EDITOR’S NOTE
I know I say this every year, but I love fall. It’s one of my favorite things about living in Central New York.
And with the cooling weather and changing leaves, it’s the perfect time to get out of the house, whether it’s to go on a theme walk (page 18), take family photos (page 19), or visit one of the many apple orchards or pumpkin patches the area is home to (pages 20-21).
Halloween will also be here before we know it. If you’re still searching for the perfect costume for your child, turn to page 14 for some ideas. And make sure to check out our Halloween events on pages 37-40 – there’s something for every age.
As always, thank you for reading!

Tanya Reese, Program Coordinator for the Cancer Services Program
BY JANELLE DAVIS1. Tell us a little bit about your background and how you came to be the program coordinator for the Cancer Services Program?
I’ve worked for the Onondaga County Health Department for a little over 13 years now, and have a true passion for public health. I’ve been the program coordinator for the Cancer Services Program since 2016. My job connects me with the community and brings me such joy knowing I can assist individuals of Onondaga County one resident at a time by providing such an important health screening.
2. For those unfamiliar, what is the Cancer Services Program?
The Cancer Services Program provides breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer
screenings and diagnostic services at no cost to individuals without health insurance or facing other barriers to completing their screenings. The services that are provided are free: clinical breast exams and mammograms for individuals ages 40 and older; pap and HPV tests for people with a cervix ages 40-64; and colorectal cancer screening beginning at age 45. The Cancer Services Program may also assist individuals who do not have health insurance and have been diagnosed with breast, cervical, colorectal, or prostate cancer to enroll in the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program.
3. How does your department educate the public about the importance of cancer screening?
Our staff works with community partners
within Onondaga County to conduct group and one-on-one education sessions within the community about the importance of routine cancer screenings. We attend community events and utilize free and paid media to promote the importance of breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screenings.
4. How can people get involved with the program and its services?
Uninsured individuals can call our office at (315) 435-3653 Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. or visit ongov.net/ health/cancerscreening to register online for a free cancer screening exam.
This groundbreaking program, in partnership with Syracuse University’s Burton Blatt Institute and Nine Mile Press, connects teens with disabilities to professional writers, many of whom are themselves disabled. Teens in this program will be able to express themselves through a variety of writing styles, such as poetry and creative non-fiction.

The 2023/24 Broadway in Syracuse season will feature Tony Award-winning musicals, movie adaptations
BY COURTNEY KLESSWould you like to see a Broadway show right here in Central New York?
Well, you’re in luck! The 2023/24 Broadway in Syracuse season will feature Tony Award-winning musicals, movie adaptations, and more – all touring from New York City.
“There’s nothing like seeing something live in the theatre,” said Tina Niles, NAC Entertainment/Famous Artists Broadway in Syracuse. “You’re sharing that experience with 2,000 other people, watching something come to life on stage.”
The Famous Artists Broadway Theater Series was founded by Murray Bernthal more than six decades ago. For 20 years, he partnered with Tony Award-winning producer Albert Nocciolino, bringing productions like Les Misérables, Mamma Mia, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, The Phantom of the Opera, and Wicked to Syr-
acuse, and helping the series gain national recognition. Nocciolino has carried on the tradition after Murray’s passing in 2010.
Broadway in Syracuse opened the 2023/24 at the end of September with six performances of Mean Girls. And it has five more shows on its schedule: Disney’s Aladdin; Hairspray; Pretty Woman; Hadestown; and Six (you can click on the links in the box for a description of each). All will take place at the Landmark Theatre in downtown Syracuse.
“If you’ve never attended a show, you should,” said Niles.
“It’s an experience from the beginning to end.”
UPCOMING PERFORMANCES:
Disney’s Aladdin
Nov. 8-12
Hairspray
Jan. 30-Feb. 3
Pretty Woman
March 19-23
Hadestown

Rosamond Gifford Zoo Introduces Amur Tiger Cubs
Families can now visit two new residents of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.
The Amur tiger cubs, whose names are Zuzaan and Soba, were born at the end of April.
“Since the birth of the cubs, our team of tiger care specialists have worked tirelessly to provide routine vaccinations and regular health check-ups to ensure their well-being,” said Ted Fox, executive director, in a press release. “We’ve all waited for this moment, and know the public is anxious to see them. Now we get to enjoy seeing the curious tiger cubs as they explore their exhibit – all while knowing that the care they received these past few months has set them up for a lifetime of health and success.”

