owiiie We’ve got such a fantastic issue in store for you, I could even say it’s one of our best issues yet, although I say that every month so I think it’s fair to say that we are just going from strength to strength with every new issue.
Our front cover this month is awesome rock band Zebra & Giraffe, I am so excited to be featuring them in this issue, they have just released a new album called “The Wisest Ones”, you can go read all about them in Danni’s Punk Pit. Also in Danni’s Punk Pit she interviews a band who I’m very excited about. Man As Machine is a hard rock band set to do huge things in the industry. Danni also interviews an exciting band by the name of Secret Lie. What’s cool about this band is they are from Portugal, quite fitting that Danni is interviewing them seeing she Is Portuguese herself he he. Lastly Danni interviews someone very close to her heart. Her very own “big brother” Paulo de Barros, who is big into the Joburg music scene and works with all the top artists. Go check out all that in Danni’s Punk Pit.
Editors Note
We tried something a few issues ago where we allowed some readers/fans to interview David van Vuuren. After the great success of that Issue and seeing that Idols is on everyone’s lips this month, we have given the readers/ fans another chance to do the interview, this time they get to interview idols runner up from last year Mark Haze. Now I say runner up but by no means is he second best. Mark has just released a solo album called “Where Angels Dare to Fly”, and judging by that he is a man to be reckoned with. I am very excited about this next artist, Ard Matthews from Just Jinjer has just released his solo album “First Offerings” and I get to interview him as we chat about the new album, Just Jinjer and life in general. Finally I do an interview with a guy I one day heard on Zone Radio. His name is Shaun Berry and I am so amped about his music. Talking about Zone Radio, last month we got to interview the Breakfast Zone, after the success of that we have decided to interview a DJ a month, or in this case two DJ’s. This month we interview Brett Kannemeyer from the Lunch Zone and Pirate Dave Wood from the Pirate Zone. Check out these cool interviews and please go and support Zone Radio by listening in on Streaming Audio by logging onto www.zoneradio.co.za Our Togger of the Month is a lady who goes by the name of Maine Frame Photos. Go check out her awesome work. Very cool stuff!!! Did someone say competition!!!? It’s been a while since we’ve had a competition in the mag and now we sommer have two lol First one, you can win an autographed copy of the latest Mark Haze album and second one, you can win free entrance to the Riot Fest gig happening in Durban in October. So go read the mag to find out how to enter and win. I’ve been inundated with bands/musicians who’ve been asking for their albums to be reviewed in our mag. We used to review albums a few months back but we stopped due to the shortage of bands submitting their work, but I’m glad to say that we are back on track and will be starting album reviews as of this Issue. This month I review awesome albums. I’m so glad that I get to hear such great music and now I am going to be able to share it with all of you. Go check them out. That is it for this jam packed issue. I hope you enjoy it, thanx to all the people involved in getting this mag out there. To Danni, you are my right hand lady when it comes to the mag, I’m so glad to have you on board. To Marisa Horn who I can always count on to help with the mag when needed, thanks so much, you are awesome. To my girlfriend Crystal Rees-Gibbs who helps out in so many ways towards the mag, whether it is getting me bands to interview, doing photography skills at gigs we cover and also helping out in the design of the mag, thanks so much, I love you lots, you are my rock and shining star. Last but not least to my awesome Mom who does the designs and puts the mag together for me, thanx soooooo much. I really appreciate it and love you very much. Wow how lucky am I to have all these women on my team! Enjoy the read! Duwyne

OK picture this, a young teenager who idolises a certain band or musician. A few years later in his late 20’s that same teenager gets rid of the braces and pimples and gets to interview that same musician he grew up idolising. That’s the dream I’m living now. It will be an understatement to say I’m so excited about this interview. Ard Matthews and Just Jinjer have been my inspiration for most of the things I’ve done music wise, even starting this magazine. I’ve always in the back of my mind wanted to interview Ard Matthews. I got to love my job, I’m so blessed and lucky. Ard Matthews is the front man for South African rock band Just Jinjer. They took the world by storm with their albums going platinum in South Africa and even making a name for themselves overseas in places such as LA . The band is currently taking a break giving them time to work on solo albums. We chat to Ard Matthews about his solo album “First Offerings”. We also talk to him about Just Jinjer and generally being a musician. Check out this interview. Thank you to Ard for doing this interview, you have made my year. Enjoy the read peeps!!!
What is the latest with Just Jinjer, are you guys still together or are you all concentrating as solo artists only now? We are on a break at the moment. We have all been concentrating on our solo careers and endeavours and it’s actually been good for us. At the beginning of the year I told the band that I would not be performing live any more until we have a new album to offer fans. It was a professional decision based on the fact that I would not allow myself to perfom the same set and songs any longer. I believe the fans deserve better and we (the band) need to set standards like that if we’re to continue.
Speaking of solo albums, you have currently just finished your solo album “First Offerings”. What can people expect from this album compared to what you have done with Just Jinjer?
Thanx so much for doing this interview for Fanbase Music Mag Ard, it’s really is a dream come true for me, where did it all start as a musician? I started imitating the voices of Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong and Elvis at about 13/14 years old. I won a talent show competition soon after and received a guitar as a prize plus 1 lesson. After the first lesson I asked my Mom to sell the guitar as I was not interested at all. Only picked it up again in matric when I discovered there was money to be made from being a one man band .
Did you come from a musical background? Not at all. There was very little music in my house. Both parents were extremely naturally talented at piano though, and I am actually currently recording an EP of my Moms gospel songs. Turns out she is a brilliant writer. Never too old to start right? :)
How does it feel playing for such an awesome successful band like Just Jinjer, you guys took the South African music industry by storm? It is such an honour that people think that of us. I guess in a way what we did was pretty cool but life is all about progress so I try to concentrate on the present as much as I can rather than languish on the successes of our past.
Having been the predominent songwriter in Jinjer, fans may hear quite a lot of similarity in songwriting style. The main difference will be that, having played all the instruments myself, it definitely is nowhere near as polished as it would have been had the other boys played their bits on it. The main thing that exudes from this record is complete freedom. I didn’t consult a single person or take a vote on anything and the result was a very liberating feeling for me. I needed this escape.
Where did you come up with the name of the album? (First Offerings) I actually first thought of it while I was living in LA. I thought the title would be slightly ironic seeing as though, while it may apply to my solo career, it is far from my first offering in the industry.
Listening to the album, which is great, I can hear a lot of songs about love and life, where did you get your inspiration for the writing of the album? Funnily enough, I get ALL my inspiration from love and life. I am a hopeless romantic at heart yet I suck at relationships. It’s a bit of a hairdresser-can’t-cut-his-own-hair scenario with me...
What was the process like for writing the album, did it take long to record and work on?
Finally what does the future hold for Ard Matthews?
I bit off a lot more than I intended to chew when I set myself the challenge of recording everything myself. This was definitely a contributing factor as to why it took a LOT longer than I had wanted it to take. All in all I only spent about 2 months of actual work time on it, but it’s the noise of what happened in my life in between it all that really got in the way of my focus. There was definitely a time that I was concerned I may never complete it.
Who knows to be honest. All I can say is that I will continue to write and perform so long as I am blessed to be able to. Anything else that happens along the way will only be icing!
Apart from the whole album being awesome, I got to say “One day my lover” is one of my fave songs on the album, what is the story behind that song? Ha, thank you, it’s also one of my faves. It’s funny cos, once again, there was no-one in particular that I was thinking of at the time. In fact, I was actually super ill with flu at the time and was so bored of lying in bed that I forced myself to get up and hit the record button. ‘One Day My Lover’ and ‘Time Over Wine’ are both products of where my head was at that night. Both of them were written on bass guitar.
Who are some of your musical influences? Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Led Zepellin, Hendrix
Who would be your dream collaboration? I think if I ever got to play just the triangle with Radiohead, I would be done.
