A hunter’s moon peered out from behind the clouds, as four strangers strode down destiny’s path towards their inevitable meeting. On this night of nights our strangers were heading for a local whisky joint filled with rats, sailors and dirty glasses. The dive was packed and the smell of sweat and smoke filled your nostrils, it was the perfect place for a fight, the bloody knuckles and broken noses of the patrons testified to that. Some nerd was playing folk guitar on the stage and soon flying bottles and bar stools hastened the end of his gig. Amongst this frenzied collection of drunks and mercenaries, a lone warrior guitarist stood tall before them. With an ebony Les Paul and a bottle of Johnnie Walker, Murray began with a lick that shut the unruly crowd up. Soon his fingertips glowed like red hot embers as the notes electrified the air. From the back corner a heavy bearded man named Shaun downed his tenth Nordic ale and leapt on the stage. With his base guitar in his hands he grooved as smooth as chocolate milk. Soon Gert stood on the stage and riffed as an equal, his fingers dancing amongst the frets like they were on cocaine. Now the joint was really packed and the whiskey was flowing like a river. The final adventurer to join the trio was Kyle, a titan of percussion; he sat behind the drums and unleashed a furious beat that sounded like he played with switchblades and hand grenades instead of sticks and hi-hats. The crowd seethed, the walls shook. The whole place was tearing at the seams and soon the building began to crumble and burn before the mighty sound of the blues. The crowd did not care they let the rafters, bricks and mortar tumble around them and danced the night away beneath the gaze of a hunters moon.
Interviewed by: Duwyne Clayton
Hi guys thanks for doing this interview with us, can you tell us how it all started for the band, what is the story behind “The Carolina bridal Party”? Hi there, Thanks for having us! Well we met in a Soviet concentration camp. Shaun broke us out. We’ve been brothers in Blues ever since.
You have an interesting band name; can you tell us how that name came about? We wanted to play funerals and cheer them up somewhat. So we became The Carolina Bridal Party trying to be ironic. Needless to say we didn’t get much business.
What genre of music would you classify your music in? We definitely take our roots from Blues and then also from the energetic 70’s hard-rock sound. So Blues-Rock would be the most accurate.
Can you tell us something about each member of the band? Weeeeeell… We used to be 6 members but Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf couldn’t get along so they went solo. So we are just down to 4 members now.
First, Murray on guitar and vocals. A Badass lead guitarist with lots of soul running through his left handed deathly black Les Paul. Some say he actually met Robert Johnson at the Crossroads (of 1st and 5th Ave in Florida).
Second, Gert “The Diesel” on the other Les Paul and vocals. A tall figure with riffs that emulate the aggressive nature and sound of the V8’s and Harley Davidsons he loves so much.
On Bass there’s Shaun. (A.K.A The Beard, A.K.A The Rabbi, A.K.A Teach A.K.A The Astronaut). This bass popping, beard wielding man was said to have been a secret agent (but no-one can confirm or deny this statement). Recognized by his “bunny-hop” stage presence and of course the Beard and Bass guitar, he is a mysterious figure with a “crazy” demeanour.
Then clamping down on the deep ethnic southern-styled pots and pans is Kyle Kirk. Predecessor to the famous Captain Kirk, who would later save the galaxy from the wrath of Khan in Star Trek. His beats are simply effortless and filled with emotion not showing his natural tendency to be quiet and centred.
“Energy !!! Blues-RockGroove-Emotion and most of all fun !”
Who is the songwriter in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? Songs are written mostly by Murray and Gert. Inspiration mostly comes from great musicians like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Son House, Stevie Ray Vaughn, The Raconteurs, The Black Keys, Joe Bonnmassa, Clutch, Band of Skulls, Blind Willie Johnson, Led Zep and some dude down the road with a pool full of really awesome chicks that we’re not allowed to visit.
Is there a set process of how a song is put together, how does a song come together from the riff, vocals, drums and bass to the end product? Wow, that’s where we love being a band. Murray or someone would have a song penned down but when we hit the band room everyone hears something that they can do to compliment the song a bit more. Even though the song might be written down, it’s when we jam that the magic happens. All the greatest songs are written that way.
If we have never been to any of your live gigs, what can we expect if we were to attend one? ENERGY!!! Blues-Rock-Groove-Emotion and most of all fun!!!
Do you have any gigs planned for the year of 2014, where can we catch you play? At the moment we are planning a tour but we can only say more about that when it is confirmed. We will be hitting Rumours Lounge in Weltevreden Park on the 8th January for The Carling Black Label Battle of the Bands. You can contact us if you wanna be on the guest list and get a discount at the door (nudge nudge). Apart from that all our time is going into recording our debut album. Every spare second is used to make that the best it can be.
Do you have any social Medias, how can people get hold of you? Yeah! Facebook is the main conveyer of our plans, gigging info and sharing our blues-ridden feelings. Throw us a “like” if you wanna enjoy the journey with us. If you wanna listen to our tracks (apart from FB) you can check us out on Reverbnation.com as well. You can inbox us on our page or even smack something on our wall on fb if you wanna get hold of us and we are also on Twitter i.e. @CarolinaBridalP
Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any other messages for your fans/readers? No problem man. Thanks so much for having us! Just want to say : You always need the Blues, Stay in School, Follow your dreams and love your momma’s. Cause we do! Don’t forget about our Battle of the Bands gig on the 8th January 2014 at Rumours Lounge. You can contact us on Facebook if you want your name on the guest list for a R10 discount on the entry fee.

Loadshedder It’s funny how things work, one day while chatting with my brother, who now lives in the UK, he told me about this guy Shaun who he went to school with. It turns out Shaun is in a band called Loadshedder and my brother insisted I check them out. So after finding them on Facebook and giving them a listen, I am very glad my bro put me in contact with them. They have a really good sound. I am excited to present to you, Loadshedder, enjoy the interview!
Interview by: Duwyne Clayton
Hi guys thank you for doing this interview with us, let’s start from the beginning, where did it all start for Loadshedder?
Can you tell us how Loadshedder songs come together, from the riff, drums, bass and vocals; is there a set process on how you put a song together?
Shaun: Steve and Len met at a party and got chatting and soon discovered that they were both musos, Len being a drummer and Steve`a guitarist. Len had been renting a practice room / small mini factory in the heart of Chesterville which is a township near Westville in Durban. The two threatened each other with a jam and pretty much clicked immediately. About a week or two later Steve asked me if I wanted to come and have a jam and things snapped into place again. From then on it just became this addiction to flip the switch on "normal” life and get back to the jam room and kill it.
