Metallica, wow they rocked so much, if you weren’t there or if you just want to relive the moments check our gig review of this awesome event.

This isn’t the first time The Kickstands has featured in Fanbase Music Magazine but a lot has happened since the last interview so we caught up with Gary Nixon lead singer of the band to find out the latest of this awesome acoustic band which is growing every day. Enjoy the interview guys.

Hi Gary, it’s nice to be featuring you in the magazine again; can you tell us what the band has been up to since we last interviewed you?

Quite a lot has happened since our last interview, Rudi went to South Korea for a sabbatical and I dabbled in a solo project for a while before teaming up with a few friends around town and having fun with bar gigs and side projects. It's good to be back though!

Can you tell me about all the band members in The Kickstands now?

Chris Mcnabb on drums; formerly drummer for Asleep in Transit and all round nice guy.

Hezron Chetty on violin; brilliant, hard working Durban musician who has given an awful lot to the Durban community and South African music in general.

Bassist is Gareth Purchase from Red Light Stereo; He enjoys long walks on the beach with a lot of sunblock on and is one of the nicest guys I have ever met.

Rudi Greyvenstein; master of the shred! Incredibly talented musician and one of my oldest friends, Rudi and I have played a lot of gigs together in our short time on this globe.

We have only played two gigs as a full band so far and it's feeling groovy!

The Kickstands is currently a transforming entity!

For our readers who have never heard your music, explain your sound in 5 words?

Folk. Rock. Melodic. Full On When you write your own music; where do you draw inspiration from for the songwriting and what’s your favorite part about the process?

The song writing process is a very personal thing for me. Lyrics come from experiences, feelings and people in your life. I think every song writer tries to tell a story of their perceptions in life and what they think is the key so to speak.

Where would be one place you’d love to perform and why?

Red Rock... Epic Is there anyone you'd like to write a song with, or collaborate with?

Wow, there are so many!! First prize would have to be Ben Howard. As a singer song writer he takes the cake in my opinion.

Is there anything you feel strongly about, that you're trying to highlight through your music?

Love, Light, learn from your mistakes and don't be a d*ck!

What's the most fun part of being a musician?

Performing, getting in front of a crowd that loves your vibe and rocks out with you! Just jamming for your mates is also quite epic. Expression, the freedom it gives you to let go of things you might normally bottle up! All of those things sum it up quite nicely.

What got you into music, and why did you decide on the guitar as an instrument to play over another?

When I was a young buck my brother played bass for a garage band and I thought it was the coolest thing ever so I in turn picked up a nylon string and started plucking some basic punk riffs! haha Best thing I ever did. The guitar was just the most accessible instrument I had at that moment, I think I would have made a noise with anything if I had half the chance.

Who affects you today musically?

Ben Howard of course! The band would have a different opinion though!

You had the opportunity to play at Splashy, can you tell us how that was?

Splashy was awesome! That festival gets me every time!

Epic people, everyone in high spirits and one of the coolest vibes I’ve had the pleasure to be a part of!

We heard that you now have a Sponsor, what can you tell us about who is sponsoring you?

Wow there is a new band in town they are set to take the world by storm. When I first heard this band’s music I was instantly a fan and my faith in Rock music was officially restored. Think of grunge, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, mixed with a bit of Pearl jam but let me say this band isn’t just another copy of those bands.

They bring in their own unique style. You can expect big things from this band. Enjoy the interview

Hi guys, I am so happy to be featuring you as a band, first of all well-done on the release of “Out of rock”, we were lucky enough to review it in the last issue and I must say I love it, what can you tell us about that album?

Firstly, thank you for the feature and the kind words in the last issue. It’s good to know the SA music scene is not ‘out of rock’ yet. We’re very excited to have our first full-length album – something that’s been on our bucket list for a while now. Going into the studio in 2011, we originally wanted to lay down a 3-track EP, but luckily the sonic juices kept flowing and here we are with an 11-track disc.

The album is an ode to all things the four of us love about rock music – so listeners will be happy to find tracks that range from heavier rock guitar riffs to acoustic folky ballads and 70s/80s classic rock arrangements; a soundtrack to head-bang to on the way to the bar with a car full of friends or to help you admire those solar circles on your windscreen on the way back from a road trip up

the coast.

Who is the songwriter in the band and what inspires you to write your lyrics?

Francois dabbles with new riffs and arrangements until he thinks he’s onto something. He then calls up Trevor (bass) and Dylan (drums) to flesh it out into something workable. Then we hit the jam room and JC basically sings whatever comes out of his mouth which is normally bordering on a lawsuit from Audioslave. The lyrics evolve quite a lot. For the first 50 takes the lyrics change every time. As we go along some things stick and a theme develops. So our song writing process is extremely versatile with no restrictions at all. The song is literally carved out and defined with each attempt.

No one knows what we looking for till we have it.

It’s a method that’s really worked for us.

When I first heard you guys I was blown away by your sound, who are some of your musical influences and what genre of music would you classify yourself in?

Our love of rock music is quite broad, from when Chuck Berry hit the scene with his killer, swinging riffs to when Dave gave up the drums and started Foo’ing around.

It’s safe to say the BSR wolf pack of four is nestled under a colourful umbrella-genre of rock. Some of the tracks on the 11-track album will undoubtedly lean towards folk rock, hard rock and pop rock – but we find the whole ‘hyphen-upon-hyphen’ (e.g. post-folkprogressive-hard-rock-with-green-jelly) way of defining music quite limiting and confusing to be honest. We like to keep things simple; call a spade a spade and a rock a rock.

Can you tell us a bit about the background of the band, where did it all start as a band?

In 2008, Francois returned from abroad, sold his drums for an electric guitar and started the band with a few (now) ex-members jamming in a garage in Bellville. We placed an online ad for a vocalist and the heavens gave us JC. From 2009 to 2011 we actively gigged in-andaround Cape Town and drummers and bassists came and went. Then in 2011, we were privileged to rope Dylan in between the drums and in 2012 we lured in Trevor ‘honey-fingers’ behind the bass – both with some cleverly-worded online ads again. What followed was a much cleaner approach to the composition of the music with an emphasis on allowing enough space in the music for each instrument to breathe.

The story behind the name Blackstoneradio: In 1999, Francois (at the age of 14) bought his first guitar from a neighbour for R42 and a Black Stone cigar.

JC's ‘radio’friendly vocal melodies completed the name.

Tell us a bit about each member of the band?

JC: Sings from the hip and can literally swim to Robben Island and back.

Trevor: Stomps his weekends away at Psytrance-parties and has a background in Zoology.

Dylan: Still needs to carry around his ID when going partying and struggles with a Steri-Stumpie addiction.

Francois: Saves penguins for a day job and has got way too much Elvis memorabilia.

You have been play listed on Zone Radio, what is your take on internet radio stations like Zone Radio that looks out so much for South African musicians?

Well you’ve hit the nail on the head: internet radio stations are the rock ‘n roll Mother Theresa to a neglected, hungry musical community that’s been orphaned for too long from mainstream stations. Having said that, it’s great to hear that many mainstream stations are slowly changing their tune by taking cues from campus and internet radio stations and supporting more local and international rock acts. So we would say keep on truckin’, Zone Radio!

Are you play listed on any other radio stations?

The first single, ‘Out of Rock’, is currently rotating on AFM, Zone Radio and MFM and it’s also been featured on 5FM’s Rocking the Republic by Catherine Grenfell, Jon Savage’s pod cast, OFM and Radio Helderberg. We hope to push it quite a bit in the next few months along with our other up-coming singles.

If we have never been to one of your gigs, what can we expect?

Drums that drill, bass that booms, guitars that groove and vocals stick like bubblegum on your boots. And the odd whiskey for good measure.

Where can we expect to see you gigging?

4 May we’re at Carnival Court in Cape Town (alongside Finers In The Sky and 3rd World Spectator); and 7 May you can catch us at Aandklas in Stellenbosch (alongside 3rd World Spectator and Jack Stone).

What an amazing month it has been for the Durban shores.

We have met up with some amazing and talented young members of the music scene. I would like to thank each and every one for their participation in our Durban section. Our feature band for this month is a local all guys band Domain8.