As a musician do you still get nervous on stage? I sure do, especially after the Anthem blunder. That combined with a bit of age has made it quite interesting before I get on stage. It’s an obstacle I never used to have before.
Do you have any rituals before going on stage? Nah, I always just make sure I hug the band and remind us all how lucky we are to have this much fun.
You play guitar and have an awesome voice, and have been known to play drums, what other instrument can you play? Recently Bass. I’m in love. I also tinker about on the piano, but only just enough to write songs. I enjoy the Cajon drum too.
If you could have written any other song from any other musician. Who and what would it be? All In Love Is Fair – Stevie Wonder
How can people get hold of the new album First Offerings? It’s available in all reputable music stores in SA and it is also available directly from my website www.ardmatthews.com for download in ANY quality, right up to lossless format :)
Thanks so much for doing this interview Thanks for your interest. Peace

“and in other news! “ Guns n Roses Euro lotto winner wants to
re-unite the original Guns N Roses line up!!! A man by the name of Adrian Bayford, who won £148 million in the EuroMillions lottery draw, has said he would love to spend some of that money reuniting the original line-up of Guns N' Roses. Bayford, who runs a music shop, said his dream would be to reunite the rockers and would happily spend some of his newly acquired fortune on making it happen. Of the line-up that recorded 1987's 'Appetite For Destruction', drummer Steven Adler was fired in 1990 and guitarist Izzy Stradlin quit the following year. Five years later Slash quit and was followed out the door by bassist Duff McKagan in 1997. The Current line-up was reformed by the only original member Axl Rose but both McKagan and Stradlin have joined the new line-up of the band onstage at various events but I somehow doubt Ex guitarist Slash would ever re-join with ex band mate Axl Rose as they have not spoken and performed together in almost 20 years. I don’t think any money in the world ever change that, unfortunately but here’s hoping.
Freddie Van’Dango Debut album “TONIK” to be released in September 2012. (Rhythm Records) Freddie Van'Dango is a South African musician who is best known for having been in the top ten in Idols SA 2011. His debut album, "TONIK", will be released September 2012. The album was produced by SAMA Award Winning producer Dan Roberts. Rolling Stones SA magazine named Freddie “The Idols Renegade": “Freddie's voice "is expansive and undisciplined - in the best possible way. He currently resides in the house of Van'Dango (a house filled with similar minded artists and musicians) in Melville and spends most of his time composing, writing and recording new and interesting, emotionally charged, rock and jazz influenced music. Freddie says: “Dancy Rock, Pop and Romance with killer melodies are what you can expect from this CD. The kids like it. I really like the work of Charles Bukowski. His work served as inspiration for quite a few ideas and images on my debut album. Gerald Clark album launch goes on….. Gerald Clark recently underwent surgery to remove a growth that has been obstructing his vocal cords, effectively leaving him with only two-thirds of his full vocal ability for the past two years. The veteran of the SA blues scene received the prognosis just as he was preparing to launch his new album, Black Water, alongside a music video of the title track. The Black Water launch tour, which had been scheduled for September, was cancelled after Clark's physician issued strict orders preventing him from performing for the next three months. Fans can however rest assured that the album release went ahead as planned at his benefit concert on the 19th of August. Friends and colleagues all decided to pitch in and do an all-star benefit concert to help raise funds for Gerald Clark’s medical bills and loss of income over the next couple of months. Gerald is expected to be back in full swing by the end of October and he plans to reschedule his national Black Water tour for November/December. The Black Water song recently received the full Yesterfang music video treatment, fans can expect a stop-motion video crafted by this award-winning Stellenbosch animation set who recently received top honours at the 2012 MK Awards and is now also in the running for an international animation award. New additions on the album include, ‘As the crow flies’, the foot stomping song that Clark recorded in collaboration with Theo Crous for use in the 2011 Volkswagen Amarok TV ad campaign, and ‘Marry me’, the theme song used for SA’s Wedding Week 2011. Originally composed by Gerald, ‘Marry me' is very distinctive in style and gives audiences a taste of what is to come in Clark's future ‘Country Soul’ venture.

You are all in for a real treat now my lovelies. We have Zebra and Giraffe featured in this issue!!! Please try and contain yourselves. ;) You will find out all about them and their new album. Happy reading!!! :D xxxx Interviewed by : Daniela de Almeida Photographer : Crystal Rees-Gibbs and Ravi Panchia
Please tell us all about your new album. Our new album is called 'The Wisest Ones' and is Zebra & Giraffe's 3rd studio album; it's also the 3rd album where we've worked with producer Darryl Torr. As a band, the album came about at quite a transitional phase in our career as mid way through writing and recording our drummer and bassist decided to leave
He's actually the only original member left apart from me! Alan also manages the band along with me and he manages Openroom Productions, which is the studio we record at. Mike Wright started as our keyboardist in 2010 during the recording of our 2nd album 'The Inside'. He's originally a drummer but is a multi-instrumentalist so
the band. Although we parted on good terms it was still tough to lose 2 members and 2 friends. The remaining members, Mike, Alan and myself decided to use the change as a new start so-to-speak, and headed back into the studio and finished up the album as a 3-piece with Mike moving from keys to drums and myself and our producer Darryl handling the bass duties. Sonically and lyrically I think the album is a lot heavier and darker than our previous material and in many ways reflects more of my musical influences as a teenager. For me it's the strongest work we've done and the album as a whole really works for me. I'm really proud of it.
he filled in on the keys and backing vox. When Darren decided to leave the band Mike jumped at the opportunity to play drums. He recorded 8 out of the 11 tracks on the new album and has really brought something fresh and exciting to the band. Mike also runs a studio called Gloryvale.
Can you give us some insight into each member of the band. Well Zebra & Giraffe started out as just me, Greg Carlin. I wrote and recorded the 1st album 'Collected Memories' on my own and then found band members after that. Alan Shenton (lead guitar) was the first guy I found and he's been a member ever since.
How do you deal with bad press? I've stopped reading most press to be honest. It's always tough to deal with people bashing you down when you've put so much effort into something you love. I get that not everyone will like what we write and that's okay. I just focus on the reasons why I do it and that's because I love writing and recording music, and I love playing those songs to people that love them to. We're really lucky to have made a career of it!
What has been your craziest moment on stage? I think back in 2009 when we played Cokefest - I remember walking onto that stage at sunset and seeing 35000+ people and feeling like I was in a dream. That was a crazy moment I'll never forget.
When is your next gig? We are doing a nationwide tour in September and we'll be all over SA! Our first show is in Potch on the 5th September at Memphis and we end off the tour in Cape Town at Mercury Live on the 28th September.
As a band, who are your biggest inspirations?? Personally my biggest inspirations range from artists to writers. I love David Lynch the film director. He inspires me in many ways and many scenes in his movies have inspired me to write songs. I also love the writing of Bret Easton Ellis and Jonathan Franzen. Musically I have always loved Marilyn Manson, Deftones and NIN. They're the bands I grew up with. I still listen to them a lot and the new album was influenced heavily by their sound.
Why is music so important for the youth these days? I think music has always been important to the youth. Music acts as an escape, as a rebellion. Songs become the soundtrack to special moments or periods in our lives and music can define your identity growing up and shape your path. When I was growing up, listening to my favourite band helped tremendous amounts when I was confused and questioning. Lyrics helped me understand situations and the music helped me escape. These days it feels like music is a little bit more disposable.
“nowadays the youth engage a lot more with live music
The value of music, of the MP3, is almost nothing because it's all available for free and anyone can get it. Nowadays the youth engage a lot more with live music and they express their commitment as a fan by coming to shows and buying a t-shirt rather than buying the album. How do you think your music impacts SA? I can't really say how our music has impacted SA as a whole. I think we definitely try to raise the bar for ourselves each time we record a new album and hopefully that pushes other guys to do the same. It's the way an industry grows - by constant competition and everyone setting their standards higher each time they perform or record.