It’s always about the jam. When we get to the room its plug in and play straight away and these jams could go on for hours. We record these every time because it’s in those jams where everything gets released and the energies of things are at their peak. At this stage it just takes a certain look or a feeling during the jam and it’s that energy that we keep for new material. Do you still get nervous before a gig? Not at all, in fact we just want to get up and do it. It’s the waiting around before the show that creates some anxiety....but that’s just because we love playing so much
Can you tell us a bit about each member of the band? Shaun: Well BY FAR ! Len has the coolest job, he gets to blow sh$t up for a living and he's the drummer so explosive pretty much sums Len up. Lea's the newest member of Loadshedder and has been a mate since we were about 14. He's on bass and loving it. Loadshedder is the first band he's been in and he's super hungry. Lea and Steve have been making acoustic tunes for years on and off and there is a great connection. Steve's the frontman on Vox and Guitar. Not normal at all with his approach to music, the stranger the better. His guitar sound is as raw as it gets, going straight into a fat over driven amp, no pedals, just attitude! I play lead guitar and if Steve and me were a desert he would be peaches and I'd be the cream. Our collective approach to our music is to never stick to the normal, never try to fit into a specific genre. We try to keep everything we do as fresh and original as possible. Can you tell us about the band name, where and how did you come up with that name? Shaun: We arrived for a jam one night, opened the doors and flipped the switch......nothing....Loadshedded. Decided to shine the car lights into the room and (3 of us at that stage) got onto the drums and started playing these mind blowing rhythms.... next thing the lights came back on we just took it as a sign. What is some of the band’s influences? Shaun: That's a massive question; I would have to say that a lot of the early Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand vibe is really great riff wise. Steve’s very comfortable with RATM to Kings of Leon vocal styles , but you know to be honest if it sounds good and original enough to work we keep it. What genre of music would you classify your music in? Decide for yourselves --- https://soundcloud.com/ loadshedder Who is the songwriter in the band where do you get your inspiration from? The lyric side of things is pretty cool, a lot of the time we all sit together and just write on these huge pieces of paper and it works so well because it allows Steve to do some old school copy and pasting to create verses and choruses.
“It’s always about the jam!”
Do you have any social Medias, how can people get hold of you? Facebook - Soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/loadshedder https://www.facebook.com/loadshedder
Thank you for doing this interview with us, do you have any last messages for your fans and the readers?
Do you have any rituals before a gig? Oh yeah!! Steve’s really into the crack cocaine , and there's nothing like chasing the dragon just before the show to take the edge off....just kidding!!! , but yes, there are a few. Can you explain a typical band practice to us? Shaun: There’s this great habit that we're into now where we all get to swap instruments for a while. I love the drums! We really do get straight into it, as I mentioned before, we usually jam for a long time and end up writing a new tune every week. We go through the set once or twice and are constantly working on new stuff Do you practice more when you have a bigger gig etc Never - at this stage we could probably play our set 10 different ways. At first we would try practice as much as possible but not anymore we are really tight now. What is some of the bands achievements? We are relatively new on the scene but so far we have played with plenty of the local guys, recorded a 7 song Demo/EP in 2 days. Successfully gone from a 3 piece to a 4 piece and have submitted for Splashy Fenn 2014 (holding thumbs)

Interview by: Duwyne Clayton Photography by: Kian Erikson
Hi guys thank you for doing this interview with us, can you tell where it all started, what is the story behind Kuduchild? No sweat Duwyne. The story of Kuduchild started a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, which is, of course, a lie. But this next bit isn't- Kuduchild has been around in our current incarnation for a little over a year now, but in previous incarnations for about three years. Before now we went through a number of names and lineup changes, like every band has to go through before it starts figuring out its sh#t. Maybe one day we'll get to that point where we've figured out our sh#t, and we'll then be able to indulge in all the perks of rockstardom, like throwing televisions out of hotel windows, eating swans and other expensive meats, that sort of thing. But for now we're just a bunch of guys with a passion for making music and rocking out , which is pretty much the how and why of our origins. That probably doesn't really answer the question very well, but that's coz mystery is sexy. What genre of music would you classify your music in? The guy who recorded and mixed our EP, Alan Simmons, described it best: "It's kinda like retro seventies hard rock, with a little bit of metal in there." Think along the lines of Led Zeppelin having a fight with Kyuss and the White Stripes, and then making up with each other by doing lots of psychedelics in the desert. Can you tell us something about each member of the band? Louis, otherwise known as "Rapesloth", plays bass, makes weird faces, and creeps us all out. Matt sings, mans the front, and keeps the rest of us in check by swift delivery of sardonic comments when we start a##ing around too much. Aidan, aka "Blood Arms", beats the sh#t out of drums, spreads the love, and also spreads something called gorilla snot on his hands to stop his sticks from shooting into orbit when he gets excited. Etienne plays slick guitar licks and is the Band Daddy, so he drives the band forward. He is also fuelled by rage and will throw pudding at you if you cross him. Nick is the other guitarist. He smashes his hammy fists against the strings of his Firebird and hopes for the best. He also has one webbed foot and no face- only hair,. Who is the songwriter in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? In the space between twilight and darkness, betwixt wakefulness and slumber, at the edge of dreams. Some people get their ideas from there, but we get ours from the back of Chappies wrappers. (Did you know that the blue whale can swallow nothing bigger than a grapefruit?) Musically we get ideas from the music we love, and from each other. Is there a set process of how a song gets put together, how does a Kuduchild song come together from the riff, vocals, drums and bass to the end product?
“It’s kinda like retro seventies hard rock with a little bit of metal” If we have never been to any of your live gigs, what can we expect if we were to attend one? Lots of sweaty fumbling and feelings of confusion and inadequacy followed by an awkward silence. But when the gigs go well (and they usually do) then you can expect big fat slabs of molten riff, thundering drums, sexy girls on stage, lots of headbanging and hair all over the place. Expect a good time, coz we aim to please. Do you still get nervous before a gig? Absolutely, if you don't get nervous, or at least excited before a gig, that means you don't care anymore. Then you may as well spend the rest of your days gorging on ice cream and sausage whilst crying in the shower as you await the cold embrace of the grave. Can you explain a typical band practice to us? Louis rocks up early and makes Nick angry by talking about how the internet works. Aidan drinks beer and feeds some to Nick so that he calms down. Matt rocks up and complains that we haven't set up yet. Etienne rocks up late, but it's okay because he brought cheap whisky which he swaps for Aidan's beer. We talk about plans for world domination while we set up, and then we jam our set. Et picks on Aidan for being sloppy, then Matt complains that we're stuffing around too much and says "Can we play music please." Louis replies by telling us a story about this chick he knows and the stuff she can do with two spoons and a porcupine, and then Matt shoots him down with aforementioned sardonic wit. We take a smoke break, talk about how cr#p we sound and how we can fix that bit in that song that just isn't quite working yet, and then we return to the jam room to argue, drink, and make music. It's the most fun you can have offstage. Do you practice more when you have a bigger gig etc We definitely stress about it more, although we're pretty disciplined about practicing as a band twice a week, whether we have big gigs coming up or not. We even have a little jam room at Aidan's house called the Beehive, because it's got yellow foam all over the walls so we don't disturb the neighbours.
