ippie itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s my Birthday month. I love the month of March hehe,

but not only is it my birthday month, this is also the month of Ramfest, and what a great line up we have this year. In the spirit of Ramfest, The full metal panic team has featured a band that is going to be playing at Ramfest, All Guns Full Ammo is our front cover band this month. So go check that out. Speaking of Full Metal Panic they also feature a few other awesome bands, but there is too much to mention so just go check it out for yourself, I would like to take this opportunity to give you some sad news from the Full Metal Panic team, but at the same time it is an exciting time for the team. They have decided to go on their own and start a new magazine. As sad as this is for Fanbase Music Magazine to see them go, we wish Ryno and the team well and we hope the future is a success, having said all that, they are not leaving us just yet. They will be appearing in the April issue, after Ramfest, for the last time so we look forward to that. Ladies and gentleman I would like to introduce to you a new section in the mag, we now have a Fanbase Model of the month, which will be run by a lady by the name of Danni Lombard - welcome to the team Danni we are chuffed to have you on board. The Durban Vibes team has also been busy this month, with features on reviews of Gangs of Ballet, an interview with the awesome Byron Love. They also speak of a cool show which is going to be happening, A Pink Floyd Tribute, so go read all about that. I interview some awesome musicians, Melisa de Aveiro being one of them, and then a South African band who have relocated to the UK by the name of Munkinpure. There is so much happening in this issue that I know I have forgotten to mention a lot of it, so best you just flip the pages and read it all yourself. Hi Melissa, thanks for featuring in Fanbase Music Magazine; let’s start from the beginning, where did it all start for you a musician? Born in Johannesburg 28 September 1981. Moved to the West Coast as a young child with parents and sister. I grew up in a small town called Vredendal. My love for music was a part of my soul since I can remember. The only thing I ever wanted to do was sing and play a guitar. At the age of 15, I started singing in the church, taught myself to play the drums. Music always moved me from a very young age, I could feel something move inside me when I sing. The reason I started to sing was because I could always just escape to a world where everything makes sense. I always imagined thousands of people coming to hear me sing. I believe music is the international language of love. I sing everything that I feel, as a difficult teenager; it helped me cope with the turmoil of emotions. I would sing, then people would listen, only then I felt ‘heard’ and ‘understood’ I started playing guitar, and there is where it happened, I fell in love with my six string I am drawn by humbleness, and driven by Grace. I was just a girl, with a guitar and a dream, waiting for someone to give me a chance to touch the hearts of others.

Did you come from a musical background? There are many talented people in my family, not all specifically music, but certainly a creative family.

What genre of music would you classify your sound in? Blues Rock and Soul.

You are a great songwriter, where do you get your inspiration from? Your song, “Daughter of a preacher man” is doing quite well on radio stations especially on Zone Radio, can you tell me how that song came about, it’s obvious your father is a preacher and you are no saint, but what are you saying in that song? With reference to ‘No Saint’ and all my other songs:I've walked a million miles, tasted all the ‘wines’, I can sing the blues, cause I've lived the blues... My music is my life story, of love, hate, hurt, hope and then the saving Grace. ‘I'm a daughter of a preacher man ,but I ain’t no saint’ Speaking of Zone Radio, they support South African music in a big way, just how important is Zone Radio and other radio stations like them for a musicians career? Radio is of paramount importance to any musician with regard to exposure. Zone Radio specifically is amazing. I respect their vision and everything they do for SA Music and Musicians. The label that I am signed to, Stone Studios International, support them and echo their mission statement perfectly. Non terrestrial radio stations are growing stronger by the day and rightfully so, we understand that they do not earn the revenue from advertising that the land based radio stations do but I sincerely believe that it is only a matter of time, as technology advances, for them to become the giants in the industry. Yes I cannot turn the radio in my car on and listen to Zone Radio yet, but I believe that technological advances will soon make it possible without any doubt at all. Non terrestrial stations give the listener the choice of what exactly it is they want to listen to, it is not commercially driven by what the station managers deem ‘what the public want to hear’ On Zone Radio EVERY artist in this country has a voice, is this not ultimately what we should strive for? I am a Zoniac, and so are all the artists at Stone Studios, and very proud of it and will be an advocate for them till I drop J. You are a great performer and have often said that you like to suss the crowd out first and don’t always have a setlist planned so you can see what kind of crowd you playing for then you pay songs accordingly, can you tell us a bit more about that? The CEO of my label said something profoundly true a while ago, ‘It is no longer about just good music, it is about good entertainment’ I believe that it is of the utmost importance to entertain the crowd that you are performing to. It is not difficult to see which songs, or types of songs they respond better to and then I take it from there.

