It is quite fitting that for the month of October, I have been inspired to write an article on one of my fave bands at the moment “Volume Conflict”. Why the month of October though I hear you ask? Well we have dubbed this month ROCKtober and if you’re looking for a “very rocking band” then look no further than this awesome grunge rock band. Though founded in August 2007, Volume Conflict was formerly launched in 2012 with the release of their "Demo" CD "Pixels" and their Music Video of their song "Wake me Up" on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=6uGg7ZUBW3w in January. With Rhythmic beats, strong riffs and a hypnotizing voice Volume Conflict seems to have it all. Lyrically they are equally impressive, with strong sing along chorus’ and harmonized screams to die for. http:// www.reverbnation.com/volumeconflict

I must say both interviews were cool to do but the follow up interview was my favorite feature of the band as I got to meet them in person when they were on tour in Johannesburg. We met up at Mikes Kitchen in the small town of Roodepoort. One thing I can say about this band is they are very down to earth and easy to talk to. As they spoke about life, the music industry and so on, although each band member interacted very well, lead vocalist Triston Smith did most of the talking. My memory of Triston was a very soft spoken person. Which was kind of weird and unique because with the songs Volume Conflict make, there is nothing soft spoken about him then, he can really hold a “scream” note. But speaking to him one on one, I could see he was real, sincere and honest, I could also pick up that he was a sensitive delicate soul. Similar to what Kurt Cobain was from Nirvana fame.
ARTICLE by:
Volume Conflict are no strangers to Fanbase Music Magazine, as they graced our front cover in January (check out the link here http://issuu.com/fanbasemag/ docs/issue_13_pdf) I also did a follow up interview with the band in November and you can check out the issue by clicking on this link http://issuu.com/ fanbasemag/docs/issue_22
The rest of the band were so down to earth, pitching in here and then into the interview. I just wish I could have spent more time with them and made it to one of their gigs. So who are the members of Volume Conflict? You get the three brothers of the band. "CHINO" Triston Smith - Vocals & Lead Guitar, "LEE" Leon Smith – Drums, "STITCH" Stefan Smith - Bass Guitar, and then you get,"SNOW" Wilco Heunis - Lead Guitar who joined the band a little later in their career. These four guys have managed to form a sound that is so unique and good enough to compete with some of the best bands of the world. Then there is their manager, Elaine Constantine who is the driving force for the band. She is defo one of the hardest working managers I’ve come across and is one of the real reasons for their success so far. One thing I can say about this band is, they have talent. They have what it takes to make it big in this business. They really do rock!!! And it is just a matter of time till they get to that status of rock stardom they so deserve.