What is your favourite song to perform? I think 'The Knife' will always be the best because it's our most successful track and one of my favourites. People sing along and it's a great feeling to have the crowd singing back lyrics you wrote
Name 3 things that you each cannot live without? My iPhone, a visit to the bush every so often, coffee + wine!
Coffee Shop Poetry‌ I guess that our first kiss was a goodbye kiss, How could I have thought it would materialise into something more? Maybe all the days that we had are gone forever, But the memories comfort me throughout the empty nights, I suppose it is all done because I won’t see you around anymore. I cannot help but think of our previous times together, The evenings filled with fights, lust, jealousy and a whole lot of love. How can I live without that? You are my life. I know about all the other women, I know what you do behind the scenes, But I wish you could understand that when you are all done with that, Or even if you continue to do it for the rest of your life, I will be right here waiting for you, To comfort and love you, I will wait for you till the end of time, So for now, You go your way, I go my way, And I will pray every night that someday we will meet again, So that maybe you will find it within yourself to allow yourself to love me. This silence is what fills me up with nothing, No more laughs, Just these photographs that are everything, The thought of the touch of your skin is unbearable, I will look back, In hopes to be able to turn around and see you standing waiting for me, To have a future with you, The love of my life. The dangerous man that nobody approves of, The man with the rosary and gold chain, The man who gambles, The man who takes risks, The man who loves to womanize, My man, My perfect man, Who I will always love.
I am particularly proud to show off this band, Secret Lie, because they are Portuguese juuuuuuuuuuuust like me!!! Please go check them out on Facebook and see what talent you can discover from all parts of the world! xx
Interviewed by : Daniela de Almeida
What is the Portuguese music scene like? Portugal is internationally known in the music scene for its traditions of Fado, but the country has seen a recent expansion in musical styles, with modern acts from rock to hip hop becoming popular. There are many good bands and music. Portugal music scene is not only FADO for sure
People generally think of Fados at the mention of Portuguese music, was it hard to break away from that stereotype? Fado is part of the musical roots of mainly Portuguese cities like Lisbon and Coimbra, is quite easier to export the fado internationally because it is a genre unique and singular of our country. That does not mean that it is the only type of successful music genre in our country, on the contrary, especially among our youth who listen to lots of rock, we have a series of rock festivals with major foreign figures and are always sold out. Fado is an intimate style, it is rare to hear it in a stadium or a festival. In Portugal is simple for other musical genres to succeed, abroad it is much more complex.
How did you start your band "Secret Lie" and why did you decide on an English name? I’ve been a member of another band for the past 13 years, and five published albums, the band is called the "Corvos" and is an instrumental band and this is where the desire to add vocals to the music started for me. I personally invited each member of "Secret Lie" and did a voice test to find the perfect voice to fit the musical style I was looking for. Sara stood out among all others, she was only 16 when she took the test, and the empathy was immediate. The songs were already in an advanced state of composing so we started recording our debit album entitled “Behind the Truth in the studio roughly about one month after that.
When I was in the process of composing the album, I always imagined the voice melodies sung in English later on we experimented by singing the songs in Portuguese, but the vocal melodies did not make sense because they have not been created in that way. So if the lyrics are in English, it made sense that the band name should also be in English.
What type of audiences do you attract? All kinds. We know that this kind of music is more for young people but we want to share it with all ages.
Where would you all like to travel?
Is it important to strive to be different as a band? Yes it is important, I think all the original music itself is unique because it flows from the heart and mind of each individual. The fact that we have two unusual instruments in the band (violin and cello) immediately provides another approach and musical vision. It’s almost impossible not to be influenced in some way or other, but the art is to learn to transform these influences into something uniquely your own.
Traveling, meeting new cultures, it is definitely the best. We want to go everywhere where we are desired or requested, for example your country would be an excellent choice. ;)
What languages do you sing in? Entirely in English except one section of a song that has a guest "Poeta de Rua ", also our producer, and he sings in Portuguese.
Who writes all your songs and what inspires them? I write all the songs. When I compose a song it has to be something special, something that conveys feelings and inspire people who hears it, something that makes us dream or reflect, that transmit energy or peace, that make us forget the everyday harsh call of reality . The inspiration is in every moment of our lives, because being alive is already in itself an inspiration.
When do you practise? As we all have other projects and live in different cities, Sara is still studying, she’s 17 now, so it’s not always easy to get together , but the willpower and love for the band is so great that we make every effort to meet and rehearse.
What part of Portugal are you located in? Majority in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal.
Do TV and press support you there? We do not have any reason to complain, we have had the full support of the press.
What is the best part of being in a band besides the groupies?? ; The best part is without doubt our fans, the unconditional support we receive from them, without them the music would be worthless.
“being alive is already in itself an inspiration”
How did you come up with your name "Man as Machine"? We found it in one of Xavier’s psychology textbooks, and really liked the sound of it.
Who are your biggest inspirations? Inspiration comes from day-to-day experiences. You have good days, you have bad days. Some days make you want it more. It’s inspiring to see people living their dreams, or chasing them on their own terms. If you were referring to bands, the list is endless. It’s constantly growing and evolving. We love listening to new music.
Tell us about each member of the band? Norden is a former hair-growing enthusiast, guitar player, and boat skipper. KJ likes to jump off buildings, roll on the ground, is currently sick, and dabbles as a drummer-boy. Parum Pah Pah Pum. Xavier, in a cruel twist of fate, progressively lost his mind while trying to find someone else’s. He also plays bass. Rob, spellchecked this whole interview onehanded. His office smells of leather-bound books and rich mahogany. He also sings.
How did you all meet? Three of Man as Machine's members were the winners of a band-based competition back in '08. We cut ties with the association, but the band carried on. KJ joined our line-up midway through '09 and that's how it's been since.
What is the best thing about performing? To be on stage is the reason we all got into this business in the first place. We enjoy seeing people enjoy the musical art we create.
Have you had any odd fan moments? We had a fan come up to us during drum soundcheck. He said that KJ didn’t need the rest of us, because he could do it all on his own. He also said… ”You enjoy your meal like you’re at home alone. But I’m there with you.” …Awkward.
What is your ultimate goal as a band? We would like to have a long and fruitful career. Having fun, picking fruit.
“we would like to have a long and fruitful career”
Is anyone superstitious? Norden believes he could laugh himself to death if ever bitten by a beetle. The rest of us… no.
When is your next gig? When is this coming out?... Hahaha! The easiest way to keep up to speed with Man As Machine’s gigs is to follow us on Facebook and Twitter. Facebook: Twitter: Soundcloud: YouTube:
manasmachine @ManAsMachine_SA manasmachine manasmachinetv
What CDs are playing in your cars at the moment? Xavier: Eminem - ‘Recovery’. KJ: Local loop artist, Jeremy Loops’ EP. Norden: Alter Bridge – ‘Blackbird’. Rob: Sting – ‘The Soul Cages’.
PAULO de BARROS
So want to see what the Music industry is really like? Well here is a day in the life of my brother...who really is one of the most talented people I know! Enjoy Paulo's interview! Love you bro!xx
Interviewed by : Daniela de Almeida
Who are your inspirations? I'm very old school...Jimi Hendrix, Clapton, The Doors, Stevie Ray Vaughn etc...then "Newer School" I suppose bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, STP (Stone Temple Pilots)...Rock n Grundge.
Describe your typical day! Absolute chaos, hehehe! Well, usually up by 05h30 and in the gym from 6-7am. Work the rest of the day either: Recording with various artists (I work with George Avakian in his newly built "Beatstar Studio", some good times been had and still LOTS more to come!) Editing music and/or video's (I do video, from filming to final mix) Filming whatever events and/or activations are on for the week and weekends etc. (Takes up a lot of time coz you have to travel) Building sound systems and organizing events (doing site recce's for sound, stage, lighting, AV etc).... Then after that I train at East Rand BJJ from arnd 6pm until 20h30-ish, then home, eat, sleep OR get some work done in my home studio (depends). I'm pretty much busy 24/7
What got you interested in music? I can't say that I was ever NOT interested in music, but, what sparked my love for playing, was when I got my first guitar at age 8. (I didn't quite know what do to with this thing, but I knew I wanted to play it.)
