sore as this issue sees the last time that the Full Metal Panic team will be writing for Fanbase Music magazine. The metal team is going to be starting a new metal magazine called Heavy Metal panic. We wish them well and would like to thank them for their commitment to Fanbase Music magazine in the past year and a half. I am going to miss them and although this is farewell, this isn’t good bye. Before sending them off on their new adventure lets tell you what you can expect in the last edition of Full Metal Panic. Well with Ramfest well over, I think it’s safe to say that event was so awesome that some of us are still recovering from it. The Full Metal team were lucky enough to be there and cover it, and you can expect a very cool gig review done by the boys. 40 day Journey is our front cover band this month, believe it or not this band is made up of 3 members from the band Carolina Bridal Party, it’s a big change to the blues/rock that we used as the boys go heavy and hard but I am happy to be featuring them, you can find that interview in the Full Metal Panic section. As always our Durban team has been very busy working on this issue, they have some awesome reviews and articles so go check it all out. I interview Stormy Monday, Donovan Fourie and Gareth James. All very good musicians who are taking the South African industry by storm. I am very happy to be featuring Lady Spitfire, Presenter and owner of us radio station called The Indie Authority. TEAM
PROFILE
Hi guys thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music Magazine, can you tell us how did it start for the band? It started out with my good friend and fellow Fender fanatic Johan and I (Dave) having a guitar jam at his house. We realized instantly that we connected musically and needed to pursue the music. We held auditions for a drummer and soon got hold of Gustav. Finally I got wind of a great keys player capable of playing just about anything and so the quartet was born! We all have the common thread of our shared passion for blues music. What genre of music would you classify your band in? Blues Rock sums it up nicely. There are very strong blues influences from Texas to Chicago style blues in Stormy Monday. Can you tell us a bit about each member of the band? Dave (guitars and vocals) – Captain and helmsman at the wheel. Tone connoisseur! Been playing guitar since like forever. Idolizes Jimi Hendrix. Fender Strat collector. Johan (bass guitar) – Ruler of the bottom end. Deep in the pocket! The human metronome. Whiskey connoisseur. Gustav (drums) – Reigning from the throne. The groove master! The bearded one. Subtlety is his specialty. Selfconfessed book worm and scholar. Jacques (keys) – King of ebony and ivory. Talented improviser and possessor of a great ear! Happens to have a PhD.
“You could expect to hear soulful music, sweet hooks and blue notes”
Interview by: Duwyne Clayton
Who is the song writer in the band and where do they get their inspiration from? We all contribute to the song writing process in the band. It may start with someone coming up with a bass line, a melody or a chord progression and everyone else will build on that and add their own creativity to the song. We will then jam the song endlessly in order to add colors, sounds and textures to it until we’ve molded it into what we all feel should be the end product. We draw from the well of inspiration that is the old and contemporary blues cats who paved the way for this beautiful music. Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Doyle Bramhall II and John Mayer come to mind first. If we have never been to one of your gigs, what could we expect if we were to attend? You could expect to hear soulful music, sweet hooks and blue notes. Expect a tight group of musicians and loads of entertainment. We still play interpretations of old and new blues standards to pay our dues to the founders and spread the gospel of the proud blues tradition and repertoire.
Do you have any rituals before a gig? I think most of us listen to one of our influences as a primer before the show! Can you name some of your achievements? Apart from a steadily growing fanbase we are proud to have performed in most of the top venues and share the stage with some really awesome bands. Playing the Durban International Blues Festival in 2013 with top SA blues acts was a definite highlight. How can people get hold of you, do you have any social medias? We are pretty active on Facebook and Twitter. We post all our gigs on there. Just look up Stormy Monday!
Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last messages for your fans or our readers? The pleasure is ours! The blues is an international language that everybody can understand. Everybody can ‘get’ the blues. Someone once famously said “The blues chase the blues away” so come see us live for a rockin’ good time!

Hey there thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music Magazine, let’s start from the beginning where did it all start as a band, what is the story about “Them Bandits”?
Who are some of the bands influences?
Wayne: Started from the bottom now we here! ( ha ha)
R: Monster Truck!
Tyrone: Wayne contacted me one day saying we should do a side project to a band we were in at the time. He wanted to do something gritty and dirty. Old school Rock n’ Roll. I was amped on that. Kevin: I shortly got a phone call; they approached me with two songs and asked me to be John Paul Jones! From that we wanted to create songs that would stand the test of time! Not this disposable music found on radio these days. Alex: Tyrone and me where pals for a while since we where kids, jamming together at school. It was inevitable that he was going to give me a call to join the band when the space opened up. When I tried out for the band it seemed like a natural fit. Ross: I came in when I heard Them Bandits was looking out for a vocalist and jumped at the opportunity. What genre of music would you classify your music in? K:
Dirty fat rock n’ roll!
K: Foo Fighters and Black Country Communion!
W: Biffy clyro and Queens of the Stone Age for me . . . and Dave Grohl! And Them Crooked Vultures! R: Lots. A: Sound Garden. R: Nice! A: Weather Report! Especially Jaco Pastorius! K: You can’t steal one of my bassists! T:
Who is the song writer in the band and where do you get your influences from? T: Me! See the last question. K: Everyone writes songs. Ideas. Brings it to the band room. Then Tyrone tabs it out. T:
Can you tell us something about each member of the band? A: Kev’s the father figure in the band. He keeps us out of trouble. T: Ross likes to Soldier On! 0/ K: If Ty goes missing, he can be found at the nearest pub. W: We imported Alex from Serbia. R: Wayne is a living metronome, and he’s a pretty cool guy.
Led Zeppelin, Toto, Deep Purple. Anything my pa had on the tele. First Watch Whiskey!
I leave guitars around the house so they are easily accessible, and when the song strikes, I have that guitar right there to get the song idea down.
Them Bandits is a cool band name, how did it come about and what is the meaning behind it? W: There were angels. Grohl came down. There was a choir. They sang, “Them Bandits”.
The Band has released their full length debut album “Black Town”, can you tell us more about that album, how many songs are on the album and how can people get hold of it? K: During the song writing process we were working towards a Spaghetti Western theme to outline the dirty Rock n’ Roll. W: There are Eleven tracks. There might be a hidden one. K: Fans can grab it from most social media and music distribution sites. Soundcloud, CDBaby and iTunes. Ect. You can also grab a physical copy from us directly at one of our shows.
Can you name some of the bands achievements so far? K: Most recently would be playing the mainstage at Ramfest 2014. W: Playing awesome shows with Fuzigish! R: Soldiering On Pals! 0/ If we haven’t been to one of your gigs before, what could we expect if we were to attend? K: Loud Music and brewskis! A: You may gain a few kilograms! Its that fat!
Do you still get nervous when you on stage? T: Not often, but playing stages like Ramfest is always nerve wrecking! R: Raz says nah! A: The pals Soldier On! 0/ Do you have any new albums/EP’s or recordings out? W: Yes. Just came out in March. It’s called “Soldier On!” - you can go check it out on our Social Media. Looking at your facebook page, I see you seem to support the fight for Rhinos a lot, can you please tell us how much that issue means to the band and how it is the band is helping this great cause? K. We have played kickass fundraisers to support the cause, and we believe that music can make a difference and can be used as a great tool to bring about change.
How can people get hold of you, what are your social medias? R. Check us out on ~Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud, and `reverbnation. K. People can contact me for any information or bookings @ thembanditsband@gmail.com Thank you for doing this interview with us, do you have any last messages for your fans or our readers? Band - SOLDIER ON! W. thanks for all the support thus far, hope to see you at a show soon!

Gareth James
Gareth James is a musician I am very excited in featuring in Fanbase Music Magazine, I first heard of Gareth on Zone Radio and I liked him right away. Playing a music genre that is not easy to break into, this country/rock singer is one of the hardest working musicians I know. So next time you listening to Zone Radio and feel like requesting an awesome song, then consider requesting Gareth James, you won’t be disappointed. Enjoy the interview.’ Thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music magazine, let’s get started, how did you become a musician?’ 16 years ago I watched my first live show and was hooked ever since. At first I thought I was doing it to be cool with the cool kids but as it turned out I fell love with music and couldn't get enough of it. Did you come from a musical background? Yes you can say that, my great Grandfather was a song writer as well as and most of family were choir singers. In your own words, how would you describe the genre of music you play? A lot of people would call it Country/Rock but I like to see it as Modern Country. Either way is cool though hahahahaha… Can you tell us a bit about your song writing, what do you normally write about? I love writing relatable story songs about love, life and every day experiences. I have one or two drinking songs hahahahaha... I enjoy writing party songs too which is something new I've been trying out and it seems to be working hahahaha... I hope.