Blackstoneradio Releases New Music Video The groove rock band Blackstoneradio recently released their second music video, for their song ‘Sweet Mary Jane’. The video reached over 1 000 views within the first week. Blackstoneradio hails from Cape Town and was established in a garage in Bellville in 2008. The band of four is JC Malengret (vocals), Francois Louw (guitar), Trevor Edwards (bass) and Dylan Haskin (drums). In an industry often characterised by overproduction, Blackstoneradio’s music echoes simpler times when the amplified guitar was purer and the vocal melodies hauntingly charismatic. The Song: In many ways ‘Sweet Mary Jane’ changed the way we thought about our sound. It opened up new ideas around what type of music we’re capable of pulling off as a band.
‘Sweet Mary Jane’ is the third track off Blackstoneradio’s debut album, ‘Out of Rock’, which was released earlier this year. With its folky intro riff, the song’s feel is a noticeable departure from the band’s more characteristic rock sound. The Video: We wanted to create imagery that fit in with the lyrics and have fun doing it.
The concept for the video came from having discussions with a good friend of the band, Troy Davies (from Retroyspective), who was eager to take on the project of creating a light-hearted and fresh video production. The band ran a search on their social media platforms and via a few media partners to find the perfect ‘Sweet Mary Jane’ leading lady. Jacqueline Roux stood out among the entrants and won the search. Jacqueline is a young and talented singer songwriter with a natural radiance about her which fitted the idea around Sweet Mary Jane’s character perfectly. In the video three of the band members (JC, Dylan and Trevor) are seen in fairly arbitrary settings minding their own business, when Mary Jane catches their eye and they follow after her in a hot pursuit. The fourth band member, Francois, plays the role of the always-present, guitar-strapped narrator. The video was shot over two days with a very small behind-the-scenes crew. Locations include a marina and a forest in Cape Town, an old airstrip and a country movie set on the West Coast, and Jacqueline’s actual house in the suburbs. Francois was also very honoured to hook-up a full sponsorship deal from Ibanez and his brand new guitar can also be spotted in the video. Videographer and Editor: Retroyspective - www. retroyspective.co.za Sponsors: Ibanez - www.ibanez.com Actress: Jacqueline Roux - www.youtube.com/Ja7cquiRoux Hair and Make-up: Razana Omar Hair and Make-up - www.razanaomar.com The Launch: The video is light-hearted and upbeat and will instantly put a smile on your face. Blackstoneradio officially launched the ‘Sweet Mary Jane’ music video during an intimate, sold-out performance at Altydgedacht Wine Estate in Durbanville early September 2013. The video’s leading lady, Jacqueline Roux, opened the evening with some of her own compositions and collaborated with Francois on guitar on one of her tracks. Hey Seth, it’s awesome to be featuring you in Fanbase Music Magazine. Can you tell us a bit about yourself? Yeah thanks for the opportunity to have me appear in your awesome magazine. Well I’ll keep it very brief haha. I stumbled into music when I was about 16 years old. I needed to find an outlet, a way to escape reality as my parents were divorced and I had never really gotten any attention from them so I rebelled in school etc. I found that I could pick up guitar fairly quickly and so my journey began. I figured I would have to “wheel ‘n deal” to buy myself equipment and so I did over the years until I had decent enough gear to play live shows.
Did you come from a musical background? Well not really in the great scheme of things parse, I have always believed that I felt like the odd one out in my family as I never really truly connected with anyone. My father has always been in the clubbing scene though ever since he was younger so I guess it may be in the genes after all lol.
What is Emotion FX? Can you tell us a bit about this project? Emotions affect all of us, we are humbled by them and we are ruled by them. This is the essence of human nature which defines us as a species where guilt and conscience determine our being in consciousness. This is the emotional effects, a representation of a double-edged sword and double entendre. It is also a form of emotional expression where meaning has no end. Therefore it is a growing entity on its own. The idea came to me as an epiphany one day when I realized that I needed to come out of myself and become humble to the fact that I own nothing in this world, I came into this existence with nothing and that I will leave with nothing. Just let things be and let life flow the way the universe flows. These are the moral aspects that determine and guide my will to be at peace with everything.
So is all your music like that or do some of your tracks have vocals? I am currently working on an EP which I am hoping to distribute soon. I would like to have a few tracks with vocals as I would also like to collaborate and feature with other artists and vocalists hopefully in the near future.
How do you put an Emotion FX song together, and what is the process involved from beginning of production to the final product?
What kind of genre would you classify Emotion FX?
I generally will feel a certain vibe or especially if an instance of circumstance will trigger a certain emotion where I would have to express myself in a particular way, I would then take that energy and filter it into positive and creative productivity. This process is randomly paced as I try not to rush the writing process, but instead allow it the time and energy it needs to “Mould from Clay” as it were.
In essence it is Electronic music or Electronica. However various elements of other genres and sub-genres such as Dubstep and Electro-Disco influence the sound depending on that specific creative vibe at that point during production.
Essentially for me, a track can take a day to lay the foundation and sometimes a couple months to finalize and master, so it definitely depends on timing and circumstance. Not to mention the fact that I am a bit overly obsessive-compulsive lol.
I gave some of your stuff a listen, and I must say it is awesome! But it is very different, and also some of the songs are instrumental, can you tell us more about that? I believe to truly appreciate an art form of expression I don’t think the need for anything else is necessary to get the message across to the listener. As long as they connect with the music, that is what’s most important. Although, vocalizations do also create a certain atmosphere and tone to the track. Think of music that really inspires and pulls at your heart-strings. Ludwig Van Beethoven for example made a huge impact in the music world, influencing people to feel a certain way, causality from ear to brain to consciousness to sub consciousness.
“Emotions affect all of us. This is the essence of human nature”
Do you play live shows and if so, where have you played before? I have been in and formed many bands over the years, from Alternative and Hard Rock to Groove Metal, so you could say I have been around. I also dabbled a bit as a Techno-Trance Music Producer and DJ many years ago lol. However this new “Project” (if you could call it that) is a new notion to me. I am completely unaware of the typical crowd response and not really sure what kind of reaction awaits me. I just want to express myself and if anyone feels my vibe they should just link into it and go crazy as it’s all about having a good time. My official opening is in October this year and will take place along-side Frederico Fernandez (Formely of Son Of 1000) with his new South African band – FSPOT.
Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last words for your fans and the readers out there? It was my utmost pleasure. Thanks again for this honor. Catch Emotion FX at the Official FSPOT Album Launch bending your mind at Tanz Café in Fourways on the 17th of October 2013…Then hold on to your butts as Emotion FX makes your ears bleed gravy-So be there…rip out the floorboards and go crazy…Skadouche! What is some of your musical influences? To be completely honest, I never really knew what music or influences inspired my music production whatsoever, as I never really listened to music of that nature, and after doing some research I found that typically you could classify my ”sound” as a certain “Electro-Step” vibe, a relatively untapped sound / genre / sub-genre, and so I am in the process of developing and refining my sound in that aspect. I just hope that mainstream music today has an acceptance for my music without an exception as it is, regardless of relevance to my unique sound according to whether it has an overall appreciation on that level or relative in that sense by those modern standards according to the current scene where there are no barriers or any kind of limitations for that matter-not that it bothers me if it doesn’t, I just think it would be a beneficial experience for a larger audience to appreciate my musical expression. People always need to feel that they can relate to something and vice versa, and so I would just like to provide that opportunity for likeminded people to connect with one another in a positive environment respectively.
How can people get hold of you, do you have any social media links? Yeah, I have finally conquered the “Information space” lol…I am currently still in the process of completing the official Emotion FX Websitewhich is going to be awesome just by the way. VODACOM IN THE CITY There is a special feeling in the air as the 4th October finally arrives. Vodacom in the City is finally upon us and you can defo see the excitement all over the social media with different statuses and tweets talking about the event. But before it was time for the big event, we were all invited for a VodaCom in the City Press conference where members of the press were allowed to ask questions of 3 of the 4 bands that were playing at the event. The bands in questions were Skunk Anasie, The Hives and winners of the Vodacom in the City opening band competition, Al Bairre. The press conference was held at the very smart and stylish African Pride Hotel. I arrived a few minutes before the scheduled time so I could get myself settled and make sure I get a good seat. First band to take to the panel of chairs was Skunk Anansie. I felt a rush of nerves come over me as they walked into the room. I mean come on, this is Skunk Anansie after all. But it turns out they are very down to earth and a cool bunch of people. The band seems happy to be there and answered every question with a relaxed and friendly attitude. Hot Topics mainly spoken about was the band reuniting after an eight-year hiatus, Skunk Anansie have “come home”, says lead singer Skin. Along with band members Ace (guitar), Cass Lewis (bass) and Mark Richardson (drums), Skunk Anansie have rekindled the feeling and soul of their previous work to continue the distinctive and dynamic sound that has made them the award-winning music force they are today. When asked the question has the bands sounds and attitude changed since the eight year gap. The answer was defo yes. But Skunk Anansie was always a changing band, even from the beginning. That’s what makes them unique. They would get bored if they just made the same sounding album for 20 years, they are always looking to change things. So if you’re in a certain kind of mood you could put on a certain Skunk Anansie album and it will speak to you, but a week later you may be in a different mood and you have the option of listening to a totally different sounding album and it will speak to you in a way it needs to. That’s what made them successful explains bassist Cass Lewis. After only been given 15 minutes with Skunk Anansie, it was announced our time was up. To which lead vocalist Skin expressed her disappointment clearly wishing she could have more time with us.
PRESS CONFERENCE
After a short Paparazzi pose for the cameras, the band made their way out, as we waited for the next band to take to the table. After a few short minutes South African Vodacom in the City opening act winners took to the table. I can see the band looked very nervous even for this press conference which they confirmed by answering a question asking them if they are nervous for the gig tonight and they laughingly explained they were even nervous for the press conference not even talking about the gig. The band soon calmed down and answered all the questions like pros and one thing I can say about this band is, they are very funny people and awesome to talk too. Getting a feel of the band they seem very energetic and they assured us they planned to bring that energy to the stage. As the questions continued, once again time was up and it was time for the next band to come to the table. One thing I can say about Al Bairre is they seem very awesome and down to earth and I can’t wait to get a chance to feature them in the mag. Next up was another International band The Hives. I was also particularly excited on seeing. After a few minutes of quickly running to the toilet and having a cup of coffee we were instructed to come back into the press room and wait for The Hives to take the stage. As they come out to the stage, they were all wearing black pants and white shirts, which seemed to be the topic mostly thrown to them. The press asked them about their unique fashion sense of always wearing black and white and would they ever change their image. To which they answered, why should they, it has worked for them this far and changing it will prove it hasn’t been working. After all the fashion questions were finished with I was able to really make my mind up about this band and once again they were awesome and very down to earth and eager to answer all the questions. It seems like The Hives pride themselves on winning over a crowd, even if they’re in a foreign country and it’s a tough crowd, they go out of their way to win and gain some fans. Which is awesome because they defo deserve a huge fan club all over the world. The band was also very entertaining towards the press and always having humor in their answers, but they lifted a few eye brows when they said South Africa is a lot like Australia haha, when some people answered back, do they know the rivalry of our two sport teams. It was all good though.
This was a very cool experience, getting to know each band a little better. They are all very down to earth and a bunch of talented musicians. Be sure to check out the Gig review of Vodacom in the City on the next page. A big thanks goes to Vodacom, Seed Experiences, and GWM South Africa for putting this all together, a great time was had indeed.
Review by: Duwyne Clayton
I managed to get inside the venue drink in hand by the time the first band of the evening went on; Cue Cape Town’s Al Bairre, now if you haven’t heard of Al Bairre by now then you must have been living under a rock for the last year and a bit, made up of 5 very talented musicians that combine everything that is right with Indie music today. Their set started the evening off with an absolute bang, people were flocking to the stage and dancing like no one’s business, frontman Nic Preen then set every sane minded girl in the crowd into an absolute tizzy as he danced, galloped and pranced across the stage to a modernized and indiefied version of Cyndi Laupers “Girl’s Just Wanna Have Fun” Was I one of those girls? I’ll never tell. Yes. The answer is yes I was. As the song ended they launched in to one of my personal favourites “When I Was Tall” and kept the vibe going while constantly taking the energy to a higher level after each song, and to top it all off for their encore -the only other band to get one besides Skunk Anansie, mind you- they covered The Violent Femmes’ Blister In The Sun. A truly remarkable set, that really set the standards high for that evening, I’d be lying if I said my heart wasn’t filled with happiness for South African music at the end of all that. The next 15 minutes are an absolute blur (as was most of the evening) I’m lucky enough to have gotten a VIP ticket for the show, which means all my booze, food and lush portaloos were taken care of that evening, how I made it to the stage for Alt-J I will never know, I managed to find my friends, do some shooters, refill the drink, use the loo and make it back to my “safe spot” to the left of the sound box while Alt-J set up. Alt-J being from Leeds in England which is the home of my people FYI, I knew that I would show these English exactly how we South Africans party. The crowd swarmed to the stage in the thousands, people raised their hands in triangle shapes towards the stage, showing their love. Girls cried, guys cried, I cried because someone stepped on my foot. Alt-J lit up the stage with their sound and showmanship. People were singing so loud, they could have packed up and went home and I don’t think the music would have stopped. And how amazing did they sound live? If I had closed my eyes, and blocked out the sounds of girls –and

