EDUCATOR OF THE MONTH
Wendy Tracy, Speech Therapist at the North Syracuse Early Education Program BY JANELLE DAVIS
1. What is your background and what do you teach? I have a B.S. in Communication Sciences & Disorders and an M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology. Both degrees are from Syracuse University. I am a speech therapist at the North Syracuse Early Education Program, which is part of the North Syracuse Central School District. This is an integrated program, where the classrooms contain eight children designated with special needs and eight children with no special needs. I work with children with special needs aging in the range of 3-5 years. I work collaboratively with a variety of other professionals, such as OT, PT, psychologists, social workers, vision therapists, and teaching assistants to provide a comprehensive program to meet children’s special needs. 2. What is the process when a student needs speech therapy during school? Parents need to contact their home school district to get an evaluation. Once 8 | FAMILY TIMES NOVEMBER 2023
the assessment is completed, a CPSE (Committee on Preschool Education) meeting occurs to determine if the child qualifies for any type of special education service or program. If a student is referred for services, they may attend a special education preschool program, such as NSEEP, or get related services within their home or preschool depending on their need.
4. What is the most rewarding thing about your job?
3. Depending on a child’s speech disorder, can they practice skills at home and in the community?
Janelle Davis is a freelance writer living in Fairmount with her family.
All children can practice their communication and language skills at home and within the community. Parents can read to their children to expose them to new vocabulary and have them point to and label pictures. A variety of WH questions can be practiced just by having simple conversations with children. Children can practice following directions while completing their daily routines. When parents take their children to places within the community, it exposes them to new vocabulary and opportunities to interact with others.
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing the progress of the students. Many children start with our program with limited functional language, and by the time they leave for kindergarten, they can communicate with their peers and adults.

Dickens Christmas returns to Skaneateles for 30th year BY COURTNEY KLESS
T
he holiday season is almost here! And there are plenty of ways to celebrate around Central New York.
One event you won’t want to miss is Dickens Christmas, which is marking a milestone this year. It was created three decades ago by some of the merchants in downtown Skaneateles. “We’ve always been a big summer destination, and they were essentially also trying to sell us as a winter and holiday destination,” said Hilary Fenner, executive director of the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce. “After they did it for a year or two, they were kind of overwhelmed because it was going really well, and they ended up hiring an acting troupe and eventually handing it off to the Chamber. We work with Scarlett Rat Entertainment, and the two of us co-host this event, which we put together to help the small businesses and the local community.” Dickens Christmas begins the Friday after Thanksgiving with the World’s Smallest Christmas Parade (all of the characters make their way into the village). “It’s supposed to mimic Charles Dickens, who traveled through this area, arriving in 10 | FAMILY TIMES NOVEMBER 2023
Skaneateles with the Queen of England at the time, and there was all this fanfare,” said Fenner. Dickens Christmas then continues each Saturday and Sunday through Christmas Eve (five weekends in total), with A Christmas Carol trunk shows, horse drawn carriage rides (Nov. 24 and 25), roasted chestnuts, appearances by Scrooge and Father Christmas, and the main event, caroling at the gazebo, held each day at 2 p.m. “That’s an iconic part of Dickens because you’re with a group of people, by the lake, caroling, and just getting into the holiday spirit,” said Fenner. “There’s enough going on that you’re never going to be bored, but there’s not so much going on that you feel rushed and panicked that you’re going to miss something.” “We put in a lot of time and effort to make sure the town looks beautiful, so people can come and have a wonderful time.” Courtney Kless is the Editor in Chief of Family Times. She lives in Camillus with her husband.