What is the process like of your song writing and do you write the lyrics or music first? The process varies, sometimes when I'm at a show and we supposed to be playing a song I find myself writing chord progressions that sound great to me and then my good friends and fellow musicians, Donovan Chemaly (guitars and banjo) and Jeanre' Leo (Drums, Percussion and Backing Vocals) would make me record it before I forget it. Then the next day I'll sit and attempt a new song. If the song is not too good I catalogue it and go back later and see how we can make it better. As far as which order I write in... mmm. .. sometimes I like to loop a drum sample and put some guitar stuff it and then I’ll write my story according to the mood of the instrumentation. Other times I play guitar and write a story that way. I hope that answers your question right hahahaha... If we have never been to one of your gigs, what could we expect if we were to see you perform? I've always had pride in the fact that I'm an entertainer by heart and soul. Since I started music and performing I've always wanted people to leave a show and say they got their money's worth and say "WOW!!! What a show". I love making people feel emotions when they follow my stories. I hope when the day comes to hang up my mike that I can feel like my shows have touched people. So come down to a show soon and Co. E say hi. I once saw on facebook that you ran a competition that a lucky winner could win a free performance right in the comfort of their own home, I think that was an awesome idea, how did that idea come about? Funny you should mention that. The competition is still running the end of April. My wife handles my PR etc etc and she came up with the idea. It's actually quite popular in USA. To know more about the competition please check out www.facebook.com/garethjamesmusic
I first heard your music on Zone Radio, just how important is radio stations like Zone Radio for your career, compared to the commercial radio stations out there? I believe that all radio stations of high importance to getting your songs heard and getting name known. Although I have to say that Zone Radio have been so kind to me and are continuously supporting local and I think it's just awesome. I've found many times that commercial radio would turn me
down in the past cause my music is too Country for SA Radio but in the same breath I must add that in 2013 I had some great doors open for me through having radio play in Commercial radio as well as Community radio, so both are very important.
Do you have an album out, and where can people find all your recordings? I had copies of my 1st album at my shows but they are sold out FOR NOW. We are currently working on doing an international online distribution so look out for that. What are your social medias, how can people get hold of you? Www.facebook.com/garethjamesmusic www.soundcloud.com/garethjamesmusic www.youtube.com/garethjamesonline Twitter:@IamGarethJames Instagram: @gazaluz Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last words for your fans and our readers? Thank you so much for taking the time to read and to Fanbase Music Magazine for taking the time to talk to me. Just some extra news to share... I recently signed a deal with Dennis East of SHIAM Music Label. We are in studio working on my new album and the first single will be ready for release by the end of April. Hold thumbs
UB40 South A
African Tour
As the day reached closer, my enthusiasm and excitement grew more, to be honest I have always been a UB40 fan and I like a number of their hits, I remember my good old Uncle Frikkie would listen to their songs back in the day and I think that is my earliest memory of listening to UB40. Songs like “Red Red wine”, “I can’t help falling in love with you” ‘and “Kingston Town” were all songs I was hoping to hear. Despite the controversy of three old original band members performing under the UB40 name and other band members playing under the same name and thus why it was dubbed UB40 featuring Ali Campbell, I wondered if that would put a damper on the day. In my mind Ali Campbell is and will always be the voice of UB40 which made this show even more exciting to watch. And to my happiness it didn’t stop to make the show anything less than perfect and what you would expect from UB40 music. Right, with controversy out the way and for the lawyers to sort out, the stage was set at the awesome Emmarentia venue. I made my way to the media tent situated at the left of the stage. Whenever Mike Pocock and his team from Seed Experiences is involved in a show, they always look after the media providing us with a bottle of water and Wi-Fi etc, I take a bottle of water and make my way to find a good spot in front of the stage. But not before I go and search for some food, I am faced with the situation of variety venders to choose from, from anything to burgers, to swarmer’s to hotdogs to more Indian type food likes Samosas, I decide on the foot long hotdogs and proceed to make my order. With food and drink in place I find a quiet spot to eat, I can hear the first act of the day started so I try to eat a bit faster than usual so I don’t miss too much of Michael Lowman and proceed to fight my way through the crowd (which by now have already packed the field area), I get a nice spot meters away from the stage and proceed to listen to the awesome sounds of Michael Lowman. I actually thought I didn’t know this awesome talented musician, but as his set goes on I realise I have actually heard his music before, that is a nice feeling when you actually like a song you have heard before and then realise the guy on stage made that song. I got to make a note to myself to get to know his music better. (Maybe a possible interview soon) After his amazing set, I get ready for the awesome FreshlyGround to take to the stage, I must say, I am a huge FreshlyGround fan and seeing them live is something I have been wanting to do for a while so when I heard they would be one of the support acts for UB40, I knew it was going to be a good day. I must say I am such an emotional baby, don’t tell anyone, this is just between you and me but I actually got a lump in my throat and shed a tear or two during their set. I think it is just something about this band that makes me so happy inside that it even makes me cry. When different racial people come together and form a band, cultural difference aside apart from letting influence their music, it is such a beautiful thing. It kind of makes me proud to be South African, there are a variety of cultural influences that can be heard coming out in the band. They played all my favourite songs which included Doobie doobie doo, Buttercup, and my faves Fire is low and I’d like to, they even played the soccer world cup song waka waka (Time for Afrika) which was originally done by them with Shakira, I actually forgot that they did that song with Shakira so it was a nice surprise when they sang it.
As their set ended I felt content with the world, there is such great music coming out of South Africa and now in a few minutes time another great Legend Mango Groove will be taking to the stage, they give me the same happy emotional feeling as Freshly Ground do with the whole multi-racial members in the band. After a quick set up the band take to the stage, playing a nice little opening before lead singer Claire Johnson takes to the stage. The already loud roaring crowd roared even louder as Claire all dressed in red walks on the stage. I have so much respect for this band, they were around in the apartheid years and I think even before Nelson Mandela was president they showed the world that it’s okay for black and white to come together’. That is the cool thing about music, it allows different cultures come together and produce something that can stand the test of time. Just think about it, songs like “Special Star” have such a cool South African feel to it, and it has been going for years and is still a great hit for the band. They played Special Star and all their other favourites such Moments away and Dance some more. During the song Special star Claire Johnson did a bit of a change to the song as she hanged on a high note which must have been for at least 30 seconds, showing that she still has what it takes to perform with the rest of them. I am so happy I got to see them live and between Mango Groove and Freshly Ground, I can definitely tick them off my bucket list of bands to watch live. After such a great line up of bands we almost forgot who we here to actually see perform live, UB40 still have to take to the stage, thus making the excitement build up again as I realise the best is yet to come. After a set up that felt like forever it is finally time for the band to come on stage, I can safely say up until now the crowd was happy to be seated on the grass or the floor and enjoy the host of bands, but soon as the main act UB40 came on stage, everyone was up on their feet leaving me, with a foot ulcer and not able to stand for very long, not able to see the stage as I had to sit down for the rest of show. I try not to let that get to me as I had the big screen TV right in front of me, but luckily one of the guys in the crowd comes up to me and says “you did not come to watch the band on TV, that is what DVD’s are for” and offers me a nice high chair to sit on where I am then able to see the band on stage with ease. That’s the thing about the UB40 crowd, they are all so nice, offering me chairs or sips of their drinks, the vibe was definitely a good one. I don’t know if it was the crowd or the funny things they were smoking and drinking but it made them all a pleasant crowd to be around. All I can say is UB40 was amazing, for the age of everyone in the band I am impressed at how well they perform, singing and dancing and really putting on a good show, Ali Campbell has such a great voice and is definitely the voice behind the band. They sang a host of all their tracks including Red Red Wine, Kingston Town and I can’t help falling in love with you.
I must say this show was so awesome and I am so glad I was there to share in it. Well done to all involved with yet another great show and thanks to Mike Pocock for once again hooking me up with a press pass, great day all around.

Hi guys thank you for doing this interview, first of all lets start from the beginning, where did it all start, what is the story behind State Society? Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to be a part of this interview. Well it all started in roughly 2010 as a three piece band. Back then it was Petri (Drummer) and Cliff (Frontman) stemmed from heritage bands like Project Blackout, GodChaser, BiOT. Where we played together in the local metal scene. We began shifting our mind-set from the metal writing to playing more digestible commercial type music on this new project, we wanted to try something different. Thus the birth of State Society. In 2010 we marched off to studio to record our debut album “State Society – This Life” during mid-2011 to mid-2012. Post album recording we managed to meet Marchant including replacing our then bass player and added the two new members to the band. Roughly 100 shows in 18 months throughout 2012 while maintaining out busy normal work schedules was quite hectic for the four of us.