Do you get nervous before a gig and do you have any rituals you do before a gig? Nervous, certainly I do, I believe that any artist serious about their craft, gets nervous. In South Africa we happen to have one of the hardest audiences to please. Our audiences are not swept away by big media hype when it comes to South African artists; the proof for SA audiences is in the pudding. You have to respect them, understand the many diverse cultures and on the night/day very quickly work out what it is that they are in the mood for. We have many South Africans that will pay any price to see an international artist perform, for us to enjoy the same loyalty, we have to make sure that we can entertain and be as good at our craft as the international artists that come here to perform, nothing less is good enough for our people. My only ritual is to ask for guidance and grace form above. How do you keep your voice in good shape? By singing, practicing and not abusing my voice, it should be every artistâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fear to develop nodules through bad use of our voices, not warming up, not staying vocally fit. Can you name some of your achievements as a musician? I sincerely believe that I have touched the lives of some people in need of reassurance during music sessions while doing my work as a motivational speaker through my music . The achievement that I am tremendously proud of, is having been noticed by my label. We have completed four songs towards my album, the rest of the songs will be done soon, I am 3rd in the current row of phenomenal artists awaiting our turn to get back into studio with our amazing producer Rudi Massyn. We all graciously stepped back for 2 artists that have to leave for America soon.

Wow it looks like Big Concerts has done it again, they successfully brought out yet another great musician and one word comes to mind when I think about Santana, LEGEND! As the day arrived I looked out the window to see what the weather is looking like for this show, and I was rather disappointed to say it was raining and miserable, hoping it wouldn’t put a damper on the awesome show expected later on that day I hoped the weather would clear by the evening and it did, just in time for the show with just a few light drizzles here and there. I invited Bronwen Kerry from B sharp entertainment to accompany me as I had an extra ticket and knew she would really enjoy a show like Santana. (Speaking of B Sharp entertainment please go check them out on Facebook and Twitter and check out their website where they have some really great music news and interviews.) Bronwen and I made our way to the stadium at about 5 pm and lucky there wasn’t too much traffic along the way. I am not one to complain and this is probably the only bit of complaining I will do for this review, but getting shown to our parking space and as well as our seats was a bit of a nightmare, the staff helping the crowds with this topic sent us on a bit of goose chase on where to go, first with getting to our parking space and then being shown to where we have to be seated, and with myself being on crutches it was a bit hard walking around the stadium up and down ramps with no one really knowing where we must be seated. (Just a bit of annoyance before the show, but thankfully not a huge biggie) After eventually finding our seat, we could relax again and await the great show which was about to start and what a great show it was. First up was another legend in his own right, Johnny Clegg. This was my first time seeing this great musician live and I must say I was pleasantly surprised, if Nelson Mandela was South Africa’s Tata then Johnny Clegg is definnitely Indodana ye Afrika (South Africa’s Son). I have always loved bands and musicians which are proudly South African, merging the white and black racial stigma and making them one, I believe Mango Groove have done a similar thing and so has FreshlyGround, but it was nice to finally experience the great Johnny Clegg doing the same with his White ways doing Zulu things, often dubbed as the White Zulu and I can see why. Johnny and his band put on a great show with a lot of Zulu Dancing in the set. It’s a weird but somewhat liberating experience seeing a white man doing Zulu dances and paying so much respect to his country and its many different cultures. He played all his well-known tracks from “Impi” all the way to “Searching for the spirit of the great heart” with everything in between, I must say I was a skeptic about Johnny Clegg being the opening act for Santana but now I can safely say the organizers knew what they were doing by putting him as the opening act. It was a great way to get the evening started.

