WAVE Whether you’re shredding overhead point breaks or slashing onshore beach breaks, we’ve got it covered. New for 2018 is the Grip! The wave-weapon of champions, its wide swallow tail and fast rocker line pumps out loads of spray through the turns. Our wave team has been testing this concept for over 24 months and have specified the best possible fin setup per board, the name Grip is a result of that R&D process, defining exactly how much grip and drive each shape needs. The Stubby TE welcomes the new 82 and 89 sizes to the fine-tuned 76 and 99. The parallel concept and wide diamond tail provides supercharged planing, whilst the rail shape and compact outline make tight turns easier than ever. OCEAN MINDED — OCEAN MINDED
KEEP IT GREEN
Our Ocean Minded spirit is the driving force behind our passion to create and innovate. Complemented by our ethos of ›protecting what you love‹, we celebrate the challenges we face each day to come up with new ways to combine both. Acknowledging the part we play in creating a cleaner, greener environment we work hard to source ethical and raw materials to utilise in the production, packaging and distribution of our products. This year, we are proud to announce the launch of the Gecko Eco. Achieving a premium product with a unique layup of Flax, Cork and Bamboo, we’re one step closer to accomplishing an eco-friendly future.
Green is the prime color of the world and we intend to do everything we can to keep it that way. As we evolve our brand and create new products, our primary goal is to reduce the ecological impact on the environment by using ethically sourced materials. Each year significant gains are made, from using Ozone-Free foam cores and coloured resins vs spray paints, through to smart packaging and audited facilities. We embrace the challenges ahead and our Gecko Eco is a huge step in the right direction.

GECKO ECO EDITION —
INTERVIEW WITH FANATIC PRODUCT MANAGER DANIEL AEBERLI As a brand, our passion for innovation, design and quality means that we are on a constant search to enhance upon what we’ve already created. We believe that we have a responsibility to Mother Nature and the incredible environment she provides us with because without it, windsurfing wouldn’t be as we know it today. Daniel, the new Gecko Eco is a great looking board! Is that actually a commercial product or more of a marketing gag? The Gecko Eco is just one small step at the forefront of many, many steps happening behind the scenes at Fanatic for many years. We haven’t just recently started a sustainability program for marketing reasons in times of global warming. Every person at Fanatic spends his life in the ocean and nature as much as possible and it’s part of our mindset to protect our beautiful planet! Our Ocean-Minded Logo on every Fanatic board has already been transferring this mindset for quite a few years. At Boards & More we have task forces for more sustainable packaging, for eco friendly production processes and materials, for optimized shipping in both – sourcing and the final product, etc. etc. There is even an employee bonus program for riding a bike to work instead of using a car. Communication about all of these things is kept low, as we think this shouldn’t be worth a mention, for us it’s a matter of course in order to reduce the footprint we’re leaving while bringing the highest quality product to our customer. The product materials are just a small and single part of the whole chain we’re looking at – but the Gecko Eco is that product showing this aspect the most. To get back to your question – yes it’s a great product delivering great fun, we already had some good orders before it was even released onto the market!
Interesting that you bring up looking at the whole picture. Shipping is a major factor in terms of pollution. Wouldn’t it make sense to produce closer to your customer base – most Windsurf boards are sold in Europe … ? It’s correct that shipping is one of the fields we’re looking at optimizing. As we’re a group of leading watersports brands within Boards & More, we’re able to achieve great steps reducing shipping pollution with combined shipments from Asia to Europe and from the suppliers to our production facilities using similar materials throughout our group. In most markets, Boards & More uses a central warehouse system, meaning direct shipments to customers and shops, again improving efficiency and lowering CO2 levels. This central warehouse also reduces overstock /closeouts by making planning more efficient, further eliminating wastage and extra transport costs. Right now there is no option for us coming close to our high-end production facilities in Asia for the final production. All our prototyping is happening in Europe with very limited shipping to our R&D teams. Sustainability also means that quality wise and economically the setup has to work out to sustain jobs at one end and keep our costumers happy at the other end. As we’re a premium brand delivering the best products, we produce at the world’s best facilities with best standards in terms of production techniques, but also in terms of being at the forefront of recycling cut-offs, waste management, the use of non-toxic materials etc. Last but not least delivering a quality product is key to being sustainable. Can you explain that? How exactly does quality reduce the CO2 balance of a product? If you have to replace products for quality reasons or your products simply have a short life-span, then that’s not very sustainable even if you include some 10% sustainable materials to make a good impression at first glance. Our warranty rates are minimal, as we’re focusing on every detail – not just including natural
S U S TA I N A B L E P E R F O R M A N C E
25
materials or some with a better CO2 balance. We only implement materials and concepts into production after looking at the entire process and after testing them 100 % to maintain being at the forefront of both – delivering eco-friendly products and making sure these products actually work and don’t have to be replaced and ultimately create more waste and pollution. Why did you choose the Gecko for being the ECO-Flagship of the Fanatic-Range? How is it built? It had to be a model that was diverse, versatile, user-friendly and suited to a wide range of skills without being focused too much on high-end performance like our wave or slalom models. The obvious choice was the top-selling Gecko. Its wide and thin Freeride concept makes it super stable, comfortable, easy to gybe and above all a whole lot of fun. The internal component of the Gecko Eco is still made of closed cell Ozone free EPS Blanks. We then add a layer of cork instead of PVC onto the deck. Whilst researching alternatives to carbon fibre for use in our bamboo and composite constructions, we came across Flax, a product that was not only environmentally friendly but had all performance and processing properties we were looking for. The Flax fibres are woven together to create a mesh material which is then laid over the cork – a fine finish that can be seen on the deck of the board. The last piece of the puzzle is to use Sicomin’s GreenPoxy® Bio Resin to coat and laminate, a product we’re using throughout the entire Fanatic range. Bio Resin has great amounts of sustainable and renewable components of vegetable oils as well as having a clean and efficient production process without hazardous emissions. Finally to give the Gecko Eco a great looking base, we’ve used renewable Bamboo with a natural matt finish, instead of the PVC. By using optimised colour components and resin systems based on their solvent concentration we’ve managed to produce striking graphics that have minimized environmental consequences.

