years, singer a little
Thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music magazine, it truly is a great honour as I am a big fan, let’s get right into it, with a career spanning over 30 years, how have you managed to remain grounded with your band Mango Groove for so long? Well first up, thank you for the kind words J I think more than anything we continue to be humbled by the love and support we continue to receive from South Africans….this keeps us strong and it keeps us creative. We have also always believed in what we are doing, and the Mango sound is so distinctive (love it or hate it!), that this has given us a real continuity through the years. One thing I have always admired about Mango Groove, is the interracial groups within the band and the different cultures which defiantly shows in the bands music, was that something that was thought of when you first started or did you just decide you want to start a band with some awesome people regardless of their race? Mango’s development from the early days was very organic, and actually quite messyJ. The dominant influence in our music (‘50’s and ‘60’s SA urban sounds) certainly shaped which musicians joined the group, but above all it was about the music and the ideas that were important to us, and this shaped the final line-up. Mango groove is a band that lived through the apartheid era, with the different race groups within the band, was it hard to be in this sort of band during this difficult time for South Africa? Yes, it was hard, both in SA and internationally. In SA we had all sorts of logistical problems in the early years (venues, travelling, audiences, that sort of stuff), while internationally South African music was to a large degree cocooned from the rest of the world and it was difficult to penetrate outside markets. Politics aside, this was compounded, I guess, by the fact that our early years were ‘’preinternet’’ When I think of Mango Groove, I think of a band that has produced hit after hit, I mean you have Special Star, Dance Some More, Home talk among others, and it must be a good feeling to be so successful at what you do for so long? Wow: you are making my head swell now: far too kind J We have always tried to write songs that are simple and accessible, but which also say something about the beautiful country we live in.
You recently got to open up for UB40 which was amazing by the way, how was that experience for you? Great crowds, and a great experience. We grew up on UB40: great songs, a great social conscience, and Ali Campbell is undoubtedly one of the great crooners of pop. It was an honour to share a stage with them. After all these years and after all the experience you have behind you, do you still get nervous when you go on stage, especially for an event like the UB40 S.A tour? We get nervous if we are going on stage to a crowd of 10! It’s a constructive energy, I believe, and one should never get complacent about what you do…
One of my favourite other bands Freshlyground was also on the bill for that show, to me Freshlyground is a lot like Mango Groove (again with different race and cultures within the band) and I am sure they look up to you as a band, how does it feel that you influenced a whole new generation of bands? The comparison is a flattering one, as FG are such a hugely talented and iconic SA group. If we had any influence on them, we would be delighted, but at the same time they are very unique and distinctive…one of their great strengths. Truth be told, and looking at Mango Groove specifically, we were influenced by many other artists as well (such is the nature of art), and we continue to be influenced by contemporary artists,
You have an amazing voice, how do you keep it going for so long, do you have any secret tips that you use to keep your voice intact?
Do you have any other albums in the pipeline, what is next for Claire Johnston and Mango Groove?
Thank you! I was lucky enough to have great vocal training from a young age, and I am always conscious of taking care of my voice, particularly if I sense a cold or flu coming along… the danger period for possible vocal damage. I cannot lie, though: I am not the most diligent when it comes to vocal practice or exercises .
A very exciting solo project due for release very soon, celebrating great SA songs, and featuring a host of iconic SA artists, some new Mango material in the pipeline, and a couple of mightily ambitious stage productions in pre -production!
You are also very successful overseas, when you do travel outside of South Africa, how do the public receive you? It’s always very rewarding, be it from homesick South Africans who go ballistic or new audiences who go mad even if they are not that familiar with the music! I believe Mango’s greatest strength is its live show, and I do be-
Thank you so much for doing this interview Claire, do you have any messages for your fans or our readers? Thank you: the pleasure was all mine. Thank you, too, to everyone for all the love, support and positivity: we are who we are because of you, and you continue to carry us forward!

Desolation of silence is a South African metal band from Cape Town. Desolation Of silence was formed early in the beginning of 2013 by original members Shannon Links and Brandon Brand (still present), over the months they went through various changes in the band, they released their first single 'Betrayal' which is doing very well. They are committed to performing various metal genres, yet they have a great passion for metal core and strive to make history.
Hi there thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music magazine, let’s start from the beginning, where did it all start for the band, what is the story behind Desolation of Silence? “We formed via two bands merging, ‘bleeding ruin’ and ‘Dredging up the past’, a few cut downs were made from 8 members to 5. After which a few replacements were made. A week past and we came up with our first name ‘As I fall’ until we realised the name was already taken. When we finally came up with our original name, we officially started. Together we went through changes and hardships and learnt to overcome it as more than a band.”
Desolation of Silence is an interesting band name, how did that name come about? “Well, most teens go through a phase in their lives where they feel Desolate, alone, helpless. Some go through rough times and feel as though they have been silenced by society, and everybody in this band has been through some of those rough patches in their lives, we’ve been through rough times as a band as well. Our love for music, the genre and the passion we have for it… It all came together and thus the name Desolation Of Silence was created, so that we could be the voice of those still silenced”
Can you tell us something about each member of the band? “Shannon Links- (Rhythm guitarist) fun loving person, the joker of the band. Always lightens everyone’s spirits and keeps us all on track even when we lose sight of everything. Also does admin for the band Brandon Brand-(Drummer) Focused and determined, won’t quit on anything or anyone no matter how hard the circumstance is. Brad Ricketts- (Lead Guitarist) Talented yet down to earth and humble. Quiet and extremely compassionate about his music and those around him. Daniel Petersen-(Vocalist) outgoing and outspoken, never afraid of a challenge and always daring yet he knows his limits. Krystin Kistensamy– (Bassist) quite a shy person, especially in front of new faces but loads of confidence onstage, she’s the only female in the band and that is quite unique
I see on your Facebook page it says you went through some line-up changes, what has the new members brought into the band? “Each member that has been a part of D.O.S. has left their mark on us, changing our main opinions on the ever -changing music industry, even our sound. This is why it was that hard to choose a specific genre. Those previous members changed our biased opinions by allowing us to look at it from both sides of the looking glass.”
Who is the song writer in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? “Brad Ricketts (guitarist) does the majority of the song writing, with that the band completes it. We mainly get our inspiration from daily life experiences and the music we listen to on a daily basis”
What genre of music would your music fall under? “Well we are not quite sure what specific genre we fall under, but from what our music sounds like we would say our music falls under the Metalcore genre, that is after all what we strive for”
If we have never seen you perform on stage before, what could we expect at one of your live gigs? “if people never saw us perform live yet, all we can say is, grab a few drinks, gather all your metalhead buddies, make sure you have loads of pain killers and lastly make sure your medical aid is up to date because we are going to make you break your neck. We will feed all your metal needs in every way. We are Desolation Of Silence and We will take over”
Do you get nervous before a gig? “At first, nerves nearly overruled us, but the moment the curtain opened and the lights flashed, excitement claimed us completely. So, that rush of excitement is and has always been anticipated at every gig that fol-
Explain what happens before a gig, does the band have any rituals, do you guys give each other high fives before a gig? “Before the curtains open we would like stand in a circle with a moment of silence, with our hands on top of each other in the middle and we would do a little speech and then hit the stage”
Tell us the craziest thing that has happened on stage? “The craziest thing that happened on stage was when we could get the crowd pumped, everyone enjoying the performance, the craziest experience was when we hit the stage and people were screaming ‘D.O.S’. Loads of crazy things happens at our gigs”
Who is some of the bands influences? “So many bands have shaped our bands outlook in this industry but the biggest contributors to our sound would be: Bullet for my valentine Trivium Killswitch engage Miss may i Sylosis Chelsea Grin”
Do you have any albums or recording out and where can people get hold of them?
So you have any social Medias, how can people get hold of you? “Yeah, people can get hold of us on our Facebook page at Www.facebook.com/ desolationofsilence for updates and info on our upcoming gigs, people can also check out our Metal4Africa page at www.metal4africa.com/ bands/desolation-of-silence “
Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last messages for your fans and our readers? “Basically, we would like to thank them for their constant support, even when we as a band lost faith in pulling through. So we would like to convey our main message to them, ‘keep pushing, and never give up. The strongest battles are given to the toughest, so remember to hold your head up high and be proud of whom you are’.”
Hi guys thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music magazine, let’s start from the beginning, where did it all start for the band, what is the story behind the band Lobstermen?
So we started Lobstermen.
It was late 2011 - December probably - and we had been partying non-stop for about a week when we realised that a Ministry record had been playing on continuous loop for about 6 hours (It was either Rio Grande Blood or Last Sucker – I don’t think we could tell then, and we still can’t).