VODACOM IN THE CITY Gigg Review
Its 5:45 on Friday, and I’m speeding down the highway because I’ve left my ticket to In The City on my bed at home, my taxi is due at 6:30 and by now I’m convinced I’ll never make it.
some guys- fangirling up a storm I could convince myself that I was alone in Photograph by: Amy Bell my car listening to their CD. For their 2nd or 3rd last song they played Breezeblocks, the only Alt-J song I really know the words to, I’m ashamed to admit. Then just like that the show was over. And now my night really began, The Hives. A band that has been sitting on my bucket list for years and years, and finally in 15 minutes I could cross them off. Back to the bar, more shots, more drinkypoos and more portaloo. At some stage someone shoved a boerewors roll in my hand telling me I would need my strength for the next hour. More Shots. Saying hello to more friends, found my friend Ben, who is substantially taller than the average In The City go-er, contemplate jumping on his shoulders for The Hives, realize Ill suffer massive vertigo and probably die if I fall from that height. NO NO NO NO why is my drink empty, the band is going to go on in 5 minutes, back to the bar! And they’re out of vodka! Brandy it is! Back to the stage to secure my spot closer to the front, where I get to dance and mosh with my people. And then it begins, the band comes out dressed in matching mariachi outfits, Howlin’ Pelle greets us in his strange yet alluring half Swedish half American old time accent, he shouts across the stage “Are you ready to have a new favourite song?!” And the crowd goes wild, he shouts it again, but even louder this time, the crowd goes absolutely mad, and kicks off in to the famed yet so underrated “Hate to Say I Told You So” I jammed, I think I broke something, I moshed and I sang until my voice was hoarse. “Go right ahead” and “Walk Idiot Walk” were also partially responsible for why I couldn’t lift my head off the pillow the next morning. There was, at some point a moment where a few tears escaped my eyes. Just from pure joy of a dream coming true, another girl standing nearby was
doing the exact same thing, she saw me gave me a huge hug like I was a long lost friend and then carried on dancing. That’s I love about music. It brings all different people from all different walks of life together. And then suddenly, just like that The Hives were gone. With a promise to come back and a few quick bows they left the stage. Back to the bar! Definite bio break was needed as well. Caught up with a friend who apparently bawled his eyes out the last time Skunk Anansie was here as he couldn’t go due to the fact that he was 11. We do more shots, hyping ourselves up. And then make our way to the stage area, where we find a good spot. Oh, and what a great spot it was, the lights go down, Skin and the band walk out on to the stage and she cries “Jo’buuuuuurg! Are – you-ready?!” And the crowd erupts into screams, I swear on my life it was deafening. As they started their first song, there wasn’t one person in the crowd who wasn’t dancing. Skin’s showmanship and haunting vocals took the energy so much higher than what it was already. I sang (read screamed) along to Twisted until I was convinced my throat was bleeding. The next thing we know, Skin is walking straight past us, literally 40 cm’s away. She walks to the back of the crowd, and asks us to carry her back. My word, I have never seen a 6ft9 man move the way my friend Ben did to get in that line of fire. My first instinct was to get the hell out of the impact zone and whip out my phone for photos. And they were spectacular, I will be jealous of them until the day I die. The whole final act was worth the ticket price 10 times over. After Skunk Anansie finished, we decided to linger for a bit in the VIP Lounge, decorated to the nines with floating red lights, bar stools and lounge area, mobile charge stations – of which I’m told there were many across the entire venue.

We were then lured out by the awesome sound that is Boys Noize, being dragged out in to the middle of the dance floor because we apparently needed “to get our dance on It was now headed towards 2:30, and my legs were sore, but I still danced, eventually we knew we had to go find a taxi and skedaddle on home. The last thing I remember before closing my eyes was lying down in the taxi on the lap of a friend and looking up at the lights of the city as we drove through it. The echoes of an epic night ringing in my ears. Easily one of the greatest moments of my life. Fanbase Music Magazine would like to thank everyone from Seed Experiences, One-eyed Jack and Vodacom for making this all possible.