State Society is quite an interesting band name, how did it come about and what does it mean to the band because it seems like a cool band name? The Band name stems from the concept that we all have major trials and troubles though our daily lives, yet we as a society forget what it’s like to be real and honest with each other. We all wear these masks hiding our journey, our hurts and our fears. Thus the “State” of “Society” today. The message we portray on the first album speaks to these masks, fears and journeys thus the positive message in our through our music. What kind of genre would you classify your music in? “Positive” Commercial rock or Commercial pop rock
What is some of the bands influences? Influences - Petri and Mike it’s more the harder genres “More metal then your mamas kettle”, like Killswitch, Bullet for my Valentine and the likes. Marchant and Cliff are more the Blues, rock styles, Matt Corby, Bastille, Dave Matthews, and Foo Fighters etc. Who is the current members of the band what does each member do in the band? Clifford Barnard – Vox, Guitar (Frontman) business, booking agent and band manager Marchant Pretorius – Guitars, Brand Management, Graphic designer, booking agent Mike Pocock – Bass Guitar, Band PR and Booking agent Petri Burger - Drummer, Booking Agent
Mike Pocock is the latest member to join the band on bass, what does Mike bring to the band that is new? Mike has been in our sights for a while now as our pervious bass player had personal commitments thus leaving the band with no hard feelings. As a part of our new journey we wanted Mike for his bass playing style and the package he brought. His persona and what he could bring to the table from a “Band business” point of view too over and above that we have great respect for him. We are glad to have him on board. We as a band are excited to see what our future holds with our current line-up.
This question is for Mike, how does it feel to play for State Society, was an easy decision to take on? Yeah, I was very excited and happy when the guys welcomed me into the band. I had been looking to join a group of guys who are not only amazing musicians, but also a great bunch of genuine people. After I left my former band in Cape Town, Atlantic South, an amazing metalcore band down there, due to personal reasons, I wanted to find a bunch of guys I could click with. I cannot wait to get on stage with the guys to just rock out for any audience who watches us. Can you name some of the bands achievements? Winner of the rock & acoustic battle of the bands 2014 from pool of 60 bands Top 10 in ‘The Setup’ battle of the bands from a pool of 60 bands Performed live in 5FM studio on the Catherine Grenfell on Live@5 Our music has been selected to be the music score in a film called “The Initiate” launching fall 2014. Play isted on national and regional rock radio stations across South Africa. Performed at venues across the country alongside the likes of Jack Parow, Evolver One, Van Coke Kartel, Chromium to name a few. Multiple tours during 2011 to 2013 Recoded and released our Debut album ‘This Life’ in 2013 If we have never been to any of your gigs before, what could we expect if were to see you play? We are dynamic explosive band on stage, yet to introducing intimate moments during our show. We try keeping our shows energetic yet captivating for those that come see us. We try to deliver a professional show of the highest standards to our fans and yet try to connect with them as that is quite important to us.
Do you guys get nervous before a gig? We don’t really get nervous before gigs, as we have quite a lengthy history of shows in the last few years. We are solely focused on what we are trying to achieve on that night in terms of intimacy and performance. However we have not yet played live with Mike and I’m sure we are all there to help old Mike out if he is on the nervous front. Can you tell us what do you do before a gig, is there any band rituals that take place before a gig, like voice warm ups etc? Its quite funny as we are not sure about any band rituals none that we know of ”laughs”, however we know that Cliff two hours prior to a show warms up his voice with his vocal exercises and intensively for twenty minutes before the show. Petri and Marchant focus on their rig setup off stage, mental preparation and focus on the set list for that night. Mike drinks beer as we don’t know how he prepares prior to a show yet. I heard you have got a few new single coming out and as well a few music videos in the pipeline, can you tell a bit more about that? We are super excited as we have two new singles coming out one called “Dance” and the other “Beautiful Day”. “Dance” is a more upbeat less serious type song, purely just a fun song to play and sing. “Beautiful Day” yet another deep song to help us understand the appreciation of each day. We are looking at shooting four music videos, Breath of Life, Stand up from our previous album and the two new singles Beautiful Day and Dance. We are currently in various stages or concepts production and planning. Shooting the video for “Love to feel” had been so much fun we decided to give these next four concepts the best run for our money.
When can we expect the new recordings and music videos to come out? The recordings and videos will be released at various stages post June 2014. Though we are looking at releasing “Dance” at the end of April or early May. You are one of the bands confirmed for the SPCA “Rocking for the paws” Charity gig being held at Brazenhead-The library in Sandton on 10 May , are you looking forward to this gig and the cause behind it, and what can we expect from the band when they take on to the stage? We are all for supporting good causes. We previously supported local charities and good cause events as always excited to get involved. We are hard at work to bring you nothing less than an “A” rated show. Expect one rocking night with the great line up for that evening. Thank you for doing this interview, how can people get hold of you, do you have any social medias? We are on Facebook “State Society” page you are more that welcome to contact and follow us there. Starting in September 2011 with a three man line up and recently adding an additional member to become a four piece. “State Society " has done nothing but try to break the mould of today's boring repetitive commercial/ pop rock genre remaining true to the set objective of their project, “easy listening positive music”. With music influenced by bands such as Dave Mathews, Foo fighters, The Temper Trap, U2, The Narrow, Coldplay and the likes. State Society mixes commercial rock, pop rock, hard rock and a “feel good” element together seamlessly. The vocals are a mixture of choral multiples including a call to anthem in their lyrics that have a definite social conscience. This band tries their hardest to be real to everyone they come in contact with and be professional on every level, from live to studio and relationships with fellow bands, promoters, event organisers last and most importantly their fans. After playing a countless number of shows in the last year they called it their “Club Tour”, across South Africa in the middle of recording their debut album “State Society” is preparing to start a new chapter. They have just finished recording their debut full length album entitled “This Life”. They are releasing it independently as a testament to all their hard work over the last two years. After the CD's release the band is planning on continuing to play shows for anyone and everyone into the year, while also searching for a label to possibly call home. “Music Videos, TV/Radio Interviews, festivals and fan engagement, including lining up the writing process for our second album are in our sights” says Cliff the front man of the band. So be ready and gear up for “State Society” as they make a name for themselves. https://www.facebook.com/StateSociety www.reverbnation.com/statesociety twitter @statesociety1 About The Carolina Bridal Party The Carolina Bridal Party, an oldschool styled Blues band with strange origins http:// www.reverbnation.com/thecarolinabridalparty?profile_view_source=head A hunter’s moon peered out from behind the clouds, as four strangers strode down destiny’s path towards their inevitable meeting. On this night of nights our strangers were heading for a local whisky joint filled with rats, sailors, hoars and dirty glasses. The dive was packed and the smell of sweat and smoke filled your nostrils, it was the perfect place for a fight, the
bloody knuckles and broken noses of the patrons testified to that. Some nerd was playing folk guitar on the stage and soon flying bottles and bar stools hastened the end of his gig. Amongst this frenzied collection of drunks and mercenaries, a lone warrior guitarist stood tall before them. With an ebony Les Paul and a bottle of Johnnie Walker, Murray began with a lick that shut the unruly crowd up. Soon his fingertips glowed like red hot embers as the notes electrified the air. From the back corner a heavy bearded man named Shaun downed his tenth Nordic ale and leapt on the stage. With his base guitar in his hands he grooved as smooth as chocolate milk. Soon Gert stood on the stage and riffed as an equal, his fingers dancing amongst the frets like they were on cocaine. Now the joint was really packed and the whiskey was flowing like a river. The final adventurer to join the trio was Kyle, a titan of percussion; he sat behind the drums and unleashed a furious beat that sounded like he played with switchblades and hand grenades instead of sticks and hi-hats. The crowd seethed, the walls shook. The whole place was tearing at the seams and soon the building began to crumble and burn before the mighty sound of the blues. The crowd did not care they let the rafters, bricks and mortar tumble around them and danced the night away beneath the gaze of a hunters moon
About The Barcode Bandits The Barcode Bandits got together in July 2012. The band has ‘found themselves’ exceptionally quickly and are now a solid and cohesive unit. The Barcode Bandits are dedicated to breaking away from the world’s events and walking their own path. They are the bandits of the barcode system that society follows each and every day. Even though it’s a simple three- piece acoustic band, the powerful rock still oozes out of each and every song they perform. ‘Music has been the best medium for them to express their views and feelings on the universe’. You would be forgiven for thinking that this is a young band just starting up, but each member brings a lot of experience from past and present projects. They are very familiar with the Gauteng’s music venues and are rapidly increasing their fan base with every gig they perform.