We had the opportunity to meet and have a couple of good laughs with this dominating energetic crew at the Winston Pub. They seem to be multi-talented on many different levels check out the interview and you will see why. Ard Matthews and his open mic nights have brought great exposure to all local talent. Cool Runnings

The Accidentals came out of Matt Vend and Hezron Chetty’s vast experience playing in the seedy backwaters of the South African, European and even Asian live music scenes. They've seen both sides to this monster called sound, and have based the music on the idea of giving the sound space to breath and move. With Hezron’s technical ability on Violin and Matt’s vast repertoire of original material they bring the heat. They are joined on stage by two veterans of the music industry, Andrew ‘lappies’ Loubser of THC on drums and Badger Mcfur of Sibling Rivalry on bass.

‘Hezron on violin comes across as some kind of nouveau gypsy duke, bringing an amount of class that’s impossible to conjure from any other source than pure talent and a raw love of music’ – Ray Mysterio (Mahala) ‘Matt Vend’s music oozes full blown suicide Sunday vibes; but with an underlying, heartfelt optimism that stops you from pulling the trigger, urging you to go on and experience the sadness; because it is a beautiful sadness, and without it, happiness would be a distant, unimaginable dream in a world never conceived of’. – Ray Mysterio (Mahala) As we walk into Cool Runnings, I get this whack of two lovely speakers and sound equipment donated by Marshall Music store. I was gobsmacked with the beauty of it. Speakers sound amazing; we hear them while the drummer of The Accidentals (Andrew “lappies” Loubser) of THC warms up for the night to come. His facial expression said it all.

Next up was our organiser Ard Matthews, I have seen him in many concerts, but never behind the drums, and wow could he keep a beat? awesome As the boys walked in and onto the stage getting themselves in tune the crowd was casually informed that tonight we are recording live and as the night proceed they will play back play the recording to get feedback on the sound. Next thing, boom this punk rock folk reggae is streaming through the speakers with a violin playing in full motion to the beat, my toes were tapping.

Right here and now they were recording their song, and then we get into the action by yelling back Hi yellow “Hi julle”. After the first recording the crowd got to hear the playback and it sounded really good. Interactive experience is how it felt. The lead singer is Matt Vend and well

known for traveling the world and researching music with his unique voice. The violin player is Hezron Chetty and backing them on bass was Badger McFur of Sibling Rivals. On the drums was Andrew “Lappies” Loubser.

1234 was a personal favourite song of mine and when the recording was played back I found myself singing along to the song even though having only caught up with a few words. The Accidentals in music is a note who’s pitch is not a member of a scale or mode indicated.

I think Ard Matthews must be smiling from within as the band ripped it on stage and the crowd loved them…I can’t wait to see what they have for us in the future.

We will keep a close eye on the band definitely see them in the future and keep all Fanbase fans in the loop.

We hooked up with Domain 8 at the Winston Pub one night and had the opportunity to chat with this interesting local band.

This unusual Metal Band has been making music for around 2 years now and is in the process of recording of their album.

Still on the lookout for a new guitarist they have the stars to reach. Chantell and I had a few questions ready for these 4 young talented men.

Who are the band members of Domain 8 and tell me what part do you bring to the band?

Dylan - I’m on Base guitar.

Brandon - I do Vocals & lyrics Shane - I play the lead guitar and backup vocals Dave - (I play the fool) but mostly the Drums.

Where did the name Domain 8 come from?

Shane came up with the name, the guys where all fooling around spitting out band names, Dominate was one that stood out and evolved into Domain 8.

What would you say your Genre of music would fall under?

What we really want is to be a new sound that everyone can be comfortable with; we put in our own sound and feel to every song we make. We are an experimental metal, progressive sound, melodic yet it’s not anything you can find, in actual fact we don’t like classing our sound, we just feel it.

If you could feather for any SA band who would it be?

Brandon - Chromium Dylan - The dead will tell Shane - Pesto or Seether Dave - Kobus, Half Price.

What are the biggest obstacles for bands in today’s intricate life styles?

Finding the right musicians to play our type of music, we meet fantastic new musicians who can rock hard but can’t fit in.

They learn the riffs after a while and then decide it’s not for them, we end up having to find new members.

What advice would you give to fellow SA bands trying to make it in the big time?

Everyone has the own different taste in music, it’s up to them to try and figuring it out, they should love making music ,they have a passion for doing it. Just remember you don’t need to fit in, Stand out!!

What inspires you to write the kind of music you write?

Narcotics lol we have many different meanings coming from society to everyday feelings.

Tell us about one of the most resent gigs the band has had?

We did the Splashy Fen Battle at The Winston Pub, We felt it was our most remarkable performances up to date but with only getting the people favorite vote we will have to try next year.

Any dirty little secret you want to share?

Dylan had a stroke at their new year’s party last year. He lost some of his memory and had to relearns songs and lyrics, He never gave up and within weeks he was back with the band playing like before. - Well Done Ok Ok Ok last question, what is your age and what is your favorite quote of all time?

Dylan 22 - non yet Brandon 24 - "Metal" by Grand Lazenby Shane 20 - "life isn’t about finding yourself it’s about creating yourself" Dave 21 - "no. drink the bleach" by Metal lock & I love you mom!!

Thank you to Domain 8 for their time given to us, we had a couple of drinks and certainly enjoyed there company. We have been invited to next band practice at the Band House aka - Grandmas House, We will be sure to drop in and give a listen and keep everyone up to tracks with this hot young talent.

Awesome Surf Carnival in Durban this June June will be epic in Durban with the Durban Surf Carnival cranking up the heat along surf city’s legendary Golden Mile.

Presented by Jeep Apparel at New Pier between June 7 and 9, the Durban Surf Carnival has a feast of cool events for water sport lovers and competitors alike. Expect world class wave riding in the Longboarding, Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) and Retro Surfing divisions as well as during an unforgettable Traditional Longboard Expression Session that will showcase the golden days of surfing.

The Durban Surf Carnival includes the KZN Longboard Championships, the South African SUP Surfing Championships (Open men and Women’s divisions as well as the Juniors and legends division for over 45’s) and an all new Forgotten Soul Retro Surfing Division which will see surfers riding single-fin sub 7’0” surf boards.

Avid surf photographers can look forward to the SNAP Photographic Competition while beginners can expect to stand and surf before the weekend is over with the Mad Dog Surf School Free Learn to Surf clinic run by Shaun Sellman. Another new addition to this year’s event is the Club Zero fitness weekend. Club Zero will be running warm up and stretching sessions as well as some fun exercise programs on the beach.

GIGG REVIEW :

UTOPIA BOSS

So, myself and Jesse & the Process arrive at Nekkies Resort after a beautiful drive through the “Platteland berge”, excited to put on a show and share a beer with new people.

The campsite looked warm and inviting as we drove through watching various people each on their own mission. We met up with De Wallen and shared a few laughs at the comedy tent (catch these guys at Obviouzly Armchair on Sundays for Comedy Night) before moving to the “BOS Ice Tea” tent. The bright yellow banners were hard to miss and we took to the stage ready to create some acoustic vibes. We sat together on stage, alternating songs and also playing a few hits together. The audience was enthusiastic and responsive and couldn’t get enough of Jesse & the Process’ pop punk sound.

De Wallen, Cape Town’s rock stars, adapted easily to acoustic and put on quite a show. These guys had a ball on stage and their unique sound stopped many passersby in their tracks.

Jeandré’s (front man) dramatic vocals will have you hypnotised and his stage presence is so great that the show isn’t over until he says it is.

It was a great weekend overall and we can’t wait until the next one!

Veronica Look Look out ladies and gentleman there is a new lady in town. She goes by the name of Veronica Look and her voice is unique and sounds like a host of angels. I am so excited about featuring this artist in Fanbase Music magazine, but don’t take my word for it, check out this exclusive interview for yourself. Enjoy the interview peeps

Hi there thanx for doing this interview with Fanbase Music Mag. Can you tell us where it all started for you as a musician, did you come from a musical back ground?

I grew up in a house where music came first. I mean, listening to music J My Mom sported a David Bowie hairstyle, had a life size poster of Alice Cooper and my Dad used to indulge in the tunes of Rodriguez and sometimes the Beach Boys!

I think my entire family found solace in music. Nirvana was my saving grace as a teen!

I had never gone for any music lessons (I did go for a few years of vocal coaching) but I started at an early age as a poet.

Writing controversial poems about love, sex and pain, my poetry often raised tension with my teachers at school, yet there were some teachers who encouraged me to keep on writing. After school I decided to put a melody to one of my poems, which today is known as: Broken Flower – one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever written.