Are you a first timer at Cool Runnigs? My first performance was indeed at Cool Runnings and for the first time I got to experience that feeling of being up there all by myself with no backing tracks. Just me and my guitar, singing to an audience. I can sit here trying to think up ways of explaining the feeling that I got but there are no words. It was surreal, almost like a dream that I could have just pinched myself and woken up from. I loved it. Can you tell us a bit more about yourself?
Cool Runnings Another discovery at Cool Runnings is the talented Brad Knight and we had the privilege to have a chat with him so enjoy the interview How did this all start? Wow, tough question… I have always loved music from as far back as I can remember. As a little boy I used to run around people’s houses searching for any kind of musical instrument I could find, I’d just sit there for ages banging aimlessly on the poor things, haha. My Dad also played a big part in it – we used to listen to a whole range of bands and genres in the car on my way to school every morning before I started boarding at Kearsney College. Funny story actually, on my way to my early morning tennis sessions with my Dad we’d listen to these alternative rock bands and id sit there in the passenger seat strumming along with my tennis racket… the most frequent artists being Lenny Kravitz and Just Jinjer! I just sat there imagining what it must be like to perform in front of so many people and make music for a living. I’ve loved music ever since. And I’ve been very privileged to have been ‘found’ and given the opportunity of professional guidance from Ard Matthews, the front man of Just Jinjer. Seems as if my dreams are becoming a reality. I couldn’t be happier.
I matriculated last year and decided to take a gap year this year as I wasn’t sure on what to study yet. I started the year off being very indecisive about how to fill all the time I had this year constructively. I started off by taking part in a one month marine biology course in the Seychelles. I absolutely loved the time I spent there but I knew it wasn’t for me. I had a plan organized for when I got back to go off on a Euro trip with a friend and maybe work at a Kibbutz in Israel but the plans fell through and I was then stuck with what I should be doing. I got very stuck into my guitar and singing in my bedroom as I didn’t really know what else to do. My dad wasn’t very happy about it but it turned out very well in the end. The more practice I got with my singing and playing, the more confident I started feeling in my voice and playing ability. I took a trip up to Durban, which my dad was very volatile about too as he still thought I wasn’t being constructive which was true I suppose. Anyway, I met someone there who I got on very well with who happened to know Ard Matthews very well as he’s currently dating her mom. I left Durbz and headed back to my home in Cape Town. Long story short, Ard heard me singing through a voicenote over whatsapp and apparently liked what he heard and asked if I had an original song. Well… I didn’t. But that didn’t stop me. I wrote the first verse and chorus of my first original song that day and sent it to him. I think he must have liked what he heard as he asked me to come record it with him in Durban. So I flew up again and things just went uphill from there. Been working with him ever since. That was early August if I remember correctly. I also love being surrounded my friends so I go out quite a bit. Basically, I just love life and will do everything and anything depending on my mood. Beach, football, friends, music, family and good times. I was born at the Queen Mary’s hospital in London where I was the biggest baby they’d weighed in 10 years. I don’t know how that works because I’m now 18 and am still like 5 ft 8.
BRAD KNIGHT….
INTERVIEW
But I would have to say that I was raised in the Cape, have lived here for as long as I remember. Cape Town will always be my home. I love playing football of any sort. Beach, 5 aside, indoor, full field… any! I really just have a passion for adrenaline and fun. I chase anything that will get this heart pumping with excitement. Do you play any other instruments? I play bits of everything I can get my hands on I suppose. I have played a bit of piano and drums and used to take violin lessons when I was younger. I’m also quite a ninja at the triangle ;) But my favourite of all is my baaaby – and by that I’m referring to my little travel guitar, of course! Had a lesson or two when I was a lot younger but am pretty much entirely self -taught. I’ve always loved the guitar more than anything else. In my spare time I sit in my room with some snacks, play my guitar, listen to music, make music and well. I just try my hardest to be creative.
I do write my own music. I’ve started only recently though when I wrote my first for Ard about a month and a bit ago. I have one full original called ‘No Longer a Problem” which I’ve recorded with Ard already which he helped me out with but it hasn’t left the studio yet. I’m working on a lot of new stuff at the moment which I’m excited to finish up and hopefully record so keep a look ouArd has been really great in inviting me to open for a lot of his recent performances which has thrown me in the deep end a bit but I’ve loved the pressure and feel like I’ve grown a lot faster than I would have if I had have dipped my toes in the pool. He’s an awesome guy to work with, he makes me feel very comfortable in my moments of fluctuating adrenaline and nerves and I always have a lot of fun around him. I will definitely be playing more with him in the future; we are still in contact regularly as he’s my mentor and the compass point to my hopefully incredible future in music ;)
Who is your Idol? I have many favourites. But Ard Matthews is definitely someone who I aspire to be like and I’ve always loved his music so I’ve been closely watching and learning from him… So in other words it’ll be his fault if I stuff up ;) I’m just waiting for the time that we can both get on up stage and sing a song together. Maybe, hopefully, even an original. Do you have any words of advice? Wow… there’s so much talent out there in South Africa at the moment that people don’t know about. I would strongly encourage readers to go and research some of the up and coming local artists. I’ve been lucky to witness some in action: Lieutenant Vinyl and The Kickstands – both of whom are also associated with Ard. They were fantastic. What genre of music do you play? I play covers from many different genres so I wouldn’t say that I just stick to certain sounds. I mix it up with some Michael Buble time stuff to indie, commercial pop, acoustic stuff like Ed Sheeran , and many others. I’m not actually too sure what genre my music is. I don’t really want to be associated with one either. I’m trying to be myself whenever I write my own stuff and I further this production process when something sounds good to me, that’s really all there is to it. But so far it’s just my guitar and I, which I quite like.

INTERVIEW
Rocke Hunter Kemp ...
We got together for the first time with young musician Rocke Hunter Kemp, Hunter as we would like to call him.
How many instrument do u play and which one is your favorite.?
Hi Hunter thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music Magazine, can you tell us where and how this passion for music began?
What do you do in your spare time?
My music passion started when I was 10 years old and I picked up my mother's guitar. I decided that I'd like to play this stringed thing and coax some decent sounds out of it. It is my dream to pursue as a career but and this point I am deciding which direction to take my life in terms of studies. We visited a Tuesday night gig @coolrunnings, and you were the talk of the town, was that your first live performance? My first performance was Knocking On Heavens Door at a music progress concert at my primary school DPHS when I was 10. Wow you started at a very young age, tell us a bit about your year of 2013? Yeah I've been so privileged to be so busy musically this year. I've been exposed to this whole music scene which I never even knew even existed. I've been doing many school productions at DHS and at Jack Rabbits Morning side. My highlight of the year was winning the Splashy Fen Open Mic which opened up many opportunities for me. Recently I was lucky enough to play at the Blues Summit at the Durban International Blues Festival with really amazing musicians such as John Ellis!
I play guitar and bass but guitar is definitely my favorite because of the different versatile sounds it has.
I spend a lot of time writing, watching TV and sleeping. I'm quite content with that lifestyle. However I love spending time with my friends and watching concerts! Where were you born? I was born and raised right here in Durban Who is your fave musician? My favorite musician by far is John Mayer. He is just so brilliant in his originality and arrangements and musicality. His Blues Trio is absolute brilliance and I aspire to be even half the musician he is. The chance to meet him let alone play with him would be unreal. What are the upcoming events that you would like our readers to read about? I haven't planned anything for these next few months due to my exams I will be posting on Soundcloud though: Rorke Hunter Kemp Do you have any other passion besides music? I'm a passionate reader but that's about it. Haha. What type of music do you play, what’s your genre, your style? I love delving into many genres of music but most of all I love blues and rock. It's just so real and where it all started for me. I'm starting to love acoustic music lately though.
I do write my own music, I released an EP which I recorded with my band (Southern Blue) and I have many new songs which I will be practicing with them soon and hopefully we can get into the studio and make them come alive. Is there any band members we should know about? My band at the moment consists of my schoolmates Tharan Pillay and Wesley Anderson. Thank you so much for having this awesome little chat with the Durban crew, and we will be sure to keep following you around. Many thanks and all the best Thank you so much

