y the time you read this 2021 will be but a few weeks within our grasp, and I guess like me, you’ll be happy to see the back of 2020. There’s no doubt about it, the initial few months of lockdown were tough on so many different levels, but South Africans have always had the ability to adapt, grow, change and innovate to overcome obstacles. It’s one of our strengths. Needless to say, we have all learnt from the Covid pandemic. We have all come to accept the “new normal”, whether it be at home, in the workplace, in a shopping centre or socialising. Face masks have become our new fashion accessory, and our hands are constantly germ free. According to The Washington Post, South Africa’s near-total lack of flu season this year stands out as a rare positive effect of Covid. Which goes to show, there is benefit in wearing face masks and sanitising hands. Since lockdown we’ve also learnt to enjoy life a lot more – especially the little things like the abundance of birds and butterflies in the garden, the smell of the sea and views of the ocean as you walk along the promenade. We have renewed gratitude for our families, friends and community, and considering how some local businesses have re-invented themselves to survive the tough economic times we’re living
LEFT: Captivated and totally excited, Milani and Zoey were all smiles as they posed for photographs. BOTTOM: A lot of food … and a lot of fun. From left: Sally Chance, Brendon Newport, Lynda Kapsimalis, Phillida Ellis, Lorna King and Ant Ellis.
Cheers to 2021 who take delight in turning their home “into a festive wonderland” every year, we also got involved with the festive holiday food shoot, sampling all sorts of goodies which are really worth adding to your festive menu. No festive issue would be complete without a gift
guide, but this year we have something special. ALL the gifts on our pages can be won by YOU. Simply scan the QR code on the feature, fill out your details and you will be entered into a draw to win one of our gifts. It’s that easy – and there are gifts worth R20 000 up for grabs. To all our advertisers – new and old – a big thank you for your support this year. We couldn’t have got through it without you. As the year draws to a close, let’s celebrate and be thankful we have survived. Enjoy this issue as you celebrate the holiday season responsibly, and have good thoughts about 2021. Until next year, be safe.

Le Petit Chef has returned to the sanitised tabletops of the luxurious Beverley Hills Hotel to continue the journey of Marco Polo designed from his experiences along the Silk Route of Asia. Become fully immersed in a 3D projected extravaganza that allows you to travel through the big, exciting and flavourful world of the intrepid explorer Marco Polo, albeit with masks and temperature checks, no border controls or quarantine will be necessary! or Ayanda Njilo, Christmas was always the brightest star of the year, her mom made sure of that. “I come from humble beginnings and a small family, but no matter how little money we had, we dressed up. My mom adores clothes, and so do I. I had a different outfit for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Dressing up was when I came into my own.” Today, life is quite different for Ayanda, but that love of dressing up hasn’t waned one bit. To her own love, she can now add the joy of dressing up her two little daughters, Milani and Zoey, who clearly inherited their mom’s love of theatre and glam. Even husband Phumlani stepped out and dressed for success. Ayanda was born, raised and studied law in Pietermaritzburg. She studied law because, she says, coming from a humble background, education was something her parents deemed very important. She then did her articles and another three » LEFT: Ayanda, Phumlani, Zoey and Milani standing at the bottom of their staircase decorated with garlands, lights and berries. years with Africa’s largest law firm, Edward Nathan Sonnenberg (ENS). Biggest problem for Ayanda was the dress code there. She laughs, “I don’t know what I expected when I walked into ENS on that first day, but it wasn’t a dark corporate look where everyone looked the same. It was at that moment that I knew this would not be the world for me. I had worked hard to get here, and, frankly, I wanted to look pretty – not join a profession with a dress code.” Ayanda and Phumlani run a funeral business, Induduzo Bespoke Funerals. Ayanda turned her back on law completely, and while Phumlani explores other entrepreneurial interests, she has created something truly unique at Induduzo. She’s moved funerals up
a notch by customising them, and is very involved in marketing the brand. She explained, “We’ve realised the power of social media. Funerals are generally associated with dark and sombre thoughts, but we’ve changed the face of the industry. We market the experience of our clients being a part of Induduzo. “We market to both the low and high LSM. For the low sector, we market through promotions, run competitions with prizes – people rush to join in or sign up to Induduzo. We’ve found that our clients love being part of our brand because of the experience we provide, and we go out of our way to treat them like gold. Social media has been a huge platform on »

which we market ourselves.” Ayanda’s desire to make occasions special, makes her the perfect person to manage bespoke funerals: “Our bespoke funerals are quite the event. I usually attend the first consultation with the client, and assist them to choose the right casket. I work with the family to design a funeral that reflects the personality of their loved one.” Ayanda says they usually only have three or four days to plan the funeral, meaning it’s a pressurised situation. The clients of Induduzo Bespoke Funerals are also high end and countrywide: “We have a responsibility to leave families with beautiful, lasting memories, and we do that through the service we provide.” They’ve clearly achieved that, for she has clients who’ve
“booked” their funerals ahead of time – they’ve specified to their families the precise kind of Induduzo funeral they want. Social media has played a big role in building the business, but Ayanda has other dreams too. She’s launched herself as a brand on social media. When Induduzo reaches the point of running smoothly without her, Ayanda Njilo will be the clothing label you’ll have to have. She laughs, “My love of clothes runs very deep. I want to see people dressed in Ayanda Njilo wear.” For Ayanda and the family, dressing up and strutting their stuff for Christmas represents the start of the festive season. he world is evolving every day. It is no longer about survival of the fittest but survival of the most agile. We are in the process of a major shift that is challenging us to rethink our old ways and envision a future that is better than we had ever imagined. We are all inherently creative beings who are designed to make, fix, originate and create. While innovation makes what we do timeless, compassion and empathy make what we do desirable. Empathy. What the world needs more of. What good copywriters have in order to communicate in a way that resonates with others. It is in this deep understanding of ourselves and the world around us that connections are made. English writer E.M. Forster says it best: Only Connect! When we connect words with emotion, we see true human love. We learn to walk in someone else’s shoes and truly walk. Sometimes even run. At its core, copywriting is about creativity, analytical thinking, empathy and effective communication. These hallmark attributes are a few of the vital skills needed for the future of work. But it is more than just the words. Good copy sells ideas. Great copy changes perspectives and behaviour. The first step to becoming a

good copywriter is practising empathy. If you can do that, you are halfway there to changing the way the world thinks. A skill that holds great power and value, not only for prospective employers but for generations to come. Your creativity, with a little bit of empathy, can solve any problem you are faced with. And there you have it, a career (that can pay good money) based on two of the most important things in this world: people and passion. So how do you know that copywriting is for you? Well,
professions and jobs appear and disappear with time, we should aim to make ourselves indispensable. As copywriters, imagination and empathy are the superpowers that enable us to change the world. From screenwriting, advertising and social media content creation to freelancing and being your own boss, being a copywriter
from it. Isn’t that the ideal future aspiration? Maybe writing isn’t just what you do, it’s who you are. And maybe, you should give yourself (or your child) the chance to be just that. Sometimes accidents are a redirection into something you are destined to do, and this was one of those instances,” says Zanele Biyela, third year IIE-Vega copywriting student. The World Economic Forum has predicted that by 2030, over one billion people need to be reskilled. While this may not be surprising, as

