rA Common Missionr Upstate Golisano celebrates 10 years

ights on the Lake isn’t the only one reaching a milestone this year. At the end of September, Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital celebrated its 10th birthday.

“There is a whole culture here,” says Executive Director Gregory Conners. “The nurses and the physicians and the folks who clean the floors and everything all feel a common mission to do the best that they can for children. It’s really neat when it works and people recognize it.”

IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY Before the hospital opened on Sept. 23, 2009, there was a slogan: “Syracuse is the largest city to not have a children’s hospital in the country.” At the time, Upstate University Hospital and neighboring Crouse Hospital had pediatric floors (Crouse also had a neonatal ICU, which is still in use today), but there was no hospital devoted entirely to the treatment of children.

Conners – who took over for long-time director Thomas Welch at the beginning of March – says that Upstate Golisano now treats children from 22 counties in New York. He has witnessed the hospital’s impact on the Syracuse community firsthand.

“We had the 10th birthday party recently, and it was amazing to me how many people from the community came forward where the connection isn’t obvious, and yet they have a substantial interest in making this a really good place,” he says. “A lot of kids that we used to have to send to other cities for care, now we can take care of them here, so it really helps the quality of life for those families...I think we’ve made a big contribution to the city.”

‘A MORE COMFORTABLE EXPERIENCE’ The 71-bed hospital spans two floors, and includes a play area in each unit, a multi-denominational chapel and a family resource center, where patients can check out various types of media and learn more about their diagnosis. Housed on the 11th floor, the hospital’s Performance Center has hosted acts ranging from 2017 America’s Got Talent winner Darci Lynne to the casts of Mary Poppins, Elf and Cirque du Soleil.

“It can be really hard on kids to be in the hospital, away from their usual routine, their usual bed, their usual food and their home environment,” Conners says. “What we try to do is make it more comfortable for them, more familiar, and also to relieve their stress. And we know that if we do that, but don’t work on the parents’ stress, kids pick up on how their parents are feeling too.

It’s not just the kids who are here, it’s the whole family, so we try to make it a more comfortable experience for all concerned.”

One way Upstate Golisano does that is through the Child Life Program. Regina Lozito, the manager of the program, says its goal is to help patients and their families better cope during their hospitalization, something that can benefit children if they need additional procedures as adults.

“The hospital is a scary environment,” Lozito says. “We found that with that information, when they are in some sort of control or knowledgeable about what’s happening to them, they cope a lot better.”

play, pre-operative tours and a pet therapy program. To help patients keep up with their work, there is a school room equipped with smartboards, iPads and AV equipment, allowing them to attend a class or see their friends. They can also spend time in the multisensory environment. Originally designed for children with autism, patients are able to control the look of the room, calming their senses and helping them cope with their environment.

Lozito says Upstate Golisano was the first hospital in the country to have this type of room.

“They help in every way that they possibly can to make this more manageable and feel like as much as home as possible,” she says. “They do provide a lot of helpful things.”

Kathleen Froio, manager of media relations, says Upstate Golisano will continue to celebrate for the rest of the year, recognizing the hospital’s out-patient clinics, along with their staff.

The hospital held three parties at the end of September: one for patients and their families, one for staff and one for donors.

Patients, their families and staff members can also visit an art gallery on the 12th floor of the hospital that features photos from the past 10 years.

Upstate Golisano will have a 10th birthday display in Lights on the Lake this year.

Liverpool’s Kayla Weigelt has been staying on and off at Upstate Golisano since her son, Matthew, was diagnosed with leukemia in January.

Conners says while he was working at Children’s Mercy Hospital is Kansas City, he encountered an increasing number of patients with anxiety and suicidality. He has seen a similar pattern at Upstate Golisano, prompting a response by the hospital.

“Psychologists and mental health social workers have been added to the pediatric teams, and we continue to grow these resources,” Conners says.

Another area where Upstate Golisano is hoping to expand is behavioral health. In September, the hospital announced that it received a $3 million grant from Tom Golisano to build a new center for special needs. Conners says the new center will lead to better collaboration and decreased wait times.

“Like the mental health, we’ve really had a huge growth in the number of kids with autism and that sort of thing, that we really need to respond to,” Conners says. “The families have such a hard time managing, and if we can help them, it would really make a big difference. Those are two areas that we’re excited about, but we’re growing up in a lot of ways.”

at Brandano and his company work on holiday light displays all over the country. But for him, nothing compares to Lights on the Lake. The event is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

“There isn’t a parks department anywhere in the country that does as good of a job as they do in Syracuse,” Brandano says. “No event has that kind of sponsorship component to it and that kind of community involvement. They’ve done a really good job with it.

It’s because of key people and their vision.”

Brandano Displays – which Brandano runs with his brother John – has been involved with Lights on the Lake almost from the start. In 1990, following a rise in light displays in cities around the country (including one in Niagara Falls), DIRT Enterprises created a light display in Onondaga Lake Park. Named “Holiday in Lights,” the event was 0.5 miles long and featured only white lights. That caught the attention of the Brandano brothers.

