Editors Note
Grunge has always been one of my fave genres of music and we interview awesome Durban based band called Sons of Us. Speaking of Grunge, The boys from Volume Conflict have done us proud by signing with North Atlantic Records, go check out my article all about that. We interview an awesome band called Gage, now they are a cool band in their own right, but it’s probably cool to mention that Jason Horseman from Gage was in an award winning band called Sunways which was made up of ex member of Squeal Robbie Boake. It’s a small world and I just love the connection these three bands have as I am a big fan of all of them and it’s great I get to interview someone who was in Sunways. But this interview isn’t about past bands, we are now speaking of Gage and you can go check out their cool interview, very cool stuff. Stone Jets is a cool new band making big air waves in the industry, and I must say they’re a cool bunch of guys. Go check out their interview. Last but not least, I interview Dan Patlansky, who is not only making a huge name for himself, and hosting a 30 guitarist event workshop. He has also been selected to open up for “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen. We chat about all that and more, so go have a looksee. The Full Metal panic have been just as busy and they feature some awesome metal acts, namely Autrum Regina, Raptorbaby and Some day Rush. So go check it out Our Togger of the Month is such an awesome photographer, I sommer sent her to cover a gig for Fanbase Music Magazine, it turns out she doesn’t just do photography, but she is an awesome gig reviewer as well. So check out her work in Togger of the month, and also check out her gig review for The Dave Matthews Band, who visited our shores this month. We will defo be using Danni Vlademirovka Lombard and Vlademirovka photography to cover more of our future events. Speaking of adding new people to our team, I would like to officially welcome Rene Maritz to the Fanbase family. She will be doing gig reviews and interviews in and around Cape Town. You can check out some of her work in her new section called “Soul Sessions” Well that’s all folks. It’s been a great year and we would like to thank you for all your support. We will see you in the New Year. I would just like to take this opportunity to thank the whole Fanbase Team, who is the real reason there is a mag every month, you all Rock big time. Peace out Duzzy

COLOUR ME KACEY A few months back you would remember we held a Battle of the bands at Crossroads, where some awesome bands took to the stage to battle it out for a front cover feature in Fanbase Music Magazine and a free Photoshoot with Twisted Puppy photography. Well I am happy to say we have the winners of that event in this month’s issue of Fanbase Music Magazine. Ladies and Gentleman I give to you, Colour Me Kacey. Hi guys first of all thank you for featuring in Fanbase and well done on winning the Battle of the bands, before we get to all that, let’s find out more about the band, Where did it all start for Colour Me Kacey? Thank you guys so much for giving us this opportunity! It started back in 2012 for us. Kelly, Jess and Nicole were in another all-girl band called Saving Insanity. A while after Saving Insanity broke up, Kelly, Jess and Nicole decided to get back into things with a new project. Candice joined as the lead guitarist and Larissa came along in January this year when our previous drummer left to pursue other interests. Can you tell us a little something about each member of the band? Jess is a SAMA nominee. She was nominated for best album in the pop category in 2009. Candice is super talented at all things design. She’s the brains behind all of our design work, logos, Facebook event banners, etc. Larissa is a drummer, shame. Kelly is the engine in this band. She’s our gig manager and has landed us some super cool gigs throughout the year. She’s great at networking and knows all the right people. Nicole spent about 6 months working on the ships, back in 2010. She has the most amazing stories about her travels and her experience will come in handy when we eventually start to gig in other countries (yes, we have big plans!).
What kind of Genre would you classify your music in? Ah, remember the days when defining a genre was simple? Now we have progressive electro pop-core! Having said that, our music probably fits best in the good ol’ pop-rock genre. Who is the Songwriter in the band and where do you your inspiration from? Songwriting is always a group effort. Inspiration comes from whatever is going on in our lives at the moment. Musically, we’re influenced by bands like Paramore, You Me At Six, Flyleaf, etc. Can you tell us how a “Colour Me Kacey” song is put together, from the time the riffs, drums and vocals get put together and a song is then made, is there a procedure the band follows to put a song together? It usually starts with a riff and then we all work together to build it into a song. There’s no sequence for us – sometimes we start with the bridge and write the intro last. Jess writes the melody and lyrics for the most part, but we all give input into that too, from time to time. Can you name some of the bands best achievements? We’ve been very privileged to play some amazing gigs this year. In September we got voted in to play a slot at Pinkie Fest, alongside bands like Flo, Jeremy Loops, The Graeme Watkins Project, Lonehill Estate and Chiano Sky. In October, we got to open for Van Coke Kartel at their album launch. We also released our first single this year, which was a big milestone for us as a band.
Can you explain a “Colour Me Kacey” gig to us, if we have never been to one of your gigs what can we expect? We love playing gigs and we always have so much fun. You can expect five girls on stage, playing their hearts out and having the best time on stage together. We always hope that our energy flows into the crowd and makes them feel as happy as what we do on stage! With you being an all-girl band, do you find the music industry and the crowd treat you differently compared to how they treat male bands? Sadly, yes. As far as bands go, it’s a male-dominated industry. We do have some solid representation out there (all-girl bands like Cortina Whiplash, Junkyard Lipstick, Japan and I, and Saarkie) but it’s not nearly enough. Female musicians in general are hard to come by, let alone all-girl bands! We do our best to avoid the all-girl band cliché but unfortunately it tends to precede us. The ‘cliché’ being the opinion that we do this because being an all-girl band is a novelty, and not because we have an irrepressible passion for music. It almost feels as though we’re required to do a little extra in order to prove ourselves. But… we don’t mind, we’re always up for a challenge! ;) Okay let’s talk about the Battle of the bands, once again well done on that, how did you feel about winning the competition especially competing against such awesome talent? We were so stoked to win this. It was our first gig of the year and our first with our new drummer, Larissa. We battled it out with some quality bands, so we were really pleased with the results. Is this your first battle of the bands you competed in or have you played in other competition as well? It was the first battle for 2013. We played a few battles towards the end of 2012 as well. When you preparing for a battle, do you put more effort into band practices when you approach a gig like this? We treat all of our gigs the same, and prepare equally as hard for battles as what we do for any other gig. Sometimes our strategy changes a little, because we have judges to impress, but hard work and solid practice is always a given factor.

“Songwriting is always a group effort. Inspiration comes from whatever is going on in our lives at the moment”
Lastly do you have any social Medias we can follow? We’re on Facebook, Twitter (@ColourMeKacey), SoundCloud and ReverbNation. We also have a blog, where we write about all of the things happening in the band. Check it out at colourmekacey.blogspot.com. Where will you be playing in the month of December or the new Year? We have two gigs left for the year, and these are both battles. We’re playing the finals of the Rock and Acoustic Sundays on the 1st of December and the finals for the Battle For Rumours on the 7th of December. We don’t have any gigs planned for the new year as yet, but we have a gig guide on our blog that is always up to date. Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last messages for your fans and the readers? We’d like to take the opportunity to thank our fans for their loyalty and continuous support this year. It’s been a big year for us and it’s because of all of you. We can’t wait for the big things of 2014!