About Stone Griffin A long time ago whilst the fires were burning bright A dark cloud arose which suffocated the light The light which shone upon each of our souls The light that meant to give us pure rock & roll As the glory and beauty slowly faded away The prophecy we believe was the only way That one day there would come a new kind Same at the heart but different in mind The order of the gods unlocked his mighty tomb To come save us all from destruction and doom Ripped from the cradle, freed from the stone Destined to reign and watch from his throne To rescue his people from a world that was torn That’s when the mighty stone griffin was born About Chaz Nielsen Front man of Metal band Because of Betrayal, Chaz Nielsen is also an awesome acoustic solo performer, his confident attitude in front of crowds makes the task of being the MC for the day a very good choice, Chaz will also be doing a short acoustic performance on the day if time allows it. WE ARE ONE COLOUR FESTIVAL BRIGHTENS UP CAPE TOWN & JOBURG SOUTH AFRICA’S ORIGINAL COLOUR FESTIVAL HIT JOZI AND CAPE TOWN THIS PAST WEEKEND WITH A FAIRYTALE CARNIVAL TWIST, THE LEGENDARY FELIX DA HOUSECAT AND LOADS OF COLOUR
The celebration of colour kicked off at the Grand Parade in the Mother City on Human Rights Day this past Friday, the 21st of March. Colour-soaked revellers decorated the air with coloured powder and danced in unity to the sounds of Kanan K7 (BRA), The Skenes, Dean FUEL, James Copeland, Tommy Gun, Plagiarhythm, Floyd Lavine, Mike Play and Chicago’s legendary house DJ, Felix Da Housecat. After waiting with much anticipation, Jozi festival-goers headed to the scenic setting of Emmarentia Dam on Saturday for their turn at the colour phenomenon. The audience jumped and bounced to the electric beats from SA’s top DJ’s such as Penthouse, Michael Lesar, Matt Suttner, Mix n Blend, Maoriginal, Vinny Da Vinci and finally to top it all off, the legend himself, Felix Da Housecat. To up the ante at this year’s WE ARE ONE series, Seed Experiences promised fans a bigger, better and louder colour festival with a FAIRY TALE CARNIVAL theme - transforming the previous white dress code into a mystical expression of fantasy and Mardi Gras colour where revellers let their imaginations run wild. Beautiful masks, striking make-up and flamboyant accessories filled both venues while celebrating the explosions of coloured powder every hour on the hour. With close on 100,000 Facebook fans across both Jo’burg and Cape Town pages, the official festival hashtag #WEAREONESA was trending as the excited festival-goers tweeted their messages, party photos and colourful selfies for the world to see. Adding to the extravagant occasion, Place in the Sun Wines as the official wine sponsor, provided the colourful party-goers with a range of their Fairtrade certified wines to enjoy in a cool tasting zone. Another successful WE ARE ONE Colour Festival, proudly brought to you by Seed Experiences, has left Cape Town and Johannesburg fans soaked in colour and once again, establishing itself as the original colour festival of South Africa. Donovan Fourie is no stranger to Fanbase Music magazine and the Johannesburg scene but we have noticed he has been rather quiet of late, we tracked him down to find out what he has been up to, it turns out he has been very busy, find out all about it in this i terview with the talented musician.
Donovan, thank you for featuring in Fanbase, it’s been a while since we featured you, fo the readers who don’t know about you can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Hi Duwyne. It’s always an honor for me to feature in the Fanbase Music Magazine and sa what’s up to all the readers. For those of you that don’t know me, I am Donovan Fourie, lo Artist, front man for the Dirty Birds and also Founder/ Director at Makemore Records. lived in Johannesburg South Africa my whole life and I’ve been writing and making Music about 7½ years now. I play my guitar pretty much every day and enjoy the gift of music. What genre of music do you play?
I would say I am more of a folk artist than anything ells but I have written a lot of Punk, Grunge, rock and Roll, psycho Billy Rock, Sludge Metal, Blues and reggae Songs that you c find on the different albums that I have done throughout the years. My most enjoyable m sic to make would be Folk and Blues tunes Can you tell us a bit about your song writing, what is the process like and what do you normally find yourself writing about?
My Song Writing Possess usually starts with me grabbing the guitar and messing around with some tunes, but at the same time think of a good concept or Story from my past exp riences that could relate with the tunes I’m busy messing around with. I will then make a cal melody in my mind and start humming while adding chord progressions, melodies and licks. Eventually once I have the right tune, chorus, breakdown etc. I will start writing the ics in a way so that it fits in the vocal melody, I will then put it all together and rehearse th hell out of it and change what needs to be changed and add what needs to be added. Eve tually I will Record a pre production of the tune I’ve come up with. After the recording I si and think off all the extra spices that I would like to add to the song to make it sound goo (Drums, lead guitar, Piano, Saxophone, backing vocals etc) I Will then give my Rough recording that I made to the session Musicians that I require and work together with them find the perfect fillings for my songs and once again rehearse the hell out of the song. I write the Guitar, Bass guitar as well as the Lyrics and instruments that go beyond my capa ities of writing I will usually ask the session artists to improvise and add their own creativ After that we will then hit the studio for the final recording of the song.

If we have never seen you perform live before, what could we expect if we were to see you play live? You could probably expect a Solo or Duo sit down acoustic show where I would promote the songs from my previous recordings as well as add some of my old time favorite cover songs in the mix while being accompanied by my Session Guitarist/Pianist. I always play my heart out and do my best to create a good atmosphere, whether I perform Life or just having a jamming session in my lounge, I always enjoy playing my songs and sharing it with my fans. I would say that my main mission is just to have fun and embrace the good vibrations of the tunes You used to front Energy Related but when we last interviewed you, you said you are breaking away from the band and doing it solo, is that still the case? Yes that is still the case. I must be honest; I enjoy having the freedom to write whatever music I want, play whatever and where ever I want and also being able to collaborate together with other musicians. I’ve never been happier and more proud of my art than i am being a solo artist in my music career.
So tell us what have you been up to since we last spoke, I hear you got some new recordings and going to go back in to the studio for your next EP soon, can you tell us more about that? Since we last spoke I’ve been back in hibernation literally drowning myself in song writing while enjoying all the other awesome fruits of life. After completing the record deal with wired sound studio I ended up recording two albums, the Strings of Life 13 track album and the Fire Within 8 track album. The Fire Within album will be released end of July 2014, Yes, I am about to go back into studio to record a little 3 track EP. With This new EP I’m trying something a little bit different than my previous recordings I’ve did before. I’m looking to do a solo Piano Album featuring myself on Vocals and Bass Guitar and session musician Alon Israelsohn on Piano. We are going to record 3 Songs to see if it would hopefully be worth bringing out a full debut album with that same vibe.
When we last spoke to you, you were still promoting your album “Strings of Life album”, how has that been going? The feedback and the album sales have been going really good. The Album has been play listed on a few various Radio stations around the world. I’ve also been keeping busy with my record label learning some production skills and how to create Music videos. I’ve made two of my own music videos featuring one song from the strings of life album “She” and one song from the Fire within Album “Fallen Angels” which turned out really cool.
Other than the new EP and recordings, what does 2014 hold for you? I’m looking to get myself back on stage and do a couple of tour to go visit all my fans from further places such as Durban, Cape Town, East London, Free state and Port Elizabeth. So to all the fans that has been listening to my music... Keep a lookout, I will be in your aria soon for a jam and spread those positive vibrations i mentioned earlier in this interview. I would also like to do more of my own music videos featuring songs from the Strings of life album.
How can people get hold of you, what are your social Medias? You can get hold of me through social media networks such as Facebook, Reverbnation, soundcast, youtube, soundcloud etc My main platform where i promote my music would be www.donovanfouriemusic.weebly.com And if you would like to purchase my music you can visit the Makemore Records online shop at www.makemorerecords.co.za Thank you for doing this interview, what last messages do you have for your fans and our readers? To all my fans... I Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the love and support you guys have given me over the years. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded my songs and big thanks to those who has purchased the Strings of life album, And to all the other Readers, Keep it real and stay true to yourself. You guys are the real rockstars

MODEL : JOSSIE AYAME How did you get into modelling? When I was younger I always wanted to be a model, but when I went to one of those ridiculous "model schools" they told me I was too fat and could never be a model. So when my friend invited me along to a shoot one day, I decided to prove them wrong. Who are your role models? There are so many alternative models whose work I admire. It's difficult to choose just a few, but the two models I wish I could most be like (if I could afford it) are Starfucked (https://www.facebook.com/Starf.Model?fref=ts) and Ophelia Overdose (https://www.facebook.com/model.ophelia.overdose) Are you involved in any other projects other than modelling? I have recently started to get into acting. So far I haven't done much except a bit of extras work but I hope to get more into it. Who has the greatest influence in your life? I'm going to give the boring answer and say my friends and my boyfriend. Without their constant support and positivity, I would have nothing. They motivate and inspire me on a daily basis. What work are you most proud of? I don't have a specific shoot that I'm most proud of, but it makes me proud when I look at my work now and compare it to when I began. I've changed and improved so much. Tell us more about yourself, who are you when you are not in front of the camera? I'm actually really shy and quiet in real life. I like to spend time with my animals or close friends but also like being alone a lot. I love to play PC games, read, listen to music and think about anything and everything. I'm currently studying fashion, specialising in buying, merchandising and marketing and hope to one day open my own large scale affordable alternative fashion store in South Africa.