Hi, guys thanx for doing this interview, let’s get to know the band a bit better. Who are the members of the band and what instruments do they play? Mark Ivey: Drums Robyn Ferguson: Lead vocals and guitar Marinus Terblanche: Bass and backing vocals Leon van Rensburg: Guitar and backing vocals
What type of band would you call yourself? We are a female fronted Christian Extreme Hybrid Metal band from Pretoria, SA
Tell us the brief history of your band? And where it all started? AiA has been gigging since early 2010 and we have had some awesome opportunities to share the stage with some of South Africa's best and biggest local metal bands as well as the international act, Becoming the Archetype (USA) on their SA tour in 2010. We have faced incredible challenges throughout the few years that we have been together ranging from; 6 member changes, death, sickness and persecution, to all the difficulties involved in launching a self-funded debut album, but all in all we have pushed through it and are now stronger than ever. We have been blessed with numerous shows, airplay locally and internationally, interviews, tours, international merchandise
Who are some of your musical influences and bands that started this desire to play music? We are influenced by bands such as Becoming the Archetype, Fearscape, Antestor, Paramecium, Woe of Tyrants, Impending Doom, Synnove, Sympathy, War Of ages, Miseration, Tourniquet, Mortification, Living Sacrifice, Frost like Ashes, A Hill To Die Upon and EXTOL, all being Christian bands within the Metal Genre
Who writes your songs, and the meaning behind them? Our music is technical and it is definitely a team effort with Mark writing most of the lyrics and pounding the percussion, Robyn composing most of the music while shredding and laying down the vocals, Marinus ruling the bottom-end and Leon creating harmonies unheard of, we build it, each one adding his or her own flavour. Our songs are all based on our faith and tell the stories of Christ, our falls and troubles, blessings and triumphs and His ultimate glory and our victory through Him.
Who and how did the name come about, I'm sure it sounds like a scripture? Mark came up with name "Adorned in Ash" that is based on a scripture from Isaiah 61.
What advice would you give to fellow bands? You have the opportunity to say something, so make it something important. Be professional, humble, willing and despite the hard times, work together and stay at it.
What are some of your pet peeves? Posers, posers and more posers How can our readers get hold of you? We are available just about everywhere... What's new in the recording of your music, and how long did it take u to get there? Well, after more than 2 years, we are finally pending the well awaited release of our debut album "The Dead Walk among Us. The 10 track album recording has been completed, Robyn has finished the mixing and mastering and our photo shoot has been done. We are now busy with the layout and with all the admin, promotion and touring arrangements involved for a release in the first quarter of 2014.
I'm sure there is always obstacles in being in a band, what are some of the things you have had to deal with? Lack of support from local fans, finances, venues, sound engineers, and commitment. Thank you to Mark, Robyn, Marinus and Leon for giving us at Fanbase an opportunity to have this lovely chat with the band, Adonerd in ash. Thank you Fanbase

ONE NIGHT IN BOSTON PUB Review by : Tania Meyer & Michelle vd Walt
We were invited by our new found favourite metal bands Dark Matter and Nerve Zero to accompany them though their local hang out BOSTONS. The line-up was as follows: Adorned in ash Nerve zero Avenging anarchy Dark matter Demogoroth satanum Tania and I made a trip down to Johannesburg on the bus to make this a trip to remember. As we entered Boston on a windy Saturday night we entered the venue and were greeted with big smiles when we announced that the Durban Fanbase team has arrived. Let me just give you a little run down on the look of the place. You walk into a pool area surrounded with red and black dÊcor. As you look up you see the stage, and who would we see there upon the stage no other than Nerve Zero. Man these guys are making a noise and the crowd loves it. Next we walk to the bar area with the walls all kitted out with all kinds of LP records. We were entertained for at least an hour, reading about all the bands. As we get together with lead singer, Jacque of Dark Matter, we had a little chat about their up and coming events and boy o boy do these guys sound very busy. Even a little charity show is in the pipe line. I also spoke to Tony the Tin Man and he informed us of great things still to come. So Nerve Zero took the stage and rocked our socks off. Next up was a Rustenburg band that I really liked, after that our famous Dark Matter took to the stage followed by our, in this month’s issue, Adorned in ash. We met lead singer and guitarist Robin and had a little chat about the future. Durban crew Tania Meyer is arranging a Heaven vs Hell evening at the Winston Pub in Durban with 3 Johannesburg metal bands battling it out with 3 Durban rock bands. I do believe this could be a very interesting event. You will have to read the details about the event in the Durban section.

WE ARE ONE South Africa’s first colour festival creates “colour festival phenomenon”
In March and April this year tens of thousands of colour-crazy revelers covered Cape Town and Johannesburg in a kaleidoscope of green, orange, pink, yellow and blue at the original WE ARE ONE Colour Festivals. When it launched, WE ARE ONE was the first electronic dance music (EDM) event based on a colour powder festival concept to launch in South Africa. As the first festival of its kind in the country, WE ARE ONE attracted sell-out crowds in Cape Town and Johannesburg. It also set in motion a “colour festival phenomenon” that has seen several ‘copycat’ versions of the original WE ARE ONE colour festival crop up in cities around the country as promoters jump on the colour powder bandwagon after seeing the success WE ARE ONE generated. The public has taken notice of this as questions are asked online and in social media about why there are so many different colour festivals that seem so similar. As the company responsible for putting on WE ARE ONE, award-winning Seed Experiences wants to set the record straight. “We don't claim to be the first colour festival ever and the concept of a non-religious colour festival is no longer new and many are held around the world. But to be sure WE ARE ONE is South Africa's First Colour Festival of its kind and, as Seed Experiences, we remain committed to throwing successful colour festivals that are about music and people having a great time in the spirit of togetherness,” says Brian Little, Managing Director of Seed Experiences. Despite other versions of the first WE ARE ONE Colour Festival popping up, Seed Experiences is confident that both existing fans and new colour-party revelers will support the country’s first EDM colour festival. “Like all of Seed Experiences events WE ARE ONE set the standards in South Africa. People who attend WE ARE ONE know they are part of the first festival in the country and they know they can expect a world-class event, the best line-up, and an overall amazing experience. This is clear from our sell-out events in March and April,” adds Brian. Seed Experiences will be announcing the new venues and dates for the summer WE ARE ONE Colour Festivals very soon. The official announcements will be made on the Facebook pages and to media in the coming days. If it doesn’t say WE ARE ONE, it’s not South Africa’s First Colour Festival music and party event!

Interview by: Duwyne Clayton
Skuff Mullet interview Hey guys thank you for doing this interview with us, let’s start from the beginning what is the history of Skuff Mullet? It started in about 2004 with some mates jamming old punk and alternate covers and progressed to taking our own slant on punk/hard rock/hardcore. Basically just playing some crazy tunes that we like and nobody else seems to be doing.
What genre of music do you classify yourselves in band? Punk with a twist of lemon and a dash of tabasco. What can you tell us about each member of the band? Skuff –Vox/Guitar Mooch – Bass/Guitar Jared – Vox/Bass Billy - Drums Did you all come from a musical background? Billy (drums) came out of his Mother’s womb with a set of drumsticks and has been playing ever since. The other guys have been involved in various bands (Sharkbrother, Gainsford, New clouded Yellow, Conclave, Hindenburg etc) until it all fell into place with the Mullet. Who is the song writer in the band and where do you get your inspiration from, what do you generally write about? Skuff writes most of the lyrics and tunes but all the guys contribute their bits – sometimes a song will grow from one riff when the whole band just jams together. The inspiration comes from life experiences, alcohol, jolling, fantasies and just jamming what sounds wicked.
Can you explain the process of putting a song together, from the time the riffs, lyrics, drums etc are all put together and a song becomes a complete song? For us songs always come together differently. Sometimes the lyrics get written first when we have something we wanna say and then we’ll kick around music ideas to fit the lyrics. Other songs, a piece of the music will come first like a riff, baseline or a beat and then it just grows from there. On the odd occasion a whole song will pop out of thin air when we jam – if that happens we record the idea in the jam room and then flesh it out if it needs it. Do you have an album or anything in the pipe line? We do all our recording and mixing in house so we are constantly working on something – we normally put out 2-3 songs every couple of months on our Facebook page and on reverb nation. We also have an EP on band camp (under the we did this record label) and media fire called Audio Anarchy. It’s a free download so help yourselves.
Who is some of the bands influences? Musically –Blood for Blood, L7,Anti flag,The cure,Static Thought,Ministry,Sex Pistols,Stiff Little Fingers,The Exploited,Pennywise,Metallica,Queens of the Stone Age.. – the list goes on and on. Lyrical content wise-crooked politicians, life and death, sh*t on YouTube/TV, war …. the list goes on and on. If we have never been to one of your gigs, what can we expect if we were to attend a Skuff Mullet gig?
How can people get hold of you, do you have any social network links? Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/SkuffMullet/174386019253901 Reverbnation : http://www.reverbnation.com/skuffmullet Thank you so much for doing this interview, do you have any last words for your fans and the readers? Live for today cause tomorrow you’re gone.
Some bad*ss noise pumped out hard and loud with a lot of energy. Nobody does it quite like we do – we have our own special brand of crazy. Skuff Mullet is quite an interesting band name, how did that band name come about? Skuff is a nickname I’ve had forever I can’t remember how it came about but the oxford definition is: A mark made by scraping or grazing a surface or object. Mullets are just cool and they have it all – business up front and party time behind. Put the 2 together and you have something that sounds like a Norwegian fish dish.