So after a great set by Johnny Clegg and his band, it was time for a short break while the stage crew got ready for the next musician on stage, SANTANA. It was a great time to get more drinks and I settled on a packet of chips to fill my hunger. Luckily the line was not too busy and my trusty gig partner Bronwen (Who offered to go buy some drinks and snacks before Santana took the stage) was able to get back just before he took to the stage. By now the stadium was really filling up and most of the chairs on the field that we looked upon were full, the side of the stadium that we were seated was also very full with just a few empty chairs here and there. Then came the moment we were all waiting for. The lights on the crowd goes out and the stage lights up. The band begins to play, and before I go on about Carlos Santana coming on stage, I would like to pause and just give a huge shout out to the Santana band, each member is very talented and awesome at what they do, from the drummers to the keyboardist to the guitarists and bass guitarists. They are all amazing musicians and helped to put on a great show, and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even get me started on the bongo drummer player, makes me wonder how his hands didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get sore playing those bongos perfectly and quite fast. Anyway back to the man of the moment, Carlos Santana takes to the stage, with his orange six string and dressed in white. There are certain guitarists that play, that when you hear them play you can immediately hear it is them, almost like they got a signature way of playing, and the way Santana plays his guitar sounds familiar and so smooth but yet such a honor to witness it in person.

Now for those of you who are not familiar with Santana, he doesn’t do much singing, yes he does a few vocals here and there and does back up singing but his role is to play the guitar, and play it very well. Which gives me this chance to congratulate the vocalists he did have on board singing the songs, they did an awesome job. Every lead solo Carlos Santana did was done with perfection and passion. You can see this man knows his stuff, making all kinds of sounds come out of his guitar, playing songs such as “Black Magic woman”, “Maria Maria” or “Smooth” which was originally done by Santana and Rob Thomas. This show had it all. The bass guitarists even did a cover instrumental on just his bass guitar on a John Lennon classic “Imagine”

I love it when a musician interacts with a crowd and Santana really spoke to the crowd in a good way. He even requested from the security by saying that if the crowd wants to get up and dance, they must let them do it, because without the crowd, the security wouldn’t have a job, and Santana himself wouldn’t have a gig, so let the people dance… I really liked that he said if the security would let them, the band would play till 6am the next morning, that just really shows the passion and dedication Santana and his band have and you can see it in his music. A great historic moment was when Johnny Clegg came back on stage joining Santana on a few songs, and this was definitely one of the highlights of the show for me. So all in all it was a great show all around and I am so happy I was lucky enough to be there. I would like to thank Dionne DomyanMudie from Publicity Works, Big Concerts and FNB stadium for bringing out yet another great artist. There are at least 3 musicians I would loved/ love to see live from the Woodstock days, Jimi Hendrix, Gary Moore, which have unfortunately all passed on so no chance of that happening, I can officially at least tick off one of the 3 and say I saw Carlos Santana play live and he rocked Johannesburg City.

Nitro Circus Johannesburg review Review by : Duwyne Clayton Photography by: Crystal Rees-Gibbs Photography

Wow, wow, wow, Nitro Circus… Equals INSANE!!! You would not believe the tricks these guys got up to. Ramping from a 50 meters ramp, these daredevils were ramping with anything from motorbikes, to normal BMX bikes, to skateboards to your more insane choice of ramping transportation like a bathtub, a couch and even a wheel barrow at one stage. According to statistics, this show at the Johannesburg FNB Stadium was the biggest crowd Nitro Circus has ever performed for in its 4 years existence, beating its record of past capacity crowd 28 000 to a crazy 35 000 pushing through the gates of Soccer City to witness this awesome event. FNB being the last leg of this South African tour, Cape Town and Durban were also sold out shows making this S.A tour a very successful one. A sport like this can be a very dangerous one and this proved to be true as one of the stunts dare devil tried a trick that he apparently broke his leg on two different occasions. Lucky when he attempted it on this night in South African, everything went smoothly and he landed his double backflip trick perfectly. Seeing them do these tricks and do it well, makes me think that they must do hours and hours of practice and I would think even if you have done the trick a million times, you would still have to do every safety check and you must still say a prayer before each jump, and not to mention how fit you must be because one thing that amazed me was these guys would run a 50 feet worth of stairs to get to the top of the ramp carrying their mode of transport all the way up to the top, just to come down the ramp again, then running up the steps to the top to do it all over again. It’s hard to pick out who did the best tricks and stunts on the night, could it be the guy who broke his leg twice before and still came to South Africa to try the same trick and did it successfully, could it be the female who also suffered an injury before but still came out to South Africa to do this daring dangerous stunts. All of them and others were impressive but there is one person who stands out to me as amazing, and that is the one stuntman nick named wheels, why is he called wheels I hear you ask? Well that is because he is in a wheelchair but he still comes down the ramp, does a black flip in the air in his wheel chair and lands on his wheels. It just shows you can do anything if you put your mind to it. So all in all it was a very great exciting show and I highly recommend everyone to see this show at least once in their lifetime. It’s definitely a show for the whole family Thank you Dionne Doyman for hooking Fanbase Music magazine up with press passes for this event and well done to Big Concerts for bringing this spectacular show to South Africa.