Do you have any advice for aspiring alternative models? Do research about the photographers before you shoot with them. There are too many terrible alternative "modelling" photos on the internet. Do you think up concepts on your own? If so who/what inspires them? Yes, most of the concepts I shoot are my own. I spend a lot of time reading and listening to music and sometimes this inspires me. Other times, I look through other models' portfolios on sites such as Model Mayhem, Purple Port or Deviant art and if an image catches my eye, I think of what I like and dislike about the image and what I think I could change to make it better as a basis for my concept. What is your attitude towards the restrictions on looks, size etc. in the industry, and do you think a more realistic view of "beauty" should be shown more? I think some of the restrictions are ridiculous, and I illustrated this in one of my most recent shoots. It forms a twisted view of what is beautiful and makes girls hate their bodies when there is nothing wrong with them. In mainstream modelling, I am considered plus sized, which is quite sad because I don't consider myself fat or even chubby really. It's time that real girls' beauty should be shown, not the unrealistic stick figures that are deemed "normal" or "beautiful" by magazines.
How does alternative modelling compare to mainstream modelling? Alternative modelling is very different in many ways, but here are a few of them: Alternative models (in South Africa) hardly ever get paid for their work. Sadly, only commercial models can get paid work easily in South Africa because we don't have alternative agencies like they do overseas. Most photographers purely do alternative shoots for fun. This does not mean that you cannot get paid as an alternative model in South Africa, but be prepared to do more free shoots than paid shoots in most cases. Alternative models don't have to look a certain way. Basically, an "alternative model" is defined by not fitting the norms of mainstream modelling, i.e. If you are too short, too curvy, have tattoos, have piercings, have dyed hair, etc, but you don't have a set rule of how you have to look so you are more free to do what you want with your body. In alternative modelling, generally the more awkward it feels, the better it looks. In alternative modelling, you can experiment with unusual and awkward poses and they usually work better than in commercial modelling. Commercial modelling has its set poses that they generally do and stick to, but with alternative modelling you can go wild.

Anti Retro Vinyls gig review Review done by Chantel Van der Walt and Tania Meyer I need to start this as a story as it has a nice tale to it. I went to our local pub in Malvern called Musketeers and upon entering we were amazed by the transformation and construction this little bar went under. Picture this, you entering a western style place, all boarding redone, even nice theme posters all over; as you will see with the photos we had taken of that night. To top it we had a visit and guest performance from our Durban/Johannesburg self-made band who also went through some transformation with new members to the band, wait for it. The Anti Retro Vinyl’s. Yes you just read right. This newly formed members of the band with the lead singer Greg Allan the only remaining band member from the original line up had some impressing to do. Opening the stage is Carmon Munro he even took the honours playing a song by The Anti Retro Vinyl’s, where they joined him on stage and took it from there. Here is a little info on our Visiting band. THE ANTI RETRO VINYLS (formerly known as The Otherwise) are a three piece band out of Durban and Joburg, South Africa. The band consists of Greg Allan (Guitar and Vocals) , Tate Sutton (Drums) and Sarel Reynolds (Bass). Drawing influences from Indie, Old School Punk, Rock ‘n Roll, Disco, Dance and Pop, the music is a blend of creative, dirty-sounding guitars and smooth, punchy bass lines over loud disco/indie/rock beats, with Greg's unique voice tying together the mix to create catchy, party -hard, rock-out dance music with attitude. This was really something different here in Malvern and we felt the Marketing Group took it to the next level by roping these guys in to give us a jam and blow our minds. Again I mention the top notch change and will gladly be a regular attendee to this New upbeat Musketeers. Just to give you a little tasters of the delicious menu they have to serve on a Wednesday at a surprisingly very low cost, and every other day of the week, everyday entertainment will be pleasing to the ear and bring a welcome smile to your face. What can I say about The Anti Retro Vinyls, with new members in the band and Greg being the only original band member I was a bit sceptic that the new line up would be able to deliver the music we have come to love from this band, and I am happy to say, they sure delivered with Tate and Sarel fitting in quite well in their role in the band. They played some old tracks that most of the Durban crowd recognised as well as some new tracks that were newly written. There is one thing I have to say that Greg Alan is a born entertainer. He was made to be a rockstar and is defiantly an important part in what was/is The Anti Retro Vinyls. Thank you to Musketeers for a fun filled night to remember and amazing change to the venue.

Winston review Winston, our favourite place to be and where you can always find good bands playing. As we entered the venue we were greeted with big smiles, and to our surprise we met up with Darkest Age and Minority for the masses. These two bands had the place rocking, with Darkest Age took to the stage and the crowd was rocking to their music. Whilst listening to Darkest Age I bumped into our other band, Minority for the Masses. Believe it or not, we haven’t actually seen them play live, besides all the YouTube links and videos, we were blessed to see them in action, and I can say hand on heart that these guys killed it with their music. When catching up with the bands back stage, Wesley from Darkest Age informed me of a gig happening on the 28th March 2014 at the Firkins where there will be more bands battling it out on stage. Minority for the Masses had a little secret to tell me, and as Jake whispers into my ear I am totally uncontrollably very excited, and am glad to announce that Minority for the Masses is on the line up for Splashy Fen 2014. We wish them all the best for this great event. Thank you to The Winston’s always friendly staff and to the great food stall who always provide us with those delicious wors rolls, we thank you for your hospitality.

QUEEN OF T
THE BALLET
Review Done by Aiden James
You mention the band Queen and I am surely interested. You mention Ballet, Its safe to interest would begot from me.
Queen at the Ballet struck me at first as a concept that would be potentially great or in perficial. But I am pleased to say that the South African Ballet under the guiding hand o impressed be beyond words.
The storyline that is centred around the late great Freddy Mercury’s love life involving lovers (Both male and Female) is an in depth artistic representation with astonishing ac

At first sitting in the great Jo’burg civil Theatre I felt the show started off a bit slow and overall feeling that it’s just not “enough”. Enough of what though? You’re not sure…. Baring in mind that the play is not about the extensively great music of the band Freddie Mercury helped become an international phenomenon, there was an expectation that the music would be the “main attraction” as I went to find my seat but yet again. Another surprising moment when you come to realize the music has been expertly reworked to be the accompaniment to the dance and not the other way around. Perfectly “jazzing it up” or simplifying it to accentuate the emotional performances. The only lingering regret is the ever constant gnawing realization that it takes two great South-African voices to pull off what Freddie Mercury had done on his own. You quickly realize you heart is broken at the loss of such a great performer. Again the Ballet makes great use of this as the performance lead to the gripped Jo’burg audience exploding into a standing ovation. Tears showed the appreciation after an amazing rendition of “Barcelona” that left the crowd feeling like they knew Freddy personally.
My recommendation: If you’re a fan of Ballet. Go and see this. If you are not a fan of Ballet. Go and see this! You will forever be grateful that for a brief moment you got to hear Freddy Mercury speak without words.
“and in other news” Police release a string of new pics of Kurt Cobains death scene, including new pictures of his body Over the past few weeks new photos have been released of Kurt Cobain‘s death scene. Seattle Detective Mike Ciesynski promised, no photos of Cobain’s body were unveiled. “What are people going to gain from seeing pictures of Kurt Cobain laying on the ground with his hair blown back, with blood coming out of his nose and trauma to his eyes from a penetrating shotgun wound?” Ciesynski asks KIRO 7. “How’s that going to benefit anybody?” None of the 16 total pictures released have featured shots of Cobain’s body, until now. Two photos have been unveiled. On March 20, a photo was unveiled by Seattle Police depicting the Nirvana frontman’s heroin kit at the scene of his apparent suicide. The next week, on March 28, nine new pictures were revealed, showing other areas of the scene along with artefacts such as Cobain’s wallet and suicide note. Six additional photos saw the light of day on March 29, which featured various shots of investigators at Kurt Cobain’s home. These two new photographs may not show the Nirvana frontman’s face, but Seattle police are getting extremely close. One picture portrays Cobain’s left foot next to a box of shotgun shells in a paper bag, while the other shows the frontman’s lifeless arm and left side. A medical tag can be seen on Kurt’s left arm, while the musician’s famous tattoo of the K Records logo is also in clear view. This month marks the 20 year death Anniversary. Although the pics of Kurt’s body isn’t graphic, Fanbase Music Magazine still feels out of respect not to show the pics in this article. RIP Kurt!!!