Biffy Clyro (Scotland) Biffy Clyro is a Scottish rock band that formed in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, comprising of Simon Neil (guitar, lead vocals), James Johnston (bass, vocals) and Ben Johnston (drums, vocals). Currently signed to 14th Floor Records, they have released six studio albums, three of which, Puzzle, Only Revolutions and Opposites reached the top five in the UK Albums Chart. They also claimed their first number one album in the UK Albums Chart with their sixth studio album, Opposites. After their first three albums, the band expanded their following significantly with the release of their fourth, Puzzle, in 2007. Puzzle peaked at number 2 on the official UK album charts and went platinum in the UK in 2012, selling over 300 000 copies. Biffy Clyro`s popularity was built upon further in 2008 and 2009 with the release of the singles “Mountains” and ‘That Golden Rule”, which both reached the Top 10 of the UK Singles Chart. In 2011 the band was nominated for the Brit Awards for Best British Group. Killswitch Engage (USA) Killswitch Engage is an American metalcore band from Westfield, Massachusetts, formed in 1999. Killswitch Engage's current line-up consists of vocalist Jesse Leach, bassist Mike D'Antonio, guitarists Joel Stroetzel and Adam Dutkiewicz, and drummer Justin Foley. KSE burst onto the scene with the genre-defining Alive or Just Breathing, notching a Grammy nomination in 2005 for the title track from 2004's gold-certified The End of Heartache and following up that landmark album with the Gold-selling As Daylight Dies and an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live along with gracing the covers of countless metal and rock magazines around
the world. The band has sold over four million records in the US. Their music mixes "crushing" riffs, double bass drum patterns, power chords, dual-guitar harmonies, often punctuated with pinch harmonic squeals in their music and breakdowns that one can expect from the metalcore genre. Their music is influenced by gothenburg metal scene and thrash metal.
The band has released six studio albums and one DVD up to date. Killswitch Engage has played at many live arenas, including Wacken Open Air, Rock Am Ring, Download Festival, and the Revolver Golden Gods Awards. Their latest album, Disarm the Descent was released on April 2, 2013 In 2009, MTV, while naming "The Greatest Metal Bands of All Time" referred to Killswitch Engage as "one of the founders of metalcore". Jason D. Taylor of Allmusic said Alive or Just Breathing (2002) “is a pure metal album that seemingly has ignored any fashionable trend and instead relies solely on skill and expertise to sculpt some of the meatiest heavy metal since the glory days of Metallica and Slayer." Camo and Krooked (Austria) featuring Dynamite MC (UK) Camo and Krooked Austrian duo Reinhard Rietsch and Markus Wagner, otherwise known as Camo & Krooked have quickly become one of the hottest production outfits in Europe. Working together since 2007 and signing exclusively to Hospital Records in 2010, the Viennese pair have created a whirl of dancefloor anthems and a fearsome reputation for their untouchable production skills. In autumn 2011 they released their first album on Hospital “Cross The Line”; a fourteen-track rollercoaster ride of emotions, veering between polished vocal-led beauties to filthy tear-out monsters, which delved into dubstep, drumstep, electro-house and everything in between. The album was a universal success and the duo won three awards in the Drum & Bass Arena Awards 2011 for “Best Producer”, “Best Video” and “Best Album”. 2012 saw the release of their remix album “Between The Lines” which featured remixes of key “Cross The Line” cuts by a range of producers including Metrik, Mefjus, Subwave, BCee and more. Since then, the boys have also had their music featured on some high profile computer games and have released ‘All Night’, the first single off their second album “Zeitgeist”, due for release in September 2013. With Eighteen months of hard graft under the belt, ‘All Night’ foresees the new album in its influences from French house, disco and minimal techno that creates yet another angle to the Camo & Krooked signature sound. Dynamite MC He started his MCing career on pirate radio station Krush FM, broadcasting in Gloucester, South West England during the early 1990s. After meeting the now legendary Roni Size in 1994 and MCing for the Full Cycle crew, the Bristol collective formed the live band Reprazent where Dynamite shared vocal duties with singer, Onallee. Their debut album New Forms won the Mercury Music Prize in 1997, and Dynamite's role was enhanced for Reprazent's second album, the hip-hop influenced In The Mode (2000). He released a solo album, The World of Dynamite, and the mixtape CD Big Man Talk was released on the Strong Records label (featuring samples from Enya and Kanye West). Further proving his versatility as an artist, the track Bounce (produced by Switch, now one half of Major Lazor) is not only featured on the soundtrack of Madden NFL '07, but also in the video game Need for Speed: Carbon, along with After Party. Warning also makes an appearance on the Xbox console’s Crackdown 2. After this run of production success, Dynamite took time out to host two national radio shows in the UK, interviewing artists such as P Diddy, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Redman, Shaggy, Pussy Cat Dolls, Ja Rule, Estelle, Chipmunk and many more Twitter: http://twitter.com/DynamiteMc Website: http://www.dynamitemc.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/dynamiteuk
Gerald Clarke: FASt Forward Foundation Launch
On the 9th day of the 9th month at 9 minutes and 9 seconds passed 9AM the dining area of Beyer’s Kloof Wine Farm came alive with the clamouring sound of whistles and bells in support of Foetal Alcohol Syndrome awareness. When I had arrived at the entrance there was a tea table with muffins, scones, coffee and of course tea, to which we were welcome to help ourselves. I silently rejoiced. This was going to be a classy event. And so it was! Inside, the place was full of tables packed with people. There was a stage with acoustic guitars and a piano and RSG radio station was setup to broadcast the whole event live on-air. The Cause: The number “9” gains its significance from the nine months of pregnancy in which time the expectant mother must abstain from alcohol. At each seat there was a neatly set out plate with an information pamphlet on the Beyers Truter FAITH (Foetal Alcohol-Syndrome & Interrelated Treatment Help) Fund and a FASD knot pin. The FAITH Fund was started by Beyers Truter, a renowned South African winemaker, to help raise awareness and educate people not only in towns but in rural areas as well about the dangers of Foetal Alcohol Syndrome. They do this by personally going door to door, speaking to people personally and hosting information sessions at farms, schools and churches. A child born with the syndrome can have varying physical and mental issues. Symptoms include stunted growth, damage to organs (usually the brain, heart, eyes and ears), abnormal formation of the face, brain damage and low IQ. The damage is permanent, but very preventable.
This event also marked the launch of the FASt Forward Fund. This foundation helps FAS sufferers by having them interact with horses. This has shown to help immensely with development in physical and cognitive challenges. The FASt Forward Fund is an initiative set in motion by singer songwriter Gerald Clark and retailer Jade & Velvet. The riding can help physically with balance, posture, flexibility and muscle tone, whereas cognitively it helps improve memory retention, reasoning skills and improves attention span. Find out more @ https://www.facebook.com/pages/FASt-Forward-Fund/577692388957207 The Music: Gerald Clarke along with Luna Paige played music in between the interviews and talks. They were spectacular! The two smooth voices worked beautifully together as well as on their own as they did their solo parts. Gerald’s strong male vocals and Luna’s clear feminine voice created an atmosphere not only at Beyers Kloof wine farm, but across the country on live radio. These two artists complement each other exceptionally well, be it with their voices, piano or guitar. Gerald’s long hair became the topic of conversation more than once during the two hour event and this is when I realized I was probably the youngest person at the function by quite a substantial amount of years. Never-the-less I enjoyed the performance just as much as the rest of the aunties and uncles there. Mr. Clarke’s wild hair could be seen as a testament to his upbringing as a farm boy where he grew up amongst nature and horses. A few of their own pieces were performed, mostly composed by Gerald Clarke but also one or two cover songs. Highlights for me were Gerald Clarke’s Afrikaans song “Elandsbaai” and “Black Horses” as well as their closing cover song: Johnny Cash’s “Jackson”.
Tuesday, 17 September was a wet night in Stellenbosch. It had rained and was still raining when I arrived at Aandklas. The wet weather didn’t do much to deter the fans though, as inside there were loads of students and ex-students who had come to experience the Afrikanercore Deathpop legend that is Straatligkinders. Aandklas had recently had some additions made to the interior and Jack Daniel’s had supplied some very cool decor as well as a whole exhibition of their classy range behind the bar... Advertising worked its magic and I soon found myself with a glass of Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel on the rocks in my hand. The noise died down and the opening act, Sondagskoolhelde, took to the stage with their alternative heavy energized ballads. The look of the band is something undetermined with each member having his own style, ranging from hardcore in black to barefoot hippie on bass. Quinton (the frontman) may not have been 100% on vocals this night but his performance made up for it as he jumped and climbed all over the stage, engaging with the growing audience after every song. The band kept the crowd involved, dishing out Monster Energy drinks and Jagermeister while the lead guitarist fully utilised his wireless system jumping off stage and playing between the spectators. By the time they’d wrapped up their set the people were swarming to get a decent spot to see the famous Straatligkinders hit them fully in the face with their Emokaans music. Straatligkinders started in 2006 and since then they have gained immense support across the country, drawing people with their authentically catchy and original core music, not only in the Afrikaans community, but with all sorts of South Africans. They have bragging rights to various accolades including four MK awards and being signed with EMI Music South Africa. The Straatligkinders break loose with heavy guitars, breakdowns and catchy dance tunes. The people love them and a decent sized moshpit is promptly formed. Guys and girls alike scream marriage proposals at Bouwer the frontman who graciously accepts them with a grin before introducing the next song (one of their older tracks) to which everyone sings and dances along to. It’s worth noting that their live performance has definitely evolved since I last saw them play an U/18 gig at the town hall in Strand about 5 years ago. It’s somewhat turned into more of a dance show and not just a musical performance... Or maybe it was the Turbovite energy sachets which they were throwing at our outstretched hands that made us bounce around to the brilliant sound done by Patriot Productions.
Bouwer’s vocals were excellent with sharp screams and strong choruses. Next to him Hein shared his bass with a fan and fist-bumped him after the front row man-groupie had finished whacking his strings. As was expected, these okes broke the place down (in a very professional manner) and their permanent smiles gave testament to the fact that they were enjoying the show as much as us. Highlights: Awesome crowd, band and Straatligkinders’ cover of Kurt Darren’s “Kaptein”. Lowlight: Turbovite juice everywhere ;) Overall: These guys just keep getting better. Checkout their current album “KONINGS MET VERSKONINGS” Straatligkinders are: Bouwer Bosch – Vocals, Guitar and snor Hein Kruger – Bass and tongue Ruan Kruger – Drums and smiles Bennie de Jager – Guitar and afro