Lobsters are the cockroaches of the sea – they feed, and thrive, on filth – much like the two of us. And, although they may appear hard on the exterior, their shells protect a rich, tasty and pathetically weak interior - again, much like us. It’s something we hate about ourselves, and each other.
It was at this point that we decided that we needed to indulge our mutual love for bleepy music, and that South Africa could really benefit from an Industrial strength kick in the gooch.
Lobstermen is quite interesting band name, how did that name come about?
So basically it’s self-loathing and seacockroaches. Yeah, that’s it
–
Can you tell us something about each member of the band?
Who is the song writer in the band and where do you get your inspiration from?
Cicero is a bit of an artsy avant-garde ponce who’s frequently spotted wearing a pig face while flailing around with local SwineCore heroes Boargazm. That is, when he’s not sporting a beret and a paint-stained smock while attempting to create high art in his “studio”. He also plays the bass and programs most of the drums.
The two of us share writing duties -
Tim basically spends 90% of his time wearing a monocle, smoking a pipe and researching the latest trends in moustache maintenance technology. When time allows he gives in to the multitude of inhabitants of his head, and puts them to good use as a voice over artist for TV and radio. In Lobstermen he’s in charge of vocals and guitars.
Cicero runs the rhythm section (drum programming and bass) while Tim pounds away on a guitar in hopes of stumbling across a decent, usable riff. Once we have a strong outline recorded, we mercilessly deride and criticise each other’s contributions up to that point – often ending in unnecessary namecalling and brutal slap-fighting (Obviously we take our martial arts very seriously.) Only once we’ve kissed and made-up do we even start to write the lyrics.
What genre of music would your music fall under?
guttural growls. So-called “brutality” is not heavy – it’s punishing. It’s aural abuse.
It’s basically Industrial Metal – no, actually it’s more an Industrial Metal paella – a filthy hotpot of sonic salmonella served with all the tastiest trimmings.
In our opinion blues, or even jazz, is often far heavier than many of the “heaviest” bands out
On your Facebook page it says you are easily one of the heaviest bands from South Africa, that is quite a bold statement, can you prove that statement?
there – it’s how you use dynamics, and how you work with the elements that make up your songs. Often it’s the spaces, the pauses in your music that make it heavy – the whole tension and release thing, you know? It’s about how you affect the listener, and how you inspire them to thrown down.
Heavy, as a concept, is a very subjective thing. As far as we’re concerned, fast does not equal heavy - nor does an incomprehensible vocalist constantly vomiting a gargantuan series of
(Either that or we could, if you want, invent some credibility-enhancing story to justify our claims. But we won’t - we’re just way too honest for that.)
If we have never seen you perform on stage before, what could we expect at one of your live gigs?
Explain what happens before a gig, does the band have any rituals; do you guys give each other high fives before a gig?
Our shows are pretty tame really – there’s the usual stuff like girls throwing hot prawns at us (we’re eternally grateful that it’s not something gross, like, say, silky underwear) and guys busting out their synchronised LobsterMoves in the boiling mosh-pot – I guess you could say we’re mostly about staying sophisticated and keeping it classy.
Rituals? Hahaha (laughs), naaah, not unless you’d call recounting our favourite parts from the latest episodes of Jersey Shore, holding hands while humming Kumbaya, and repeatedly pleading with our calamari-king Cthulu for mercy and forgiveness.
Do you get nervous before a gig? As long as our grandparents aren’t in the audience we’re usually good to go – not even Slayer can satisfy their appetite for destruction.
Pretty standard stuff, really. Tell us the craziest thing that has happened on stage? Well, someone did once throw a very tiny, very silky thong at us (shudder) and it got lodged in the headstock of Cicero’s bass. I think they were my gran’s.
Who are some of the bands influences? Many of our major influences are instantly apparent to even the casual listener – bands like Ministry, Slipknot and Rammstein – but if you dig a little deeper you’ll find elements from a surprisingly varied range of genres. Production wise it’s anything from Glitch to HipHop, all the way to BigBeat and Thrash metal - basically anything from guys like Dr Dre to Aphex Twin, from Prodigy to Slayer. Vocally Mike Patton and Everlast are huge influences, and musically we’d have to say the heavy groove of bands like Pantera, Korn and Strapping Young Lad really drove us. This is why Industrial, as such a broad genre, is so attractive to us – it encompasses everything from danceable beats to crushing guitars and crazy synths – all the things we love.

Hi guys, it’s awesome to finally be featuring you in Fanbase Music Magazine, let’s start from the beginning, what is the story behind the band and where did it all start? After Earth was formed in late 2012 as a 4 piece. After jamming together for a few months we added lead guitarist Mike Judkins to the line up and started to begin writing for our EP. When rhythm Guitarist Phillip Reiter left the band (due to family issues) we went in search of a replacement and found Greg Metcalf. We began playing shows around the area a building a name for ourselves. After playing together for several months, we decided to part ways with drummer, Anthony Hirsch, due to creative differences. A few days later, we picked up our current drummer, Sal Piazza, and second rhythm/lead guitar, Luciano Cappelli. Now we have a full six piece sound that we hope you guys love. Can you tell us something about each member of the band? Damon is a very powerful singer. He just nails almost any part that is written, and has such heartfelt and meaningful lyrics. Mike is very progressive with his guitar work…he can put power and emotion behind any riff and make the song pull you right in. Greg comes up with such a wide variety of rhythms, ranging from straight -up hard rock, to blistering metalcore. Luciano is a master of effects. He gives EVERY song a unique part, that NOBODY can come up with, and Billy is definitely a master of the low-end. He is the heart of every song, and his infectious bass grooves will be stuck in your head for days! And of course there's Sal: the beast that can put out a cover of Rush's YYZ whenever he wants. He definitely brings some life to the stage and studio that keeps everyone motivated. What genre of music would you classify your music in? I would consider us progressive hard rock/alternative metal. We tend to experiment quite a bit instrumentally, but at the same time we like to keep the groove, catchy vocals, and feel to keep the fans moving!
Who is the song writer in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? We all share song writing duties. Usually, when someone comes up with a finished riff, Sal will come up with his drum parts, Billy solidifies his insane bass lines off the drums, and we all jam along and make sure it all FEELS right. Of course we may add some things, or take them away, but it's all for the better of the song, and then Damon writes lyrics as we practice, and orchestrate the music. Inspirations come from everywhere especially in music. It can go from country to the other side of metal to rock n' roll and take us down some cool roads. If we have never been to one of your live gigs, what could we expect if we were to see you play live on stage? Passion. Each of us in the band strive to become better and better with each passing day. We go quite crazy on stage! We want to have fun, and more importantly, we want our fans to have fun as well. What is the craziest thing that has ever happened on stage? Sal: I think the craziest thing to happen on stage, also happened a few hours prior to the gig. I was in the van with the equipment, and as one of the amps fell over, I tried to save it, but ended up smashing my right pinky pretty bad! It swelled up quite a bit, and during the show, I accidentally hit it on my floor tom and by the end of the show, my drums were covered in blood. Definitely a fun show for sure! Do you still get nervous before a gig? Sal: See It varies for me‌it doesn't matter who I'm playing for, I always wanna make sure I give 100% at each show. I wanna NAIL my parts. I want the audience to know I'm giving 110%, and nothing less. Greg: I still get pretty nervous. I'm always playing the worst case scenario through my head so I'm prepared which is probably why I unintentionally keep myself nervous. I just want to play everything clean and have it sound the best it could be.
Can you explain what happens in preparation before a gig, do you have any band rituals before you go on stage? We goof off quite a bit! Of course we practice, and get our arrangements solid, but we always make sure that no matter what, we have fun, and make sure we stay close as a band no matter what. What are some of the band’s influences? A bit of everything really! We're influenced by blues, jazz, and of course rock and metal, so we listen to everything from Stevie Ray Vaughn, to Parkway Drive…we're just huge fans of music! Although South Africa’s metal scene is up and coming and very exciting, it is still pretty 3rd world compared to most countries with bands finding it hard to make a break through, what is the metal scene like in New York, is there a good following for metal/rock bands in that part of the world? The scene is beautiful in New York. There definitely is a brotherly bond between all the bands, regardless of genre, and the rock/ metal scene is definitely a fun thing to be a part of…we all have a blast!
“I would consider us progressive hard rock/ alternative metal. We tend to experiment quite a bit instrumentally, but at the same time we like to keep the groove, catchy vocals, and feel to keep the fans moving!