PHILLIDA’S KICK-ASS
PORTUGUESE MUSSELS VINAIGRETTE
Light, bright and perfect for a sweltering Durban day. For best results, wash down with enormous, ice-cold beer shandies. WHAT YOU NEED 24-30 medium mussels * 1/2 cup olive oil * 3 Tbsp red wine vinegar * 1 tsp capers, chopped * 1 Tbsp onion, minced * 1 Tbsp pimento or red pepper, minced * 1 Tbsp flat leaf parsley, minced * salt and pepper * 1 thick slice lemon TO MAKE In a bowl whisk together oil and vinegar. Add capers, onion, pimento, parsley, salt and pepper. Leave aside to combine flavours well. Pour about a cup of water into a large frying pan, add lemon slice. When hot, but not boiling, add mussels and bring to the boil. Remove and cool. When cool, remove the mussel meat from the shells and mix into vinaigrette. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Clean mussel shells and place in a bag in fridge overnight. To serve, return the mussel meat to the shells and pour over a little vinaigrette, making sure each mussel gets some of the minced onion mix. Serve at room temperature with crusty bread – essential for soaking up remaining dressing.

APPLE AND FENNEL
SPICED GAZPACHO WITH GRILLED PECORINO TOASTIES
This is one of my versions of a salad we loved in New York City. Crisp, fresh and summery, it’s a winner every time. Ranch is a USA staple, and this cheat’s recipe comes close to the real thing that’s usually made with buttermilk.
I’m not really a fan of cold soups, but this is the absolute bomb. It’s refreshing and delicious, and a great way to kick off a festive feast.
SALAD WITH BLUE CHEESE, CANDIED NUTS AND RANCH DRESSING
WHAT YOU NEED Salad: 2 apples, cored and sliced thin * 1/2 a red onion, sliced thin * 1 fennel bulb, topped and tailed and sliced thin * mixed salad leaves of lettuce, spinach and cress * 1 cup walnuts * 1/2 cup brown sugar * 100g Blue cheese (any mature soft cheese or even feta will work great) * fennel fronds Ranch Dressing: 1 cup mayonnaise * 1/2 cup sour cream * 1/2 tsp chives, fresh chopped or dried * 1/2 tsp parsley, fresh chopped or dried * 1/2 tsp dried dill *1 garlic clove, minced * 1/2 tsp onion powder * 1 tsp vinegar * a drop each of Tabasco and Worcestershire Sauce * pinch each of salt and ground black pepper TO MAKE Salad: Prepare the candied nuts. In a pan add sugar and stir over high heat until melted. Add nuts, stir quickly to coat. Spread on a non-stick baking mat or heavily greased wax paper sheet and allow to cool. Don’t touch! Spread a generous layer of washed lettuce leaves in your bowl or platter. Layer with apple, fennel and red onion. Bash the nuts a bit and sprinkle over salad, with dots of Blue cheese. Decorate with fennel fronds and serve with Ranch Dressing. Ranch Dressing: Add all ingredients to a blender, mix thoroughly.
WHAT YOU NEED 5 slices white bread * 1 garlic clove, minced * 80ml olive oil * 60ml red wine vinegar * 2 fresh tomatoes, chopped * 1 tin whole Italian tomatoes * 250g cucumber, peeled, deseeded and chopped * 200g red pepper, chopped * 1 red onion, chopped * 80ml orange juice * fresh parsley * ice-cubes (traditional, optional) * sliced baguette * Pecorino cheese TO MAKE Trim the bread and tear the insides into pieces. In a bowl combine bread, garlic, oil and vinegar, stand for half an hour. Blend the bread mixture with tomatoes, cucumber, red pepper, onion and orange juice until smooth. If you prefer a smoother gazpacho, strain. Cover and refrigerate. To serve, top with a drizzle of olive oil, diced fresh cucumber and chopped parsley. Top your baguette slices with Pecorino and grill until melted and golden.

CHEF P’S MOROCCAN BUTTERNUT For this killer vegetarian main, choose butternuts with a nice big “bowl”. One butternut serves two. WHAT YOU NEED 2 butternuts * 125g couscous * sprinkle of dried chilli flakes * 1/2 cup pistachio nuts, plus extra for garnish * 6-8 soft eating dried apricots, coarsely chopped * 6 Medjool dates, coarsely chopped * 1/2 cup olives, coarsely chopped (black or green are both great) * 1/2 cup slivered almonds * squeeze of lemon juice * salt and pepper * 1/2 cup pomegranate rubies * good bunch of fresh coriander, chopped TO MAKE Cook couscous according to packet instructions, adding chilli flakes to the mix. Dry roast the pistachio nuts, set aside to cool. When the couscous is done, add the dried apricots, dates, olives, 2 heaped tablespoons of chopped coriander, pistachio nuts, almonds and lemon juice. Fork through and leave to stand on a warm surface. Season to taste. Roast butternuts whole at 180°C, skins on. When almost cooked remove from heat and cut off tops. Scoop out seeds leaving a bowl for filling. Fill with couscous mixture. Warm in the oven at 180°C to heat through before serving. Serve sprinkled with extra pistachios, pomegranate rubies and coriander leaves.