Hey guys, Thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music Magazine, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s start from the beginning, what is the story behind Munkinpure, how did this band come about? Wowzers, where to start? I guess it all started in London as a lot of our first songs were written in London during spare time while we were performing in other bands. Then we formed the band properly in Johannesburg after recording our first demo. We started gigging with the intention of moving the whole band back to the UK as we felt our sound catered to the UK market. Anyway, we moved here in late 2010 and have been gigging as a band (two South Africans and two British guys) since early 2011. Munkinpure is quite a cool name, can you tell us what it means and how did you come up with the name? Thanks. Sometimes we feel that maybe choosing a different slightly easier name would've been a better option as we have noticed that after a few drinks certain people seem to forget the name quite easily (especially if it's their first time seeing us) but weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been gigging and doing PR as Munkinpure for so long, that it would really be silly to change the name now. The story behind the name is quite long so truthfully you probably wouldn't wanna hear it, just free to interpret it anyway you like. Can you tell us a bit about each member of the band? Not much to tell really, Travis (rhythm and lead vocals) and Darryl (bass) and brothers. Travis and James Mattocks (lead guitar) met while working in a pub called the Elephant Inn in Finchley Central, UK back in 2005 and Travis and James Cross (drums) actually met at an open mic night where they were involuntary forced against each other in a drum off back in 2010. What genre of music would you classify your sound in? Alternative/Melodic/Rock.

Who is the songwriter in the band and where do you get your inspiration from? Sometimes we'll write things separately and sometimes we'll write together but Travis pretty much always writes the lyrics. Our inspiration comes in many forms and from a variety of places; it kind of depends on the day and the mood we're in and what music we're each listening to at that specific period of time. You are originally from Johannesburg South Africa, what was the reason for your move to the UK? The main idea behind Munkinpure was originally conceived while in London so after we formed its first line up (while in South Africa) our intention was to relocate back to the UK. The main reason was really the fact that we were playing a style of music that was far more Indie/British influenced than what was going on in SA at the time. So we really didn't feel like we quite fitted anywhere at that point. Plus we want to do this band as a career and be as big as we can possibly be. SA will always be home (at least to Darryl and Travis) and we love it there but in terms of trying to be on a level that we want this band to be we needed to do what we thought would be right for us. Plus, it seemed like a good idea at the time ha ha. How is the music scene in UK compared to S.A? It's a bigger scene and the competition is far greater than what it was in South Africa as every second person you meet is in a band that's trying to make it, so it's pretty tough, but there are a lot of venues to play and more often than not people do go out and support live music. Especially if the music is good. We love it here and we're really glad we made the move as we've performed at placed we otherwise might never had ever played at. Sure, it's tough but not much that's worth doing is ever easy. If we have never been to one of your live shows, what could we expect if we were to attend? A good live band that are tight and actually care about the music that we make. We pride ourselves on being a great live band and we really hope that this comes across. Do you have any rituals before a gig? Not really, just hanging out together and chatting with familiar faces or people who come to the shows. It's a party man, so we just enjoy every minute of it. Do you have any social media, how can people get hold of you? Model of the Month Interview – March 2014 Interview by Danni Vlademirovka Lombard Model – Cemetery Slvt Cemetery Slvt, a well-known model, DJ, and good friend to most of those that cross paths with her. Mostly active on the local Gauteng based scene, she organizes and DJ’s at Goth, Industrial and metal events. She’s been on the alternative scene for longer than most bands and models we know. Not only is she well connected locally but has her connections with overseas models, sponsors and bands. A person that can inspire you and become a role model in any person’s life. Fanbase chose her to be our first model of the month, and got in touch with her for an interview, to shed some more light onto her opinions, advice and experience as a seasoned alternative model. How did you get into alternative modelling, and how long have you been doing it? I’ve been in front of the camera for around 18 years, but professionally about 10 years. “Modeling” actually started pretty early in my life, and quite accidently. I was around the age of 14 or 15 and I was dating a photography student at the Vaal Technician who used me for most of his projects. I was always seen as “the weird chick” and because of that and the exposure (excuse the pun) of the shoots; I started being approached by a number of students who wanted to use me in their projects. Back then, nothing was digital, so getting any images of the shoot yourself, was close to impossible. Students are broke, their paper is precious. I moved to Pretoria from my small home town and until then, I had never had a professional shoot in my life. I auditioned and got hired to DJ for Zeplins on the Gothic Floor “The Gallery”, and it was then, that I really started being noticed (this time, mainly “the scary chick”). I agreed to a few shoots and started being approached more and more by various photographers, even appearing on Talk shows and Programs, so people were beginning to recognize me as an “Alternative Model”, which was strange, because it was all meant to promote my DJ-ing (and of course the photographers).