Asking Alexandria Fanbase Magazine Gig Review – JHB 5 May 2014 Asking for Trouble… When it was announced that Asking Alexandria was coming to our shores last year October, there was still a handful of people on social network saying “who the hell is that?”… But as most SA folk naturally seem to fall into the trend, from then until now the hype has just skyrocketed immensely and everyone who might not have heard of this invigorating Rock ‘n Roll act, sure as Hell do now. The atmosphere on the day definitely proved it. There was a colorful variety of people from all ages and walks of life at Nasrec on 5 May 2014 – From Pop-Punk kids to Long-haired die-hard metal fans. Everyone was ecstatic to be a part of such another amazing event hosted by Ram Touring and Monster. Firstly, let me say that I have personally been a huge fan of the band since the Punk Goes Pop Akon Cover days and really appreciated the “Reckless & Relentless” sophomore album released in 2011, so I was really excited to be able to experience the final evening of their “Break Down The Walls” World Tour. Therefore, I will write this review from a personal standpoint. It seems to be a trend lately for bands to end their tours here, and why not?... We have a beautiful country with amazing scenery and great venues and festivals, along with a booming music scene, not to mention the status of our Rand, which multiplies their cash ample times! It seems like the perfect destination for any international act to tour. Not always the case for local musicians unfortunately… (But let’s not get into that now)… Facing The Gallows opened the night with an energetic, Gut-Wrenching performance. They proved again that they are worthy of the exposure and in my opinion truly the tightest metal band out there locally. After 7 Years with the band, this was one of vocalist Bryan’s last shows with FTG, and the band did make a point of mentioning the audition process that is currently underway. All I can say is this: Whoever has to fill Bryan’s shoes, has his work cut out for him, because he is a very talented individual and sure has the pipes and pitch of legends. Good luck to FTG in their search ahead. The anticipation was thick in the air and the crowd was chanting “A--F*#KING—A” as Asking took to the stage. With a few minor sound issues throughout the set, these 5 British guys still managed to deliver a powerful show of note, complete with a terrifying Wall-Of-Death in “To The Stage” and a fair amount of female genitalia evenly distributed throughout the front few rows and on stage at some point. The band proudly promotes nudity, violence and all-round chaos on stage and in the crowd and definitely is not a message your Mum would approve of, however, they don’t care and it was made very clear by outspoken Frontman Danny Worsnop and his partner in crime, guitarist Ben Bruce with the following statement:
Review by: Chaz Nielsen Photography by:
Chris Preyser
“We’re going to hell, and you mother%#*kers are coming with us just by association”. It was also explained, “We came here to have a good time, drink your liquor, look at your ladies and do things to them, then eventually leave before you kill us…” Overall, I was disappointed with the fact that they joked around and talked so much in between songs and frankly, if they talked less nonsense about “swimming in an ocean of spunk” and “dumping some nip”, as well as all the clever partial covers and jam sessions, they could have added a few more tracks into the Setlist. Songs like a personal favorite of mine – “A Lesson Never Learned” Despite the great musicianship and the sensational performance of AA, I felt that there was an element of sexism and a lack of respect toward the fans in the manner in which they acted. They even claimed “We are sick of all these bands that come and are so serious, F*%# that Sh%#, this is Rock & Roll and we’re here to have some fun! We don’t take this s*#t seriously at all…” Which makes me wonder, who exactly IS taking it seriously, because they are doing a great job at it… It shows in the way AA’s albums, fame and fortune has soared in the last few years and when you read the lyrics of certain tracks like “Death Of Me” and “The Road”, as well as the blasphemous things they say, one can’t help but think that there is a definite Illuminati influence in the mix somewhere… (But once again, this is just my opinion and a topic for another discussion). Either way, they still remain one of the top-selling bands globally right now and have all the means to take over the world. They have become a household name amongst metal lovers everywhere. AA is definitely a band I would love to see again, but perhaps in a decade or so, when they have matured and perhaps outgrown this “Jack Daniels f%#K & Fight phase”. That might be appealing to certain people I guess (like the ladies that let their boobs hang out in public without daddy’s approval…). One thing is for certain – Their music and attitude of Asking Alexandria will forever be in the Rock n’ Roll History books and SA is truly grateful to David Fourie for bringing this chaotically sophisticated act out to Johannesburg and Cape Town for these well-organized events. Can’t wait for the next one!
Chaz Nielsen
Chaz Nielsen is a musician you might recognise, He has featured in Fanbase before, even had front cover a few months back, but that was all with his awesome metal band Because Of betrayal. But there is another side to this artist, yes, he is great screaming and growling his lungs out and going crazy on a metal stage, but this talented musician is a jack of all trades. Remove his band members from the equation, take away the metal thing and just leave him with his voice and guitar, and this performer can WOW a crowd - this boy can sing. As Because of Betrayal take a break to work on some writing and recording, Chaz has had more time to focus on his solo career, we catch up with him to discuss his solo career amongst other cool things he’s up to lately.
Hi Chaz thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music magazine, let’s start from the beginning, where did it all start as a musician? I’ve always loved performing, even from an early age. As a kid, I used to pretend that the couch was a piano and call my parents to watch me play Meat Loaf songs on it. In Primary school, I loved going to Drama classes and performing in plays. But making music only really started in High School, when some buddies started a band and needed a singer. I was terrible at singing, but it was the most fun I’ve ever had, gigging at house parties and writing songs. Did you come from a musical background? Not at all. In fact, besides my great, great grandmother, who used to play the organ in church apparently, I am the first person in my family’s history that’s taken music seriously and kept at it.
I have never been formally trained and I’m completely self-taught. I can’t actually imagine my life without music in it today, or ever. When you are a solo performer, what genre of music do you do? I do a wide array of Cover songs and Originals. When choosing covers, I like to take popular Rock/ Metal songs and transform them into Acoustic, as well as songs that have had an impact on my life and that I find inspiring in some way. You are a great song writer, where do you get your inspiration from and what do you find yourself writing about? My original songs are very close to my heart, they are more ballad-type tracks that have taken a lot of time to write, purely because they are all constructed
from real-life experiences I’ve lived through. I believe that helps your music connect with the audience more if they can relate to a feeling or emotion in the songs. I truly believe passion will always prevail over everything else. Even if your music is average, but you have a passionate performance or outlook on life, you will be welcomed with open arms into the listener’s hearts. Who is some of your musical influences? I grew up listening to Bruce Springsteen, Meat Loaf, Cat Stevens, Jim Steinman and Air Supply. As a kid, I kinda listened to what my folks did, only finding the true value in that music later on in life. However, I started developing my own style as a teenager by discovering my own music, like Seether, Linkin Park, Staind, Incubus, Pearl Jam, Alter Bridge etc. And funnily enough, as one gets older – I’m really appreciating some of the Oldies like The Beatles and Frank Sinatra. You are the frontman of metal band Because of Betrayal, what is the latest on the band, the last time I heard the band is taking a writing process break? We have our last metal show for a while on 26th April at Sundowners in Alberton. It is a Drug Abuse Charity show and features some really awesome Bands on the bill. It’s for a good cause. The last few months, those are really the only kind of gigs we’ve played – Charity and Benefit shows. After 3 years of intense gigging, we will take a breather to write and record some new material. It’s a well-needed break from the hustle-and-bustle of touring and it can only do good for us. Looking forward to the writing process and getting back into studio again.
Being in a metal band you have to scream, growl and jump around a lot, where as if it is just you and your guitar at a more chilled out venue, you can be a lot more relaxed, how do you cope to do both kind of sets and pull it off so well?
You are going to be the MC and possibly doing a solo performance for the SPCA Rocking for the Paws show being held at Brazenhead the Library on 10 May 2014, can you tell us how you feel about this show?
It’s really a Ying-and-Yang occurance for me. I absolutely love being a frontman for a metal band, jumping around and screaming/growling and having the crowd in the palm of my hand. That adrenaline rush is unexplainable and it feeds my soul, However – when I perform by myself and it’s just my acoustic and I on a Bar-stool, that makes it so much more raw and intimate – I find people also pay more attention when listening to the music in it’s natural form (probably because they can actually hear the lyrics..Haha). I really can’t choose one or the other if I had to – I just love being on stage in general and outside my “comfort zone” – That’s where one grows as a human being I think…
I haven’t been this excited about an event in a long time. I think it’s going to be amazing to see so many artists/organizations come together to fight for a good cause and see where we can help.
Has there been more opportunities as a solo performer? When it comes to live shows – It’s a lot easier to book gigs at certain venues for acoustic than it is for Metal. However, there is a healthy Metal scene and a lot of promoters around, so there’s never really a lack of Metal shows either. The difference comes in where you are more likely to get paid a set fee as an acoustic/cover artist, than splitting the door-fees at a Metal show with 6 other bands. Metal does not pay in SA unfortunately – We do it because we love it. My solo stuff is a lot more versatile and I’m able to travel where ever the road takes me. Also, getting National radio play is also a lot easier, when you play radio-friendly stuff.