Stone Jets
“A punch of energy with sound pockets filled with fun and lyric creativity
The journey started simply as being at the wrong place in the right time. Given and Manfred met at a recording session in Cape Town, where they collaborated together on music while Given was visiting from Joburg, from that day the seed started growing. Given moved down to Cape Town, forces were joined with Manfred who is a native Capetonian. The name Stone Jets encompasses the fusion of this duo's musical and social background. Together, they form an Acoustic Folk Rock style that has its fingers in a lot of pies... However one thing is certain, their live performances are a sight to see and a sound to be consumed by. With all said and done, it remains all about the music.
Hi guys thank you for doing this interview with Fanbase Music Magazine. Let’s start from the beginning, where did it all start for Stone Jets? We met at a recording session and we had a chat about the music ideologies that we share and Given who at the time were working in Johannesburg, decided to move to Cape Town and that's when we started Can you tell us something about each member of the band? Manfred is the outspoken one even though he is shy and very soft Given is the shy one although one might not think so
What are some of your rituals before a gig? Cutting a goats head off, haha. No. I(Given) drink a lot of water for my voice. Manfred drinks beer for his nerves. Then I wait for Manfred to walk onto the stage cause I get all nerved up hehe. How can people get hold of you, do you have any social networks that we can join? We are active on most social sites. See the links below: Facebook : www.facebook.com/STONEJETSMUSIC Twitter : www.twitter.com/STONEJETS @stonejets
What genre of music would you describe your sound?
Reverbnation : www.reverbnation.com/stonejets
Our sound is more alternative Indie. With influences from The Beatles, Eagles and some Tracy Chapman
Soundcloud : www.soundcloud.com/stone-jets-music
Stone Jets is an interesting band name; can you tell us how that band name came about? Deadlines haha. After 3 months we didn't have a name and Stone Jets was the only good one we had. It grew on us. Now it forms part of the music we make. Who is the songwriter in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? We do the songwriting together. Some days Manfred can come up with a riff and Given can supplement it with a melody. But most songs are written together at weird and awkward times haha. Everyday chaos in life inspires the songs. Can you tell us the process of putting a Stone Jets song together, from the start to finish, how does the band make up a song?
Do you have any sites where we can listen to your music? Yes we do, on our Soundcloud page we put up 3 songs from our 5 track EP called River. We also have it loaded on iTunes, Soundcloud, Reverbnation, AmazonMp3 and many other digital stores. Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last messages for your fans and the readers? A million thanks to the folks who come check us out when we have gigs, the venues that are willing to give us a chance and everyone who has bought our EP - River on iTunes and the other stores. And a big thanks to Fanbase Music Magazine for the interview. Our physical CD will be out in January 2014 and available at our shows.
Manfred can come up with a riff and Given can supplement it with a melody The Lyrics are written as we fine tune the melody and chords. Which all happens at the same time. If we have never been to one of you live gigs, what could we expect ? A punch of energy with sound pockets filled with fun and lyric creativity. We are a fun bunch and like interacting with the folks. As nervous as we get, after the first note, we feel at home and start making magic. Do you still get nervous before a gig? Every time. It makes us want to be better. Interview by: Duwyne Clayton Photography by: Cecilia Knowles Photography
Hi guys thank you for doing this interview, let’s start from the beginning, what is the story behind the band “GAGE” Hi Duwyne, thanks for having us. GAGE is a three piece rock band from Kimberley that was formed in 2007. After I (Jason) left the SAMA award winning band Sunways, I decided it was high time to pursue my dream and start my own band. The road has been long and winding since the early days with members leaving the band and the ongoing battle for funds to produce our first album. After hundreds of gigs and sales pitches to investors, we eventually got to release our debut album titled “Empty Spaces” produced by Peter Pearlson in 2010 and very recently released our second album titled “Break the Silence”.
Can you tell us something about each member of the band? Jason Horseman – Lead Vocals and Drums Llewellyn Burger – Guitar and Backing Vocals Russel Nathanson – Bass and Backing Vocals Jason and Russel grew up together and have been jamming in various bands since primary school. Jason and Lyle met a couple of years ago when Lyle approached Jason for guitar lessons. A few years later Jason asked the guys to join and they have been rocking ever since. Jason is the loud and persistent one, always hammering the guys to be on time for rehearsal. Lyle is the joker – always making funny voices and keeping the mood light. Russel is more of the silent type – the dependable guy that is always willing to help cart the gear up and down. Together they make for an interesting (and very loud) three piece! What genre of music would you classify your music in? Rock, definitely rock! Who is the songwriter in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? That will be Jason. I draw my inspiration from the people in my life; the varied emotions gained and lost from relationships past and present and the difficulties you sometimes experience in your journey towards personal growth.
What is the process of putting a “Gage” song together, from the Riff, to the drums, to the lyrics, how is a “Gage” a song put together? It normally starts with a riff that I record and listen to a hundred times (jokes) over. You can ask my fiancé, she probably gets fed up with the songs way before they are released as she has to listen to it that often. After the riff come the bass line and the drums. You won’t believe it, but my entire second albums’ ideas have all been recorded on an old hi-fi tape deck. It is a long and tedious process at times, but the results speak for it selves. All my ideas are then converted to mp3s and emailed to our producer in JHB, Theo Janse van Rensburg at The O Studio. Many emails, phone calls and trips to JHB later I wait in anticipation for the phone call from Theo telling me that he has sent me the first copy of one of the songs. It’s like being a kid on Xmas morning waiting to tear open your gift from Santa!
If we have never been to one of your gigs, what could we expect if we were to attend a “Gage” gig? High volume, explosive energy and awesome rocking! We dig it when the crowd interacts with the band and sings along to our songs. There is not a more awesome feeling than seeing your fans dance to your music and belting out the lyrics at the top of their lungs! Do you get nervous when you get on stage? Our nerves were shot with the first couple of gigs, but the more we play the more confident we become. I suppose we’ll always have a bit of excitement-nervousness jitters as it keeps us on our toes! Every gig is different and you don’t really always know what to expect from the crowd. I guess the worst kind of nerves come into play when you perform on live TV; we had two performances recently on Sunrise and Morning Live that had us all wired!
You have just finished putting a music video together; can you explain to the readers, what is the song called? We did a music video for “All that I am” taken from our second album titled “Break the Silence” What was the inspiration behind this music video? We decided against the run of the mill boy meets girl kind of music video. We wanted the focus to be on the band and our hometown Kimberley. We opted for the black and white, almost grainy vibe to make the music video look oldfashioned as inspired from the scenes taken from the train station.
You have been working on a DVD, can you tell us more about it, what kind of DVD is it, where was it filmed and how many songs etc are on the DVD? We filmed a live DVD for gage! The DVD was filmed at the bighole driving range in Kimberley! We really wanted to capture the raw live energy of the band and the intimate vibe with the audience! We had 250 people atthe gig and it was great hearing them all sing along to our originals! The DVD will have about 9 songs on including a music video for all that I am and some footage of the crowd and interviews with them! Where and when can people get the DVD?
How long did it take to make the music video? It felt like forever! LOL! We shot different scenes at different locations at different times. I think all in all including the editing more or less two weeks. You have just released your second album, what can you tell us about it, what is it called and which record label is the album done through? Our second album is titled “Break the Silence” and was released through Sting Music. The album was produced by The O Studio in JHB by super talented Theo Janse van Rensburg who also played bass and guitar on the album. The album boasts eleven superior rock songs suited to everyone’s mood. The songs will take you on a musical journey from a slow relaxed vibe to a high tempo adrenalin rush! The lyrics are candid and eloquent; everyone will be able to relate to the raw emotional presence in every track.
We still have a lot of editing to do, probably in the next 3 months or so! But watch our social media for more info. Thank you for doing this interview, how can people get hold of you, do you have any social Media Links? Only a pleasure! People can contact us via Facebook and our website at www.gage.co.za
Do you have any last messages for your fans and the readers? Definitely! Never ever give up on your dreams! Persist until the point of becoming annoying and don’t heed negative feedback. Surround yourself with positive people that share your vision and that can keep you grounded and true to yourself. Don’t lose focus no matter how difficult the road ahead seems – success might just be around the next corner or over the next hill!
“Never, never give up on your dreams! Persist until the point of becoming annoying”
Volume Conflict Sign with overseas record label North Atlantic Records Article Done by Duwyne Clayton Photography Done by Tiandi Van Niekerk As I write this article, I am sitting in the waiting room of a government hospital, waiting to see the doctor. Trying to pass the time, and trying to find inspiration on what to write for this article I decide to put on a bit of Volume Conflict on my computer media player. You can’t help but turn this band’s music up loud. These patients waiting in the waiting room with me are going to listen to Volume Conflict whether they like it or not hehe This band just keeps going from strength to strength and I just knew it was just a matter of time till this awesome grunge band from South Africa signs with a Record label. Volume Conflict is no strangers to Fanbase Music Magazine but for our readers who haven’t heard of VC yet, let’s start from the beginning. Volume Conflict is a grunge band from South Africa, made up of three brothers Triston Smith (Vocals, guitar) Stitch Bass (Bass, backing vocals) Lee Smith (drums) and then Snowy Loveless( on lead guitar) who joined the band in 2012. One of the hardest working bands in South Africa.and now signed to a major label called North Atlantic Records. North Atlantic Records is a new up and coming Record Label from Ireland who specifically signs new grunge bands such as Volume Conflict. Because they are situated in Ireland, Volume Conflict’s plan is to move to Ireland early next year to be near the record label and to tour the Europe scene and break it there. I have always said Volume conflict is going to be the next big thing to come out of South Africa and now the band has their chance to prove just that. Their lives are about to change for the better as they do what they love and become the huge stars they deserve to be, but it’s not going to be all plain sailing now, because this is where the hard work really starts. One of the world’s hardest working bands are about to work even harder to achieve what they set out to do, but you know what? I kind of have so much faith in this band that they are going to achieve greatness and more. It is a pity though that they have to move out of South Africa to make all this happen, but the truth is, there ‘s just more opportunities overseas and Volume Conflict is going to grab those opportunities with both hands and in doing so will probably help get South African Music on the map.
There is just so much excitement in the air as the build up takes place for all this to get in motion. All I can say is 2014 is going to be Volume Conflict’s year and the start of something great. Ladies and Gentleman, watch out for this band. Mark my words!!! So here I am in the hospital waiting room and the line hasn’t moved much, and I am now on a track called Breathe from Volume Conflict’s demo EP called Pixels., which I must mention, “Pixels” is now available for FREE download on Soundlcoud and Reverbnation. You can catch Volume Conflict for their last performance for 2013 when they play at WILDKEI MUSIC FESTIVAL , WILDKEI MUSIC FESTIVAL is going to take place for the 4th time, growing year by year into a house hold name, the place to be if you are a student, sweaty teenager or old school heavy. THE EVENT IS ON THE 14TH OF DECEMBER 2013 After the bands last gig they will then start the recordings early next year for their up and coming album which is going to be called Strawman. I so can’t wait to hear this new album. It’s going to be EPIC. Fanbase Music Magazine will be doing an EXCLUSIVE interview with Volume Conflict early next year just before they jet off on this big adventure. Watch out for that because its an interview you would not want to miss.

T&C DURBAN VIBES BY: Tania Meyer Chantell vd Walt
shooter, and then last we have Jarred our full force drummer that doesn't skip a beat, who livened up just shy after Three Beers. Asking the band what their highlight for the band was thus far ,and where would they love to be. They told us about the recording of their EP, how amazing that was and of course to make more records. I'm telling you readers if you haven't heard or seen this band live, please check out Youtube, Soundcloud and Reverbnation, you will finds Minority for the masses there so have a listen, watch and feel there music come alive in your soul. One of my favorite music video is Hair of the dog, these boys went wild, and there is an actual behind the scene footage where they truly did get wasted then filmed the music video the next day and it’s a must see. Check them out at their next EP launch, Heart of music presents: Minority For The Masses EP Tour Saturday, December 21 at 7:00pm Rumours Lounge - Bar - Restaurant in Johannesburg, Gauteng so if you are there please support this band as they truly enjoy what they’re doing and the music they make. A little road trip to Pietermarizburg in the rain, mist and traffic to meet up with a great band. It gives me great pleasure to introduce a fairly new and upcoming Classic/ punk/alternative/rock four piece Band, Minority for the masses!!! Picture this, we are all punked up to the masses sitting around this table in this little cafe, Quenches and having a chat to this self-made band, who started off about two years ago. Jon and Jake are born and bred best mates and have grown up together playing music. Matt and Jarred make this band a full four piece band with two lead vocals to keep everyone interested in the dynamic duo of vocal changes, the whole band stands together to make their music so freaking epic. Team work bro.. They all add their own to the music written to make it a universal sound. A must hear for all Be sure to vote for Minority for the masses to jam at next year’s Splashy fen 2014, by logging onto their web site and liking their page and vote for them to play, they are currently Number 6 on the list. (at time of print) The band members are: Jon Perry (Guitars,Vocals) Jake Blackwell (Guitars,Vocals) Matthew Baxter (Bass,Backing Vocals) Jarred Baney (Drums) Now let’s start with the dirty works. Whilst we sitting and sipping on our drinks we are getting to know each member and their little perks, Jon who owns a Potato farm in Underberg, where these boys do their rehearsals and one of their music videos was made, Jake who is a rep, and I think this little ball of lighting keeps this band on their toes. Matt my man who has the biggest tattoo ever, seems like the charmer of the lot, charms all their fans with their Tequila Destroyers
We were promised by Jake that he would provide us with a signed EP, Yes their first one, Hair of the dog, and boy I can’t wait to get my hands on it. I'm dying to put it in my car radio and listen. I did mention on our tweet on the night we met Minority that we would go check out the venue Red Door, but unfortunately it wasn't possible, so this is where we ended up and I would like to give a huge thank you to The Keg and Hedgehog’s where Lindy Bentley and Robyn Ryan kept the place open so we could finish our interview with the now famous Minority for the masses. Thank you for staying open just for us. Just before I close this article here it is from the horses mouth.
Minority For The Masses is a band that hails from the Kwazulu Natal province of South Africa. Formed in the beginning of 2011 consisting of Jon Perry ( Guitar / Vocals ) , Jake Blackwell ( Guitar / Vocals ) Matthew Baxter ( Bass / Backing Vocals ) and Jarred Baney ( Drums ) .Theit name comes from a general feeling amongst the band that there is a hell of a lot of good rock music out there that isn’t exposed to the general masses of the world. What happened to the days of taking risks and living on the edge, of going out to your local rock club regardless of who you are and where you come from, enjoying music that is the very spirit and sound board for the agony’s and ecstasy’s of life and youth. Well that is what this band is all about, trying to revive that very instinct that lies in all of us! Work hard- play hard, reap what you sow, life isn’t fair, the big wheel turns, party like a rock star and kick a little ass! Are common themes in their song writing. By taking these four individuals and combining their talents together to become a tornado of sound and energy, being released upon an unsuspecting world, I suppose only time will tell how far this storm of Rock will Rage!