ANT’S CIDER AND CRANBERRY GLAZED GAMMON WITH STONE FRUIT Usually a honey or apricot jam glaze, but this is better. WHAT YOU NEED Gammon: 2kg boneless gammon * 2 onions, quartered * 2 carrots, roughly cut into 3cm chunks * 2 celery stalks, roughly cut into 3cm chunks * 3 bay-leaves * 1012 black peppercorns * 8-10 cloves Glaze: 300ml apple cider * 100ml cranberry sauce Fruit: nectarines, stoned and halved * whole cherries TO MAKE Glaze: In a saucepan, add cider and cranberry sauce and bring to the boil. Reduce to a syrup and cool. Gammon: Place gammon in a pot. Cover with room temperature water, bring to boil over a high heat, boil for 5 minutes. Drain, add fresh water and remaining ingredients. Boil. Reduce heat, cover with lid and simmer for 20 minutes per 500g, turning the gammon over halfway. Once cooked, remove from water, set aside to cool. Preheat oven to 200°C. Line a roasting tin with foil. Using a small, sharp knife, remove rind from gammon, leaving as much of the fat intact as possible. Place gammon in roasting tin, brush liberally with glaze. Roast in oven for 10 minutes, then take out and brush again with glaze. Roast for a further 15-20 minutes, brushing with left-over glaze halfway through cooking time, until fat is glossy and golden. Remove from oven, set aside for 15 minutes before carving. Serve with fruit, gravy and mustard. Fruit: Brush gammon juices on to a hot skillet. Add fruit directly into skillet until fruit softens slightly and caramelises.

EASY CHICKEN, CHORIZO AND OLIVE TRAY BAKE It’s hot. You’re knackered. Make this super easy, Spanishstyle one-tray wonder that’ll satisfy everyone and keep your drinking arm free. WHAT YOU NEED 1-1,5kg chicken thighs and drumsticks, bone-in and skin on * olive oil * 1 onion, cut into eighths * 150g chorizo, sliced * 150g green olives, pitted and halved * 1 bulb garlic, halved and loose skin removed * 2 lemons, halved * 1/2 tsp dried oregano * 1/2 tsp dried thyme * salt and pepper * 2 cups chicken stock TO MAKE Preheat oven to 200°C. Add a good glug of oil to a roasting tray. Add onion then chicken, then fill the gaps with chorizo slices and olives, and nestle in the lemon halves and garlic bulb. Season with salt and pepper, sprinkle with herbs and pour in the stock until the chicken is just over half-submerged. Cook for 10 minutes, then reduce heat to 180°C. Cook for a further 60-70 minutes or until chicken is tender throughout. Serve with rice or mashed potatoes.
BRUSSELS SPROUTS WITH LEMON, CHILLI AND PROSCIUTTO Brussels sprouts are a Christmas tradition and done right, they are nuggets of goodness. Try this kickin’ East Coast twist on the old boiled-to-death ones. WHAT YOU NEED 250g Brussels sprouts * 2 Tbsp olive oil * 20g butter * juice of half a lemon * 1 red chilli, finely chopped * salt and pepper * 6 slices prosciutto, fried until crispy and chopped (streaky bacon is fine) TO MAKE Slice off the bottom of the sprouts and cut a cross in the base, a few millimetres deep. Blanch in boiling salted water for 3 minutes, drain and cool. When cool, cut into halves. Heat a pan, add oil and butter until melted, then add sprouts and fry for 6-8 minutes, tossing often. Add chilli and lemon juice, cook until tender and golden. Season to taste. To serve, top with crispy prosciutto and an extra squeeze of lemon juice.

imes are tough in real estate. The Covid-19 economic hang-over, poor productivity due to agents working in isolation from home and antiquated processes have seen many companies downsize or even shut their doors. But Prop247, headed by group CEO, Brett van Laun, has clocked up record months in troubled times and even trebled his staff count by hiring when others were retrenching. The company has a network of strategically placed branches extending from Ballito and uMhlanga to Morningside, and not only services exclusive residential estates, but also specialises in industrial, retail and commercial property. In addition, it manages a large residential portfolio and one of the largest holiday letting divisions in KZN. Brett believes it is important for a real estate company to move with the times and to build a vibrant team where agents not only have in-depth knowledge of the property market, but set high standards when it comes to professionalism and customer service. A passionate entrepreneur, he identifies key facets of his business that set his company apart – technology, understanding the dynamics of online marketing, and diversification just for starters. “I’ve been there, done that and been personally invested in all facets of this business,” he explains, adding that he knows the industry from the

perspective of both the investor and the broker. He understands the marketing and the numbers and trains his agents to achieve the best results for the client. With a strong marketing
We are a one-stop shop offering a solution to all needs” background, Brett started out with a web development company 23 years ago. “We really struggled and almost closed. Others couldn’t see
what I could but, eventually, it took off,” he recalls. As things improved, he began investing in property, buying and renovating and reselling homes and, ultimately, developing a holiday rental business. By January 2005, he had bought a property in Windermere Road and moved his IT and marketing business there and rented out the remainder of the property. As he continued to invest in, renovate and sell properties as well as dabble in sheriff’s auctions, he also began butting heads with poor service delivery and decided to create his own real estate business.
w w w . t h e r i d g e o n l i n e . c o . z a
His strong IT-based approach to marketing has set the company apart, he believes. Understanding how algorithms work and what needs to be done to keep the properties he is marketing at the top of online listings has proved a major plus. This not only applies to property portals but also to marketing of properties via social media. “Generally, we are a younger agency that has evolved with the industry. We believe in efficiency and good service but to do that you need technology. That’s why we are essentially a technologybased business providing a one stop solution,” he explains.
He is not shy to use the very best and most sophisticated technology to market a property – drones, Matter Port cameras and videos with stabilisers to provide a high quality virtual walk-through – because, for both clients and agents, time is money, and technology creates efficiency. “The bottom line is, we are a one-stop shop offering a solution to all needs. Often, our clients need more than one of our services. There’s a lot of cross pollination,” he says. Regarding holiday rentals, efficiencies that protect both landlords and guests have been built into the business. Prop247 offers the flexibility of both letting and managing its portfolio of over 500 properties. With listings on the high traffic portals and a team dedicated to the highest services level, investors enjoy excellent returns on their investments. With stunning self-catering homes independently managed on the KZN North Coast, the team is well equipped to offer a memorable experience to our valuable clients. A similar approach is taken to residential letting. Again, technology comes to the fore with a bespoke software package that automatically manages rental collection, utility and maintenance billing. Inspectors handle entry and exit inspections as well as
spot checks for the duration of a lease, and seamless management of maintenance by a dedicated team ensures efficient and quick repairs. Prop247 is accredited in most of the major estates like The Pearls of uMhlanga, Mount Edgecombe Estate, Sibaya, Illala, Izinga, Simbithi and Zimbali, to name but a few. The commercial division is well-established, offering expert knowledge, and has been experiencing a real growth spurt over the past few months, giving confidence even in a difficult market. But, it is the sales side of the real estate business that is strongest right now, with low interest rates making ownership cheaper than renting, and owners who commute to Gauteng to work also driving this end of the market. All in all, he believes that, despite the unique challenges of the time, there are opportunities aplenty for companies like Prop247 that are well positioned to identify them and evolve with the needs of their clients. “I invest in people,” he says of the team of managers, support staff and experienced agents he has built up. Overall, Brett believes Prop247 is well equipped to look after its clients’ investments on every level. FOR MORE INFO 031 942 7486; www.prop247.co.za