Is helping animals and doing charity shows like this, something that is close to your heart? Animal Wellfare is a topic very dear to my heart. I LOVE all animals and I HATE seeing them hurt, hungry, afraid or abused in any way. It’s so sad to have to see pets put down, because there is not enough space/food at the shelters. People should really start making an effort to adopt animals in need, as well as contribute food and blankets to your nearest SPCA – Thank you Fanbase Music Mag for putting on this event – Really looking forward to it. Let’s see if we can make a difference – Atleast to the animals… Do you have any albums out yet or music we can listen to and where can we find them? I am currently in studio, recording my Debut Album. It’s all self-produced and I will be featuring a wide array of musical talent on it. From Long-Term muso buddies of mine, to professional session musicians, with all kinds of Instruments, as well as a few amazing vocalists from other bands/projects. I am really amped and proud of it so far and I can’t wait until it gets launched later this year – I think it will be an amazing album that this country will appreciate. I’m also putting together a Full, 4-piece band that will perform it live with me soon.
Do you have any social medias, how can we find them? The Usual: Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/chaznielsenacoustic Twitter - https://twitter.com/chaznielsen SoundCloud – https://soundcloud.com/chaz-nielsen Reverbnation - http://www.reverbnation.com/musician/97092 Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last messages for your fans and our readers? Thanks for having me in your awesome magazine and for encouraging people to help the SPCA provide better lives for animals out there. Thank you for caring about the music scene and artists. I would just like to encourage any musicians out there to keep believing in themselves. To persevere and keep pushing your music, no matter what people might say. Your music is Your legacy, so make sure you leave an epic one behind, for when you are not here anymore one day. Be humble, be loyal, be passionate, be entertaining… Be yourself

SPCA Rocking For The Paws Gig review
Done By Duwyne Clayton Photgraphy by Crystal Rees-Gibbs Photography We been advertising this gig for a while now and the day had finally arrived. Fanbase Music Magazine, Zone Radio, B Sharp entertainment, S.A Music News andThe Riff.co.za all came together at The Brazenhead-The Library with a host of awesome talented musicians to put on a show for the SPCA Roodepoort and SPCA Sandton. We made our way to the Brazenhead-The library and got there pretty early to set up some banners and get the sound ready, for those of you who never been to the Brazenhead-The Library in Sandton, this intimate venue boasts a nice a band room which is separate from the bar and bands get a chance to show their stuff on stage. This awesome venue is almost like an olden day Library which really gives you a homely relaxed feeling when you wine and dine there well listening to some awesome bands. Run by Jazques Crooney, he his and staff always go out of their way to make things that extra special. The awesome guys from Marshall Music West Rand was nice enough to lend us some music equipment which we used on the day, with all the music equipment set up we were ready to rock, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Murray, the sound guy at Brazenhead, who did such an awesome job. The event was dubbed SPCA Rocking for the Paws and wow this gig really was rocking. I cannot say this enough, but we have got some awesome talent in South Africa and this show just proved that. The bands which were on the bill was No Regret, Justin Serrao, State Society, The Barcode Bandits, The Carolina Bridal Party, Stone Griffin and Cito from WONDERboom fame, Chaz Nielsen from Because of Betrayal fame was our MC for the day and can I just add he did such an awesome job, if you ever looking for an MC for one of your shows, then he is the man to get hold of, not only is he not shy and handles himself well on stage as the MC, he is also a cool musician and even did a nice solo acoustic set but more about that later. (P.S there is also a cool interview in this issue with Chaz, talking about his solo career) First up was No Regret, they are such a cool band I was so excited to have them to start off the day. They did an awesome job and really rocked the venue and was a good choice to let them start the day. Next up was Justin Serrao, what can I say about this talented man that hasn’t already been said? Although he can often be found jamming with his full band called The Justin Serrao Band, today he opted to do the solo acoustic thing, but don’t get me wrong, when he takes the stage he is able to make you listen and pay attention making you think there is a full band behind him, he just has that kind of appeal and presence whilst on the stage. After a quick 15 min set up, State Society took to the stage, you will remember we featured them in the last issue and also being the first publication to feature the band with their new bassist Mike Pocock. I must say I was very excited to see what this band can do with Mike on board, and this only being his second performance with the band, I can safely say he rocked and fitted right in with the band. Having said all that about Mike I must also give so much praise to the rest of the band, every single member of that band really delivered, even doing an awesome cover of “Foofighters- Times like these” After those three great acts, how is it possible that this day could get any better with more great bands, but of course when we put on a show for our furry friends, we really try to deliver with some more awesome acts, still to come.
Our MC for the day Chaz Nielsen then took to the stage to do a solo acoustic set, as I mentioned earlier we have interviewed Chaz in this month’s issue of Fanbase Music Magazine so go read all about him there, but what I can vouch for is this talented musician is such a great performer. We normally know him as the frontman for metal band “Because of Betrayal” I am very pleased to say Chaz is so versatile that when he is drops his screaming and metal growls and replaces it with a cool chilled out solo set, this boy has everything as a musician. Mixing up his set with his own stuff and also covers, he manages to get the crowd going and singing along with him. Now how many of you know the band WONDERboom? Of course you know them, they were very big in the 90’s and is still one of the top bands in South Africa. Well we managed to secure a cool performance by WONDERboom frontman Cito. I have so much respect for Cito not only as a musician, but also as a human being. Apart from doing this SPCA show for us he had also spent his morning flea dipping and injecting animals in rural areas, really proving he cares for our furry friends in a big way and doing this particular charity is just part of the job. And wow what a great job he did, doing songs of Wonderboom, his own solo stuff and even doing a Portricken number because as he explained on stage most people don’t know Cito is actually half portricken so it was nice to see him go back to his roots. I must admit the best part of his whole set was when Cito thanked me for putting on this show and giving thanx to Fanbase Music Magazine for always supporting his career in a big way, he then dedicated a song especially for me, I don’t know how he knew this but the song he dedicate to me was my very favourite WONDERboom Song “Something Wrong”, he could not have picked a better song it was really goose “bumps” stuff.
After such an awesome Performance from Cito, and him having to rush to another gig, we got ready for the next act to take to the stage. Next up was none other than Blues/Rock band “The Carolina Bridal Party”. This band is also singed to the Fanbase Band Management, I am very happy to say they delivered and put on a rocking show as usual. What I have always liked about this band is, they actually have two lead singers in the band (Gert and Marray), often sharing the songs to do the lead vocals of each song. Playing a lot of their own cool songs they also did a cool number of the song “Bang Bang” I once read an article about the band that Shaun, their bassist, is like Flea from Red Hot Chilli Peppers but on Ritalin, and I think that pretty sums it up when Shaun takes the stage, it is just something you have to experience for yourself, between Shaun the Drummer Kyle, they have a great rhythm section which is so important to have in a band. With just one more band to take to the stage, I wondered if Stone Griffin would be a good act to have at such a venue, Stone Griffin are too loud they said. Stone Griffin are to heavy they said, and guess what, they were right, Stone Griffin were very loud, they were much heavier than the other bands, but guess what, it kind of worked out. They were the perfect band to finish of the day. I must say I really like their sound, each member really brings a good show whenever they do a gig, lead singer Jamie looks and sounds like a younger Axl Rose, when Axl Rose was still cool. This band is in your face really rocking their set and making for a rocking show. I really suggest you check them out. So that was it, 8 bands/musicians later, months of planning and advertising and we finally put on our very first SPCA charity show and I certainly hope this won’t be the last show. I’m already in plans on putting on a new show in aid for the SPCA - so watch this space. All in all it was a very successful show and we managed to make a total of R2523.70c for our furry friends, we hope this will atleast help them to get through the cold bitter winter. I would like to take this oppertuntiy to everyone who attended the show, with you you being there to support the cause and the bands, none of this would of happened, would also like to thank all the sponsors and advertisers who helped to get the word out there. If you would like to support the SPCA Rooderpoort please contact Nicole on fundraiser@rdptspca.co.za and to support the SPCA Sandton please contact Candice on spcasanpr@mweb.co.za. Every donation is always much needed and always greatly appreciated not only by the people of SPCA but mainly by the animals from this great organisation.

MAJOZI Interview done by Chantel and Tania Photography Done by: Danielle Terblanche, Simon Wilkes and Claudia Whittaker.
