or multiple images in one eye. People in their forties and fifties may have cataracts, but it is usually around age sixty or older that they might begin to affect a person’s vision.

While cataract surgery can be performed manually by the surgeon, femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery offers a higher level of precision. The laser creates a perfect circular incision into the lens, and the lens is fragmented into smaller pieces. Any astigmatism is treated with corneal incisions. Once the cataract is prepared, the second part of the procedure involves removing the lens fragments and inserting a lens. The inserted lens can correct higher levels of astigmatism and be targeted for near vision or distance vision. Some people select monovision, which is one eye targeted for near vision and the other eye targeted for distance vision. A lens that provides both distance and near vision in the same eye is also available. The traditional cataract surgery and femtosecond laser surgery methods have

similar outcomes for patients with no astigmatism. The safety of the procedure and recovery with the femtosecond laser versus traditional technique is the same. Nearly all patients are candidates for both techniques. It boils down to how much astigmatism the patient has and whether they want to be less dependent on glasses after surgery. For those with astigmatism who want to be less dependent on glasses after surgery, the femtosecond laser option is a better choice. Before agreeing to laser surgery, schedule a consultation with your surgeon to ask questions, and make sure you are comfortable with the doctor and facility.

New Year’s Resolution Pull Out that Old Will By Marianna I. Chaet, Esq.

If your Wills were drafted before 2012, you should resolve to pull them out, and review your old estate planning documents. It is wise to revisit your documents about every four years. For one thing, read the documents to see if the plan that you previously created still fits your needs. Maybe your children have grown up to be responsible adults who no longer need Trusts for their inheritance. Maybe a new child has been born, and you’d like to add him/her to your documents. You should also check that the people you named for the various fiduciary roles in your documents are still the best fit for the job. Relationships are

constantly changing. You might now want to replace a family member with a responsible child to serve as your executor or replace an elderly guardian with someone who may now be more qualified. Tax rules are also constantly changing. Following the new presidential election, there is a great deal of uncertainty about estate taxes. Even if estate taxes remain, the lifetime exemption amount is so high that estate taxes are not a worry for many people. Old, complicated Trusts that created Credit Shelter Trusts for spouses can now be replaced with simple “all to spouse” Wills.

have also changed. In 2007, the old Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare and the Living Will were combined into one document called the Georgia Advance Directive for Healthcare. Financial Powers of Attorney also need to be periodically replaced, as some banks consider Powers that are several years old to be “stale.” This January, get cozy in front of the fireplace with your favorite blanket and your old estate planning documents, and see if they still work for you. If you don’t have any estate planning documents, then consider contacting an estate planning attorney to prevent the state default rules from determining where your assets will be distributed.

Painting is one of the many art forms that can capture the beauty of the surrounding world, but it takes a truly talented painter to see the moments worth bringing to life. Georgia painter Deborah Tidwell is an expert at spotting and capturing perfect images with oil paints, a brush and a canvas.“My inspiration comes from the life around me,” she says. Deborah Tidwell’s passion for art has always been a part of her life. She had a desire to create from a very early age. “Perhaps it’s a part of my genes! My passion for art has just always been in me,” she says. Although Deborah dabbled in art her whole life, it wasn’t until recently that she was truly able to explore her talents.“I had a degree in marketing from Georgia State University, but in 2003, I decided to quit my marketing job to go into real estate. Within the next four weeks, I found out I was pregnant. This was my opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom and devote my spare time to art,” she says. In the months after she left her job, Deborah busied herself by taking painting and advanced art classes at the University of South Carolina- Aiken

until her son was born.To this day, she still does what she loves.“My sunroom is my studio. It provides fabulous lighting with its two sky lights,” she says. She often spends four days a week, six hours each day, devoted to her artwork, and depending on the size and complexity of her paintings, it can take six to eight weeks to create a 36” x 48” painting.“I like to create a larger piece about every two or three months. It just depends on my upcoming shows, commissions and motivation,” she says.

Her keen eye for the prefect image has won her several awards over the years, including some national recognition. “Being able to enter shows, win awards and sell some of my paintings has been a big accomplishment. I’m always humbled when I receive recognition for my paintings,” she says. Abiding Calm has received numerous awards and stands as Deborah Tidwell’s favorite painting yet, only rivaled by Barefoot and Pregnant, which has also gotten favorable acknowledgement in the art community.