We don't really have a set process for writing, although it's usually very collaborative- one of us will come up with a riff, a beat, or a phrase of some kind, and then the rest of us use that as a springboard to launch ideas off, and then we jam and see what happens. We write a lot of our stuff in the practice room, and improvisation plays a big part.
Continued on next page ……….
You are in the process of Releasing your first EP, can you tell us more about the EP, what is it called? The EP is called the Kuduchild EP, because we're very imaginative that way. We recorded it over the course of the last winter at Sound Surgeon Studios, and had it mastered at Sound and Motion Studios, both in Cape Town. It has a picture of a kudu on it, and we think it's awesome. You should totally download it for free over here https:// soundcloud.com/kuduchild How many songs are on the EP? Four. Where was it recorded? We've already told you that. Come now man, pull yourself together! This is no time for silliness and tomfoolery! Lives hang in the balance! Or at least our musical careers do. Where can we find the EP? All over the interwebs. In addition to the address mentioned above, you can also find it here, here and here. But not over there. https://soundcloud.com/kuduchild, http:// www.reverbnation.com/kuduchild, https:// www.facebook.com/Kuduchild
I saw you submitted some music to Zone Radio and it featured on the Hill&Dale No Hoops required show, just how important is radio stations like Zone Radio who do so much for South African music for your career? Incredibly important. If it wasn't for stations like Zone Radio, Assembly Radio and UCT Radio, the South African airwaves would be one hell of a bore. The small radio stations give small bands like us a platform for our music, help grow the scene and help keep music interesting, so big thanks and much respect to them. The major radio stations wouldn't know a good guitar lick if it dribbled in their ears. In fact they probably don't even know what a guitar is, because the only instrument allowed on major pop radio stations nowadays is Autotune . Do you have any gigs planned for the year of 2014, where can we catch you playing? January 18th 2014 @ Carnival Court, Long Street CT - with Kraal (second support band to be confirmed. Also we'll be launching our music video for "no Bones" at this gig) Do you have any social Medias, how can people get hold of you? https://www.facebook.com/Kuduchild https://twitter.com/Kuduchild https://soundcloud.com/kuduchild Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any other messages for your fans/readers? Thanks for interviewing us! To our fans and readers- thanks for all the love and support that's got us this far, don't believe everything you read, and I want my copy of Sabbath's "Master of Reality" back- you know who you are.
The Daily Dose with Doug Barker Here at Fanbase Music Magazine, we are always making new friends in the music industry. The cool thing about the relationships we form with those in the DJ music industry is that they become part of your family. I mean c’mon, we tune into their shows, hear them on the radio and get into their daily lives. It’s only inevitable we take them as one of our own. We love to listen to the radio as much as the next person and often we get to know the presenters very well. But every once in a while I like to interview the man behind the mic and find out what goes inside their heads. We have done this before with the guys from Zone Radio and with Knysna FM presenter Wayne Greenstone. Both do a lot for the Indie scene and its artists. But now I would like to introduce you to someone else who we have come across, Doug Barker. I first came to know about Doug and his show “The Daily Dose with Doug Barker” through the guys from Volume Conflict. They made a big noise about this overseas station and this presenter in particular who was playing their music. They urged everyone to tune in, and boy, am I glad I did. Being a huge hard rock, grunge, metal fan myself this station seem to have it all, playing anything from Nirvana to Metallica to Slipknot, and of course even our local boys Volume Conflict. Even Pedestrian knockdown has made an appearance on Doug’s show. It came to be known to me that Doug even reads Fanbase Music Magazine, and with having a few conversations with him over Facebook, Doug was nice enough to mention Fanbase Music Magazine over the air a few times. I would like to mention that this is the first time Fanbase has been mentioned on an overseas radio station before. So anyway fast forward a few weeks, and I here I am interviewing Doug Barker and finding out a little more about him and the projects he is working on to help the Indie scene. This is what he had to say!!!
Hi Doug first of all thanks for letting us feature you in our mag, before we get into it, let’s find out a bit about yourself, for the readers out there who don’t know you, what radio station do you present for and what exactly is it that you do? I work for an Internet Radio Station Called Rock Hard Radio; We have been on the air for about 8 years, as a presenter, which I find a much more pleasant than DJ or Disc Jockey, which is what we are called in the States, especially in my position because we are a little different. I am passionate about everyone deserving chances, and Indie artist deserve a chance to be heard. So I spend a good part of my days trying to find new music and converting it so it can be played on the air, and then “Presenting” these awesome artist to the world. Did you always want to become a radio presenter, and what made you get into this line of work? I had my first radio show when I was 10 or 11 years old with a little am transmitter that my friend’s father had built for us. My Buddies dad was a radio operator in the US Navy in world war 2, we broadcast a daily show for the kids in the neighborhood so radio has been in my life as long as I can remember, but I was side tracked after a stint in the US Army I spent 26 year in retail management until the economy took a hit and I was laid off from a job I thought I would retire from, this is when I hit rock bottom, so out of necessity I formed Rock Bottom Productions. People think it is easy to become a radio presenter, just talk on air, push a few buttons and play music on air, but I for one can say this isn’t true, can you explain just how hard it is to be a Radio Presenter? I wouldn’t say it is a hard job to be a presenter, but you must have your stuff together, I have to check all my tracks and make sure they are ready for airplay, use social media to interact with my listeners, load my software so it plays correctly and make sure the run time fall into the format of the show all while talking and being pleasant while in a chaotic setting. For three or four hours I am steering the ship and trying to please everyone! But it’s the best job ever!!! What genre of music do you most enjoy? Well, being a DJ, I have to have a knowledge and appreciation for all music, but if I had to pick a favorite genre I would say it would be Classic Rock but stuff that leans towards the harder side that would mean music like Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Rush, Metallica, Anthrax and even Judas Priest, Slayer, Pantera etc stuff like that is all good. I could just keep naming them and I am sure I have left some favorites out also. You must come across all kinds of music both old and new, what is your favorite band at the moment? I deal with so many Independent Bands, two out of the top three I am listening to daily are South African bands they would be Volume Conflict, Pedestrian Knockdown, which is a pretty cool name too, and the third is a bunch of New York Guys called After Earth Oh and I can’t forget Skreamer From The UK they are brilliant also!!! So those 4 in no particular order are my toppers right now!