You might not know this but this interview isn’t the first time you have appeared in our magazine, last year we visited Cool Runnings and you where one of the bands. If I am not mistaken Fanbase Music Magazine with Ard Matthews auctioned of Botanical garden tickets and a gentle men had purchase them for R1000.00. And each of you got a lucky R500 for your night’s performance. Do you remember this? Hey so stoked. Yes I remember. It was a good night. We know Ard Matthews recorded your songs and then later that night copied a disc for you and played your music. How did it feel receiving a CD with your music on, is it the first? It was cool hearing a live recording of myself. It

Kaartjies kos xxxxxx per persoon en is beskikbaar by by www.barnyardtheatres.co.za xxxxxx
Tribute to Bob Dylan Proudly presented by STORM PRODUKTIONZ
The show was successfully launched at Atterbury Theatre on 6 June. The crowd were ecstatic about the production! They received a standing ovation and the audience wanted more! The show traces the life of Bob Dylan, and his impact on 20th century American popular music and culture. It also encapsulates Dylan’s rise to fame as a folk singer and songwriter. The show does not cover Dylan's entire career; it concentrates on the more popular Dylan songs from as early as 1961 and will feature most of the well known old favourite songs like Mr Tambourine Man, Knocking on Heavens Door and more! Featuring Ben van Zyl, Pieter Smit, Pieter Albert Jordaan, Stephen Aiken & Johnny Late. Written, produced & directed by MEL BOTES – Another STORM PRODUKTIONZ Production!
Quote from Chris van Niekerk: “WOW! WOW! WOW! What an experience, I was privileged to be able to see this production! The musicians were absolutely great, but this once again underlines the brilliance of a music master like Mel Botes to get the production on stage and “polish” it to an unforgettable night. Thank you very much! I hope it will return again at some stage! I have entered my name now on the mailing list because this show came under my attention from the flyers handed out at CSIR robot. I am glad I took one!!”
Bad Murphy article “Rising Durban rock trio, Bad Murphy, rocked Durban's Winston Pub venue on Saturday 5 April 2014. First up for the evening were Buckshot, whose blend of 70's rock n' blues went down a treat. This is one band to watch. Bad Murphy kept the momentum going. Guitarist, Dillen Hagan's, hot licks and inventive solos were a perfect foil for the strong rhythm from bassist Dave Wright and drummer Warren Dolphin. For once the Winston faithful rocked to the bands. This seasoned Durban band is recording soon. We await their new release. Durban stalwarts, The Mystery Girls, closed off the evening. For a band that doesn't perform live very often (their guitarist lives in Pretoria) their set was white hot. Whilst they were promoting their new album, Welcome to Weird Park, their song choice was a blend of older classics and new material. All in all, a great evening of original music at The Winston. I do agree that this will be a band next to be featured in our magazine soon, so go check the trio out and be sure to read all about them in our next issue. Dillen Hagan put the little review together, hope our readers enjoy.
“and in other news” Kirk Hammett reveals concrete news about a new Metallica Album In a new interview, guitarist Kirk Hammett shared that this September, the thrash legends will “buckle down” and begin cranking out a brand new record. Metallica have been prepping for the follow-up to 2008′s ‘Death Magnetic’ for some time, composing a staggering amount of riffs to build a foundation for the album. Drummer Lars Ulrich recently stated that Metallica are in the “fourth inning” of the new record’s process, which kept the buzz of excitement alive, but now, Hammett has offered some very specific plans. While speaking with Guitar World, Hammett went in-depth about Metallica’s current plans. “We totally want to make an album,” Hammett says. “But we have all these other touring commitments, and we have families now. It’s gonna be summertime soon, and it’s hard to work because the kids are out of school.” “But we have a backlog of riffs in the riff bank,” the shredder continues. “Now it’s about picking riffs out, putting them together and moving along. Later, we’ll revisit it all and see where it goes. We’ve all said to each other that September is gonna be the time when we buckle down. I know I told everyone it was gonna be last January … but that’s just the way it goes!” [Laughs] Interestingly enough, Hammett also shares that the track ‘Lord of Summer,’ which was recently released as a rough demo recording, will likely experience a guitar overhaul. “Because of everything we had going on, I didn’t have time to work out the guitar solo in ‘Lords Of Summer’,” Hammett reveals. “The solo that’s on the demo track was all we had time to do. I barely knew what I was gonna do and didn’t have time to really formulate anything. We told everyone that the song was a demo version … and the solo is really a demo version. [Laughs] If you compare the solo in the demo version to what I’ve been playing live at those South American shows, it’s a lot better and more refined now.”
Tommy Lee joins Smashing pumpkins on drums Billy Corgan revealed that Motley Crue‘s drummer, Tommy Lee would be playing drums on the Smashing Pumpkins‘ upcoming full-length ‘Monuments to an Elegy.’ This means current Pumpkins drummer Mike Byrne won’t be featured on the record, but Corgan has just released a statement explaining why Lee was recruited. After powerhouse Jimmy Chamberlin left the Smashing Pumpkins in 2009, Corgan brought in Mike Byrne, who was only 19 at the time. Byrne’s playing kept the beat on ‘Oceania,’ which the Pumpkins released in 2012, but in the studio, Byrne has been replaced by Tommy Lee for ‘Monuments to an Elegy.’ Corgan addressed Tommy Lee’s studio recruitment in the following statement: The notion to reach out to T Lee came from The Shredder, who in hearing me say ‘we really need to get someone like Tommy to play on this song’ said, “well, why don’t we reach out to him?” And let me tell you something: I’ve had the fortune of being in the room with some of the all-time greats, and when you’re that close to someone who is the best at what they do you gain insight into the way they are able to communicate to so many. Let’s call it a universal language (which music is, obviously), and in applying it with heart/soul they present intangibles that give dimension and depth to a composition which otherwise would not be as kaleidoscopic. So on flying out a few weeks ago I presented T Lee with the idea, played him all the songs that I’d worked hard to finish, and discussed the way we’d be most comfortable finding common ground in the studio. Which explains the rush to prepare the arrangements for him to drum on, and also our keeping the work under wraps; so that nothing and nobody could influence the process. I’m also happy to report that not only did we have a blast, but the 9 ‘MONUMENTS’ songs sound epic in a way that is indescribable. I guess I could toss off hyperbole after pronoun, but it would sell short what I like to call ‘Supersonic Pumpkins’; which is a descriptor in itself. Tommy hits the drums in a crushing manner, but as many fans know this is not without nuance or reaction; as he has a fantastic ear for music and plays with the songs in a means that only enhances excitement. The only other place I’ve heard this phenomena is with John Bonham of Led Zeppelin: where heavy drums can sound soft and expressive. Good company indeed! As for the connection, I first met Tommy way back in 1991 when he came to one of our shows, and through the years we’ve run into each other many times at various places. So the coupling is not as odd as some might assume, as he, like I, has pushed into embracing new technologies, electronics, etc where it pertains to making new sounds. He is a wonderful, warm person to be around, and I wouldn’t have come to him with this proposition if I didn’t trust that this was something we’d both be proud of. So we expect to finish up the drums in a few weeks, seeing as we’re in a rush to get this stuff out and oh yeah, Tommy’s got this mega-Crue tour to do. Let me also add on a personal and public level that I’m truly excited, for there’s an excitement in the music that is vital and necessary; especially when you consider what’s dying on the vine out there. I believe this is soul music we’re making, and I’m proud of who I’m stuck in the foxhole with. Attack, attack, attack… As of this posting, there’s no word on whether or not Lee will also participate on ‘Day for Night,’ another new Smashing Pumpkins album Corgan is currently working on.
RIP Pierre Joubert from Black Market Riots It’s is with a sad and heavy heart as I write this and report on the passing of yet another talented South African musician who was taken too soon. Black Market Riot’s lead guitarist Pierre Joubert was rushed to hospital a few weeks ago with the band saying on their Facebook page that he had a case of bad yellow fever, then a few days later the band was forced to announce they have to cancel any up coming shows because Pierre’s health got worse. Then on Monday 12th May the bad news hit social media that Pierre lost his fight with the disease and past away in hospital early that morning. Fanbase would like to send our deepest sympathy to Pierre family and to his band members. He is now rocking with the angels.

He’s quirky, enigmatic, and charismatic and can play a mean guitar, he’s David Meulen and he has just launched his brand new album @davidmeulen. Roodebloem studios in Woodstock Cape Town was the hosting venue for the intimate gathering of music lovers and media personnel , a perfect creative space for the whims of this very talented three piece band. A rare treat, Odd Enjinears, moving arts Project Company formed here and in Amsterdam complimented the atmosphere with weirdly wonderful moving sound sculptures. Comfortably seated on scatter cushions on the floor, guests were treated to a beautiful performance of light and sound with moving psychedelic backdrops and very catchy tunes, the likes of which will be sure to make waves in the local music scene. With influences as diverse as the Beatles, Bob Dylan and Johnny Clegg , David’s years of song writing projects have come to fruition through this well-crafted album featuring many successful collaborators such as drummer Barry Van Zyl and Dirty skirts bassist Maurice Paliaga in the rhythm sections. Sometimes melodic, upbeat and suitably dramatic, these very well written and wonderfully performed songs speak of love, life and following your dreams. The band consists of David Meulen on guitar and vocals, Kyle Dijkstra on bass guitar and Jay Latter on drums.