High Resistance composite technology is a durable construction for everyday use. A thick, durable outer skin gives the hull maximum strength, as well as making it ding and impact resistant. Strategic use of fibre reinforcements ensure adequate stiffness. In combination with the user-friendly EVA deck, HRS can be seen on the standard Gecko, as well as the Viper / Ripper ranges.
On the smaller 89 – 98 Falcons and on the Falcon Speed boards, it is used solely on the deck for better flex of the board in choppy conditions. When combined with the PVC sandwich technology and Glass reinforcements, the Biax / Carbon provides a balanced stiffness / flex / weight ratio.

GRIP TE OUR NEW ALL-IN-ONE WAVE WEAPON — INTERVIEW WITH FANATIC WAVE R&D MANAGER AND PWA PRO KLAAS VOGET ON THE GRIP TE
You’ve kicked the very successful Quad and TriWave models out of the range for 2018 and replaced them with one line called the Grip. What’s the idea behind this reduction? Don’t you think something is missing? After our TriWave was relaunched two years ago with an incredibly early planing shape, Victor (Fernandez) and I started experimenting with different boards based on the ease of use and planing performance of the TriWave, with the extra turning abilities, which we liked in our Quads. With some adjustments to the TriWaves rocker line and bottom shape we’ve found a combination which loosened the board up – especially when used with a Quad setup – to allow even quicker reactions than with the Quad, but still keeping the incredibly fast and early planing level of our TriWave. It turned out to be that one shape we pulled out of our bags wherever we went – from the Canaries, to the North Sea, Cape Town and even Hookipa – even though we had all the options of more specific custom boards for a certain type of conditions. Anyone who tried one of these boards wanted to buy them straight away and called them the best and most complete Waveboard they’ve ever tried. After using these boards all around the world for about two years we’re confident that it will be loved by both, our previous TriWave, as well as our previous Quad customer – plus everyone else who likes to keep it simple and wants the ultimate one Waveboard. If it’s so good in everything – why do you still offer the Stubby? Who should get a Stubby and who needs the Grip? The Stubby is a favourite amongst sailors who want to get the most out of average conditions, but still score that sick day every now and then. Its planing character and turning is unique and the upwind ability is outstanding! The Stubby will blow your mind when you least expect, but still keeps up when the conditions get really good. The Grip is on the other end of the spectrum. It’s a modern version of a classic wave outline with a more nervous feel to it, while the Stubby has this super stable planing through its parallel rails. The Grip wants to turn, it excels in good sideshore conditions, but still delivers all that’s needed when the power of the wave fades away and the wind swings onshore. Both boards are very user-friendly and both shapes have collected trophies in PWA competitions. You can use both boards everywhere, it’s a question of style and and the conditions that you sail in most regularly. Why the name Grip? What does it stand for? The name defines the actual amount of grip and drive you want per board size. You can setup the 3 medium sizes (76, 82, 89) of the Grip with pretty much all fin combinations out there, but we recommend the Quad and Thruster setup depending on the conditions you’re sailing in and the amount of grip these conditions require. Our smallest Grip – the 68 – comes with 4 Slot Boxes only, as the Quad setup adds the amount of grip needed for windier and choppier conditions, as well as the turning potential for the lighter rider. The large Grip 99 comes with 3 fin boxes and a Thruster fin set for improved planing for lighter winds and lift under the back foot for the heavier and more powerful rider. The Grip 76, 82 and 89 are equipped with 5 Slot Boxes to ride them as either Quad or Thruster, depending on the riders size, level and conditions. They are supplied with our favourite Quad set and we offer a Thruster set as accessory. To put it simply: Quad = more grip, more control, tight carving turns. Thruster = less grip, good planing, slashy and more slidy turns. 2018