During my first years of composing, I met a cool guy named Vince (aka Francois Pieterse), who influenced my music as much as my life! He has more patience than a woman in labor! He taught me a lot about playing guitar, remaining positive and pushing forward with my music! We were in various bands together – one of them being Rezonance of which my brother, Kenneth (bassist of the Cape Town band: Very Ape) was my roadie while I played bass and was lead vocalist .

Your name is Alani but you go as the name Veronica Look. Can you explain what and who is Veronica Look, how did that name come about?

After wrestling, one night, with how to be as a musician (how to act) I woke up the next morning and the first thing that came out of my mouth was “Veronica Look” (same way “Forward thinking Batman” also popped out of my mouth, when I realized I had a writing block because I was hungry… hahaha). The name, Veronica Look, stuck in my head and kept appearing everywhere! So I decided: Veronica Look would be my musical persona, so I didn’t have to force myself to be something else almost like a mask.

Do you still get nervous when you go on stage and how do you overcome it?

I don’t overcome the nervousness. I guess I just go with it. Sometimes it does help to look into the crowd, at the faces and make eye contact.

Some people prefer to stare straight ahead, over the heads – but I don’t think I could do that, feels too fake!

If I’m nervous as sh*te, then so be it.

It goes away after a few songs!

Name some of the places that you have played at?

“My entire family found solace in music”

My favorite place I’ve ever played was at Alter Ega in London. Such a cute, but quirky little pub. Other than that, I’ve played at loads of Cocktail bars in London, Purple Turtle in Cape Town, Rumours in JHB and restaurants around SA. When I was still in a band, we played Roxy’s and some venue in Pretoria, can’t remember the name (sorry PTA!).

In 2010 I also played live on Echo FM in London, was pretty cool. My fav place was Alter Ega in Belham.

Who are some of your influences?

My Brightest Diamond, Tori Amos, Bat for Lashes You have a great voice, what other instruments can you play?

Thanks man J I play a bit of guitar. I’m learning harmonica too! Would be so rad to write a song with harmonica in!

What genre of music do you classify your music as?

Although I’m still experimenting with where I want to be, I would say that my music is Acoustic Ballad heading towards theatrical.

Where do you draw your inspiration from for your song writing?

I write about my personal experiences or the things I see around me, happening to woman (mostly) or my family. I struggle to write happyclappy songs so moody songs come to me easily!

If we have never seen you live, what can we expect at a Veronica Look gig?

I’m quite a loner, so I don’t blabber much, so expect a moody atmosphere! Focus on lyrics more than anything else. The secret is in the lyrics!

To play at Vodacom IN THE CITY Following the exciting announcement that UK indie sensations, alt-J, will be performing at this year’sVodacom In The City on 4 October, the word on Twitter, online radio and other social media platforms is: ‘will the next international act be a band or a DJ?’ In response, Vodacom In The City is proud to announce that award-winning DJ, Boys Noize, has been added to the growing international line up at this year’s event.

Making music for over half his lifetime, Alex Ridha, well-known to the world of electronic music as Boys Noize , has graced some of the world’s biggest stages performing alongside huge industry names. Boys Noize has also cemented his place in Rolling Stone’s Top 10 ‘DJ’s Who Rule the Earth’ as well as a winning Beatport’s ‘Best Electronic Act’ three consecutive years.

I remember many years ago when the family and me were at a Caravan Park called Scottsburgh Caravan Park. Most of the times there was a lot of fun, playing on the beach, roaming the park and just relaxing having a break from my then school life (hehe) I remember bits and drabs of it because you got to remember this was a very long time ago so I just have little pieces of memories which seem to be stick in my brain. You might be wondering why I am telling you this story.

Well it was at this very camping trip that I discovered Metallica for the first time. I remember a sweet fond memory of me listening to my older brother’s ear phones and Metallica was blaring from these earphones. I remember a song that really stuck out for me “Searching, seek and destroy”. Right there and then I was a fan and have been ever since. I have come a long way since those young teenage years and have listened and educated myself with all of Metallica’s music. With my fave albums being” Kill em All”, “Ride the lightning” and “Black”. I even like the Load and Reload albums, if I had to pick a band to make it in my top ten lists, Metallica would defo be the one of the top 5 on that list. I just love them that much. So you can imagine my excitement when I first heard they are coming back to South Africa and I am going to be able to see them play live. Excited is an understatement.

So on Saturday 27th April my gorgeous girlfriend and I made our way to the FNB stadium to see one of my fave bands of all time play live. Before I go on, I should mention one thing about this particular date. The 27th April marks a very special day in the South African calendar. It is a day we as South Africans call “Freedom Day”. For those of you who don’t know what that means, Freedom Day is a South African public holiday celebrated on 27 April. It celebrates freedom and commemorates the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994. They were the first national elections in South Africa in which the franchise did not depend upon race. Now without me supporting any National political party in this write up, I still want to acknowledge the significance of this day and a band like Metallica playing in South Africa on this particular day. Back in the days of apartheid, South Africa was so looked down upon and frowned upon for the apartheid. It was actually unheard of for an international band to be coming to South Africa to do a tour. I know Queen did a gig at Sun City in those years and you can ask any member of the band about that tour and they will tell you they wish they never did it because it was looked upon like they were supporting apartheid,

which we all know now they weren’t. But that just gives an indication of why international bands such as Metallica etc could not tour South Africa.

But fast forward almost twenty years later since apartheid ended in 1994, and we have now had the opportunity to see some awesome international bands play in our beautiful country. Shows you how lucky we are to have a band like Metallica play in our country. Even lead singer James Hetfield himself wished everyone Happy Freedom Day set which I thought was an awesome way to connect with the crowd. But a bit about the band Metallica’s performace later. Back to the beginning of the start.

We made our way to the gates and was let into the stadium with no problems or flares. We proceeded to find our self some food and found a stand just before the entrance where we had to go. Sitting down first to eat a yummy Boerewors roll we then proceeded to our seat to witness one of the best bands I have ever seen live.

We were lucky enough to be blessed with opening acts for this leg of the tour. South African metal groups Chronium and Pestroy were set to take the stage. They both kicked ass and got the crowd going before the main event. I would like to congratulate both bands on their performance. It’s a great honor to open up for Metallica and they did our country proud.

After both bands finished their set we waited in anticipation for Metallica to hit the stage. If I have one complaint for this gig, it seemed like forever before Metallica took to the stage. But I guess there is a lot of behind the scenes preparations to be done, things we as fans don’t know about, to make sure that the gig runs smoothly, and smoothly run it did.

You can see these guys know what they’re doing. Their sound and stage performance is awesome. They know how to use the stage well with even band members walking up another level which takes them behind drummer Lars Ulrich and rocking out over there on the stage.

Metallica did the perfect set list. Playing all their top tunes including my fave, Hit the lights, Enter Sandman and Search and Destroy. And who could forget the intimacy of Nothing Else Matters with the crowd getting their lighters and cell phones out and swinging them in the air as it is one of Metallica’s slower Ballads.

While watching them perform I got the feeling that I was a part of something big . Hetfield has a good way with engaging with the crowd calling us all part of the Metallica family.

One thing about Metallica is their songs are loooong, but not in a boring hurry and get on with the next song kind of way.

But instead in a way of damn these guys know how to rock out with great riffs, guitar solos, drum solos and lyrics. Even at their age!!! It makes you just want to whip out your air guitar and start jamming right then and there, actually looking behind me I did actually see a real huge fan playing his air guitar to the song Searching, seek and Destroy. (grin) Okay I know I said I only had one complaint earlier about waiting till they came on stage but I do however have one more complaint. People who can’t hold their own drink really get to me. It just spoils it for those who are sober or can hold their drink. There is nothing funny about throwing your empty beer cups into the air so it hits someone else on the head on the way down. That sort of thing happened a lot through the night and left me looking over my shoulder every few minutes making sure there isn’t a flying cup coming for my or girlfriends head. That is sooo not cool so if you were one of those people who threw cups around. Just don’t do it, it isn’t cool and you really do make an a*se of yourself by acting so selfishly. No one thinks you’re clever and you do look quite stupid. OK there runt over, other than that, the concert was awesome.

I have very fond memories of seeing Metallica play live, the music, the sound, the atmosphere. Metallica was just amazing!!!!!!

On Monday 22nd April I was invited to see Gerald Clark performing live. I have never saw him live, so I made my way to the Asbos Teater in Pretoria East .

Not knowing what to expect since it’s my first time seeing Gerald Clark performing and not even knowing that a place called Asbos Teater existed. I found the place very easily and the moment I went through the gate I could feel a completely different vibe amongst the people. They were ready for a SHOW!!