How do you define success as an alternative model? A successful model is a recognized model. I’m sure many a model in South-Africa would argue with me about this, perhaps saying it’s a bit narcissistic, but if you (and your portfolio) are not being recognized by magazines, Labels (clothing/make up/event) and sponsors, then all you are basically doing is collecting a bunch of ‘pretty’ photos you can use as your profile pic and cover photo to impress your friends. Who are your role models? When it comes to modeling, I have three role models. These three ladies are (in my opinion) 3 of the best models I have ever laid my eyes on. Their work is absolutely amazing and if I could be like anyone in the Alternative Modeling Industry, it would be these ladies: Elisanth (International) https://www.facebook.com/model.elisanth Michelle Payne (Local, now international) https://www.facebook.com/missmichellepayne Alice Vegas https://www.facebook.com/AliceVegasForever What distinguishes a good alternative model from a bad one? A good model does research on a photographer, before she agrees to a shoot: I have found that many Alternative Models agree to photo-shoots without doing any research on the photographers and as a model, I feel it’s one of the biggest mistakes you can make. You could take the most amazing studio/on location set, the best costume, make-up and hair, with the best performing model in the world…none of that matters if your photographer is inexperienced. When researching a photographer, don’t just concentrate on his/her portfolio, but speak to other models who they have worked with, about their experience and the photographer’s work ethics. Choose only the best, and your results will be the best.

A good model can visualize and execute the photographer’s/company’s vision of the concept of the project: You need attitude and confidence. In any type of modeling (not just alternative), your job is to become a character to fulfill the vision of the client’s concept (whether the client be the photographer, a clothing label, a sponsor)… and guess what? Posing is not enough. Getting into character and being able to use your props properly is of utmost importance. You have to be that character. There is no point in a pose, if there is no confidence and attitude behind it. A good model knows the importance of prepping the night before: There’s nothing worse than a model who turns up at an elegant Victorian shoot, with chipped nails and cutex, 2cm hair regrowth, bushy eyebrows and forgot half her stuff at home in the mad rush she left in, because of oversleeping. No matter what the conceptual nature of the shoot, a good model knows how important it is to properly prep the night before any shoot. This means manicuring your nails and painting (or not painting them), coloring your hair or brushing out your wigs, (depending on whether or not a wardrobe is provided) make sure the clothing you will be wearing fits and suits the concept, pluck your eyebrows, shave, pack all the necessary props, hair products, tongs, make up, clothing and accessories. Preparing and being prepared shows professionalism and leaves no room for error. A good model arrives at a shoot, fresh and on time: As much as anyone who does not model professionally would like to argue, modeling is a job. Prepping alone can take up to 7 hours of your time, let alone waking up at the crack of dawn to be at a shoot in a different city, sometimes in the most brutal conditions, working up to an additional 10 hours with the photographer. Turning up late, hung-over, tired with red eyes and unprepped shows a great; lack of respect for the photographer/company, your performance and reputation is negatively affected and more often than not, the shoot is unsuccessful.