FILED LAWSUIT AGAINST SEATTLE POLICE As mentioned in our previous article, Seattle police have been revealing never-before-seen photos of the Nirvana frontman’s death scene. A total of 18 pictures have been released to-date, the most recent of which showcase parts of Cobain’s actual body. In a strange twist, Seattle police are now being hit with a lawsuit by self-described investigative journalist Richard Lee. Richard Lee, 50, is widely seen as a conspiracy theorist that has made “groundless” assertions that Kurt Cobain’s death was not caused by suicide. Lee has run for Mayor of Seattle several times and once hosted the public access television show ‘Kurt Cobain Was Murdered.’ According to Seattle PI, Lee is suing Seattle police for not releasing the Cobain death scene photos shortly after the Nirvana frontman’s actual death. Lee will be representing himself in the suit. Interestingly enough, there may be a legitimate basis for Lee’s lawsuit. In Washington state, law requires that government agencies that fail to disclose releasable records pay between $5 to $100 per day, per document, for the delay. Add that up over 20 years… that’s a hell of a lot of money. The city of Seattle has yet to respond to Lee’s suit and has reportedly refused to provide Lee with copies of the already-released photos of Cobain’s death scene. “Lee has dealt with these SPD units many times in the past, and says that they are characteristically uncooperative, dilatory, and non-compliant with his requests for records and information,” Lee says in the lawsuit. Although the Seattle police “reviewed” the Cobain suicide case recently, the case is currently not being reinvestigated.
Duff Mckagan rejoins Guns n Roses I never thought I would see the day that Duff Mckagan would play along side Axl again. I thought Kings of Chaos would be the closest I would ever see Original Guns N Roses members perform together, and yes Axl doesn’t perform in Kings of Chaos but you got to admit it is cool to see Slash, Duff and Matt doing Guns n Roses songs. In recent events bassist Duff McKagan is filling in for the band’s regular bassist Tommy Stinson while he fulfills touring obligations with his other group, The Replacements. McKagan played the first of five nights on the South American tour on April 6 in Buenos Aires and by the looks of things it was one hell of a show. The band opened their set with the title track from the ‘Chinese Democracy’ album before venturing into McKagan’s familiar territory with ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ and ‘It’s So Easy.’ Early on in the set, the bassist got a chance to shine by taking lead vocals on back-to-back covers of Misfits‘ ‘Attitude’ and The Stooges‘ ‘Raw Power.’ Other highlights in the set included the Richard Fortus guitar solo which led into ‘Live and Let Die,’ Dizzy Reed’s piano solo on ‘Catcher in the Rye,’ DJ Ashba getting a turn in the spotlight for ‘La Bella Vita / Sweet Child O’ Mine’ and the Bumblefoot-led ’Abnormal.’ The evening also included a jam-heavy encore that featured the songs ‘Patience,’ ‘a cover of The Who‘s The Seeker’ and ‘Paradise City.’ McKagan will continue with Guns N’ Roses through April 17. Remaining stops on the trek include Asuncion, Paraguay; La Paz, Bolivia; Recife, Brazil; and Fortalez, Brazil. Stinson, who actually performed with Guns N’ Roses for a few South American shows before exiting the trek, will return to the band on May 13 in Bethlehem, Pa. Though he’s made prior cameo appearances, the Buenos Aires show marks McKagan’s first full performance with the band in 17 years. Now if only Slash and Matt Sorum Can rejoin the band then my life will be complete. Guns N’ Roses Buenos Aires 2014 Set List: 1. ‘Chinese Democracy’ 2. ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ 3. ‘It’s So Easy’ 4. ‘Mr. Brownstone’ 5. ‘Estranged’ 6. ‘Rocket Queen’ 7. ‘Nice Boys’ (Rose Tattoo cover) 8. ‘Attitude’ (Misfits cover) 9. ‘Raw Power’ (The Stooges’ 10. ‘My Michelle’ 11. ‘Better’ 12. Richard Fortus guitar solo / ‘Live and Let Die’ (Wings cover) 13. ‘This I Love’ 14. Dizzy Reed keyboard solo / ‘Catcher in the Rye’ 15. ‘You Could Be Mine’
16. DJ Ashba ‘La Bella Vita’ guitar solo / ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine’ 17. ‘Babe I’m Gonna Leave You’ (Led Zeppelin cover) 18. ‘November Rain’ 19. ‘Abnormal’ (Bumblefoot cover) 20. CAPE TOWN FOLK FESTIVAL AT KIRSTENBOSCH GARDENS review and photos by:
Rene Maritz
I had the absolute pleasure to attend yet another Cape Town Folk Festival held on Sunday and this time it was held at Kirstenbosch Gardens, which is such a perfect setting for a night of music. The Cape Town Folk ‘n Acoustic Music Festival bring to the stage the best of South Africa’s folk and acoustic talent in a unique concert setting. Michael Lowman kicked off the Festival with a bang. Here was a voice that immediately warmed the heart and I could picture a cold winter’s night next to a fire, sipping on a lovely bottle of red listening to his CD. Michael has a style that is so down to earth and music comes naturally to him. His pop song ‘Girl Saves Boy’ is a popular tune and evokes a feeling of romance and fun. Michael’s voice could ease your mind and lessen your woes. Next up was Joshua Grierson and Inge Beckmann. The melodic harmonizing of their voices sent shivers down my spine. Listening to Inge was a first for me, as I had never before heard her and when she started singing I was spellbound. Inge’s vocals are ethereal, theatrical and poignant. Joshua’s song ‘Fighter Plane’ was performed with such sincerity by both Joshua and Inge that I could picture the scene of a soldier in the time of war, reminiscing about his love for his mother. This is a beautiful song with a deep heartfelt message that can only make you mindful of the pain felt by men at war.
I love that about Joshua’s music, as his lyrics tell stories and he brings his music alive by painting the scenario with such expression. His music is deeply moving and compelling. Joshua is one of the greatest lyricists in SA. Inge then introduced her brand new song that she has just written – Inge shared that she is dedicating it to Kirstenbosch Gardens and the beauty of Africa. Laurie Levine and Josie Field decided to take their show ‘Side By Side’ on the road, bringing their music literally to your doorstep! Their acoustic set utilizes a variety of instruments including guitar, banjo, ukulele and more.
Laurie has an angelic sound to
her voice and Josie has a deep powerful voice and together they bring a blend of folk, blues and a touch of country to their music. Some old and some new – which bring a feeling of unity and community. I was fortunate enough to watch them at Studio 7 on their last visit to the mother city and walked away with a feeling of peace and serenity. The bond between Laurie and Josie is something beautiful to behold. When love for music and skill are joined together, magic happens. Manouche is a band with a definite gypsey/jazz feel to their music. I loved every minute of their spunk and the jovial touch they bring to their performance. Anneli Thandeka is a ball of fire and she sets your heart ablaze with her light. The band comprises of Anneli Thandeka Kamfer-Vocals, Lize Dekker -Accordion/ keyboard and vocals, Renee Stander-Violin, Bernard Kotze-guitar/composer/arranger, Sarah Blake-double bass. They had the audience eating out of their hand so to speak and people were humming along and enjoying the spontaneity of the moment.
Albert Frost is a name that has been around for years and what a name he has become in our country. It was the first time I was watching him and I was swept away by the pure brilliance of his guitar playing. His music has a blues feel, but his voice has an unmistakable rock edge. Albert works well with other artists and this is a great strength. I could see his respect for his fellow artists and theirs in return. No small wonder that Albert is so well known. Albert has performed at almost every festival in SA. Next up was a man that made my heart melt with his guitar playing. Tony Cox is a winner of 3 South African ‘best instrumental’ SAMA awards. Tony was born in Zimbabwe but has lived in South Africa since 1969. His music has a rich African feel to it and sitting there listening to him play I felt like this is where I belong– a feeling of home was felt. Tony is a gentle, quiet and unassuming artist with a heart of gold.
A little lady by the name of Natasha Meister walked onto the stage and all I can say is dynamite sure comes in small packages. Natasha has a rich, powerful voice that has a true ‘bluesy’ feel to it. Together with her guitar playing and singing she dominated the stage with her presence. Natasha’s music is eloquent and she left a deep impression with her soul performance. Mark Fransman and Jeremy Olivier teamed up to perform some songs. Mark is a multi-award winning producer and artist that hails from South Africa. He has worked with artists such as Pharaoh Sanders, Finley Quaye, Soweto Kinch, Louis Moholo, René McLean, Hein van de Geyn, Zim Nqwana, Sibongile Khumalo, Winston Mankunku, Jimmy Dlu Dlu and Dave Young to mention a few. For all the jazz lovers present Mark certainly was the cherry on the cake. Jeremy performed his song ‘Beautiful’ and I don’t think there was a dry eye after his performance.