hristmas can be a stressful time for many, with lastminute scrambling through the stores for gifts. Take time this year to plan and beautifully present gifts that focus on the person; using their favourite colour, tastes or likes as a theme. A thoughtful gift infused with happiness is guaranteed to be appreciated and spoken about for years to come – so be the favourite gran, aunt, friend, or sister by “wowing” your family and friends with a one-of-a-kind gift. Add handwritten personal messages to each item, explaining why you chose that item, or insert quirky humour to elevate a simple item. Focus less on what the value is, but rather the thought and effort you have put into creating a unique gift experience. On behalf of Talloula, put together for their fabulous annual Christmas showcase, Venessa Matthews has created eight wonderfully unique and inspiring ideas: Create a “braai” hamper filled with eco firelighter balls in a jar, a quirky “match” lighter and other

with a home-made Christmas decoration and tag. Alternatively trace a circle using a side plate to “cut out” store branding from packaging to create a window into the contents of your gift. Support your street vendor by purchasing a homemade basket to make a unique stationery gift basket perfect for any stationery lover’s desk. Colour co-ordinate the contents, completing the look with homemade tassels. Recycled egg cartons make the best packaging for a creative gift from the garden. Propagate rock roses, and this gift will cost you only the ribbon and tag. Other fun ideas to fill: homemade bath bombs; mini muffins; candy/chocolates; jewellery; folded money. »

Coloured glass jars from Consol Glass not only look great, but “hide” contents. Gift swimming trunks or a costume in a blue glass jar, adding dimension by gluing a bendy toy to the lid. Use a fun summer image to create a unique and personalised gift tag
that hints to the theme of the gift. Repurpose gift bags from your shopping spree this Christmas. Many stores use great quality gift bags to package your purchases in. Hide store branding with a strip of patterned paper or gift wrap, and finish off

Merry Fishmas … Jars make the most wonderful gift vessels. Remove packaging from items purchased and fill a jar. Fishing hooks can be put into a smaller jar, lining the bottom of your jar with tissue paper or paper shreds. Attach a homemade stick fishing rod and fish tag to the outside of your jar using washi tape. Spray paint the jar lid blue to match the colour theme of your gift. A great way to present a “fishing shop” voucher too. Impress the baker in the family with a large jar filled with cupcake baking goodies. Decorate the jar with clear dot stickers, paint the handle of an inexpensive wooden spoon to match, and add a large tag with a cupcake recipe. Colour co-ordinate for a successful and useful gift. Theme a gift for a car lover with a car wash hamper. Using a pineapple theme, purchase yellow and green car wash items and present in a handy storage basket. Contents include pineapple key ring, sponge, cleaning cloths, spray bottle, chamois (remove sticker from packaging), pineapple car freshener and shopping bag, and petrol slip folder.

SHOT TWO YOUNG DURBAN NORTH BOYS HAVE NURTURED THEIR LOVE FOR WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY AND RECEIVED INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION BEYOND THEIR WILDEST DREAMS, WRITES LEE CURRIE
A
s a young couple, Enid and Shawn Meaker fell in love with the bush, soon followed by a passion for capturing nature and wildlife, honing their photographic skills as they explored reserves, locally and further into Africa. Later, when their sons Skye and Branson were born, they took them along, subject to a few provisos. “It’s important to be realistic when taking young children into remote areas with wild animals,” stresses Enid. “We taught our boys how to behave around the animals while driving in open vehicles and found they were receptive, responsible and willing to learn. We kept them busy by handing them our old cameras and encouraging them to play around with settings and composition. Back then we were unaware of the beautiful journey that would start unfolding for our family thanks to photography and our passion for the bush.” During school holidays the Meakers, who live in Durban North, continued to

visit game reserves throughout Africa. “The boys worked on their own photographic skills encouraged by Greg Du Toit, international wildlife photographer, while we were on one of his photo safaris. He pointed out that the boys really did have a talent for photography,” recalls Enid. Now 18 and 15 respectively, the brothers have won recognition in several international nature photography competitions. Their parents are undeniably proud of their success but when asked how many awards they’ve won, Enid says they don’t keep a list, they’re just happy to be internationally recognised. “Exposing the beauty of the natural

world, particularly our African wildlife, and inspiring people to care and why we must protect it is what we all strive to do, and the competitions provide the boys with a platform to do this.” The brothers, however, do have their highlights. For Skye it was a special bonding with a leopard in Mashatu Game Reserve in Botswana. The leopard is nicknamed Limpy due to a slight limp in her hind left leg after falling from a tree. “Around the same time I had gone through two knee operations. From when she was still a cub, Limpy and I have grown up alongside one another. It meant the world to me that

finalist in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition in 2019. The photo was chosen to decorate one of the reception rooms in 10 Downing Street. At the time of going to press, Branson was in Grade 9 and Skye had just finished his matric exams. Fitting in school work with their photography must no doubt present its challenges. “Time management and balance in life is vitally important and something we have sorely missed this year. It’s a matter of trying to catch up as best as they can,” Enid agrees. Skye will be studying at Tukkies (University of Pretoria) towards a BCom Degree – and (of course!) will continue with his photography. “I believe it is vital for us to connect with wildlife in some shape or form. Humans were made to

be surrounded by nature but are finding it harder and harder to take the time to connect. Spending a week watching elephants or hearing a fish eagle in the distance heals you and is often the break we need before returning to the busyness of our lives. I hope I convey these feelings in my images so that people can appreciate the beauty of nature.” No doubt the family have photographed myriad species of animals over the years. Enid says they appreciate all wildlife, large and small. “Nature is all connected. Without the small animals and insects the larger species won’t thrive. This is our mindset going out on game drives, to enjoy and be grateful for all sightings as nothing is guaranteed in the bush.” And their favourite animals? Enid

For dad Shawn it’s wild dogs because they’re rare, beautiful and highly efficient. Skye loves leopards, and for Branson it’s hyenas as they are the most interesting. The family have yet to photograph a pangolin which is on their wildlife bucket list. Watch this space.

