MICHAEL NARANJO When I think of Michael Naranjo, I think of a talented, passionate musician. This is a guy who is defiantly involved in the S.A music scene in a big way, and not only is he involved, but he is passionate about it to. When he is not fronting his awesome band “One day remains” he is recording other artists through his label “House of writers”, or you can find him involved in a project he masterminded called The Guevara Sessions, which is something I myself is very excited about and I think it is going to be the future of S.A music. Enjoy this interview and read up on one of South Africa’s passionate musicians.

Thanx so much for doing this interview with Fanbase Music Mag, it really is an honor as I am a huge fan. Where did it all start as a musician? Do you come from a musical background? It started when I was about 14, my parents encouraged me to put music to my poetry which I enjoyed writing from a young age. My parents being South American ( Argentina/ Uruguay) were very creative people so I guess the gene came from them and I can’t thank God enough for the talent. I started taking music seriously because I saw how music affected people and can activate so many different emotions and I wanted to be a part of that and have been gratefully been doing this professionally ever since. You are the lead singer of “One Day Remains”, tell us what’s the latest with the band? I see you have a new member by the name of Jed James? We have some great plans for 2013 and we will keep you up to speed regarding that as it unfolds. Yes I have been fortunate to work with Jed James on his established solo career where he has been working with some of the top international artists in the UK before returning to SA a while back, his invaluable input into ODR and The Guevara Sessions led to him being added as our second guitarist.

What was the reason to bring Jed into the band and what does he contribute to the band? There are many reasons for Jed coming into the band and the first is that he is very diverse, he is a phenomenal artist and songwriter in his own right and probably one of the best guitarists I have had the honor of working with. He also has an energy that is so contagious and positive but the main reason for getting him in was because of damage to my hand after the shooting incident. You’ve been through the wars, being gunned down in a shooting, what can you tell us about that and how has it changed your song writing and outlook on life? (Read the true story of the shooting at the end of the interview as told by Michael himself) The way it has affected my songwriting is that it has allowed me to focus on what is important and to have an exponential view on society and writing from a point of view where the listener can make up his or her own mind and hopefully identify with what I am saying. It is very difficult for me to grasp an industry pushed out product that has no longevity and they happened to call it “The Music Industy” . You went on stage two days after the shooting, just to see if you can still play guitar, which is quite heroic, has the shooting affected your guitar playing in anyway? To an extent yes – it has limited my guitar playing as I am right handed and I certainly have some nerve damage to contend with. I

would say I struggle the most while I am recording/producing in the studio to keep up with the click as consistency is so important, but we muscle on because the music can’t stop. “One day remains” recently got their video played on MK, how has that been so far and what has the response been like? Firstly I would like to thank Bouwer Bosch and Vaughan Coetzee for paying it forward LiefdeWen Style for putting the video together, I have always enjoyed Straatligkinders, their energy and what they stand for. Collaborating with Bouwer on one of their songs has been an absolute blessing and hopefully not the last. The response has been very good and the YouTube views have been climbing steadily – We also want to thank Louis du Pisani from MK Ondergrond for the love! You have a real and raw presence on stage, do you get nervous when you go on stage? Thank you for saying that. After all these years that I have been playing it still feels to me like walking into a year- end exam in matric haha. My stomach turns, I guess it’s because I recognize the responsibility of walking onto stage and the responsibility of making sure that the audience is captured and fully entertained and that creates a certain amount of pre-show stress. It keeps me on my toes.

Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? Yes I do – I listen to some Rage Against the Machine, Lamb of God and Altar Bridge or anything that wants to make you kick a door in. Then I pray. You are the mastermind behind the Guevara Sessions, what can you tell us about this concept and what is it you are trying to achieve? Every movement starts with a singular idea or purpose. In this case I have used my resources, my time and my love for incredible undiscovered talent. In this process I initially thought that I “gave” – instead I received so much more by having worked with these artists personally. The idea is to expose this project online by making the music accessible to anybody and to show what can be done with the little that is to your availability. Who are some of the musicians and talent that has taken part of the Guevara Sessions? These are some of the incredible artists that have taken part – One Day Remains / Son 1000 / 11th Hour / LEVEN / 2nd Life / Andy Wood / Falling Aces / Andre van Rooyen / Cindy Alter / Daniela Diogo / Funeka Peppeta / Jed James / Sheldon du St Pern / Stephanie Calitz / Minutes of Mercy / The Angels Unaware Project / Misbreed / Bouwer Bosch / Slasher / Blackshadow Solomon / Libertad / Conspiracy 7 What has the response been like with regards to the Guevara Sessions ? We have had phenomenal local and international response on this project having songs played on radio stations in the USA, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Venezuela, Italy, New Zealand, The Netherlands and Canada and hearing the same question over and over again – “Who are these artists?” We would like to send a BIG shout out to Fresh @5Fm for his excitement about “Revolution of the Heart” featured on The Guevara Sessions and for playing it 4 minutes before Rock the Republic show started!. To clarify things – The Guevara Sessions is NOT a politically driven project but a revolution of music that is driven by a great feeling of love. Where can we watch and listen to some of the tracks recorded for the Guevara Sessions? http://soundcloud.com/the-guevara-sesions http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-GuevaraSessions-Guerrilla-Radio/438117316239937 You are very passionate about South African music and the talents we have in South Africa, what do you think of the state of our music industry and do you think we have what it takes to compete in the big wide world? As far as I am concerned there have been a lot of changes in the music industry in our country since I started and I must say that not all have been positive towards the artists and from an artist point of view and for potential 100% involvement from the industry pushers we could get a lot more Seethers, Tree 63’s,

Just Jinjers, Prime Circles , Parlotones, Clouts ( 12 million records sold worldwide) and Rabbits launch into the international market and make a success as we certainly have world class talent in this country. I strongly believe in unsigned artist development and the world industry statistics have shown that independent labels/artists can in fact own their own music and with the help of a reputable publisher can make it if they work hard. There should be no monopolizing from a promoting, marketing, and gigging point of view across the board in this industry. The only problem that unsigned artists face is that there are very few people with resources and information that is willing to get behind them and or share what artists really need to know before signing any deal.

“Rock is what makes the world go round”

You are also involved in the House of Writers, what can you tell us about that and what it stands for? The House of Writers hosts a community of songwriters and musicians and showcases their own profiles. We assist artists where we can from a production and information point of view. The Guevara Sessions is a division of The House of Writers under Guerrilla Music. You are definitely very passionate and vocal about your beliefs; is there anything else you would like to add to this interview? Rock is what makes the world go round…let’s see more artists in that area get the industry help they deserve. Keep pushing and make music that will last a lifetime. Getting artists in studio and have their song played on radio the next day would be great … God Bless South African Music ! Do you have a way people can get hold of you? Social media etc? http://www.facebook.com/ TheHouseOfWritersMusicGroup http://www.facebook.com/OneDayRemainsSA http://www.youtube.com/user/onedayremainssa? feature=results_main http://www.facebook.com/michael.p.naranjo email – houseofwriters1@gmail.com

True Story as quoted by : Michael Naranjo It was Thursday 8 October 2009, I was on my way with my friend to house –sit her parent’s house in Primrose over the long weekend. We got to the house and pulled into the driveway, my friend got out of the car and went to open the front door whilst I was still sitting in the car I had already opened my door slightly when I noticed the gate wasn’t closing properly as if it was jammed. The next second I saw a man in what would be my blind spot, I looked in the side mirror and saw him cocking his gun and my first thought was “It’s not going to be me”. I moved as quickly as possible and since my door was ajar he did not hear as I pushed the door open and got out. I moved in toward him and tried to grab the gun from his hand but he ran backwards as if he was afraid of something, as he got a bit of distance and with me still charging at him he pulled up his gun and put it straight into my face and the first shot went off, my hands instinctively went up to cover my face and I just felt what could be described as an electric shock going through my body. The flash of the gun blinded me completely and I thought he had shot me through the left cheek. Still charging at him blindly he fired another shot and that went through my right tricep as I was still trying to fight him for the gun. By this time I had managed to get the assailant away from where the car was parked inside the property to the gate which was a distance of about 5 m. I was still blinded by the flash of the first shot and finally I managed to grab him with both hands and at that moment I thought I was going to die. I heard and felt the 3rd shot, through my upper inner thigh and this was later confirmed by the trauma doctor to have been literally 1mm away from my femoral artery. By then I had collapsed and the shooter stood over me pointing the gun at me and threatened to come back to finish us off. Whilst all this was happening my friend was screaming and shouting which unnerved the assailants – there were 3 – and due to all the noise and commotion the surrounding neighbours started coming outside and assisted in fending them off. I was on the ground on my back; I was in shock and freezing. The blood started pooling under me and it was so warm in contrast, I lifted my right hand and I realized that I had been shot through the hand and not my face and I slipped away. I was gone for 7 minutes. I had the distinct feeling of being “pushed back” on my chest and when I came to I was being given cpr by a bystander. They rolled me over to see where I was shot and when I came to I was helped up to get to the front door where there was more light. I was in severe shock and convulsing; I managed to call Ryan Schnettler (guitarist) and told him I just got shot, at first he thought I was messing around but quickly realized it was serious. An angel unaware (neighbour) assisted me into my car and he rushed me to the hospital as the ambulance never arrived, as we drove off we had to go around the block and we saw the 3 men again. I remember arriving at the hospital but slipped in and out of consciousness so most of it is still a blur. I do remember seeing a couple in ER on beds next to me, apparently they were killed in a hi-jacking a few hours earlier in the same area. There were a few faces I remember standing by the bed and coming in and out of the ER. I was later bandaged up, given morphine and crutches and sent on my way. That Sunday I was booked to play an acoustic gig at Cool Runnings and I was determined to see if I can still play the guitar, my mother had flown in from South America and was there to support me, so crutches and all I pushed and did the gig. A week later Ryan started building a studio at his home – S-Cubed Studios – and with the love and support from him and his family I started writing and recording again and the result of that is the latest album titled Saints and Sinners. Since the incident I have lasting nerve damage in my right arm and have problems with my sight – I had to start wearing glasses as the flash of the gunshot apparently caused damage in my eyes. I am very thankful that my ears were not affected. One thing I take from that whole incident is that our song “Never Say Die” has a whole new meaning to me personally and that life is too short to bear grudges. By the Grace of God I pray I can leave a great legacy and LIVE life every day as if it is my last.