THE STUBBY CONCEPT —
REDUCED LENGTH Very wide nose and tail sections allow for shorter overall length, which reduces the boards swing weight, resulting in fast reactions and quick rotations.
PARALLEL RAILS Narrow in the center, wide in tail and nose. The straighter rail outline results in a reduction of drag and increases the effective rail length that gets used in the turns for great stability and control.
TRIM AND STANCE A fast rocker line guarantees early planing and speed, while the trim with the back foot right on the tail offers quick and tight turning.
CLASSIC CONCEPT
STUBBY CONCEPT
Classic outline offers more length, which is forgiving in certain manoeuvres, jumps and choppy conditions. Curvier rails support turning, narrow tail offers control and grip also with smaller fins.
Narrow center width and parallel rails offer great speed and stability in turns, compact length and stance gives a new sensation in turns and moves.

WINDSURFING
FUEL LING THE FUN —
37
WITH NEW STYLES AND TRENDS TRICKLING INTO THE WINDSURFING INDUSTRY EACH SEASON, WE EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE OF CREATING PRODUCTS THAT CAN FUEL OUR ADDICTION TO RIDE. ONE OF THE BIGGEST CRAZES WE’VE SEEN COME ABOUT THIS YEAR IS FOILING. SO IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE WE PUT A LOT OF EMPHASIS ON DEVELOPING THE ULTIMATE FREERIDE / FOIL BOARD FOR 2018. To enter the Foil market, we decided to focus on a model that could be dynamic enough to be used every day for Freeriding, as well as forgiving enough for those new to riding a Foil. Our starting point was to select a model that was popular and with many userfriendly Freeride characteristics. The ›wider, thinner and with less volume‹ concept of the Gecko, teamed with plenty of performance features gave our design team a lot to play with. The main goal was to make a product that would shine both with, and without a Foil. Choosing the larger, more voluminous sizes of 120 and 133 got us off on the right foot. The success of wide compact outline also added to the overall Freeride performance with its early planing and manoeuvrability. The increased length and parallel outline delivers stability and planing support, whilst the high performance scoop rocker line and flat deck transitioning out into thinned rails ensures the ultimate carving experience. So with the Freeride attributes of the board mastered, it was time to focus on the specific Foil features. When riding a Foil there’s a significant amount more load that the board has to endure, so our next task was to reinforce those vulnerable areas.
G E C KO F O I L E D I T I O N
First up was the Tuttle Box. We created much deeper space to accommodate the Foil, reinforcing it with Biax fibre to cope under the pressures that are created when rising up. The new Deep Tuttle Box is also able to accommodate a Freeride fin, and is light for superb planing performance. Another area that needed some attention was the nose of the board. The fuller nose outline of the Gecko, has been implemented into the Gecko Foil in order to combat potential stalling or submerging of the board when coming down off the Foil. By adding extra reinforcements to the area, we’re able to establish a board that is durable enough to withstand crashes and surprises when learning to Foil, without affecting Freeride performance. We designed the Gecko Foil’s performance around the new Fanatic Foil Flow H9, and there’s no doubt it’s a winning combination. However, for windsurfers who already own a Foil, the Gecko Foil will also work with other brands as long as the Foil fits with the Deep Tuttle Box. The new Gecko Foil opens up a whole new way of riding with minimum hassle. Accessible to all, it brings an additional element of fun to every session.