EMBRACE
advancing age
GETTING OLDER HAPPENS, WHETHER WE LIKE IT OR NOT. BUT INSTEAD OF FEARING OLD AGE, SAYS LES ABERCROMBIE, EMBRACE IT
H
ave you ever considered that your greatest achievement in life has been growing older? When looking back over your 60, 70 or even 80 years most of you can truthfully say, “Wow, that was a hell of a ride.” Everyone has ups and downs in life, good and bad things happen and we all have secrets and regrets. But instead of wallowing in self-pity it’s so much better – as you grow older – to dump your baggage and look to the future with joy and anticipation. You may be wrinkly, wider and not quite as agile as before, but don’t let that stop you from having fun and living your best life. Age is simply a number and the beauty about ageing is that the older you get the more free you are to do and say what you
48
please. Don’t fear advancing years but rather embrace them. Keep your friends close and contact them often. Talk to small children and interact with teenagers. Gatecrash the occasional 40-something party and discover how quickly the “generation gap” with the almost middle-aged is shrinking. Talk to animals and stroke dogs and cats. Erect a bird feeder in the garden and delight in local birdlife. Start taking the slower, more scenic route through life by making the small things matter. It’s good for the soul. Probably the greatest fear about ageing is financial. “Are my savings enough?” “How long am I going to live – will they stretch that far?” There are the lucky few who don’t have these concerns, but they are in the minority. The rest of us have to cut our
cloth to fit our coat. The first thing to do is to consult a trusted financial advisor. Secondly, make sure you are debt-free before you retire. Thirdly, cut down and cut back to ensure you live within your means and don’t accrue new debt. Don’t get rid of your medical aid. Rather adjust it to a more affordable level and then, if you can, add Gap Cover. And lastly, do not dig into your capital without sound financial advice – that capital is all you’ve got. Retirement always comes as a bit of a shock, even to those who have been dreaming about it for years. To minimise the jolt, plan and prepare for the change in lifestyle and circumstances. As previously suggested, find a part-time job or a hobby to keep your brain agile and exercise – even a 30-minute daily walk – to keep your body fit and supple. Never think of yourself as “old” because then you will be. Be sure to behave like a “seenager” as often as possible – it will keep your mind young and drive your children crazy! I often think of the singer, Cher, who, when some guy asked her, “Don’t you think you’re too old to sing rock ’n roll?” replied, “You’d better check with Mick Jagger.” Enjoy the forthcoming holiday season.
Men (and women) do not quit playing because they grow old – they grow old because they quit playing – Oliver Wendell Many of us will be missing family this year due to international travel restrictions, but this too will pass. Instead of letting the situation get you down, share this time with friends, speak about the future and new plans. There is an Irish saying: You’re not as young as you used to be. But you are not as old as you’re going to be. So live every second of every minute of your life with joy.

LEE CURRIE CHATS TO TWO YOUNG MOTHERS WHO HAVE TURNED THEIR TRAVEL ADVENTURES INTO PERSONALISED CHILDREN’S BOOKS – ALL IN THE NAME OF ENCOURAGING READING AND OPENING LITTLE PEOPLE’S EYES TO THE WORLD

F
ortunately, despite our advanced digital age, printed books have not yet lost their appeal. Indeed, for many children the sight and feel (and smell) of a brand-new book still generates pleasant anticipation, if not excitement – and particularly if the child is the lead character in the story. With this concept in mind, friends Isabelle Backx and Shannon Vermaak took the opportunity during lockdown to start their own personalised children’s book publishing business. The idea was born when Shannon began illustrating a personalised book for her four-year-old twins. Isabelle – who has a Master’s Degree in Business Economics – was immediately taken by the idea: “At the time I was looking for something

different to do and saw this as a business opportunity. “We started on our first book during the lockdown period early in 2020 when people were obliged to stay at home. Many of us had previously taken the freedom of travel for granted and Shannon and I had many discussions about the places we had seen and those we still wanted to explore. We thought, why not bring the world to children through our books?” Each book is personalised, where the name of the young “protagonist” and his or her

Ballito boys win
BIG
A SHORT FILM ENTITLED AMANZI OLWANDE – WHICH MEANS OCEAN WATER – MADE BY A CREW AND CAST FROM BALLITO – HAS WON THE JUDGES’ CHOICE AWARD IN THE WORLD’S LARGEST SHORT FILM COMPETITION, MY RØDE REEL 2020, WRITES SHIRLEY LE GUERN

or Timothy Hay, who both wrote and directed the short film, and his production company Hellmot Productions, news of the win came in the middle of the night due to the time difference between South Africa and Australia where the competition sponsor is based. But it was a dream come true. “I had always wanted to enter this competition because it is an international competition with awesome prizes. It is not just a statue that you win at the end of the day, but also equipment and 200 000 Australian dollars. So, I thought we’d take a chance. It was a bit of a gamble but I loved the story, the content and the opportunity to film in the Transkei where it is easy to make every image amazing because it is such a beautiful place,” he says. The film tells the heart-rending true story of how teenage surfer Avuyile “Avo” Ndamase lost his 15-year-old brother, Zama, during a shark attack while the two were catching waves off Port St Johns. The story was due to be included in a documentary on which Timothy was working. When that fell through, Timothy

says he couldn’t forget the story and wrote a short script which he discussed with the now 26-year-old Avo Ndamase over coffee. It takes the tragedy one step further and tells how Avo continues to surf to connect with his lost sibling. Avo played himself as an adult and acted as an assistant on the set while young Salt Rock surfers, Sanele Mthethwa and Mpathi Ndlovu, played the parts of the 15- and

a bonfire. The second day was a full day of filming and then, on the last day, we woke up early to get awesome sunrise shots to show the beauty of the Transkei. In the end, it was just a day and a half’s filming. It didn’t take long to put together as we had shot for the edits and knew exactly where everything was going to go,” he says. The six-man team also had to capture a second film within a film. To enter, they had to not only submit the edited short film, but also a second short film capturing the behind-thescenes action during its making. This included some panoramic shots of the coastline filmed by Timothy who is one of a few film-makers