Interview by: Duwyne Clayton
I grew up on grunge so it is always going to be my fave point of genre when it comes to featuring bands and music I love, and to be honest there hasn’t been much grunge bands since around since that era supposedly died in the 90’s. But bands like Seether, Volume Conflict and Very Ape have helped keep that genre alive and well. But now there is a new band on the horizon right out of Durban who is also helping keep the grunge scene alive. I am talking about none other than Sons of Us. Proving that grunge is not dead. Enjoy the interview.
Hi guys first of all thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music Magazine, Can you tell us where did it all start as a band, what is the story behind Sons of Us ? Sons of Us are a socially conscious 3 piece rock band from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa who draw their influences from the 90's post-grunge/alternative rock era. In using poetic lyrics and thought-provoking messages it is their hope to invoke social, spiritual & political awareness. The band had its 1st practice on 29 November 2011. We have gone through 2 lineup changes, our founding bass guitarist Andrew Radue (now bass guitarist for Durban old school metal band Dread) and lead guitarist Luke Wyngaard (professional session guitarist and sound engineer at Sleepy Hollow Studios) left after our EP launch late 2012, Andrews position was filled by Mickhyl Franks in early 2013 who later ended up leaving due to personal reasons, he was then replaced by current bass guitarist Warrick Lunn who also fronts for blues rock band Super Llama. In late 2012 after much struggle we managed to get a 3 song EP together. Our sound has changed ALLOT since then as we have gone from our 4 piece post-grunge/classic rock sound with the 1st line up to now being 3 piece with a mix of grunge, punk rock and rap metal.. or in simpler terms Alternative Rock. What genre of music would you classify yourself in? Alternative Rock Can you name some bands that have influenced “Son of us”? Pearl, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Megadeth, Seether, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, Silverchair, Skunk Anansie, Mudhoney, Green River, Pearl Jam, Temple of The Dog, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Rage Against The Machine, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Institute, Bush, Grammatrain, Blindside, Project 86, P.O.D., Switchfoot, Marcy Playground, Pixies, Social Distortion & The Offspring. Can you tell us a bit of each member of the band? Quinton Tarr – Lead Singer, Song Writer, Guitarist Quinton Robert Tarr Favorite color: Black Favorite Bands: Pearl Jam & MxPx Born: 25 June 1985 Left school early to pursue music full-time. Divorced Only time I enjoy crowds is when I'm on stage in front of them.
Warrick Lunn – Bass Guitarist, Backing Vocalist Warrick-AKA- Drama Llama Born- Uncertain of age, date of birth and gender. Pietermaritzburg I am a born and bred PMB lad, with a dream of moving awayfar away. Very far, in fact. Anyway, I had a very standard upbringing and childhood, and was never without thanks to the hard work put in by my fantastically odd parents (Love you Mom and Dad!). They gave me the tools I needed- such as lifeto live. Unlike Chris and Quinton, I actually really enjoyed school, because I was given no other choice. If you know what I mean. My musical interest has been with me for as long as I remember - most of my family is musical, so I’ve always been around peeps with a passion for it. I went to piano lessons for about a year and a half when I was in junior school, but then stopped because it wasn’t “cool”. Typical kid. I picked it up again in grade 10, this time teaching myself. That’s when my passion for music became a main drive for me. I picked up guitar at the end of my grade 11 year, and found that my passion actually was with guitar. I find it to be the instrument that I connect with most emotionally. I only picked up bass guitar this year, which is why I was really surprised when Chris offered me the spot in the band. My musical influences lie mostly in the blues, funk and classic rock genres, but with a bit of a swing element to some. I’ve recently grown more interest in the simple beauty that grunge has to offer us though. I’ve always been more of an academic, and went to university in an attempt to become a Neuro-Psychologist. I then, earlier on this year, thought “Screw that, I want to try make a living doing music”, and things have been going right for me ever since. So I’m actually still very new in the live music industry. But I love it. I work at Tembaletu Trust as a guitar teacher for people over 18 who haven’t had the opportunity financially to go through the process of learning a musical instrument. My class is awesome, and really talented. I also work part-time at Marshalls with Chris, so aside from that calamity Marshalls is an awesome place to work at, and I consider all the employees there to be friends of mine, except for Chris. Sorry to break it to you this way bro. Favorite Color - Green Favorite food- Hamburger.... Favorite Animal- Wolves and Sloths Motto- Follow the yellow-brick road. Regrets- Eating a real granadilla. It put me off granadilla juice. I used to love that shit. Religion- Christian (I do not believe in the patron Saint Mustachio)

Who is the songwriter in the band where do you get your inspiration from? – Quinton Tarr “yeah basically just personal experiences, poetry, art, the world, good and bad things around me, pretty much whatever I take in, even other people's experiences when I get pulled in by their sadness, joy, confusion, anger etc.” - Quinton Can you tell us how a “Sons of us” Song comes together, from the time the riffs, drums and vocals get put together and a song is then made, is there a procedure the band follows to put a song together? – “well I usually just bring the songs I've written with a basic structure and we fine tweak it together, some songs take 2 or 3 practices but most just take one, I'm really blessed to be in a band with such excellent musicians.” - Quinton If we have never seen your band play live before, what can we expect a “Son of Us” gig? “We hope energy but yeah we just pretty much aim to rock out and have as much fun as we can.” - Quinton Do you still get nervous before a gig? – Chris - Nah not nervous just good old butterfly-excitement Warrick - Hell yeah.... Quinton: Yeah allot, sometimes I feel like hurling and sometimes I just get a bit shaky Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? – Warrick - I commune with Mother Nature in order to relax my mind beforehand. Quinton - Some stretches maybe, try to calm down, get in to the right head space Chris - Nah no rituals just chill and Zen out stretch and warm up and get ready to rock

Last week Friday I got the chance to attend Lira's long awaited First Decade Concert. She is one of South Africa's well acclaimed musicians. I am a die-hard fan, always have been and always will be. oooohhhhhhh it was so exciting, it felt like I was going burst with happiness!! When the lights went on and The Love Band started playing....I got up and started singing along...to each and every song... It truly has been a decade of songs for Lira, as she sang songs from all her previous albums and The Band got to do solos which I always enjoy to watch!!! Being the lady that she is, she invited a few friends over to share the stage with. R.J Benjamin sat down with her on stage while they sang a song that was written by him called "Iris" (by the way Lira has written all her songs on her albums except for Iris and Something inside so strong). Another friend that came on was Sipho "Hotstix" Mabuse, now we all know that he is a LEGEND!!! They did a rendition of "Hamba" which blew the crowd away!!! Whooo I get goose bumps when I think about it, it was incredible! But that wasn't all, she also brought out Tswana and Zulu dancers. Ahhh what a show!!! Now, you would think it ended there rite? Lol, nope she stood there and showed some love to her husband it was so beautiful and touching. After all that love going around she did the song that made people cry, "something inside so strong", whooo I swear if we were outside the whole country would have heard us singing along to that powerful song!! Gosh can I please go back to that Friday? I love that woman so much, she's an inspiration and she is adored by many! All that's left is for us to meet:-) Lerato Mohlala for Fanbase Music!! (I'm gonna go watch a Lira dvd)

Dave Matthew Band LIVE in South –Africa, something so many people were waiting for, and a band some people don’t even know of. How one can’t know of such an amazing act still baffles my mind. A band that has sold 37 million CD’s and DVD’s, ranking as North America’s biggest selling act of the decade (2000 – 2010). With their latest album “Away From The World” debuting at No1 on the Billboard chart, they also became the first group in history to have six consecutive albums to debut No1 on said chart. Not just that, but they are also the decades highest earning live act, merely by the fact that their tickets are far more affordable than many comparably sized bands.