What's your greatest achievement? Depends on what you see as a "great achievement" hey. I've written songs that have made it to number 1 on some radio stations, Top 10 on others, but for me that doesn't count as anything great.
For me, I guess my "greatest achievement", would be learning how to play instruments like I can, drums, percussion, bass, guitars, keys. I love making music!
What is the craziest thing you have ever done? I'd tell you if I could remember. I'm sure there were witnesses that got away.
How long did it take you to play EVEN better than Santana??(Yes I'm bias;)) LoL! You ARE bias indeed! But I can't say that there's any 1 musician "better" than another. We all have our own "feelings" and emotions that we bring through in the way we play and the genre's we produce. I definitely learned a lot from listening to his tracks and performing his songs on stage, but as for being "better". I'm still learning.
Do you have any advice for up and coming musicians? Give credit where it's due. Stay humble.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? Uhmmmm.....still alive n kicking?! Hehehe! Well....hopefully I'll have a few albums out with various artists, including my own. I'd like to have a TIGHT band together. I'd like to be married to my beautiful fiancĂŠ and have a nice place to call "home" together (with a decent home studio, of course...) I'd like to be known as a reputable producer who's nice to work with and "gets" the music I'd like to have left my mark and made a difference to the world and this "music industry" I find myself in!

What do you like about Zone Radio? Zone Radio has always been my refuge, like a safe house and a place you go to when you experience certain situations that one has no control over. Once you are behind the mic the music sedates you and the interaction between you as a presenter and the listeners is the most amazing thing.
What made you get into radio?
Full name: Brett Wayne Kannemeyer
I always wanted to be involved with sound, running a sound desk and producing shows. The idea of running a studio and making sure things flow like they should was like a dream come true! Being a presenter was like a “No Ways” thing to me. Like there was “no way” I’m going to sit behind a mic and talk to people I can’t see. I was then asked to stand-in for someone, shattered nerves and all. First show I did was the best thing since finding out that warm water comes from a geyser and not The City Council. Then I gave all of this thought and realised that I love music and the way it makes me feel, when I say “Music” I mean the classics 50’s 60’s 70’s 80’s. When things were very basic and when there was not much technology. To be honest music has and will always play a role in our lives. Combining it with an onair personality, you are sure to put a smile on someone’s face. That’s when I took the opportunity and never looked back. With this in mind I wanted to be the person on the other side making sure the listeners receive an adequate amount of each element. music and personality.
Nick name: Beanie Brett
What’s your fave genre of music?
Occupation:
I would say Punk Rock, anything I can bang my head to and feel on top of the world with. Weird, I know.
Studio Manager/Presenter
Your show name and time/day: The Lunch Zone Monday – Friday 12-3pm
What would be your dream play list if you had to play your top 10 songs of all time? Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb Thin Lizzy – Still In Love With You Billy Idol – Rebel Yell Budgie – Breadfan Def Leppard – Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad Deep Purple – Highway Star Metallica – Nothing Else Matters Jimmy Eat World – Hear You Me Oasis – Stop Crying Your Heart Out Janis Joplin – Ball and Chain
If you weren’t in radio, what would you be doing? I know it sounds ridiculous and don’t laugh at me but other than radio, I’ve always wanted to be a Secret Agent.
Now is your chance to sell your show for Zone Radio. Tell us why we should tune into your time slot...123 go!!!? The Lunch Zone offers listeners a wide variety of music. From Hard rock to Mozart, OK maybe I’m pushing it a bit but that’s more or less the picture I’m trying to get across. There’s lots of humour, I tend to keep a conversation with myself on air. Yes I am perfectly normal. Hahaha! The show is purely focused on the listeners, they request a song and it get’s played as soon as possible. There are also interviews with extraordinary guests. So tune in at 12noon SA Time and find out for yourself.
Zone Radio is the best radio station….why? We play music that you never get to hear at all, like seriously who plays “Alice’s Restaurant”? the answer to that would be Zone Radio. The listener has control of the play list and the interaction with the presenter and listeners has no restraints. We care for every listener and make sure that they are happy at all times. Not only our listeners but musicians and people who would like to be on board as well. Zone Radio is a world on its own! And a world we wish the “real world” could be like...even just a bit.
Any last words for the readers and your listeners? Even though Zone Radio is not the biggest station in the country, our staff and presenters have the work ethic of a world class business. I know that things don’t just happen overnight and that hard work pays off at the end. We will get there. Your support and encouragement have always been the fuel to our flames. I would just like to thank each listener and person for the support. With you on our side, we can inevitably become what we set out to achieve. Whether a billion Rand radio station or a just a mic in a garage. We will never stop being grateful to you.

What do you like about Zone Radio?
Dave Wood
The commitment of all the DJ’s and staff and the exposure of fantastic local musicians. The passion that every DJ and staff has, helps to make Zone Radio the success it is.
Nick name: The Pirate
Occupation: I work for the City of Cape Town and Pirates Pub & Grill DJ as well as being a Zone Radio DJ.
Your show name and time/day: The Pirates Zone, Mondays & Tuesdays 21h00—2h00
What made you get into radio? I’ve been a mobile DJ for about 30 years but always thought about radio. My good mate the Uni, phoned me and wanted me to do a slot on Zone Radio. As I am always at Pirates on Monday & Tuesdays we decided to broadcast live from there.
What’s your fave genre of music? I love all types of music. Put it this way, I love all genres of music except opera (when they start singing) and some of the old jazz musicians when it sounds like each musician is doing their own thing. Not even sure if they are playing the same song, but it all seems to come together at the end.
What would be your dream playlist if you had to play your top 10 songs of all time? There are so many songs out there that I love so this is not going to be easy. I am going to list 10 songs in no particular order as I love them all. The songs are : Deep Purple— Perfect Strangers, Jimi Hendrix—All along the watchtower, Sanata— Evil ways, Eric Clapton—Cocaine, Breaking Benjamin—Forever, Gotye—Someone that I used to know, The Killers—Mr Brightside, Counting Crows—Mr Jones, Pink Floyd—Comfortably Numb, U2—With or without you. I could go on and on. I also have a serious passion for the 80’s.
If you weren't in radio, what would you be doing? Unfortunately, I would continue working my normal day job, and with Pirates every Monday and Tuesdays, but would seriously miss the listeners who tune in from all over the world and chat to me while I’m playing the music. I’ve met some fantastic friends out there over the internet and hopefully that friendship will continue.
Now is your chance to sell you slot of the show on Zone Radio—tell us why we should tune into your timeslot …. 123 go !!!!! The Pirates Zone is a mixture of music, depending on who is listening and who is in the Pub at the time. The music that is generally played is Rock, Pop, Reggae, some Jazz, some R&B and music from 2000 and 2012. Hopefully music for everyone who is either there or listens on Zone. I love playing huge amounts of local music which I’m very passionate about. I also try and play the odd comedy slot and also some guessing games like TV Themes and Movie Themes.
Requests are very welcome at all times. Even for listeners to pop in to Pirates for a visit and a drink or just to say hello.
Tell us why Zone Radio is the best radio station? I think we are the best radio station out there because as our slogan states, “WE PLAY THE MUSIC THAT YOU WANT TO HEAR”. That to me is extremely important. Most radio stations play the music that they think you want to hear. Also most of the new local artists don’t stand a chance of having their material heard unless you are someone famous. We will play your music regardless of who you are, and let me tell you, we have come across some damn good local musicians out there. The fantastic vibe the listeners and DJ’s have is awesome. Together with the constant bantering and teasing that goes on the Facebook page is amazing.