PARENTING
How to Create Thankful Kids BY SARAH LYONS
14 | FAMILY TIMES NOVEMBER 2023
PARENTING
A
s Thanksgiving approaches, it is nice to reflect on and appreciate our blessings. In our family, each member writes down something they are thankful for on Thanksgiving Day, and we read them aloud at dinner. This is a fun exercise that teaches our children to show gratitude for things otherwise taken for granted. We enjoy that daily pause to remember what we are grateful for; but, what about every other day of the year? How do we teach our kids to be grateful all year long?
Model Gratefulness
The easiest and most effective way to start teaching your children gratitude is to model it yourself. Let your children hear you talk about the things you are thankful for. “I am so grateful for this beautiful day today so that we can go to the park” or “I am so thankful for a great job to pay for our home and our food.” You can also do as we have on Thanksgiving Day, and go around the table at dinner and name something you are thankful for any night of the year. When kids acknowledge the blessings they have in their lives, they will begin to take note and appreciate them.
Serve as a Family
Families who do service projects together tend to be families who appreciate what they have more. When children see that some are less fortunate, they will develop a desire to help others and make a difference. Not only do they become more aware of others and the blessings in their own lives, but they are more likely to give of their time and treasures for a lifetime.
Teach Them To Say Thank You
From a young age, teach children to say thank you. Encourage kids to say thank you for any acts of service or gifts. Writing thank you notes is a great way to provide kids with the opportunity to thank someone for the gifts they receive and the time it took to purchase them. Encourage a “it’s the thought that counts” policy, and explain that it isn’t the actual gift itself, but the thought behind the purchase that we are grateful for.
Take Care of Property
Teach kids the value of their property by
showing them the importance of caring for their belongings. Clothes cost money so they should not be on the floor in piles. Toys cost money so if one is broken due to misuse, do not rush to replace it.
Say No
It isn’t healthy to say yes to every request your child has. An answer of “no” or “not right now” teaches children the value of delayed gratification and encourages gratefulness for occasional treats. If a child is allowed to purchase a toy every time he visits the store, this will become expected. If the toy is purchased as a special reward or with their own money, the child will appreciate it much more.
Teach Them the Cost of Things
Parents know everything costs money and it adds up fast. Allow your child to come along to the grocery store and have them help you find the best deal on food they would like to purchase or allow them to bring their own allowance and purchase something they would like. Point out how much it costs when you go out to eat as a family or make a large purchase of groceries or other items the family needs. Take care to avoid blaming or anger when discussing the cost of items and use the opportunity to teach. When children understand the true cost of items, they are more likely to appreciate the purchase in the first place.
Give Them Chores
When children have chores and responsibilities, they begin to understand how much work goes into cleaning, yard work, or other household tasks. Some families may choose to give an allowance for tasks completed, which can help kids learn to budget and understand the value of hard work and in turn develop gratitude for the work that others do. The main thing to remember as you encourage gratefulness in children is to model the behavior. Thank them for their hard work, acknowledge and thank others for their acts of service, help kids understand the value of items, and give them responsibilities that teach them hard work. We don’t have to eat turkey every day to be thankful for the blessings that surround us all year. FAMILY TIMES NOVEMBER 2023 | 15

NEW RECIPES you can make for these plates
Elevate Your Thanksgiving Table with These Plates and Dinnerware Sets
F
riends and family will soon come together to celebrate Thanksgiving – and the dinner table is at the heart of those celebrations. But selecting the perfect plates for your feast is not just about functionality; it’s a chance to infuse your table with style and charm. From elegant ceramic dinnerware to convenient disposable options, the plates on this list are sure to impress your guests (plus they are all highly rated on Amazon).
FOR APPETIZERS
Appetizers help set the stage for your holiday feast, so you need a plate that is up to the task. We had to, of course, include at least one option on this list with a turkey. This set of four plates also features sunflowers, leaves, and pumpkins, and at 8.75 inches, is the perfect size for appetizers or salads. Complete the set with the matching serving platter and bowls. SHOP HERE
For a more classic look that you can use 365 days a year, check out Mora Ceramics. Their 8-inch plates are crafted from paladin clay, making them “more durable,” and with four neutral colorways (chai, earl gray, vanilla white, and assorted), they’ll seamlessly match all of your holiday décor. SHOP HERE
Both of these plates are dishwasher safe, so you can spend less time doing dishes and more time with family. And the smaller size will encourage your friends and family to save room for dinner. FAMILY TIMES NOVEMBER 2023 | 17
FEATURE
For a more festive option, try this 16-piece set from Pfaltzgraff, which includes dinner plates, salad plates, bowls, and mugs (each is safe to put in the dishwasher or microwave). With warm autumnal colors, an intricate berry and leaf pattern, and a turkey on one of the plates, it’s also the perfect choice for Thanksgiving. You’ll be using them for years to come! SHOP HERE
DISPOSABLE OPTIONS
We also had to include some disposable products on this list, so you can enjoy your gathering without the cleanup. With settings for 16 guests or more, all of these options are great for larger family events – or you can save the leftovers for the other upcoming holidays.
FOR DINNER
Speaking of the main course, there’s no denying that it is one of the focal points of Thanksgiving. Celebrate in style with these 11-inch pumpkin and sunflower plates from Certified International. Your friends and family members will love how much space they have for turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes – plus, like many of the items on this list, these plates can be used in the microwave, so you can warm up your leftovers. SHOP HERE
But we can’t forget about the younger family members. Decorated with a turkey, these festive plates are made of melamine, so they’re not fragile. Tiny Expressions also offers a customizable version, where you can add a name (and there are options for Christmas, Hanukkah, and more). You’ll wish you had a seat at the kid’s table! SHOP HERE
FOR DESSERT
When it comes to Thanksgiving, we often focus on the turkey and the many side dishes that go along with it. But we can’t ignore the grand finale of the meal – dessert! A departure from the typical yellows, oranges, and reds of fall, these 9-inch plates are adorned with autumn-themed items 18 | FAMILY TIMES NOVEMBER 2023
in hues of teal and white. They are just the right size for a piece of pumpkin or apple pie, but they are also great for appetizers or salads, if you’d prefer. And, as a bonus, you can use them all season long, not just on Thanksgiving. SHOP HERE
For smaller desserts, check out this pumpkin-shaped serving platter. There are currently three color options to choose from: orange, white, and blue. If you’re looking for more pumpkin-themed items to complete your collection, Nat & Jules also offers mugs, butter dishes, salt and pepper shakers, and spoon rests. SHOP HERE
DINNERWARE SETS
It can be challenging to find coordinating plates, bowls, and cups for your holiday table. Simplify your next gathering by purchasing a dinnerware set. Whether you’re using it every day, or for special occasions like Thanksgiving, this three-piece set from Famiware combines style and practicality. The white finish and brown rim complement a variety of table décor styles, and each piece (dinner plate, salad plate, cereal bowl) is dishwasher safe and scratch resistant. It’s a win-win! SHOP HERE
This set has two different sized plates (perfect for appetizers and dessert), plus paper napkins, for up to 24 friends or family members. The bright fall leaves and ‘Give Thanks’ message in the center will add a festive touch to your table. SHOP HERE
If you’re looking for something a little heavier duty for dinner, take a look at these two sets. The first, from Laura Stein, will bring a touch of sophistication to your table. The classic white design of the dinner and salad plates is enhanced by burgundy and gold details, creating a vintage-inspired look – but they are created with “heavy-duty plastic,” so they are sturdy enough to hold a variety of Thanksgiving dishes. SHOP HERE
The second (also made of plastic) has everything you need for a fancy Thanksgiving feast: scalloped dinner plates, scalloped salad/dessert plates, forks, knives, spoons, and foil-stamped napkins. You can choose from gold or rose gold. SHOP HERE