16-year-old brothers. Timothy tells how he, together with his cousin Kyle Smith who was the assistant director, camera assistant Dylan Theron, and the three surfers packed a trailer to the brim with equipment and surfboards and headed for the Wild Coast in mid-September. “We arrived early on the Friday morning. On that first day, we scouted around and started shooting the first scenes at night around

who holds a remote pilot licence and is known for his work using drones. “I think Avuyile’s story was the most compelling part of the project and, to be involved with such an intimate and personal experience was a privilege. Learning from Tim and understanding his vision was an incredible experience too because his translation of the narrative is what perfectly captured the emotion within the story,” adds Kyle, who heads up his own local film company, Filmshark. Kyle describes winning the Judges’ prize – otherwise known as “the big one” – as mindblowing. “To be rewarded for doing what we love and taking a working holiday to the Transkei is something I thought would never happen in a year like 2020 – but here we are. I think this award will also remind film-makers in South Africa that, if we continue creating content and collaborating with one another, our unique stories can be seen and heard around the world.”

elile Gumede’s story reads like a movie script. Armed with a tertiary qualification in chemical engineering, she searched in vain for an internship to complete her practical training, but couldn’t find any business that would take her on. She returned to her home in the rural area of Ilembe disappointed but not defeated. Determined not to have to rely solely on a government grant to support herself and her baby daughter, Welile started looking for opportunities in her immediate surroundings in Maphumulo. “I could not just accept that I didn’t have a job, so set about identifying problems in my community that needed to be addressed. She’s been recognised for her success with awards from the Ilembe Chamber of Commerce, placement in Enterprise Ilembe’s incubator programme, and SAB’s Urban Agriculture Programme which invests in high potential farming businesses, by integrating technology solutions that will grow sustainable businesses and create lasting employment. Earlier this year, Welile was awarded the prestigious Rising Star prize in the Santam Women of the Future Awards. “This prize has opened doors for us,” says Welile. “We’ve had so much publicity and people want to partner with us. My aim is not only to train employees, but also other business owners.” She’s starting with 40 students who will receive on-the-job training and hopefully take their skills back to their own communities. Cultivating crops, especially tomatoes in the KZN coastal climate, is a challenge that Welile has mastered and she’s been approached to share her expertise in this sphere, too. She has seen the impact Azowel has had on her community – her employees have been able to transform shacks into houses and provide for their families. Her goal for the future is to expand the retail side of the business and to develop retail outlets for fresh produce closer to the rural areas where it is grown. “We would also like to move into agroprocessing our primary products so that they have a longer shelf-life, creating employment and skills development in rural communities, growing local economies, and disrupting the idea of having to move to big cities in order to find work.”

fter a fairly tumultuous year which has seen many small businesses going under, celebrating the first birthday of her vegan cafe Roots in November has been a major feat for owner Jennifer Swanepoel (right). Situated at Burnedale Farm in uMhlali, Roots serves exclusively vegan and vegetarian dishes and is the first of its kind on the Dolphin Coast. Veganism – a plant-based diet once dismissed as an “off the wall food fad” – has become trendy and is no longer ridiculed as it has been seen to have numerous health benefits. Research has also shown that diets high in fruit and vegetables can help reduce heart disease, strokes, diabetes and premature death. Jennifer hasn’t always followed a plant-based lifestyle. “I specialised in early childhood development for most of my career before venturing into the hospitality industry. Then in 2015 I was diagnosed with renal failure. The cause? An autoimmune disease called IGA Nephropathy. “I had to make some drastic lifestyle changes to reduce the toxic build up (usually filtered through the kidneys) in my body. Nine months later I started on hemodialysis, where further dietary changes were needed, and nine months after that I had a kidney transplant and life went pretty much back

The struggle at this time was to find medication that would not be toxic to my kidney, to treat this condition. After much trial and error and struggling with the side effects of the different medications, I told my doctors I would like to see what I could do to help myself by changing what I ate. “I cut out all animal products from my diet, and within two weeks the inflammatory
markers had dropped and I could feel a difference. Two years later and I haven’t had any relapses. My renal function is always spot on and I feel great,” continued Jennifer. “The next challenge was what do you eat when going out for dinner to a restaurant. There was very little in the way of vegan food on the menu. This lead me to start experimenting with recipes and I loved what I was able to create – and that is how Roots came about! “My first introduction to the hospitality industry was when I waitressed for extra

money, and I also worked at the Royal Hotel for a while as a relief manager at the coffee shop. That’s where I was introduced to the finer side of hospitality. For as long as I can remember I have wanted to have my own catering business and one of the reasons is because I absolutely love chatting with people and getting to know them better. There isn’t really a better place to do this than around good food. his distinctly Durban treat – available from one of two branches of Sugarlicious (one in uMhlanga, the other on Florida Road) – is on a great trek, with a branch already open in Johannesburg. The ice-cream itself is available from outlets as far afield as Nelspruit, with an outlet in Cape Town on the cards, and talk of the dreamy delights soon becoming available on the KZN North Coast. The creator of Sugarlicious is patisserie chef Zakeeya Mitha. Q: Ice-cream, yes; macarons, yes. But what led to this heady combination? A: I’d seen ice-cream macarons overseas and had to try them for myself, so began playing around in 2014. Initially it was just for the family, but my husband persuaded me to take it public. I thought it wouldn’t work but it was an instant success. We began with six flavours, and now have between 18 and 20 at any one time, with limited editions, and products that we occasionally bring back. Q: What has been the Sugarlicious experience of Covid-19? A: It’s been really tough. Sales plummeted after the first speech and after the hard lockdown we had to choose between paying our suppliers or paying our staff. Of course we paid the staff, and so had unpaid accounts for the first time in our lives. We had to innovate and act quickly in order to get cash flow going. We had been planning 120ml ice-cream