Any last words for the readers and your listeners? I personally would like to thank Uni for giving me this chance to be part of his dream for Zone Radio. Since day one I have had a blast meeting all these amazing youngsters who the Uni has coached into becoming the fantastic presenters they are today. As for the listeners out there, sending in requests and posting their comments and when one is ill they are always there to comfort us, people like Diann Brown, Colleen Grove, Devin Corney, Mignon and Otis and to everyone else out there, a huge THANK YOU from the Pirate.

Spogweni Music Festival 2012
SPOGWENI -A SUCCESS! The Spogweni Music Festival took place from 9-12 August - just outside of Ballito on the KZN North coast and was , to all intent and purpose, a tremendous success for both artists performing and the smaller, intimate group of festival goers who attended. All in all, the event was a “party of note and a thoroughly weekend with a feast of quality acts.” The goal was achieved! The musical experience was unique and there is already a loud call out for the event next year, from audience as well as the beyond happy bands and artists. “Spogweni Music Festival 2012 can be seen, in effect, as the first festival this year. There is a completely new team of professional co-ordinators who have a passion to ensure this potential musical jewel runs its course the right way, gaining the deserved and necessary credibility not only amongst festival goers and artists, but potential sponsor as well -slowly, slowly catching the monkey. The main goal this year, from the coordinators point of view, has been to set the platform for the proposed annual events of the future and more importantly to ensure that the artists get paid this year! , “says Publicity Director Tanya van Agthoven Marais. “The artists and bands are a business in their own right and the policy of the Spogweni team moving forward, is to always how this respect. Some artists have already been paid in full, some with goodwill deposits and others have contractually agreed to certain dates.” SPOGWENI MUSIC FESTIVAL 2012 rolled out on time and beautifully despite the trepidation and fear of directors John Skuy, Nicole Couto –Leite, Denny Bremner and Gary Roodt as the days preceding were peppered by some of the regions coldest and wettest day’s .Come Thursday 9 th Aug- the weather turned and was unbelievably favourable until it turned slightly on Sunday. “The festival goers were there and although not huge and overwhelming crowds, the numbers were solid and a massive improvement on any one day in comparison to the entire run last year. Without a doubt, “says Festival Director John Skuy. “ Admittedly ,Sunday could have had more people to be sure : that would have been nice for the event and performers, but the windier times around lunch time also didn’t help as people packed up to go much earlier,” Skuy says. Also in keeping with our plan to be smaller and more intimate with an up- close-and-personal approach, we may consider reducing the event to a two day affair, who knows but these are all things we as event coordinators must be open to and pay attention to and do all we can to ensure the absolute and ultimate successnot ever trying to compete with any other festival at all .” he adds with a smile that they will also be more selective with their food stall holders next year, making sure they aren’t the type to have a personal ‘domestic’ on the spot, pack up in anger and one disappear into the afternoon light complete with food, utensils and money !” Highlights of the festival? Very hard to say any one was more than the other – the entire selection had its merit and unique style and top calibre: from the emerging bands like New Hysteria (who have since got 2 bookings from their appearance), Electric ARC and the young child ensemble Undivided Roots, to the accomplished acts like Alter Irving, Boulevard Blues, dynamic Tim Wells Blues Band and the master on guitar, Albert Frost. The Jack Mantis Band held everyone captive with their unusual almost ethereal pop sounds, on Sat Rise and DJ Martin had the tight party dancing in the moonlight till the wee- wee hours, Sir Walrus Band blew people
away with their fresh sounds and in my opinion ,are currently the “ pride of Durban “ ( Tanya van Agthoven Marais) Whilst artists like Toni Rowland , Shomon, Josie Field , Guy Buttery and Nibs v der Spuy presented their usual polished acts, while one to watch is most definitely Seagreen Blues -jaw stopping . The singer-songwriter from the sleepy town of Bethlehem in the Freestate – Brendon Shields – entertained festival-goers with his unique songs and sincere lyrics. He shared his exquisitely rendered tales of love and survival in his “pre-recessions shoes” as he describes it in his first single “Rockstardom”. Krystle T was a wonderfully pure sound with obvious tones of a successful career in the pipeline and it was quite a joy to see how Tammy Saville stepped up to support her friend Krystle T on stage that night with a voice to blow your mind…sadly though the next day, Tammy’s voice had given in to the throat bug which is going down but fearlessly she stepped on stage professionally and this time Krystle T stepped in to carry her session through. But the cherry on top, was braved by Christie Rash of The Arrows, who in all seriousness should of cancelled their gig on Friday night, due to a seriously damaged leg injury, but as consummate professionals, Pam Myburgh (lead singer) and Christie took the attitude of the show having to go on and by rearranging the floor plan, placed their guitarist on the drum riser where he could also play the foot pedal and Christie in obvious pain – did a marvellous job on drums lower down the stage. The show was a success .The show goes on. See you all next year – bigger perhaps, but still with the same quality of fun, professionalism and party and the organizers have only two kinds of people to thank: The artists and the festival goers who gave this event its deserved trust second chance and respect to the new organizers! SHAUN BERRY I first came to know of Shaun Berry on Zone Radio when one morning I was listening in and he was the studio guest. After hearing his music I knew I was hooked and a fan. To my surprise this talented singer is already about to release his 3rd album, how can I have not heard of him. Well I can tell you I am glad I have now because he is defo a musician to be watched as he is going to be making big things in the music industry. Thanx Shaun for doing this interview. Enjoy the read!!!
FIRST OF ALL SHAUN THANKS FOR DOING THIS INTERVIEW. IT REALLY IS AWESOME FEATURING YOU IN FANBASE MUSIC MAG. Thank you for the opportunity.
WHERE DID IT ALL START AS A MUSICIAN? DID YOU COME FROM A MUSICAL BACKGROUND? I started pretty late, think I only picked up a guitar at age 16. The bug got me and I joined my first real band at age 20 or 21. I think my Dad used to play a bit of guitar, but no, not much of a musical background in the family.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SONG YOU HAVE WRITTEN AND WHY? That’s a tricky question. I really don’t look at individual songs as important or special, but rather the album as a whole. It’s still the only format that I feel comfortable with. I’m well aware of the trend these days where artists rely more on singles. With an album, every song is different and has its specific role to play within the greater body of work. But if I really had to pick just one it would be “Lost at sea” off the new album. I really like the chord progression.
HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR MUSIC?
WILL YOU EVER CONSIDER GIGGING IN DURBAN AND WHEN CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE YOU THERE?
I would say it fits more into the alternative genre although there are serious elements of rock/pop and folk. Some people would say “Indie”, but I don’t like that word.
Our plan is to tour this album, so possibly yes, it all depends on whether we can secure the necessary sponsorships.
IF I WAS SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER HEARD YOUR MUSIC, WHAT EXPERIENCE WOULD I GET GOING TO ONE OF YIOUR GIGS?
DO YOU EVER GET NERVOUS BEFORE YOU GO ON STAGE?
You will either like it or not, depending on your personality and preferences. I don’t exactly play beer drinking music, it’s a bit more cerebral and demands a bit of attention. We are currently busy with rehearsals in support of the new album and at the moment its quite energetic and intense with some mellower moments in between.
It depends on my state of mind on the night, but in general, yes I do. Sometimes more sometimes than not, but that element of nervous anticipation is always there.
IN MUSIC WHO INFLUENCES YOU THE MOST? I would have to list Smashing Pumpkins, Radiohead, REM, Manic street preachers, Stone roses, Placebo as important influences, but I really just appreciate a great song, whether it’s metal or pop.
WHERE DO YOU FIND THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR SONGWRITING AND WHAT IS THE PROCESS LIKE? I really don’t know how or when inspiration works, it’s mostly subconscious. But I never write lyrics first, I’ve tried and it doesn’t work for me. I let the music dictate the lyrical content. Usually I will start off with a chord progression and some rhythmic element and put a melody on top of that. Mainly it’s melody first.
