I

would like to start off this note by telling you what has been going on in the Fanbase camp this past

month. As we were getting this issue ready and looking for what bands and articles to feature. I was informed by three Fanbase members that they will need to take time off this month, due to exams and bad internet connections that need to be sorted out amongst other every day real life problems they had to attend to. I thought to myself that’s okay we will get by and try our hardest to still put together a kick ass issue. Anyway as the month went on I tried my hardest to find sufficient content for the magazine, but much to my surprise and without me even saying something to anyone, the team members who asked for time off both emailed me with content that they would like to contribute to the mag and went out of their way to make this issue another success. Now that is what I call dedication to the mag. So I would like to take this time out and thank Ryno de Lange (Full metal panic section) , Chantell van der Walt and Tania Meyer (Durban Vibes section)for being so dedicated despite coping with their daily problems. I would also like to extend this to the rest of the team as well – thanks for your dedication and loyalty to making the mag a success.

Editors Note

After being in Idols we speak to him to find out how he has managed to be on top of his game in the music industry. While listening to Zone Radio the other day I heard an interview with a musician who goes by the name of Brett Newski. I really liked his sound so decided to get hold of him and do a feature in the mag. Go check him out and look him up on his social Medias. You won’t be disappointed. Finally, last but not least we feature two bands that I’m very excited about, the first one is a band called Sitarah, made up of ex members of the band Gritt, this unique band has a great sound. IVORY

Ivory is a band that I am actually very excited about unleashing to you all. Music that is mixed between grunge, blues and rock, this outfit is set to take the music industry by storm. One of the hardest working band I have come across it is hard to believe this band has only been together for just over the year. With countless gigs and a self-titled EP under their belt, this band is going places.

Hi there guys thank you for featuring in Fanbase Muic Magazine, let’s get started, where did it all begin for Ivory? Who is in the band, can you tell us something about each member of the band and what they do? People in the band: We have on Lead guitar, the long haired, riff smashing, daughter snatching, solo crunching; Josh Berry. On Rhythm and vocals, the note hitting, instrument smashing, re-incarnation of Kurt Cobain; Jono Valentine On Drums, the bearded, half-man half-machine, drumstick throwing, grizzly bear; Johnny Savage On Bass, you better lock up your sons because we have the feisty and fiery; Zanna Berry in our arsenal What kind of genre, would describe your music? Our music would most accurately be described as a mix between Grunge, Blues and Rock. We have a very distinctive sound that cannot easily be placed into a generic genre category. We pride ourselves on original sound, giving people a different taste to what they usually hear. If we have never seen Ivory play live before, what can we expect from one of your gigs? If you have never seen IVORY perform live before, you can expect a high-energy knock out of a performance that will leave you pumped feeling like you want to take over the world. If you could come to our shows prepared with two things, it would be a helmet and a spare pair of panties. Who is the song writer in the band, and where do you find your inspiration from? We ALL write the songs in the band. We get our inspiration from life that surrounds us. In our songs we want to break the conventional norms of Rock n Roll and take the listener on a journey with us through the energy of the universe. A big part of our inspiration comes from the fact that we feel that people have forgotten the amazing power of Rock n Roll, and through our songs, we aim to change the perceptions and misconceptions that a large majority of people believe about the music industry, and what it means to be a true musician making true music.

“we all write the songs in band”

What is the process like of putting an Ivory track together, how do you put the riffs, drums, bass and lyrics and complete a song? The song writing process in the band is a very interesting and deep process. Jono Valentine brings the seed of what will be a great song to our writing sessions. It starts off as a simmering a preculture, undeveloped and meaningless, jamboree band type stuff which is musically terrible but lyrically very good. It starts boiling then we mix up the lyrical depth of the pre-culture and adapt new musical ideas that express its meaning more aptly and combine it with new forms of old ideas, and that is where Josh, Zanna and Johnny Savage take over. They contain the power that allows them to give birth to the plant that inevitably grows from the seed. The seed trusts us, and grows into what ends up being an incredible song that contains a piece of the four of us. We cut out the bullshit and do not conform to what the pop masses would think is 'good'. Our music is our souls and our hearts. We are vulnerable and naked, and are open for anyone who would like to feed off of our musical energy. A lot of our lyrical inspiration comes from the vandalism found on public restrooms.

Okay lets talks about the EP, what is it called and how many tracks are on it? Our Debut EP is self-titled and it has 7 Tracks on it. The reason we opted for seven songs, is because we feel that all seven songs are a great opening testimony as to who we are. We are IVORY, and we are not going anywhere. It also has to do with the fact that we have SO much material. We just want share our music with the world! Where was the EP recorded? The EP was recorded in a little recording studio that we have on Josh and Zanna Berry's property. We played gig after gig in order to earn enough startup capital to buy decent sound equipment. We have been together for just over one year, and have worked incredibly hard in order to put out this EP. We are on a mission to get it publicized as much as possible, because we want the world to know that we have something to say! We are fighting the musical war, armed with nothing but love, soul and our instruments.

“There will definitely be a full length album out in the near future

Where can people get hold of your EP? People can get hold of our EP on Soundcloud. We have made it super easily accessible, and everything is free and downloadable. For now, money is not a priority. We love doing what we do and we have a message to spread, which is that Rock and Roll is not dead. It is alive and kicking, making love and giving birth to tons of amazing bands that the planet needs to hear. Do you think there will be a full length album out in the future? There will definitely be a full length album out in the future. However, this is the catch. We do not necessarily want to sign with a record label. Plain and simply we are looking for an investor who has a good knowledge of the music industry and how to get a band to the top. We are looking for someone who would invest money in us so that we could go into a good studio and get a very good sounding record out. We are very weary of record labels because we do not want to get stuck in a contract that hinders and constricts our creativity and our true souls. Right now are the beginning stages of IVORY. We still do not know how to get the 'big gigs' and slots on festivals, hence why it would be nice to have a 'mentor' who knows what he is doing, but we will figure it out, it's inevitable. Thanks so much for doing this interview. Where can people catch you gigging in November and do you have any social networks we can get hold of you? Thank you very much Fanbase Magazine and Duwyne Clayton for doing this interview with IVORY, we appreciate the support! Most importantly, THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING LOCAL MUSIC!!!!! Right now, in November we will be playing our 'biggest' show yet in terms of public perception of the venue, at Mercury Live with Smugg Juggler and Black Stone Radio, on November 16th. People can check us out on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ youshouldtellyourfriends as well as our soundcloud account on: https://soundcloud.com/ivoryza/sets/ivory-ep

Brett Newski

Interview by: Duwyne Clayton

I first heard of Brett Newski on Zone Radio a while back and was blown away by his music, I was also blown away at what a nice guy he was, I just had to get in contact with him and feature him in Fanbase Music Magazine. Check out this interview and enjoy the read. Ladies and gentleman I give to you Brett Newski

Hi Brett thanks you for featuring in Fanbase Music Magazine, do you come from a musical background? My father sells radio airtime at a classic rock radio station in Milwaukee, USA. He’s a legend, but has never touched a musical instrument. No one in my immediate family is musicians. What kind of genre of music does you music fall under? The style has been deemed folk/punk, indie folk, farm punk, and farmageddon. Most recently I ran into an Irish guy who called it “cow punk”. You were currently spending some time in South Africa and in the Zone Radio studios. Is this your first time in South Africa and what do you think of our country? South Africa is currently my favorite place to tour. People are very hungry and appreciative for live music. SA is always the light at the end of the tunnel for me. Because no matter how tough a tour in the US can be, I always have loyal fans and friends in South Africa. Being there completely lifts my morale every time. Speaking of Zone Radio, we think they’re an awesome radio station, what did you think of them and also how important is radio stations such as Zone Radio for a musicians career? Zone Radio runs a great ship. Very tight and professional with a good taste in music. One of the better more enjoyable radio sessions I’ve done on this tour. Plus they even let me try out my “over-the-top” Hollywood movie-trailer voice on air. When I listen to your music I defo hear a lot of Violent Femmes influences, am I right in saying that, what is some of your musical influences? I love bands that cut their teeth. Working bands that tour hard and stick to their guns. Bands that play live instruments and refrain from the use of loop tracks and MacBook’s on stage. Music in its human form. Raw music. Songs that sound alive and unprocessed and translate well from the studio onto the stage. Frank Turner is a recent favorite. The guy has played over 1400 shows and never stops touring. He’s currently leading the folk/ punk revival. Sometimes we all need to take our foot off the gas, but it’s hard in the music industry because there is always someone waiting to take your place. We can sleep when we’re dead :)

How do you feel being compared to other bands, does it bother you because you want to be known as your own sound, or do you get a bit of joy and satisfaction out of it? It’s important to give people a reference to what you sound like as an artist. There are 20 million bands in the world, so for a band to explain “no one else sounds like us” can be a mistake. Listeners don’t have time to go research a band and pinpoint their sound these days. I try to explain my sound in 3-4 words or one sentence to combat with the A.D.D., speed, and distractions listeners face in the modern world. If I wasn’t born with attention deficit disorder, I certainly have it now. Thanks internet! :) I’m honored to be compared to the Violent Femmes. They are a massive influence and they also happen to be from my hometown. So I feel close to that band. They are a group that overcame odds and put the niche genre of folk/punk on the international radar. They’ve landmarked the genre and achieved immense success just by sticking to their guns. If we have never seen you perform live before, what could we expect to see at a Brett Newski gig? Hard driving folk Armageddon. Usually I like to tell a few wacky stories from my time living in Vietnam. It was a serious odyssey. I also promise the show will not suck and offer a 30-day money back guarantee. ;) You seem to be a man that gets around a lot and see a lot of the world, do you have any great on the road touring stories? In the Philippines I was chased by a gang around Manilla who offered several death threats and wanted to shiv me. At this point the goal in life is to 1) Not Die and 2) Keep morale high. I have some of these stories on my blog here: http:// corruptionmusic.com/roadblog Thank you for doing this interview, how can people get hold of your music, do you have any social networks. www.brettnewski.com www.facebook.com/brettnewski @brettnewski