Thank you for supporting bands like Volume Conflict and Pedestrian Knockdown, we think they cool too and both bands are good friends of Fanbase Music Magazine and we are busy planning on featuring Skreamer soon in one of our upcoming issue, if you had the chance to put the ultimate top 10 playlist together, who would you include in the mix? “Top Ten Playlist “ ok so if I were trapped on a desert Island and could only have the music of ten bands with me, the list would look like this in NO PARTICULAR ORDER !! # 1) Lynyrd skynyrd #2 Stevie Ray Vaughn #3 Boston # 4 Black Sabbath #5 Metallica #6 Journey #7 Johnny Cash #8 Elvis #9 Nirvana #10 The Complete Works of J.S. Bach which is about 1200 songs :) You seem to have a passion for the Indie scene and its artists, just exactly what it is you do to help them and also what projects are you working on to further this development? Duzzy I have been “that guy” in “that band”, an Indie Artist will put 5000 dollars of equipment in a 300 dollar car and drive for 150 miles to make 50 dollars. That was me and the story is as old as music itself. Every single band worth an ounce of salt started as nothing. Every Nirvana every Elton John every Led Zeppelin started with no money and a big dream, some made it most didn't, but now at least in the States and I would imagine around the world, those chances of being “discovered” are all but gone. There is no chances left anymore, the record companies are not willing to advance 10’s of thousands of dollars to introduce a band to the world, it just doesn't happen anymore, “Why?” because no one is buying music anymore because it is relatively easy to acquire without paying for it. So the record companies have to revenue stream from this music. But here is the good news and here is what I am doing for these artists. Good news is if you are in a band that is good and if you follow some simple steps you CAN make it all by yourself, technology has advanced to the point where music can be mastered electronically and sound just as good as any 100,000 worth of studio from 10 years ago, so do this….. Most bands today still use studio professionals to “master” their music but the problem comes when they want to create an album of music to master. What should be done is practice and record 2 to 3 of your bands best songs pay to have one of the best mastered and now you are ready to make some money. You see the
old way you spent 5000 dollars mastering an album then you would pay another 1500 dollars to have 500 CD’s burned with nice cases and artwork and then you go play a show and make 500 to split between 6 people and try to sell your CD’s for 5 bucks a piece sell all 500 you will get 2500 back on your 6500 investment so you have made roughly 40% of your money back. Come on guys this is now YOUR business and need to be run as such so here is my plan. Have one song mastered use a branding and radio promotions company to submit that song to radio stations for airplay, if that one song starts to get airplay on let’s say, The BBC 1 you are on your way. One play on BBC 1, which is the largest Radio Company in the world, pays the artist about 300 Dollars in Royalties, now imagine your song getting 7 plays per day for 30 days you do the maths and that is one station. Imagine it playing on 300, 400, 4000 stations. Well you may say Doug how do you do that??? Here is the beauty of it, it just so happens I work for the largest radio branding company in the world and I mean 165,000 stations at the click of a mouse. T&C DURBAN VIBES
Happy New Year to all our readers and to all our local bands out there who support our magazine, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each reader of our magazine for supporting us and I know 2014 is going to be a great year for our local talent here in Durban shores. Just a little flash back of 2013. Tania and I started our first gig review in February with our talented musician Ard Matthews and this is where our love for the Fanbase Music Mag started. During this year we met our local bands. The Accidentals, Domain 8, Brad Knight, Rocke Kemp, Majozi, Hinds Brothers, Lieutenant Vinyl, Kick Stands, Minority for the masses, Adorned in Ash, Doxology, Dark Matter, Gus Brown Band, and Asleep in transit. We and the FanbaseMM team would like to thank each band for all their support and please feel free to contact us for a 2014 update report. Our Fanbase Music Magazine team has faithfully been running for 3 years and will for many more years to come, well done team.
BY: Tania Meyer Chantell vd Walt
A little highlight of this year was when our Durban Team arranged a Heaven vs. Hell Halloween at the Winston and we had a fun filled night, another big thank you to them for supporting the gig. Last but not least, the new highlight for 2014 is our Durban team gets to feature a band on the front cover of the February issue. So I would like to let all the local bands out there know that if you want exposure for your bands to contact us at Fanbase Music Magazine and we will do our best to help get your name out there. So this is a little challenge for our local bands, who wants to be 2014 February Magazines front page band? We also offer some advertising in our magazine at very reasonable rates, so please feel free to contact for your advertising needs.
Black Math is a 3 fronted band that has quite a unique sound of music that anyone can relate to. Don’t get me wrong the last two months we at Fanbase Music Magazine have been listening to a lot of heavy metal bands and doing gig reviews with metal/punk/ classic and dubstep, so listening to Black Math is quite a change. If our readers can remember in November this year, the Durban team arranged and put together a Heavens vs. Hell evening held at the Winston. Black Math was our last but totally amazing finishing act. So I put together a little interview with them to find out where this all started.
Hi guys, thanks for doing this interview, as you know you where one of our selected bands to finish the awesome evening with us at the Winston for “The Heaven VS Hell” gig, I would like to get to know the band a little more and I am sure our readers will love to know the start of this band named Black Math i.e. Who named the band and where does the name originate from? There is nothing too special about the name it’s a white stripes song, we like the song and thought it sounded cool. Tell our readers a bit about each band member and their contribution to the band? We are a trifecta made up of Cameron Lofstrand on guitar and vocals, Tyla Burnett on the bass and Acacia van Wyk who hits a cool beat on the drums. Tyla and Cameron began the band together along with our original drummer almost 5 years ago so we have a strong musical connection now and song writing comes easy to us now, Acacia knows what she’s doing so the process has become easy. We all write equally but Cam writes the lyrics.
How did your guys first ever show go and where did this event take place? Our first ever show in the Durban scene was at the German club in Westville with the Anti Retro Vinyl’s (the otherwise at the time) and the Trees and a few other bands and it went really well, surprisingly. Black Math is a very young looking band, what is your genre of music and where would you class yourself in the music world? We don’t like genres or sticking to them, we just write music and play what sounds good at the time , as a result our sound has changed a few times but we have settled into a "sound" that were all happy with. Seeing that you guys played for the Fanbase Music Magazine Heaven vs. Hell, were you surprised to find out we had asked you to join us for the show because of all the metal acts, did you guys get to hear the other bands play, and what did you think of all the bands that took the stage? It wasn’t that surprising actually we always get asked to play with metal bands, I think they appreciate the darker side of our songs that rock doesn’t usually have. Did we mention we love metal?
Continued on next page ………...
We would definitely interview the Butthole Surfers , were massively intrigued by that band there’s just something different about them. As for a band to perform with we would resurrect The D for much the same reason. What is the plan for 2014? Are we expecting an LP release soon? Where can our readers follow your music? As a matter of fact, we in the studio right now toiling away on our first real release, it should be ready quite soon. Facebook does the job if you want to find out shows and things otherwise sound cloud has all the songs we’ve recorded so far for free. - https://www.facebook.com/pages/BlackMath/162644847130775- https://soundcloud.com/blackmath-3
We would like to thank Black Math for the interview with us and good luck for New Year.