Working from photographs, Deborah will look through hundreds of photos until she finds one that jumps out at her.“The most important part of my process is choosing the image. For example, I was recently at a wedding, and the flower girl stopped to pick up some of the petals. The lighting and image was perfect. I snapped a few pictures of her, and I will eventually make those photographs into a painting,” she says.

“I strongly encourage others to try their hand at art. Creating art is about your enjoyment. If it becomes more, wonderful; if it doesn’t, you still get the pleasure of unleashing your creative side, which is just as rewarding,” Deborah says.

Regulate the Moisture Level in Your Home This Winter The Honeywell Electrode Humidifier creates a comfortable climate for your friends and family by monitoring the moisture in your home. It uses a HumidPRO digital thermostat to make automatic adjustments to the humidity in the air based on weather changes and the conditions inside your home.

By Robbie Matiak Would you like to protect your family from the unpleasant effects of cold air this winter season? When the outside temperature drops, we have all fallen victim to dry skin, an itchy throat and chapped lips. Honeywell just released a new humidification system that can alleviate these annoying symptoms of cold weather, while also creating a cleaner, more safe indoor environment for your family.

28

The Honeywell Electrode Humidifier is different from most humidifiers because it delivers steam humidification directly into your ductwork. Other humidifiers use saturated pads to deliver the moisture to your home. These pads can be problematic because they cultivate the perfect environment for bacteria to grow. An increase of bacteria in your system can reduce the quality of air in your home and create unsafe conditions for your family. The Honeywell Electrode Humidifier eliminates the opportunity for bacteria by infusing the moisture directly into your home’s central heating and cooling system. The Honeywell Electrode Humidifier is also connected directly to your water supply. This

allows it to automatically refill itself, so you do not have to worry about refilling the tank. The water tank also requires minimal maintenance. Simply wash it out with soap and water once a year, and the rest of the year it cleans itself automatically. As we continue to lead fuller and more enriched lives, sacrificing our family’s comfort doesn’t have to be an option. Honeywell’s Electrode Humidifier allows you to manage your home’s comfort while you go about your active, busy life this winter season. Sources: ForwardThinking. Early Orthodontic Treatment By Vishant Nath, D.M.D. Most parents are not excited about the prospect of venturing into the area of orthodontics for their child. But its important to remember that putting off, or ignoring the inevitable, can just make things more difficult and expensive. In fact, early orthodontic treatment can make things easier for both parents and children. A pediatric dentist can identify malocclusion at its early stages. Malocclusion is the presence of crowded/ crooked teeth or bite problems. This type of treatment can often prevent more extensive, and potentially costly, treatments done at a later date. There are several causes of malocclusion. These include dental injuries, the early loss of primary teeth or habits such as thumb sucking, fingernail biting or lip

biting. A pediatric dentist can provide helpful advice on how to break these habits, thus preventing orthodontic problems in the future. The most obvious benefit of orthodontics is in improving the appearance of the patient’s smile, but there are much greater benefits to consider. Pediatric orthodontics can help to straighten crooked teeth, guide erupting teeth into position, correct bite problems and prevent the need for tooth extractions. Also, straight teeth are much easier to keep clean and healthy through regular brushing and flossing.

There are different types of orthodontic appliances. Some are fixed, and some are removable. During orthodontic treatment, dental hygiene is more important than ever. Its important to brush and floss regularly to keep both the teeth and the orthodontic appliance clean. In addition, regular dental checkups (along with orthodontic check-ups) can protect against tooth decay and gum disease. Finally, it’s important to contact the dentist promptly if and when an orthodontic appliance breaks in order to keep the treatment on-track. Ask your pediatric dentist about early orthodontic treatment for your child to minimize the level of treatment, and get your child’s smile to be the best it can be!