I thought it would be far too sweet – it’s gooey dough, soaked in sugar syrup – but I paired it with sev (salty, crunchy noodles) and it’s a huge hit. Q: What are the crowd pleasers? And what is your favourite flavour? A: The Burfee with its rose and cardamom notes is our most iconic and most popular, probably followed by Cookies & Cream, because who doesn’t love an Oreo? The Chocnut

cups, but we launched early and found stockists all over the province, many at service stations. We also launched a delivery service as soon as that was allowed, and are now delivering to as far as Kimberley and Bloemfontein. Q: You once called your husband your “test kitchen”. Is he a good measure of what will be a success and what might not? A: He has such a good head for business and is so supportive. In 2015 he told me I was going to be on Top Billing! He is also my biggest critic. If the flavour is not 100% perfect it doesn’t

Delux, dipped in premium Belgian chocolate and roasted peanuts, is the most popular in our signature collection. My favourite is whatever flavour I’ve just worked on, so – much to my husband’s delight – I’m now in love with Jalebi and Sev! Q: What was your least successful flavour? A: Lavender. It tasted like soap, and never made it out the kitchen. Q: Any odd requests? A: We had a customer who wanted a dairy-free, colourfree, vegan product. Sadly, the only suitable product in our shop was bottled water.

nternationally renowned South African jewellery designer Kirsten Goss’ designs are always forward-thinking, bold and feature pieces with interesting inspirations. Her new collection’s back-story is even more fascinating than usual, though. Kirsten – who went to school in Durban and bases her business here – and her family found themselves stranded on a tiny island in the Seychelles for three months over South Africa’s Covid-19 lockdown, and this organically-inspired collection, called BANG-BANG, is the result. “It was a surprise, Robinson Crusoe-esque situation,” she says. “We were on the island on holiday and lockdown began leaving us with no way to leave the Seychelles or to enter South Africa. We thought it would be for three weeks and had no idea it would last for three months!” she says. Kirsten and her family made the best of it, working and schooling remotely and enjoying island life, biking to get fruit and veggies and exploring the unspoilt beauty surrounding them. “There is no way I would have been brave enough to plan it, but it was a wonderful hiatus from daily life and had my creative juices running wild,” she says. “The collection reflects the textures, rawness and visceral experiences of

being so back-to-nature in a Creole island setting, the masses of tropical and natural shapes like the wildly abundant fruit and vegetables; oceanic granite rock formations; coral reefs and lush verdant oversized jungle leaves and pods. It’s packed with precious colourful gems, nuggets of gold and lots of wonderfully natural formations.” “Fun, sophistication and luxury all rolled up into one luscious experience”, is how Kirsten would best describe her brand which has been running from her Durbanbased workshop for 18 years. BANG-BANG remains true to her established style featuring the shapes and undeniable

just the start of a much bigger collection developing from “this life-changing time in nevernever-land.” She has embraced the ancient elements of the island too, with a nod to the relics and talismanic symbols prevalent on the island evident in the newly launched Charm Offensive and Zodiac collections. There is perfection in the imperfection of these recent pieces that is evocative of
the natural world with an abundance of texture that’s nevertheless still luxe and expertly executed. “It’s lavish and sumptuous and fresh,” Kirsten says. Look out for more of Kirsten’s island adventures interpreted in metal and precious stones – if these first pieces are anything to go by, her tales are vivid and extraordinary.

THE HOLIDAY SEASON IS THE PERFECT TIME TO SPRUCE UP YOUR HOME. CANDICE BOTHA ASKED A FEW LEADING LOCAL DESIGNERS TO GIVE US THEIR EASY UPDATE IDEAS ADD COLOUR AND PATTERN
Introducing colour, texture and pattern in the accent pieces can completely transform a drab room into a gorgeous interior as Jocelyn Jones of Jossi Interior Design has done here. “Bring in pops of colour, be more daring with pattern, and add a rug for some texture,” she suggests.

“Scatters can set the tone and pull the decor together delivering enormous impact with little effort as they give you colour, contrast, pattern and design all in one,” says Shelley Scribante of House of Decor. MOUNT SOME SHELVING “Without taking up too much space, shelving offers a very practical way to get creative and showcase your favourite pieces, whether art, decor or crockery,” says Lane Baglione of Interior Lane. DISPLAY ACCESSORIES “Turn an empty wall into a gallery using artworks and sculptural art pieces,” says Jocelyn. “Look out for interesting vases and objects for empty console and coffee tables and group these together to create focal points on otherwise bare or cluttered tabletops.” “Choosing contrasting colours or patterns and different textures in your accessories can give you depth and interest in your decor,” says Shelley.

3 HANG SOFT CURTAINS “Adding the right window treatment can truly transform your interior,” says Lane. Hanging your curtains from the highest point possible makes a

5 WALLPAPER A WALL Shelley uses wallpaper to provide another dimension to a space. “Whether you are all about colour or prefer a simpler more monochromatic finish, you can make over an area just by adding wall finishes,” she says. FEATURE PENDANT LIGHTS Adding feature pendants to a room instantly makes it feel more contemporary. “Pendant lights can be functional, but the right fitting can also enhance the mood – creating an intimate or glamorous feel,” says Jocelyn. “It is a quick and easy installation and you can add a pendant to the side of your dressing table, bathroom vanity or above bedside pedestals, and of course, pendants over dining tables and breakfast areas is incredibly popular,” she says.

7
REPLACE THE HANDLES “A simple yet highly effective way of updating your home is to change your old handles to something that suits your style and taste,” says Lane. “There are no set rules when choosing handles or knobs as long as they are practical. With so many options on the market you can choose from bronze, brushed nickel, copper, wood and shiny steel finishes. They come in all shapes, sizes and forms, and are also relatively inexpensive and easy to install.” ADD ART TO YOUR WALLS “Introduce artwork in different forms,” suggests Shelley. “I enjoy playing with scale as it makes an impact. Look for different mediums of artwork and challenge yourself.”