Linkin Park “Living Things Tour” Johannesburg Concert With the tragic incident that happened in Cape Town that injured 20 people and claimed a life of a young Linkin Park fan, the buzz around the FNB stadium was a mix of excitement and thoughts of the freak accident that took place. I can remember thinking, something like that is never good when you are waiting to experience the concert just two days after such a tradegy, but with the biggest respect to the families and people involved in the sad accident, and with it truly never forgotten, the show in Johannesburg had to go on. Before I tell you what a great show it was, it has to be said and pointed out that Linkin Park really do care about their fans as they acknowledged the incident in Cape Town with Mike Shinoda coming on stage after the encore, and saying a few kind and warm hearted words, bringing tears to those in the sold out stadium. I have so much respect for the band for what they said about the unfortunate incident and would like to start off this review by congratulating the band on this. I would also like to express our condolences to the injured fans in Cape Town and especially to the young fan’s family who lost her life in such a horrible way. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. The traffic was already piling up as we left at about 3pm to make our way to the FNB Stadium. We were one of the lucky ones who had a parking ticket allowing us to park inside the stadium grounds. The people involved at the gates and security staff was very helpful as they directed us to our seats. Thanks to my media pass I was lucky enough to be seated in the Golden Circle, best place to be seated. First up was The Kongos, who in my mind was a perfect choice for the open band. The band nailed the performance, and really lived up to the standards of such a huge event. They played their big numbers, which have been making big airwaves on radio stations like 5FM, one of the gig sponsors. With Jack Parrow joining them on stage it made for a really good experience for all who witnessed the opening act. They were asked to deliver, and deliver they did. Well done Kongos !!! As The Kongos finished their set, we were all amped with excitement for the great Linkin Park to take the stage. I think the roadies and crew couldn’t get the stage done quickly enough as we were all waiting in anticipation for the main act to start. After all the stage lights were checked and rechecked. After all the instruments were checked and rechecked and all the equipment checked, the time had finally arrived.

It was time for Linkin Park to take to the stage. The jam packed crowd at the FNB stadium was excited, with various Mexican waves circling the stadium which was awesome to be a part of. Then suddenly the lights went out, the big screen showed the drummer as he banged the drums to the opening song. The cool thing about the big screens was that Linkin Park really put thought into it and made different animation effects every now and again which added something a bit extra to the show. Chester Bennington was on top form as was the rest of the band. What amazed me and probably the rest of the band was the whole stadium knew every word to every song. It was truly amazing to witness that and I can only imagine how the band felt hearing 80 000 people singing their lyrics back at them. It is no wonder everyone knew the words. Linkin Park played a fans dream playlist. It really was such an awesome set list and to watch the band play those songs live made for a perfect gig. Songs that were played on the night was: A Place For My Head , Given Up, New Divide, With You , Somewhere I Belong , In my remains victimized, Points Of Authority, Lies Greed Misery, Waiting For The End, Breaking The Habit, The Catalyst, Lost in the Echo, In The End, Numb (Outro 'Numb/Encore, What I've Done, Burn it Down, Bleed It Out , Tinfoil, Faint , Lying From You / Papercut , One Step Closer (Ext. Outro) So as you can see the choice in the set list was perfect and it really made for a strong 80 000 crowd sing along to every lyric belted out by the band. Linkin Park know how to bring their “A” game. They know how to rock a crowd and they didn’t disappoint. What also made the concert awesome was the band brought a South African flag on to the stage, really connecting with the huge South African crowd. If you were not at the gig then you definitely missed out. All I can say is Linkin Park was phenomenal and it was one of the best gigs I have ever been to in my life. Well done Linkin Park. South Africa loves you!!!

Donovan Fourie Donovan Fourie embarked upon his spiritual journey with a guitar. Driven by the forces of folk, blues, reggae and ska Donovan’s music captures his adventures through life and his experiences of the world. His first solo album “Fire Within” delivers the soul of this young artist, taking you on a journey of connection through music; whilst documenting the process of becoming free from genre – an ideal that Fourie holds close whilst writing. Donovan’s music career manifested after four years of hard work on a skate boarding documentary. It was unfortunately never released. But Donovan sprung back into action with determination and commitment following a new avenue - music. Shortly after work on the documentary Donovan’s mother found herself in a pawn shop, buying her son a birthday present. That second hand electric guitar was a blessing that brought him to take his first steps down the path of music. He never turned back.

His solo career progressed into the forming of Energy Related – Backed up by session drummer Storm Awesome Thomas and session bass guitarist Byron Horn. The fruit of this band’s labor is fresh, and chilled – “The Strings of Life”, the band’s firsts full length album is a testament to that, as is their previously released EP “Bluesy Mondays” featuring Nat Nat-Lee Kraemer vocals together with Fourie, Storm “Awesome” Thomas on drums, Byron Horn on bass guitar, Sheldon Sham on saxophone and Alon Israelson on piano. Their second full length album is on the way after signing a record deal with wired Sound Studio on the 14th of May 2012. Donovan hopes that through this album his listeners will be able to relate and learn from his experiences and in doing so connect them.

Why did you want to become a solo artist? I become a solo artist to have the freedom to wright and compose my own music the way I feel and not to be bound to a specific genre or style of music. Being a Solo artist also makes it easier to make my own decisions and to follow the vision that I have in my mind. Being a solo artists also open a lot of opportunities for me as a musician to be able to play my music whenever and wherever I feel like it for example busking on the streets or in parks and playing in venues such as coffee bars, food restaurants etc. Being a solo artists is also a good way for me to guarantee that my music will go on forever no matter what happens. What makes a solo artist different from playing in Energy Related, as it was a solo project in the beginning? Energy Related is my solo project backed up by session musicians. It’s not that the music is bound to a specific genre or that it doesn’t give me the freedom to collaborate with other artists. My solo career is basically keeping all my songs I have ever written alive. So when I have a full house band backing my songs the whole family becomes Energy Related. Apart from Energy Related I have my freedom to go out and play my music whenever and wherever I feel like to continue promoting the music and to pursue the mission. The Record deal with wired Sound Studio - When was the record deal signed?

What can listeners expect from the album? A piece of me and the way I look at life and all it has to offer. But it’s not all about me, I like to think that people can learn from my experiences and maybe find something good in it for them self’s. Where did the inspiration come for the Name of the Album? The name of the album is inspired by the fact that everybody is connected in some way or another. I believe that music connects people and can deliver a message more soulfully that talking or reading.

The record deal was signed in 14th May 2012 The songs that will be featured on the album? What was the deal clincher for the record deal? After we recording the song “she” for the Bluesy Mondays LP I was very impressed by the work done on the recording. MakeMore Records (the label Energy Related is signed by) then decided to come up with a proposal to discuss a record deal on behalf of Energy Related to record 31 songs over the next 13 months. What all is included in the Record Deal? The rerecording of the 13 track “Strings of Life” album. (The Album we originally recorded in September 2010). 10 track acoustic album with some songs off the “Strings of Life “album 8 track “Untitled” album we are currently working on. My solo Album (fire within) When did you decide to start the album? I decided to make this album while I was recording with Energy Related to take 8 of my favourite song from the “Strings of Life” album and record it as a personal memoir.

All the songs are inspired by events that have occurred in my life. Every song was written after or during an experience that changed my life in some way for the better. Take Mother like son, I wrote that song for my mother to say Thank you for all she has done for me and has taught and stood by me in times when things were rough. She taught me to be strong and thankful for everything that I have in my life. Energy Related album (strings of life) What kind of response did you receive after the release of this album? The response was amazing; we got a lot of positive feedback from people saying that it delivers a positive message and gave off good feeling. Some even said that it was the kind of album that you could put on repeat and take a long drive somewhere. Energy Related Lp (Bluesy Mondays featuring “She” and “ the track Bluesy Mondays”) “She” is written about people realizing that you don’t know what you have till it’s gone. Many people come into your life and then leave again, missing out on stuff after they have felt and always miss being in that space in time were they are I cluded in everything. “Bluesy Monday” is a song I collaborated with my lady Nat. It’s a song that relates to relationships with partners that work at different times on their passions while keeping a day job and still manage to share everything. Shall I listen to the tracks online and write a small feature on it? You can go have a listen and maybe wright a little something from your point of view The link will take you to the bluesy Mondays to listen or to download if you want to.

New “untitled “album that we are currently working on What will be different from the “Strings of life” album compared to the new album? My guitar and vocals has improved a lot since strings of life so I believe I’m putting out a smoother sound and I’m looking to do a couple of rock songs and adding electric guitar. More life experience has also gone into this album since the first one. What can fans expect to hear the tracks off this album? More positive messages that I hope will help someone somewhere to see life in a different perspective for a better good .My music is there to remind people to appreciate life and to enjoy what it has to offer ..

What’s your ultimate direction for your band, are you seeking fame and fortune? ANSWER: To be totally honest I don’t give a dam about fortune or fame…our ultimate goal is to travel the world and spread love, peace, to different cultures all across the globe, deliver a good massage and inspire people to live a free and happy lifestyle…when we die fortune and fame stays behind…ill rather leave a legacy

Inspired by pop-punk legends (including the likes of Blink-182 and Motion City Soundtrack), Shout Hey! set out on a quest, with the goal of making music, unaffected by the boundaries of genre labels. After leaving their previous 6-piece band, Army of Tomorrow (due to playing too many Nickelback covers), the three founding members (Matt, Tim & Jay) of Shout Hey! Launched themselves head-first into the Johannesburg music scene, hoping to make an impact on their audience's perception of indie/alternative/pop-punk bands. It wasn't long after they'd started gigging (with their notable stupid jokes and energetic stage presence) that Shout Hey! found themselves one percussionist short, as the much-loved drummer, Jay, left due to unforeseen circumstances. Following Jay's departure, primary songwriters and vocalists, Matt and Tim took some time to work on new material, while they searched for a new drummer, whom they found in their good friend, and previous Army of Tomorrow band mate, Brogan. Naturally, having played in a band with Brogan before meant that the two would work easily with him, and the next few band practices proved that being in a band is about more than just performing - it's about friendship, trust and loyalty.

As a band where did it all start? We (Matt, Tim and Jason) left our previous band - we played far too many Nickelback covers - to form our own 3-piece pop-punk/ alternative band, inspired by Blink-182 among others. We spent a few weeks practicing and coming up with a name. Our first idea had something to do with giraffes and gravity. In late October of 2010, we played our first gig at Cool Runnings in Fourways to all of five people. Huge crowd that night. Following Jay's departure earlier in the year, we sought out Brogan Muir (our good friend and former bandmate) to play drums for us and the rest is history.

Did you all come from a musical background? Yes, we were all part of the 6-piece alternative band (known by very few). We mostly played small shows, and didn't get very far, but taught us that a little elbow room is never something to complain about when playing in a band! We're glad we found our way into 'Shout Hey!' We all have slightly different musical upbringings, but we've all been playing guitar since we were about 13. Matt has been playing piano since he was 5 as well, and he picked up the bass about three years ago. Brogan has been drumming for about 2 days, or 18 months, one of the two.