Intrinsic Motivation: the Key to Student Achievement By Mark Tolbert

Intrinsic motivation is the key to a student’s school success. Encouraging children to work hard on homework and in school is far more effective than just encouraging them to strive for high grades and test scores. The right kind of praise inspires motivation, and therefore, achievement. Many children are extrinsically motivated by rewards such as praise from teachers and parents, grades or other factors. However, there are many ways that you can foster intrinsic motivation, even if you cannot convince your child to love algebra or writing papers. Here are a few effective strategies to motivate your child: Encourage your child to value hard work. Emphasize the importance of perseverance in all that your child does, especially in school. Learning is

a journey that requires goal setting and constant dedication, and your child needs to know that it isn’t always easy. When it comes to learning, progress is success. Nurture a child’s inner curiosity. Challenge your child to explore new topics, question assumptions and never take knowledge for granted. This encourages independent learning and learning for the sake of learning. Congratulate your child when you notice him or her coming up with new ideas and solutions to problems. Point out the relevance. Continually point out how your child’s school work is relevant in daily life. It’s helpful to share ways that the subject matter is used in the real world or why it is important. Embrace a growth mindset. A growth mindset is the belief that

intelligence isn’t a fixed trait, but rather, one that can be nurtured and developed. Children who have a growth mindset understand that effort is the way to become smarter and recognize that a challenge is an opportunity to learn, not a road block. Parents who hold high, but achievable, expectations for their children, praise their efforts, encourage them to learn from mistakes and point out that perseverance leads to learning fuel their children’s intrinsic motivation. These actions send the message that learning is continuous and requires persistence.

hile counting macros is not new to many people in the nutrition and fitness industry, there are many people who have never heard of this healthy way of eating. Even those who have heard of it are often very confused as to how to calculate and keep track of their needs. While the following information may sound a bit complicated and involved, once you follow these instructions and spend about fifteen minutes setting everything up, it’s actually quite easy to eat this way.

Counting

101:

Macros

Eating Healthy for Life By Ayse Sukola

“Macro” is short for “macronutrient.” Macronutrients are nutrients that provide energy (or calories). The three macros you need to track are carbohydrates (carbs), proteins and fats. They each have their own specific roles and functions in the body, which vary in quality and supply us with energy. Protein helps to build and repair blood cells, DNA and muscle tissue; it produces hormones and enzymes and acts as a transporter in the body. Protein contains 4 calories per gram. Healthy sources of protein include meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, eggs, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils, protein powder and bars. Fats are necessary for brain health (70% of our brain is made up of fat), blood sugar regulation, hormone production and cell membrane health. Every cell in our bodies contains fat. Fat contains 9 calories per gram. Healthy sources of fat include oil, nuts, avocados, nut and seed butters, butter and egg yolks. Carbs are made up of sugars — the body’s main source of energy. They are broken down into two general categories: simple carbs or complex carbs. Complex carbs generally have more fiber, helping to slow the rise in blood sugar. Carbs contain 4 calories per gram. Healthy carb sources are fruits, whole grains and vegetables. Both macro and micronutrients are what make up our health. Micronutrients, which are only needed in small amounts, provide the foundation for many metabolic and physiological processes in the body. Vitamins and minerals are two types of micronutrients. We need macro and micronutrients for every function in our body: metabolism, building new tissue, hormone activity, immune function, nervous system maintenance, brain health and more. In other words, the nutrients

30

in food become a structural part of every cell in our bodies. Current eating patterns in the U.S. do not align with the healthy dietary guidelines. Most Americans exceed the recommendations for added sugars, saturated fats and sodium. The high percentage of the population that is overweight or obese suggests that many in the U.S. overconsume calories. More specifically, “More than two-thirds of all adults and nearly one-third of all children and youth in the United States are either overweight or obese” (Health. gov.com). Counting macros is important because: • You are fully aware of what is being put in your body, which encourages healthier, more well-balanced food choices. However, it’s not nearly as easy as calorie counting because you are keeping track of very precise numbers of nutrients. • It teaches you what healthy food portions look like. • If you exercise or have specific athletic goals, counting macros allows you to take care of your total calorie intake and really eat to support your training goals, ensuring you are always on top of your protein, fat and carbohydrate intake. Counting Macros vs. Counting Calories: Counting calories can be a less healthy way of monitoring your daily food intake. This is because we may still eat high carbohydrates, high fats, low fiber, high sugar, etc. In other words, we may be more likely to sacrifice the calories in a healthy food item (e.g. salmon), so that we can reserve those calories to eat a less healthy, nutrient-deficient food item (e.g. candy). Monitoring your macronutrient intake is more likely to ensure that your body is getting everything it needs. How do I find out how many macros I need each day? Daily macro allotment is exclusive to each individual because you must supply your age, gender, activity level, sports performance, body type, weight and what your specific health goals are (e.g. weight loss, weight maintenance or weight gain) for the most precise calculations.