Gig Review

Minds

w

Simple Minds – Big Top Arena at Carnival City 1 November 2013 Gig review and photography done by Hennie Smit On 1 November 2013, I had the honor and privilege of not just attending, but also photographing, the opening show of the South African leg of the Simple Minds World Tour organized by Real Concerts, which was hosted by Carnival City at their Big Top Arena. The band consists of Jim Kerr (Lead Singer), Andy Gillespie (Keyboards/Synthesizer), Charlie Burchill (Lead Guitar), Ged Grimes (Bass Guitar) and Mel Gaynor (Drums). There was a good crowd in attendance for the concert. Although the auditorium was not packed to capacity, I would estimate that it was around 85% filled. As is standard practice, we were allowed to shoot from the photo pit for the first three songs only. The show began with Broken Glass Park, followed by Waterfront and Once Upon A Time. Before I knew it, these songs were out of the way, and our shooting time for the night was over. The band brought an amazing energy to their show with these opening songs, and it was not long before some in the audience were on their feet, singing and clapping along. Jim had his “A-game” concert personality and enticed the audience even further to join in on the act. There was massive audience participation in song like Someone Somewhere in Summertime and Don’t You (Forget About Me). The night would have been incomplete had Simple Minds not performed Mandela Day, which was well received and respected by the audience. Although there was limited security visible in the auditorium, the attendees were well-behaved while still enjoying the music and dancing and singing along. Afterwards I could see that most of the attendees enjoyed the show tremendously, as everyone left the hall one could sense the high energy levels. I can only raise one critique towards the show. This is by no means aimed at Simple Minds since it is standard practice in the music industry. This is regarding the 3-song-photo-pit-shooting rule. I was amazed at the number of fans using their smart-phones and various tablets to record the concert in either still images or video. My critique is as follows: (Professional) photographers are allowed to shoot during the three songs only. This puts a damper on the photographers’ creativity. In the times we are living in, there are more than enough bad photos of celebrities doing the rounds on the Internet. The (professional) photographer is in a position to rectify this to a certain extend. Yet, the celebrities are tying our hands behinds our backs. I have seen numerous concertgoers, boasting to the people around them that they have already posted a photo taken during the concert on their Facebook timeline. These photos were obviously taken using a smart-phone and/or tablet of some sort. By allowing the (professional) photographer more freedom during a show, in respect of extended shooting time and the ability to shoot from various locations within the venue, the celebrities will have more photos of better quality on the Internet. Being allowed to shoot from the soundboard and/ or balcony, will afford the photographer to not just focus on individual band-members, but also obtain entire stage-shots, which will include the band as a whole. In most (if not all) shows individual band-members are also introduced to the fans long after the first three-songs. This may lead to the situation where the lead singer gets all the focus and members like the drummer, and keyboard/ synthesizer player does not get much of the “limelight”. Therefore these band-members may not feature in any of the photos taken during the first three songs. Personally, I can only see advantages to the individual band-members and the band as a whole, when allowing the photographer the freedom to do what he/she is there to do. In addition, the photographer is attending the show in order to obtain photos of the band in action. By allowing the photographer shooting-time of only three song out of a possible fifteen (3/23 = ±13% of the show), the photographer is missing a potential 87% of shooting time. All the while, the concertgoers have the freedom to shoot for how long ever they want to, irrespective of the quality of images they produce and spread of the favorite bands on the Internet.

T&C DURBAN VIBES BY: Tania Meyer Chantell vd Walt

Gordon Sumner

Interview by: Chantell Van der Walt and Tania Meyer

Gordon Sumner is a very good friend of ours; we would like to thank him for joining us and giving us the opportunity to get this great interview from a legend drummer. Enjoy the interview guys Hi Gordon, thank you for doing this interview, did your Dad purposely name you after the musician Sting also known as Gordon Sumner? Thank you for having me! Nope the name is a coincidence, but I always get called Sting somewhere along the way. When we met you, you were very into the band Tool, are you still ? Yes Tool is always on my listening list, one thing I have learned from them is that music can be very diverse, and people can be really weird. Also as a drummer, I have only top level respect for Danny Carey, hands down he is the best drummer ever. You are a drummer, how many years have you been playing the drums, what are your beats per minute and what have you accomplished in this practice of yours? I've been playing for 13 years now. The last time I used a drum-o-meter I touched down on 797 single strokes in 60 seconds. I think the world record is around 1240

Can you name all the bands that you have played for and who is that one drummer you would love to take the stage with and battle it out? Years ago I was in a band called Solution, then later Penance. I am currently working on a project with an old band mate, the name is still under the decision process. A drum battle? Haha I'd love to battle it out with Mastodons Brann Dailor for sure! What drum kit do you have? I have an old faithful Tama SwingStar, Paiste cymbals, iron cobra pedals. I also have a Medeli DD508dx. electronic kit, which is great for practicing at home. What is the next level for you in terms of your drumming? The next level of drumming that comes to my mind is learning something that challenges you and then owning it. Rhythm and polyrhythm have always been a focus point for me in recent years, as opposed to simply laying a beat down, feel the pulse and heart of the music, experiment with new ideas to find the next level.

Continued on next page‌...

Gordon, what is your prospect ion on life? Life is what you make it, so I choose to keep positive and try to improve in all aspects of it. What's the best advice you can give a novice? To any beginner I would suggest daily practice with rudiments like paradiddles, played with both hands and feet. Focus on understanding good technique rather than trying to force speed, if you have good technique speed comes easier in time. Be relaxed and breathe easy, start slow and be honest with yourself about your progress. What is your genre? Hmm it’s hard to classify a genre. I'm into metal/rock, influenced by Tool, Mastodon, Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Gojira etc.. I am also influenced by drumming legends like Steve Smith, Efrain Toro and Buddy Rich.. Do you have any advice to the people out there?? My only advice to people out there would be.. ROCK ON! Oh yeah and try be nice to each other while rocking on. Thank you for doing this interview is there anything you want to add to this interview. Thanks for the opportunity, it’s been a pleasure!

Doxology

What is your favorite band you would to take the stage with? is one of the

awesome bands who played at our Heaven vs. Hell Halloween gig; we caught up with the band just before the gig to find out more about them. Enjoy the interview Hi guys thank you for featuring in Fanbase and also for playing in our Heaven VS Hell Halloween gig, are u guys ready for it? Yes, we are super excited! It's always lekker to jam at GIG's, gives us opportunity to mosh & hang out with other people!

BG - Broken Flesh, JG - Death, SB - Crimson Thorn What are the ups and downs being in a band? Brotherhood, support, improving playing skills, creativity & fellowship are some of the many good things. We don't really have so many issues. When we have a down time is like when we mess up a song at a GIG or battle with a new piece, but that's all part of the fun in being in a band, one needs some challenges as well. What is playing in your car at the moment?

Well seeing that you are a new band to Fanbase Music magazine, can you tell us a bit about the band, what are your ages, names and what instruments do you play?

BG - Becoming the Archetype,

There are 3 of us: Bernard Grobbelaar - Vocals & Guitar. 41yo, been playing guitar for almost 31 years.

SB - Becoming the Archetype

JG - Suffocation,

What genre of music do you play?

Jacques Grobbelaar - Drums. 36yo, been drumming for 16 years.

Death Metal/Technical Death Metal

Stephen Bender - Bass & Backing Vocals, 28yo, was jamming guitar for 8 years & bass for 2.5 years.

When last did you guys perform and where?

Where did this music mayhem of yours start?

At The Winston Pub in February this year, we've been working on recordings; DIY recording is a whole new challenge!

Bernard & Jacques have been jamming together in a few bands, Doxology started in 2009. There were a few members’ changes (bass). Stephen joined at the end of 2010 after having a braai with the other guys. (Braaivleis will hook any Afrikaner).

What is your motto in life? The glass is always full! (1/2 Water & 1/2 Air) . We try our best to always be positive, respect all people & make a difference where we can! Do you have any dirty little secrets you can share with us, stalkers, uncontrollable fans, groupies? No none...SECRETS are not meant to be revealed! Hehehe. Well thank you Doxology for entertaining our readers, we can’t wait to see you play at the Heaven vs Hell Halloween gig, do you have any last words to the readers We thank The Lord for giving us all we have!

Gig Review ….

HEAVEN vs HELL Continued on next page ……..

I’m going to start this review with a huge thank you to all who made this evening such a huge success. We at Fanbase Music Magazine Durban Vibes team arranged for 5 metal/dubstep/metal rock/punk blues and even a Christian metal to take our stage at The Winston Pub on this Halloween Friday night the 1st November 2013. Our evening was arranged to be a masked evening and o boy most people took to their masks as if they were real. Our own Durban organizer Tania was our Mysterious Woman of the night with me at her side as the Phantom of the Opera. We had fairy lady’s ghouls and goblins, hippies and hobos but all very exciting. The winners of the free tickets competitions we ran on Facebook went to Mr and Mrs Snjider and Michelle Snjiders was the creepy little doll from Saw and hubby Jason was none other than Jason X , you had to be there to truly experience our Heaven vs Hell evening. Durban's local death Metal band called Doxology kicked off the night with some heavy stuff, and good sound. This will also be the first metal band that I have ever seen where the drummer plays with only his pants on, no shoes and top where removed. Next up to take the stage is also a local Durban metal band called The Darkest Age, man I was even surprised at the reaction we got when they took the stage, front man Wesley had the crowd going. We have even managed to arrange an interview with Darkest Age in the band room – really looking forward to that.