Who are you, where are you from and what is your style? We're called Shout Hey! and we're an Indie pop-punk alternative band from Edenvale, Johannesburg. Our line-up is: Matt: Vocals and Bass Tim: Vocals and Guitar Brogan: Drums

Who is the songwriter in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? We have two vocalists and two primary songwriters - Matt and Tim. Songwriting is largely a communal effort though - we'll get to band practice and say, "Guys, let me show this idea for a song" and then we'll all contribute various ideas and bounce thoughts off each other. We get a lot of our inspiration from other pop-punk and alternative bands - namely Blink-182, Motion City Soundtrack, Angels and Airwaves, +44, All Time Low and many more. We all have our own "Top 10 bands" and they vary from happy-go-lucky pop -punk right through to heavier stuff. We're also big into our SA rock - some favourites are Wrestlerish, DanceYou'reOnFire, Plush, Gangs of Ballet, Zebra & Giraffe, ISO, Crashcarburn - there are literally too many to mention!

How long have you been playing together as a band? As the current line-up of Shout Hey!, we've been playing together for about seven months, but we've all been playing in a band - with or without each other - since 2010.

If I have never been to one of your gigs, what can I expect? Expect jokes - maybe some of them will be funny. Expect Matt wearing a large fuzzy hat, every time. Expect vocal harmonies everywhere. Expect perverted euphemisms and sexual references. And just expect a generally happy, pop-punky vibe with a side order of alternative and a splash of indie-ness.

Do you still get nervous when you go on stage? Yes, all the time - but once we get on stage we're fine. Except for that one time at Tanz...

Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? We usually just do a vocal warm-up (that time at Tanz was an exception...) and fill up on Red Bull. Other than that, we don't really perform any rain dances or sacrifices if that's what you mean.

What is your favourite Shout Hey! song? Tim: Insomniac Matt: Bedsheets Are My Favourite Colour Brogan: End of the World

Do you have an album out, if so, where can we get hold of it? We don't have an album out, but we're working on that! You can download our second single, "End of The World" for free, though - from our SoundCloud page, and we're heading into studio again with Mike from Zebra & Giraffe to record our third single, "Bedsheets Are My Favourite Colour" and possibly a fourth one, we'll keep you posted on that!

How can people get hold of you? They can Like us on Facebook - at facebook.com/shoutheyband They can follow us on Twitter - @shoutheyband and Instagram @shout_heyband We're also on SoundCloud, ReverbNation, MySpace and boom.fm

Interviewed by : Duwyne Clayton

Interviewed by : Duwyne Clayton With the release of Prime Circle’s new album we the press were invited to a listening session of the new songs just before launch date. We were invited to the SABC Studios and treated with an up close and personal listening session and then a press conference, or as Prime Circle put it, an interrogation. After the Press conference I was able to interview the band face to face and talk about the new anticipated album called Evidence. If you wondering why it is called Evidence then read the interview where all is revealed. Also don’t forget to check out the album review of this album in further on in this mag. Enjoy the interview guys!!!

Thanks so much for doing this interview guys. Now that the album is out, how has the response been? Ross: Pretty cool man, it’s been out about four days (at time of this interview) and I know a lot of the guys and CD dealers etc have been saying the album has been flying of the shelves and we are very happy with how people have been receiving it and the love we have been shown for this album so it’s been very cool.

Can you tell us about the buildup to the album, why was it called Evidence and what was up with all the interrogation talk, band members getting questioned just before the launch? The online social media campaign was interesting? Ross: Well we wanted it to be where we just leak a little bit of evidence now and again as a teaser and the whole evidence idea is actually 10 times bigger than what it ended up being but we still very happy with where it is. We wanted to each day bring out a little integration because with a new album launch sometimes you feel like you being interrogated by people and sometimes they want too much so the concept was to create awareness of the album in a fun way and bring out stuff little by little in a court case kind of a vibe, but now that the Album is out, we are still going to be releasing some stuff with this concept and it will all make sense in the end of why it is called evidence etc.

You been working very closely with the press with this album by inviting us to hear a few songs from the album then having “an interrogation” press conference afterwards, just how important is to work with the press? Ross: Well just to get the music out there is very important and the press helped us by doing that, although we did pull back a bit before the album, we decided not to be in the public eye and we would just do some shows and spend time in the studio etc, so it was important for us to get back into the public eye again and giving the press a chance to come in and listen to the songs etc helped to create a hype. Dirk: The press is important because they help us spread the word and one of the reasons we invited the press to the listening sessions was to let them hear what we doing and help us to give good reviews etc because if the guys enjoy it obviously they will write good things about us and they will help us in a constructive way

What makes this album different from your last albums? Ross: We can play better, it sounds weird but we can actually play our instruments a lot better, every time it’s been a constant progression, we looked at tones and sounds differently. Also its the people who we have worked with, we have worked with Theo Crous and Kevin Shirley before so we all know each other so well and no what buttons not to press, and we can swear at each other and climb in to it where it helps the songs in such a good way because we producing good music together

I am loving the song “time kills us all”, what is the meaning behind that song? Ross: It’s like an utopian feel on love, it’s sort of like we been on the road a lot and the kind of people who are in our lives or very important but are also very strong characters and we understand it, time in itself is very difficult but in a true love scenario and the way that song is specifically talking about it, is that you will wait till eternity for someone. But it’s also got a darker age to it as well, and we kind of looked at that and saying time will kill us all but we must try use of the time we have.

Who wrote the lyrics to all the songs on this album? Ross: Well I wrote all the lyrics and we all jumped in on the music and we all kind of went crazy on the songs. But the rest of the band also comment a lot like if a certain lyric doesn’t make sense or something then they will say go check that out. We play to our strengths so if something doesn’t sound cool or doesn’t make any sense, the band will make a point of it to me and then and I will go back check it out and then change it and ask their opinion again, and in that way it’s cool everyone has their finger prints on the music.

How long did it take to record this album? Ross: with pre-production a year and a half. Marco: Yea a year and a half then the recoring process probably took us about 4-6 months and we did the tracking from Cape Town so it’s just been up and down from Joburg to Cape Town travelling, So it took about six months and the after tracking ,it went through to L.A for mixing and then it went through to Australia for the mastering and then from there it went back to L.A and then back to South Africa so it was quite a long stretch till the final product is born.

“the press is important because they help us spread the word”

Ross: Yea the cool thing we had was this time, Dale our drummer had his studio up and running , so we had a luxury of just going into a studio and just laying down tracks and ideas of songs. And that makes it different from previous albums where you have to keep the songs in your head and to try get that same idea to lay it down is quite hard, at least with this album we could record ideas and spend time working on the songs without a huge time limit.

This question is for Dale and Neil, I wouldn’t say you are the new guys in the band because you been in the band for a while now, but being the latest to join the line up, do you feel settled in your job in the band with the making of this album, did you have much say? Dale: while yes the band has settled in now and this is the new Prime Circle you are seeing now, we had already pretty much settled in the previous album so with this album it’s just been about moving forward, the guys took us under the wings and now we flying altogether kind of thing. Ross: Nice pun there Dale lol Dale haha Neil: For me before I joined in on” All or nothing” the guys had two albums out and then from there it was two more albums and now this one, so I think I am more settled in probably than what Dale is but right now we are all just jamming together and enjoying making music together. Dirk: I would just like to say Dale and Neil are much as a part of the band as what Ross, marco and myself is so it’s not like anyone is better than the other one. Marco: obviously not financially I am still earning 90 percent of all the earnings hahha (That was a joke) Ross: We were saying it earlier Marco, Dirk and I, we were constantly looking for the perfect line up and this is to me the perfect line up, I feel the band is as old as its last two albums. Obviously we have released albums before that but the last two albums was this line up and that is so important to me. The reason you know when the guys have settled in is, is when they can swear at you, haha like the first year they keep quiet and just go about their ways, and then like a year later they are like.” You know what I don’t agree with you, you can kiss my ass or something like that lol Dale: Kiss my ass was actually a nice way of putting it Dirk: That’s more like the edited version of what they would actually say haha

With the album out now, will you be touring it; you got the December summer tour coming up and the march 2013 European tour? Dirk: Yea it’s like what you say we have got the December summer tour coming up or what we call the coastal tour in December in South Africa, and then we will do the Eurpean stuff in March but for a matter of fact Europe is on the cards for a few times next year and not only in March and then we will come back to South Africa and we start doing the inland gigs just to sort of finish the tour in South Africa. Marco: But like in the next two years, and this is how we do all our albums, we try and tour and promote the album as much as possible. We don’t just finish the tour and that is that. We constantly playing shows and starting new tours and playing the album as much we can before the next album comes out. Ross: So for the next two years or so the Road will be become our friend as we just tour this album full out.

Where can people get hold of the new album? Well in most good music stores, although there is some places that haven’t ordered or they sitting on their hands but I think 90 percent of the stores will have it in stock. But you can also get it at our shows and speaking of which we also launching a new merchandise selection as well which will be available at shows, which is going to be very cool, like the “King for the day logo” will be on shirts and that sort of thing. Marco: Yes if you want a bigger range of the merchandise then come to the shows where they will be on sale Dirk: We had a look at some of the merch that will be available and I must say it’s looking kickass so best you save some cash.

Well thanks very much for doing this interview guys. Thanks very much we appreciate it brother. Thanks dude

Interviewed by : Duwyne Clayton Dogtown released to the public early 2011. Combining multiple elements of passion, musical theory, energy and experience of the South African music industry. This Cape Town-based indie rock outfit has proven to be a major contender among local bands, attracting crowds of all ages and cultures. Dogtown is Bennie Van Der Merwe on vocals, Tyan Odendal on lead guitar, Sias Visagie on rhythm guitar, Nel is Uys on drums and JP Le Roux on bass. Making their way across local Cape Town music venues, including Mercury, Zula Bar, Purple Turtle, they made massive impressions on producers and venue owners. Dogtown's first big show was with aKING at Blizzards, Durbanville. Soon after that, they shared the stage with some of South Africa's biggest acts including Fokofpolisiekar, Graeme Watkins Project, Shadowclub and Van Coke Kartel. Dogtown then went on to play at Synergy 2011, after winning the LMG Synergy Live competition by gathering 571 Facebook "Likes" in one week's time. Dogtown is currently recording at Teejay Terblanche of CoffeeStainedVinyl Studios, full album to be released early 2012. With "Wembley Stadium" being their dream, it's hard to put their passion into words, to describe how these guys feel for music, and the amount of time they put into every show's preparation: “It’s never too late, to prepare yourself, for making musical history.''

Thank you so much for doing this interview, where did it all start as a band? We (Bennie, Sias and Nelis) just finished school, we we’re 19 and partying in Stellenbosch every week. We would always make some music with our guitars and bongo’s when we eventually got home. One night we started talking about how we can actually start a serious band, and we did. Do all of you come from a musical background? Not all of us come from families that have actual musical talents, but we all definitely grew up in a music loving environment and music is a big part of who we are.