Jeremy has a charming stage personality. He has worked with several international artists, such as George Benson, Katherine Jenkins, Jonathan Butler and more recently, Daniel Bedingfield. Beatenberg are a group of three young men who have wowed and charmed young people across SA. Their music has a pop/electro feel and there is a definite quirky style to their music. Totally versatile, young and different – this is the sound they bring. I think this is what captivates the heart, as there is no sound that can be compared to Beatenberg – they are totally original and one of a kind. A special mention must be made to the drummer who caught every eye present with his enthusiasm and expression. Luna Paige, Guy Collins and Gerald Clark are names that are well known throughout the country. It was the first time I was to hear Luna sing and her voice has a haunting presence that lingers long after and at the same time has a lilting ‘honey like’ quality that soothes the soul.
I have been listening avidly to her songs this week and am deeply moved by her beautiful sound. No wonder Luna was teamed up with Guy and Gerald. Luna’s 5th album will be released sometime in May. I had the pleasure of watching Guy Collins perform at the Folk Festival held at the Baxter Theatre last year and he certainly was the highlight of the evening. From the moment he walks onto a stage you feel a stillness enter your heart and your ears become deaf to everything else around you. It is almost like your soul has ears. Guy has a certain presence that cannot be denied and seeing him holding a banjo in his hands brought instant exhilaration. His love for music is written all over his face and you walk away enriched for the experience of who Guy Collins is.
Gerald Clark is an artist that has been around for more then a decade and has a strong blues/country sound. The Afrikaans community love his album ‘Sweepslag’, which received three Tempo nominations, two Vonk nominations and even a SAMA nomination for Best Alternative Afrikaans Album. Over the years, Gerald has also collaborated with many big-name artists in the SA music industry from Albert Frost to Bok van Blerk and Van Coke Kartel. Here is an artist that works as a team player alongside his fellow artists in the industry. Lead singer for the rock band Springbok Nude Girls, Arno Carstens has released 7 albums and had 18 top ten singles. He has won 5 SA music awards. Arno together with Albert Frost wooed the audience with their catchy sound. ‘The Another Universe’, Arno’s debut solo album, was released in 2003 and as one of the most anticipated solo projects in South African music history, did not disappoint, becoming the biggest selling South African English rock album this side of the millennium. The platinum selling album won a SAMA Award for Best Rock Album in 2004. Arno has a strong rock/pop sound and I could tell the crowd knew his music.
A big thank you goes out to Gavin Minter who organized this event and who did a superb job as MC for the evening. Gavin truly outdid himself with yet another mind blowing experience. He is a musician in his own right and a very accomplished one at that. Gavin Minter is a South African singer, saxophonist, percussionist, writer, composer, producer, promoter and music agent. South Africa is rich in many talented artists and what a delight it was to sit on African soil listening to music that is truly South African. Kirstenbosch Gardens is one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world and what a picture perfect setting for a music event such as this. Looking around at the view of the majestic mountain and gardens I felt that nature had touched everyone present, just as music had touched and stirred the nature of mankind. To experience the joy of music, is to experience a spiritual connection. Constantia Waldorf Market Review and photos by Rene Maritz
aturday 29 March 2014 was the perfect day for a day in the sun surounded by trees and a view of the mountain. The leafy suburb of Conantia is so picturesque and fitted the mood of the day, with the beautiful d trees that seemed to welcome you in. Situate on a 15 acre property in paanschematriver Road, Constantia. Waldorf is a school that aims to provide a modern form of education that meaningful for the child in these times. he teacher strives to keep alive in a pupil the interest and sense of woner with which he or she enters school. Upon arriving on the land all I ould think was, what a beautiful setting for a school and any kid would hrive in such an environment. To read more about Waldorf and what hey’re about follow the link: http://www.waldorfconstantia.org.za/ ndex.php he market delivered everything that it set out to do. Tables were set up l around the grounds. My friends and I sat sipping our tea and coffee nd eating delicious dainties handmade by some of the pupils. There was lovely indoor market featuring many handcrafted items, secondhand othing, delicious treats for the taste buds and much more. My favourite eat of the day was the tasty ‘chilly bites’ – big yum.
ntertainment was definitely on offer for everyone – from the young to the not so young. To watch e children enjoying the merry-go-round swings and the like, made me think of my own childod. Delighted faces could be seen all round. the main tent performers were lined up all day to entertain those who enjoy ‘live’ music. We andered over to see who would be performing.
ther performers had already taken to the stage and next up was Jamie upiter. What a versatile artist he is! Jamie never ceases to bring a smile. solo performer who usually uses an array of ‘rootsy’ percussion and ingenous instruments with guitar and bass, Jamie creates a sound that is oth modern and authentic. I had previously had the opportunity of atching Jamie play and sing and fondly remember his unique style and uch of humour. amie’s music has a rich African vibe about it and bright colours come to ind, as his music gives one a feeling of a warm fire burning bright on a ark night. here is so much more to Jamie as a person, which I discovered upon dong some research. Jamie has actively involved himself with Drumcafe in
Johannesburg facilitating up to 800 people in interactive musical experiences at schools as well 100′s of social events. Wherever he seems to go, he seems to touch hearts with his unique harmonies and Jamie uplifts spirits. To find out more about him check out his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Jamie-Jupiter-One-ManBand/174779149212821 Next up was Miles Sievwright – someone who I had hoped to see for some time and now here I was watching him sing and play his guitar. Mile’s has a true folk heart which comes across immediately upon listening to him. All I could think sitting there, was this is music for the people. I felt like a child that had escaped this world and entered a fairytale where princes, princesses and castles exist – a moment suspended in time. Miles comes across as a man who is deeply in tune with nature. As the music enveloped us, it seemed to become one with our surroundings. The trees and the mountains and the natural beauty all around us seemed to echo the beauty of his music. If a person is feeling down, I’m sure after listening to Miles a feeling of euphoria would be felt. To find out more about Miles Sievwright, check out his facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ milessievwright or listen to him here: http://soundcloud.com/ milessievwright Nik Rabinowitz was certainly a great highlight to the market goers with his witty ways. What made it special was the fact that Nik had attended Waldorf through his childhood years and listening to him regale old stories from the past and all his fondest memories of school life, made it real. Nik was in top form and tears were literally streaming down my face and I’m sure many others. The children edged forward as close as they could and were just as delighted by the fun that comes with who Nik Rabinowitz is. Unfortunately the day came to an end far too early for me. The fresh air, the gentle breeze and the beauty encapsulated by every little nuance made me want to stay for hours. I look forward to the next one with great anticipation.
JOSHUA GRIER
Joshua Grierson went on a recent tour to Johannesburg and the next stop was Durban. I caught up with him to find out specifically how his trip went. To stoke my curiosity about his career, I thought I would ask him a couple of intimate questions that don’t often get answered. Joshua was happy to oblige this curious cat.
What brought about your tour? In late December, through a turn of serendipity, singer-songwriter Louise Day and I ran into each other at a gig in Stanford. We got talking about some form of new collaboration and once we were back in Cape Town, we started rehearsing for said idea. We wanted to partner the idea with the established performing arts organization, City Soiree and after a meeting with their founding member, Gerhard Maree, we embarked on a series of
house-concerts in Gauteng and Durban in late March. Unfortunately due to work commitments, Louise could not attend the tour but I decided to do the tour alone and see what happens. What did you gain from this experience – did you gain new connections and how was the response from the audience? With each tour one hopes to make new fans and meet longstanding ones and through my shows in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban, I was able to do just that. The response to my music was exceptional and I walked away feeling vindicated. The week outside of Cape Town, also gave me an opportunity to let my (proverbial) hair down and do some necessary reflection on where it is I want to be by 2015. It also happened that I got to meet fellow singer-songwriter Naas Veld, as he supported me in
RSON
Johannesburg and Pretoria and suffice to say, I am a new big fan. I heard that there is a possibility of an overseas tour, is this true and if so, when and where? It is most certainly on the cards for 2015. My initial hope was for later this year but due to the need of another album first and funds to still be generated, it has had to be put on ice for now. Is there a new album on the horizon? Yes. My 2nd studio album, Strange Heart (A Suburban Short Story), will be released in either June or July of this year. What music are you currently listening to? Nat King Cole, the new Beck (Morning Phase), Vance Joy, Stone Jets, Naas Veld, the new St. Vincent (St. Vincent) and a lot of older stuff I grew up with.