Formed in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA in 1991, this unusual band, a blend of acoustic- based rock, along with folk, jazz and blues instruments, soon took over the Rock ‘n Roll mainstream. They now also have their own charity organization, the BAMA works fund, with which their philanthropic efforts have donated over $8.5 million to the needs of disadvantaged youth, disabled persons, the environment, and arts in the city of Charlottesville, Virginia. The band itself is such a unique group of musicians in their own right… Boyd Tinsley, on Violin, who “stumbled” into playing this instrument, by signing up for middle school string class, hoping to learn the guitar, to find out it was for orchestral instruments. Carter Beauford, on drums, who has been playing from the early age of 3, an amazing drummer, who effortlessly plays his instrument. He played his first gig at age 9. Founder and Front man, Dave Matthews, who took piano lessons as a child, before tackling the guitar at age 9. Bassist, Steffan Lessard, who was approached by Dave Matthews to join the band at age 16. Jeff Coffin, an internationally recognized saxophonist and composer, three time Grammy Award winner, who officially joined the band in 2009. Roshawn Ross, my first thought when I saw this man walk on stage “giant”, and yet he seemed so humble. He started his musical journey in St Thomas, Virgin Islands. Working in genres such as rock, jazz, hip hop and country. His musical skills are jaw dropping, he really is a gem. Tim Raynolds, on electric, often featured in music magazines, he’s been playing music all his life. With influences such as Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana and the great Led Zeppelin, this man truly is a musical genius, with riffs and solo’s that makes your heart stop and crowds go silent. Now that the facts and history is done… Here is my personal experience of having the opportunity to see this amazing band perform live, for the first time, in SA. Arriving at the Coco Cola Dome, with crowds of people standing queue to get to their spot and see this amazing act live. So many different people, from young to old. I stood by box office waiting for my press pass thinking ‘’what must I expect’’ ‘’what is this going to be like’’. Eventually press pass in hand, I was taken to what we call ‘the pit’, yes it’s that small space between the Golden Circle barrier and the actual stage, a spot many people would sell their souls to be in. With the Dome rapidly filling up I was in complete awe to see the great Vusi Mahlasela on stage, performing as the opening act. An award winning musician, performing songs about the great Apartheid Struggle, having the crowd cheer for him when he spoke about ‘Ubuntu’, and how we as Africans must fight for our ‘voice’. His recently released album, ‘Say Africa’, makes you proud to be a soul who has the privilege of occupying ‘your spot’ on this great continent. Vusi’s opening set was as amazing as he is; he’s a, musical icon who has inspired millions of people. After taking my 400 odd pictures of this African icon and the idea of a review hanging over my head, I decided to talk to some of the people in the front row, to see what these Dave Matthews Band fans are about. There I met two guys, who follow DMB around the world; they go to every show on almost every tour, with special passes sent to them by the man himself. A young girl in her early 20’s who only attended because DMB was her father’s favorite band, who sadly passed away 7 years ago. As I said so many different people, from so many different ‘spots’ in society. When Vusi’s set was done, we had a 15minute wait, and as I hustled to reserve my spot center stage, on came the man himself, Dave Matthews, the dome started roaring, almost bursting out of its seams. Opening up with ‘Too Much’, we had the first 3 songs to take our million dollar shots. I still can’t figure out which part was the best, standing 2 meters away from one of the greatest bands or experiencing a packed audience’s reaction to this amazing band. After leaving the pit, I pursued the mission of trying to find my friends, soaking up the atmosphere from the crowd. After a long search, a pit stop at the bar and a few strange encounters, I found my friends. Standing behind the sound desk, in general standing, onto stage came one of the greatest musicians this world has ever seen, the legendary, Hugh Masakela. “Proud Monkey” was the first of two songs he performed with DMB on the evening, I want sure if I should cry or cheer…

The show went on with Vusi doing collaborations with DMB, and the crowd loudly singing with to Jimmy Thing, and then as quickly as it started, the realization of ‘’shows over’’ was almost saddening. A full crowd started chanting ‘Dave Matthews Band’ over and over again, and back on stage they came for their encore set. Starting with ‘Sugar Man’, me being a Rodriguez fan myself, and knowing what the song is all about, would say this was for me personally the best moment of the whole show. A fully packed Coco Cola Dome joining this band, singing with…. Goosebumps, Goosebumps, Goosebumps. All I can say is for their first tour in South-Africa, this band has really ‘brought it’, an amazing show both visually and musically, legendary guest artists and the greatest fans. Today I sit here writing my review humbled by the experience of seeing ‘DAVE MATTHEWS BAND’ live.
Every so often the good people at Just Music records, hold a Just music sessions event where they introduce the new talent that has signed with them.

The bands in question this month were: Yesterday's Pupil – the multi-talented artist and producer, Peach van Pletzen’s solo project, Yesterday’s Pupil, have just released a new album called the Formative Years featuring the new single 'December' and the Top 40 single 'Talk Like Stones'. Bye Beneco – this Johannesburg based band describe their sound as "raw, organic, dreamy, ambient, ethereal with an underlying gypsy folk, dark blues spirit" They will be releasing their debut EP in December and their debut album in the first half of 2014. Van T – Capetonian singer-songwriter Chantel van T is busy working with producer Matthew Fink (Nakhane Toure/Matthew Mole/Shadowclub) on her debut EP which will be released in December followed by her album in early 2014. Irmaos de Deus – this Deep House DJ and Producer duo are releasing compilations for the legendary Ministry of Sound and Toolroom labels this Christmas and will be releasing their own debut studio album in early 2014. Everyone in the venue upon arrival was excited and ready for an evening of good music and fun times with friends. This crowd was eager to enjoy their night because of a common love of live music – not really bothered with fitting in with any specific ‘crowd’. What makes Just Music events so unique and enjoyable is that they showcase different artists and talents, in a line up at each event that is varied enough that they expose their talent to different crowds/ audiences. Most people usually stick to a specific genre they like when attending live performances, so when they attend Just Music gigs they find other bands or acts that they enjoy and will continue to follow – something they wouldn’t have listened to out of their own. These events showcase new talent across genres and are intimate enough that it feels as though they could be playing in your lounge or on your car radio. What I like about these events are the beginning of big things for these bands. They have the backing of a reputable company whilst having the comfort of a smaller more intimate venue to start their careers with. Luckily they aren’t thrust into a massive stadium as simply a support act, but they get to headline the gig and build a fanbase from the start. I feel Just Music really makes these sessions about the bands and their talent. With these kinds of events they are at least finding their own audience, not trying to compete or poach a bigger bands following. The most exciting part of the evening was discovering new artists that may have slipped under the radar. Definitely have a number of new bands to watch, and some old favorites like Yesterday’s Pupil who have previously featured in Fanbase Mag in Issue 12. It is good to know we here at Fanbase have an eye for talent! We will have to do a follow up interview and catch up on what seems to have been a very interesting year for the guys. Not to mention keeping an ear out for the other bands that caught our attention. Van T is an exciting band to look out for, with their unique sound they are defiantly bringing something new and hip to the music industry. The other two acts of the night Bye Beneco and Irmaos de Deus are just as good and really helped to get the party going and rocking. I would recommend to everyone reading this review to check these bands out and if they playing in your area then go give them your support. You won’t be disappointed. We would like to thank Just Music records for signing these awesome talents and introducing them to us. We look forward to the next Just Music sessions and you can bet your ass, Fanbase Music Magazine will be right there to support

“and in other news” Lostprophets release statement on singer Ian Watkins’ guilty plea for child sex crimes I don’t like reporting on gossip and I hope this article doesn’t come across as such. Even though the topic at hand is disgusting and crazy to say the least, we hope the readers of Fanbase can see the reason of why I write this article as it has become a topic on the social medias if the rest of the band knew about their lead singer’s doings. It’s probably old news that Lost Prophets lead singer has “Pleaded guilty” for child sex crimes”, a statement has been issued by the remaining members of the band stating their views about this topic. About 10 months after Watkins was first arrested on sex crime charges, Lostprophets officially announced their breakup. After 16 years of existence, Lostprophets were forced to end their career in the most horrific of ways. The only immediate response to Watkins’ guilty plea from Lostprophets was given by guitarist Lee Gaze, who simply tweeted, “That was over quick. Thank f—,” followed by, “Thanks for the kind words. At least there is closure now.” On Nov. 30, Watkins’ former bandmates issued the following statement via Facebook: “Earlier this week, we learned that the allegations of child sexual abuse against Ian were true, and that he would not be contesting them in court. Until then, we found them extremely difficult to believe and had hoped it was all a mistake. Sadly, the true extent of his appalling behavior is now impossible to deny. Many of you understandably want to know if we knew what Ian was doing. To be clear: We did not. We knew that Ian was a difficult character. Our personal relationships with him had deteriorated in recent years to a point that working together was a constant, miserable challenge. But despite his battles with drugs, his egotistic behavior, and the resulting fractures and frustrations within our band, we never imagined him capable of behavior of the type he has now admitted. We are heartbroken, angry, and disgusted at what has been revealed. This is something that will haunt us for the rest of our lives. Being in a band has always been a labor of love and a platform to inspire people, not to take advantage of them. It’s still hard to believe this is happening and that someone we were once so close to has destroyed so many lives, lying every step of the way. Our hearts go out to Ian’s family, the fans and friends he betrayed, and most importantly, the victims of his crimes and others like them. We hope for justice, but also that Ian will truly take responsibility for what he’s done. We would urge any other victims to contact the authorities. Jamie, Lee, Luke, Mike and Stu” Ian Watkins and two anonymous female defendants, who also pleaded guilty to sex crimes, will be sentenced on Dec. 18.
Green Day announce they will be taking a break in 2014 2013 has been a hectic year for Green Day. Returning to the stage for the first time since front man Billie Joe Armstrong entered rehab in 2012. Both Armstrong and Green Day toured the world this year, but in a new interview, Armstrong says that the iconic pop-punk band will be taking a break following their Australian tour in early 2014. While talking to BBC Radio, Armstrong spoke about Green Day’s upcoming break: “We’re going to Australia, doing a tour there and then we’re going to take a break. We haven’t really been doing much. So it’s just nice to kind of do some other things, y’know, when we get ready to do Green Day again, our batteries will be charged.” Fanbase Music Magazine wishes the band a good rest and as we wait for the band to make a comeback to the music scene, we know how much these breaks are needed. Greenday Rock!!!
Bad news for Stone Sour fans as Jim Roots sits out of tour but good news for Slipknot fans as band reveal plans of new album Jim Root fans, were given some bad news and some amazing news all at once. Stone Sour has announced that Root will not be touring with the band on their upcoming winter tour. However, Root’s absence is for good reason, as he’s chosen to spend the time writing with Slipknot for the band’s next album! That is correct, Slipknot are working to create their fifth full-length album. Fans have been waiting for a new Slipknot album ever since ‘All Hope Is Gone’ was released all the way back in 2008. Although Jim Root will surely be missed as Stone Sour embarks on their tour with Pop Evil and Stolen Babies, Root’s talent will go straight into Slipknot with no distractions allowed. Stone Sour had this to say about the issue on their Facebook page: “With an impending Slipknot album on the horizon, Jim will not be touring with Stone Sour this winter. Everyone involved is okay with the decision and our mutual friend Christian Martucci will be filling in on guitar. It was a difficult decision, but as the fans have wanted another Stone Sour tour and Jim had responsibilities to the writing process with Slipknot, we feel this is the best decision where everyone wins.” I think I speak for everyone, this bittersweet news is music to the ears, We at Fanbase can’t wait for the new SlipKnot album.
Hi, my name is Rene Parkin Maritz and I live in Cape Town. I’m passionate about S.A. music and love the way it connects you to people. My section in the magazine is called ‘Soul Sessions’. We are blessed with some of the finest artists in our country and as such I feel we need to support them in whichever way possible. Many of them work day time jobs, some more than one a day! At night they get ready to do what they love, namely play gigs in bars, clubs, and other venues. I admire them for their determination, and especially for their love of music. Creativity is a gift bestowed upon them from above and it is a gift that they long to share with you! Each month I will be featuring various artists in and around Cape Town. My soul feels moved by what I see –the bearing of souls on that stage; the telling of their stories through music and in turn, I am driven to write and share it, not in music but through my personal experiences…hence ‘Soul Sessions’. Thank you for reading my stories and remember they value your support and encouragement.