Who is the songwriter in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? Bennie: “I get most of my inspiration from things that happen around me, things that challenge me. I guess our music is the way I deal with things. I try and make it fun to inspire people to avoid depressing moments and just forget about it. If I have never been to one of your gigs, what could I expect? You can really expect positive energy, catchy tunes and ass shaking everywhere. Do you still get nervous when you on stage? We are more excited to jam. By the time we ready ourselves to go on stage, we've been partying with everyone present, so we are in the vibe. That vibe can't be created without some crazy people.

Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? Not really, we have this weird habit of getting loud and jumping around asking one another if we’re ready for a kickass show, as we walk onto stage. Maybe grabbing a quick beer for the stage or drinking one last shot just to celebrate what we’re about to do I guess. You have just released your new single and video for Sunshine, what can you tell us about that song? Sunshine is a happy song, a feel good song. There’s a lot of our personality coming through in this song. We tried to make it sound careless, for those who won’t grow up… just like us. Live in the moment! Tell us about the shooting of the video? The shooting of the music video was very much unplanned, like most things in our life. We hired some gear and had three friends from AFDA help us out. We basically just walked around and took random shots at some very cool locations, this was what we wanted, we could all just be ourselves having a good time and getting it on camera to show people who we are. No big production… for now. Do you have an album out or anything in the pipeline? Besides this online EP release which is a total of six songs, we do have a full album planned for next year. “and in other news! “ Mango Groove at Old Mutual Summer Sunset Concerts at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens – Sunday 2 December 2012. Shake it up Cape Town, Mango Groove will be back in the mother city for their first and only 2012 show in Cape Town at Kirstenbosch Gardens on Sunday 2 December 2012. If their past two sold out concerts in these beautiful gardens are anything to go by, it is going to be one fun filled, super family afternoon with happy grooves, dancing and picnicking to Mango Groove`s greatest hits. Mango Groove and Claire have only performed a select number of shows in SA this year, as they have been busy on two very big projects: Mango Groove is currently working on a film and musical project: months of writing and pre-production so far, but a very important and long-term project for the group. In John’s words ‘’While we have a way to go yet, this is undoubtedly the biggest, most exciting and most challenging project we have ever worked on. Watch this space!’’ Claire has been busy for the last few months working on an all-new Claire Johnston album that is in essence a celebration of great South African songs through the decades. In Claire’s words: ‘’I am insanely excited about this project. It is a concept I came up with a while ago, and it has been great finally to get back into the recording studio. The album is very much a celebration of South African music, and to that it extent it has a strong Mango Groove influence. At the same time, however, it is also very different and distinctive, and I am hoping to surprise a lot of people with the treatment we have given to a lot of the songs. I will also be working with some of my favourite SA artists on key tracks, which will be a great honour for me. The album is due out early next year, and I will undoubtedly be following up with a number of key live performances built around the project’’. Their 2012 release: ‘’Shh: Have You Heard? The Ultimate Mango Groove Collection’’ is available in stores nationwide. This is a limited, collectors’ edition: that is a triple pack (2 CDs, 1 DVD). It features all the Mango Groove hits and videos. Note to editors: Rock the River SA was created out of the need for an alternative New Year’s Eve event, outside of the city, where fans could go relax and enjoy South African music in an intimate, safe and healthy environment. With Cape Town being widely regarded as the party destination of choice for many South Africans come year’s end, the options for non-mainstream professionally run events are far and few between, Rock the River SA has corrected this imbalance in an ever expanding market. REBURN to hit national airwaves REBURN just received word that their single “No Other Place” has been playlisted on 5FM! Infectious and upbeat, with a fierce energy that reverberates through every crowd they encounter, REBURN is a Cape Town based indie rock band on the cusp of ripping a hole in the space/time continuum. And now the band, made up of front man Scottie Moore, Alex McFarlane (guitar/vocals), Craig Hermanus (guitar/vocals), Quinton van Rooyen (bass) and Wade Brown (drums), are ready to release another single in January. Fans can expect another exceptionally well-produced song that will have fans and new converts alike shaking more than just a tail feather. Already playlisted on MFM, PUK FM, UCT Radio, Two Oceans Vibe, Zone Radio, Voice of Wits and reaching the number one spot on Bush Radio’s chart, "No Other Place" is the first single off their new album to hit the airwaves. The track was produced by UKbased producer John Fortis who has worked with award winning artists Razorlight, The Prodigy and Paulo Nutini, and was able to distill REBURN's distinct UK sound, without arriving at a product that would alienate South African audiences. The single was recorded at Heritage Sound Studio’s by Brendyn “Rusti” Rossouw who has worked with artists such as Taxi Violence and Ard Matthews and was mixed and mastered by none other than South African heavyweight Neal Snyman. Listen to the single , and see a Boom.fm performance featuring "No Other Place" . Fans can look forward to a series of singles in following months, with an album drop in 2013. After a stellar performance from REBURN at Rock the River SA last year, they are planning on an even bigger and better show this time round. Catch them on the main stage, for more details about the festival see below.

the 5th annual

CAPE TATTOO EXPO (Southern Ink Xposure 2013)

January 25 - 27, 2013 at Cape Town City Hall Now going into its fifth year, the Cape Tattoo Expo has evolved into the most important lifestyle festival of its kind on the African continent. With a greater range of top international tattoo artists attending and a very exciting arts and concert event schedule, next year`s Cape Tattoo Expo promises to be the best one yet. The 2013 festival will be held at the iconic Cape Town City Hall. Event organizers Manuela and Allan Gray are thrilled with the new venue: “We are very excited. The event has grown significantly over the past few years and City Hall is the perfect space for the size and vibe of the expo. For the first time we can host all of the related events: the expo, art exhibition and concerts under one roof. About the Cape Tattoo Expo: It was back in 2009 that renowned tattoo artist Manuela Gray realised a dream of putting together an international tattoo convention on South African soil. Held at the CTICC, the inaugural event was attended by more than 75 artists, amongst them some of the brightest stars in international skin ink. For the 5 500 members of the public who attended the first event it was a clear sign that tattoos and tattoo culture had outgrown the stigma of being a ‘fringe’ or ‘backstreet’ art form and found its place in mainstream society. Over the following four years, the event attracted scores more top international artists to the Cape shores, to the point where artists from over thirty countries have attended. In 2013, Southern Ink Xposure will again bring the best in global tattoo culture and lifestyle. Attendees can look forward to thrilling in the artworks of big-name international convention “regulars” such as Bob Tyrrell (US), Laura Juan (Spain), Randy Englehard (Germany), Robert Hernandez (Sp/Pol), Mark Bester (UK), as well as the very best that South Africa has to offer. Ticket sales: A day pass will cost R100 (which, for the first time, includes admission to expo concerts), and an all-access weekend pass R250. Tickets will be available through the Cape Tattoo Expo website and select retail outlets nationwide from 26 November 2013.

Visit www.capetattooconvention.co.za for updates about attending artists, pre-convention concerts, competitions, and info. Also be sure to join the Southern Ink Xposure and Cape Town International Tattoo Convention facebook and Twitter groups for all the latest news about related events and artist info. The Johnny Cash Pilgrimage Tour: December 2012 “We had an American at the Il Giardino show who knew Johnny Cash and she praised the performance. The

show is authentic and unpretentious, a must see for every music lover.” ~ Ann Toerien, partner at Take Note Productions. “I closed my eyes and for a while there it felt like I was part of that now infamous Folsom prison audience, the band went through a lot of trouble to recreate that sound we all love, a great night was had by all.” ~ Madeleine Townsend, social coordinator, Pirates bowling club. “My sincere condolences to anybody who’s planning to miss this show.” ~ Philip Moolman, owner at the Blou Hond Linden, Johannesburg. “The show is worth your Cash.” ~ Hein, owner at the Vulture Club, Bloemfontein. Pilgrimage, a journey made to a place as a mark of respect. With this in mind, five musicians convened earlier this year to find out exactly where that place was. Their subject matter was an artist who filled his 70 years on this earth with a staggering amount of music. The Man in Black was there for the birth of Rockabilly in the 1950’s, sharing the stage with the likes of Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and others. He soldiered on for another five decades, the eternal rebel forever at odds with the corporate record industry and other authoritative figures. The eighties weren’t exactly kind to him but his ‘American recordings’ project brought him back to prominence and served as a fitting farewell from a man who touched many a life. Johnny Cash, as his famous song suggests, did indeed stand up for the unlucky, the reckless ones, the poor and the beaten down. While the show features some of his later work, the Johnny Cash Pilgrimage felt that the bulk of the performance should consist of the now signature Tennessee Three-sound, that wonderful music most famously documented on the ‘live at Folsom Prison’ album. A time that featured songs about love, hardship, hope, joy, trains, prisoners, cowboys, good and bad women, and of course the odd serious crime and the inevitable consequence of such actions. All the members of the band are Johnny Cash fans and consider the show to be a labor of love. A lot of effort has gone in to recreating that magical era and the sound that influenced many a musical journey, including their own. The ninety minute set includes highlights that will please both the casual fan and Cash connoisseurs. So, whether you saw the movie and fell in love with ‘Ring of Fire’ or discovered ‘the wreck of the old 97’ in your parent’s record collection, we guarantee a good night out on the tiles. The journey ends when we all feel better about ourselves, was that not the great man’s intention all along?

The band Louis Graham and Brixton Barnard supply the no nonsense solid backbeat on drums and bass while Pat Plank pays tribute to the unique guitar style of the great Luther Perkins. Stepping up to the mike is Gert Barnard, a man who has lived and breathed Johnny Cash for most of his life. He bears a striking resemblance to the man in question.

Hello my little Punks and Punkettes!! I cannot believe yet another year is coming to an end and we are in December already!!! I hope you are all ready for the Christmas season and that the spirit captures all of you and inspires you to do something nice for those less fortunate than you are. We often get so caught up in this busy season that we tend to forget what it is all really about, the best gift that you can give yourself is allowing yourself to feel the joys that the gift of giving allows you to feel. I have some different interviews for you to enjoy, so get reading!!! I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas. Thank you to our whole team, especially the Chief and Emmylicious!! The magazine would be nothing without the two of you and I love you both! Thanks to all the amazing photographers, clothing designers and bands that have given me the pleasure of showing me their many talents, I wish you all the greatest success imaginable. I would also like to thank my beautiful family, wonderful friends and my amazingly handsome boyfriend Nic for all their support and love that they have given me. Last but not least, Thank you to all you crazy and quirky readers who inspire us to keep going every single month. We are on the road to success and I am so blessed to have you all in my life. Feliz Natal para todos! Hobo Hugs X x

Coffee Shop Poetry‌‌ A feeling of peace surrounds the town, Love and delight diminish the busy thoughts of the people, The season of blessings and giving is here, Children in the streets smiling and spreading cheer, Do not forget the man under the bridge next to your home, Who is cold and tired and feels alone, Perhaps a plate of hot food and a blanket will fill his soul with cheer. Do not forget the petrol attendants or car guards, Who have to work through the nights, Perhaps a generous tip will help their small dreams come true. Spread your love as well as your time, The feeling of helping those less fortunate, Will be better than receiving lavish gifts that will soon sit in a cupboard.