What will I need? • Create a free account on MyFitnessPal.com, or download the free MyFitnessPal app on your smart phone. • Purchase a small food scale and measuring cups/spoons to keep in your kitchen for food preparation.

Then, calculate your daily calorie requirement, which equals your body weight in pounds multiplied by the activity level number that coincides with your goal (weight loss, weight maintenance or weight gain) in the following chart:

• •

grams of daily carbohydrates Protein Macros: (1800 x 0.30)/4 =135 grams of daily protein Fat Macros: (1800 x 0.30)/9= 60 grams of daily fat

Then, manually enter your macros into your MyFitnessPal account. • Click on “Goals” in the heading at the top of the MyFitnessPal homepage (if using the smart phone app, you must click on the “More” tab at the bottom of your screen first). • If you are tracking exercise, adjust “Activity Level” to your appropriate level (sedentary, moderately active, very active). • Under “Nutrition Goals” click on “Calorie & Macronutrient Goals,” and enter the calorie amount you calculated for yourself, and adjust carbohydrates, protein and fat to the percentages given by the calculator. Note: You’ll have to round to the nearest 5% increment unless you are a “Premium” member, which has a monthly fee of $9, or $44 yearly. It is worth it to pay for the membership because it’s much easier to strictly count your macros. (see Diagram 1 on page 32)

Very Active (exercise 5-7x a week)

For example, a sedentary person weighing 150 lbs., who works out twice a week for an hour and wants to lose weight, would make the following calculation: 150x12 =1800, which mean he/she can start at 1800 calories per day. Next, divide macronutrients into your daily calorie allotment. For a starting point, your diet should consist of 30% of protein, 40% carbs and 30% fat. So for an 1800 calorie diet: • Carbs = 4 grams /per calorie • Protein = 4 grams/per calorie • Fat = 9 grams /per calorie • Carbs Macros: (1800 x 0.40) /4= 180

Finally, enter your daily food intake, and track your macros in MyFitnessPal. • To get started, click on the “Food” link on the website, or the “Diary” tab at the bottom of your smartphone screen. • Then, click the “Add Food” link below the appropriate meal. • You can then search for a food, enter it manually, or scan the barcode of the food you are eating with your device’s camera. • Adjust serving size as necessary, then click “Add Food to Diary” on the website, or click the check mark at the top of your smartphone screen. Macros

The diagrams shown below correspond with the MyFitnessPal app used on a smart device.

Continued from page 31

Click the “Goals” heading at top of website homepage or under the “More” tab on the app. Adjust “Activity Level” for tracking exercise. Then, click on “Calorie & Macronutrients Goals” under “Nutrition Goals.”

Diagram 2

Click “Food” link (on website) or “Diary” tab (at bottom of app screen). Click “Add Food” under the appropriate meal time. To view nutrition and macros: Click on the “Food” page (if you are using the website). Click the “Nutrition” tab at the bottom of the “Diary” screen (if you are using a smart device). Then, click “Nutrients” or “Macros” at the top of the app screen to view.

32

North Fulton Family Life | january 2017

The more you do this, the easier it gets, as MyFitnessPal remembers your prior foods and suggest things you normally eat. On the website, you’ll be able to see all of your food’s nutrients on the “Food” page as well as a running total of these nutrients at the bottom of the page. To keep track of your nutrients on your smartphone, scroll to the bottom of the “Diary” screen, and click the “Nutrition” button. You can then use the tabs at the top to see how your macros and calories are tracking for the day. At the end of each day, click on “Complete Entry.” (see Diagram 2)

By supplying your body with the nutrients it needs in the calories you consume, you will be more satiated and likely consume fewer calories overall. Add regular exercise to your lifestyle, and you will see dramatic results in your body’s composition, and your overall health and the way you feel will assuredly improve.

Interoperability: Smart Appliances By Michael Buckner default. This can be a great thing if you place focus on interoperability or a frustrating thing if you don’t.