WENDY OLDF LIONEL BAST CAFE ROUX
FIELD AND TOS AT
Cafe Roux is a venue that is known not only for their scrumptious food, but also for ‘live’ entertainment. The last couple of years they have showcased some of the biggest names in the music industry. Saturday evening was no exception. Wendy Oldfield and Lionel Bastos were headed to our valley, specifically to Cafe Roux! To find out more about upcoming venues, check out their Facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/caferouxCapeTown – There isn’t anything quite like an intimate setting with the best acoustic sound. Cafe Roux provides both and let’s not forget the yummy food. Last year I had the opportunity, purely by chance, to see Wendy and Lionel in action at the Kommetjie Festival. I was touched by their music, as were the crowds gathered there. Lionel and Wendy have performed together countless times and the connection between the two was seen and felt by everyone present. Witnessing the culmination of their unique style and presentation is something truly beautiful to behold. Incredibly gifted artists, each unto his/her own and together they bring their creative ideas and they shine like the brightest sun. Wendy and Lionel played and performed many of their songs. They complement each other to perfection. Watching Lionel hug his guitar close, all I could think was that here is a man that plays with feeling. Lionel’s guitar is what a paintbrush is to an artist – in his hands he works his art.
His
guitar becomes an expression and outpouring of who he is. Upon doing some investigation, I found a whole bunch of Lionel’s songs that I have not yet listened to and reading through the lyrics I could see that Lionel doesn’t take his music lightly. Songs of love, loss and life are what they’re about. Lionel has just recently been asked to put together all the music for the movie ‘Konfetti’. No small wonder, as he is not just an accomplished artist, but a brilliant lyricist to boot. To find out how this came about, read the story here: http:// artandphotgraphy.wordpress.com/2014/04/17/lionel-bastos-konfetti/ Wendy has her drum and from the minute she started playing I felt like I had been transported to a forest where I was witness to some African experience. The rhythmic sound of the drum seemed to infiltrate my mind, body and soul and evoked a feeling of energy, but at the same time brought a soothing touch – a feeling of contentment. Wendy has been in the music industry for many years and her accomplishments and awards to date are too long to list here. Soundtracks for some of Leon Schuster’s movies were written by Wendy. Together Lionel and Wendy are like milk and honey to the soul. My heart felt like a sponge soaking up every last drop. Near the end of the evening there was a moment – I’m sure, that brought a tear to every eye, Wendy invited her son up on stage to perform. The
A little about Lionel - “LIONEL BASTOS is a multiple award-nominated and award winning artist/singer/songwriter and producer who has written and/or produced songs or albums for artists, in both South Africa and abroad, such as VICKY SAMPSON, WENDY OLDFIELD, COLESKE, ED JORDAN, LITTLE SISTER, CAROL LEIGH, ANDRE SCHWARTZ, YVONNE CHAKA-CHAKA (The Princess of Africa), DAVID ABATTE (for the Miss World pageant), CLOUT, BERNIE WILLIAMS, JIMMY WAGNER (Luxemburg), LEIGH MATTY (UK), TRIO RIO. THE REESPECT (Germany), JAMES STEWART, KARIN NORTJE (POP IDOL) and JEREMY MANSFIELD to name a few. As a result of that song and production he was asked by IAN VON MEMERTY to produce the CD for the musical “FIELA SE KIND” (FIELA’S CHILD) for which IAN wrote all the music and which toured South Africa to massive critical acclaim. He has released 3 CDs, all of which were nominated for SAMA’s (South African Music Awards)”. A snippet about Wendy: “Oldfield first made a name for herself on radio performing the hit This Boy with rock outfit The Sweatband in the early eighties. After much success with songs like Tonight, Shape of Her Body, This Boy and years of touring and performing, she left the group to start her solo career. Her first solo album Beautiful World set the wheels in motion for a succession of hits, including Real World, Acid Rain, Miracle and Don’t Stop Believing. Oldfield’s vocal performance on the album won her the Octave Award (1992) for Best Female Vocalist and a nomination for Song of the Year (Miracle). Oldfield branched out into other areas of composition and arrangement, writing soundtracks for commercials, film and television, during which she was nominated for an M-Net film score award in 1995. Oldfield wrote soundtracks for Leon Schuster’s Sweet and Short and There’s a Zulu on my Stoep. Her song Acid Rain was chosen as the theme song for a 180 part series Nature on Track which has been played all over the world. Oldfield moved into world music with her next album Ruby, produced by Thapelo Khomo and Lionel Bastos. Shortly after the release, Oldfield was asked to sing the South African theme for the 1996 Olympic album produced by Cedric Samson. She also performed as the support act for Wet Wet Wet that same year. Wendy has just completed her 5th solo album SUPERNOVA, independently financed by herself and produced by Robin Auld. She is back better than before performing her acoustic show around South Africa with musicians such as Lionel Bastos and Joe vander linden. Lionel Bastos – ‘Konfetti’
Lionel Bastos is a name that is not only well known in South Africa, but internationally. He is a singer, songwriter, and music producer. Did I mention a guitarist of note! Upon doing a little research I discovered that Lionel has released 5 albums, 3 of which were nominated for South African Music Awards (“SAMAs”). His second album, Simple, won Best Adult Contemporary Album in 1999. Lionel has had nominations for albums which he produced for other artists. A song on the new PJ Powers CD and 2 on the last Auriol Hays album. I was fortunate enough to watch Lionel in action last year at the Kommetjie Festival, which is hopefully going to become an annual event. Lionel teamed up with Wendy Oldfield – another big name in the industry and together they blew the crowd away with their breathtaking performance. You could literally hear a pin drop, as people stood in awe of their music. I think, having shared so many years of music side by side as artists, Lionel and Wendy share a very rare companionship, which certainly comes across in their presentation and they captivate their audience when they take to the stage. Lionel plays gigs in and around Cape Town and it sure is a treat watching his shows. His links are listed below – give his music a listen and be prepared for a beautiful experience. My personal favourite of his is ‘I’ll Be There’. Lionel’s songs are deep and touch a part of your soul. Although Lionel writes about the deeper aspects of life, he has another side – a humourous one to say the least. Lionel’s daily status updates add a certain sparkle to the day and I cannot help but have a good giggle. This is Lionel – a humble man with a quick wit and his gift of writing is always at hand. Chatting to Lionel the other day, I asked him about his involvement with the movie Konfetti, as I happened to see a photo of him with the crew. He then openly shared with me how it came about that he was involved in the movie.
Much to my surprise and delight, he told me that he had been asked to not only write all the music, but conduct all the music for the movie! I then decided that it would be great to share this with as many people in South Africa as possible. Let us as a community, acknowledge our very own gifted artists and songwriters such as Lionel and support them. In Lionel’s own words: ‘To cut a long story short, the director had known my music as I’d played for his wife’s 40th and he had my album. When he had finished filming, I played at his 40th. He said he wanted some songs for the film and felt that my song “All this cash” was the kind of song he wanted on the titles at the end, but in Afrikaans. So I went to see the rough edit and I laughed and cried and he asked me to write the whole score and that was it really! Best experience of my life’. I was as curious as a cat and decided to search youtube for the song; I found it hugely entertaining and realized no small wonder that Lionel is involved in the music! Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=v026LxxDR1s The music was also recorded ‘live’ to picture with the full band, which is very unusual in SA. Some famous musicians play on the score too and it was very exciting for Lionel to work with them. They included Willem Moller on guitar, Ariella Caira (from Sterling EQ) on cello and Rayelle Goodman (from Coda) on violin. This movie promises to be a ‘feel good’ movie with much entertainment. So be sure to get out there and book your seats folks. ‘Local is lekker’ and by supporting our very own SA musicians and artists, we not only put them on the map so to speak, but we put bread and butter on the table. A synopsis of the movie: Jean is Afrikaans and Sheryl is Jewish and they are getting married. The families are tense to say the least. The best man ‘Lukas’ has been drinking and has forgotten to confirm the band. Out of sheer desperation he books the first available singer he can find – what a boo boo! This is the bride’s old nemesis ‘Bianca’ and soon the whole wedding is
turned upside down with emotions flying. The best man has to try and bring everything together to make it a perfect day for his two best friends (which is a first for him) – he cannot even find the ring. As the movie plays out with all his efforts to get the two of them to the alter, the movie makes for a bag load of giggles and entertainment. Moments of laughter and tears are sure to ensue when watching the drama unfold. Last night I drove to Seapoint along the scenic route and looking out at the view of the sea it did wonders for my mood, which was already elevated due to the events that were about to take place. My anticipation grew with each passing minute and I excitedly drove up and parked my car. My friend and I climbed the little steps which take you up to Studio 7. After watching Michael Lowman at the CT Folk Festival held at Kirstenbosch Gardens I thought it a good idea to get to watch him play a couple more of his songs and what better place then Studio 7. Studio 7 can only be described as a private venue which gives one the exclusive opportunity of hearing ‘live’ artists in a quiet, homely venue, where people respect the artist as a creative being and as a person. With drinks in hand everyone settled down on comfy couches or cushions and I could immediately sense a hush fill the air. I can truly say that this venue is perfect in this regard, as it is small, personal and intimate.