Felix Stonewall

LIONEL BASTOS I am about to expose you all to an incredible man that really sets the standard for beautifully crafted music. Lionel Bastos is a man of many talents; his words will intrigue and capture your souls as these words allow you to tap into his inner thoughts. Happy reading kiddos! x

Your lyrics are so amazing. I often just save them on my phone and read them over and over because they are perhaps the most beautiful poems I have ever read. How do you come up with such amazing songs? I hear a word or see a scene and sometimes it’s something that’s happening in my life but sometimes not. I have a very vivid imagination and because my first language wasn’t English and I had access to Portuguese and Brazilian music, I loved the way the Brazilians played more with words. I also love reading, especially good writers like Clive James and Martin Amis, so a lyric is like painting a picture but you do it with words. It happens so quickly though, so I really just hear these lines in my head with music and afterwards edit the words in places, if they jar the melody. It’s like a download in a way. I’ll be driving or just practicing guitar and I hear these words and a melody and have to write them down really quickly or sing into my phone. It’s almost effortless. Also I make sure it’s LYRICAL. It needs to flow on the melody. A poem is not a lyric: it doesn’t need to float on a note. If poems were lyrics then there’d be songs written to Yeats, Burns, Shakespeare etc and that’s the reason there aren’t songs to those poems. Tell us about your feelings regarding the music industry. The music industry is tough. Everyone wants to be a rock star but no one wants to carry gear or be verbally ( sometimes physically ) abused by drunkards in pubs. I think idols and X-factor are crimes. Those kids get the best band, the best make up, best lighting, more publicity than they’ll ever get again and have to impress with half a song. That’s not reality at all.

When you perform to an audience anywhere you have to keep their attention and interest for at least an hour and a half and that takes so much more than singing your best for 2 minutes. Singing for 2 minutes in perfect conditions is very different to carrying gear, setting it up yourself, getting your sound right and doing 4 x 45 minute sets in a bar and keeping people there. Even if you’re a star and don’t have the gear issues, you still have to hold an audience captive for an hour and a half and even before that, you have to get them to buy tickets to your show. Easy if you’ve had tons of exposure on TV but if you aren’t a contestant on one of those shows, exposure at that level costs hundreds of thousands of whatever currency the country you live in, uses. Are you excited for the Christmas season? I think it’s great for kids. Though, I have to say it is very nice to have all the family in one place and sharing love and laughter and reminiscing. That’s the best part. So are you a proud Porra?;) I’m proud of my heritage though I must say that more often than not I like to add that I’m Mozambican. But there’s a very safe feeling in the European cultural base of family ties. Even though there was a different mentality in the colonies (lighter, more fun than the mainland I think) there was still that family unity thing which is beautiful and safe.

Can you please name some of your greatest achievements? My children, who have grown up to be amazing adults who are well-mannered, kind, considerate and levelheaded ( most of the time ) and are doing very well for themselves. As far as music goes, I’ve performed on every continent and opened for Tina Turner in Europe, Wet, Wet, Wet at Sun City and the Bee Gees at Loftus the year I won a SAMA for Best Adult Contemporary album. I have been nominated for 3 SAMA’s directly and albums I’ve produced have been nominated for 7 more and I’ve had nominations in Europe and worked with, produced albums for, and written songs for many of the top names in S.A and artists in Europe, so I’m blessed. I think as an achievement, I’d like to say that I constantly work at what i do and keep developing new techniques so have become a better performer as the years have passed. Who inspires you the most in life? I’m not sure. There’s no single person. Life and its ups and downs inspire me. I see and hear things and songs come to me. Love inspires me. But so does pain and suffering, both my own and that of others hence the AIDS song “Let it be love”, the Haiti earthquake benefit song “I’ll be there” and my anti Beijing Olympics song “Tears falling in Tibet”. My friends say I’m a modern day wannabe Don Quixote because I’m an idealist. What do you want most for Christmas? World peace? No betrayals? I want to spend it with the people I love. I’d love a new car and a house in the countryside and a Powerball lottery win, but mostly I want the people I love to be OK. Though it would be a bonus if everyone was OK. Any exciting plans for next year? I have songs on the new Auriol Hays CD, the new Tshepo Tsola album coming out next year and PJ Powers is recording “Dum dum” off my recent CD as her new single and it’s due for release throughout Europe plus Wendy Oldfield and I may do a tour of South Africa starting in March. PJ is looking at gigs in Maputo and maybe Angola so there’s a lot in the pipeline. I also have plans for a song and maybe full album with some well known S.A artists and would love to do a CD with choirs from underprivileged areas and try to give them something they could sell at performances to raise money for themselves. It would be great to do a new album after that but we’ll see what happens. I don’t mind if the songs all get taken by artists. The love I have is for the music, not for the fame so I don’t have to record them all. I think I make albums because there are so many songs that I need to get some of them out there so they have a chance to be heard. There’s an exciting video project but right now I can’t give anything away about that haha Thank you

I have had the pleasure of watching No Fly Zone many times, and I never get tired of jamming along to their tight sets and amazing talent. Each member masters their instruments and they know how to capture the attention of any type of crowd, what with their catchy songs or their quick wit. Thank you to Justin Barker for the beautiful pictures of the boys! Enjoy guys!! XX

Give us a run down on each member of No Fly Zone! No Fly Zone are Rob Stories on Vocals and Rhythm Guitar, Steve Murray on Lead Guitar, Roly Struckmeyer on Bass Guitar and Andy Makins on Drums. We all sing backing vocals too. Are you all ready for the Christmas season? Yes, we have managed to book a lot of corporate functions and our regular gigs are still going strong. What is on the top of each of your Christmas lists? Rob would like a bed, Steve an aeroplane, Roly a new car and Andy a new electric kit from Yamaha pleeeaaase. Who is the craziest in the group? (This is a tough one cause I know you all are slightly insane;)) Hands down Andy!! Describe what it's like when you're performing? We all love performing, even though this is our full time job it never gets old. It’s a new experience every time even though we are playing covers. Have you guys had any crazy fan moments?? We have ended up in a Jacuzzi with a fan haha – that was fun, Roly can tell you more about that sometime When did you decide to start the band and how did you all meet? We have all been in the music scene for a long time (except for Rob, he was going to be the next Wayne Ferreira haha.), so we have all played in other projects, some together and some not. No Fly Zone started just over a year ago. We really just wanted to play good songs that people know and get it sounding as close to the record as possible. Why do you keep the band going, even through all the tough times? No one else would employ us. Name a few of your inspirations! If you catch one of our shows I think the material we play would give you a good idead, Foo Fighters (Dave Grohl, what a man), Queen and the Red Hot Chili Peppers – there are many artists that inspire us, new and old. What do you all do to relax (besides drink;))? Rob sleeps, he’s so tired! Steve plays flight simulator and is slowly getting up in the sky doing the real deal. Roly loves to go for long walks and meditate on the beach and Andy is never scared of a XBOX session.

INTERVIEW BY: DANIELA DE ALMEIDA

Your band is one of the tightest and most talented bands I've had the pleasure of watching, so where can we watch some gigs? Thanks so much!! We are at Stokers Arms in Kloof every Thursday and Someplace Else in DBN North every Friday. Saturdays we play at different venues like the rugby, but you can catch all that on Facebook - NO FLY ZONE (S.A. Party Band) Any messages for your fans? We would just like to thank everyone, the response has been amazing and a special thanks to the crew that pulls into Stokers every Thursday – Duck and co. And Roly is single.

Lucy Kruger Johannesburg album launch I was invited to attend the album launch of talented musician Lucy Kruger. Now Lucy Kruger is no stranger when it comes to Fanbase Music Mag as we got the opportunity to interview her in our last Issue last month (Issue 22). So it was an honor to be able to attend her Album launch at Tanz Café. As I got to Tanz Café I was just in time for the first opening act, Sub Urban Roots who really put on a great performance. I have never heard of this band before and it was my first time seeing them play live and I must say I was impressed. They have a unique sound and I definitely want to hear and find out more about this band. Next up was one of my favorite musicians at the moment, I am talking about none other than Justin Serrao who you can also read up about in the last issue of Fanbase Music Mag. It was also my first time seeing Justin play live although I have heard him on the radio and I have one of his CD’s, but let me tell you watching this boy play live is defo a must as he is an awesome live performer. With just him and his guitar this guy can really get the crowd going with his laid back yet strong acoustic sound. I urge all of you to get hold of Justin Serrao’s CD or go to one of his gigs. You won’t be disappointed at all. Next up was the moment we’ve all been waiting for. It was time for Lucy Kruger to take the stage. I was pleasantly surprised to see her whole band joined her on stage. There is nothing bad I can say about this lady, her stage performance is as powerful and vibrant as her new album “Cut those strings”. Lucy’s stage presence is awesome as she sang through each song pleasantly and perfectly. Her voice is of an innocent angel, she is definitely one of the best singers this country has to offer. Speaking to Lucy after the gig she said she wasn’t too happy with the sound but I can confidently say from where I was sitting in the audience, she sounded phenomenal. She really is a great singer, songwriter and performer. She opened up her set with one of my favorite songs called “Four white walls” which is making big airwaves on the radio stations around South Africa. One of my other favorite songs is called “Fired up” which is upbeat and vibrant and hearing it live amongst the whole set was really cool to experience.

I would like to congratulate Lucy on a very successful Johannesburg Album Launch and a very beautifully written album. If you haven’t got the album yet then make sure you get hold of the album real soon. You can get your hands on the album by, Online shipping: http://www.independentmusic.co.za/artists/lucy-kruger Digitally: http://lucykruger.bandcamp.com/ The album is also available at Mabu Vinyl on Kloof; The African Music Store on Long Street and Classix on Cd in Stellenbosch.

Another metal packed month has passed and here we are with Fanbase Music Magazines second installment of Full Metal Panic, with Christmas around the corner and the festive season looming on the horizon the entertainment world will be bursting with an assortment of gigs, festivals and tours to fill the avid rockers calendar, this is no exception for the metal fans either; In the December issue I have the pleasure to present an insightful interview with Grahamstowns core-kings, The Devil Sent Me Back. Vocalist Colin Nass gave me some insight to what TDSMB expects from their upcoming Western Cape tour in January 2013. For the old school thrashers I take a look at one of South Africa's longest running bands; ING the history that makes the band and the times I have experienced with the ING, however brief it may have been. To end off my December issue of Full Metal Panic I get my hands dirty with Zombies ate my Girlfriend's Patient Zero dĂŠbut EP, a most ominous look at the despair and musical brilliance of heavy metal art work. Season greetings and all that, till next year. Ryno de Lange. \M/

The Devil Sent Me back, a 5-piece metalcore outfit hailing from Grahamstown, Eastern Cape have set on their way to reaching their goal of spreading their music across to other die hard headbangers beyond the Eastern Cape boarders. TDSMB will be embarking on a two week tour across the Western Cape on the 11th January 2013 till the 26th of January 2013 alongside Betray the Skyline (Port Elizabeth) and We Seek Vengeance (East London/Cape Town). I had the pleasure of interviewing TDSMB’s front-man Colin Nass to find out who TDSMB are and what he and the band are expecting from their “Animals Unleashed Cape Tour”.