One of the people said before I went in "Get ready for an Experience!" And then it hit me! It was going to be one that I’ll remember for a long long time. When I got to the door I got in almost immediately, no struggling to get in and that's already a big plus point for me!! It really is one of the most awesome venues I’ve been to, and really well organized. Not too small or too big. It was just right.

I got my drink and got seated right in front, ready for the experience! Not knowing what to expect I waited patiently for Gerald to hit the stage. Finally he took to the stage and the whole vibe inside the Sold out theatre just got more intimate.

Everybody was waiting anxiously for him to pick up that 12 string guitar and to start singing. He started the show and as soon as he got halfway into his first song I was wondering where I've been. Have I been dead lately that I never got a Cd or that its only my First time seeing him live??? He had me and the rest of the crowd at he's feet. I must say he is a damn good guitar player (jip even though, the first string broke in the third song more or less!) He is an amazing singer. He knows how to connect with the crowd! Something very few artists can do these days. A song that really stood out for me was “Marry Me”. The way he sang it was unbelievable.

The crowd loved it as well and some of the crowd knew every word!!

After this Show I know it won't be the last time that Asbos Teater OR Gerald Clark is going to see me at one of their shows.

I really had an amazing time with amazing people! Thank you to everybody that made the evening so special! All the organizers, Gerald and just everybody that came out and made the evening like it was.A very special thank you to Ice Carstens for putting me on the guest list and always helping out Fanbase Music magazine in every way possible.

And please people, if you are out of date like me and don’t know Who Gerald Clark is, look him up, buy his Cds and listen to what you've been missing out on! You won't regret it!

So it was the 28th of April and that time of the month to go and see all your favourite acts live at Park Acoustics. I couldn’t wait for this month’s event as it had one of the biggest line-ups so far this year.From Suburban Saints all the way from the UK to Van Coke Kartel.

I made my way to Voortrekker Monument Pretoria early enough to get a seat right in front of the stage. After getting an awesome boerewors roll from Braaiboy I got ready for the first act, Sons Of Settlers. The crowd poured in and the ford was fully packed within minutes. Next up was Suburban Saints from Scotland. Now they just know how to get the crowd going. They were awesome and I’m sure they have won a lot of South African fans. City Bowl Mizers and Holliday Murray followed and after seeing both live for the first I wasn’t even surprised why they are so well known all around S.A. The crowd kept screaming we want more and didn’t want them to leave.

Just showing how good the bands were and how much every person enjoyed the acts.

It was time for the main act and who better than Van Coke Kartel. It was their first show in Pretoria in 2013 so one could just imagine how hungry the crowd was to see them again. The crowd went crazy with the first song already and started forming the good old mosh pit. Hits like Tot Die Son UitKom and Buitenkant followed with a crazy crowd and even crazier moshpit. The last song Verdoof, Vergiftig,Verskoon My was really the perfect song to end of a perfect sold out Park Acoustics!

A BIG shout out to everyone that makes Park Acoustics what it is today! It’s definitely an event I’ll make sure to never miss again!

The SAMA nominee announcement in March was what was on everyone’s lips. Fanbase Music magazine was invited to all the fun and what a blast it was. The day started off with myself and Matt (Fanbase Photographer) making our way to the Nominee announcement which was held at the Turbine Hall in Newtown. We were greeted by familiar faces as Dianne and Sanesh from Total Exposure met us at the door, you can see they were busy as they were running around trying to get everything perfectly done.

We made our way to our seats and waited for the event to start. As more people arrived you were able to see some familiar celebs taking their seats all hoping that they were one of the lucky ones to be nominated. Some well-known faces in the crowd was Elvis Blue, Lira, ChianoSky, Zonke, and even Randall Abrahams from Idols judges fame.

As the event started and the people got seated, the nominee announcements were made. It was nice to witness all the excitement as each band/musicians name was called out. Well-done to all the Nominees and we wish you all the best of luck.

After all the excitement of the Nominee announcement, the day was not yet over, as Matt and myself made our way back home for lunch, a short nap and change of clothes we made our way to the next location. It was time for the SAMAS nominee celebrations.

Quite excited about this one we pull up to the venue in question which was held in Sandton at an awesome venue called The Sands. Very posh, I may add.

We make our way to the entrance to register and are greeted by Sanesh and Diann (Total Exposure) who notify us that at about 8pm the local celebs are due to arrive so we were to make our way to the Yellow carpet for a chance to get some pics of the stars. A yellow carpet, I hear you say? Isn’t it supposed to be the red carpet? Well the event was sponsored by MTN hence why the color yellow.

We got ourselves a drink and then made our way to the Yellow carpet to await the stars. The carpet soon filled up with photographers and television reporters all waiting to catch a glimpse or interview of the celebs. And Celebs there were.. It was so exciting seeing the stars walking past posing for pictures. Amongst the many stars were celebs like The Muffinz, ChianoSky, Lira, Zonke and even Freddie Van ‘Dango made an appearance who did some “uummm” sexy poses for the photographers hehe There were so many Celebs that it’s difficult to remember them all for this review but just know that the SAMAS nominee announcement is defo for the rich and famous and it was an awesome experience for Fanbase Music Magazine to get invited to such an event.

Once again well done to all the nominees and good luck with the actual event on 1th May to be held at Suncity. There are some big names up for an award and I can’t wait to see who the lucky winners of the awards will be.

Universal Music Scoops 32 SAMA-nominations This Year!

Universal Music South Africa has achieved a staggering 32 nominations for the 19th annual MTN South African Music Awards. The nominees for the coveted awards were announced on Wednesday, 20 March at the Turbine Hall in Newtown, and Universal Music South Africa’s artists were a shining light on the day.

Artist from the Universal Musicstable were nominated in categories across the board. What stands out is that these nominations are not limited to a certain type of category – some of the artists are nominated in varying categories, with several artists garnering multiple nominations.

Kelly Khumalo received three nominations – Album of the Year, Female Artist of the Year and Best African Adult Album. The equally brilliant Maleh matched Khumalo’s nominations, having also received nods for Album of the Year, Female Artist of the Year and Best African Adult Album. Ntokozo Mbambo joins Khumalo and Maleh with three nominations of her own – Album of the Year, Best Contemporary Faith Music and Female Artist of the Year. The ladies will be vying for top honours at the prestigious awards ceremony at Sun City later this year.

And the ladies aren’t the only ones who managed to stack up multiple nominations – both Elvis Blue and Khaya Mthethwa received three nominations each. Blue received nominations for Male Artist of the Year, Best Adult Contemporary Album and Record of the Year; while Mthethwa garnered nominations for Best Newcomer of the Year, Best R&B/Soul / Reggae and Record of the Year.

DJ Vetkuk vs Mashota snagged an impressive four nominations, making them the most nominated act of the 19th annual SAMA-awards. They were nominated for Best Duo or Group, Best Dance Album, Remix of the Year and Record of the Year.

Oskido and Proverb continue the list of multiple nominations – both artists received double nominations this year. Oskido for Best Dance Album and Record of the Year and Proverb for Male Artist of the Year and Best Rap Album. Kabomo joins Oskido and Proverb with his two nominations for Best R&B/Soul / Reggae and Record of the Year.

The list of nominees continues with BOP (Record of the Year); Nomfusi (Best African Adult Album); Professor (Best Kwaito Album); Teddybears (Best Kwaito Album); DJ Zinhle (Record of the Year); Donald (Record of the Year) and Black Motion (Record of the Year).

LAUNCHES FIRST ACOUSTIC ALBUM WOODEN THOUGHTS Dan Patlansky has been described as a “conglomerate of charisma, charm and musical genius” and he’s back with his first acoustic album Wooden Thoughts, to be released in Johannesburg (21 April) and Durban (22 April).

Wooden Thoughts follows 20 Stones, released to critical acclaim last year, and is rooted in the blues with influences of country, bluegrass, world music and traditional Indian melodies.

It’s an album that Patlansky has aspired to do for a long time: “I’ve always wanted to do an acoustic album but finally decided to do it following my successful unplugged tour last year. I realised there was a demand for it. As a musician, it allows you to play something different and it is less flashy. It also lends itself to a wide range of genres that allowed me to stretch myself,” he explains.

On Wooden Thoughts Patlansky sings and plays acoustic guitar, slide guitar , Dobro and the mandolin. He is joined by Clint Falconer on bass and Andy Maritz on Cajon. Wendy Oldfield does backing vocals on the track Miss Oowee as well as on The Weight.