“ I only picked up a guitar at the age of 16 ”
YOU WERE RECENTLY IN THE ZONE RADIO STUDIOS CHATTING TO THE BREAKBAST TEAM, JUST HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH A RADIO STATION SUCH AS ZONE RADIO? It’s extremely important. They are creating an avenue for struggling yet extremely talented artists to get their music heard, and I really appreciate that! Unfortunately in South Africa, the power still lies with commercial radio. If you want to be successful and well known as an artist, you have to get onto commercial radio, which is damn near impossible unless you have a friend on the inside or can afford a very expensive agent. Sadly, quality of music or originality doesn’t mean much these days, it’s all about hype and marketing and so many artists just cannot afford that kind of marketing, myself included. I find this aspect really difficult to deal with, I’ve always believed that music should speak for itself. Stations like Zone Radio give us the opportunity to get our music heard and I wish them all the best! They are playing a very important role.
YOU ARE ABOUT TO RELEASE YOUR 3rd ALBUM, WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT FROM THIS ALBUM? “Kaleidoscope”, which is due for release in November this year, is my third solo effort. I’m quite happy with it, I feel it’s the best work I’ve done so far. It’s a blend , offering a bit of everything within the genre, yet it’s a cohesive body of work. With “Kaleidoscope” I tried to write a record that I’d like to listen to as a fan.
WHERE CAN PEOPLE GET HOLD OF YOUR MUSIC?

THANKS SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DO THIS INTERVIEW WITH FANBASE My pleasure and thank you for everything you do to support our local talent.

Having broken my Koppi virginity last year, I was pretty amped to make the 3 hour trip to Oppikoppi Sweet \ Thing. The line up this year boasted more internationals than all the other SA festivals combined as well as the best in South African bands and DJ’s. Everything about Oppikoppi this year was bigger and better - more stages, more bands, better infrastructure and if you could believe, there even seemed to be more dust! Having met up with my band in Northam itself, we braced ourselves for the queue of cars waiting to get into Koppi. About half an hour into the line my guitarists car decided to overheat, causing the two Durban cars to pull over to the side. Guess it was time to crack open a beer anyway! Having to eventually make an unexpected detour back into town in search of a water hose, having panic attacks thinking you are going to be hijacked and telling your singer “I’ll keep the motor running, so tuck and roll and be fast”. The adventure to Koppi was well under way. Amongst the group, the excitement for the bands was mixed with many of the group looking forward to international band Eagles of Death Metal, Enter Shikari and Bullet, with some just looking forward to 4 days of non stop drinking. Me personally, I was looking forward to Koppi being over - having been on tour for 2 weeks with Bombay Show Pig, I was ready for my own bed and a proper shower. The first day’s line up was a great start to the festival. Chilling in the Bruillof tent, festival goers were treated to a number of new artists, including the babies of the festival - Spoegwolf and singer songwriter Lily Million. Lily’s vocal range ensured that there was diversity for all those who listened, her cover of Gnarls Barkley’s Crazy was definitely the highlight of her performance. Other stand out performances were Berlin based, Knorkator. A weird combination of rock, metal, tattoos and thong leotards! Having missed them the previous night at The Doors, the anticipation was high. The band didn’t fail to deliver. Adding some comedic lines between songs in their very broken English and their high energy on stage meant that the crowd that had gathered had a blast. Their set was 15 songs crammed into the hour and included an amazing cover of Boney M’s “Ma Baker” to the delight of the crowd. The main reason why everyone arrived on Thursday was to watch the epic performance by Southern Gypsey Queen. Kicking off their 10 Year Anniversary tour, the band was joined on stage by all the big names and familiar faces in the industry including Albert Frost, David Van Vuuren, Tamara Day, Shadowclub, Will (Fuzigish) and Ampie Omo (BOO!) as well as lead singer of reggae band, Tidal Waves Jacob. The performance can only be summed up as mind blowing. The band rocked harder than I’ve ever seen them and the guest artists bled passion, love and respect for band that has had it’s fair share of ups and downs in the ever changing SA music scene. Not even light failure half way through the set could dampen the excitement on stage. Friday saw us up early to film MK Studio1 with Bombay Show Pig while the other internationals headed off to a school nearby for a special performance for the children. By this stage there were many dusty, hung over people lurking around the free Jacobs coffee stand.
Friday saw us hanging out at the MK Kube stage often, where for the first time fringe entertainment included ballet, Minute to Win It inspired games with Corne and Twakkie, open mic sessions as well as a mini theatre production about OppiBoy (don’t ask...) On the main stages performances were Dutch internationals, Bombay Show Pig (okay so I’m incredibly biased as I am their tour manager) but truly they were phenomenal. With their own twist on indie rock with their combination of synth and samples. Linda on drums is a sight for any red blooded man. Saturday was the highlight day for many, with the headliners including Seether, Kongo’s, Eagles of Death Metal, Enter Shikari and Bullet for my Valentine performing. I must be honest, the walking off of the Kongo’s left me with a bitter taste, after all it left everything running an hour late. Earlier in the day, Lonehill Estate, the Graeme Watkins Project, Dance You’re on Fire, Yoav and Newtown Knife Gang all had the chance to share their music. Each bringing something unique to the line up - Lonehill Estate with their satirical and gimmicky songs - not anything that I enjoy. I could appreciate that the crowd loved them. The Graeme Watkins brought their usual manic performance - in the midday heat I’m not sure how they didnt pass out. Dance You’re on Fire are one of my current fav bands - having heard their new album “Light Repeating” before it broke on radio, the new songs were all I wanted to hear. The band played a mixed set with their firm favourites with the crowd including “Boxes of Tigers” and then all the new tracks that will be favourites with DYOF’s fans shortly! Saturday also saw stalwart of the industry, Vusi Mahlasela being honoured on main stage for surviving 20 years in the industry. Vusi was joined on stage by Karen Zoid, Albert Frost and Valient Swart . Vusi’s music encompasses everything that is magical and special about music. His music moves you, inspires you and bonds you with the people around you - regardless of race or gender, in his music you all become brothers and sisters. Newtown Knife Gang deserve a special mention. They were one of the few local bands who were given slots at the same time as the international bands. As Eagles of Death Metal owned main stage, Newtown Knife Gang took to the Skellum stage with an easy 500 strong crowd. Previously known as 16 Stitch I expected more melodic hard rock, well, Newtown Knife Gang have moved away from that, bringing a fresh nu-metal sound to their music. The crowd were quickly swept into the frenzy and soon the dust was flying. The pit grew to a considerable size and didn't stop until after a loud ENCORE cry... Out of all my performances that I saw at Koppi, Newtown Knife Gang were in the top5. Eagles of Death Metal were disappointing - the sound on the James Philips stage was less than par (hence the Kongo’s walking off!). I cant say that their set inspired me to follow them post Koppi nor to see why people were raving about them, maybe it has something to do with the lead singers wicked mustache - I cant think of any other reason. Some say that they loved the set simply because they couldn’t believe that all the old tracks were being played live in front of them. Skipping between stages, I made my way to the photographers pit for my debut watch of Enter Shikari. There has been a lot of hype around the band who won the Kerrang! Award 2012for the Best Live Band. Pent up rage against commercialism, politics and pretty much everything was let loose on stage and the strobe lights caused seizures in even the mildest of epileptic concert goers. Their performance was erratic, loud and everything that their live EP’s and albums promises . I was mesmerized by their performance - forgetting to actually photograph at times!
Seether. Wow. #thatisall. Nah, Seether are these phenomenal entertainers, Breaking into their hits immediately, a shiver quickly spread down my spine listening to the songs that reminded me of my teenhood. If you closed your eyes, you could be forgiven that you were back in 2007 when Seether last visited South Africa. Shaun delivered a powerful and emotional set and other than Shaun looking like he packed on a few extra pounds, the band were faultless (in my opinion at least). I didn’t stick around to watch Bullet for my Valentine.