After the two Durban bands had finished their sets it was now time for Adorned in Ash to take to the stage. This female fronted Christian metal band knocked the socks off of everyone not only in the pub but around the corner as well. Even when the lights went out and a amped blew out, this 4 piece Christian metal band carried on like it was their last show and they gave it horns, I’m proud to say they travelled all the way from Pretoria to play at the Winston Pub for the first time. The reaction of the crowd when Adorned in Ash female vocalist took the mic and gave them a feel for what the next 45 minutes would be like, truly unbelievable. We even had a bit of blood in the mosh pit, but they still took to the sky. They loved their new fans, mingling after the show with everyone that needed a hello or a simple message of good hope. Their makeup and dress code was very fitting to their sounds. They are one of my new favorites. They will be releasing an EP very soon so we will keep you up to date on that with more info on Band tours. I can say without a doubt that the night was ruled by Adorned in Ash. Next band, all the way from Johannesburg to make there appearance for the second time in Durban at The Winston is Dark Matter. No strangers to the set up and vibe at the Winston these boys fit right in. These guys are also one my new fave bands and I can’t wait to hear more of their sounds. Last but not least, was our young local band called Black Math. When looking at these guys setting up you will see that their drummer is a young lady, and I’m telling you the beat was rocking with this 3 piece garage rock, punk blues, alternative rock band from Hillcrest. What a mouth full. At the very end of this night Black Math was rocking the night away. With fans moshing and head banging till early hours of the morning. An Interview with this young band will also be appearing in the mag one of these fine days. I’d like to inform the readers that this is the first of many Fanbase Music Mag Events organized by The Durban Vibes Team to come. With our very own photographer in house, Caitlyn Michelle’s photography was snapping away and getting the shots of a life time with the bands. So please be sure when reading this review that the photos will follow on this night. Go check out her photography page by clicking on this link: http:// www.facebook.com/pages/Caitlyn-Michelles-Photography/377704135633099?ref=br_tf Now to finally end this review on this eventful evening of Heaven vs Hell at The Winston pub, I would just like to say thank you to all the staff at the Winston Pub, with everyone working together the night was a huge success, a huge thank you goes out to all the fans, readers and concert goers who attended this gig, its people like you that keep the Durban scene alive. A special thank you goes to all the bands that played on the night. Especially the bands who travelled from far to be at this gig. You all rock

Till the next event. Peace out

I first met Chaz Nielson, lead vocalist of Because of Betrayal at a Fanbase Music Magazine battle of the bands event a few months back, where he was the MC of the night. He seemed like a pretty nice guy. As the night went on he made a little announcement of an event his own band will be playing at in a few days’ time. This event wasn’t going to just be any old gig that his band was playing at. It was to raise funds for the one of the band’s members Dwayne Tomovic who was lying in a coma in hospital due to a tragic motorbike accident. It is with great sadness that Dwayne, after being in a coma for two months, passed away from a lung infection. But instead of that tragic incident breaking up the band, the band regrouped and it made the band even stronger, just how Dwayne would have wanted it, so after a grueling audition process to find someone to fill some pretty big shoes. The band took on Conrad Lottering to take on the guitar duties. We find out all there is to know about this head strong band and find out how life is without Dwayne. Ladies and Gentleman, I give to you Because of Betrayal.

Hi guys it’s awesome to be finally featuring you in Fanbase Music Magazine, let’s start from the beginning, where did it all start for BOB? In 2012 the band was re-united and after a grueling audition process, they recruited 2 new members. Tony van Casey replaced former guitarist Sheldon, and Jonothan Bowett was added to the line-up as the new bassist. These new members added to the Epicness of this band's unique sound and image in a way indescribable. After losing our former guitarist Dwayne, Conrad Lottering was added to the line up For those readers that don’t know you, what genre of music do you fall under? In our view as a whole metal is metal. As there are so many sub genres we feel we own a piece of all these genres built into one. So call us “Versatile Metal” if you must… Can you tell us something about each member of the current line up of BOB? Tony Casey , guitarist for B.O.B- 19 year old guitarist who hails from the Vale. Has been playing guitar for about for about 6 years after being introduced to it by his uncle he then took it upon himself to learn his own style of playing and has found it is more interesting to learn by himself. Tony finds that after joining B.O.B that Dwayne Tomovic inspired him and pushed him to greater things with a guitar. Tony draws his inspiration from bands like, All Shall Perish, Parkway Drive and As I lay Dying just to name a few. Conrad Lottering , guitarist - 22 years old. I've been playing for about 7 years now. I'm a music student and I like to play all genres. I like bands like ‘the black dahlia murder', 'job for a cowboy' and 'fleshgod apocalypse'. Conrad is a true character in his own way and always finds a way to lift our spirits and make us laugh even in the darkest moments

I’ve always considered myself as an “all-rounder”. I do many things, but do not specialize in a specific one… I’ve been living music now for 12 years and I am willing to work my whole life to becoming the best in everything I set my mind to. I would like to change the world someday, be it with music or passion, but when I’m gone, I want to be remembered and celebrated… Jonothan Bowett- Bass guitar for B.O.B- Jono is an amazing bass player who has been playing for about 4 years now and is also doing his first year at Campus of performing arts; he has grown from strength to strength and often blows us away with his bass playing abilities. As a friend away from the band he is an awesome character to be around and there is never a dull moment when he is around. Talking about BOB members, Fanbase would like to first of all offer our condolences to the band for the passing of your guitarist Dwayne Tomovic, how is life in the band without him and how have you managed to pick up the pieces and carry on? It was one of the hardest things that the band has ever gone through and had to deal with as it was not only the passing of a band member but also a great friend of many years. With this said we vowed to keep strong and push the band even harder than ever before and we have done just that. We feel that we now push the band not only for ourselves, but in Dwayne’s honor as well. He is obviously a huge part of the history of the band, how do you think he would have liked to be remembered? We believe that he would have wanted to have been remembered as a huge part of the band but we strongly feel that he would have wanted us to carry on and take the band all the way and not give up or throw in the towel. And despite all the negativity that has happened this year – we will keep playing the songs he helped us write and he will always shine through in our sound.

Byron Horn drummer for B.O.B- Byron has been playing drums for about 6 years now and thrives off Metal. He is also from Edenvale but currently lives in Kensington. Byron draws his inspiration from bands such as As I Lay Dying, All Shall Perish, White Chapel and many more. Although he has played in bands of various genres his love burns strong for Metal and the making of Metal. Chaz Nielsen – Vocals

After all is said and done and you made the decision to carry on as a band, how hard has it been to find a replacement to fill his shoes? We feel that we were blessed to have found Mr Conrad Lottering as soon as we did and it only one audition to know that he was our man and fitted the band perfectly. Not only is he an amazing guitarist but a great down to earth guy who has become a very good friend of ours as well. This question is for Conrad Lottering, how has it been joining the band after such an ordeal, it must have been hard in a way? It was very hard in the beginning joining the band. Being the new guy I felt left out but it was recently when I felt acceptance when Dwayn's Mom came to thank me personally after a show. It was like I got closure Once again Fanbase would like to offer our love and support and we thank you for talking about this subject, I’m sure Dwayne is smiling down and joining you in the mosh pits. Okay I have heard your gigs are insane, if we have never been to a BOB gig, what could we expect if we were to attend one of your gigs? Well u can definitely expect to see and feel amazing high levels of energy as the band always gives it all and we never hold back. We feel that if the crowd feels the music and goes away with a smile on their faces we have done exactly what we came to do. Each gig is a stepping stone for us and we try to better each and every one that we play. Who is the songwriter in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? As a whole we all play an equal part in the writing process, the lyrics on the other hand is mostly written by vocalist Chaz Nielsen but we have all played a role in some way. Who is some of the bands influences? Soilwork, All That Remains, As I Lay Dying, Darkest Hour, In Flames, Seether, Rise Against, Slipknot, Killswitch Engage, Avenged Sevenfold, As Blood Runs Black, Bring Me the Horizon, All Shall Perish, White Chapel, Thou Art is Murder, Parkway Drive etc. Can you name some of the bands achievements? Featured on MK Ondergronds 100th episode with our song “Perception” Completed two music videos which include Perception and A Life in the Dust Toured to Durban and Pitermaritzburg with bands such as Chromium and Reject Theory Songs were aired on radio stations such as Mix FM and Zone radio CT

Continued on next page ……….