All bands start out from an idea or a few guys sitting around that wants to do what they loving doing most; making some metal. Can you give us a brief story of how TDSMB’s formed their concept of establishing a band? I came to Rhodes with the intention of being in a band. Wound up in res with Jason who was a general badass rolling around playing some random beats wherever he could and wearing cool band shirts. Him and I were dead set on making a band and were stoked we’d found other metal heads in res. It was pretty much out of necessity for us. There were no two ways about it, there was going to be a band. I find it interesting to know how band members have found each other to create bands or join bands. How did the TDSMB members come across each other or join the band? Well, Jason and I started scouring the underbelly of Grahamstown looking for guitarists and bassists who would be keen. After one night on the town we had found a lady bass player, Cal Thompson. We were now determined to get the full band together and employed Nick Smuts to play guitar. We were still a guitarist down but started practicing anyway. Soon afterwards we found the great Craig Albers who completed our band of miscreants. We played our first gig at a tattoo convention, which was spectacularly awful in light of our performances now, and in the audience was our current bassist Ross Ford. After a while of stagnation we decided a change was necessary and got Ross onboard, he never played bass, which gave us a solid line up of dedicated guys. At the end of the year Nick left us to pursue an education in sound engineering. We called up Cheyne Weddel who had filled in for Nick before and who currently is our incredibly talented lead guitarist. TDSMB is a core band with various metal influences; what other metal influences does the band incorporate to their music the most? The influences vary constantly depending on what we’re listening to. A lot of our music is influenced by some hard gallops and old school/new school breakdowns. Melodic metal is a fixed influence for us as well as some other genres like hardcore punk and straight up hardcore. How long has TDSMB been active in the local metal scene in Grahamstown/ East London area and can you give the readers in other parts of South Africa an idea of what the scene is like in TDSMB part of the woods?

Ryno de Lange

TDSMB has quite an enthusiastic and professional manager, were did the band come across Candice and what is her background with the band?

Interview by :

We’ve been active for nearly two years. First gig was March 2011. The metal scene is currently lacking in these parts, but we hope that by constantly connecting with other bands we can build up the scene from the inside out. GO SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC!!

The year is almost at its end; what has been TDSMB highlight of 2012?

Interview by: Ryno de Lange

We were super lucky that Craig had a really smart and dedicated girlfriend ;) Candice had seen us play and she dug our sound. We dug the fact that she dug us and we decided it wouldn’t hurt to have someone managing this group of oversized children. It was and is a blessing that she takes care of us and our band name and never lets us down. Thanks to her we are where we are today. TRUTH.

This year got off to a slow start but ended with a bang. Any gig we play is a massive jam for us and will always be what we look forward to, but the biggest highlight must be the release of our debut self produced E.P and winning battle of the bands.

Many bands occasionally witness rather odd and crazy things at gigs; can TDSMB share some of the things you may have witnessed or experienced during an event? Boobs. Druken stage handstands. Blood. Speakers falling on guitarists because of mental crowd!! Boobs. Most recently a fire breather nearly setting us on fire while playing our set. They all are kinda self explanatory. If you can imagine a scenario we’ll agree that it totally happened. TDSMB recently released their début EP “Animals” which is a big mile stone in any bands career; how did the band go about recording a quality EP? Guitars were recorded in Cape Town by our previous guitarist Nick Smuts in his home, uhm, studio? Pretty much just used single input recording interfaces for both guitars and vocals. Had usage of some really cool mics from a studio in Grahamstown and used sampled drums for the drum parts. Nick mixed the tracks and I mastered them. It’s a start for us. It’s only going to get better. Our new single “A Sunny Day In Hell” proves it. I have noticed that the metal scene can be quite divided by metal genres; is there any of that going on in Grahamstown area, or is the scene mixed amongst each other? In Gtown, we are literally the only metal band in the scene at the moment. So no, no metal genre wars are going on. That may make it a whole lot more exciting if there were. Who are the bands that TDSMB plays with the most and the local bands that compliment TDSMB sound and vice versa? We have played with several out-of-town bands like Betray The Skyline, We Seek Vengeance, The Truth And Its Burden, The Dead Will Tell and Facing The Galllows. These all more than once. I would say Betray The Skyline is the closest band we have to our sound that we’ve played with and they are all really good guys.

TDSMB will be touring the Western Cape In January 2013; what venues and areas will you be most looking forward to rocking out at?

What advice does TDSMB have for any young metal bands that have just started out?

Stoked for EVERYWHERE!! But Gandies is one of my personal favourite places to have a jam so I’m really excited for ROAR.

Push the envelope. Stick to what you love and don’t let stupid shit hold you back. If you truly want to achieve something in this industry it’s only throistence and dedication. Work bloody hard

Can you give the readers a bit of information on the supporting acts that are set to tour alongside TDSMB, Betray The Skyline the official tour supporting act and We Seek Vengeance who will be playing as a supporting act on four of the shows on TDSMB; Animals Unleashed Cape Tour? Both bands are always gonna be ready to blow you away. Betray The Skyline offer you some intense balls-to-the-floor-core and We Seek Vengeance are definitely an eargasm for the folks who love some intricate shredding. Both deliver maximum energy and will leave you wanting a whole lot more of some tasty jams. How has TDSMB seen the South African music metal industry grow into the respective young industry it is today? Being a fledgling band ourselves we have experienced a definite increase in musicians who play metal and do it well. The industry is now offering many opportunities for young bands to be recognized in various aspects. Festivals are now reaching out to build up local talent in order to compete with global market, which is a sign of it growing well. We just need to see an increase in South Africans appreciating their own local talent a whole lot more. Not bitching, just stating facts here. What does TDSMB have planned for 2013 other than the “Animals Unleashed” tour? A whole lot of gigs and a strong focus on writing our full length. Which involves developing and maturing our own unique sound.

Who would TDSMB like to thank? Everyone who comes to the gigs and all the support from people who have downloaded our E.P. All the bands who play with us, all the venues who will have us (Mike at Champs), Ryno

“in Gtown, we are literally the only metal band in the scene at the moment. So no, no metal genre wars are going on."

and Event Horizons, Candice , Betray The Skyline and We Seek Vengeance for joining us on the tour and all the bands who have influenced us and given us a reason to make music. And I (Craig) would personally also like to thank Colin, Jason, Ross, Cheyne and Nick for being my brothers in metal.

I first heard of Zombies Ate My Girlfriend when my ears were met by an overly eager friend who had witnessed ZAMGF début appearance at M4A.com's Winterfest. My curiosity could not help but entice me to find out what the hype and excitement was all about and a while after and I had become one of the infected swarm; gnawing, biting and hoarding for more ZAMGF. You can imagine the excitement I had to endure when I was asked to write a review for ZAMGF début EP "Patient Zero" which is surly starting to become a house hold name in many fine metal-heads homes. Chaos erupts and explodes into an energetic rush of melodic grooves and thunderous drum beats with Patient Zero's first track titled "Deathworm" a prick in the thumb for some and a breath of fresh air for others. There is no holding back with ZAMGF and their relentless straight forward attitude of sharing their opinions and views. Some may disagree with their blatant harsh lyrical content and subjects that are either highlighted or hated upon by ZAMGF but I for one appreciate their onslaught of honesty and use of artistic expression. ZAMGF dwells into various different topics and; despair, politics, euphoria of dark emotions. ZAMGF are not for the faint of heart, musically and lyrically they have exceeded themselves in so many twisted forms. With all the members of ZAMGF with previous experience in other bands from early ages it is no wonder that ZAMGF have such a tight construction of musicianship. The quality of ZAMGF music (brave of me to state perhaps) is off much higher quality than a good portion of our local metal bands. "Whatever Forever" the second track on the Patient Zero EP takes a sullen look at personal human weakness and over coming the attributes that weighs us down as individuals, or it could be about how weak humans are in general. I would say its one of those songs that is open to interpretation by the individual. My favourite track on the Patient Zero EP. Tormented musical brilliance, a real sucker punch to the ear drums; "Silent Night" sets a blank canvas for the music pallet to paint a portrait of self – loathing self destruction, a morbid tale beginning with a catchy riff spilling out into the ear drums casting one down a rapid river stream only to be lunged out at the other side of the waterfall to be ensnared in ZAMGF hypnotic orchestration of the reality of human emotions and personal struggle, something to spark those nightmares. Patient Zero ends of with "Robert Carlyle" the story of Don Harris, actor Robert Carlyle's character from the zombie movie 28 Weeks later; facing a dire situation of saving himself or having he's wife been eaten by a swarm of zombies. The Patient Zero EP is surely a gem in any metal heads collection who has the pleasure of owning Patient Zero. ZAMGF released Patient Zero in July at M4A.com's Winterfest and has ever since been making its rounds in the underground media, gaining ground and having only played their début show in July have become popular amongst the scene in a short manner of time. Patient Zero was recorded at Burning Tone Studios. As Adriano Rodriguez, the mastermind of ZAMGF and sole composer of Patient Zero said in a previous interview I conducted with him; "It's a collection of tracks I've been working on for the last three years. I think it’s definitely some of the music I’ve written thus far and I’m very proud of the end product.". Zombies Ate My Girlfriend's Patient Zero album is available to stream on Facebook. Contact information to order Patient Zero is also available on their Facebook page. - http://www.facebook.com/ Zombiesgirlfriend EP review. By Ryno de Lange/Full metal Panic

METAL THAT MATTERS

With more than a decade past since the controversial thrash machine ING formed in 1999 with forming members Henk Kruger and Brian Villain in Durban along with Jason and Jamie. ING thrashed the Durban clubs for a year, pitching up their own make shift stages and sound as back in the days most music venues were not equipped for live metal bands. Afterwards ING split ways as Bryan left for Cape Town shores and Jason for Australia. ING regrouped in 2005 and released their first EP “It’s a hate thing”in 2008 which gained ground with Metal4Africa who then invited ING to perform at M4A wintersfest in 2008 and a short while afterwards at Witchfest. A year afterwards and ING went into studio for their first full length debut album "It's a sick thing" which was only released in 2010 due to ING taking a brief break to participate at Subternias Whiplash 2009. ING have gone from strength to strength through the years enduring hardships of laying dormant for a while and struggling to find a set drummer after migrating to Cape Town during the time of ING reunion in 2005. Thirteen years have past since ING establishment in '99 and we are on the brink of 2013, ING have re-emerged with the brutal release of their second studio album "INGquisition" and are steadily climbing their way back to the top of the old school thrash ladder. I welcome you to the revolutionary metal world of ING. Back when I was a young teen thrasher, seventeen and clueless about local metal to be honest, I attended Robertson Rocks Music Festival in 2006, now hardly anyone would remember this festival as it had such a short run, I was browsing the Subterania merchandise stall, which was also my first time I had actually laid my eyes on local metal bands merchandise not knowing any of the local metal bands back then, I picked up a Whiplash Subterania flyer and gazed at the logos of the bands playing my eyes caught a slogan "Its a hate thing" and above that "ING". This was my first time I had ever heard of ING and the rest of the bands on the Whiplash flyer, little did I know back then that I would have the fortune of working alongside ING, even for a brief while. My personal encounter with ING began earlier this year in August when I hosted my small pub-festival The Right to Rock 2;Metal Rising, at the time I was in the process of booking Junkyard Lipstick, an angry female thrash outfit. The bands manager and drummer; Lucinda Viljoen, Brians wife suggest that I get ING onto the bill. A while down the line and there I was shaking hands with a tower of a man, long black hair hanging over a patched biker vest; Henk Kruger ING's guitar maniac introduced himself to me and afterwards we shared a bit of guitar talk, Henk proudly showed me hes Ibanez (not sure what model) and had a brief discussion about their INGquisition album. I have always enjoyed going ballistic to metal bands such as ING who focus their music on current affairs and a bit of the odd as well.