The Casa Labia Museum Presents : Karen Wilson Harris
The Casa Labia Museum hosted an event on Saturday 16 November 2013, and I had the absolute privilege to attend this show featuring Karen Wilson Harris. Karen is a Soprano who studied music and has a classical background. Karen was going to sing some light classical music and the event was labeled as ‘Love Is…’. I had previously been to one of her performances and knew that everyone was in for the most incredible afternoon. If angels could sing, I imagine they would sound like Karen! Karen takes her voice to places that you never thought were possible, and listening to her, I once again realized what a rare and beautiful gift she has been blest with. Karen has perfect control over her voice and breathing, and her voice is smooth and uplifting. It carries you away like a beautiful white fluffy cloud, high up in the sky. Upon arrival at this breathtaking building, which was built in 1929 to reflect the spirit of 18th century Venice, I was left literally speechless. Having loved and dreamt about the city of Venice as long as I can remember, I was intrigued by this place. Known as ~ the ‘floating city’, Venice has always held my fascination and interest. Over the years I have fondly gazed upon images and longed to visit this romantic city. Memories of childhood, listening to fairytales of princes and princesses come to mind when thinking of this city of love. So, upon entering the Casa Labia Museum, I couldn’t believe my eyes, my dream and memories were awakened and it felt like I was walking into a true life fairytale! According to history, the Casa Labia Museum is the former Muizenberg residence of Count and Countess Natale Labia. The Casa Labia Museum was re-opened to the public on 5 May 2010 after a complete two-year restoration by the family. It is known as South Africa’s most exquisite multi-functional cultural centre and is available for hire as an up-market venue. Casa Labia Museum is home to a contemporary South African art gallery, the newly launched afro-chic CasBah Design Boutique, as well as a celebrated Italian café. Find out more on their website: http://casalabia.co.za/ Upon entering I saw people sitting at beautiful tables, enjoying a lovely lunch, or tea and scones and my mind took me back in time to yesteryear. Voices echoed around the room in soft whispers and gentle laughter flowed around me. Beautiful paintings grace the walls, lovely statues and antique furniture invite you in. All of a sudden I saw people leave their tables and move towards the inner room, where the scenario was set to tell the story of music. Karen and her lovely accompaniment Helen Broekmann on piano, were ready to begin, and suddenly the room was alive with music that pulled at the heartstrings and transported us into a scene out of Camelot, King Arthur and The King And I.
Karen does not just have the ability to sing, but also to act out the part. The music glued us to our seats and Karen took us on a journey of love, romance and beauty with her lovely collection of love songs.
These were the songs that Karen sang: She moved through the fair – Irish folk song/ My heart is like a singing bird – Hubert Parry Out of my dreams – Oklahoma / If I love you – Carousel Simple Joys of Maidenhood – Camelot / Before I gaze – Camelot Lord and Master – The Kind and I /So deep is the night – Chopin Solvejg’s Song – Grieg/Laughing Song – Die Fledermaus Quando me’n vo – La Boheme/Vilia – The Merry Widow/O mio babbino – Gianni Schicch/The Physician – Cole Porter Karen truly lived herself into each and every song and we lapped up every single moment. The people ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’ and clapped. What a truly beautiful afternoon was had by all, in a captivating setting which created the ambience of the day. I can highly recommend the Casa Labia Museum for your events and functions. I know that I will be returning soon, if not for an afternoon of music, then for the pure pleasure of feasting my eyes on the beauty that is The Casa Labia Museum.