There might have been a constant drizzle Thursday night as I hurriedly drove through to town to do my music review but there were no damp spirits as a cue of people eagerly formed inside Assembly awaiting the arrival of the bands! If the three local bands (Deity’s Muse, Mark Haze and The Narrow) weren’t enough, Dead Letter Circus from Australia would be the penultimate attraction of the evening. The dance floor wasn’t empty for long as Deity’s Muse, “a groove-driven, hard-rock power trio” from Jozi, hit the stage. While not lyrically gripping it’s hard not to notice this bands unique use of almost off-beat rhythm – syncopation - I’m told, held together, I believe, mainly by their outstanding drummer, Sashan Pillay. I was still trying to unravel this complex set of un-beats as Mark Haze, affectionately described by some as our local Bon Jovi from Bellville, began to strut his stuff. A rather stark contrast, yes, with their awesomely catchy lyrics and colourful stage presence (blue pants and all) but this is the band that really got the party started. The Narrow, ironically, the most widely anticipated and well-known of the three local bands was up next. While their style has certainly changed over the years from hard and heavy to something a little more commercially palatable, they haven’t lost their vigorous energy on stage and rock and roll roots. Fans were kept entertained on the dance floor and head banging away with a compilation of both old and new songs, but of course no show would be complete without “Lonely, lonely”, which, as always, had everybody singing along. As epic as our local bands are, the moment everybody had really been waiting for had finally arrived, as Dead Letter Circus, stole the show. Lead singer, Kim Benzie has the kind of voice that really needs to be heard rather than described. They have, however, been described as having an overall style similar to that of Muse, with whom they have previously toured. What made their performance truly memorable wasn’t only that this was their first show in South Africa but also the way in which they continuously made an effort to connect with the audience. Thanks to Turning Tricks Entertainment for an awesome show! Whoever said there was nothing to do on a Thursday night clearly was not at this show.