From the early days of ING they have not dwelled far from their original message and concept to write dark sarcastic, tong in cheek attitude whilst confronting certain subjects that society overlooks or wishes to ignore and to not discriminate in hate. ****PART 2**** With South Africa in minor political turmoil with ANC youth league's ex-president Julius Malema stirring up the apartheid hornets nest. ING decided to take siege of their home studio "Jihad Records" to concentrate on producing a true South African single titled Julius Malema, a satire Holocaust on the ex-youth league president. Not wanting to get into too much trouble with my Editor and not getting carried away either I'll put my focus towards ING's music. Marius Theron's constructive blast beats and Darren Web's constant deep bass grooves complemented by Bryan Villains spitting grawl biting at the heels of the power that be and Henk Krugers maestro fingers caressing hes Ibanez into a blissful euphoria of chaos and extreme anarchy of which lays the back bone for a mosh-pit smashup of speed metal, 80's thrash, death metal and good old South African attitude and humor. As twisted as it may seem ING are veteran musicians of the old guard. Before the flood of underage emo's and scene kids sneaking into gigs to watch their favorite core or scene band, long before the music scene had any decent stage for underground bands to perform on and before the time were ones hair style and fashion was more important than the ability of the band on stage; ING was establishing a scene for the goal of playing the music they loved and sharing their opinions whilst having fun and playing metal that matters. It is clear that ING are more musically assure, professionally equipped and more bad a## than ever before, setting an example for the younger generation of South African metal bands. . Catch ING at R.O.A.R. Observatory on the 15th of December 2012 on the Shajol and Boargazm Nation Wide Tour and on the metal stage on new years eve 2012/13 at Rock The River Music Festival. Join ING on Facebook - http://www.facebook.com/ingtheband

The Mexican-American singer-songwriter known simply as, “Rodriguez" had been working on his music career in Detroit since the early 1960s. He recorded an album in 1969 that many believed was going to secure his reputation as one of the greatest recording artists of his generation. Instead, Cold Fact bombed and the Rodriguez seemingly disappeared into obscurity, even being subject to rumours that he had committed suicide by setting himself on fire onstage and other imaginative tales. The album took on a life of its own when a bootleg recording found its way into our own South Africa. Banned by the Apartheid government, the album became a nationwide phenomenon over the next two decades, and the soundtrack to a resistance movement of liberal African youth. Back in Detroit, living a hardscrabble life, Rodriguez was totally unaware that he was not just a folk hero but a household name thousands of miles away. Eventually, two South African fans then set out to find out what really happened to their hero, and their investigation led them to a story more extraordinary than any of the many myths they’d heard. Their story forms the basis of the recently released documentary Searching For Sugarman which was a big hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival where it won the world documentary audience award and a special jury award, and it received fantastic reviews at this year’s SXSW, Tribeca film festival, Sydney film festival and several others around the world. By chance a strange thing happened. It happened in a way that such things usually happen – which is to say that it could very easily not have happened. But it did when David Vermeulen and Gabriel Buchalter turned to each other and said “Dude, let’s make some music happen. “It was the beginning of 2011 and South Africa was caught somewhere between thriving after the Soccer World Cup and being slightly depressed due to all the excitement now being over. DV and GB sat between a bed, desk, several guitars and a million cables. Making music happen is as easy as it is difficult, but it happened. Their first gig as a duo was so mind-bogglingly uneventful that no one can actually remember where it was. Their second gig was much the same, but ten gigs became twenty and twenty became more. They needed a name and devised the anagram “Dividable Grand” from the words “David and Gabriel”. They were men on a mission – they were no longer nameless, and they had a purposeful purpose. Their on-stage performance improved and the crowds grew bigger. They had a NAME. Sitting down one evening, DV and GB found their first bit of inspiration that sparked another happening. In just two hours they wrote their first full song – and it was a good song. Two months later, the song started off a set that changed Dividable Grand – changed their mind-set, their drive. There were a few hundred people at the Hoekwil Rocks Music Festival. During their set the crowd drew nearer, people started dancing, people started cheering, girls started screaming, the promoter asked them to perform for an extra thirty minutes and some bloke who won Idols asked to use DV’s guitar. The performance also resulted in Dividable Grand being booked for other key festivals. In November 2011 DV was recording a few demos at a local studio and asked girl-drummer Lindi Van Blerk to do a session. They have jammed before, she is – simply put brilliant and GB agreed. And so LvB (whose name can conveniently be found in the band's anagrammatically name) became a permanent member of Dividable Grand, and the duo became a trio… This could be a happy ending, but of course, this is not an ending. It is merely the beginning. September 2012 will see the release of "The Buzz" – their much anticipated debut album whilst the band tours South Africa in support of the release. Keep watching these three – things are happening.

Thank you so much for doing this interview, where did it all start as a band? No problemo. Well, it all started when we decided to jambalam together in a studio in little old Knysna. It all kinda worked surprisingly well, so we stuck with it!

have a good time. That being said, occasionally there are important music-industry-related people in the crowd, which makes us a bit nervous. Then we ignore them and have fun, which gives the best impression anyway. Do you have any rituals before you go on stage?

Do you all come from a musical background? Not particularly. The whole bands families love music though, so that probably counts. Other than that it was just a mixture of luck, passion, patience and mildly controlled insanity that got us to where we are, and will get us to where we want to be. Do you still get nervous when you on stage? Well, usually we just have fun on stage. You don’t generally get nervous when you’re about to

“the buzz—it’s happy, it’s vibey and people love it”

Way back when we passed around tea and spelled out our name. Then we grew up, realised that was stupid, and started doing the same thing with vodka. Then we grew up some more, realised that was also stupid, and just drank the vodka without bothering with the name spelling.

Tell me something about each member of the band? Well, I (David) have a particular liking for chicken burgers with no garnish. Lindi also does, but she likes the forests and stuff they usually put on. Perhaps it’s a musician thing, although we don’t get much occasion to find out, since musicians don’t generally meet up at Nandos. Who is the song writer in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? The songwriting has many inspirations. I usually don’t tell people what songs are about though, since I want people to draw their own meaning from lyrics. We don’t have one specific song writer, we all write and help out each other. If I have never been to one of your gigs, what could I expect? Awesomeness. And depending what venue you go to, the music could be nice and chilled, or vaguely deafening. Most of the time we jam out some alternative/pop rock songs and try to get the crowd hyper-active and high on music. Where are some of the places you have gigged? We’ve jammed a stage with Die Heuwels, Fantasties and Jack Parrow at KKNK. Couple of cool places in Johannesburg including Tanz Café and, well, many, many places. Like, lots. And lots. You have got an album out, what can you tell us about the album and what has the response been like from people? We do indeed. It’s called The Buzz, it’s a mixture of everything we do, it’s happy, it’s vibey, and people have been giving great feedback. Give it a listen everyone, you may dig it too! What is each members fave song off the album? It’s impossible to decide. It’s difficult to have a favourite song out of a bunch of songs you wrote! How can people get hold of the album? You can get it off iTunes, in Look & Listen, and at any gig we play. Also you can get it delivered to your door from www.dividablegrand.com, where you can also listen to the songs to see if you like them or not. Dooooo iiiiiiit.

Presents Kicking of summer in style is the festival we have all been waiting for. Synergy Live 2012 is back with a killer line up that will once again make it an unforgettable one with The Prodigy headlining this much anticipated festival. Riversands Farm, in Fourways Johannesburg on Saturday, 1 December is the place to be! With 25 million records sold, a string of number 1 hits and a musical career spanning over 20 years you can be assured that when The Prodigy bring it, they bring it harder and faster than any other act on earth! Constantly evolving, distorting, and contorting the way we understand music, The Prodigy bring with them an almost godly presence. After recently headlining the 2012 Download Festival in the UK another rip roaring success was enjoyed by the band when they we're dubbed “The Greatest Dance Act of all Time” by an overwhelming public vote in MixMag magazine. In the early 1990’s The Prodigy stormed the world's festivals, headlining stages usually reserved for the rock establishment and walked like Gods where other press-friendly artists feared to tread and dance artists were previously uninvited. Hits like ‘Firestarter’, ‘Breathe’ and ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ dominated the airwaves and firmly cemented that The Prodigy was a force to be reckoned with. The Prodigy returned to their “old school but cutting edge roots’ on their 2009 album Invaders Must Die, the album charted at number one in the UK and Australia blowing away all their previous albums. Hits like Omen, Warriors Dance and Take Me to the Hospital enjoyed rotation on 5FM spawning a whole new generation of The Prodigy fans. With the much awaited sixth album ‘How To Steal A Jet Fighter’ anticipated for release in 2013, The Prodigy has delivered time and time again, with SA fans eagerly awaiting the band’s captivating return performance on home soil.

Soldier is a melodic rock band. The core elements of the music are essentially the traditional rock instruments which are drums, bass, guitars, pianos and vocals. The band started out in 2009 as a 2-piece acoustic outfit and after gigging for about a year, the idea and sound evolved into a band called Move music, and now under the name of Soldier. Soldier is currently working on a studio album to be completed in 2013

Interviewed by : Duwyne Clayton

Thank you so much for doing this interview, Where did it all start as a band? Well the band started out about three years ago as an acoustic duo comprising of Adam Cana (Damian Jagjivan) on guitar and vocals and Jeff Tech (Jeremy Geyer) on guitar. They were called Movemusic initially and were a 2-piece for a long time mainly because they struggled to find people with the right combination of attitude and commitment. Just over a year ago Movemusic changed to the name of Soldier as a four piece, but a more recent line up is as a three piece with me on lead guitar. Do you all come from a musical background? No, none of us really come from a musical background. Jeremy's grandparents were musicians. Damian was classically trained on the piano. All of us just love music and that's why we were driven to pick up musical instruments and make music. Who is the song writer in the band and where do you get your inspiration from?

Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? Well we've made it a rule to not drink any alcohol before we go on stage. What is your fave Soldier Song?

Damian composes our songs. Love is a fickle muse so in all honesty heartbreak, the torment it causes and also the process of getting over that pain, is probably the best muse. The best kind of songs, ones that everyone can relate to and that are timeless are the sad ones. Other than that the songs are about all the challenges that life presents, and about holding onto the best of those times. You gotta have the resolve of a Soldier to carry on and overcome those challenges and that’s also where the band's name comes from. Who is some of your musical influences? We all have varying tastes in music but they all coalesce at a certain place and that's what makes our sound. Bands like U2, Muse, Placebo, Radiohead and artists like John Mayer and Morrisey have had an influence on us as musicians. If I have never been to one of your gigs, what could I expect? Someone once said that we're "a really well rehearsed band", and on another occasion somebody said that we're "a band with a big sound". The music is really accessible, very palatable but emotive and powerful at the same time. Some strong "pop" melodies Do you still get nervous when you on stage? Yes we do. It’s part of performing live. We enjoy being on stage and people can tell that a lot of emotion lies behind every word sung or every note played.

With little hesitation it has to be "Endless mile". Do you have an album out, if so where can we get it from? Not yet. We are currently working on our debut album titled "On the way up" which we hope to have released by early next year. We're hoping to release "She", our first single, soon though. How can people get hold of you? Social Medias? People can contact us through our facebook page (SOLDIER) or Sherwyn Lynch who is our Manager on 083 680 8741

Quote of the Month …..

“Wanting to be someone else is a waste of

the person you are.”

Kurt Cobain

We were in for a treat as Son of 1000 was having their last show in South Africa for a while. No, they are not leaving forever but instead going overseas to test the waters. They plan on going for about 3 months to see how it plans out then they will take it from there to see the way forward. So it is safe to say that they won’t be playing in South Africa for a few months as a full band, so it was only fit that they threw one more party for their fans, and wow what a party it turned out to be. We were entertained with an acoustic set by the awesome Michael Naranjo lead singer of “One day remains” an awesome live performer and opening act for Son of 1000. He has such a strong voice and his acoustic playing ability was amazing to see. You can read more about Michael in an interview in this very issue. I was scheduled to interview Son of 1000 before the gig, so as I got there at about 7:30pm I was welcomed by Fede, lead guitarist of the band. We went into an upstairs room where the rest of the band was waiting as we started our interview. I can then already see that the band was in a good playful mood, cracking jokes etc. Read it all in my interview with them on the next page. The band took to the stage and opened up with a nice cover “White Wedding” originally done by Billy Idol. The band nailed it but in my opinion probably sounded better than the original. As usual, Son of 1000 rocked the night, playing all their old and some new tracks. Actually in total they played over 25 songs really bringing meaning to the phrase, “playing till your fingers bleed” It was good to see a good crowd supporting the band. With every one singing along its always good to see people knowing the words to the songs such as “tricky” and Heist” The band delivered and really gave it their all, each member playing their heart out. I was so glad to have had the opportunity to attend this gig and would like to wish the band all the best for their overseas adventure and for keeping the South African flag flying high! One of my fave bands at the moment played one of their last shows in South Africa for a while. The boys of Son of 1000 will be jetting off to the USA on a 3 month tour and hopefully break down the walls of the music world around us. We catch up with the band and talk about what the future holds for the band. We at Fanbase would like to wish the band well on their tour as they wave the South African flag high. Enjoy this interview. It might be the last one you read for a while.

Thanks for doing this interview, it’s sad you’re leaving our shores but hopefully you will find greener pastures overseaswhere exactly are you moving to? Fede: To the dessert haha, No we not relocating, we just going on a long tour to America, we have never thought of leaving South Africa completely, our heart is here in S.A so we won’t ever leave for good, this is where we are loved and this is where we have our heart. So we will just be going on a tour and testing the waters as to speak. Do you already have a fanbase over there, or are you going there blindly and making a name for yourself from the start? Johan: We have got the odd mates and people who know of us but we haven’t got a huge fanbase over there, so we are just going to go over there and make ourselves known and try wing it. Do you have a time frame of how long you’ll be overseas or are you just going to play it by ear? Fede: We are aiming for 3 months and the plan is if it goes all well, we will stay longer but if it doesn’t then we will come back home, but the thing is we need to try at least, we not getting any younger and if we don’t try it now one day we going to grow old and say what if? So I think this is the moment and the chemistry is there in the band and we going and give this one more shot and if it doesn’t work out or happen, then that is it, I am going to go to the mountains and grow marijuana haha (jokes). No we just are making a last attempt to make something bigger of this band. David: That is pretty much what it is, it’s the last effort in seeing if the world can see the potential of what we can see in the band and see if we can actually make something of going overseas, not only for the band but also for people to just share our music over there Shaun: For me it is just about travelling man, I just want to go and see the world through our music. Fede: The best thing for me also is the travelling; it’s going to be a great experience for us to see the world. So ya besides the touring and besides trying to make it overseas, just being able to travel doing what we do is going to be priceless. Will you be trying to find a record label over there or is there one in the pipeline? Fede: No at the moment if we going to get a deal, it is going to be a distribution deal, we don’t really need a big major label behind us, we did the album ourselves, we are selling it ourselves, at least there is a bank account that is getting money and not money going to the labels... David: At this stage of the game it makes more sense to do it ourselves as we are making more money now from it. If we were talking like 5 or 6 million fans behind us maybe then, but at the moment it just makes more sense to do it this way.

Will your families be moving overseas with you or is this a story of the band working hard overseas while the wife’s hold the fort? Johan: no they will stay behind hey. Fede: and what happens on tour stays on tour haha, No our families will stay behind as we do the tour. You’re about to play your last show in South Africa for a while, are you sad about this and will you be going overseas with good memories of South Africa? Fede: We owe what we are to South Africa, just playing here tonight, we owe the owners of Tanz so much for giving us a platform and we have such good fans that we owe so much so of course we will have very good memories of this place. Johan: It’s not a good bye, it’s just a “see you later” so it’s not really sad because we will be back soon but it will be in our minds how much South Africa means to us. What do you think of the state of South African music and its talent? Fede: there is a lot of talent here and undiscovered talent Shaun: I don’t want to get political here but the fuse of showcasing music is sort of leaning to one direction and that it is to authentic and everyone is trying to be someone else Fede: What happens is people are getting used to being spoon fed with music. They are losing their ability of “go and search” for what they actually enjoy in their soul, they just turn on the radio and because a song is a big hit for a few months then they like that music. The song gets played 4 times a day and at the end of the week you have been brainwashed to like that specific music and song. I am sort of seeing a change in this with independent radio stations. They are showing us that there is other music out there. Johan van der Vyver has joined the lineup of Son of 1000 on bass, is he officially the new bassist for the band and will he also be going overseas I would hope so I am going overseas with the band haha, Yes I am the official bassist for Son of 1000 and it’s all about enjoying it and I really enjoy playing with this band, I have played in previous bands… Shuan: Just say those bands sucked haha Johan: Haha ja they sucked, but when you lose sight of why you making music then it’s time to stop, but I don’t feel that with this band. OK this question is for Fede and Shaun. You play gigs and Son of 1000 accoustic. Can you tell us more about that? It’s something that started long time ago We used to play son of 1000 songs but in acoustic form and the response was actually very good and people really enjoyed it.. And with playing a song acoustic it kind of cuts you deeply than an electric rock song. The voice on Shaun is ridiculously awesome and that with just one guitar playing turned out to be amazing, Songs that were up tempo we would chill it down and make it more intimate. And the nice thing about us playing the acoustic is it gives more variety of adding to the show. If we are one day in Los Angeles, and we want to play at a hotel but they say they only play acoustic bands then we can at least say that is

You have recently joined in with Micael Naranjo in the Guevara sessions. Can you just let us in on what’s the story behind that and how you agreed to take part in it. Michael Has an amazing mind and is an amazing musician and I think it was about a year ago before we did the sessions and he called me up and said he wants me to sing or play one of his songs. And at first I was like yes whatever, a year later he phoned me and said He has a song ready. We invited other bands to take part like Eleventh hour etc and we all played on this song for the Guevara sessions. And what he is doing with this movement of the Guevara sessions is something you don’t normally see in South Africa, He is putting together a whole bunch of musicians, known and unknown and exposing them to everybody. He is doing it in the most selfless manner and it is incredible and that is why I agreed to do it because it something so good and needed in South Africa Any last words to your fans before you go overseas? Thank you very much for all your support and we will be back to rock you all very, very soon. We won’t forget about you and we will definitely be posting things on Facebook and keeping in touch

Interview by: Duwyne Clayton How did you get into photography? I've always been "the one with the camera". I think my first camera was a Kodak that my Mom gave me before I went to Tech in 1996. I've always loved photos. I just love capturing memories (and party people and rock stars). What camera are you currently using? Canon 60D. What do you like about photography? I like Photography because it's a visual way to capture history and memories. A lot of times people will tell you a story, but according to me it didn't happen if there isn't photographic evidence. What style of photography do you like? I like the black and white photography (that Christelle Duvenhage and Liam Lynch does). I also like Sean Brand's style of artist photography. And then I have a thing for landscape photography as well. Nothing like seeing one of the most stunning landmarks / landscapes on earth being captured in a unique way.

Where do you see you’re self in five years, in terms of your photography? Hopefully as a professional photographer. But it's one of my passions so I'll keep doing it, even if I don't get paid. Who is your favorite photographer and why? This is a tough one to answer. I'd say when it comes to band photography everyone looks up to Sean Brand and Liam Lynch and their tied favorite. But there are some really good photographer out there that are not as well-known and also my favorites: Christelle Duvenhage, Jacques Coetzer, JP Nathrass, AJ Howard and others. Describe a day in the life of a photographer? I do photography as a hobby on the side. I do have a day job and I'm running 2 websites when I'm not working. I just make sure my camera is charged so I can capture images when I need to. What advice do you have for upcoming photographers? Keep on taking pictures and try to develop your own unique style. You'll know when you've found the right style when people start to compliment you on your photos. How can people get hold of you? You can check out my blog (Running Wolf's Rant) via http:// rwrant.co.za, follow me on Twitter via @hennokruger or check out Henno Kruger Photography on Facebook!