“side by side” Gig of Laurie Levine & Josie Field at Studio 7 Review and photography by Rene Parkin Maritz On Sunday the 24 November 2013 I attended the ‘Side By Side’ gig of Laurie Levine & Josie Field at Studio 7 in Seapoint. I heard from a close friend that these two were on tour in Cape Town, and I couldn’t resist meeting up with her to see what this dynamic duo were about. Seapoint has a vibe all of its own and the place seems to come alive at night with lots of street cafés and restaurants filled to overflowing with people. Studio 7 has a homely feel about it and warm wooden floors and comfy couches complete the picture. We had a good hour before the show kicked off and friends chatted excitedly all around us. Studio 7 is perfectly set up for a show of this nature. Some of the top artists in the country are featured on the ‘wall of fame’ ~ Natasha Meister , Amanda Tiffen, Dave Ledbetter, Freshlyground, Aking, Prime Circle and Dan Patlansky just to mention a few. To quote the Cape Times on Studio 7 ~ “This must be the greatest best kept secret in Cape Town. By far the most incredible way to watch live music… this is how music was meant to be listened to …” At 8.15, drinks in hand, we all settled down as Laurie and Josie took to the stage.
From beginning to end they were sensational. Laurie’s gentle, melodic, voice has such a unique and beautiful quality that soothes and caresses the heart like a soft silky feather. On the other hand Josie’s deep, powerful, voice is rich and warm and lights a fire in your heart. Like the sun and the moon, Laurie & Josie’s voices together, bring their own kind of light. From folk to blues to soul, a perfect combo! To add to the ‘completeness’ of their unique act, Laurie & Josie used various instruments including guitar, banjo, ukulele. Laurie & Josie together made me feel like I had stepped back to a place in time where people would gather to sing spiritual songs and hearts would unite to bring a feeling of community. Upon leaving, I gladly purchased my copy of ‘Side By Side’, as I wanted to listen and experience it all again…over and over. The songs on the album are deep, sincere and tug at the heart strings and the lyrics are real and honest. I can highly recommend it! To sum up the evening I would say it was truly an intimate night of music and everyone present was touched by the beauty that is Laurie Levine & Josie Field. The old saying ‘dynamite comes in small packages’ most definitely applies to these two. MUSIC AGAINST CRUELTY
(BEAUTY WITHOUT CRUELTY EVENT)
Review and photos by Rene
Parkin Maritz I was looking forward to Saturday night, the 9 November 2013, as there was a big event planned in aid of Beauty Without Cruelty (BWC) at the Italian Club just outside Cape Town, and a couple of bands were going to entertain us for the evening. Upon learning what BWC was all about, the bands sponsored their services for the evening. I think this is most admirable, considering how much planning and timing go into pulling off an event such as this. A little background about BWC – they are primarily an educational organization promoting the rights of animals. While they do not have ‘hands-on’ projects, their main mission is to educate and inform the public about the suffering of animals in vivisection/ cosmetic testing, factory farming and wildlife exploitation (fur and ivory trade, porcupine quills, killing of so-called ‘problem’ animals etc,) and much more. Read more on their website – http://www.bwcsa.co.za/. If you would like to make a donation to this worthy cause, the bank details are: Standard Bank, Savings Acc: 077 491 645, Branch: 025109. I had never been to the Italian Club and was pleasantly surprised at what a lovely venue it is despite it being such a large venue. Upon arriving I was welcomed warmly by the hosts of the evening. A little bit about the venue – it is suitable for weddings, beauty pageants, birthday parties, sports events and more. The Club’s restaurant is a traditional Italian Restaurant. Italian food is what they’re known best for, with their scrumptious fresh pizza made in a genuine wood-fired pizza oven. The Italian Club is geared up for children and there is a special children’s room with games and activities. Find out more about them here: http://www.icct.co.za/index.html BWC had arranged a delicious vegan meal ranging from salad to stir fry vegetables and a lovely crumbed patty. Let us not forget about the spinach cannelloni, one word comes to mind ‘yummy’. Desert was a delicious medley of fruit with sorbet. The waiters on duty were friendly and catered to our every need. Looking around me I could see that people were excited, happy and in the party mood, which added to the vibe of the evening. The MC for the evening was the beautiful Samantha Laura Kaye, well known actress and model, who did an amazing job. To see her portfolio visit her website: http:// www.samanthalaurakaye.com/about-me/
The band Big Exit were first to take the stage. The band comprises of Joshua Grierson- Vocals/Guitars/Song Writing/ Arrangements ,Nicolai Roos – Guitars/ Sounds/Arrangements, Adir Levi – Guitars/ Arrangements, Morgan Kennedy – Percussion/Drums/Arrangements. Each member can boast years of experience in the music industry. Their talent did not go unnoticed and they truly kicked the evening off. Some people couldn’t wait to get up and dance and when their last song ended, the party had just begun. The music washed over us like a giant wave, bringing energy and taking you along for the ride. What incredible artists they are, with each artist bringing their own gift on stage. Words like intoxicating and hypnotic come to mind. To me Big Exit’s style is reminiscent of the 80’s, and some big rock bands come to mind, but I wouldn’t like to compare them to any of these, as they have a fresh, new and energetic sound unique to any other. The party was officially in full swing, and the evening had just kicked off with a bang. There is an album in the making, and I cannot wait to get my hands on the first available copy. If you would like to find out more, check out their links: https://www.facebook.com/bigexitband http://bigexit.bandcamp.com/ https:// twitter.com/BigExitBand WE SET SAIL is a local Cape Town band formed in 2009. Their genre of music is ‘Cinematic Instrumental Rock’. Upon listening to them I was pleasantly surprised at the instrumental talent of each member. They fit together like a puzzle, each bringing their own unique style and musical interpretation. They truly live up to their name, and their music makes you feel as if you’re setting sail for an unknown destination. I heard people whisper, ‘I’m really enjoying these guys’. The band comprises of: Marné Gelderbloem – Guitar & Bass, Richard Brunyee – Keys and Synth, Joao Luis, Lanca Henriques – Guitar & Bass, Breda Weise – Drums. Check them out here -https://www.facebook.com/ wesetsailcapetown http:// soundcloud.com/wesetsail Andy Lund and The Mission Men were up next and having heard Andy Lund as a solo artist, I was curious to see what he would be like in a band.
The band consists of Andy Lund – Vocals / Guitar Sean Ou Tim – Bass/Piano/Vocals Adam Hill – Electric Guitar/ Lapsteel, Werner Von Waltsleben – Drums. Andy is known for his country style genre. The band brings a lovely blend of country and rock with a touch of blues. Andy has a rich history of music stemming back to his family. Watching them in action, I picked up on the connection the guys have with one another.
Continued on next page …..
Andy Lund & The Mission Men have launched their second album – Faster We Run. To quote Andy on the album name – ‘The name is taken from a song on the album, which is about how none of this (life) is real. None of the pain, none of the stress, none of the sadness, none of the craziness but still, faster we run. The title just kind of summed up the feeling and mood of the album’. Be sure to check them out here: https://www.facebook.com/ andylundandthemissionmen Taxi Violence was the next band to take to the stage. I spotted a group of young, loyal supporters, that started giggling at the table next to ours, and I realized their excitement was mounting. Taxi Violence has been on many lips throughout SA since the Rock/Indie band formed in 2006. Since their inception, Taxi Violence has gone on to rock every venue SA. Taxi Violence has been featured at every major festival in South Africa, and to crown that, they have taken their live shows abroad. Members – George van der Spuy (vocals); Louis Nel (drums); Rian Zietsman (guitar); Jason Ling (bass) and acompanied by Nic Roos (acoustic guitar). Their new album – ‘Soul Shake’ is now available for purchase. Check out their website on – http:// www.taxiviolence.com/ Joshua Grierson offered to finish the night off with a lovely solo acoustic set. Joshua’s genre includes Folk/Blues/Rock/Pop. The evening was slowly coming to an end, and everyone was winding down. Listening and watching Joshua on stage, I was reminded of a magician with a bag of tricks. A magic show is all about illusion, but here was someone who brought his own kind of magic, rather truth. Joshua’s music is not an illusion, but very real! His music has the power to move you to your very core, in a raw emotional way. His honest lyrics send a message directly to your soul. Magic is the wrong word when pondering his music. Better words to use would be spiritual, deep and phenomenal. A person comes away contemplating the deeper aspects of life ~ Love, death, and relationships. His music speaks tells a story about broken people and a broken world, which is the reality we live in. Joshua truly has the gift of storytelling and he displays it physically in every sense of the word. He is sincere and honesty is what his music is all about. A person is never left untouched after attending one of his shows. A quote I read about Joshua ~ ‘The sweat rolls down his brow, his entire body aches and weaves with some internal, now exposed dance his fingers are rattling on his fret board like scattered bones on the sand, and the feet connected to his rubber legs, are stomping a new hole in the stage’ .
Joshua’s guitar is an extension of himself- they become one, which just adds to the brilliance of his music ~ this is Joshua Grierson! Joshua has also just released his brand new double-disc album, ‘Joshua Grierson And Friends’ recorded live at The Alma Cafe, which is available on : http://joshuagrierson.bandcamp.com/ To find out more check out his links below: https:// www.facebook.com/joshuagriersonmusic http://www.joshuagrierson.com/ The dedication and passion of all involved in bringing it all together so beautifully must be commended. What an absolute delight to behold it unfolding before my very eyes! Our country is blessed with some of the finest artists in the world. I hope this event will become a yearly tradition and I will be first in line to purchase my ticket.
The Acoustic Kings at &Union review and photos by Rene Parkin Maritz
When a friend and I heard that Justin Serrao, David van Vuuren and Jed James , namely ‘The Acoustic Kings’ were bound for Cape Town we were like two eager beavers, literally counting the minutes to their arrival. To add to the fun another close friend decided to join us for the evening. On Tuesday the 26 November, 2013 we set off for &Union – a lovely little pub come restaurant, with burgers that make your mouth water. & Union’s beer is brewed by craftsmen concerned with purity and selection of fine traditional malt ingredients. So well worth the visit, even just for a pint! The draw card however is the fact that they host artists and the lovely outdoor venue is suitably set up for this, with a spacious area to accommodate several people. The venue has a good flow from the pub to the outdoor area. The staff is friendly and efficient. Justin Serrao kicked off the evening with a bang. Justin’s genre is contemporary folk/country. A little background on Justin ~ his debut album “Touching Toes Without Clothes” has become one of my treasured possessions and watching him sing these songs on stage just make them come alive. Justin has such an expressive personality and the music comes alive in his eyes. You can see that music is his passion and his life. Fervency and zeal are two words that are synonymous with Justin. He works incredibly hard and is very active on social media; always promoting and arranging gigs. Justin is concerned for his fellow artists and does this, not purely for his own benefit, but also for the benefit of his fellow artists. This is just who Justin Serrao is! Find out more about Justin here: https://www.facebook.com/JustinSerraofanpage, http:// www.reverbnation.com/main/search?q=justin+serrao Next up was Jed James. Jason Paul accompanied Jed on guitar. Doing a little background search on Jed I found that he went to London at the age of 18, fresh out of school, where he grabbed the opportunity to record an EP and work with Nemesis. He worked as a session guitarist for 18 months and this gave him the experience he sought to start his own solo project. Jed believes that music needs a shake-up, a revolution. He entered the studio with the producer "Nemesis" to record a demo EP that includes the tracks “Believe It” and “Gasoline” but went on to write and record more than an albums worth of songs. To quote Jed ‘People have said Rock n Roll is dying, but the time has come to revive and create a new form of Rock. Tech-Rock is the hybrid of the future’. Sitting there listening to Jed and Jason I realized again how amazingly blessed we are to have such fine musicians living in S.A. A close friend turned to me during their performance and said to me ‘I am really enjoying these guys’. These guys truly rock! To find out more, here are the links: https://www.facebook.com/jedjamesmusic, Take a listen to their beautiful tunes here: http:// www.reverbnation.com/jedjames Last but not least was David van Vuuren. What can I say about David – humble, sincere and a personality that can only be described as charismatic. Whenever David sees you he displays his happiness for all to see. He always makes time for a chat! David cares about people and this is reflected in his music and probably sums up why his music is so special. Having watched David perform on many occasions over the past couple of years, all I could think watching him, was WOW! David has an ‘independent style’ that is uniquely David van Vuuren. David’s voice has matured and he has grown incredibly as an artist. David’s new album ‘The Raging Sea’ is due for release in the not too distant future. Listening to these songs, which can only be described as deep, personal and meaningful, I was once again moved emotionally.
David has a way of tugging at your heart, but not only does your heart feel, your whole soul is stirred and shaken. Like a cup filled to overflowing, David’s music fills every fiber of your being. David’s song, ‘The Raging Sea’, is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. His music makes you reflect on what’s important about this world -relationships, love and life.
I thought to share a little word from one of David’s biggest fans: Chantal McCreadie :’Wow, where do I start. To say I absolutely adore David Van Vuuren would be an understatement. I love the passion that just flows out of him when he sings. My idea of music has completely changed since meeting David. I used to just listen to music, but now I actually listen to the words and the meaning behind it. I have met so many amazing people through my DVV journey, and I cannot imagine my life without them. I will always follow David and his music, no matter where it takes me. To me, he is such a passionate, mesmerizing performer, I just know he is going to reach new heights and touch people’s lives, like he has mine.’ People never leave the same after experiencing David van Vuuren. Here are his links: https:// www.facebook.com/ davidvanvuurenfanpage?ref=br_tf, http://www.reverbnation.com/ davidvanvuuren These guys hit Cape Town like a storm! The comradeship between them is a gift. I hope they get to take this tour countrywide, because it is something the whole of S.A. should get to see, feel and experience. Thank you for bringing your music to our beautiful city!
The Acoustic Kings at Stoep and Swing –
review and photos by Rene Parkin
Friday night the 29 November 2013, The Acoustic Kings were bound for Stoep and Swing, our local pub and restaurant, situate in Glencairn, Simonstown. The Stoep and Swing is a cozy little hangout where locals come together for dinner, drinks and live music. So if you’re looking for a place to hangout, look no further than the Stoep and Swing. Not only does the Stoep have a good vibe, choice of food & drinks, but some of the best music artists in S.A. have performed here. Stoep has a lovely balcony with tables overlooking the sea for those who arrive early and want to enjoy the stunning view. Occasionally during whale season, you may be lucky enough to spot one or two in the bay! Upon arriving I walked in and I was once again reminded how welcome I feel when visiting the Stoep. It was a beautiful night and I thought, not only am I enjoying the company of friends, but I’m getting to enjoy these guys all over again. The minute we walked through the door David came to greet us with a warm hug and we all gathered together around the stage waiting for the show to begin. First up was none other than David van Vuuren himself. After having seen David perform earlier the week I knew what to expect. You see, there are a couple of us that have followed him on Facebook for a couple of years now, ever since his Idols journey. Call us crazy if you like, but we don’t want to miss a single show, and that’s how David has touched us with his music. One thing I know about David, is that he has always just wanted to make his own music, not something that was forced upon him. Music has to be felt deep in the soul, otherwise it is meaningless and without purpose. For David, Idols was merely a stepping stone for greater things, and he has gone from strength to strength. David has always had music living in his soul, just waiting to be shared with the world. Every song that David has written has come straight from his heart and he believes in real music. Not only does he have a powerful voice, but his guitar playing leaves you breathless. Continued on next page …………...
Every word that comes out of his mouth penetrates your heart and soul and you feel what he is feeling…the connection is tangible. Not only does he get his music across in a powerful way, but is sincerity is felt. With the passion he possesses for his music, the world is his oyster. Here is a you tube link to one of David’s own songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdWDMFC9DY8 You Will Leave A Mark - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wkXCejA2CE Next up was Jed James and Jason Paul. What a dynamic team they make. Since seeing them earlier the week, I’ve been listening to their music on various sites. Jed has a strong voice that has a rock-edge. His music is described as Tech-Rock and having experienced rock bands in the 1970-1980’s I felt like I had been transported back in time. People around me were energized and just wanted to dance, and they did! These guys are no average duo; their sound is explosive to say the least. Jimmy Hendrix step aside, here comes Jed James - http:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=cybzTF8SCkM A video of the song ’Home’ that was recorded at home – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecBIYzhJnTY The Stoep was rocking, and rock ‘n roll never sounded so good. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see Justin Serrao do his set at the end, but having watched Justin on numerous occasions I knew the audience would lap him up, as always. A close friend stayed until the end and said that Justin was amazing and they just couldn’t get enough. Justin has a heart of gold, just like his song! Check out his video here: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=QK2mCQacj_w Here is his official video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIn936e56zg If you would like to read more about the artists visit to Cape Town, here is the link: http:// artandphotgraphy.wordpress.com/2013/11/28/the-acoustic-kings-at-union/ Thanks guys for bringing your music to Cape Town.