How does a BOB song come together, is there a set process that the riffs, bass and drums come together along with the lyrics or do you just kind of jam together and something comes together? It all begins in the band room and normally is born with the guitarists playing a riff they came up with and then will be filled in with drums, bass and lastly but certainly not least vocals. Not the most technical way of doing things but simplicity is sometimes best. We find writing I studio is most efficient though, because in a band room, ideas get lost sometimes. With the exception of songs like Complete Me which Chaz wrote, most of our guitar riffs were created by Dwayne Tomovic. May he rest in peace, gone but never forgotten. With the state of South African music and it being so hard to make it in the industry, do you feel being a metal band, it makes it much harder and how do you cope with that? We definitely think that Metal being our genre of choice is definitely a challenge purely because Metal is an ever growing genre and is still very small in this country. However with the Metal bands that have been performing here lately such as Metallica and with events companies such as Ramfest bringing band like Killswitch Engage and Trivium things are definitely starting to look up. Also with Bands like Lamb Of

God and even Asking Alexandria due to perform early next year this really boosts the country’s perception and views on Metal and this will definitely help the genre be taken more seriously and kick things into overdrive. You have music videos, a dvd and lots of music out, how can people get hold of your Music? -Twitter @BecauseBetrayal – SoundCloud Sa Music News Zone Radio CT Mix Fm radio www.facebook.com/becauseofbetrayal www.reverbnation.com/becauseofbetrayal And Check Out our Music Videos on YouTube: Perception A life In The Dust Official Music Video

Lastly thank you for doing this interview with Fanbase Music Magazine, how can people get hold of you, do you have any social medias? We use social media now and then to create “Anarchy”, but yes, you can get hold of us on Facebook and Twitter, Reverbnation, BandCamp and a few others on Google. Do you have any last messages to our readers and your fans? Well from the whole band we thank each and every person that gives us a chance to showcase our talents and get our music out there. We also want to thank FanBase and all for the opportunity to speak to the people and giving us a chance to feature in this month’s issue. We value and respect all our fans and all the bands we play with. Our message to any aspiring musicians out there would to never stop believing in yourself. It takes a lot of patience and humility to get somewhere in this industry and God knows we’ve learned hard lessons along the way as a band… But we’ve taken the beatings as a band together too and we’ve stood by one another through thick and thin – that’s a brotherhood of trust and support that doesn’t just crumble when times get tough. Stand up for yourself, don’t let people walk over you and another important thing to remember is this. Whatever anybody else says of you behind your back is none of your business. Just play your music and work hard. Always do it for the passion and love of the music. Where and when will you be performing for the rest of 2013? 2 November – Wolmer Lounge PTA 8 November - Arcade Empire PTA 9 November - Crossroads (Old Black Dahlia)(FTU album launch) 30 November - Chivas Rock PTA

Hi guys, I’m pretty excited to be featuring Mizera in the mag, can you tell us the history of the band? A long, long time ago, …there was Damelin, a place of party, a place of learning, a place of DOOOOOOOM!!!!! Mizera had started as a 4 piece band jamming for college to receive petty marks at their weekly band performance class, little did they know what was to come, they grew tired of covers and trying to please the judges every week and so they set out on an adventure, no a rampage, to create what is known as METAL! From this point they knew where they were going and left Damelin to pursue a life of honour, a life of glory, a life of jamming! From this point the madness never ceased and three and a half years later they are producing insane sounds of pure, raw brutality!

What genre of music would you classify your band as? Thrash/Death Metal with a pinch of groove for good measure.

What are some of the band’s influences? Musically we gravitate towards bands like Metallica, Pantera, Devildriver, Slayer, Sepultura, Lamb Of God, Slipknot, The Black Dahlia Murder, Dimmu Borgir, Gorgoroth and A Perfect circle. We like ‘em loud and heavy!

What can you tell us about each member of the band?

Sean Dalton: Vocalist/Lead Guitarist. A small town dude, Sean was always against the norm and against what others were telling him to follow. He doesn’t give a damn about nuffin except jamming. “Music has always been the key part of my life and without it I have no idea who I would be or where I would be.” He is currently in Mizera and also running a solo project “Mr. Reaper”.

Courtney Gibson: Drummer. Life…. Beat… Music… Courtney is the band pet, based in a small town in Mpumalanga called Graskop. She travels to JHB for 2 weekends a month to play for Mizera. Courtney is also known for her solo career as an acoustic guitarist and singer. “Heavy metal has always been part of my soul and part of who I truly am, however I really dig all kinds of music and love to share the message of peace and nature”

Callysta Van Niekerk: Guitarist. Callysta is a perfectionist. No bum note escapes her wrath, albeit a gentle wrath mostly. Although she is disciplined when it comes to guitar and music, she enjoys letting loose on and off stage, and is the band clown. When the mood strikes, she can be very talkative, so the band is never without conversation.

Andrew Wald: Bassist. Andrew is the cheeky grandpa of the band. He enjoys pushing the limits of the other members and takes great joy in making awkward comments in order to elicit a laugh. He loves to goof around and lighten the mood. He is the most seasoned musician of us, having fronted a band 10 years ago in high school.

If we have never been to a Mizera gig, what could we expect, would imagine the mosh pits are intense? You can expect a shit load of head-banging, insane energy and just one hell of a time! We do love our Mizera pits, our fans seem to be as crazy as we are!

Do you get nervous before a gig? For the most part, yes. Nerves are a huge part of the show. They show that you want to do well and that you give a damn about your fans loving your music and performance. It means that you are truly concerned about giving the crowd what they came for. Sean doesn't usually get nervous at all but Courtney gets the pre-gig jitters.

Do you have any band rituals before you go on stage? We just really get together as a band, regroup, have a Jager and get each other psyched!

Who is the song writer in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? Sean Dalton. “My inspirations come from a whole array of different things. My mood, my current life situations, my need and desire to create art. Obviously a lot of different bands do influence me as well, which range from A Perfect Circle all the way through to The Black Dahlia Murder and even bands such as Gorgoroth.

Can you explain the process of putting a song together, from the riffs, drums to the vocals till you get to the end product? We don’t quite have a set process because every time we compose new music we are in a new state of mind and being and we take a different approach every time. Life changes and so routines change with it. Sean: A key thing in my song writing for the band is that I create what I call a skeleton song, I make the basis of which the rest of the band can then add their individual styles and sounds.

What are some of your achievements so far? We love jamming all gigs and to us every gig we jam is a great achievement, every fan we gain is an even bigger achievement. Some of the highlights include: Thornfest the camp 2011 The Cannimambo Free Form Fest, Graskop 2010, 2011. 2012, 2013 Winterjam 2010

The Roodepoort Civic Theatre Step Up, Rustenburg Emalyth Arts Expo 2013 Hail suicide: Purify SA tour

Since the band formed, what has been the most important aspect of been in a band and creating music for Wrust? Being able to tour meet different people is an amazing experience but been all to produce music that people relate to is most fulfilling. To be able to write music that you love and finding that one person who understands it’s a miracle lol

Can you tell our African metal readers a bit about Wrust history? Back in the 90s a band called Metal Orizon dominated the Metal Scene. I would safely say that they started it having regular gigs at a place called Motswedi bar. This is where all those that were into Rock or Metal music met, Sharing music exchanging Cassette and so on. This is where some of the first Wrust members met and later used that place as a rehearsal spot- it belongs to metal Orizon. Soon after the formation of Rust ( WRUST) we played alongside Metal Orizon touring Botswana then landed in Durban in 2002 ( Battle of the bands). The result of the battle of bands was getting a slot to play alongside Sepultura which we got and Master won a drum kit for that. Mirth of Sorrow demo was released and all of a sudden we started playing alongside big bands Entombed, konkhra and so on. Soulless Machine album was recorded in four days at BIziac Studio in 2006. Witchdoctorrecords were so happy with the product that they offered to distribute it. Most of 2011 the band faced a lot of challenges including death of family members thus causing the band to come to complete halt however I continued to write the music during this difficult times. In 2012 we started recording at the SD studios which lead to the independent release of Intellectual Metamorphosis in 2013.In June we were invited to headline a Solo Macello festival in Milan.

What is the Botswana metal and overall music industry like and were you think it may be in the next five years? I honestly think it will still be same if not stronger .Population in this country is the most challenging aspect; we just don’t have the numbers. Plus Metal is an underground entity which makes it worse when it comes to the numbers. However the little numbers we have are hungrier and go all out to show the whole how metal they are from clothes to craziness during life gigs. Metal attire are a norm in this country even during normal days.

Wrust is releasing their forth coming album ‘Intellectual Metamorphosis’ and we would like to know all that their possibly is to know about the release; give us the downlow? The album is available through download at the http:// wrust.bandcamp.com. It is both available for streaming and purchase. One can also get us a physical directly from us wrustmusic@gmail.com

How would Wrust describe their music to the readers? We like to think Wrust music is post thrash metal music of the mid 90s with a newer sound. We also try and incorporate African beats and rhythm to our music. Song like Caress the soul and the day of Sacrifice are typical example. Other songs like Brain Spasm and Gravedigger are more Death Metal songs even the lyrics. Most of Wrust lyrical content covers liberation of the Soul and hating how such a powerful entity called human has been degraded to such low, low form of life.

When not on stage or in studio, where would the Wrust members most likely be found? We will all have day Jobs it would be nice to be doing this professionally lol

What is the main message that is spread through Wrusts music? The main message is freedom of the Soul, freeing your mind from all the things that enslave both the mind, body and soul. Looking at life at a different angle and finding the truth through your own eyes. As in Spiral of torture “People don’t know why we live yet they oppress you” A human being is not just the body, there is more than just that. Find you own truth and be free.

From time to time I like to hear some stories from the bands I interview about funny or maybe strange things that may have happened a tour or show, does Wrust have any such stories to share? Lots of shits happen during tours I’m not sure if you would see it funny. During the African Chaos tour ( Rhutz, AOA and Wrust) we had a tyre Burst in the middle of Wild Cats infested territory. We were having our last gig in Maun. The tyre of the trailer burst we had to change it and we could hear lion roars and Hyena sound closeby, you can imagine how freaked we all were, the Gig started at 12 midnight and it was one best gigs were ever played. The fans literally helped us to unpack our rig.

What other African metal bands would Wrust suggest to their fans around the globe? Overthrust, Mortal souls from Kenya, Boargazm, Facing the Gallows, Marching Dead just to name a few.

Who would the band like to thank and were can your fans find you online? We would like to thank all that believe in Wrust and all those that buy our stuff.