Lately, there have been several new gadgets for the home, from coffee pots to washing machines, promising connectivity to a “home kit” of some kind. Even if you are not that enthused about your refrigerator going online to re-order milk, you may find yourself replacing your broken fridge and wondering which one to get. As examples of this increasingly occur, you’re going to have a smart home by

Viking makes fabulous ovens. They now have models with a smart meat thermometer that flashes the lights in the home when the turkey is done. Never burn the turkey again! But the only way to have this feature in your home is to have a Viking stove in conjunction with the interoperable light switches. The same is true with your garage door opener. One day, you will replace it, and when you do, you’ll

see that Liftmaster makes one that connects online and is controlled by your phone. Much like the oven, it can tell the alarm to arm, the home’s lights to turn off, the thermostat to change and more — if you’ve purchased interoperable dimmers and thermostats. But rather than talking to each other, the key to doing this right is choosing components that talk to a particular ecosystem. This is what Apple, Google and Amazon are trying to create, but many other companies exist that already have ecosystems in place. A few brands of these are Control4, Savant and Elan. These companies try to be “brand agnostic,” and communicate with whatever you buy. That way, you can pick out whatever new gadget you want, and know that it will work with everything else in your home. The price of these third-part ecosystems range from $500 to $5,000, depending on just how elaborate your plans are, but rest assured, knowing that this is currently a smarter approach than whatever Google and Amazon invent.

Kitchen Time with Your Kiddos! By Christy Noll

Eating healthy and planning well-balanced meals for your family can be daunting, especially if you have picky eaters in your home. So enlisting your children’s help to prepare healthy, simple meals can be very beneficial. While poor nutrition and childhood obesity are critical issues threatening

our society’s children’s short and long-term health, proper nutrition helps prevent unhealthy weight gain, promotes physical growth and enhances focus. As parents, it is our responsibility to lead by example and promote good nutrition for our family. What better way is there to show our kids healthy eating tips than to have them assist us in the kitchen?!

Try looking online and in cookbooks for meals that your family will like, which are properly balanced, containing the correct balance of nutrients. Pick recipes that you think your kids would enjoy helping you make—recipes that are not too time-consuming and don’t have an extreme amount ingredients. Center your meals around protein, vegetables and fruit, limiting or completely avoiding unhealthy carbohydrates and processed foods.

You should carefully consider cooking duties, making sure they are ageappropriate. For example, younger children should not be given projects that involve cutting with knives or using the oven/stove. Pinterest has excellent ideas on crafting fruit into fun animal shapes. Kids are more likely to eat kiwi and banana with strawberries if they are made into the shape of a monkey rather than just piled into a bowl. Engaging your kids in the kitchen promotes family time, introduces them to different foods, and hopefully, it will incite them to make healthier food choices at mealtime.

The DOs and DON’Ts of Successful Furniture Arranging By Keely Woodford LIFESTYLE Many mistakes in furniture placement are made because it’s difficult for many people to visualize the three-dimensional effect of furniture arrangement in advance. A floor plan is a necessary ingredient of furniture placement pre-planning, but you must also take into consideration the dimensional qualities of furniture as well. This is where a professional decorator’s expertise will save you time and money!

DON’T block a view from a picture window—especially if it’s a good one! Placing tall chairs and a lamp on a table parked smack in the center of a picture window is a big no-no. Choice and placement of furniture should complement rather than conflict with architectural features. DO plan a furniture grouping that won’t conflict with your window. A sofa might fit below it, flanked by two end tables with lamps—creating a symmetrical furniture grouping and allowing your picture window to take center stage. DON’T place only wooden pieces of furniture along one wall or at one end of a room. Too many wooden pieces in one cluster tend to have a cold, inhospitable look. DO mix wooden pieces with upholstered furniture for texture

contrast and interest. Rich, polished wood tones look more so when contrasted by handsome fabric and vice versa. DON’T use too many matched pairs of tables, lamps or chairs in one room. Matching pieces help unify a room, but too many pairs will make your room resemble a furniture store. DO achieve variety by choosing some similar, but not exactly matching, pieces to balance each other. For instance, two, non-matching lamps of similar size and shape would be the perfect solution. L