How did you get into photography? I’ve always loved photography and always had a camera with me, I decided to take it a step forward and upgrade from my Sony Cybershot to a proper DSLR.... The rest is history. What camera are you currently using? Nikon D3100 with a Sigma Speedlight Why do you like Photography? Well, the specific photography that I do is live events, bands, music. My aim is to capture that moment, that music that song... I want people to feel the emotion of that moment when they look at my photos.
What style of Photography do you like? I love Lomography, but sadly have not been able to buy a camera for that... I love taking pictures of bands, as I said to capture that music on ‘’film’’. Where do you see yourself in five years, in terms of your photography? My dream is to one day be the Ross Halfin of this generation, so hopefully within five years I’ll be getting press passes to big concerts...
Who is your favourite photographer and why? Ross Halfin, he began his career shooting for Sounds magazine, and years later he has taken photos of, The Sex Pistols, Alice Cooper, Slash, Iron Maiden, ACDC, Aerosmith, Van Halen, KISS and Ozzy basically every musical icon in the rock/metal genre. He was on tour with Metallica in SA as well. Yes bands, actually invite him on tour with them.... He’s a legend and his work and persistence has really inspired me, and shown me that hard work is important.
What advice do you have for upcoming photographers? Don’t think you will get paid thousands of Rands, it’s hard work, and do it because you love it... Do it for the art, and do the type of photography that YOU like. How can people get hold of you? My photography page : https://www.facebook.com/pages/VlademirovkaPhotography/169225419847234

The Dan Patlansky Weekend – eat, sleep & breathe guitar for three days
Fresh from a highly successful European Tour with sold out venues, musical virtuoso Dan Patlansky is preparing for a blockbuster set of South African shows leading up to The Dan Patlansky Guitar Weekend to be held in Clarens (6 – 8 December) and Stellenbosch (13 – 15 December). The Dan Patlansky Guitar Weekend is a three day event where 30 fellow guitarists and attendees will have the chance to hang out with Dan Patlansky and attend group workshops covering various subjects, including Improvising, Licks and Riffs, Chords and Harmony, and Tone and Gear. Also included is a semi private lesson where the student decides what he or she wants to cover, plus many hours of jamming with other people that share the same passion for guitar playing. “Guitar lovers can look forward to a bigger and more engaging installment of The Dan Patlansky Guitar Weekend this year. With sponsors such as Music Connection, Protea Hotel Stellenbosch and SAB/Castle, this year’s edition promises to be even more memorable and I for one cannot wait for December,” said Dan Patlansky. The Dan Patlansky Guitar Weekend is open to guitar lovers of all ages and playing levels. Those attending will be required to bring along their guitar (electric or acoustic), an amp, bedding (if attending Clarens) and some spending money for the cash bar and for meals not covered over the weekend. There is a minimal cost of R2 450 per person for spending an entire weekend learning from the celebrated musical talent that is Dan Patlansky. Dan Patlansky’s success is hardly surprising. In 2013 he released his first acoustic album, Wooden Thoughts, to critical acclaim, launched his own online store to deal with the demand for his music and won the only Gold Ovation award at the 2013 Standard Bank Ovation Awards announced at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The same year he made waves in Europe and Scandinavia, attended the Horsens Blues Festival in Denmark - where he was recently invited back to perform – and, in Hannover, performed at the legendary Blues Garage alongside big names such as Joe Bonamassa. After his 2012 album 20 Stones was voted the 10th best album (out of 20) on Blues Rock Review, the editorial team invited Patlansky to be a writer on their blog site and he continues to write for them.
Dates for The Dan Patlansky Guitar Weekend are: Clarens 6 - 8 December Stellenbosch 13 - 15 December
To book for either of the weekends, contact Susan at dpguitarweekends@gmail.com or call 076 412 6536. Dates for upcoming Dan Patlansky shows countrywide are; Blaauw Klippen Estate 16 December

Elvis Blue is no stranger when it comes to the South African Music industry. In 2010, Elvis Blue took part in 6th season of the reality show, Idols South Africa and was announced winner of the final held on 2 November 2010, he won with 64% of the votes. Since his Idols days Elvis has managed to keep himself busy in the industry and keep making a name for himself. Having just released his first full length Afrikaans album simply called “Afrikaans”, we talk to Elvis about his new album and his Idols days. Enjoy the interview
What language do you prefer to write music in? Writing in English is probably a little bit different to writing in Afrikaans. When you are writing in English you are competing with the entire world. You somehow feel that the songs you are writing will be heard by a larger audience. When I write in Afrikaans I find that my focus shifts and I write for my country my people and people who are closest to me. I am therefore writing as a South African and not as someone less thoughts of conquering the world. I know my Mom will listen to it and that makes me a little nervous sometimes. Thank you for doing this interview with us Elvis, how can people get hold of you, do you have social networks?
Hi Elvis, it’s awesome to be featuring you in Fanbase Music magazine, let’s start from the beginning; when did it all start as a musician, did you always know from a young age that you wanted to do music? Thank you, it's great to chat to you. As a youngster, our home was always filled with beautiful music. My mum was a classical piano teacher. when I was in primary school there was a beautiful girl singing in the choir, so I thought it would be wise to join the choir. So my love for music started when I was very young. What genre of music do you classify yourself in? I am a singer songwriter. What are some of your influences as a musician? I love all types of music.... Not a big rapper though Where do you find your inspiration from for your song writing? "Inspiration exists, but it must find you working." This is something Picasso said. I believe the harder you work and the more time you spend with your instrument, the better you will get and the more inspired you will be. Regarding your Idols background, do you think it is a good way for musicians to get themselves noticed? Yes, I believe it is important for every musician to make sure he's heard by as big an audience as possible. As one of the musicians who started their platform on Idols, do you feel Idols has helped you a lot on where you are now on your musical career? Absolutely Okay you are no stranger when it comes to making albums, but this is your first full length Afrikaans album, what can you tell us about the album and what it means to you? I have been writing material for this album for the last three years. I am very proud of it. I grew up listening to beautiful Afrikaans music and I've always felt it is extremely expressive and powerful language. Afrikaans is also the language I speak at home with my wife and my kids, therefore I believe the writing on this album is much closer to my heart.
I do, you will be able to easily find me on Facebook and on Twitter Do you have any last messages for your fans and our readers? Just a thank you. The Afrikaans album has just gone gold, thank you to everyone who went out and bought it and to all who are supporting me. I truly appreciated.
“inspiration exists, but it must find you working” something Picasso said……..
Live in South Africa 1 February 2014, Gallagher Estate, Johannesburg. Presented by Axe in association with Channel O. Hip-hop megastar, Big Sean, makes his first South African stage appearance on 1 February next year, brought to you by Axe, and in association with Channel O. This exclusive and once-off event will take place at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg on Saturday 1 February 2014. A tremendous feat for Axe, it is guaranteed to be a phenomenal gathering of hip-hop fans from across South Africa to witness the spectacle that is Big Sean. AXE is exceptionally proud to be bringing in Big Sean as part of their debut foray into the music and lifestyle scene. “Music is an integral part of an AXE Man’s life, and through bringing out international artists, starting with Big Sean, we have the opportunity to create some once-in-a-lifetime experiences for our users” said AXE Brand Manager Vincent Viviers. Big Sean’s first visit to SA and Africa follows hot on the heels of the star’s second studio album, Hall of Fame, selling an impressive 72 000 copies in its first week of release in August. The artist’s career has exploded in the two years since his debut album, Finally Famous: The Mixtape, in 2011. After record first-week sales and raving reviews inRolling Stone and just about everywhere else, it also spun off crossover hits with, among others, West and Roscoe Dash, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj. GQ Mag’s ‘Hottest Rookie’ of 2012 now has a Facebook following pushing 3 million, close to 4 million twitter followers and no less than 46 million YouTube views worldwide. The MC from Detroit, Michigan, has come a long way since free styling for Kanye West in 2005. Rapping since his preteens, Sean Anderson won an MC contest at a local hip-hop radio station, earning a spot to rap live on-air every Friday night for nearly a year. It was here that he made a lifetime contact in West who agreed to hear his freestyle. Following a mentorship from West, Sean signed with G.O.O.D. Music in 2007, and Def Jam in 2008. Most recent accolades are double Grammy nominations for Mercy, his collaboration with West, his mentor, and which also featured label mate Pusha T and 2 Chainz. Big Sean is currently touring the USA and Canada, with concerts and appearances scheduled in Miami, Atlanta, Toronto, Montreal and elsewhere during October. G&G Productions, the company behind the successful Sensation ‘Innerspace’, NYE Live City Link Up and Space Ibiza South Africa, will be the team behind the production of Big Sean’s performance in South Africa.