It has been with great anticipation that I have been asked to do an interview with Moment of Clarity. A hugely popular band from Durbanville in Cape Town. And who better to describe what they do best than the band themselves: “During the winter of 2007, within the confines of four walls, a seed was planted that took root and developed into MOMENT OF CLARITY. Though not a primary objective of the band, they do seem to successfully accomplish resurrecting Metal from out of the bedroom and dark, dingy clubs and migrating their fresh sound on to the mainstream stages where it rightfully belongs. Bringing on influences from the major metal acts that have gone before them, they incorporate blindingly fast riffs, intricate guitar solos, technical prowess, harsh vocals, mixed in with melodic undertones making you want to tap your foot on the ground or at the same time, quite simply get up and bring bounce to the mosh pit. It's an obscure mix, but obviously one that works and under continuous experimentation, considering some of the more recent songs the band has written. MOMENT OF CLARITY have featured on all the major venues and festivals in Cape Town and have shared the stage with many of Cape Town's finest bands. In 2008 the band released its self produced debut EP featuring the songs Warchild, Grinder, To the Streets and Mercy or Die which have all become killer crowd favorites over time, which is a true testament to the deadly cocktail of Melodic Metal. The band returned to the scene, after an 18 month layoff period (for various reasons), stronger than ever and, is currently enjoying a vibrant gigging schedule. Studio recordings for MOMENT OF CLARITY’S debut full length album are currently underway and they look forward to releasing a much anticipated single in the coming months” Go check them out on Soundcloud to hear the brutal force that is Moment of Clarity - https://soundcloud.com/ momentofclarityband

Introduce the band members. Lindsey Roussouw (vocals), Neil Bezuidenhoudt (guitars), Stefan Human (guitars), Mike Cubic (bass) and Andrew Potter (drums)

Tell us how the band was formed? Moment of Clarity started out in mid 2007, after Mike and Lindsey’s previous band (Scarlet Host) ended in 2006. It wasn’t very difficult to find members, as most of the current unit as it stands today, have all been friends from early school days and have been in and out of bands prior to Moment of Clarity.

Where does the name Moment of Clarity come from? Sitting round a pub table, spit balling names, after a dozen or so names were thought up then tossed aside, we all went quiet, then Neil piped up Moment of Clarity, and we were all like Hell yeah, so it was literally a moment of clarity in the calm of the storm.

Do you have any plans to record an album/EP? Yes, December 2013 sees our EP launch, and our Album launch will take place during the early part of 2014.

What are your influences?

Killswitch Engage, Arch Enemy, 36 Crazyfists, In Flames, Passenger, Tool, Korn, Disturbed (to name a few)…. and beer

Favorite local band to gig with/support? Too many to mention here, but With Dawn, All Guns Full Ammo, Mind Assault to mention a few.

Favorite venue/festival to gig thus far? Ramfest & Summerfest, Winterfest and Whiplash

What song do you wish you had written and why? On any given night – 36 Crazyfists, the bass line is amazing.

What gear do you guys use to get that killer sound you have?

We have a member called Neil Bezuidenhout, this man is all about tone, he spends hours every day perfecting his guitar and lead tone, and is always experimenting.

What do you think of the metal scene in South Africa? Do you also feel that we as metal fans deserve more exposure on radio and TV? The metal scene is enjoying a bit of a resurgence, mainly due to more exposure, like MK Ondergrond, Radio shows like Holy Grail of Rock and the Ozone with Bryan o Pines, as well as festivals like Ramfest, Summerfest, Winterfest, all creating a platform for bands to showcase what they do. Yes metal has too many stereotypes attached, but what the average listener doesn’t understand about metal is that there are so many sub genres of metal, which often gets categorized, and unfortunately, stereotyped into one genre. Of course what doesn’t help either, is the fact that the mere sound of the word metal immediately aligns the average listener’s mind set into “brutal / hardcore kill the puppies” kind of metal, which is not the case, considering you get melodic metal, folk metal, power metal, and so on - the list is enormous. Even within these sub genres, if you are not “heavy” enough for the “hardcore” scene, then there is a tendency to become a little fragmented and detached which is rather unfortunate, considering music – irrespective of genre – is a universal language that should bring people together, not divide them. This is a condition we believe needs to change, as we are all in the same boat.

What are you currently listening to?

Disarm the Descent – Killswitch Engage, Sounds of a playground falling – In flames If your houses was burning, what is the one thing you need to go back and save? My PC. Insurance cannot replace Data.

Next up is “I, Obsolete”, which starts off very unassuming before bursting into a chorus, which I cannot describe other than godly, slow and heavier than a fat chick after an all you can eat buffet. I wanna see Arc Reactor in a head to head with Korn, battling it out. Not even to mention the really cool little solo in the background, it just adds so much epicness before the song ends. Next up is “Cirque de Vietcon”, and the riffing is twisted, and the song is quite reminiscent of Black Label Society, with slower paced riffs inbetween. But the main riff is so twisted , I love it. “Plus Minus” arrives and I don’t quite know what to make of it, it’s so dark, and then at 4 minutes it kicks into another gear, with a bridge that’s so funky, it’s got a real redneck metal feel to it, before it slows down almost half tempo till the end. “Power Struggle” and “Taunt” pass by so quickly that I hardly realize, but I must say that intro riff on “Power Struggle” is so old skool, I think Iron Maiden would have approved, and probably try to copy it. Finally we get to the album’s first single “Come Play Dead” and I am going to have trouble telling you just how good a tune this is. I can’t fault anything on that track, its heavy and the guitars on this is just insane. So many different tempo’s and so well executed it blows my mind, I wanna hear this live. All of a sudden the opening riff of “The Witching Hour”, bellows through my speakers and I can only believe this is so metal, it’s got the riffing of Thrash and the low end, heavy chorus of Nu-Metal. Being one of the older songs on the album, it’s very melodic, and I can see people singing along to this, while trying not to break their necks. The albums ends with the ballad sounding, “Far Beyond” It’s so much different than the other songs but brings a kind of balance, to end the album on. With the planets finally aligned, I get to review Arc Reactor’s debut album, Post Modern Construct. And let me tell you, they hype that has been building nearly drove me insane. And the snippets being released by my good friend Rusty, did not quench the thirst I have developed for Arc Reactor. And a serious thirst like that can only be quenched by some balls to the wall metal, and Arc Reactor delivers. They promised it would blow us away and by toutatis!, they have managed to craft an album that the metal gods themselves must have mastered. The production is epic. And before anyone even thinks I am about to say it is good for a SA album, let me correct you, its epic by any standard.

After this rollercoaster ride I’m a bigger Arc fan than ever. They changed the game in my mind, for SA metal at least, proving that going against the grain does pay off. Unlike so many bands that sound the same, they created an album that I can easily say sounds like nothing you will hear, on our stages and festivals the next coming year.

With the first sounds of “Change”, I have to ask myself, “I am I listening to Korn?” They got that old Korn sound down so tight it is freaky. The guitars are shredding away, the drums and bass in perfect frenetic unison. I’m in metal heaven. This so refreshing that I am at risk of destroying the desk my PC is standing on. This is what I have been waiting for the whole year. No disrespect to any other bands but I am about to eargasm, Arc Reactor hits the spot. Every time!!! I’m that kid again, angry and this song is my mouthpiece. The song is angry, flows well and the drummer is epic, he can play drums, more than one beat bass drum frenzy, we have become so used to in almost every other band.

An easy 5 out of 6 strings for Post Modern Construct. I must advise that you will need a bigger system to listen to this because any cheap sound system will just not do this album justice, it’s beyond phat.

“Unspoken”, starts off at an groove metal type pace, and keeps going building and building, and you can hear the guitars, and vocals become more and more angry as the songs builds to a anthemic climax. Everything is pleasing to the ear, the tone of the guitars, the subtle little cymbal hits. Every note/beat has a purpose, engulfing the listener.

They are the complete band, great vocals(although a bit Jonathan Davis sounding), crazy guitarists which forms immensely a solid unit, and a monster rhythm section. Mr Pickover you have restored my faith in drummers!!! And to Mr Crazyfingers, now I know why you are called that, epic bass playing to say the least.

“and in other news” Bon Jovi walks fan down the aisle Jon Bon Jovi made one super-fan's dreams come true when he surprised her by walking her down the aisle Saturday at the Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas – 24 years after he married wife Dorothea at the exact same venue. In August, Australian Bon Jovi fan Branka Delic had started an online petition recruiting him for her wedding to Gonzalo Cladera. The rocker was to be in town the same weekend for the "Because We Can" tour at the MGM Grand. "Bon Jovi, we're begging you. Make this wedding happen!" Delic wrote. She also sent pleading Tweets leading up to the wedding, such as, "The day is near, Jon boy. Is it a date or what? Please don't let this devoted Aussie bride down." Still, Delic couldn't believe it when the musician actually showed up to lend his arm. Afterward, she Tweeted, "You did more than make my dream come true, you changed my life forever! An amazing man with an amazing generous heart." Bon Jovi shared his own photo of the wedding walk, “captioning, "Congratulations @branksd! May you & Gonzalo have a lifetime of happiness, love & memories together ALWAYS!"

Blink 182 to do it for the fans LOS ANGELES, CA (October 21, 2013) — Celebrating a decade since the release of blink -182’s untitled album, there will be two special shows at the Palladium to mark the 10th anniversary. Recorded throughout 2003, blink -182 marks a departure from the band's earlier work, inspired by lifestyle changes and side projects. Produced by Jerry Finn and released November 18, 2003, the band will perform the album in its entirety at a special pair of shows at the Hollywood Palladium November 6th and 7th 2013. “The blink-182 album was a sea change in our band. The way we wrote songs, performed, and thought of ourselves evolved into something deeper than it had ever been before says Mark Hoppus. The recording process was special. We used all original vintage equipment and recording techniques. Echo chambers were built into showers stalls. Flanging sounds by running the tape between two machines. It was intensely personal process for all of us. Ten years on, it still holds a special place.” Noted by critics as the bands most inspired material, fans can expect an amazing show as the band intends to play the record from start to finish. “Our self-titled album is defiantly an album we're really proud of and to celebrate its 10 year anniversary by playing this album in its entirety is going to be hella special.” says Travis Barker. This will also be the only time the band will have played some of the songs off the record before a live audience. VIP Packages will be available for the November 6th and 7th shows via Ticketmaster.com and blink182.com and will include VIP opportunities, exclusive merchandise, access to a Q&A with the band and more. Additionally this fall fans can expect to see the launch of the blink–182 fan club. "I am proud and excited to announce that we will be launching the highly anticipated and robust Blink-182 fan club, The Rabbit Hole says Tom DeLonge. We will have a collision of limited edition merchandise, ticketing and digital services exclusively to Rabbit Hole members. Consider us your new doctor, and we will be giving you daily physical exams."