To quote: “This must be the greatest best kept secret in Cape Town. By far the most incredible way to watch live music… this is how music was meant to be listened to …” – Cape Times. Jeremy’s voice made me think of a fire being lit on a dark cold night– a small flame at first and upon stoking it becomes a bright burning flame – sparks shooting out into the air for all to see. Words like, glowing, warm, incandescent, smoky came to mind, as the combination of his voice and lyrics bring a feeling of warmth to the heart.
STONE JETS and THE SWIFTS at THE WAIING ROOM
Earlier in the week I was listening to my all time favourite radio show, namely The Rising Gold and heard that Stone Jets were going to be interviewed and play a couple of tunes was left breathless with what I heard and they announced their upcoming show at The Waiting Room. I am a believer of kismet moments in life and this certainly was one of th I decided that a visit to the Waiting Room was in order. I was excited to see what Tuesda evening had in store. The Swifts were also lined up to perform for the evening. It was ve much a collaboration of sorts between the two bands.
If you haven’t experienced the ‘lively’ venue of The Waiting Room you have been missin out! On a couple of occasions I’ve been to watch artists perform and the acoustic sound tops. The Waiting Room has a lovely homely feel to it – a vintage and modern touch is fe when glancing around the room, from the couches to the chairs and cushions spread ou around the room. I always feel as if I’ve stepped back in time – to a place from the past where music featured regularly and the walls literally reach out and touch you with mus No small wonder, as music is a regular occurrence at The Waiting Room! There is a well equipped bar to quench all your thirsty needs.

Check out their Facebook page for information regarding all their upcoming events: https:// www.facebook.com/WaitingRoomCT Downstairs you find the amazing Royale Eatery famous for their home cooked burgers that come in all varieties and flavours. Their menu boasts a whole range of different delights. I can highly recommend the Mexican Burger, that’s if you enjoy ‘hot’. Well the time had come…camera, lights, action….Stone Jets, ready, set, go! They say first impressions count and from beginning to end I was super impressed. Given Nkanyane has a voice that can only be described as endearing, fun, touching, natural, engaging….the list goes on. Given’s voice has a warm quality that cannot help but creep into one’s heart. There is a certain place that comes from deep within Given and this is what touches you to the core. I was curious to find out how long he had been singing and when asked was told that it has been a mere two years! What a rare and God-given (‘Given’ : smiles) talent he has been blessed with! Manfred Klose, Given’s right hand man does back-up vocals and plays guitar as well as bass and keyboards. Manfred has been playing for about 11 years and started at the tender age of 14. Manfred literally became addicted to making his dream come true. Hardly doing any school work, and practicing 4 – 6 hours a day, he obtained his Degree in Audio Eningeering. Manfred also plays a few odd instruments, and has his own recording studio. Who says dreams don’t come true! All in all Stone Jets are a talented duo to watch out for. To quote the Stone Jets: ‘Together, we form an Acoustic Folk Rock style that has its tonal fingers in a lot of pies… However, one thing is certain, our live performances are a sight to see and a sound to be consumed by’. Truer words have never been spoken! After listening to their beautiful music I had to get me a copy of their EP – RIVER. Their EP features Under your Spell, Borderline, River, Tell Me (sung in 3 languages. English, Zulu and Sotho. Although the Sotho is a mixture of South and Northern Sotho it can be called Sotho) and last, but not least You’re Gone. My personal favourites are definitely ‘Under Your Spell’ and because of the diversity and pure brilliance of the song – Tell Me. All in all their music lifts your spirits and leaves you craving more. These guys deserve to be on all national playlists! To find out more about Stone Jets, go
After a little break of refreshing our drinks and catching a lovely breeze on the beautiful deck outside, it was time for The Swifts to take the stage. This trio has a tangible connection which comes across in their music. Their harmonies and moderation is superb. Derek Leisegang has the type of voice that one can listen to for hours. The Swift’s music has a soothing quality that touches you like a soft floating cloud and the silver lining to this cloud is most certainly their lyrics. There is a definite pop feel to their music – some up tempo songs to some ballads were enjoyed. Julian Taylor entertained us with his tales and storytelling which happened in sessions throughout the evening. Fits of laughter were heard around the room. He played an electric bass which was a first for me. The drummer, Rob has one of the most engaging faces, with a smile as wide as the ocean. I could see his pure enjoyment of bonding with his band members. The unity between this trio is something to behold. Upon leaving I purchased their album – THE SWIFTS – ‘awaywithwords’, which I just couldn’t resist, as their music is easy on the ear and the perfect music for a road trip. My favourite song on the CD has to be London Streets – a song about missing home and listening to it, I felt the sincerity of the words and I felt a connection. Their CD is beautifully illustrated – a true work of art!
All in all their music is dreamy, catchy, sincere and music to get lost in. To find out more about The Swifts, check out their website links below: http://www.theswifts.co.za/ https://www.facebook.com/TheSwiftsBand

FAST FORWARD FUNDRAI FOR FETAL ALCOHOL SYN Review and photos by Rene

Gerald James Clark arranged a fundraiser for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome children which took place on Sunday evening at The Barnyard Theatre, Willowbridge. His passion for horses and his heart for children spurred him into action and together he and Luna Paige are working with the Beyerskloof Faith Fund on the project of raising funds. It is so good to see people coming together, not only for their own benefit, but to give hope to the community. This is what Gerald had to say: “I observed the amazing results of the interaction between horses and the FAS (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) children. The one little girl, Abigail, stood out for me in particular. Abigail was born prematurely and was so heavily affected by FAS that the doctor predicted she would never be able to walk. I was there during a session when she was put on a horse and within a few minutes I could see her orientating herself and getting interested in her surroundings. The other day I saw her running around, dancing and laughing; she is now three years old and only four months behind the developmental phases of a normal child. What is the FASt Forward Fund? The FASt Forward Fund is an initiative set in motion by singer songwriter Gerald Clark and retailer Jade & Velvet.
The FASt Forward Fund’s main aim is to send young FAS-sufferers to programmes where they will be able to work with ponies and horses. These children (between the ages of one and six) are at a developmental stage where they stand to gain most from working with ponies and horses on both a physical and cognitive level.