Set For The Sky release Head For The Hills Music Video Debut music video from South African alternative rock band Set For The Sky
On Friday 18 September Set For The Sky released their music video for their song “Head For The Hills”, the first official music video to be brought out by the young band. “Head For The Hills” is from their free Head For The Hills tour EP, brought out to coincide with their 2013 mid-year tour. “Head For The Hills is a dialogue between two friends (Jonathan and David) who are forced to part because of extreme circumstances, in a time very different to ours. Wednesday Nights- R40, R30 if your on a bands list Carling Black Label Battle of the Bands (Line ups will be updated on the events as soon as it's released)
Heart of Music and Hot Rocket, in association with Rumours Lounge and Carling Black Label Draught is proud to announce the annual ‘Carling Black Label Battle of the Bands’. Venturing away from the traditional Rock band battle, we have decided to cater for the ‘underground’ scene, specifically Metal, Alternative and Hard Rock and be the first to represent Carling Black Label in the Metal, Alternative and Hard Rock scene. With the help of our sponsors, South African Breweries, Music Connection, Atelier Recording Studios, CyberSkin Tattoos, S.K.O.A. Magazine, Timeless Photography, Odin Band Management and Rumours Lounge, we are able to reward the winners of each category with breath-taking prizes. The battle will run from 16 October 2013 to 15 February 2014 every consecutive Wednesday at Rumours Lounge, except for the final, which will be held on a Saturday, excluding 1 January and 25 December. The winner of each genre will be determined by the amount of guests that arrive to support each band, as well as judges. Representatives of Hot Rocket and Heart of Music will not be on the judges’ panel, to ensure fair play. What set this battle apart from all others is not only the magnitude of prizes but also the fact that all participating bands will be paid for their performance and that they only have to perform twice to win the competition.By looking at the overwhelming interest that this project has already received, we expect it to be one of the biggest battles Gauteng has ever seen and we are extremely proud to be a part of it.How we choose the winner? 20% door votes + 80% judge votes. The sound engineer will judge the overall technical side of the performance, Fred(Owner of Rumours) will judge how the band handles the venue, and Ray Harrison will judge the overall performance. (If you want to you can go chat to Ray after the show for some Constructive criticism, he will be sitting taking notes through out every bands set.) DOWN TO THE RIVER – A BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND UP THE CREEK FESTIVAL GIVE AWAY: Up The Creek organisers, Annie and Anthony, get nostalgic about The Boss’s return to Africa: “The year was 1988. A very bleak time in our country. As outcasts in the international world, not only were economic sanctions applied but local South Africans were deprived of sporting opportunities and the opportunity to listen to international music acts. Some of us music lovers got to hear that Bruce Springsteen would be appearing in Harare for a concert later that year. That was all the impetus we needed to get our butts to Zimbabwe as fast as we could. Hiring a 10-seater plane we flew from Joburg, landing in Harare. It was my first time in this beautiful country and I distinctly remember making our way from the airport to the stadium driving down a gorgeous jacaranda lined avenue with the sun, a huge orange ball, setting in the sky. It was oh so hot and the evening was filled with promise………”read the whole story and how The Boss welcomed the South Africans at his show here: http://www.upthecreek.co.za/down-to-the-river-a-bruce-springsteen-

Jack Iver & Benjamin Hound – Dripping Sin Writers / Vocals / Guitars : Jack Iver & Benjamin Hound Drums : Etienne Fourie Benjamin Hound (former frontman of Dogtown) & Jack Iver came together to create “Dripping Sin”, a song with a propulsive chorus aided by an overall tempo which surges and recedes in harmony. Designed to attract a wide variety of audience, these two vastly different musicians merged their musical backgrounds to create a unique sound. “We wanted to write a simple, vocally driven song that sounds a bit rough! We’re just two friends, who
sat down and decided to do a song for fun. We took 3 days to create 'Dripping sin' and this is what we came up with.” - Benjamin Hound
“The main idea behind 'Dripping Sin' is analogous to the bad decisions we make whilst calling ourselves
good people. Whether you believe your own comforting illusion is irrelevant. As long as everyone else thinks your licitly sane then so it shall be. In our natural state of hedonistic decadence, the song plainly states, it might be wrong, but god damn its good.” – Jack Iver

Tickets Computicket The launch of music channel MTV on 1 August 1981 led to a creative explosion of sight and sound that turned the music industry on its head. No longer were people content to simply hear their favourite musicians, they had to see them too. Now, in a tribute to the incredible culture of music videos that revolutionised the pop music industry and created a new platform for video art, producer Cedric Vandenschrik will perform his new show, “Video Killed the Radio Star” at the GrandWest Roxy Revue Bar every Wednesday to Saturday from 22 November to 11 January 2014.
The talented cast will showcase the years of cutting-edge videos, from the 80s through to the 90s, when creative teams experimented to produce the most unique and memorable video’s, and MTV served as the music video headquarters for the pop music world. To an extent, Video did kill the radio, at least as a way of promoting new music, and the slogan “I want my MTV” was the order of the day throughout the world, even here, on our own SABC! Artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, A-ha, Peter Gabriel, Tina Turner, Cindy Lauper, Dire Straits and so many more all became associated with their videos. Bringing back these performances will be vocalists Riyaan Cornelius and Lee Rath, keyboardists Tracy Johannes and Chad Zerf, who also performs vocals, drummer Adam Coolsaet, bassist Alex Mayers and guitarist Andre Ferreira. Shaun Johannes will supply musical direction. The audience will be treated to a visual and musical feast of catchy hits such as Madonna’s Material Girl, Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer, Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love, Duran Duran’s Wild Boys and Cindy Lauper’s anthem Girls Just Wanna have Fun, to name a few. The doors open at 8pm and the curtain rises at 8.30pm. Tickets are available from Computicket at R90 and in the words of introduction of that first broadcast in 1981:

Ballistic Blues’ Tell Me You Like It! Gauteng Tour After rocking many a music lover’s socks off at Oppikoppi Bewilderbeast earlier this year, Ballistic Blues is ready to embark on their very first official Gauteng Tour. The young and energetic Cape Town blues rock outfit has had an exciting year thus far. Their highlights include the release of their debut EP, playing at big festivals such as Up The Creek and The Table Mountain Blues Summit, as well as co-winning the Rolling Stone SA’s Rockstarter band competition. Ballistic Blues has performed at most major venues in the Western Cape and now wants to expose their music to Gauteng audiences to hopefully win over many new fans. The Tell Me You Like It! Gauteng tour runs from 24 November to 1 December 2013. Ballistic Blues hails from the Northern suburbs of Cape Town and was established while the members were still in high school. The band of four is Nick Forbes (vocals and rhythm guitar), Tyan Odendal (lead guitar and backing vocals), Jp le Roux (bass) and Francois Keyser (drums). Their authentic, lively blues sound sets them apart from any other band in the music scene. The band’s debut EP has received phenomenal feedback from fans and music critics alike. Ballistic Blues has been described as having “a die-hard attitude” despite their young age. Many have also complimented them by saying that they are “a fresh new package” in the music industry, sticking to the traditions of the blues genre, whilst still being contemporary. Young and old seem to agree that the guys have brought the blues back – only with a younger image. Ballistic Blues’ first single, ‘No Harm’ has been playlisted by Gauteng radio stations VOW (Voice of Wits) 90.5FM and Tuks FM 107.2 just ahead of their tour. This can only mean the start of an exciting Gauteng adventure. GoodLuck CD Launch “Creatures of the Night”
On Wednesday 2013-11-06, Just Music hosted the launch of GoodLucks 2nd CD, called Creatures Of The Night at Cinema Nouveau in Rosebank. The GoodLuck started out about 4 years ago, after being part of Goldfish. The band consists of Ben Peters (Producer and very talented with an assortment of musical instruments), Juliet (aka Jules) Harding (Lead Singer) who is also joined by Raiven Hansmann (on keyboard and saxophone). Their debut album, which was released in 2010, produced an overwhelming six (6) No 1 hits on the mayor radio stations as well as ten (10) Top 5 hits. South Africa is their main market, which is clearly indicated by their no less than 267 shows in South Africa during the last two years. Their second biggest market will without a doubt be Europe, where they tour an average of five (5) months per year. The evening was sponsored by JC Le Roux, and the sponsor was represented by Michelle Mapanda. Some of the celebrities attending the event was Rob Forbes of 5FM, Jonathan “Ziyon” Christian from LiquiDeep and Jsomething from Micasa Music. For the recording of their 2nd CD, GoodLuck has decided to go on a two (2) week tour through Namibia and also to film their experiences while on tour, which provided for some laughter during the screening of their “making of” movie called “This Might Sound Crazy”. All band members as well as all the recording equipment (audio as well as visual) had to be packed into five (5) Minis. Ben also manufactured some recording devices of his own, before they went on this tour of discovery. I can only imagine that an obscene amount of research was put into this project during the time between deciding on this venture and actually packing the vehicle and heading off to Namibia. I was amazed to see which natural sounds were recording to later be incorporated into the unique sounds of GoodLuck. All sorts of sounds were recorded, from the sonic properties of the wind, the grunt of a Rhino, drumming on rocks, the barking of Zebras to the natural organic sound of fire crackling and popping. In order to be sure that they had sufficient power to do all their recordings in the middle of the desert, they made use of solar panels. GoodLuck also incorporated the sound of a local 25-piece award winning coir into their music. One of the highlights of This Might Sound Crazy must have been when Ben decided to lower Juliet’s uninsured R10000 microphone into the Fish River Canyon to get the specific recording of the echoing sound which he was looking for. I am not sure how GoodLuck would classify their unique sound, but I would call it Swingy-Jazzy-Blues with a touch of natural African sounds. For additional information on GoodLuck, be sure to check out their Artist-page on Just Music.