20 September 2013 Venue Vogue Nightclub Durban Time 9pm till 4am Event DJ Competition 2013 Vogue night club has 3 bars, 2 dance floors and one smokers lounge. Very tight security and very strict about age. The competition was initiated online on Facebook, DJs had to submit for entry, 40 upcoming DJs were chosen for the competition. There was a mix of house, rave, kwatio, hip hop and dance displayed amongst the DJs. There were DJs of various backgrounds and ethnicity. The requirement for the DJs was to sell 10 tickets at a cost of R50 each in order to be allowed to play at the venue. However I did not see how this was accomplished as the event was rather quiet. A lot of participants did not show up for the competition therefore the club had their local DJ, DJ Cassey play between sets. The competition was fierce and the DJs were fighting for their chance to shine. A few had to be removed from the list simply due to technical malfunctions of their equipment. Each DJ was given 5 minutes to set up, if not set up in 5 minutes then too bad you don’t play. There were 4 judges, the competition was held between 2 dance floors, 2 judges upstairs 2 judges downstairs. I took a personal interest in this competition as a friend of mine whom is extremely talented was part of the competition, DJ K-Otic Nate. My friend was allowed to play 2 sets and played extremely well, people were actually dancing! I was rather disappointed with the outcome of the crowd as well as the outcome of the competition. There were many talented DJs in this competition and I congratulate you all for giving it all you had! The competition was meant for DJs who were unknown, however the 20 that were chosen for the second stage of the comp in Cape Town were all acknowledged DJs. Please check out DJ K -Otic Nate’s link of his performance and decide for yourself how talented he is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDzgJDXfd4o. The concept of the competition was great however not well organized or executed. To see the DJs through to the finals check out the Facebook page.

Live in South Africa 1 February 2014, Gallagher Estate, Johannesburg. Presented by Axe in association with Channel O. Hip-hop megastar, Big Sean, makes his first South African stage appearance on 1 February next year, brought to you by Axe, and in association with Channel O. This exclusive and once-off event will take place at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg on Saturday 1 February 2014. A tremendous feat for Axe, it is guaranteed to be a phenomenal gathering of hip-hop fans from across South Africa to witness the spectacle that is Big Sean. AXE is exceptionally proud to be bringing in Big Sean as part of their debut foray into the music and lifestyle scene. “Music is an integral part of an AXE Man’s life, and through bringing out international artists, starting with Big Sean, we have the opportunity to create some once-in-a-lifetime experiences for our users” said AXE Brand Manager Vincent Viviers. Big Sean’s first visit to SA and Africa follows hot on the heels of the star’s second studio album, Hall of Fame, selling an impressive 72 000 copies in its first week of release in August. The artist’s career has exploded in the two years since his debut album, Finally Famous: The Mixtape, in 2011. After record first-week sales and raving reviews inRolling Stone and just about everywhere else, it also spun off crossover hits with, among others, West and Roscoe Dash, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj. GQ Mag’s ‘Hottest Rookie’ of 2012 now has a Facebook following pushing 3 million, close to 4 million twitter followers and no less than 46 million YouTube views worldwide. The MC from Detroit, Michigan, has come a long way since free styling for Kanye West in 2005. It was here that he made a lifetime contact in West who agreed to hear his freestyle. Following a mentorship from West, Sean signed with G.O.O.D. Music in 2007, and Def Jam in 2008. Most recent accolades are double Grammy nominations for Mercy, his collaboration with West, his mentor, and which also featured label mate Pusha T and 2 Chainz. CITO's "EL CANTANTE" returns to Bellgables due to popular demand Friday, 11 October 2013
Cito and Martin Rocka will be returning to Bellgables Country Restaurant for another special EL CANTANTE performance on Friday 11th October 2013, due to incredible demand after their first two performances in August sold out instantly at this exquisite award-winning restaurant. Renowned singer Cito (from WONDERboom fame) presents his popular programme of Spanish favourites, EL CANTANTE, with Guitarist extraordinaire, Martin Rocka joining him on guitar.
Says Cito; “I am extremely overwhelmed by the amazing response we’ve had with El Cantante at the beautiful Bellgables! With the first two nights selling out so quickly, I certainly felt that expectations were high. Thankfully, the experience exceeded MY expectations and El Cantante at Bellgables has to be the best intimate performance I’ve ever enjoyed. The fantastic setting, the glorious food, the highly responsive crowd; unforgettable! Can’t wait to do it again!” WIth “El Cantante” (the singer), Cito heads back to his Puerto Rican roots, performing his unique acoustic versions of the Spanish classics that he grew up listening to.
The rhythms and styles of bolero, tango, mambo, tejano, mariachi and traditional folklorica are included in the musical line-up, highlighting traditional favourites from countries including Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and others. Pop favourites presented in Cito’s unique arrangements include Cielito Lindo, La Bamba, Besame Mucho, Carnaval, Cancion del Mariachi, En Mi Viejo San Juan, El Cuarto de Tula, Mi Tierra (Gloria Estefan) and Sobrevivire (I Will Survive).
Cito was born in Los Angeles, California and most of his childhood was spent in an Hispanic community in Queens, New York City. Both parents influenced Cito with their musical abilities - especially his Puerto Rican mother who sang and played Spanish guitar. Now living in South Africa since his teens, CITO is best known as the frontman of the legendary multi award-winning rock band, WONDERboom; currently celebrating their 17th year on the local music scene. Showcasing his diversity in recent years, Cito has had media and audiences alike raving at his heart-stopping portrayal of Jesus in the hit musical Jesus Christ Superstar; Chess - The Musical and more recently singing Queen's music in Bovim Ballet's Queen at the Ballet. Performing alongside Cito in El Cantante is 12-time SAMA nominee MARTIN ROCKA - founding member, alongside Cito, of WONDERboom, and has notched up many other accolades including most recently being the MD of the 2012 SAMA Awards as well as Idols SA Season 8. One of Martin's favourite sayings is "You make music with people, the notes come later" and its on this basis that he's thrilled to be partnering with long-time friend and fellow musician to explore an on-going desire of his to go out of his comfort zone to perform music hispanically. And with Cito also on guitar, the patrons will be provided an evening of pure delight, seeing these two seasoned performers in this intimate setting.
Says Chef Patron and owner of Bellgables Country Restaurant, Errol Gobey; “I am not surprised with the turnout we had for El Cantante in August!! Sold OUT two nights running and a third booked for the 11th October… The performances by Cito and Martin were sensational and the compliments overall of the entire experience at Bellgables were overwhelming !!! We look forward to our next knock out show…."

The Flying Pickets SPEND AN EARLY CHRISTMAS WITH THE FLYING PICKETS EVENT Christmas with the Flying Pickets DATE Wednesday 20 November 2013 VENUE GrandWest Grand Arena TIME 20h00 TICKETS R295 to R495 BOOKING Computicket The British pop-rock a capella vocal group, The Flying Pickets, will tour South Africa to perform theirChristmas with The Flying Pickets show at GrandWest’s Grand Arena on Wednesday, 20 November 2013. The group first enjoyed worldwide success with their debut single, a cover of a Yazoo songOnly You in 1983. The single went straight to number one in the UK, and soon found popularity in other countries. This early success led the band to produce no less than 14 albums over the years. The Flying Pickets was founded by Brian Hibbard in 1982, together with a group of actors all with strong socialist political convictions. They put together a musical theatre production that told the story of the 1982 miners strike in the UK, and their unusual name refers to mobile strikers of the time who would travel to join pickets in sympathy with the strikers. The group so enjoyed singing that they began to appear in pubs and clubs in London where they found success not only for their vocal ability, but also for their flamboyant appearance. Since those early days they have continued performing, recording and touring around the world. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are available from Computicket from R295 to R495.