A good model can do her own hair and make-up: There are a ton of very talented MUA’s (Make Up Artists) out there who are usually arranged by the photographer to do the make up for the models (and there are even a number of very talented photographers who do the make-up themselves), but unfortunately there are a ton who are not so talented. In cases where you find that your MUA is just not mailing it, you need to be able to take over and get your make up done, yourself. I personally prefer to do my own make up, unless the concept requires Special FX make up, or of a couture nature. In such cases, I still apply my make up to the point where the MUA needs to take over if you are not satisfied with your make up, you have the right to speak up, or take over. A good model does not grab every single opportunity presented: I’ve seen so many models make the same mistake by booking shoots for themselves every weekend, with every photographer they can possibly find. This might be a bit harsh, but that doesn’t show popularity, it shows desperation. Being selective this way may cause you to be accused of snobbery, but it also shows you have high standards, which will attract the right projects. It’s much better to have fewer shoots of amazing quality, than hundreds that are “average”. A good model has variety: Each model has different styles of approaching a shoot when it comes to posing and facial expressions and this also depends on the photographer’s equipment and style of shooting. Some require freeze posing and other require movement. Nevertheless, having a variety of poses and movement is extremely necessary to produce great work. In my modeling career, at shoots I have climbed things, crawled under things, sat in mud with expensive clothing, floated in icy rivers with gross shit under my feet, had an audience staring, had photographers injure themselves, been covered in blood, the list goes on… When modeling, you've got to do what it takes to get *that shot*. Too many photo-shoots have been ruined by the model having the same facial expression, with the same pose in all of their shots. Many models don’t understand that your poses need to suit the concept, clothing, hair, as do your facial expressions. Be aware of your body position, and your facial expression at all times

A good model is a model with a reason: Too many models treat modeling as a glamorous hobby, instead of a profitable business. You have to ask yourself if you are modeling for the right reasons. Once you have your images and you have your portfolio, what do you plan to do with it? Everyone starts off small, but to get anywhere, you need to work hard. Networking and building relationships with people in the fashion industry (mainstream or alternative) is really important for promoting yourself properly. Yes, at first, you will be approaching a lot of people first, but approaching the right people will open a world of great opportunities for exposure, and before you know it, you’re being approached by magazines, album shoots, video shoots, television interviews and articles. Work hard and you’ll get it. A Bad Model …is the opposite. Any other projects you are currently involved in? With regards to modeling, I have a few pending shoots that I intend on getting to the moment I can get some free time on my hands. I was also recently approached by a talent agency to audition for the casting of the new and upcoming “Guinness” milk stout commercial which will be broadcast internationally. The audition went extremely well and I am currently waiting for the results. Your views and opinions of the local alternative modeling industry? Ooooh, this is such a dangerous question, but I am going to answer this as honest as is perhaps necessary. I honestly feel that the local Alternative Modeling Industry is a bit of a disaster, especially in Gauteng. Lately, girls call themselves “Alternative Models” simply because they look a bit weird and appeared in a shoot. It takes much more than that. Too many shoots I have seen with poor make up, hair, styling, facial expressions (or the lack of), poses and overall execution and it makes South Africa’s Alternative Modeling industry look unprofessional and a bit of a “pose”.

Having said that, there are a handful of really exceptional Alternative models with world class standard, especially in Cape Town for some reason. The Alternative models in Cape Town are doing an absolutely amazing job, with the exception of 3 or 4 Gauteng models.

The South African Alternative Modelling lacks creativity, originality, attitude and professional models, for the most part.

I don’t exclude myself from this. Even some of my work lacks at times, but the first step to fixing a problem is recognizing and admitting there is one.

Who has the greatest influence in your life? Unfortunately, I can’t offer you an “Alternative Model” as my answer, but I can tell you who had a huge impact on my life, that I can truly say I looked up to for many, many years. As you know, Cemetery Slvt is not just an Alternative model, but a “Label” that holds a strong reputation for entertainment within the South African scene, even being nominated in 2013 by Vampire Freaks.com as the head of South African Goths/Industrial events entertainment and hosting, and not to mention a good 11 years of DJ-ing under the belt, followed by hundreds of Goths and Rivetheads (Industrial peeps), locally as well as internationally. Various DJ’s of almost every single Gothic club/venue/event I ever attended have had the greatest influence in my life. Their sense of style and dress, their attitude, the presence they carried with them, the amazing musical knowledge and entertainment they possess able to create memories of night that people will not only forever cherish and speak of…but also, never forget. They’ve been my greatest influence!

In the mainstream fashion industry, modelling and photography has come under attack for being unrealistic and the extensive use of Photoshop and similar retouching tools. Digital re-touching plays a part in alternative modelling and Goth fashion photography too. Do you think re-touching is bad? That really depends on the situation. No one is perfect and life happens, and life usually happens when a shoot is around the corner. You fall and scrape yourself, you get pimple attack, you get a bruise, you have an embarrassing mark on your body…we are only human when doing a shoot, things have to be perfect.

In my opinion, retouching is absolutely acceptable as long as the model is recognizable and still looks the same. Retouching should be used to enhance, not change features. Once it starts changing features, I tend to have a problem with it.