Patlansky, who produced the album himself, is delighted that it was recorded in the Knysna forest by Howard Butcher – a specialist recorder who has produced among others Guy Buttery, Steve Newman and Nibs van der Spuy.

20 Stones was voted one of the Top 20 blues albums in the world; Daddy’s Old Gun was nominated as one of the top singles for 2012 by Rolling Stone SA, and Patlanksy is hoping that this new album will also make waves and do as well. Dan will be undertaking an extensive tour throughout South Africa as well as performing in Europe this year including a performance at the Denmark Blues Festival.

After his debut, Standing at the Station, an independent album that amazed critics and garnered Dan a reputation as a Blues-phenomenon and his subsequent “Readers Choice” vote as “Best Blues Guitarist in Southern Africa” – Dan released a second album, True Blues which was produced and released by EMI on the famed Blue Note label in 2004. Dan is one of the only South Africans to ever achieve “Blue Note” status.

In 2006 Fender Guitars recognised Dan’s fiery playing and offered him an endorsement deal to promote Fender Guitars and amps. Dan is one of only six Fender endorsed guitarists in South Africa.

In February 2005 and again in July 2006, Selwyn Miller, New Orleans based manager of David Gates and Bread, Randy Crawford, and Petula Clark amongst others, brought Dan to New Orleans to showcase this amazing talent.

In his time living in the city of the Blues, Patlansky performed at legendary venues such as Maple Leaf, Rock & Bowl and Checkpoint Charlie with many Blues giants such as Henry Gray (Howlin’ Wolf’s Pianist), Snooks Eaglin, The Batiste Family and Rockin Dopsie Jr. While abroad, Dan performed live on both television and radio.

Dan followed his first two albums with three more releases Real (2007), Move My Soul (2009) and 20 Stones (2012). His latest album Wooden Thoughts will be released in 2013.

He continues to perform all over South Africa and internationally in the company of world-renowned musicians.

Seed Experiences cements its position as one of SA’s top festival organizers with the hugely successful “We Are One Colour Festival “

“We Are One, We Are One” echoed through the grassy embankment of Emmarentia Dam yesterday as 15,000 revellers were treated to Jo’burg’s first ever Colour Festival. On the hour, every hour excited festival fans threw their coloured powder into the air in

unison, creating a kaleidoscope of green, orange, pink, yellow and blue.

People-watching was almost as fun as dancing, as not only did everyone wear white clothing as the organisers had suggested, but they further added to the fun by enhancing their get-up with creative props such as parasols, ornate sunglasses, flower garlands and handpainted ‘free hugs’ signs. The site was a sea of cameras and smartphones as strangers posed forstrangers, appreciating the effort put into the costumes with a passing‘high-five’.

Skydivers, Bollywood Dancers and South Africa’s top DJ’s rocked the masses, making everyone present feel lucky enough to have a ticket to the sold-out event. Electronic funk filled the air as crowds got down to the beats of Toby2Shoes, Kid Fonque and DJ Mighty. Dance duo GoodLuck really got the crowds jumping with their contagious energy and exhilaratingbeats.

With close on 27,000 Facebook fans on the Jo’burg page alone, the official festival hashtag #WEAREONESA was trending on Twitter as everyone tweeted their messages and photos for the world to see. ‘The most fun I’ve had in my life’, ‘best organised event’, ‘utterly and totally epic’, ‘amazing and beautiful experience’ are just some of the comments flooding today’s social media pages, with fans and the artists that performed at the event having loved the experience. Important for the festival was to keep it green and waste from

the festival has been cleared, collected and will be recycled.

We are one Color Festival

The excitement in the air was almost unbearable as we made our way to Emmerentia Dam to witness one of the best events I have ever attended. Ladies and Gentleman this is the gig review of Joburg “We Are One Color Festival”, and if you were not there, then you really missed out, but lucky I am here to tell you all about it, granted in a bragging kind of a way.

We heard good reports from our Cape Town Journalist Simone S Factor about the event when it was held in the mother city a few weeks before but I must say I under estimated just how much fun it was. From the moment we got to the event, we were treated like royalty by the staff showing us where the media has to go through. After we ticked our names of the list at the main gate we were shown and escorted to the media tent and there we were greeted by Mike Pocock who was one of the main organisers of the event. It was nice to finally meet him in person because as up to now I have just been in contact with him on email and through Facebook.

We made our way through to the where the main stage was and settled down in some shade under a tree near the stage. After buying our color powder and got a bite to eat we were ready for the day’s event. Every hour on the hour they would gather the strong 15 000 crowd to the front and count down to when they will be throwing the color powder into the air. 10, 9, 8 all the way to 1 then all of a sudden with lots of screams and cheers, the whole venue was covered in colored smoke. Now this would happen every hour but you can imagine a lot of people were throwing powders in between the set hours so everywhere you looked was either a smoke of color or people covered in color. It really is a great experience and something I defo recommend you do when it comes around next year again.

What I liked about this event is the unity it brought amongst the people of Joburg, I mean where else can you actually behave like a 5 year old throwing color powder in the air and at each other, get covered in color and get away with it? Only at “We Are One Color Festival”.

I can’t end off this review without mentioning the music. The sound first of all was awesome, the band/DJS they played were also awesome. The line included Sadhu Sensi, DJ Babaganoush, Michael Lesar, DJ Danger Ingozi, DJ MIGHTY, Toby 2 Shoes, Richard The Third, GOODLUCK and Kid Fonque.

So you can imagine the party was really happening with such great music and lots of Color all round, what more do you need to make a PARTY happen - and a huge party it was!

I urge everyone who didn’t get to go this year, to get your ar**s to next year’s event – you don’t want to miss out!

Well done to all the organizers and everyone involved in making this WE are ONE a great success.

Blitz Patrollie to fly SA flag at Cannes Film Festival SA police film gives local cinema a shot in the arm Click to tweet about this right now The hilarious new South African police action film, Blitz Patrollie, is to be showcased at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival on 17 May 2013.

The film’s stars, local comedy icons Kagiso Lediga and David Kau, will attend the festival with producers Isaac Mogajane and John Volmik, debuting Blitz Patrollie on a global scale. The team leaves for Cannes on 15 May and returns on 21 May. One of international film’s chief events, the festival is attended by the world’s A -list movie stars and is the event of choice for the industry’s finest to premiere new films that push boundaries and advance the medium.

Blitz Patrollie chronicles the adventures of two police officers who have had the misfortune of being stationed at the “Central” Police Station, the most chaotic police precinct in Johannesburg. Rummy is bogged down with trying to start a family while his violent and abusive mother-in-law just won't move out. Meanwhile, the overzealous Ace can think of nothing better to do than to put on his "lucky" bulletproof vest and head out to do battle with criminals. The two accidentally stumble upon a massive drug haul and what ensues is a madcap escapade as the duo encounter some of the city's craftiest crooks in a race against time to catch the bad guys and claim their place in crime fighting history.

Blitz Patrollie releases at cinemas nationwide on the 10th May, with premieres in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban preceding the film’s release courtesy of Remy Martin.

DOGTOWN releases 2nd album

Dogtown releases their second single titeld “Are you alive”.

Combining the lyrics and music, it was obvious the sound of the song had to be as extensive as possible, to obtain the impact they wanted. Instrument arrangement and with some effects, the end result reflects the stadium rock vibe they hoped to achieve.

“Are you Alive”

The greatest obstacle to any band’s career is its inability to see itself the way others see it. I have realized as much during my time spent as the marketing manager and A&R at major record labels.

The biggest reason for this I suspect is the fact that it’s hard for musicians to find people who are willing to give their music an honest assessment. Major record labels (and increasingly their Indie counterparts) are simply too busy running the campaigns of their existing catalogue to fulfil a mentorship role to start-out bands.

Musicians and bands therefore often spend their formative years making mistakes because they lack any form of guidance right from the word go. In fact most bands simply do not know what their strengths and weaknesses are and can spend literally years (and thousands of rands) labouring away in the wrong direction.

I was approached by a South African songwriter a while ago who told me in no unclear terms just how difficult it is to get ones music reviewed. This writer brought to my attention how in an age when it’s easy and free to share ones music with the entire world, you still find it almost impossible to gain mentors- those industry professionals with enough time on their hands to give you guidance.