Venue Review ..ZACKS IN WINDERMERE
We found a new venue for our Fanbase Music Magazine, Karel Jordaan aka Beatle Gallagher and we were invited to do a gig review on him at the Zack’s in Windermere. Oh what a venue this was, sitting outside in the lovely cool wind we were lucky enough to be entertained by a small number of talented musicians. You can catch many more there every Friday for their open mic night. We had good company and great food, we were well taken care of by the staff and managers of Zack, and even though we can be a bit difficult these talented musicians entertained us to our hearts content. Steve Fataar of the Flames was one of the musicians who entertained us. He is a kickass drummer known well known for drum circles. We also noted there were quite a variety of people, I even had a chance to talk about our magazine to a couple who were all the way from Germany. I spread the Fanbase Music Magazine love and they promised me they will read the magazine. This is the night we also got a chance to listen to Karel Jordaan play. I was very impressed with the cover songs he played, just a pity it was time to leave. I would just like to thank Karel and the manager and staff at Zack’s in Windermere for a lovely time- keep up the good work! Please read interview I did with Karel in the magazine to find out more about this talented musicians. Many thanks and I know I will be visiting the venue again. Much love from our Durban Fanbase team. THANK YOU
Good evening my fellow band members of our famous darkest age. I thank you in advance for giving us this opportunity to get to do this great interview with the band. As our readers know your band took our stage at the Winston gig Heaven vs. Hell evening, and I can proudly say that you guys rocked the joint. “Darkest age Happy New year to you and the Fanbase Music Magazine team!! May it be a great year for both local music and the Magazine! And most of all a BIG THANK YOU for promoting local bands.
So let’s get to know the band a little. You guys are a four piece band, what is each band members name and the important part they play in the band?
Who is the longest band member in the Darkest Age, and which other bands have the members played for?
Darkest Age is a four piece Thrash metal band hailing from Durban. The lineup consist of founding member Dillen Hagan, rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Wesley Blake lead guitar and backing vocals, Rob Topping on drums and the latest edition to the band . Brynn Huxtable on bass guitar and backing vocals.
‘Some of our previous projects”
Where does heavy metal trash music come from?
Robb topping: Been on the scene for around 11 years. Fall out boy cover band, Paris Burning and currently in Divine Affliction as well as Darkest Age.
Thrash music was introduced to the world in the early 80s when the Big 4: Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer took what was going on and basically made it faster and heavier. Angry music for angst ridden teens. Though perfected by the Americans, it was first introduced by the British bands such as Angel witch, Saxan and Venom etc….these bands where known as the NWOBHM – New wave of British heavy metal.
Where can we find your music? At the moment the best way to hears us is to come see us live!! We have been busy with some scratch tracks and will start recording our EP toward the end of January 2014, we will also be doing a music video or 2 or 3.
Tell us something about the band that nobody knows of, not even the crazies fan. Darkest Age was started middle 2011……..but never ventured further than the band room. In 2012 we saw an almost complete lineup change bringing in Rob on the drums and Wesley on lead guitar. With a renewed sense of worth and excitement we got to writing and cranking out a set of worthy songs. Music that we not only enjoyed playing but listen to as well. But that to was short lived as on August 20th @6:15 in the evening 3 of us were robbed at gunpoint at our band room, we were told to lie on the floor as 3 armed gun men rummaged through our cars and gears before loading up a drum hardware guitar and bass amps, cell phones, wallets etc, so we had to move the band room after that ordeal. Thank fully and with vigilant work from the detectives, our gear was found a month later at a drug den in Marion Ridge near Pinetown. We then looked for a new band room and only secured one in December 2012. So once we got settled into our new room, we were able to get creative again. We then played our first show in March of 2013, and have been kicking ass ever since Ha Ha
Dillen Hagan: Vie been playing in bands for around 14years. Divinity denied, Blackened, Chaos Bleeds, Arise to Conquer, currently in a punk/rock band called Bad Murphy and of course Darkest Age. Wesley Blakes: Been on the band scene for around 7 years, playing in bands like Bullet for my Valentine tribute band, Burden at the gates, Arise to conquer.
Brynn Huxtable: Been on the band scene since 2006, bands consisting of: Code of Silence, Pledge Defiance and is currently drummer in Iraqi Death Police and Darkest Age.
What are your plans for 2014 This is going to be a busy year for us, Wesley is currently busy with our webpage, our recordings are on the way and we have a Facebook page and you will be able to follow us on Twitter soon.
Who inspires you to create your music? We draw inspiration from wherever we can, we love beautiful classical pieces to the heaviest of chugging rhythms, but as far as who we look up to its easy Ha Ha, Testament, Pantera, Annihilator, Revocation, Metallica and we could go on all day.
So who is married, in love, and seeing stars? We are all in long time relationships, Dillen is married and Wes, Rob and Brynn all have long term girlfriends.
Besides music what day jobs are required by Darkest age members to fulfil their hobbies and dreams? We all have careers: Rob is the brains of the operations, he’s a lawyer, Wes is in IT, Brynn is music and Dillen is a sales consultant.
OK as you know we as Durban Fanbase Music Magazine get the opportunity to do front page February 2014, so if not you on that front page, what other bands would you suggest? We would be honored to be on the front page of the February edition….But if not us possibly Bad Murphy or Divine Affliction.
Thank you again for chatting with us and we wish you guys a healthy New Years and we are sure to chat soon again.
The Durban Vibes Team managed to squeeze a good interview in with Karel Jordaan or otherwise better known as Beatle Gallagher, and this is what we got to chat about. Be sure to check out our gig review of this unique musician after this interview. Enjoy the interview!!! Interview by : Chantel van der Walt & Tania Meyer Hi Karel, where did your interest for music start, and who inspired you? I’m 32 now but my interest in music started at the age of 16 when I was inspired to learn guitar the first time I heard Just Jinjer play songs. “Father and Father” and “Shallow waters” inspired me to play guitar. My dad played a bit of guitar so I just picked up his guitar one day and decided to play and basically taught myself from there. Your stage name is Beatle Gallagher, how did that come about? I use the name Beatle Gallagher as a stage name because somehow I don’t think the name Karel Jordaan is going to fit to well in the genre of music I choose to perform. We got to see your talent at the Venue Zack's in Windemere, how did this all start for you? Friday nights is open mic nights at Zack' Windemere with the Legendary Steve Fataar of the Flames who hosts the evening, so you can pretty much end up playing with anyone on the night really. It’s very random so there’s never really a set line up.
I remember you where the drummer for a popular local band Small town Heroes tells us about that? Yeah Small Town Heroes was an awesome band that consisted of Mark Cholerton on lead vocals, John Benecke on Bass and we had John “Scoop”Randall who also joined us on many occasions on rhythm guitar, I played drums in the band. We recorded a full length album in 2010 which we funded ourselves over the 2 years that we were together. The band unfortunately split up at the end 2010 after our lead singer left for the UK. We did some awesome gigs over the time we were together supporting and playing with bands like Catlike Thieves, The Parlotones and at the ECR Durban day in 2010 we were on the same bill with Jessy Clegg, Prime Circle, Just Jinjer and many more. Do you have any plans for 2014, and where it will take you? In 2014 I am looking to do as many gigs as possible, but also to try residency somewhere at a bar or pub in Durban so I can have my own stage to do as I please, no time limits or limited set list. I will also be recording some more original tunes which I will sneak in occasionally among my set of cover songs that I do. I will also be looking to put a band together because at the moment I am a one man band.