The same applies with photo editing. Over editing can make a shoot, or break a shoot.

Do you think alternative modelling is under-appreciated and underrepresented? Alternative modelling can be and is very appreciated and represented if the product you are presenting deserves to be.

Any interesting/unusual experiences you’ve had so far in the course of your modelling work? The only interesting/unusual experience I’ve had was when I appeared on Channel MK, for the program “AF” which is kind of like a South African “Jack Ass”.

I was approached to appear in “AF” in 2005, who heard I was a dominatrix (back then, going by the name of “Mistress Raven”). They basically wanted me to come onto their show and whip the shit out of the cast members. One guy from the cast in specific walked into Zeplins (shooting location) with what seemed to be invisible watermelons under his arms, and one between his thighs. It was one of the most arrogant guys I have ever encountered, and he was very comfortable making negative comments about me, who at the time was dressed in complete PVC, 10” heels, choker and a leather whip dangling from my hand. It was well into show time, and finally it was this guy’s turn to be whipped by me. What was interesting to see was, when I was done with him, the only thing he had between his legs, was his shaking tail. Never under estimate the power of a girl in high heels…especially when she carries a whip.

What Instruments do you play, and which one is your favorite? I play rhythm guitar, dabble a bit with slide guitar (self-taught and still learning), and vocals. I fiddle about on djembe and conga's/bonga's as much as I can, and try play a bit of keyboards. My favourite instrument is the guitar. What bands have you played in? Which Projects are you presently involved in? I had a band whilst still at school, but went solo after the army. I started a band with Paul Basel when I was living in Ballito, called Uncle Fester, but we never really pursued that one, due to both of our solo gig commitments.

Good Day Byron Love...welcome to Fanbase Music Magazine, thank you for wanting to be part of next month issue, first of all is your name Byron Love or Love Byron, witch one would you like to be called? Thank you for the interview letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s get started straight away! I'm known as Byron Love (lovebyron is only my email handle, as Byron Love was already taken on Yahoo mail, believe it or not) Tell us a bit about youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re genre of music and where you would class yourself? I generally class myself in the acoustic rock/folk genre, but also do blues and reggae. What is your age? I turned 53 on Monday 24th February 2014. Has it been hard to become the musician you are today, and what sacrifices did you have to make to get where you are today? Becoming the musician I am today has taken a whole lot of self-instruction (I did 3 guitar lessons with a teacher before deciding to rather teach myself - funny, because these days I am also a guitar teacher). The usual giving up family time, not having an income in between gigs, going without and being away from home are the main sacrifices that come to mind. I have also made it my mission to support and learn from my musician friends, and attend there gigs whenever I'm not gigging. I've also spent a lot of time with other muso's who have all helped me along the way, and I offer help to other muso's starting out, or wanting to join the whole musical journey.

These days, I usually collaborate with other musicians as required at gigs, and in the studio, where I go under the band name of "The Byron Love Consortium" ( We released our first CD last year in September, called "Free Rebel" and we are currently in the studio (Blackfox Productions in Pietermaritzburg, owned by Jason Fox from Firetree) at present laying down tracks for our 2nd album to be called "Not What We Are", where we are experimenting with "Atmospheric Acoustic" type songs. I recently posted the first track from the 2nd album, "Why Oh Why" on face book and reverbnation.com. Do you do covers or originals? (Band or Solo) I am usually a solo artist that plays covers (with or without backtracks), and do my own compositions as well. I have played in a few bands, but prefer to rather collaborate under The Byron Love Consortium name, as this allows a lot more variety. Do you enjoy playing cover songs more than your own stuff? I love playing acoustic songs (Eddie Vedder, Matchbox 20, Adam Gontier, Peter Tosh, Rolling Stones, actually, a wide variety, too many to list here). I love the blues and reggae, and what I call Swamp Rock, southern style rock. I have composed a good few of my own songs which I also like to do acoustically. I prefer to play my own compositions, but also like doing worthy covers, i.e. Adam Gontier/Eddie Vedder and the like (acoustically). I just love jamming, being onstage, and singing my heart out, it makes life worth living.