Furthermore many bands pitch demo’s to record labels and publishers seemingly in the hope that these labels and publishers will give them a ‘deal’, when in reality they are not nearly ready for one and in fact is in dire need of some good old fashioned critique coupled with constructive advice.

And so DemoTruth was born.

I have assembled a team of full-time professional producers and songwriters to help me review music and consult bands about the strengths and weaknesses in their music. Our hope is that musicians will approach us long before they pitch music to labels and producers so we can help improve the product they end up presenting. In short, we want to help musicians present themselves better by understanding what it is that makes them unique.

We will charge $10US per song review and offer full consultations for all clients who submit 5 songs or more. In a perfect scenario bands and songwriters will send us their rough demos and from these we will help them compile their 3 best songs to record and present. We are however more than willing to help established bands or solo artists do the same with their professional recordings.

We don’t believe in beating around the bush and will at times be bluntly honest with bands and artists, yet we believe every writer or band or musician will benefit from having someone tell them the truth early on in their careers so they can make necessary adjustments and eventually increase their chances of success in what is a very competitive business.

The “Simone” Factor ………….

Art Scape Theatre Cape Town April 2013 Director and Choreographer: Sean Bovim Elvis Presley, the King of Rock n Roll and the world’s most iconic music figure had a most unbelievable life story, one of flamboyance, excess and superstardom. But before all the fame, fortune and lycra bedazzled jump suites he was just Private Presley, a simple southern boy, with dream boat looks, a golden voice and a faint inducing pelvic thrust the likes of which the world had never seen before. After his untimely death the world set about immortalizing him in their many portrayals of his life, his music and the women he loved. But even the king himself could never have predicted his life to have been portrayed in a ballet.

Sean Bovim, choreographer, dancer and founder of the Bovim Ballet has managed to meld two popular art forms together and making it into one fun, high energy, foot tapping production.

The dancers on the initial opening nights nerves where a little evident in the opening scenes but softened quickly enough as they warmed up and slipped easily in to their roles and gave us a performance that was technically perfect and artistically delightful. With a clever use of minimal sets, lights and effects, the mood and atmosphere of the era was sufficiently embodied, most especially during his unforgettable crooning love numbers such as love me tender and fools rush in.

The audience were afforded some closer insight in to his early years before the controversy and trappings of his celebrity life style took over. From his early life in the army in the forties at the beginning of a music revolution, to his performances as a young dance hall rock n roll artist and then on to his Las Vegas sell out residencies, the story was told with a sensitivity and respect that one of the founders of modern music deserves, a journey told through song and the regal art form of ballet fit for a king.

Costumes were spot on and cleverly created for the rapid movement and exertion that most of the choreography required. Not only bright and devilishly stylish but they also had a touch of a modern day flair devised by local fashion designers Craig Port, Malcom Kluk and label CGDT. But the star of the show was of course was Elvis himself played by principal dancer Henk Opperman. Not only was it his smoldering looks and uncanny resemblance to the King that stole the show but also his incredible technical perfection and massive stage presence just as Elvis himself had possessed.

A great team effort from all cast members who looked as if they meant business was what set this companies performance apart from just an ordinary ballet. Everyone displayed a sense of individual responsibility to tell the story as truthfully and respectfully as possible. Sean Bovim can certainly be credited with keeping the very longstanding art of Ballet alive, fresh and hurtling towards a modern era of dance , garnering support from a whole new collective of ballet and Elvis fans alike who left with a beautiful sense of nostalgia and a renewed admiration for the King of Rock and Roll.

Ballistic Blues is a blues band that is making big airwaves in the industry. Under the same management of Blacktsoneradio Dee Theart, this band is set to go far. Ballistic Blues has just released a self-titled EP which boasts 5 tracks and you can be assured that an album review will be done in the next issue of Fanbase Music magazine, but for now enjoy this interview

Hi guys’ thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music Magazine, first of all can you tell us about each member of the band?

Hi! Thanks for the opportunity! Well, JP (bassist) is the cuddly bear in the band. We absolutely love his groove on the bass and his energy on stage. He is a HUGE fan of Bio-Plus and Redbull. Francois (drummer) is the grandpa in the band – simply because he is the oldest and always leaves first after a gig, probably to go to bed or something haha. Nick’s (vocalist) afro has become the brand and image of our band and it’s always so funny when girls come up to him and ask if they can touch it. He is the quiet one in the band and always the peace maker. Tyan (lead guitarist) is always our “go to” guy. His randomness keeps us on our toes, as we never know what crazy vibe will strike next.

As a band where did it all start?

It started in De Kuilen High School with only Tyan and Francois jamming some tunes in the garage. Later on JP joined and we did a few small gigs as a three piece with Tyan on vocals. Later on Tyan got fed up with the mic and wanted to concentrate mainly on guitar. It was a long search but luckily we met Nick and basically that’s when things became more serious.

Did you all come from musical background?

Well, it’s kind of a mixed bag. JP did a short music course at Stellenbosch and has been playing for about five years. Francois did a year at the Campus of Performing Arts (COPA) and music runs in his family. Tyan had Music as a subject in high school and his family has a bit of musical background. Nick also had Music as a subject in high school and also attended Jamrock music school.

How would you define your music, what genre would you classify it in?

How has the new EP been received by your fans and the media out there?

We started out as an old-school rock band in a garage and after some experimentation with various genres we progressed mainly to blues. Today, however, we have a lot of elements in our music, including oldschool rock and blues. If we had to describe our sound, we would call it energetic blues/rock.

The EP is still very new, but if our recent EP Launch at Aandklas is anything to go by, things are looking good. We’ve received only positive feedback from fans and the media that have heard and reviewed the album so far, seems to be impressed as well.

Who is the songwriter in the band and where do you get your inspiration from?

It was a group effort writing our older material, but our more recent material is written by our front man, Nick.

Nick has a very unique way of writing and we can only guess that the inspiration for his songs is the fairer sex.

You have just released your EP. What can you tell us about this EP, What is it called and how many songs are on it?

We are very proud and excited about our debut EP. It has five tracks on and is self-titled. The main reason for bringing out this EP is to get our music out to our fans, as we’ve had many requests from them. The EP contains new as well as older material.

Will there be a full length album in the pipeline or is it still early days for that?

It is still a bit early for that, as our focus is on promoting the EP first. But we are most definitely planning on releasing a full length album at the end of this year or the beginning of next year if all goes well.

You have currently been play listed on Zone radio, just how important is radio stations such as Zone Radio, who make it pretty easy to get your songs play listed?

It is more important than even breakfast!

Getting our songs play listed on radio stations is very important to us, because a lot of people get to know new music via this medium. Smaller and online radio stations are very important because it is difficult for up-and-coming acts to get

their music play listed on the bigger mainstream stations. Radio stations like Zone Radio give local and up-and-coming musicians the exposure that they deserve and need.

Where can we find you gigging in the month of May and there after?

We have a few things up our sleeve, but two gigs we can mention thus far is an acoustic set at &Union on the 22nd of May and a gig at Mercury on the 21st of June alongside Reburn and 3rd World Spectator. The best is to keep a close eye on our Facebook page for upcoming gigs and info.

Ballistic Blues Launches Debut EP Despite its youth, the band seems to have a die-hard attitude.

After months of playing big festivals and gigs to test the crowd’s reaction to various songs, the blues rock outfit Ballistic Blues, launched their five-track debut EP. Ballistic Blues hails from the Northern suburbs of Cape Town and was established in 2009 while the members were still in high school. The band of four is Nick Forbes (vocals and guitar), Tyan Odendal (lead guitar and backing vocals), Jp le Roux (bass) and Francois Keyser (drums).

They started out with an old-school rock sound, but very quickly added a touch on authentic blues to the mix in order to set them apart from any other band in the music scene.

The Debut EP: We had a few bumps in the road, but we worked around it and came through just fine. It was a lot of fun recording in studio, as it was a whole new thing for us to experience.

- Ballistic Blues After careful consideration, Ballistic Blues selected five of their strongest songs from their current repertoire to record for their debut EP. The EP was recorded by TeeJay Terblanche and Richard Onraet at Coffee Stained Vinyl Studios, as well as by Wouter van de Venter at V & H Music & Publishing. The renowned musician and producer, Wouter was also responsible for the entire EP’s mastering.

Although the musical style on the EP is mainly blues rock, elements of jazz, shuffle blues and strong guitar riffs can also be heard. Every song tells a particular story and is told from a somewhat unexpected angle to make you think differently about various relationship and life situations. ‘Cat And Mouse’ explores a scenario where a lady is still in love with her ex and how he exploits her feelings to suite himself. ‘Roll Along’ takes a look at the way people are influenced by music.