Where can our Fanbase readers find you and your music? I have a page on Facebook where you can find me, but you will have to search for me under the name Beatle Gallagher though. I am also on Ttwitter under the name Beatle Gallagher and then I have a page on Reverbnation.com where you can listen to some of my original tunes. Do you write your own music and do you perform any favorite cover songs? I do write my own songs yes and I always do at least 1 Oasis song in my set list because as a singer/songwriter oasis is probably my biggest influence. Other cover songs I usually do are songs like Angels from Robbie Williams, Two steps behind you from Def leppard and even a bit of Matchbox20 and Lenny Kravits. Besides Zack's, where can we find you to entertain us? I play quite often at Harlequins on the Bluff and here is where I played for the first time, other than that that I’ve played at Jack Rabbits morning side, Jackie Horn Pub, Giba Gorge and at Friends in Hillcrest when they will still there. What other instruments do you play? I played the guitar at 16 and learned the drums at the age of 17, but other than that I don’t really focus on any other instruments.
Thank you Beatle Gallagher and I truly hope our Fanbase Music Magazine can get your name out there! Thank you for your time
“and in other news” Axl Rose pays rent for an apartment but never spent a night there While rockers are known to trash rooms, a New York based landlord has nothing but high praise for his onetime tenant Axl Rose. However, there is a caveat to his recommendation — the Guns N’ Roses rocker may have never set foot in his apartment. In a piece on Vulture.com, Steve Fishman details his stint as Rose’s landlord, calling him “the best tenant ever.” As the story goes, Rose reportedly was looking to move from Malibu to New York and found the perfect place in Fishman’s Tribeca apartment. The owner describes it as “a place without glaring sunlight, but with lots of space.” He recalls, “Axl came by to see the apartment twice. Once my wife was there, and she reported that he played enthusiastically with our dog and snorted at people who liked spaced ‘bathed in light’ as the realtors say. He loved the place.” Fishman reveals that Rose agreed to pay an extraordinary rent for the apartment and that he and his wife moved out quickly so that the singer could move in, but here’s where things get weird. “[Move-in day came] … and then it went. So did the second and a third date. Still Axl didn’t move in,” recalls Fishman. “My family and I followed Axl’s travels via Google alerts — he was touring in Abu Dhabi and playing a birthday party in Russia. We were repeatedly told by his very nice assistants, a mother and son team, that he was definitely planning to move to New York, which we were informed he’d fallen in love with.” But at the one-year mark, there was no sign that Rose had ever occupied the apartment. Still, the rocker renewed the lease and did so with an increased rent. The landlord adds, “As far as I can tell, Axl never set foot in my place after his initial viewings. I wondered if he remembered that he’d rented it … Still, the rent checks kept coming, which is all I cared about.” When a potential third year arrived in early 2013, Rose’s management decided not to renew, ending the singer’s “ghost” rental at two years. Fishman concludes, “People have mixed views of Axl Rose, but as a landlord, I loved him. If he ever needs a recommendation, I’ll happily write: Quiet, undemanding and he pays his rent.”
Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison insists he didn’t quit the band Towards the end of 2013 Slipknot fans were told of the disappointing news that Slipknot and drummer Joey Jordison have parted ways, although details was and is still sketchy, we were under the influence that it was a decision made my Joey to leave the band, but in a recent statement made by the drummer, it is apparently not true. On his Facebook page, Jordison made his first public comments since the surprising announcement, insisting he did not quit the band and that he was ‘shocked and blindsided’ by the decision. Just like Slipknot did in their original statement, Jordison informed fans that he wasn’t at liberty to go into detail about his exit from the band at this time, but his revelation does shed a new light on his departure from the group. His full statement reads as follows: To my fans, friends, and associates… I would like to start the New Year by addressing the recent rumors and speculation regarding my departure from Slipknot. I want to make it very clear that I DID NOT QUIT SLIPKNOT. This band has been my life for the last 18 years, and I would never abandon it, or my fans. This news has shocked and blindsided me as much as it has all of you. While there is much I would like to say, I must remain silent to further details at this time. I would like to thank you all for your unwavering love and support, and wish everyone a very happy and healthy New Year. As previously reported, Slipknot frontman Corey Taylor addressed the issue in his first interview following the announcement of Jordison’s departure. “It’s still so fresh and there’s a lot of things going on behind the scenes that people don’t know about, so legally and respectfully, I can’t say a lot about it,” Taylor told Minneapolis radio station 93X. “I can confirm that we have parted ways with Joey and as soon as we can say something, we will, but we’re trying to protect him, trying to protect us, just making sure that we do everything right because that’s what we would expect from ourselves and what we would expect from the fans.” Stay tuned to Fanbase Music Magazine as we will bring you more info as this story unfolds

Triston Smith from Volume Conflict in a car accident It seems like 2013 ended off on a bad note for Volume Conflict’s Triston Smith, as he was involved in a bad car accident. According to the bands Facebook page, VC’s manager Elaine Constantine commented and said while Triston was driving, the stabilizer broke and the wheel fell out. He was then flung over to the other side of the road into some bushes. An on looker who helped him out said it is a miracle the car did not over turn, Thankfully Triston managed to get out unscathed although the car is unfortunately a write off. Volume Conflict has signed with North Atlantic records and will be heading to Ireland early this year to record their debut album which will be called Strawman. 2013 may have ended on a bad note but I have a good feeling 2014 is going to be an awesome year for the band. Fanbase will be doing an exclusive interview before the boys jet off to Ireland so watch this space.
OLD CAPE FARMHOUSE featuring GUY COLLINS & THE SUITCASE HEARTS review and photos by Rene Parkin Maritz Saturday 28 December 2013 couldn’t come fast enough for me and my friends. The 'Farmhouse Rocks' (Cape Farmhouse) was officially opening for the summer season and they were kicking off with Guy Collins of Mean Black Mamba fame and The Suitcase Hearts. It was my first visit to the Farmhouse and what a pleasant surprise awaited us.
Sunshine completed a picture perfect setting with the mountain on the right and big shady trees on the left. People surrounded the venue – all enjoying the beauty of the day. The menu includes scrumptious burgers and pizzas freshly made on the spot and there is a licensed bar available. Earlier this year at the Baxter Theatre, while watching the Cape Town Folk Festival, a man suddenly walked onto the stage, it was Guy Collins. From the moment he started singing and playing the banjo, his music touched me to the core. His music made me think of ‘Skip James’ and the like. Guy Collins has a voice which captures the essence of blues and his style has a rhythmically vibrant feel to it. Not only does his voice live long in your memory, but his guitar playing leaves you wanting more. Shortly after this I established that Guy is in a band called ‘Mean Black Mamba’. Upon hearing that Guy would be at the Cape Farmhouse, I decided it was time to yet again experience the ‘Blue’s guy' - Guy Collins. Guy’s music infiltrates your soul, but it doesn’t end there. A change happens within you and it feels like both your soul and body are dancing together in unison. Simon Orange did a great job of accompanying Guy on keyboard. My friends and I decided to go and chat to Guy after his performance, and I officially met the man behind the music, who is genuine and such a down to earth person. I purchased the new CD by ‘Mean Black Mamba’ – music that lives up to its name.
