FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Community Members, This annual report card issued by the Oregon Department of Education offers a full picture of our school. It describes the diversity of our student body, our enrollment trend and our average class size. It also explains how our students are performing in comparison to other schools and whether our students are making sufficient progress over time. Finally, the report card describes the academic program of our school. The state uses this report card to focus its supports for our school and also to inform education policy. I use it as a key guide for understanding our school’s strengths and also the
areas where we need to improve. I welcome your questions and comments about our report card and also your involvement in how we can make our school meet its mission, to provide an exceptional educational experience to each of our students. Thank you, Principal | Lisa Newlyn

HOW ARE STUDENTS AT THIS SCHOOL PERFORMING COMPARED TO THOSE AT OTHER SCHOOLS?
The overall state rating is intended to summarize this school's particular successes and challenges. It is based on a combination of up to five factors. Three of these factors come from standardized test scores in reading and math: student achievement, student growth, and the growth of underserved subgroups. Please be aware that this rating is based mainly on highstakes testing and accordingly, represents a limited view of student performance. Other aspects of this report card are designed to put this rating in the proper context. Compared to all schools statewide in 201314, this school is rated as Level 5.
Compared to elementary schools with similar student demographics in 201314, this school’s rating is above average.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Community Members, This year the staff is going to be focusing on using common language across the content areas in order to assist our students in being more successful. Staff members from different content areas will be sharing academic language as well as assignment expectations that they use in their instruction so that students are hearing common themes throughout the day. Staff members will also be discussing expectations regarding late work which will be a big plus for all of our students. Speaking of using a common language, we are also going to be working this year to implement common behavioral expectations for the students. We understand that it is very frustrating for students, and the adults, when each teacher’s expectations are a little different from the teacher in the previous class. Our goal is to create a system that looks similar in each class with similar expectations but allows each classroom to maintain its
personal identity. As you can see, we are really working at creating a consistent system for everyone. One exciting addition to our schedule this year is that we are incorporating Study Skills classes in to our student day. These classes will be a tremendous support for those students who need an extra boost in assignment completion and then getting it turned in. When you look at overall data for our school, we have a very high number of students that pass the standardized tests but we also have a very high number of students who get low grades, meaning Ds and Fs. Our goal is to maintain the test scores while improving the grades Thank you, Principal | John Ferraro

Compared to middle schools with similar student demographics in 201314, this school‘s rating is above average.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Community Members,
The annual report card issued by the Oregon Department of Education offers a useful but incomplete picture of our school. It describes the diversity of our student body, our enrolment trend and our average class size. It also attempts to show how students are performing in comparison to other schools and whether our students are making sufficient progress over time. Finally, the report card describes the academic program at our school. The state uses this report to focus on its supports for schools and also to inform education policy. We use it as a guide for understanding our school’s strengths, and also the areas we need to improve. Lincoln High School has consistently achieved the highest ratings in the areas of overall student academic achievement, attendance and student graduation rates. However, according to ODE Lincoln has experienced less success in academic growth rates. These growth rates purport to compare our students’ improvement in test scores with other similar students throughout the state. While our staff and administrators are concerned about this comparison data, it is not our focus or priority to apply resources to maximizing standardized test score improvement when the majority of our students already meet or exceed state benchmarks. Instead, our focus is on closing the academic achievement gap, supporting all students in meeting their educational goals and developing skills for
their future as lifelong learners. Specifically we help students to discover their passions, support them to build skills and gain confidence, and work collaboratively with our families and community to provide ways for our learners to apply newly developed skills and passions to the world around them creating meaningful purpose in their lives. In addition, while Lincoln considers itself to be a model school for academic achievement throughout our school district and the state of Oregon, it is concerned that ODE’s narrow selection of schools with “similar demographics” misrepresents our school’s level of achievement. Our research shows that a significant number of these schools have very little in common with Lincoln in terms of size, location and other critical factors that should be used when compiling comparative ratings. Our school engages in a variety of authentic assessment practices that enable us to identify ways to better serve our students. In many cases, these assessments provide more specific and actionable information than the Oregon Report Card as we work hard to achieve our school improvement goals. Thank you, Principal | Peyton Chapman