Museum of the Earth Re-Opens Dino Zone
An exhibit at Ithaca’s Museum of the Earth has a new look.
“Our newly reimagined Dino Zone is a world where dinosaurs roam free, and young explorers can touch, play, and learn in an interactive environment,” the museum said in a Facebook post. It features life-sized dinosaur murals, a fossil dig pit, a play and learn area, and a dinosaur-themed reading nook.

Landmark Theatre Announces Upgrades
If you’re planning to attend a show at a local theatre this season, you may notice a few changes.
“The Landmark Theatre has been hard at work over the summer, making some fantastic updates to our beloved theatre to ensure its long-term preservation and to improve the customer experience,” it said in a press release.
Those upgrades include: a lobby restoration, a new auditorium roof, and an expanded women’s restroom on the main floor (with one new ADA stall and one new ambulatory stall).

FALL HAS OFFICIALLY ARRIVED IN CENTRAL NEW YORK!
Are you hoping to take advantage of the cooler weather? Turn to page 18 for eight theme walks you can take with your child.
Or maybe you’re looking to schedule family photos. We share some of the best spots for them in Central New York on page 19
And, of course, don’t forget to check out our annual fall activities guide on page 20-23, which features area apple orchards, pumpkin patches, corn mazes, and much more!
EIGHT FALL THEME WALKS
BY KATY CLARKFall is the perfect time of year to get outside. And what better way to experience all the season has to offer than by taking a walk? Walking is fun and easy, plus it provides a boost to your physical and mental health. Going on a walk with your kids lets them notice new things and meet new people along the way.
Here are eight fall theme walks that you and your children can take around your neighborhood:
formations as they prepare to head south. Keep track of how many different birds you see on a walk in a field journal.
ART WALK
The object of an art walk is to collect as many items related to fall as you can, such as leaves, sticks, and acorns. Then take them home and create! You can glue twigs and leaves together to make forest creatures or try your hand at making leaf prints. One of the easiest projects my children enjoyed when they were younger was sticking fallen leaves of all colors, shapes, and sizes onto contact paper.
On this walk, have your child focus on their senses. Ask your child what colors they see. Touch the leaves that have fallen. Smell the air and ask if it smells different than in the summer. Listen to the birds or squirrels. Don’t forget to taste fall, too, by sampling apples or cider when you get home.
6. NIGHTTIME WALK
Just because the days are getting shorter doesn’t mean you have to stay inside when it gets dark. On your nighttime walk, see if you can find constellations like the Big Dipper. Watch for the blinking lights of planes as they cross the sky. Take flashlights or headlamps and look for critters in your neighborhood.
There are many printable scavenger hunts available online – or you can get creative and make your own. Have your kids look for distinctly autumnal items like fallen leaves, acorns, or pumpkins. Once they find an item, have them check it off their list. Most kids love carrying the list on a clipboard, too. It’s very official!
7. BUDDY WALK
Sometimes all that is needed to make a walk more exciting is a friend. Invite one or two buddies to traverse the neighborhood with you or pick a new location for your walk. Simply traveling through a novel area can be an exciting change of pace for most kids. Go for a walk around the block or take a friend on any of the eight walks here.
Use descriptive words to engage your child in talking about fall. Ask them why they like this season. Then tell them why you like it. For example, “I like fall because the colors of the leaves are red, orange, and yellow.” I used to tell my kids that I liked fall because the weather is cooler and it feels good to wear sweaters.
4. BIRD WATCHING WALK
Does fall bring the arrival or departure of different kinds of birds in your area? Talk about the birds you saw this summer and imagine where they live now. Notice which birds fly in V-shaped
8. SCIENCE WALK
Gather leaves that have fallen from trees as well as those from plants. Ask how the leaves are different. Is one kind changing color but the other is not? Look for any black spots on leaves and talk about decay. Notice the evergreen trees in your area and discuss why they do not change color. For extra credit, bring home leaves and press them between sheets of newspaper weighed down by books for a few days. This will preserve their shape and color without the leaves curling and drying out.