Hayden Dunstun unleashes Wonderland Reloaded

By: Hayde

It seems Hayden Dunstun has been very busy and working very hard of late. His latest work is set to get everyone talking. Now you may all know his track Wonderland, well he has decided to work on the track and well simply make it better. He has changed a bit of the lyrics and he has even tweaked the title a bit. In a recent press release, Hayden had this to say about Wonderland Reloaded. “Wonderland was released as a single about a year or so ago. It was only ever in demo form but still performed better than much of my earlier material. People liked it and I always wanted to afford it the proper studio treatment and produce it professionally. I decided a few months ago to re-record most of the tracking and replaced the drums, guitars, bass and vocals. I left the piano and keys untouched. I always liked that part. Piano isn’t my strongest area so didn’t want to risk loosing something that worked well. I changed a few of the closing lyrics as well. Song writing to me seems to continue even after I’ve recorded something. I sometimes wish I had thought of a particular lyric and then it’s too late. Well in this case I changed it. I think the new lyric works well. Its not standard practice I suppose but it’s like owning a nice new car. If I want to repaint it I should if I like it better that way. As with all my songs to date they are always double edged. There is always more than one way to read it. I have always been a bit of a sci-fi nut and post apocalyptic worlds fascinated me ever since first watching Mad Max and Beyond Thunderdome. That’s Wonderland. A world destroyed by greed, desire and a realisation too late that destruction is a one way track. World can also be a relative concept.

en Dunstun

It’s also about relationships. It’s about the past staying just where it belongs… in the past. That’s what wonderland is all about. Moving on, rebuilding and surviving. Sometimes when I listen back to what I’ve written at some later date it represents a completely different story. I have to conclude that writers may not always know what they are writing until its too late. lol. I play most of the instruments, namely, drums, bass, guitars and vocal as well as keyboard and piano. My producer Paul Baggott does always add his own flavour too. He brought in some additional acoustic guitar and tambourine on this one as well as his incredible ability to mix my tracks the way I imagine them. He knows how I do my arrangements and he augments the style nicely. As usual Downloads can be downloaded free or paid for at my Reverbnation profile http://www.reverbnation.com/ haydendunstan along with other of my songs. I encourage people to download and also stream them. Make copies and give them to other people too. I make music for it to be listened to. It only has value to me if people listen. Once again to the folk that support my efforts a big thank you for listening. There will be a new ballad out in the new year entitled “Time Will Tell” and if all goes according to plan this one will be a deep, powerful duet with my lovely wife Catherynn. I’m looking forward to watching it grow. There is also a little bit of country rock on the way with “Watch the Angels Fall” I’m very excited to get my teeth into this one too. Until then play it loud and play it often whatever “it” is. “ So there you have it ladies and gentleman. I have heard the track and I must say I really like it. It has been playlisted on Zone Radio (so request it), I think its only a matter of time till other radio stations catch on to it and it will be a huge hit.

Interview by: Duwyne Clayton

Hi there thank you for doing this interview with us, can you tell us what is the story of Sitarah? Firstly, thank you so much for affording us the opportunity to do this interview. The story of Sitarah is rather short and sweet. The two of us started Sitarah after our former project, “GRITT” ended. Due to the fact that we both live in different cities, it is quite difficult to keep the project together, but we both enjoy what we do and will continue to do it. Who is in the band, can you tell us a little bit about each member in the band? Michiel Barnard is the singer while Dougie Fick plays lead guitar. For the purposes of recording, we make use of session musicians.

What kind of genre would you classify your music in? This has always been a difficult thing to classify as both of us have varying influences. Although we would say that we are an alternative, hard rock act. Who is the songwriter in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? Dougie primarily writes and produces the music in studio and Michiel is the primary lyricist. Our inspiration is mainly drawn from past experiences which mean everything from partying to depression to any random event that has happened in our lives. You currently have music air played on Zone Radio, just how important is radio stations like that in your music career? We truly believe that stations such as Zone Radio are very important to a music industry, particularly in South Africa where the market share for rock and metal bands is particularly small. Zone Radio really puts the power in the fans’ hands, exactly where it should be. If we have never seen you play live, what can we expect from one of your live gigs? High energy, electric and mind blowing performance. We have always prided ourselves on delivering the best possible performance no matter what the circumstances are. Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? Michiel really likes to just keep it mellow and find his own space while Dougie does the whole one beer, two cigarettes thing.

Continued on next page ………..

What are some of your achievements so far? Well we have been fortunate enough to have travelled to the UK before for a tour of the summer festivals which was highly successful. We have also enjoyed plenty of air play thanks to Zone Radio and our latest music video (which is a cover of the Nine Inch Nails classic “Hurt”) is enjoying some good hits on Youtube. Where do you see yourself in 5 years in terms of music? Well presently, Dougie would like to make his way back to Cape Town so that he and Michiel can reunite and continue creating some banging tunes for all the fans out there. The music industry is hard to crack, how do you stay above water and inspired? You really have to be a continuous presence on social media and make sure that the public have access to the tunes. Every time someone listens to our songs or tells us how they enjoy them etc, it inspires and motivates us to keep playing. Keep listening to our songs! Thank you for doing this interview, how can people get hold of you, do you have any social networks? Sitarah is on Facebook and Twitter. The more fans the better so join our page or follow us on twitter to get the latest news and views! Thanks again for this awesome opportunity! Have a good one and keep rocking!

How did you get into photography? Like many other people, I have been playing around with cameras since childhood. But the “bug” to do photography on a more serious level, bit me in 2012.

Who is your favourite photographer and why?

For Concert Photography I use the Tamron 24-70mm F/2.8 and the Tamron 70200mm F/2.8 lenses.

Wow, this is tricky. It is not easy to isolate a single, since each one that I look up to has contributed to my career in a unique kind of way. Elmer van Zyl – Wedding (and HDR Specialist) photographer and close friend of mine. Scott Kelby and Matt Kloskowski – Kelby Media and Training. Alan Hess – Concert Photographer, Kelby Training instructor and author of All Access: Your Backstage Pass to Concert Photography.

Why do you like photography?

What advice do you have for upcoming photographers?

What camera are you currently using? Canon EOS 600D, awaiting the arrival of my Canon EOS 70D.

I love creativity as well as the diversity. You can have 10 togs, making photos of the same scene/subject, and end up with 10 totally different photos afterwards.

What style of photography do you like?

Find your niche, and become the best in that field. Learn and understand the other genres of photography as well. Never stop learning. How can people get hold of you? http://henniesphotography.co.za Facebook: Hennie Smit Photography Twitter: HennieSmit69

I enjoy Concert photography the most, and see myself specializing in it. That doesn’t mean that I do not enjoy the other genres that are on offer. I also enjoy the challenges in sport/action photography as well as wedding photography.

Where do you see yourself in five years, in terms of your photography? I would love to be doing photography full-time by then, focusing on Concert Photography.

Review by: James Roberts

I had the extreme pleasure/pain of Walking The Daisies to my first Rocking The Daisies Festival.

Cape Town’s green festival is held near Malmesbury and Darling on the beautiful Cloof Wine Estate and based on hype an attendance is one of South Africa’s biggest. This year the venue was maxed out with 16500 visitors from all over the country and world. 200 of these attendees, myself included, chose to walk the 50 kilometers from Cape Town to the Event. Our journey started Thursday the 3rd of October, after loading our bags we formed groups and dug into our goodie packs. We all started the walk with great enthusiasm; we quickly littered the beach with footprints and delittered it of trash, filling our recycle first bags for the first 16km stretch. You'd be surprised by the amount of trash there is when you start to look. We continued for a total of 26km along the utterly beautiful coastline, through rivers and over dunes where we literally walked the daisies as if on the yellow brick road. That night we were treated to vegetarian burgers and a very informing talk on the effects of meat production to our environment. Then Touchwood a wonderfully harmonised acoustic folk band treated our ears with their unique blend of marimbas, cello, double bass, drums, guitar, violin and ukulele. Just the lullaby we needed for much needed rest. Although I must say many were dancing. The next day spirits were high and we set off inland for Rocking The Daisies 'RTD'.