We have something really good install for you in this issue. We are featuring Mr Mark Haze himself. You may all remember Mark as the runner up from Idols 2011, but when I say runner up I really don’t mean second best. We are honoured to feature one of the most talented guys in the music business today!!! I must confess, this isn’t like any other interview because for this feature, we have allowed some of Mark Haze’s fans to ask the questions. So well done to the fans who submitted their questions. Enjoy the read!!!
Interviewed by : “The Fans”
Questions by Gayle Steel …………….
Questions sent in by Paul Wilson ……
What is a typical day in the new life of Mark Haze?
If you had your own rock festival, 'Haze Day', what 5 current local and international bands would you like to open for you and where would the concert be held?
It varies from day to day, but usually it starts with me doing social media updates on upcoming events and activities. I talk to my management and record label about strategy, new single releases, music videos and then my agents about shows and tours – we try to plan about 4-5 months in advance. I practice my piano and guitar for about an hour every day and rehearse with my band every second day. I’ve had to get fitter for the many performances I do, so I now go to gym 4 times a week and play squash 3 times a week and a yoga lesson once a week. Aside from that, I am often speaking to media and press or while on tour, I like to meet with my various sponsors and endorsement partners. It changes and varies quite often, and to be honest, that’s why I like it so much – it’s never boring
Being king of the braai, what is your speciality?
Well, I’ve always been a fan of Ozfest in the USA – a touring festival put together by Ozzy Osbourne and his wife and son. It would be a stadium and arena tour and would be held at all the majors in SA. I don’t think I would be the main act, but I would definitely like to be one of the acts J Examples of the types of bands I’d call upon: Fokofpolisiekar Seether Bullet for my Valentine My Chemical Romance Foo Fighters Black Eyed Peas U2
If you could jam with 3 musicians, past or present, who would they be? Jimi Hendrix
Well…I’m king of the braai, because I can braai pretty much anything. If I had to choose something that my friends and family ALWAYS ask me to do specifically for them, it would have to be steak.
Queen
What is your favourite song on the new album?
I would love to play a Jedi in a new Star Wars movie!! I would just love to have my own customised lightsaber and souvenir.
I have no specific favourite – that’s like asking a parent to choose between one of their babies.
Eric Clapton
If you could guest star in a TV series or movie, what would it be and why?
If you were an athlete at the Olympics, what event would you liked to compete in? I actually used to do shot-put, hockey and discus in High School, I also really enjoy volleyball, so I guess I would do one of those.
“Idols was my last attempt at boosting my career”
Questions sent in by Doug Meyers….
Questions sent in by Chantal McCreadie…..
Where and how did you get your start in music?
Would you do a gig with David Van Vuuren?
I started singing as a child without any coaxing – it just happened. When I was 4, I sang in front of people at my church for the first time. My grandmother played piano in the house, so I started taking lessons at school when I was 7. My uncle and Dad both played in bands, and I really fell in love with the guitar, so I started playing. When I was in high school, I was exposed to many different styles of music and many talented instrumentalists. I learned how to play drums, trumpet and a bit of harmonica. I played in 2 jazz bands, the school orchestra and a marching band, as well as in the school musicals. I started my first band when I left school.
I have many times and am sure we will again.
I guess I just gravitated towards music throughout my whole life – it’s just something that was always around me. I was in a band called ‘Liquid Sky’ who had success with a good couple of hit singles. I then formed ‘12th Avenue’ and toured the country, recorded 4 albums and had 2 number 1 hits and 7 top 10 singles. We unfortunately, like a lot of bands throughout history, trusted the wrong people and had several people steal money from us and ran our business into the ground. Idols was my last attempt at boosting my career in the direction it needed to go.
What musician or musicians were your greatest influences? Freddie Mercury from Queen, Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin, and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, and Ozzy Osbourne played a huge part in my singing style. I really loved the styles of Brian May from Queen, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and Eddie Van Halen. I also remember being introduced to U2 in high school – they really taught me a lot about song writing and really speaking from the heart and soul.
Have you or will you ever tour the US? I would love to catch one of your performances live? That is one of my biggest dreams! This is something that is being set up and I’m sure you’ll be seeing me there very soon .
When do you think the Mark Haze Band will start going overseas? We plan to have a European and USA trip under our belts by this time next year. It takes quite a bit to get it set up, but my management and label and I are putting the plan together as we speak.
Would you ever give a Fan the opportunity to sit down and write a song with you? It’s difficult to actually sit down and write with a fan – we get requests and letters almost every day about this sort of thing. If anyone wants to submit a song, it has to be done via the record label and management channels. If it’s something the team want to use, we will make contact.
Mark, on your CD cover, you wrote that various people (including your wife, Shelley and Nicci Hayden) were part of the gang vocals, which songs were these and what on earth are “gang vocals”? Gang vocals are vocal takes done where it sounds like a whole bunch of people yelling together. You hear a good example on it on Bon Jovi’s ‘Lay your hands on me’ – it sounds like a whole bunch of people yelling “Hey!”. I got them, plus the band, plus the studio staff into one room and had them yell “Shake!” on the track ‘Shake what your mama gave you’ to give it a crowd-like sound for a performance effect on the track.
While your fans know that the CD is by Mark Haze and the other three members of 12th Avenue, there are obviously many who see it as a solo CD and it’s been marketed as such. I understand that it was obviously part of the contract, but do Gareth, Bjorn and Brian have an issue with sort of been pushed to the background? (as said, us fans know their worth and obviously so do you). In other words, does it bug them? No, it doesn’t bug them J In 12th Avenue, I was always the leader, frontman and business man of the band – nothing has changed with regards to the business end of the organisation. It was actually a decision made by the band to change it to my name due to the success I had on Idols. More people now know the name Mark Haze than 12th Avenue. It was never a term of my signing to the record label – it just made more sense to not confuse people by trying to tell them that Mark Haze was actually in a band called 12th Avenue, when we could just call the project Mark Haze. I still spent the entire time in studio and I still had creative control on the project as like before. That didn’t stop the guys from giving their input though – we’re a family at the end of the day!
Will the ensemble of Mark, Gareth, Bjorn and Brian always be known as Mark Haze from now on? Yes – the brand name doesn’t change anything for us. We get to do what we love to do and as long as that keeps on happening – we’re happy. The fact is that the band is just that, they are the band – they play music and write music. The thing is that the business does a lot more than that and the business is run by me and everything that happens, from marketing, advertising, the look and sound, etc is handled by me.
What other business ventures are you and the rest of the group involved in? Bjorn owns a bar in Durbanville, Cape Town called ‘The Rabbit Hole’.
How does the group go about writing songs? Is it a joint effort, or do you all do your writing separately and then get together to fine-tune the music/lyrics? Everyone writes, brings songs to the table and then I make a call on what to fine tune in our rehearsal studio. Sometimes it’s just material I’ve written, sometimes Bjorn and I write together, or it’s compiled by the group in a writing session.
Which member is the most prolific lyric writer of the four? Everyone has their strengths
How does your family cope with you being away from home so often? We’re a strong unit – I make sure I speak to my wife every night before I go to bed when I’m away. Other than that, when I’m home, I make sure that I set time aside for them.
Why aren’t you part of the Joburg Day line-up? (This is a travesty, by the way) You tell me! It’s OK – each to their own. Promoters choose who they feel will do the best job. I believe that I am that person, but sometimes they don’t .
Everyone that’s bought the CD has their own favourites… however, there is one song that every single person I’ve spoken to, really adores and that is A Tout La Monde. It’s extremely haunting and although I’ve since listened to the original version, the Mark Haze version is far more captivating. How much creative control did you and the other three members of the group enjoy in covering the song? Will it be released as a single in the future? You never know what will be a single – it’s a process that is only discovered over time. The change in version happened in studio – it was actually reworked by myself, Bjorn and my producer Theo Crous. We were just experimenting with different things and decided to lay down a very simple acoustic guitar to start the recording off. From there, the Spanish Guitar solo evolved and the castanets grew from there. The whole point of the song was to keep it honest and pure.