We would like to thank Jade & Velvet for sponsoring the event. If you would like to find out more or make a donation, here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/pages/ FASt-ForwardFund/577692388957207 The Barnyard can seat 500 people and have an in-house pizza deli. Food platters are also available upon request. There is a full licensed bar available for all your thirsty needs. The Barnyard has a certain charm which cannot be denied. Despite being a large venue, it has a cosy atmosphere. To find out about events, here is the link: https://www.barnyardtheatre.co.za/default.aspx One of the hosts for the evening was Peter Mitchell. Peter entertained the audience from beginning to end. Peter spoke with a heavy Scottish accent and not for one minute did I suspect that he was a South African! Looking around at the crowd, I could hear and see people break into fits of laughter. Old and young were enthralled by his stage presence. Upon doing a little research on Peter, who may I add, is not just a fantastic singer, but also an outstanding comedian, I found out that he busked in Scotland for a couple of years. After being spotted on the streets he was invited to perform at various pubs in Scotland. Peter was so impressed with the pub scene that he took inspiration from this and ran with it. What grabbed me from the beginning to the end was his ability to captivate his audience with his charm and quick wit. Peter regularly gets invited to perform at various corporate functions in and around SA. Peter sang ‘The Flower Of Scotland’ to perfection and wowed all of us present with his Scottish accent. Being an entertainer comes naturally to Peter, like breathing. He was born to be on a stage. Some of the artists were Gerald Clark,
Gerald Clark is a well known artist in and around Cape Town. Gerald is such a versatile artist singing both English and Afrikaans music. His song ‘Black Horses’ blew me away when I first heard it in 2011. Watch it here – https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=E4Y7hZTfK3E To find out more about Gerald, follow him on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/geraldjamesclark
Another biggie must certainly be ‘Right Kind Of Love’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urEr7wgh328 The song was written by Luna Paige, which she performs with him. This is a fun, catchy and soulful performance by two amazing people. Gerald is not just an accomplished performer, but has a heart of gold. Bringing together all these artists to make an event such as this a success is evident of that. It was the first time I was to see Heinz Winckler and I was impressed. Heinz entered Idols and was the very first contestant to win Idols back in 2002. Heinz has come a long way since. He performed ‘Chasing Shadows’, the theme song for the Disney movie Treasure Planet. Heinz was voted Number 33 in the Heat Magazine Top 100 for 2007. Heinz’s ‘Once In A Lifetime’ reached double platinum status. It is lovely to see someone take the opportunity presented to them and turn it into a success – this, Heinz has achieved in leaps and bounds. Here is one of his songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2KNP-Ep6yk
I was keen to see Valiant Swart as he was another artist that I had to date not had the privilege to watch. Valiant brought a calm presence onto the stage. His music made me feel a certain peace and his songs were heart-warming. ‘Kraai Braai’ is one of the most entertaining songs. Valiant’s music has a ‘feel good’ feeling about it. Thank you Valiant for bringing such fun to the evening and providing medicine for the soul. Here is the link to ‘Kraai Braai’ – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVdmsjWrxIM
The lovely Luna Paige always manages to stir deep emotions with her ‘bluesy’ voice which is deep and echoes in your mind long after her performance. No matter whether it is an Afrikaans or English song – Luna has the same affect. Her voice has a beautiful lilting quality which soothes the soul. Luna is touring all around SA. To find out more about events check out her facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/lunapaige Watch her on Youtube and be get ready to be moved: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SSHDHlNkyE
Natasha Meister is like a rare bird with multi-coloured feathers, but in her case a beautiful vocal range. On doing a little research, I found out that Natasha is the only woman in Africa who is endorsed by both Fender (USA) and Lakewood (Germany) guitar makers. Natasha is certainly an exceptional performer and singer. I realized after having watched her play a couple of times, that she feels very comfortable on stage and this certainly is where she belongs. Guy Collins accompanied most of the artists for the night. I am sure Guy was born holding a guitar. Every time Guy gets on a stage he has the crowd spellbound. There is a certain something that I cannot quite place my finger on – Guy brings it every time. Guy has a unique sound that is hard to re-create. When I think of Guy I think ‘blues’ and ‘soul’ with an ‘African’ feel. Guy brings life and soul to his performance – like a calling or message for the people – a sharing of something greater and people respond. His music reminds me of a bygone era and to be able to make people feel so deep, well this is truly someone who knows and feels music with every fiber of his being. Guy Collins always manages to send shivers down my spine.
The talented background players all played their part, so to speak, making it that bit more special. The presenters for the evening did a superb job too. Last, but certainly not least was Fokofpolisiekar, who ended off the evening on a very high and energetic note. It was another first for me. From the moment they took to the stage I felt like I had just climbed onto a rollercoaster and was in for the ride of my life. From the beginning to the end they gripped us with their performance. The lead singer Francois van Coke has a certain ‘presence’ that cannot be denied. Holding nothing back, his passion and emotion are clearly visible on his face for all to see. At one stage he did a handstand on stage – from beginning to end they got the crowd going and for those that weren’t warmed up yet, they were certainly on fire by the end of this performance. This evening was one that I enjoyed with every ounce of my being. We live in a country that has some of the most creative people and we can be proud to call ourselves South African. Get out and support our local music industry. As a community, let us strive to make the difference.

How did you get into photography? It great from a small passion taking photos of tiny things here and there, but in 2012 it went wild. I met this man with a vision, Michael Naranjo who basically opened up my eyes to the world outside of my bubble world. Brining inspiration and passion into my world and allowing me to express emotions through my craft. What camera are you currently using? Currently I use a Cannon 7D along with a backup of 70D and my favourite lenses are my sigma 70-200 f2.8 and 28-70 f2.8 Why do you like Photography? I’ve never been the creative type of person that can just pick up a pencil and create a piece of art, yet always wanted to, and always had this image in my head. Through photography I can create this image and give it life, art through a different form, but art none the less.
What style of Photography do you like? My Favourite form of photography is still classic boudoir, or taking on a sensitive subject, like the focus on poverty. Focusing on the progression of emotion the viewer takes on. Where do you see yourself in five years, in terms of your photography? I would like to see myself moving into photography fulltime, definitely not photojournalism, but a well-established name with a photojournalistic approach to certain matters Who is your favourite photographer and why? I have many to say the least, but on a local basis for the growth of the music industry and his character, Sean Brand. His works are well known and for good cause
What advice do you have for upcoming photographers? The photographic industry is a difficult and tedious one to breach. It takes time, effort and a lot of networking with people doing the same thing as you. Everyone is in the same boat, and has probably been there longer than you. Network with them, learn from them and their mistakes. DON’T let people get you down. Market yourself positively AWLAYS and remember, EVERYONE is a potential client! How can people get hold of you? HOLLY & THE WOODS is Fighting Back
(photo credit: Sherene Hustler) "'Fighting Back' is a very gutsy in your face brutally honest track that will melt all the plastic pop songs that are out there at the moment. The song will bring hope to rock and rollers who traded their guitar for a keyboard." - Bouwer Bosch "Rock is Dead". Holly & The Woods doesn't agree. Keeping it loud and alternative, Holly & The Woods have been making noise as a band for over 8 years. Releasing their brand new single "Fighting Back", the first brief to producer, Dale Schnettler, was "We're not recording for radio, give this track what it deserves. The Radio who support Rock will play the track regardless". Holly & The Woods are "Fighting Back", not just with a new single but with a campaign to let Rock Fans know Rock is still very much alive. The band have seen the industry change since they first appeared on the scene back in 2006. Being fortunate enough to have supported the likes of Shaun Morgan from SEETHER, Eagle-Eye Cherry, Sarah Bettens (from K's Choice), The Ataris, Prime Circle , Wonderboom and many more on stage, they have learnt that the bands who have stayed around the longest have been the ones to never lose faith in what they do.
"Being a band is not about being the flavour of the week and then breaking up once you think you're not popular enough anymore. It's about making the music you love and getting to perform your songs live, regardless of whether there are 5 or 500 people watching you.", comments singer, Melissa Conradie. Have a listen to the new Holly & The Woods single "Fighting Back" : https:// soundcloud.com/hollyandthewoods/fighting-back "Producing Holly & the Woods was truly a great experience. The guys are truly talented musicians and really humble band. When the band approached me to produce them it was an honour as I've been wanting to record and produce the band for many years. The band came to me with the song all the words, melodies and chords. To add some edge we sat as a unit to see what direction we could move, so I felt a great energetic drum beat with lots of off sets, with cool guitar riffs, along with a running bass and thundering distorted guitars, and to top it off a powerful vocal. Wow, Melissa is truly one of the most powerful female vocalist out there. Also mixing the song was really great as the musicians played their parts really well and we spent a lot of time getting the right tones and the right chord progression, along with that energy which sticks out in the mix and to capture the personalities as if they were at a live concert. I feel the words are really powerful and have a powerful meaning behind the story.", comments Dale Schnettler from THE HIT LAB , on recording "Fighting Back" with Holly & The Woods - https://www.facebook.com/ThehitlabOFFICIAL Holly & The Woods had some industry friends give their song a first exclusive listen and here's what they thought of it: "If you like me miss the 90's and the angst that came with the songs of those days then you will love 'Fighting Back' . Great honest songwriting and I truly believe Melissa is the last female vocalist in SA that fully uses her range in rock music. Why are girls afraid to scream nowadays?"- Gareth Wilson, Southern Gypsey Queen (https://www.facebook.com/ SGQSouthAfrica) "SA's answer to Skunk Anansie. Cool tune!"- Francois van Coke, VAN COKE KARTEL (http://vancokekartel.co.za/) "After nearly a decade, Holly and the Woods are still kicking and punching well aware they carry their emotions on their sleeve. Their new single Fighting Back is essentially what you came for – feminist rage driven down 100watt guitar amps with an abrasive blend of melodic punk harmony."- Johann M. Smith, MUSE magazine (http://museonline.co.za/) "Holly & The Woods are back and fighting fit with a lekker rocking new track! Catchy and loud and looking forward to the new album \m/"- David Devo Oosthuizen, THE RIFF (http:// www.theriff.co.za/) The Music Video for "Fighting Back" is due to be filmed soon, followed by a national "Fighting Back" tour .