Gangs of Ballet at the Durban Botanical Gardens gig review Gangs of Ballet were putting on a show with the original symphonic arrangements by DCO Musical Director Russell Scott, this collaboration between the 50 strong DCO and astounding rock outfit Gangs of Ballet promised to be something that will challenge ideas of what orchestra's and rock bands can sound like! The gates haven’t even opened and I am walking to queue, thanks to our fabulous sponsors Total Exposure we had an extra ticket to give to one lucky member. I spot him in the queue and call him closer, and gave the young gent his ticket. The gates open, and the ants are off. Have you ever been in a race where the competition is fierce, well this is how I felt and looked when leaving the ticket gates, you grab your gear and start fast walking your way down to the gardens where you have to find the best spot under the beautiful summer sky on Valentine’s Day 2014. Here we rest after our fast race walk and observe the stage to find what we all have been waiting for. Gangs of Ballet and the Durban orchestra take the stage and we hear our favorite song and YouTube favorite video of “Don’t let me go”. I truly find the orchestra in the back ground a soothing sound and just made the night all worth it. The romantic feeling is surely what we felt in our hearts. Gangs of Ballet easily wow us with new songs and amazed how the whole band enjoyed themselves on stage, even our brother Josh Klynsmith played one of his own songs. As we were listening to the music performed by great musicians, I watch the night sky light up with 1000 glow bangles that where given to the first 1000 members. To top it there were a whopping 5000 people in the Botanical Gardens, so you can just imagine how this night played out under the stars. As we were listening to a song, a man with a big red heart sign with the name Tam Ballard written on it takes to the stage. He announces that he has a question to ask and with that he turned the heart around and in big letters the words “marry me” written on the back, and guess what, she said YES. Congrats to the lovely couple on their engagement and thumbs up to our man for doing it at the best venue ever. Truly made one woman’s heart melt and some men hide in shame. Garth Powell and Tam Ballard! This was an evening to remember. Thank you once again to Total Exposure and Old Mutual and last but not least to our beautiful Botanical Gardens for always looking on top form, and all the staff that keep it in tip top shape. Black Hole sun was one of my faves off the album as is so many other good hits, well good news for all Sound garden fans as the album goes into its 20 year anniversary Fans will get a chance to dig a little deeper into that classic release for its 20th anniversary. That’s because Soundgarden are preparing a massive 20th Anniversary reissue that will arrive on June 3 through A&M Records/UME. The disc, which technically turns 20 on March 8, featured such standout tracks as ‘Spoonman,’ ‘Black Hole Sun’ and ‘Fell on Black Days,’ while songs such as ‘The Day I Tried to Live’ and ‘My Wave’ have also earned their spots as fan favorites over the years. The special 20th anniversary reissue of ‘Superunknown’ will arrive in two deluxe versions. The “Deluxe Edition” is a two-disc package featuring the original remastered album along with a collection of demos, rehearsals, b-sides and more. The “Super Deluxe Edition” version includes the two deluxe edition discs, plus additional demos, rehearsals and b-sides on two other discs and a fifth disc with the album mixes in Blu-Ray Audio 5.1 Surround Sound. On Saturday, 22 February 2014 a friend and I decided to head out to watch Mean Black Mamba at one of the most picturesque outdoor venues in the Scarborough area, namely the Cape Farmhouse. Not only is it a visual delight but the Farmhouse features music events every Saturday. Sheltered under the oaks on this 250-year- old- farmhouse, there is fresh air, endless space and great food. Music has the ability to take you on a journey to a place, it can awaken a dream in your soul, feelings of happiness, even sadness and deep reflection are evoked, as the words of the story/stories unfold. The music can make your mind come alive and your heart beat faster. Letting my eyes rest on the little children running around in circles pretending to fly, any doubts I had were extinguished by the simplicity of a child’s heart to feel. As Guy and James did what they do best, people everywhere gathered on the dance floor and swayed to the sounds that Mean Black Mamba are renowned for. To quote:

His drumming had the ability to make you come alive both in body and spirit. What always touches my heart is to see families enjoying music together. Where do you see yourself in five years, in terms of your photography? My Dream is to open a more professional studio, I currently don’t use any studio lights (only available light) but would love to have a fully equipment studio.

Who is your favourite photographer and why? Stephen Segal, I admire his work and would give anything to have his knowledge in photography, his tips and tricks, when I saw him with Nikon Camera training , i thought to myself “I want to be like him when I grow up” his work sometimes leaves me speechless!

What advice do you have for upcoming photographers? Remember, the way you see some image is not the same as someone else, every photographer do their own style and are unique in many different ways, do it your way and cause you love it , do lot of experiments , try something out if you don’t know how, you will never know what your ability in photography is if you don’t try new things