I was lucky enough to witness one of the best gigs to be held in South Africa, San Diego rockers Switchfoot graced our shores in August playing shows in Joburg and Cape town. Having just moved down to Jozi the land of gold I made it a mission to get myself to this particular gig. I must say I heard of this gig by chance as my girlfriend was enquiring about another gig at Computicket and she saw that Switchfoot will be playing in S.A . Despite the really bad advertising for this talented band I was surprised at the good turnout although with a bit of better advertising a few more seats would have been filled, but be that as it may, the night was still rocking and to our excitement the support act was a great South African band. Their performance that night made me one of their huge fans. I’m talking about Durban based band “Gangs of Ballet” who rocked the gig and who was an awesome choice to open up for Switchfoot. Well done boys. I’m going to make it my mission to feature them in Fanbase Music mag. After such a rocking performance, the excitement was unbearable as the stage crew set up for the main act, Switchfoot. Finally the time had arrived, Switchfoot took to the stage and performed one of the best gigs ever. They are such an awesome live band. Being a relatively old band you forget how many songs you actually know and they didn’t disappoint by playing their biggest hits along with some new ones. My fave song of the night was “Meant to Live” the band made it sound even better than the studio version, and that is just one example of why they are such a great live band to watch. The bands stage performance crowd interaction was incredible as lead singer , Jon Foreman, jumped into the crowd and proceeded to walk through the crowd while singing, jumping over barriers to get through to non-golden circle ticket holders, giving everyone at the gig a unique experience to touch him or sing along to the song. The band played for a good two hours and really gave the crowd its monies worth. All I can say is if you were not at the gig then you really missed out. Thank you to Switchfoot for visiting South Africa and rocking out with us. You guys rock!!!

How did you get into photography? 5years ago I used a friend’s 350D Canon for my daughters 1st birthday party. I bought myself the camera the following month and it went from me just using it for family to shooting family and friends. 6months later I turned 30 and my family, friends and husband bought me new gear 50mm F1.8 lens, 430ex flash and 70300mm zoom lens. They saw that the photography had become something bigger than just a hobby for me.
What camera are you currently using? 60D Canon with a 50D as back up.
What do you like about photography? This is a hard question. There are so many parts of photography that I love. The smiles you are able to make last forever when you capture them. I love it when my clients send me photos of what they have done with their images. Lately I have a lot of my work reprinted on canvas and have been sent photos of them hanging on my clients walls in their homes. There is very little that can compare to that joy you feel. I enjoy making lasting relationships with my clients. From engagements to their weddings, announcing their pregnancy, preggy photos and even capturing the birth. I am grateful my clients trust me with their forever moments.
What style of photography do you like? I do mostly family photography. I love working with families and giving them images they can have forever.
Where do you see you’re self in five years, in terms of your photography? I have finally found what I like to do, so I would like to concentrate on perfecting my skills. I am going on a new born course in September. I would just like to be happy with every image I produce and stop being so critical.
Who is your favourite photographer and why? Sarah-Beth Photography in the states. I love her fresh and loving out look to her images. Where the happiness of the family is always the focal point.
Describe a day in the life of a photographer? 1) Check your bag for the shoot you are preparing for. 2) Clean your equipment 3) Make sure your batteries are charged that day. 4) Plan your route to the venue you are shooting at. This can save you a lot of stress. 5) Wear comfy shoes!! Always look good when shooting at a smart function. 6) Double check your bag! Back up equipment is important. 7) Pack an “in case snack and drink”. Sometimes working 7-9hrs on a wedding you’ll need more than just the meal that is served And then just let rip and enjoy it! try new things and smile. A happy and relaxed photographer creates happy photos!
What advice do you have for upcoming photographers? Don’t stop shooting. Use the tools you have till you are able to get what you need. Don’t let equipment stop you from achieving. Ask questions and be ready for real criticism. Don’t take it too personally. If you can find a more advanced photographer to mentor you, do it. This was very difficult for me; I had very little support from others and try now to help the newbies out when I can.
Where can people get hold of you? My email is info@maineframephotos.co.za my website is www.maineframephotos.co.za and I’m on Facebook under Maine Frame Photos.
Interviewed by : Duwyne Clayton
The other day as I was listening to Adrian Larger’s show on Zone Radio, it was interrupted by the Unicorn to do an interview with a very good organisation. I thought it was weird that he is doing this interview now in Adrian’s show but now I know why. The guy he interviewed was Les Ruhrmund the Chairman of the board of Nazareth House!!! So you can understand why they had to slot the interview in this time as Les is so busy that it was hard to find time do this interview. I’m so glad that they got to do the interview because what they spoke about really touched my heart and I’m sure many other listeners’ hearts. Nazareth House is an organisation who takes care of disadvantaged, vulnerable people who have no close family or anyone else able to provide the care they require. These people fall into three main groups:
Frail aged Nazareth House is open to all frail elderly people, regardless of race, religion or culture. However, as demand far outstrips capacity, priority is given to those in the most desperate circumstances – elderly people who are also mentally or physically challenged, those who need full time nursing care and those who are destitute with no family able to care for them. Terminally ill adults St Michaels Hospice in the grounds of Nazareth House, Vredehoek, provides short term palliative nursing care for the poorest members of society – those in the final stages of AIDS who are homeless after being abandoned by their families, and refugees with nowhere else to go. Many arrive with nothing but the hospital gown in which they have been transferred, and remain at St Michaels Hospice until their death.
Children's Home Most of the babies and children cared for at Nazareth House have been abandoned, orphaned or abused. Many are infected with HIV and/or have special needs, problems or disabilities such as Down Syndrome, Cerebral palsy, Foetal Alcohol Syndrome, Epilepsy, Deafness and Blindness. They also function as an emergency after-hours place of safety for children who have to be urgently removed from dangerous or abusive situations, new-born babies found abandoned in toilets or on railway lines, and those whose parents die suddenly in the night.
Community Cottage The healthier HIV+ boys and girls live together as a family unit in a house in the community, under the care of a Housemother and an Assistant. The children attend local schools and interact with their peers in the community at the local football and gymnastics clubs.
Family reunification programme We all know that institutional care for children should be the last resort; wherever possible we try to help families to cope long-term, or place children in the care of their extended families.
FANBASE MUSIC MAG ALONG WITH ZONE RADIO WANT TO HELP, AND WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!!! So as you can see the organisation is in great need of help as it is not easy to support such cases without the help of financial support from the public, and this is where Fanbase along with Zone Radio wants to help. We are organising a Charity event for The Nazareth House in Cape Town. In the few months to come we will have a day festival where bands will perform and all proceeds from the door takings will go to this awesome organisation. We are still in the process of organising this event so dates have not been set but what we can tell you are that it will be held at The Zulu Bar in Cape Town. We have already managed to secure 5 confirmed bands but we are keeping the names of the bands a surprise to create excitement. This event will be a good way to not only support your local bands, but also to support this awesome organisation that desperately needs your help. If you would like to help sponsor this event or would like to place your band on a short list to play at this event then please email Duwyne Clayton at fanbasemusicmag@gmail.com There are tons of ways to help, money is just one important factor to help but donations of nappies, blankets food etc is also welcome. We are planning on having a donation basket at the door where you can maybe drop of any of the items to help out. So keep watching this space and listen to Zone Radio via www.zoneradio.com to find out more info on when worthy cause event will take place.
Can’t wait for the gig but still want to help? You can check out the Nazareth House Cape Town website by logging on to http://www.nazhouse.org.za Or email them at: http://www.nazhouse.org.za You can contact them on 021 461 1635
And ask them how you can help? It really is a good organisation to support!!!
