1. You do so much with writing and education. Let’s start with your role at Liverpool High School. At Liverpool High School, I work with ninth and 10th grade special needs students as a “program manager.” This means I attend classes with them and act as a sort of tutor for the group when they are not in those classes. I also work one-on-one with more severely autistic children to keep them safe and help them reach their educational goals. 2. Can you tell us about The Writer’s Life class that you teach? What can students expect and who is it for? The Writer’s Life is a series of three classes (each eight weeks long) at the Downtown Writers Center. They are designed for people who would like to write but are reticent and have little idea where to start or have tried and have become frustrated with the process. It is a group of like-minded folks like themselves, and an instructor (myself), who has navigated those same waters and arrived at a place of success, or the least satisfaction, in the author’s journey. The first class is for beginners and is designed to open the gates of their imagination and creativity and allow them to write unhindered by doubt. We do a lot of discussions and prompt writing in that first class. In the second phase, we take what they’ve been able to create, their rough drafts, and teach them how to self-edit. We use the tried-and-true methods of successful fiction 8 | FAMILY TIMES DECEMBER 2023

writers. The third class introduces them to the process of workshopping, which is introducing their work to others and being open to feedback. They learn how to give and take constructive feedback, which is designed to help them get their pieces to their top potential. The courses start in the early fall and end at the beginning of the summer of the next year. 3. Among all of the roles you play in the industry, do you have a favorite? Having been a teacher, lecturer, and editor of fiction, as well as a writer of fiction myself, my favorite role is that of an actual writer. While I love imparting knowledge and wisdom about the craft to eager minds, giving feedback, and waxing poetic to burgeoning young authors, the role of the author is my favorite. Make no mistake, it is the hardest role. It is the most solitary role. For those reasons, it’s not necessarily the most fun, but it does bring the greatest level of satisfaction to me. To create something from the ether, characters, plot, and setting, and bring it to life in the mind of the reader, is the most fulfilling thing I could ever do. So, while I love all my roles, the role of the writer is my favorite. 4. What are your future goals with fiction writing? My goals remain the same. I’m always striving to continue producing meaningful, entertaining, and well-written stories and finding a home for them. If that means

collecting them all in another collection, so be it. That would be great! But if they only live floating around in various magazines and ezines, that’s fine too. Even if they’re not published at all, the goal is always that they just be written and shared. I’m forever trying to bring a little bit of joy to some new reader out there who has a taste for the fantastic like I do. I think all authors are just trying to make connections through their work, even if it’s with people they never actually get a chance to meet. he first Festival of Trees was held on Dec. 4, 1985.

It started as (and continues to be) a fundraiser for the Everson Museum of Art. That first year, there were 47 decorated trees and $27,000 was raised. It was so successful, the museum decided to turn it into an annual tradition. This year’s festival will be held from Dec. 2-16. “It’s always been a popular event in the city because of the displays,” said Liz Herrick, the Members Council chair. “You can spend time with a best friend, you can spend time with your family, or you can enjoy being there by yourself. It’s a onestop holiday experience. We try to provide something for everyone.” They’ve certainly succeeded. The 2023 edition of the Festival of Trees & Light will feature: art making activities for all ages, a marketplace (with more than 600 items made by local artisans and crafts10 | FAMILY TIMES DECEMBER 2023

people), live entertainment, and the main attraction, decorated trees, wreaths, and other seasonal items which are donated by members of the community. Tickets are available at the door – or you can purchase them on the museum’s website for a discount. “[The Festival of Trees & Light] really puts you in the holiday spirit,” said Herrick. “And when I say ‘holiday,’ I’m talking about a variety of holidays, not just Christmas; we also acknowledge Kwanzaa and Hannukah and the Winter Solstice. And we continue to try to find ways to embrace as many celebrations as possible as we design our programs.”