GECKO ECO EDITION — FREERIDE ART. NO.: 13800-1020
THE GECKO ECO IS MORE THAN JUST A FIELD STUDY OF WHAT’S POSSIBLE IN TERMS OF ECO-FRIENDLY TECHNOLOGY IN WINDSURFING. BUILT WITH FLAX, CORK AND BAMBOO INSTEAD OF A CLASSIC GLASS AND PVC SANDWICH, IT EMBODIES OUR OCEAN MINDED SPIRIT LIKE NO OTHER BOARD – AND HAS ITS VERY OWN LOOK AND FEEL. We at Fanatic have been focused on sustainability for years, exploring the options to build and deliver more eco friendly products to the industry – you can see this by looking for our Ocean Minded logo on every Fanatic board we’ve produced in recent years. The Gecko Eco embodies this spirit like no other board in our range. Bio Resin is used throughout the entire Fanatic range, but the Gecko Eco and its field of use allows us to go further. A Flax / Cork sandwich in the deck and a beautiful Bamboo bottom leaves this board entirely without PVC, and reduces the use of Glass fibres to the minimum. No additional colours have been used under the reduced graphics, leaving the Gecko Eco’s inner values to shine through the deck and bottom with pure beauty. A special board with a unique flex creates a fun responsive feeling beneath your feet and less impact on the environment. Stay Ocean Minded!
KEY FEATURES ›› Eco friendly Flax / Cork and Bamboo layup ›› Superior optics through transparent Bio Resin ›› Wide compact outline for early planing and easy manoeuvres ›› High performance scoop rocker line with a higher entry and flat tail release ALICE ARUTKIN
›› Flat deck transitioning into thinned out rails for the ultimate carving experience with a secure stance ›› Flat panel power V bottom shape for easy planing and control ›› Reduction in drag and enhanced control due to 75 degree pintail

GECKO — FREERIDE ART. NO.: 13800-1011,
13800-1012 (DAGGERBOARD)
THE GECKO IS THE MOST USER-FRIENDLY AND FUN FREERIDEBOARD WE’VE EVER HAD IN THE LINEUP. ITS SUCCESS AND POPULAR REPUTATION HAS GROWN THE GECKO RANGE TO A TOTAL OF SEVEN EXCITING SHAPES. JUST STEP ON, HOOK IN AND GET READY FOR A WHOLE LOT OF FUN! The general concept behind the Gecko is wider, thinner and with less volume. These attributes offer a great deal of balance and stability for easy gybing, as well as a fun responsive feeling beneath your feet. The increased length and more parallel outlines in the larger sizes (120+) cater to the rider’s needs with extra stability and planing support. Regardless of your level, the Gecko will carry you through your gybes or have you planing in the footstraps for the first time. With plenty of performance features built in, the Gecko will execute any move effortlessly. Additional footstrap options, plus daggerboard versions of the Gecko 156+ make this range the perfect companion for your progression from the first steps to planing through your gybes. It will leave nothing but a smile on your face.
KEY FEATURES ›› Reduction in drag and enhanced control due to 75 degree pintail ›› Wide compact outline for early planing and easy manoeuvres ›› Increased length and more parallel outlines for the larger sizes (120+) supplying stability and planing support ›› High performance scoop rocker line with a higher entry and flat tail release LISA GERTENBACH

BLAST — PERFORMANCE FREERIDE ART. NO.: 13800-1010 (TXTR ), 13800-1009 (LTD)
THE BLAST HIT THE SCENE WITH A BANG! INSPIRED BY SOME OF OUR MOST SUCCESSFUL MODELS – THE STUBBY AND LIGHTNING FAST FALCON – THE BLAST DOES EXACTLY WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN. REPRESENTING EVERYTHING THAT GOT US HOOKED ON WINDSURFING IN THE FIRST PLACE, WE GUARANTEE YOU’LL HAVE A BLAST! Evolving the Blast’s parallel rail concept further has proven to be exceptionally beneficial in its early planing performance, control, and ease of use. Having tested a variety of different shapes, it turned out that the concept initially introduced by our Wave department to create the Stubby, would be the spice needed in designing the ultimate Freeride machine with extra power. Similar to the new FreeWave STB, the Blast blew everyone’s mind once it hit the scene. As one of the most sought after Windsurf boards around, we’ve extended the line-up with the floaty Blast 145 in addition to the Blast 100, 115 & 130. Available in two constructions – the elite TeXtreme® Biax Carbon (TXTR / BXC) and our Biax fibre / Full PVC sandwich technology (BXF) – it’s never been so easy to have the Blast of your life!
KEY FEATURES ›› New 145 Blast for an exciting ride when others just float ›› Straighter, more parallel rails for reduced drag and cleaner waterline ›› Compact ›Stubby-Style‹ nose for reduced swing weight and super responsive foot steering through gybes ›› Wide diamond tail for minimum drag and extra planing power needed through lulls / light winds ›› Slim center width and a straighter rail flow for speed ›› Trim and stance perfectly match the board’s length, tail width and rocker line ›› Tuttle Box for easy performance upgrade through more specialized Slalom Fins (sizes 130 & 145 approved for Foil use) ›› Smooth and controlled ride over choppy water achieved via flat panel power V bottom shape, and a slight double concave from nose to center ›› Flat deck shape transitioning into thin, more defined rails for superior carving with maximum stability in the stance area 2018