“It literally feels like the music slithers and crawls through your body - an internal shaking takes place reaching each and every part of you. This is the music of 'Mean Black Mamba'.
“Watching people dancing all around me a feeling of lightheartedness filled me....a moment suspended in time”. I have yet to see them perform as a band and I can only imagine what an experience it will be. To find out more about Mean Black Mamba, check out their Facebook site here: https://www.facebook.com/meanblackmamba Music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crEP8CVe0S0 Website: http://www.meanblackmamba.com/
Next up was The Suitcase Heart – consisting of Simon Annett; Bood Carver; Brydon Bolton; Douglas Armstrong; Ilse Lotz; Kyla-Rose Smith (Freshly Ground); Dean Pienaar - a seven-piece band. The Suitcase Hearts are known for playing a mixture of all influences, ranging from Country to Blues, Jazz and Folk. Officially known as a Country Dub Band, they wooed the crowd with their wonderful sound and we just couldn’t get enough of their tunes, clapping and dancing merrily and singing along to the music.
Born to entertain The Suitcase Hearts are a dynamic group. Find out more about them here: https://www.facebook.com/ TheSuitcaseHearts
“Watching people dancing all around me a feeling of lightheartedness filled me....a moment suspended in time”. Sitting there surrounded by people chatting excitedly, birds chirping high in the trees, and children playing gaily all around, I was evoked by a feeling of community. We left with a feeling of euphoria and at times like these I’m so thankful to be alive. The experience of what the afternoon encapsulated – sweet beautiful music, friendship, food, and nature – was all a person could want, nothing more, nothing less. I will visiting the charm and country life i.e. the Cape Farmhouse again. Find out more about upcoming events on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ capefarmhouserocks

Hi Gina, thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music Magazine, can you tell us how it all started and at what age you started music? I started professionally this year (2013) though I have been singing since the age of 3, and have always had a passion for it. I also learnt how to play different instruments as the years progressed.
Do you come from a musical background? Yes ,my Mother sang. She has a beautiful voice and sang lead in her high school musicals though she never pursued it. Other than that I am the only one in my family taking it to a professional level.
You are an awesome songwriter, where do you get your inspiration from? I draw inspiration from scenarios that people can relate to. I have done this in my first two songs “Indescribable” and “VIVA.” “Indescribable” is about a very corny high school crush, I tried to write something cute that appeals to girls. My third song “How about now” relates to personal experiences.
Apart from your awesome voice, what other talents do you have, do you play an instrument? I play 3 instruments; I play the guitar, piano and I also mess around on the drums.
With you getting bigger now and making a name for yourself, will you always be a solo performer or will you ever join a band? I would prefer to stay as a solo performer, because bands tend to break up but if an opportunity arises I am open to ideas.
You are only 16, do you feel your age has stopped you from any opportunities? No, I think age is but a number. Though being a minor you are restricted to certain boundaries.
How do you juggle your school work and your music career at the same time, do you neglect one or the other? I tend to manage just fine, it hasn’t interfered with the school work yet because I have been concentrating on my music in the holidays. During school time I work on my music at night and on the weekends.
Speaking about recording, you have been busy in the recording studio, can you tell us where you have been recording and how have the recordings been coming along? It all started when my singing teacher Anjulie Nock listened to some of my original songs and called her friend Helmut Meijer for Helmut Meijer Music Productions. After playing my songs to him he decided he would like to record me and so far we’ve recorded three singles.
Where can we hear your music? My first two singles are out on iTunes and my third single has not been released to the public yet. I also have a Facebook page called “Gina Marie” where you can see my band page and YouTube page as well as everything that I have done so far.
You have been getting quite a bit of air play with your 1st single “Indescribable” on Zone Radio, just how important are radio stations like Zone Radio, who do so much for South African Music, for your career? I think any kind of social networking is very important to reach your fans and have a connection with them. Zone Radio has helped me a lot but giving me some exposure. If it weren’t for them featuring me on air I wouldn’t be doing this interview.
What gigs have you done before? I have mainly performed at my school, we have a battle of the bands competition and I competed last year and my band won. I have also been a part of the “Pops Concert” that takes place once every year at my school, Somerset College. About 40 bands audition and only 20 get in.
Do you get nervous before a gig? I think everybody does but the more you do it the more you get used to it. At the beginning I always get this feeling of ‘Will I get the words right? Will I fall on stage? What if I drop the mic?’ but it’s a wonderful feeling once you get on stage and you know this is where you want to be, this is what you love to do.
If I was to go to one of your gigs what would I experience, do you dance on stage etc? It depends on the song, if it’s slow then I wouldn’t be jumping around like a crazy child but if it’s a fast and fun then I would dance and try to get the crowd involved. I like to dance on stage because I think it’s a bit boring to watch if you just stand there and sing into a mic. My aim is to put on a show people will enjoy and remember.
Do you foresee later on in your career when you are as big as Prime Circle, will you still do weddings and school concerts and go back to your roots? I think it will be really cool if you get that far and then come back to your roots. It’s important to acknowledge where you started and what your base was. After all those are the things that make you the person you are today.
What does the future hold for you, where can we catch you gigging 2014? Well so far I will be in Fanbase Music Magazine in January and on the 28th of February I will be performing with Lional Bastos at the Hill&Dale Sun Downers picnic concerts and Zone Radio will broadcast it live from there.

Gigg Review
Prime Circle Birthday Bash As the skies closed and grew dark, the clouds decided to share with us huge storm, I arrived at the Scarlet Ribbon. With it raining outside the venue staff organised everyone into the venue very quickly. Upon entering I found staff friendly and the bar staff was on fire with having drinks served in no time. As the band opened on stage the crowd drew closer and the energy just exploded in the venue. The sound engineers performed dark magic tweaking everything to perfection. With my skin covered in millions of goose bumps and my ears wanting more the stage performance was mind blowing as they drew this broad spectrum crowd in to a trance of bliss. Prime Circle sounded better live! The crowd interacted at every turn and joined the band with new and old songs raising hands and lighters into the air. With it being the Prime Circle 13th year Birthday bash, the band gave thanks to all the people who assisted on their path to success. Prime Circle’s stage presence is so awesome and they interacted with photographers at every turn. I will truly recommend anyone one to see this band. Thank you guys for an epic show! We want to give a huge shout out to Total Exposure who provided us with the Press passes to this amazing gig. We would also like to wish Prime Circle a great 13th Birthday, it was awesome to be able to spend it with you. We look forward to being rocked by you for many more years to come.