Rosamond Gifford Zoo Announces “Dragons Reign!” Exhibit The Rosamond Gifford Zoo will have a new exhibit in 2024 – but it won’t feature live animals. Instead, from Memorial Day weekend until Halloween, families can visit 10 “species” of animatronic dragons (they will include a Chinese Dragon and a Western Dragon, and range in height from five to 20 feet). “Dragons Reign! will be an incredible experience for our guests, providing great entertainment and inspiring the imagination,” said Carrie Large, executive director of Friends of the Zoo, in a press release. “Dragon mythology is prevalent in many cultures – past and present – around the world, and these dragons reflect both the commonality and diversity of global cultures.”

ith higher credit card interest rates, consumers will feel more of a pinch with holiday gift shopping this year. Throw in the costs of holiday cards, decorating, baking, holiday dinners, and unplanned purchases, and holiday shopping can add up to a heap of change.

MONEY Many people are set back financially for months, if not longer, following the holiday season. One big reason for this is that credit cards make it easy to overspend, leaving individuals and families to suffer the consequences later. The problem with credit cards isn’t just the monthly payments; it’s the long-term cost from accrued interest. So, what can you do to ensure you start the new year without new debt? First, create a holiday budget. Include gifts, food, decorations, postage for holiday cards, wrapping supplies, and the babysitter for your shopping trip. Then review your list and decide where you can cut costs. Gifts to extended family and friends are an excellent place to start. Talk to those you exchange gifts with, and see if they’ll either forego the gift exchange or set a dollar limit. Another option for families or groups is to draw names. This will reduce the number of gifts everyone has to buy. Doing a white elephant gift exchange is also a fun option. Planning your gift budget based on value rather than the amount to spend on each person is also an excellent way to reduce your holiday expenses. Decide in advance on a gift value for each gift recipient. Then look for great buys. Let’s say you’ve decided on a gift value of $50 for your sister. Now, try to find a gift that’s a $50 value but only costs you $30 or $40. If you have many gifts to buy, this can shave a lot of expense. Do you usually send out more holiday cards than you

receive? If so, opt instead for a phone call during the holiday season. This is particularly meaningful for those you don’t talk to often, and it won’t cost you a thing. Another option is to only mail cards to those who send one to you. Cut back on the baking. When’s the last time you heard someone complain of a shortage of holiday goodies? Probably never. Most of us eat far more than we’d like to just because it’s there. If you’re hosting any parties, hold potluck dinners instead of playing head chef. You could offer to provide the meat. Then ask everyone to bring a specific type of dish to avoid duplicates. Eliminate your babysitting expenses by exchanging babysitting with a neighbor – that way, each of you has the opportunity to shop without the kids. Plan your shopping before you head out. Do online research to find the best deals on the items on your shopping list. If you can’t find a good deal on something, consider an alternative. Also, check newspaper fliers and the ‘coupon’ page of the store websites you plan to shop. If possible, leave credit cards at home when you go shopping to avoid impulse purchases. Many people spend far more than they intend by purchasing irresistible spur of the moment bargains. Finally, if you use your credit card, try to make a realistic plan to double or triple your monthly payments. This will reduce your interest expenses and quickly eliminate your debt.

ould it be the holiday season without cookies? This year, skip the baking and head to Armory Square instead. Cathy Pemberton started Cathy’s Cookie Kitchen a decade ago.

“I was working part time with the Syracuse City School District, and I wanted to move out of that into my own business,” she said. “I thought about what I was good at, and I’ve always loved baking, so I decided to do cookies, because everybody loves cookies…I did all of the fairs and festivals, anywhere there was a farmer’s market, and that’s how I built my business. And then once I had enough wholesale business, I started the store.” Today, it offers several flavors of the sweet treat – all of which are made right in the store. The most popular are s’mores, cookies ‘n cream, chocolate chip with peanut butter cups, crownie bites, and chocolate chip (“I sell probably twice the amount of those,” Pemberton said). During the holidays, customers can also purchase holiday gift boxes – they come in three different sizes – and cookie trays. “I make the dough here; it’s not shipped in from anywhere else, it’s not made from a mix. Specializing in cookies in that way makes me unique,” said Pemberton. “And I think the customer service, because I really go out of my way to do a good job for people and make sure everything is perfect when it leaves here. hen you walk into Mixed Methods in Hanover Square, it’s hard to miss the giant cork map of the United States on the wall, with pins spread across it.