“We were supplying displays to malls and to those cities that were destinations, and we kind of watched it,” Brandano says. “At that time, the concept of paying to see Christmas lights wasn’t part of the culture. But we were intrigued when all of sudden the company had people going to this thing, paying $5 to drive through and look at 30 displays or 25 displays, whatever it was at the time.” continued on page 14

continued from page 12 The next season, after DIRT Enterprises went out of business, Brandano Displays formed a partnership with Onondaga County Parks and the rest is history. At first, Onondaga County Parks leased the displays and Brandano Displays technicians would install them each season. Onondaga County Parks would eventually purchase the show for $500,000 in 2000 (there were more than 70 displays at the time).

Brandano Displays has continued to be involved with Lights on the Lake since then, working with the park staff to develop new displays and change section themes. “Of course, they have a lot of input,” Brandano says. “They’re really good at it. They look at what other people around the country do and we create displays for them.”

Having been involved with Lights on the Lake for almost 30 years, Brandano didn’t hesitate when asked about his most memorable experience.

“When we built the castle [in 2000], we needed to have something iconic,” Brandano says. “Generally, we try to keep things no more than 15 feet off the ground so it’s easy to install, it’s safe and people can do it without a whole lot of technical ability. We came up with a way that it would be easy to install and now it’s the trademark for the event. That was definitely the most exciting to see that all come together.”

“A KEY PLAYER” Electrician Bob Thomas marks 19 years at Lights on the Lake

hile Bob Thomas was living in Oswego, his family visited Lights on the Lake, usually with a supply of hot chocolate. Now entering his 19th season as an electrician for the event, he looks forward to continuing that tradition with the next generation.

“To me that’s what [Lights on the Lake] is all about: making an opportunity for family traditions,” Thomas says. “Now we’re solidly into that second generation where people can come to the show and say, ‘My dad or grandpa brought me to the show,’ and all three may even be sitting in the car together. Thomas and his partner are also tasked with making sure everything is safe electrically. Superintendent Dale Grinolds has been working at Onondaga Lake Park since 1992, and says Thomas strives to make the event as safe as possible not only for the Lights on the Lake staff, but for those walking through the park each day.

“He has a safety mindset,” Grinolds says. “Not just for himself, which as an electrician, clearly one would need to be safety oriented, but he recognized right away that I have full-time and seasonal employees handling these displays, handling the switches and the breakers, and he set about improving safety in particular.”

According to information provided by Onondaga County Parks, Lights on the Lake now includes approximately 600,000 lights and more than 300 displays. Grinolds says that Thomas has played an important role in the event’s growth.

“As we’ve expanded over time, he’s there at the table saying, ‘Well we have to do this in order to support that idea,’” Grinolds says.

“He’s a key player. He’ll be the first to tell you that he’s building on the contributions of those before him or those that are working with him, but in my opinion, he’s one of the key people.”

30+ MILES OF TRAILS Skiers of all abilities will now find over 15 miles of groomed, woodland trails,while folks who prefer to blaze their own trail will enjoy over 10 miles of ungroomed snow that makes for the perfect backcountry run. The Northview and Pines Junction Trails are all accessible to novice skiers, while the other trails range from “more difficult” to “most difficult” on terrain with elevations up to 400 feet.

Welcome to the “ADIRONDACKS OF CENTRAL NEW YORK”… Highland Forest!

Highland Forest’s Skyline Lodge is the perfect spot to hang out and warm up in front of the fireplace after a day on the trails. The lodge is perched 1,700 feet above Fabius and showcases the sweeping views of southern Onondaga County. The walls inside the Adirondack/Mission style lodge feature local history, while artwork and antiques add

ambience. Cross country skis and snowshoes are available at the rental shop and popular public programs include sleighrides, prime rib dinners and Valentine’s in the Forest. Starting mid-December, the snack bar will be open 9am-4pm on weekends, holidays and school breaks through February.

Experience the CHARM OF YESTERYEAR An old-fashioned horse-drawn sleigh ride through a snow-filled forest has family fun written all over it. Available weekends December 14 - February 23, twenty-minute rides at Highland Forest are from 11 am to 3:30 pm. In addition, rides will be offered during select school break dates. Group packages, which include a horse drawn ride and use of Skyline Lodge, are available for groups of up to 160 people.

When the Temperatures Drop, MAKE THE ZOO YOUR STOP! NATURE AT ITS BEST… Beaver Lake Nature Center Located in Baldwinsville, Beaver Lake is home to a natural winter wonderland featuring 10 miles of cross country and snowshoe trails with a multi-use trail offering seasonal leisure and workout opportunities for all. Dozens of programs including weekend guided walks, skiing/ snowshoeing under the full moon and school break activities for the little ones are offered throughout the season. Winter is also a great time to get started with the 100 Bird Challenge. Look for those rare visitors like the long-eared owl and pine siskin. This program encourages both beginner and veteran birders to come and watch for birds at Beaver Lake. First, register at the front desk and purchase a Birds of Beaver Lake checklist. Every time you see (or identify by song) a new species, write down the date you observed in the booklet. When you have reached 100 bird species, you will be rewarded with a T-shirt: “I Saw-whet at Beaver Lake, 100 birds”. The registration fee is $10 which includes the Birds of Beaver Lake checklist booklet.

Winter is a great time to visit Central New York’s Wildlife Conservation Center, known for its focus on supporting threatened and endangered species. The Rosamond Gifford Zoo is one of only 230 zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), ensuring visitors that it meets the highest standards for animal care and is actively engaged in wildlife conservation.

The zoo is home to more than 700 animals, including many that are native to cold climates and more active during our Central New York winters.
