LEGENDSOURHONOURING
10 | North Coast VisitorÕs Guide 2022 - 2023
Fallen Zulu warriors, epic battles, colonial settlers and indentured labourers are just the beginning of the North Coast’s tumultuous history. Our people will forever honour the legends who have made the North Coast the cultural haven it is today
THE MIGHTY KING SHAKA King Shaka, one of the greatest military leaders, founded the town of KwaDukuza almost 200 years ago and became the well-respected ruler of the land. Uniting the diverse Zulu nation was one of King Shaka’s greatest triumphs. King Shaka was killed by his brothers on 24 September 1828, now commemorated each year in KwaDukuza as King Shaka Day. The King Shaka Visitors Centre in KwaDukuza serves as a memorial and was erected on the site of King Shaka’s grave in 1932. Beside the memorial is the rock that is believed to have been the one he sat on when he was assassinated.
MAHATMA GANDHI Gandhi was instrumental in the struggle against the apartheid regime, and proclaimed that the destiny of the Indian community living on the North Coast was intertwined with the struggle of the oppressed Zulu people. Together, the Zulu and Indian population fought against the apartheid government.
Born in Groutville and growing up on a mission station near KwaDukuza, Chief Albert Luthuli was given the title of Chief in 1935, succeeding his late uncle. Luthuli became president of the African National Congress in 1952 and drew on his Christian faith and his status as an African chief to oppose the unjust apartheid system by identifying with and speaking on behalf of South Africans. His heroism was recognised internationally when – in 1961 – he became the first African Nobel Peace Prize winner.
THE ANGLO-ZULU WAR
CHIEF ALBERT LUTHULI
11 | North Coast VisitorÕs Guide 2022 - 2023
THE WAR OF THE PRINCES
King Cetshwayo won the battle and ruled over the Zulu people only to fight another war, this time defending his people against the British settlers in 1879. Two battles of the Anglo-Zulu War were fought on the North Coast including the battle of Gingindlovu on 2 April 1879, when the British Army used machine guns for the first time in history. The British forces won the war and took over the land for farming sugarcane – which led to Indian people being brought in as indentured labourers to work the fields.
King Shaka’s death sparked a violent battle for the Zulu throne that lasted several decades. The battle between King Shaka’s nephews plunged the Zulu Kingdom into civil war that resulted in the death of 6 000 warriors, the highest fatalities of any battle in South Africa. The site of the most brutal battle, eNdondakusuka, now exists peacefully on the banks of the Tugela River beneath waving fields of sugarcane.