Unfortunately for me mentally I was fitter than physically so each step become progressively more painful. Arriving at Mamre was enough of a distraction though with its cute houses and bright coloured gardens. It must be mentioned though that the people you meet are what really make the walk fun, conversations spark up randomly with would be strangers and we all get along. We then made a pit stop to plant 100 trees in the community garden an initiative made possible by Greenpop. After a tasty lunch and some relief for my legs we made the final push for RTD. Over one last hill I limped, falling behind, but determined to finish. On top we saw our destination it was quite an impressive sight... With blisters, pains but plenty of joy we stormed the main stage in time to see the tail end of Short Straw's performance. It was a good feeling having made it. From then on we were treated to the top notch event that is Rocking The Daisies. That night I managed to catch the shows of Goodluck, The Kiffness, P.H.Fat and Sibot. Goodluck hit the massive main stage with a bang the lead singer dressed in a flashy jazzy dress that impressed. Their electro jazz sounds got the feet tapping. The Kiffness followed suit only on the electro stage. This stage was equally impressive, 8 multipliers supported a large waiving red spider web like cloth that attached to a central pillar of light. The Stage was one big screen and had spots that span out streams of light in all directions. The Kiffness pulled out with their onsies (suits made of one piece of material zipped up) David Scotts Said Kiff Whilest Shandu's said Ness. They jammed their uniquely South African Tjoons with guest appearances from Matthew Gold and more, they had the crowd smiling. P.H.Fat Filled the main stage with his infectious new album Happiness Machines. He put on a good show and was clearly enjoying it. Top notch SA Glitch Hop. Back to the electro stage drum roll please SIBOT has arrived but really there was a drum line to add a little summin summin to his intro coupled with amazing lighting then boom went the bass as Sibots fingers destroyed the drum pad. Unfortunately at this point I had very little left in me and after a 20min limp I retired to my tent.

Saturday bacon and eggs got me going and I decided to spend my day at the main stage. Winds persisted the whole weekend so layer those clothes. My legs still very damaged I couldn't party to the max or join the mass crowd but the listening was still good. Matthew Gold’s voice was soothing, Woodstock Mafia got my head banging on and almost had me jumping despite the pain. Desmond and the Tutus! Always a treat! The guitarist carried the lead singer in on his back almost dropped him and then pointed to the mic and said sing. Soon the crowd was moving and singing to their songs that never seem to die. A quick break and then Alt-J! Alt-J was my favorite performance, after being sardined into the crowd and about 30minutes of waiting they came up unannounced and started playing. They really didn’t do much on stage and the lighting wasn't spectacular, everything was a bit more subdued and beautiful. The crowd swayed to the music and attempted singing along whilst making triangles with their fingers. I had to teach the peeps around me how to do it correctly which got some laughs, all in all it was very enjoyable and took my mind off my feet. The Hives completely on the other side of the spectrum explode onto stage and in true rock n roll spirit bring the place to life. A very charismatic lead singer leads the crowd skillfully and never stops moving, he was in your face, loud and unashamed. I just remember noticing the photographers going bananas with all the poses they threw. In my opinion a very good performance if not a bit screechy, also they seemed very full of themselves which kinda bugged me. After that I went to the food court and stopped by the electro stage on the way to bed, much to my own disgust missing Boyz Noize, But I couldn't stay on my feet, I still have a limp today. As for Skunk Anansie, sources tell me it was very good and took many by surprise. Sunday morning was aptly highlighted by Matthew Mole, the first South African artist to top the iTunes charts. Irritatingly the Sunday weather was much more pleasant and many sat in the sun to watch as the seemingly shy Matthew plucked away on his guitar with a foot on the bass drum and a snare for filler pieces. He was quite taken aback by the turnout and continually thanked us and interacted in what was termed by most girls as a very cute manner. By: Darryl Putter

THAT’S WHAT WE DO”, opgelewer. “Ek wil graag hê my musiek moet ’n positiewe verskil in mense se lewens maak.” “Ek stel my siel bloot,” verduidelik hy.

Continued on next page ……..

“Ek lê my siel bloot,” verduidelik hy. Three of the biggest names in South African gospel will perform on stage together on Sunday 15 December at the Carnival City Big Top Arena. The bill will be topped by the Queen of Gospel herself, Hlengiwe Mhlaba. Originally from KwaZulu-Natal, she has become a national household name. Hlengiwe started singing professionally just over eight years ago and her debut albumDwala Lami was released in 2005. She has since released six more albums and four live DVDS, and has collected a SAMA and numerous Crown Gospel Awards along the way. Veteran gospel artist Solly Mahlangu spent 20 years in the Ministry before deciding to focus on gospel singing to spread the word. His powerful, energetic stage presence and active performance, coupled with his warm make Solly a compelling performer. At the fourth Crown Gospel Awards in 2011, he walked away with the awards for Best Male Gospel Artist, Best Gospel Artist and Best Gospel song. The third star in the Praises line-up is S’fiso Ncwane, also from KwaZulu-Natal. S’fiso started singing at the tender age of eight, and by the time he was 10, he was singingisiCathamiya gospel songs. GRAEME WATKINS PROJECT by Rene Parkin Maritz

When the news broke that Graeme Watkins and his band ‘Graeme Watkins Project ‘ were performing at Café Roux in Noordhoek on Friday the 25 October 2013, I just had to buy tickets. Café Roux is a lovely restaurant, with good food and good wine! The venue has an indoor and outdoor area featuring a lovely set up for shows. The mouth-watering burgers are top notch prepared by Chef Julian Gabriel, ranging from beef to free-range chicken, and the desserts are some of the best I have ever tasted. We arrived early, thinking we would be the first to arrive, but the place was already pumping with people. Café Roux also have a full licensed bar, and the waiters are very attentive to your needs. Thinking back to Idols and when I first experienced Graeme Watkins, I had flash backs to when Graeme was in the top 3 in 2009. What a treat he was to watch. Three words come to mind ~ energy, excitement, and sheer madness. One thing that stood out for me in his performances, week on week, was his eyes ~ his eyes told a story of their own. Each week I waited in anticipation to see what he would bring to that stage. Graeme never disappointed. My best memory was the night he performed ‘Loslappie’. So when a close friend informed me of this night I couldn’t wait to experience all of that in a ‘live’ setting. This was the night I was going to experience Mr Graeme Watkins in person J

At 9pm the show kicked off and what a show! They have the ability to evoke so much energy that everyone was up and moving by the end of the evening. Graeme and his band had the audience spellbound. I sat with my camera in hand and couldn’t get enough. I remember looking at him and seeing him literally ‘airborne’. What a show, and what an entertainer! As a band they super talented and are tuned in to each other. Upon leaving I was given their new album by a friend. Graeme Watkins Project are young, funky, and bring a unique sound. If you haven’t purchased the CD – THE GRAEME WATKINS PROJECT ‘Soldier On’, I would highly recommend you do so. It resides in my car, and I have it on repeat. Just to mention a few highlights of their journey – Their music is described as pop, indie, rock and electronic. Their debut album “Corridors of The Mind” was released in March 2011. They have performed at most events and festivals around the country. In the space of one year they’ve produced 5 Top 10 hits singles from the album. 2013 has seen their fresh new single “Fight When We’re young”, produced by LA based producer Jeff Blue, hop right back into the SA Chart scene. GWP’s music is making waves not just on home soil, but Internationally, and after being a witness to their stage presence I can truly say it is an act you should make every attempt to see. So get out to one of their shows and be prepared for a night that will excite and enchant you. Links ~ http://caferoux.co.za/ http://graemewatkinsproject.com/about.html

Wednesday Nights- R40, R30 if your on a bands list Carling Black Label Battle of the Bands (Line ups will be updated on the events as soon as it's released)

Heart of Music and Hot Rocket, in association with Rumours Lounge and Carling Black Label Draught is proud to announce the annual ‘Carling Black Label Battle of the Bands’. Venturing away from the traditional Rock band battle, we have decided to cater for the ‘underground’ scene, specifically Metal, Alternative and Hard Rock and be the first to represent Carling Black Label in the Metal, Alternative and Hard Rock scene. With the help of our sponsors, South African Breweries, Music Connection, Atelier Recording Studios, CyberSkin Tattoos, S.K.O.A. Magazine, Timeless Photography, Odin Band Management and Rumours Lounge, we are able to reward the winners of each category with breath-taking prizes. The battle will run from 16 October 2013 to 15 February 2014 every consecutive Wednesday at Rumours Lounge, except for the final, which will be held on a Saturday, excluding 1 January and 25 December. The winner of each genre will be determined by the amount of guests that arrive to support each band, as well as judges. Representatives of Hot Rocket and Heart of Music will not be on the judges’ panel, to ensure fair play. What set this battle apart from all others is not only the magnitude of prizes but also the fact that all participating bands will be paid for their performance and that they only have to perform twice to win the competition.By looking at the overwhelming interest that this project has already received, we expect it to be one of the biggest battles Gauteng has ever seen and we are extremely proud to be a part of it.How we choose the winner? 20% door votes + 80% judge votes. The sound engineer will judge the overall technical side of the performance, Fred(Owner of Rumours) will judge how the band handles the venue, and Ray Harrison will judge the overall performance. (If you want to you can go chat to Ray after the show for some Constructive criticism, he will be sitting taking notes through out every bands set.) Bryan will judge the over all professionalism, how fast they reply to emails, did they mail a list of people attending before the show, how much did they advertise ect. Heart of music events and Hot rocket events won’t be involved in the voting decision. This is a great way to gain gigs, get paid and stand a chance to win awesome prices.Enter by posting your band's name on the wall along with a link to your facebook page, also specify which genre you'd like to compete in(Metal/Alternative/Hard Rock). https://www.facebook.com/CarlingBlackLabelBattleoftheBands/info (Line ups will be updated on the events as soon as it's released) 6 November - https://www.facebook.com/events/173057046232143/?ref=5 13 November -https://www.facebook.com/events/390058637764479/?ref=5 20 November -https://www.facebook.com/events/364748053655120/ 27 November -https://www.facebook.com/events/448572235262645/

Digby and the Lullaby releases debut album: The Somewhere Wind & upcoming shows– There is something undeniably captivating about Digby and the Lullaby. Perhaps it’s their introspective honesty and uncomplicated melodies. Or perhaps it’s the fact that their journey as a singer-songwriter duo swept them off their own feet and down the aisle. Most fans and critics, however, think it’s simply that these two complement each other perfectly. Rouchelle Hubsch (on piano and lead vocals), and Darren Peens (on guitar and backing vocals) have cast their indie-folk spell on mesmerized audiences from Cape Town to New York. Their debut album ‘The Somewhere Wind’ is an independently funded labour of love that took two years to make. Produced in New York by Kieran Kelly, the album features world renowned musicians Rob Calder on bass and Mason Ingram on drums, delicate string arrangements, and South Africa’s own Farryl Purkiss on backing vocals on the track ‘Sweet Starry Night’. “We wanted to make good art,” says Darren. “We wanted to create something that was beautiful.” Rouchelle adds, “It’s an honest album, both sonically and lyrically. We really opened ourselves up and laid our souls bare in a journey that became us, became this album.” Digby and the Lullaby have a flair for intimate performances, and single out the theatre as their favourite venue to play. “Theatres are irresistible” says Rouchelle. “It makes our connection with the audience so real and tangible.”