The song ‘No Harm’ tells the tale of a long lost love that returns to her pursuer, but hesitancy gets in the way of the relationship continuing.

This song will also be the first single off the EP that will be sent for radio playlisting and will be filmed in a music video.

“and in other news! “ Prince of Darkness Ozzy Osborne comes clean: Ozzy Osbourne has come clean on a lot of what’s going on in his personal life, including his drug taking addiction and also the latest relationship status of him and his wife Sharon It is no secret Ozzy has been fighting drug abuse for some time now, but in a recent Facebook status the prince of darkness had this to say: “For the last year and a half I have been drinking and taking drugs. I was in a very dark place and was an asshole to the people I love most, my family. However, I am happy to say that I am now 44 days sober.

Just to set the record straight, Sharon and I are not divorcing. I’m just trying to be a better person.

I would like to apologize to Sharon, my family, my friends and my band mates for my insane behavior during this period………and my fans.

Deftones bassist dies at age 49 Chi Cheng, the bassist for the Deftones, sadly passed away at the age of 42. In 2008 Cheng had been involved in a car accident, which left him in a coma for some time. Although he eventually began showing signs of improvement, he was never able to make a full recovery.

Cheng was taken to the emergency room, where he died at 3 a.m.

Cheng's mother, Jeanne Marie Cheng, wrote on the One Love for Chi website "His heart just suddenly stopped,". "He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear. He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone."

The bassist Born Chi Ling Dai Cheng on August 15, 1970 in Davis, California, Cheng joined the Deftones shortly after the band formed in 1988. Deftones was one of the leading acts of the "nu metal" movement of the mid-late nineties, Cheng's bass playing can be heard on such early Deftones classics as 1995's Adrenaline, 1997's Around the Fur, and 2000's White Pony.

But on November 4th, 2008 in Santa Clara, California, Cheng was the passenger of a car that was involved in an accident, which resulted in the bassist being ejected from the vehicle (he was not wearing a seat belt at the time), and left him in a coma and fighting for his life.

The aforementioned One Love for Chi site was set up to offer news updates and offer a donation option, to help offset mounting medical costs, and his Deftones band mates (plus special guests) performed two benefit shows in 2009. The group has continued on with Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega assuming Cheng's spot.

Beginning in 2010, some progress could be detected, including Cheng being able to move his hands slightly, and eventually being able to move his legs on command. By 2012, he was allowed to return home and continue his recovery.

Cheng's mother added on the aforementioned One Love site, "Please hold Mae and Ming and the siblings and especially Chi’s son, Gabriel in your prayers. It is so hard to let go."

Wolfmother announce split as frontman Andrew Stockdale works on new solo album Wolfmother have announced that the date of April 28, which is the Sidney Myer Music Bowl opening for Aerosmith will be their final performance.

However, this isn’t your traditional split, as current Wolfmother members Ian Peres, Elliott Hamilton, Vin Steele and Hamish Rosser will continue on with frontman Andrew Stockdale as he releases his next disc as a solo artist rather than using the band’s name.

Wolfmother broke on the scene with 2005′s self-titled release. At the time, Wolfmother were a power trio with Chris Ross and Myles Heskett rounding out the band. However, after the album and tour cycle concluded, Stockdale remained while the two other members departed. He then went about restocking the band’s lineup for 2009′s ‘Cosmic Egg’ album, a disc that also featured Peres.

Speaking about the decision to go solo, Stockdale told The Music Network (excerpted by the Sydney Morning Herald), “It’s about when people pigeonhole you and categorize you. Whatever someone thinks you can or can’t do, it’s not up to them. It’s up to the individual, and if someone thinks they’ve got me all worked out, well, hey, I’ve got a long way to go.”

Rather than continue Wolfmother’s revolving door lineup, Stockdale has decided to go the solo route. His new album, ‘Keep Moving,’ is expected to arrive next month, preceded by the single ‘Long Way to Go’ coming out this Thursday, April 26.

The rhythms and styles of bolero, tango, mambo, tejano, mariachi and traditional folklorica are included in the musical line-up, highlighting traditional favourites from countries including Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and others. Pop favourites presented in Cito’s unique arrangements include Cielito Lindo, La Bamba, Besame Mucho, Carnaval, Cancion del Mariachi, En Mi Viejo San Juan, El Cuarto de Tula, Mi Tierra (Gloria Estefan) and Sobrevivire (I Will Survive)

Cito was born in Los Angeles, California and most of his childhood was spent in an Hispanic community in Queens, New York City. Both parents influenced Cito with their musical abilities - especially his Puerto Rican mother who sang and played Spanish guitar.

Now living in South Africa since his teens, CITO is best known as the frontman of the legendary multi award-winning rock band, WONDERboom; currently celebrating their 17th year on the local music scene. Showcasing his diversity in recent years, Cito has had media and audiences alike raving at his heart-stopping portrayal of Jesus in the hit musical Jesus Christ Superstar; Frederick Trumper in Chess - The Musical and more recently singing Queen's music in Bovim Ballet's Queen at the Ballet.

Performing alongside Cito in El Cantante is 12-time SAMA nominee MARTIN ROCKA founding member, alongside Cito, of WONDERboom, and has notched up many other accolades including most recently being the MD of the 2012 SAMA Awards as well as Idols SA Season 8. One of Martin's favourite sayings is "You make music with people, the notes come later" and its on this basis that he's thrilled to be partnering with longtime friend and fellow musician to explore an on-going desire of his to go out of his comfort zone to perform music hispanically.

What made you get into radio?

It all happened purely by accident. I wrote a guide about my travels in South Korea and was interviewed on the book by the Unicorn on Zone Radio. At the time, I was looking for a medium or forum where I could combine all my theoretical and practical experience and use that to help people. Internet

Zone Radio is the best radio station….why?

I’m a firm believer in the adage, “power to the people”. In my opinion, Zone Radio is the only radio station in South Africa that lives up to that adage. Their programming is listener driven, which means the listener controls the content that is aired. Therefore, it is no surprise then, that the music played on Zone is enjoyed by all. Furthermore, they provide a platform in order for broadcasting talent to be able to develop and shine. If that’s not “power to the people,” then I don’t know.

What do you like about Zone Radio?

II like that business model that Zone Radio adopts and what they stand for.

Nowhere else in South Africa will you be able to present a radio show, with no or little experience or formal training, in such a short space of time, with the support of all and sundry! It is absolutely an amazing business model that proves that “out of the box” thinking is what is needed in this country!

What made you get into radio?

I suppose because music was such a huge part of my life it was no surprise I delved in to the mobile DJ line and moved on to Karaoke DJ’ing later in life. I simply love being able to play any form of music to an audience of any kind and as DJ’ing was a normal transition for me, being able to present a radio show just makes sense in my life What’s your fave genre of music?

This is an impossible question for me. The music database in my head is so diverse it would be unfair to answer this question. I few names and the genre of music they produce always come to mind first and then the next time I think about it, other names come to mind, and the cycle never stops, Jazz, Blues, Pop, Swing, Hip Hop, Metal, Rock, Rock & Roll, Alternative, Funk, Fusion, Acid Jazz, Classic Jazz, Classic Rock…. Geesh, see now I cannot stop … It is a loose loose question for me!

What would be your dream play list if you had to play your top 10 songs of all time?

Based on what I just told you above, imagine me trying to create a top 10 playlist of all time, I would start and change it continuously.

Jeffrey Eugenides – The Virgin Suicides The Virgin Suicides explores the darker side of the typical American family. Even though the title of the book hints at innocence, it soon becomes apparent that this could not be further from the truth. Eugenides has the ability to create complex characters that keeps the story interesting. There’s a reason why this book is on nearly every list of books to read before you die.

If you haven’t read this masterpiece I strongly suggest you do. The story is emotionally driven and will touch your heart from the very first page. The five Lisbon girls will make you realize that sometimes there’s more than meets the eye, and an innocent smile could very well be a way of hiding a few dark secrets.

Cecilia Lisbon was the first to go. After a failed suicide attempt by cutting her wrists, she finally succeeded by jumping from a second story window only to be impaled by a fence post. We all said our screaming goodbyes and sat in the cinema. The worst part of the entire night was the fact that the aircon in the cinema made you feel what deaths door must be like, my organs started freezing, and coupled with agony riddled feet in heels, I’m surprised we came out alive.