ADD GREENERY “Adding plants is one of the easiest ways to update your home for summer,” says Sabrina. “Even changing the plants around from time to time can add a new look and feel. If a space is too dark, there are many faux plants that look realistic without the fuss.”

uring the pandemic, homes have become more than a sanctuary, they have also evolved into what is being dubbed “quarantine bubbles”, with many people now spending most of their time at home, working or studying. According to Dr Andrew Golding, chief executive of the Pam Golding Property group, it has become evident that many families and individuals are assessing and re-evaluating their existing accommodation in order to determine how it matches up with their new lifestyle needs both now and into the future, and taking into account any potential future quarantine requirements. If their current living space cannot be adapted to suit their changing needs, they may look to relocate to a home and a location which provides the options they seek. This may be a larger home with outdoor space, a better lifestyle in a more desirable destination, or perhaps a new build in a residential development custom-designed to cater for their specific requirements. Given the above, and looking to the future, the question arises: How are developers, architects and homeowners alike responding to redefining homes as a quarantine space? Today, people are wanting to get the most out of their homes or living space. Work-from-home space is rapidly becoming a priority, increasingly so if two family
78
members need to be catered for in this regard, as well as study space for children. This may result in a guest bedroom making way for workspace, or in the case of a new development, the kitchen area being downsized to provide additional space for other purposes. However, during lockdown, with more people cooking and with newfound culinary skills, the kitchen may be playing a bigger role in close-knit family life. It may even require additional space such as a pantry. In the US, in response to the pandemic and lockdown, a developer is already branding a new-build residential development as a “sanctuary”

DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, OUR LIFESTYLE NEEDS HAVE RAPIDLY CHANGED, SO IT MAKES SENSE TO ADAPT OUR HOMES TO SUIT OUR FUTURE NEEDS, EXPLAINS GARETH BAILEY with air purifiers and a wellness theme. In new residential developments, access to private outdoor space is another feature likely to experience increasing demand, and in line with this, some developers are already looking to incorporate courtyards or
outdoor terraces – or even a small balcony – for apartments as a means of providing tranquil “green” space. Already popular, mixeduse developments also hold potential for higher demand, especially those incorporating a range of amenities including
w w w . t h e r i d g e o n l i n e . c o . z a
co-working spaces, retail, leisure and open space, making them increasingly selfcontained and self-sufficient. This same concept applies to residential estates, which are proving more sought after due to the limited exposure to potential health risks, and which offer a host of facilities including sport, leisure and exercise amenities, retail and even schooling. In terms of interior layouts of residences, another developer is looking at introducing a transition zone – which could be a conversion of the traditional hallway – as a sanitising station which acts as a buffer between the outside environment and the virus-free, interior living space. This could include a wash basin or even a shower.

How are developers, architects and homeowners alike responding to redefining homes as a quarantine space?
We’re also likely to see a leaning towards multifunctional and more flexible rooms or areas. At the same time interior configurations will ideally still allow for quiet corners or an alcove with sliding doors for videoconferencing or some privacy from other family members. Likewise, there will also be small indoor gardens as an escape for de-stressing, bearing in mind that indoor plants also help “clean” the air while soothing the senses. More space for storage will help keep homes uncluttered and easy to keep clean. With an increased focus on the home zone, additional space for exercise and family activities becomes a prerequisite, while fibre connectivity is critical both for business and leisure purposes. Another must-have is good natural (fresh) air flow via large windows and floorto-ceiling doors allowing for cross-ventilation, while fixtures and fittings such as copper, bronze and brass for door handles are naturally antibacterial and antiviral, and hard, smooth counter tops and surfaces make for easy cleaning and sanitising. The Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown has shown us there is much to be said for multi-generational living, with shared accommodation that also caters for grandparents and adult children – both from a humanitarian perspective eliminating lone isolation, as well as economics, enabling shared costs.

don’t give Christmas presents,” I said to my partner. “It just ends in tears.” In fact, I don’t give any presents at all, and my partner thinks this is because I am a cheapskate – but that is only mostly true. It’s also because I’ve been traumatised. It all started when I was young. I don’t know if you’ve met my family, but they’re a bunch of weirdos. There was my Aunty Irene, who used to travel a lot for business, so every Christmas she would give me a loosely wrapped bundle of those tiny free soaps and shampoos from cheap hotel bathrooms. It’s not just that 10-year-old boys are about as grateful for sudsy cosmetics as they are for a twin-pack of underpants – sometimes she would already have used some shampoo but then not closed the lid tightly enough so that it leaked and I would sit there unwrapping a soggy, soapy piece of festive wrapping paper, trying to smile through my tears. By the way, have you ever wondered precisely when hotels started folding the ends of toilet rolls into points? I know exactly when it was because that was the year my Christmas present from Aunty Irene was a half-used roll of toilet paper with its end folded into a neat little point. That half a toilet roll made my dad laugh. “It could have been worse,” he said. “She could have given you the used half!” The rest of them weren’t much better. My granny was very frugal. You couldn’t come

FOR SOME, THERE’S VERY LITTLE JOY IN THE ART OF GIVING – AND RECEIVING – CHRISTMAS PRESSIES, LAMENTS DARREL BRISTOW-BOVEY to her house without bringing her a gift, but she never opened it in front of you – they went into a special cupboard. She would open them later after you’d left, keep the ones she liked and sticky-tape the others back into their crumpled wrapping paper for re-gifting purposes. Once I opened my Christmas present from granny and my mom frowned and said, “Mom, isn’t that the electric carving knife I gave you for your birthday?” I didn’t mind, because I could definitely use a knife that could cut through a tree if it had a long enough extension cord, but my mom took it away because if anyone was going to use the electric carving knife she’d won at the work raffle, it would be her.
She would open them later after you’d left, keep the ones she liked and sticky-tape the others back into their crumpled wrapping paper As granny got older we realised she didn’t even open the presents any more before re-gifting them, so I made big savings by giving her my spare supplies of socks and handkerchiefs and mini

shampoos. Once I gave her a brick, which I recognised two years later when my sister opened it at her baby shower. I explained all this to my partner. “I don’t care,” she said. “We’re seeing my parents on Christmas Day, and you’re not arriving without a present.” “But I don’t even give you a present!” “I’ve noticed,” said my partner drily. “But they’ll have bought a present for you. Imagine how awkward it will be.” I grumbled but it was my first Christmas with the in-laws and I wanted to make a good impression. I didn’t know what to buy, but fortunately my partner had a suggestion. It was a bit expensive, but she knew they’d love it. On Christmas Day I proudly presented the gift. “Merry Christmas!” I bellowed. They looked at me awkwardly. “Um,” they said, “you do know we’re Jewish? We don’t celebrate Christmas.” Even while I was blushing and stammering, I realised that in the game of life, my partner is way ahead of me. “Oh, he knows that,” she said silkily, taking the present from my hands. “He bought it for me.”