Upcoming Shows: Fans and indie/folk lovers will be happy to hear that Digby and the Lullaby will be on the road to introduce the album in November. The Somewhere Wind Tour will travel to Cape Town, Durban, PE and Jeffreysbay. Miss something else, don’t miss Digby and the lullaby” – Graham Ward, Drummer – Tom Jones, Paul McCartney. “Haunting, achingly beautiful - at once melancholic and uplifting - music to grab your ears and your heart...highly recommended!" – Lance du Plessis, Algoa FM presenter.

Summit 2013

History of The Blues Summit: Mike Combrinck started the Blues Summit on the 15th November 2006 at the Tafelberg Tavern in Cape Town. This debut of the festival saw the reunion of the Blues Broers for a special summit performance, and with the help of Boulevard Blues, Albert Frost, Dan Patlansky, Delta Blue, Piet Botha and Southern Gypsey Queen, it was a great success. In 2007 Mike entered into negotiation with long time bastion of Blues Rock, Richard Pryor to co-partner him in managing the Blues Summit. Richard 'a solid man of Rock' had an axe to grind and was sharpening his blues pencil to take the summit up a notch. His mandate was a musically successful summit with financial independence. Tapping into his own musical resources, database and Blues Wigi Boards, Richard secured the sponsorship of Combustion Technology to help out financially. Combustion Technology is a Company focused on Energy Efficiency. Their core business is to concentrate on the supply of the most Modern Energy Efficient Equipment Solutions to the Steam, Hot water and Heating Industry. Their goal is a reduction in Emissions and a decrease in Fuel Consumption which results in a more efficient plant and a greatly reduced Carbon footprint. More info at: www.combustiontechnology.co.za Paul Bothner Music joined as a sponsor in 2009 and they have been a mainstay supporter and sponsor ever since. Fender threw some muscle into the event as well by offering a Genuine Fender axe giveaway at every summit.

“Blues is the soul translated into audible form.” Natasha Meister.

“Someone recently pointed out to me that 'the Blues' is the first pan-african music. Slaves from all over Africa had to find a mutual musical idiom to express themselves and be understood by one another. Perhaps that is why blues music speaks to so many people. Blues in its essential state is trance dance music, it is human heart music. It pulses, profane yet sacred, in a world where we have forgotten how to dance." Guy Collins.

No longer were people content to simply hear their favourite musicians, they had to see them too. Now, in a tribute to the incredible culture of music videos that revolutionised the pop music industry and created a new platform for video art, producer Cedric Vandenschrik will perform his new show, “Video Killed the Radio Star” at the GrandWest Roxy Revue Bar every Wednesday to Saturday from 22 November to 11 January 2014.

The talented cast will showcase the years of cutting-edge videos, from the 80s through to the 90s, when creative teams experimented to produce the most unique and memorable video’s, and MTV served as the music video headquarters for the pop music world. To an extent, Video did kill the radio, at least as a way of promoting new music, and the slogan “I want my MTV” was the order of the day throughout the world, even here, on our own SABC! Artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, A-ha, Peter Gabriel, Tina Turner, Cindy Lauper, Dire Straits and so many more all became associated with their videos. Bringing back these performances will be vocalists Riyaan Cornelius and Lee Rath, keyboardists Tracy Johannes and Chad Zerf, who also performs vocals, drummer Adam Coolsaet, bassist Alex Mayers and guitarist Andre Ferreira. Shaun Johannes will supply musical direction. The audience will be treated to a visual and musical feast of catchy hits such as Madonna’s Material Girl, Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer, Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love, Duran Duran’s Wild Boys and Cindy Lauper’s anthem Girls Just Wanna have Fun, to name a few. Table Mountain Blues Summit 2013 Venue: Hillcrest Quarry,Durbanville Dates: 22- 23 November 2013.

“Blues started in Africa as chants in the tribes telling day to day stories and later progressed into songs of woe in the fields as people were enslaved. It was a way of communicating and telling a story, in history and music form. An interesting fact: The raw form of the banjo originated in Africa.” – History of Blues competition entry by Devon Lourens. The Table Mountain Blues Summit 2013 is happening at Hillcrest Quarry on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 November. The Cream of South Africa's Blues- Rock Artists will be taking the stage. To celebrate and trace the roots of Blues in South Africa, the Blues Summit ran a competition in October to trace the history of Blues in South Africa. Blues Summit organiser Richard Pryor announced that the winner of the competition is Lisa Flack. “It was an inclusive and a

well researched report which made very interesting reading considering that there is not much on the history of Blues in SA out there. She also accounted her own very recent introduction to the Blues and is now an avid SA Blues supporter.” Lisa made special mention of some of the bands that kick-started the development of blues in SA in the sixties and the eighties: “Band O’ Gypsies, who were originally formed as the Sasons (South African Sons), are one of the oldest groups in the world. They have been around since the early sixties. Their Hendrix-influenced brand of hard blues-rock has made them very popular at biker rallies. Another band that was quite prominent in the blues scene in the late sixties was The Otis Waygood Blues Band from Salisbury, Rhodesia. They came to Cape Town on a whim in a battered Combi and got a “guest artist” slot at the 1969 Battle of the Bands. They became an overnight sensation for their raw, exciting, stomping blues rock. Other memorables include The Flaming Firestones, which spearheaded the “blues explosion” in Cape Town in the eighties. After the Flaming Firestones disbanded, the Down and Out Blues band was born and when they eventually split up, Rob Nagel and Johnny Frick formed the Blues Broers with Frank Frost on drums and Agent Orange on keyboards. Richard Pryor adds that the Blues really took off in SA in the late eighties after the Blues Broers were formed. The Boulevard Blues Band has also most notably been spreading the Blues Rock Gospel for the past 15 years and have travelled extensively throughout South Africa. They have contributed to the livelihood of the Blues scene in SA, especially in the Western Cape, which is where the Blues is thriving the most. Lisa`s complete competition entry can be viewed here. http://www.bluesfest.co.za/history.html Now in its 8th year with the continued help of main sponsor Combustion Technology and Paul Bothner Music, The Table Mountain Blues Summit has established itself as a top music festival and is ready to hit awesome and epic status in 2013. Featuring some of the finest blues artists in SA over the past 30 years, from the Blues Broers to the new bloods Natasha Meister and Crimson House Blues, the line up for 2013 promises to move your mojo soul:

Friday 22 November – from 16h00 Tombstone Pete, Mean Black Mamba, Robin Gallagher Trio (Fender), Ballistic Blues, Them Tornados, Blues Broers, Pebbleman, Dan Patlansky, Fox Comet. Saturday 23 November – from 12h30

Tombstone Pete, Jo Martin and Tony, Kevin Floyd and Guests, Crimson House Blues, Robin Auld, Natasha Meister, Dave Ferguson, Ann Jangle, Gerald Clark, Albert Frost Trio, Boulevard Blues and Guests, Black Cat Bones.

History of The Blues Summit: Mike Combrinck started the Blues Summit on the 15th November 2006 at the Tafelberg Tavern in Cape Town. This debut of

the festival saw the reunion of the Blues Broers for a special summit performance, and with the help of Boulevard Blues, Albert Frost, Dan Patlansky, Delta Blue, Piet Botha and Southern Gypsey Queen, it was a great success. Ticket sales are open and are available at Computicket: Friday R160 and entry into the Fri Night Combustion Cash Prize Draw. Saturday R220 and entry into the Sat Night Fender Guitar Lucky Draw. The Dan Patlansky Guitar Weekend is a three day event where 30 fellow guitarists and attendees will have the chance to hang out with Dan Patlansky and attend group workshops covering various subjects, including Improvising, Licks and Riffs, Chords and Harmony, and Tone and Gear. The Flying Pickets SPEND AN EARLY CHRISTMAS WITH THE FLYING PICKETS EVENT Christmas with the Flying Pickets DATE Wednesday 20 November 2013 VENUE GrandWest Grand Arena TIME 20h00 TICKETS R295 to R495 BOOKING Computicket The British pop-rock a capella vocal group, The Flying Pickets, will tour South Africa to perform theirChristmas with The Flying Pickets show at GrandWest’s Grand Arena on Wednesday, 20 November 2013. The group first enjoyed worldwide success with their debut single, a cover of a Yazoo songOnly You in 1983. The single went straight to number one in the UK, and soon found popularity in other countries. This early success led the band to produce no less than 14 albums over the years. The Flying Pickets was founded by Brian Hibbard in 1982, together with a group of actors all with strong socialist political convictions. They put together a musical theatre production that told the story of the 1982 miners strike in the UK, and their unusual name refers to mobile strikers of the time who would travel to join pickets in sympathy with the strikers. The group so enjoyed singing that they began to appear in pubs and clubs in London where they found success not only for their vocal ability, but also for their flamboyant appearance. Since those early days they have continued performing, recording and touring around the world. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are available from Computicket from R295 to R495.