How did you get into photography? Well, my Dad is a photographer and my whole family is artists so I guess I basically grew up around it. I first started taking photos of bands and that is still one of my main styles but when I started watching things like Americas Next Top Model I fell in love with crazy dramatic themed shoots and started to take photography seriously. What camera are you currently using? I am using the Nikon D3200. Why do you like Photography? It is a way to make the crazy of my mind come to life. Taking a moment and freezing it, making it art.
What style of Photography do you like? I will always love to shoot live bands as no other style gets as exciting as that. But I love the crazy and wild ideas of editorial and the intense and pure feel of black and white portraiture.
Where do you see yourself in five years, in terms of your photography? I aim to open my own studio and also rent it out to other photographers. The end goal is to open a music studio alongside it as music is my other passion.
Who is your favourite photographer and why? I love Anzel Adams’s black and white work and Jez Smith’s versatility. What advice do you have for upcoming photographers? Patience and practice is key, just keep taking photos of anything and everything. Keep building your portfolio and remember no one became successful overnight. How can people get hold of you? DOWN TO THE RIVER – A BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN AND UP THE CREEK FESTIVAL GIVE AWAY: Up The Creek organisers, Annie and Anthony, get nostalgic about The Boss’s return to Africa: “The year was 1988. A very bleak time in our country. As outcasts in the international world, not only were economic sanctions applied but local South Africans were deprived of sporting opportunities and the opportunity to listen to international music acts. Some of us music lovers got to hear that Bruce Springsteen would be appearing in Harare for a concert later that year. That was all the impetus we needed to get our butts to Zimbabwe as fast as we could. Hiring a 10-seater plane we flew from Joburg, landing in Harare. It was my first time in this beautiful country and I distinctly remember making our way from the airport to the stadium driving down a gorgeous jacaranda lined avenue with the sun, a huge orange ball, setting in the sky. It was oh so hot and the evening was filled with promise………”read the whole story and how The Boss welcomed the South Africans at his show here: http://www.upthecreek.co.za/down-to-the-river-a-bruce-springsteen-

Jack Iver & Benjamin Hound – Dripping Sin Writers / Vocals / Guitars : Jack Iver & Benjamin Hound Drums : Etienne Fourie Benjamin Hound (former frontman of Dogtown) & Jack Iver came together to create “Dripping Sin”, a song with a propulsive chorus aided by an overall tempo which surges and recedes in harmony. Designed to attract a wide variety of audience, these two vastly different musicians merged their musical backgrounds to create a unique sound. “We wanted to write a simple, vocally driven song that sounds a bit rough! We’re just two friends, who
sat down and decided to do a song for fun. We took 3 days to create 'Dripping sin' and this is what we came up with.” - Benjamin Hound
“The main idea behind 'Dripping Sin' is analogous to the bad decisions we make whilst calling ourselves
good people. Whether you believe your own comforting illusion is irrelevant. As long as everyone else thinks your licitly sane then so it shall be. In our natural state of hedonistic decadence, the song plainly states, it might be wrong, but god damn its good.” – Jack Iver

Tickets Computicket The launch of music channel MTV on 1 August 1981 led to a creative explosion of sight and sound that turned the music industry on its head. No longer were people content to simply hear their favourite musicians, they had to see them too. Now, in a tribute to the incredible culture of music videos that revolutionised the pop music industry and created a new platform for video art, producer Cedric Vandenschrik will perform his new show, “Video Killed the Radio Star” at the GrandWest Roxy Revue Bar every Wednesday to Saturday from 22 November to 11 January 2014.
The talented cast will showcase the years of cutting-edge videos, from the 80s through to the 90s, when creative teams experimented to produce the most unique and memorable video’s, and MTV served as the music video headquarters for the pop music world. To an extent, Video did kill the radio, at least as a way of promoting new music, and the slogan “I want my MTV” was the order of the day throughout the world, even here, on our own SABC! Artists such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, A-ha, Peter Gabriel, Tina Turner, Cindy Lauper, Dire Straits and so many more all became associated with their videos. Bringing back these performances will be vocalists Riyaan Cornelius and Lee Rath, keyboardists Tracy Johannes and Chad Zerf, who also performs vocals, drummer Adam Coolsaet, bassist Alex Mayers and guitarist Andre Ferreira. Shaun Johannes will supply musical direction. The audience will be treated to a visual and musical feast of catchy hits such as Madonna’s Material Girl, Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer, Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love, Duran Duran’s Wild Boys and Cindy Lauper’s anthem Girls Just Wanna have Fun, to name a few. The doors open at 8pm and the curtain rises at 8.30pm. Tickets are available from Computicket at R90 and in the words of introduction of that first broadcast in 1981:

Sonar, Barcelona’s International Festival of Advanced Music and New Media Art, heads to Cape Town in December 2014 Hailing from Barcelona and celebrating its 21st year, Sonar is a pioneering advanced music and new media festival with unique content and a format that combines the best local and international electronic music acts with interactive technology exhibits and new media showcases. Sonar has been constantly on the pulse of the current electronic music landscape and delivers experimentations with music’s newest trends, presenting fused collaborations between established artists and emerging talent. Since 2002, Sonar has hosted more than 50 festivals in all corners of the globe, all imbued with the festival’s philosophy of physical spaces and unique environments hosting a balanced mix of the best talent from the international and local music scene. Award-winning agency, Seed Experiences, will bring Sonar to South Africa on an annual basis, with the inaugural event scheduled for 16 December 2014 at the iconic Good Hope Centre in Cape Town. Cape Town’s recent accolade of World Design Capital 2014 makes it the natural city of choice for Sonar’s South African stop and, along with Barcelona, Tokyo, Reykjavik and Mexico, will make up the quintuplet of cities to host Sonar in 2014. Cape Town’s instalment will comprise an explosive mix of South Africa’s top electronic acts, headlined by one or two of the biggest international names. Ventura Barba, COO of Advanced Music, the company behind Sonar, comments, “Now part of Sonar, Cape Town joins a global music network, cementing its place in Electronic Music Culture (EMC). One of Sonar’s philosophies is to discover talent in new markets and give the artist or DJ the opportunity to perform at one of the global Sonar events. We’re looking forward to scouting South Africa’s acts and giving fresh talent the opportunity to perform at Sonar around the world.” Brian Little, managing director of Seed Experiences, explains the process behind the launch, “In order to ensure that the tour stays true to the essence of the Sonar brand, the entire Seed Experiences team travelled to Barcelona this June to gain insight into the event’s roll-out. We met with the production, marketing, sponsorship and artist liaison teams in order to launch a South African instalment that mirrors the international brand, while ensuring its relevance within the local context.”
Staying true to the design theme, Sonar Cape Town will take place at the Good Hope Centre, breathing life into the uniquely designed 1970s iconic architectural landmark and injecting it with a “cultural twist”. As Sonar is an internationally recognised festival brand that has grown solidly over more than 20 years, one can imagine its modest roots and look forward to seeing its newest host city, Cape Town, mirror the journey.