Olympus has fallen starts up with Aaron Eckhart as the President of USA with Ashley Judd the first lady, and Gerry Butler – yes I can call him that – as the Presidents secret service Presidential Detail.

This movie starts with a bang– one that you expect but it nonetheless surprises you. The President, his family and the secret service detail are involved in a tragic car accident which leads to President Benjamin Asher(Aaaron Eckhart) firing his Secret Service Agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler).When a powerful terrorist group seizes command of the White House and takes the president hostage, the nation watches as the Speaker of the House (Morgan Freeman) becomes the acting president, having to plan a rescue mission to break into “the most protected place on Earth”. Banning manages to get into the White House as it comes under siege from all sides. Fighing back against the heavily-armed invaders, Banning must rely on his extensive knowledge of the building to rescue the president, and prevent the situation from spiraling into all-out war. The whitehouse takes the biggest beating out of all characters in the film, and I stopped doing a body count as the attack begins. The Banning character strikes me more like an mercenary than a secret service Agent, but he is reminds you of the Bruce Willis Character in Die Hard.

There’s something truly mesmerizing about Hollywood – the dreams and hopes of millions and the lottery- like lifestyle for those who manage to be in the right place at the right time to make the right contacts and become the worlds favourites. The very rare opportunity came to Joburg on the 8th and 9th April to catch a glimpse of A-list Stars, at an exclusive premiere. When my eyes glossed over the words “Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart in person”, I turned into what I feared most – the giggly, gushing and frankly sickening teenage stalker we all were at one point. No hesitation – no Question! I booked as many tickets as I could. To be honest the promise of seeing these men in the flesh far outweighed my knowing what movie would be shown. We arrived to a red carpet packed with fans and hired paparazzi which only fed into everyone’s fantasy of fame.

Finally their arrival was announced – premature excitement as Gerard butler climbed the escalators like a small zoo animal, with Aaron the more reserved and controlled of the two. The way these 2 men sachet down the red carpet with such charisma and charm, with every woman flinging themselves like sacrifices, they impressed me with the way they connected with people and spoke to each person like we were in fact the people making their careers – standard Hollywood practice to gush over fans – but with a genuine and heartfelt impact that makes you realize “that’s why they are A-list”. I must admit that the only part my poor boyfriend played was to hold my handbag and guard my stuff fiercely as I flung forward trying to get closer – teenage stalker shows herself again – but I was ready to take out anyone in my way. I managed to get a wink and touching of hands and smiles which I will take to my grave as meaning more than it really did, like most groupies and stalkers. These 2 men are genuinely funny and charming and while Gerard’s class clown personality came out in full force to entertain the masses, Aaron was the truest gentleman, with his softer approach, it signaled to me a man who had spent

Olympus Has Fallen is predictable and despite the setting has been seen before, but I would recommend it to anyone who loves action movies, action heroes, overtly patriotic sentiment and is in the mood for great entertainment. I enjoyed this movie from start to finish and will definitely see it again – but then again I am a hopeless fan of Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and Kickboxer where the bad guy always gets taught a lesson! Olympus Has Fallen has everything you need to rival any of the classic action films and let’ be honest it has plenty of eye-candy!

Just Music Session featuring Zebra & Giraffe and The Anti Retro Vinlys.

The most recent ‘Just Music Session’ was held on the 4 th April 2013 at the World of Yamaha in Sandton. Acts included one of my personal favorites Zebra & Giraffe as well as new comers, originally from Durban namely The Anti Retro Vinyls. Shadow Club was also due to play, but due to a medical issue faced by one of their band members they were unable to perform.

The evening kicked off with the Anti Retro Vinyls, who were just as pleased with the free welcome drinks as the crowd was. Don’t let their ‘greaser’ looks fool you; these guys have an unmatched live sound. There seems to be a trend of costal bands making their way to the Highveld for increased exposure, and as a result we get bands like The Anti Retro Vinlys, with a significantly distinct flavour. The guys are a well-blended group, with an Indie/Alternative and ‘dirty’ style and clearly cohesive stage presence. I predict they will only get better with time, undoubtedly increasing their popularity with the groupies. I was highly impressed with these guys and look forward to seeing them progress and grow in the industry. Keep your eyes peeled for their hard copy Album -Trouble - Launching soon! On a side note the venue – World of Yamaha is absolutely stunning. The design is clean and the concept of all the products on display is innovative in its own right. The lighting and sound set up is perfect. Just Music has honestly chosen a superior venue to host their Just Music Session, and I look forward to the next one!

After a short interval and sound change, it was time for Zebra & Giraffe, and they always impress! These guys are naturals on stage, and are one of the few bands that are diverse, from their recoded music to live shows, they are all round super stars. Songs flow harmoniously and their interaction with each other is seamless. Zebra & Giraffe played some old favourites and some killer new tracks, they had the audience on their toes and the vibe was remarkable. Their performance was polished and highly appreciated by the crowd. A live set by Zebra & Giraffe never disappoints.

Over all the night didn’t end too late but spirits were high after the two performances, as people left the buzzing venue, I was pleasantly surprised. South African music is on the way up, and I have no doubt that our talent is on par with any other country, my hope is that more venues will allow this type of event and showcase of pure talent to happen, and more often! Let’s support these bands, only with us as fans can they grow and continue to provide entertainment relative to us as South Africans everyday!

How did you get into photography?

When I had just started college studying I was studying graphic design and multimedia, I read a rather old but extensive book on photography before the invention of the digital camera, I then decided to buy a camera and experiment with photography as a hobby and art form. I began working at a studio and it just sort of stuck.

What camera are you currently using?

I use the Nikon D300 it’s not the fanciest camera in the Nikon Arsenal but it is strong and sturdy and it gets the job done and is quite reliable, considering everything I put it through.

What do you like about Photography?

There are a million things I love about photography but I will give you 2 It’s such a powerful and dynamic tool for expression, one can express the truth or a fiction with one picture. A picture can absorb and impact the viewer in a way that needs no language or explanation. When one talks about pinhole cameras, disposables point and shoots and of course mobile phone cameras - they are all pretty easy to get a hold of

without breaking the bank and they have made it arguably the most accessible art form of our times.

Photography is always full of surprises and challenges but still manages to be expressive and fun; it’s kind of somewhere between playing a game, a scientific experiment, a job and at times even an adventure.

What style of Photography do you like?

Well honestly there are so many styles, I have dabbled in many but not all, I appreciate all styles. Of photography they are all just different expressions of a creative medium which I am passionate about and love.

What I enjoy photographing the most would also be a long list. At the moment I probably enjoy photographing people the most but favourites always change. I also like taking pictures of bands, performance art, travel, fine arts, documentaries stuff, as well as advertising, glamour and architecture.

Where do you see yourself in five years, in terms of your photography?

My work oriented goals are always changing towards the stuff I am involved in at any given time. I think I would like to travel a lot more and be more involved in collaborations with people, do more fine art photography and exhibit my work regularly.

I would like to try and Involve myself with more concept based work, trying to make a difference and contribute something important to people’s lives and our country with my photography.

Who is your favourite photographer and why?

I am not sure I have one favourite but some of the most recent stuff I have loved for his ingenuity, artistry and execution is the Amazing Underwater Dog Photography of Seth Casteel. You really should check it, and 2 old favourites of mine who I can’t go without mentioning, Arno Minkkinen & Richard Avedon who have huge portfolios of phenomenal work that continues to inspire many years after their pictures were taken.

What advice do you have for upcoming photographers?

Learn from whatever you can, and don’t be afraid to ask people for help or advice on how to shoot something that you are finding challenging. As well as experimenting all the time I look at tons of material: articles, videos online, blogs, websites, magazines, books…

Describe a day in the life of a photographer?

I can’t speak for all photographers but for me as soon as I wake up, most days I am doing a frantic combo of things which include: emailing tagging, posting, making picture selections, editing, re-touching, sorting, driving, going to meetings, carrying lots of equipment, setting up for shoots and of course taking photographs - depending on the backlog of work that needs attention and my schedule, the amounts of time I associate to each of these things varies.

Well, If you love taking pictures then it’s a good start but it’s tough industry with an endless well of technology and expensive equipment, so figuring out where you want to go with it and what you want to photograph contextually can be a good way of making smart moves when buying equipment which you hope will pay itself off by being useful to you.

Lastly but perhaps most importantly let everything inspire you: Live, Love, Create, Photograph, Inspire