Check out these Liverpool attractions before a visit to Lights on the Lake BY COURTNEY KLESS
F
amilies from around Central New York – and beyond – will soon head to Liverpool for Lights on the Lake. Here are some things you can do while you’re in town.
PARKS ONONDAGA LAKE PARK Dubbed “The Central Park of Central New York,” Onondaga Lake Park just may be Liverpool’s most popular attraction. And there’s a lot for families to do there: walking trails, pickleball courts, a skate park, and a boundless playground, to name a few. The park is also home to the Salt Museum, which chronicles Syracuse’s rich salt mining history (it is open seasonally from May to October). But keep in mind, the park closes at 4:30 p.m. each day of Lights on the Lake. Where: 106 Lake Dr. More information: onondagacountyparks.com. 22 | FAMILY TIMES NOVEMBER 2023

SKÄ•NOÑH – GREAT LAW OF PEACE CENTER The Skä•noñh – Great Law of Peace Center is dedicated to preserving and sharing Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) heritage. Its permanent exhibits explore Creation, the Thanksgiving Address, the Great Law of Peace, and European Contact. Where: 6680 Onondaga Lake Parkway. More information: skanonhcenter.org.
FOOD AND ENTERTAINMENT HEID’S Heid’s has been around for more than a century. It once appeared on the show Man vs. Food! While you’re there, make sure to try one of its famed hot dogs (its website says they “have a uniquely delectable flavor”).

LIVERPOOL PUBLIC LIBRARY When the weather is nice, set aside some time to visit the Liverpool Public Library’s Dinosaur Garden. As you may have already guessed, it features three large dinosaur sculptures (their names are Mari, Dhari, and ZuZu). Where: 310 Tulip St. More information: lpl.org.
PLAYDAY If you’re looking for a place where your kids can release some pent up energy, check out Playday. Designed for children ages 6 and under, the space includes a grocery store, a kitchen, and a performance stage. There’s also a space just for babies. Where: 4999 W. Taft Road. More information: playdaycny.com.

F
or more than three decades, families around Central New York have been making Lights on the Lake part of their holiday traditions. The event returns to Onondaga Lake Park this month. Here is everything you need to know:
Special Nights
Lights on the Lake will once again begin with a Charity Drive-Thru on Nov. 13 and a Doggy Drive-Thru on Nov. 14. The show will also end with five charity nights (Jan. 8-12). All will feature a discounted admission rate ($5). On Nov. 15, Salute Our Troops Night, all active and retired military members will receive free admission.
Lights on the Lake 5K
First held in 2019 to celebrate the show’s 30th anniversary, the Lights on the Lake 5K is returning for another year. The race will take place on Nov. 19 at 6 a.m. (so runners are able to see the displays). A limited number of spots are available.
