City Quotes
“Love and cities are always inextricably entwined. There's no restaurant or corner store or run-down dive in any city that doesn't double as a monument for a lost love.I think that's why we always stop and stare whenever we come across a girl crying in public. We sense the imprint of a memory being pressed onto the sidewalk, onto the building contours, onto the names of the streets.”

February 2018: Erika’s Podcast and Book Picks Podcast-OnBeing with Krista Tippett and Brene Brown Strong Back,Soft Front, Wild Heart I have been a Krista Tippet podcast listener for years and find her podcast personally revolutionary. This interview stopped me in my tracks as far as making connections in my own life and business. This podcast centers around the subject of belonging. I realized without hesitation that I feel that I BELONG in my community. The moment I moved to the Pearl I felt that way. This sense of connection has energized me and for that I am grateful. Find it on any podcast app or online at www.onbeing.org
The Creative Habit-Learn It and Use It for Life Twyla Tharp I am convinced that I can become more creative if I follow Ms.Tharps suggestions. I absolutely loved this book. Her use of the concept of the “spine “or (what I would call my mission) of your project really resonated with me. This can apply to any industry and help you stay on task. I read from this book monthly as it helps me gain focus and remember to stay creative for my clients. My advice is to give it a try even if you think you are not a creative person or math oriented. I learned that connecting ideas is a form of creativity. You can purchase it online or at Powell's Books!
Crushing It! Gary Vaynerchuk This book was such a pleasant surprise and many people may be shocked that I am recommending it. I am known for being into more organic connection. (I am sending you a mailer). The reality of business today is we need to have a digital presence. The key is to do it in a way that is real connection rather that simply promoting. If you want to learn about social media and what is really going on from a master, this is the book for you! It is about connection and telling a story, not just posting. Find the book online or at Powell's. Gary also has awesome videos online. He tends to swear but it gets your attention!

New Plan for NW 13th Ave by Rethink Streets A group of six Portland State Masters of Urban and Regional Planning students have collaborated with the Pearl District Neighborhood Association to envision a new concept for NW 13th Avenue. The group released its findings in June and the report is an impressive and detailed vision of what the street could be in the next 5 to 10 years. NW 13th is a challenging project due to the lack of sidewalks, the presence historical buildings, the variety of uses of the properties and congestion of cars, bikes and pedestrians. The Rethink Streets statement takes all of this into consideration and outlines the sections of the street. They consider the attributes and drawbacks seen by the community and business owners in the area as well as those trained in urban design. The recommendation is to refocus on the pedestrian or human element and to foster a feeling of connectivity and inclusivity to both the visitors and the residents of the neighborhood. The goals of the vision: 1. Vibrancy 2. Inclusivity 3. Community 4. Comfort The process of project: 1. Define goals 2. Existing conditions 3. Community outreach 4. Recommend strategies & actions Sites with report and more info: pearldistrict.org rethinkstreets.com Let me know if you would like me to email you a copy of the report.