You host your own radio show weekly on Assembly Radio, namely The Rising Gold. Which has opened my heart and mind personally to so many new artists and artists that I had never heard of before. Tell us more about this initiative and elaborate why it is so uniquely different to other stations in the country? For as long as I can remember, I always had aspirations to be a radio DJ but most stations dont allow the DJ to decide what he would play. Long gone are the days where DJ’s garnered listeners based on what they had to say. So with my show and thanks to Assembly Radio, I was given a rare opportunity to have complete carte blanche on what I play and say. I try and run a slick show with something new for everyone and love focusing on the local musicians that make this city exciting. We regularly have a ‘Absolutely-
Fabulous-In-Studio-Live-Artist’ and with the artist, I discuss their career, they play a couple songs live-on-air and we feature some of their studio recordings. My show aint the exception to the rule but certainly an alternative to a lot of other shows out there. Which artists do you admire and look up to and who would you personally like to work with if you were granted the opportunity? Locally I would love to work with Josie Field, Laudo Liebenberg and Given Nkanyane. I have had the good fortune of working with some of the finest talent this country but really admire Rian Malan, Gary Thomas and Guy Buttery. Internationally: The list is as long as a dream. What is the importance of connecting with other artists? I cannot stress it enough: Working with other artists in your community, is the reason why you been given the gift of music in the first place. We all benefit from it. Step out of your comfort zone and get involved. You recently performed at Kirstenbosch Gardens for the CT Folk Festival, how did this experience affect you as an artist? It satisfied my heart and soul indefinitely, to be part of such a line-up. All the years of hard work paid off for me to play those 8 minutes on such a stage. What other new developments or projects are in the pipeline for the fans? A 3rd studio album early 2015. Later this year, my side-project Big Exit will release its first EP. More collaborations with Simon Van Gend, Louise Day and others. A new side of myself – Jak Tomas – to come out in 2015.
When you hear a new song that you can relate to, does it inspire you to get busy writing? Always. Being an incredible lyricist do you have the urge to write a book one day and if so, what would you want to write about? I have stopped counting the books I have started. I am distracted far too easily but one day it will arrive on your doorstep. The kind of work I would produce, would be a mixture of fact and fiction. You are a very versatile artist, what is your favorite genre so to speak? I have not got one. It’s just got to make me either smile, cry or dance. What does music mean to you personally? A complete abandonment from a rational life/moment. Do you sometimes get lost in your music? Yes. If you had any personal advice to give someone starting out, what would it be? Make sure that this is what you want to do for the rest of your life. Once decided, don’t stop for anyone or anything. Would you ever consider doing a road trip from town to town? Of course.
Are there people out there that take advantage of artists in a bad way? Yes. What is one of the most moving comments you have had from a fan? “You touched parts of my soul, that I never knew was there” As listeners we often feel that music moves us to the point that our hearts beat faster and emotions get the better of us – does this ever happen to you as the artist – watching other artists, and when playing your own music? Definitely. Music is like an ocean. It’s unpredictable and always changing. Just for the fun – share what your favorite food is and do you have a favorite hang out? Finely prepared seafood. I love The Power & The Glory. Thank you for indulging my curiosity Josh. As a loyal fan I look forward with anticipation to see what the future holds for you. My personal belief – the best is yet to come. AWAKENINGS featuring Grie Review and photos by Rene Maritz Saturday 8 March 2014 a friend and I decided to have a girl’s night out and what better way could there be then ‘live’ music. This was a ‘first’ home gig as such and I had a feeling that it was going to be a lovely evening. ‘Awakenings’ is situate on a hill in Upper Towers Road, Muizenberg. The venue is breathtaking beautiful and literally left me speechless. We arrived early, two eager beavers smiling from ear to ear, anticipating the evening ahead. With our drinks and snacks in hand we were welcomed in warmly by the host of the evening.
We climbed stairs and then climbed some more stairs and once we arrived at the entrance we were amazed at what awaited us. The room looks out on a lush garden and on the one side of the room there is an indoor garden and behind us a solid wall built out of stone. The room was filled with comfy cushions and warm blankets – a lovely warm fire was burning on the garden side and I literally felt like I was in some private ca
At 7.30 the music started – Simon van Gend and Joshua Grierson are music c their individuality and together they complement one another. Two unique table as such and beautiful music is always made. Life has moments of happ joy, pain, love and sometimes even hate. When I listen to their music I can re these different spheres and aspects of life. Often we don’t want to deal with ple, but when you are exposed to music, it opens your mind and heart and m you conscious of them and almost drives you to a place of wanting to confro building thereof.

collaborators that support one another in souls that bring everything they have to the piness, sadness, anger, peace, light, darkness, elate to it, because their music exposes all h our emotions and issues we have with peomakes you reflect on these emotions; it makes ont the deeper aspects of relationship and
I come away with a feeling of wanting to love harder and understand deeper. When I look at Simon I see a quirky character, from his hair to his style of dress he just has this laid back style and I always think in my mind’s eye that Simon could not possibly ever experience a moment of anger. His music has a way of penetrating your mind, in a quiet, almost meditative way. Like poetry to the soul, so Simon’s music is to the mind. Starting there and creeping into the heart. Simon’s songs are about love and feelings and searching for love. Watching Simon perched on his chair hugging his guitar you cannot help but think, here is a deep man. Simon is also part of a band known as Simon & the Bande à Part – an introspective indie/folk/rock band from Cape Town, whose music has been described as a unique blend of folksie foot-tapping red wine fireside poetry. This trio, with Simon on vocals and acoustic guitar, Eric Michot (aka Mr Kito) on bass and Ross Campbell (Urban Creep, Benguela, Fetish) on drums, has released 4 albums to date. Simon’s Bandcamp page is : http://simonandthebandeapart.bandcamp.com/album/ blinking-and-breathing Simon has a new project on the go – writing a song a week, here is the link if you would like to go take a listen: http:// asongaweek.simonvangend.com/ Also check out his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/ Simon-van-Gend-Band/12489936354 His website: http://www.simonvangend.com/ You Tube Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g65L5RMwBe4 When looking at Joshua I see a man who has experienced life in every sense of the word. The road he has travelled has been a long, bumpy
one and Joshua is always open and honest about his life. He wears his truth, and his face tells a story. His life is like an open book exposed for all to see. His music for me has always revealed the human nature and has made me think deeply about life and the complexities thereof. Joshua speaks his truth through his music. If you have been to his shows you will understand what I am saying. Joshua is someone who shows his passion and energy with every ounce of his being. He lives it out for all to see on the stage. Joshua has a natural way about expressing himself and never holds back. I often find myself thinking of the deep powerful lyrics of his songs and how personal they are and how they have made me see myself. We are all human, living in a broken world. To me beauty is about humanness, truth and rawness. To be able to be raw and vulnerable this is true beauty. Joshua has a way of showing this through his music and I admire him
for it. He is not pretentious, but genuine and real – what you see, is what you get. There is no mask but an open face and open heart. Joshua is constantly creating something new and listening to some of his new material I cannot help smile at what a new and fresh sound is coming through…from folk to pop – he never ceases to surprise. Check out his Bandcamp page to listen to his double-disc album, recorded live at Alma Cafe : http://joshuagrierson.bandcamp.com/album/ joshua-grierson-friends-live-at-the-alma-cafe Check out his Facebook page to find out where and when he will be performing next: https://www.facebook.com/joshuagriersonmusic Other links: http://www.joshuagrierson.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2X0stmt3rA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_82cgmBfFTM Simon sang and played some of his own songs and so did Josh, but when they sang together harmonizing and blending their voices, it brought a tranquil feeling within and watching the people gathered I could see how the music stirred them deeply and they embraced all of it. Two brilliant minds coming together, two hearts sharing their music and passion with a captive audience. Together Simon and Joshua are known as Grierson Van Gend. Check out their Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/ GriersonVanGend I hope there will be many more of these ‘home gigs’ to follow, as the feeling of ‘home’ was truly felt.

Joss Stone Press conference Review and pics by Nadine Noortman JOSS STONE, everyones queen of soul... Back in South Africa for the first time since she rocked the stage at the Live Earth Concert in 2007. Having kicked off her TOTAL WORLD TOUR in Morocco, South Africa has been her second stop on the map with Mauritius, Tunisia, Australia and then New Zealand to follow next. All just part of ‘Leg 1’ in this great adventure she has embarked on. As a little girl, Joss assumed the term ‘world tour’ meant exactly that. A WORLD TOUR. Finally bringing her dreams to life, she intends to play a gig in every single country on the planet, she strongly believes no one country is more important than another. While on the road, Joss makes being away from home easier by making it FUN. Filling her time and days with excitement and the things she loves. Seeing the rhinos in South Africa having been just one of the things on her list of activities. Especially close to her heart (even on tour) is the work she does with so many different charities. With her visit to the Pilanesberg National Park & Wildlife Trust she helped raise awareness for the fundraising they carry out to support conservation projects in and around the park. Spreading herself around she helps where she can, being a voice for these charities and getting others involved for an even greater impact on the lives of so many.
With collaborating being one of the things this soulful artist truly enjoys, fans can expect to see many collaborations with the different local artists from all the countries she will be visiting during her Total World Tour.
Being a good hearted free spirit, a rule that she follows for her life in general is to go with the flow and do what feels good. As Joss says, This full of life young soul artist, known for her barefoot performances, base her decisions on FUN.
Not being a commercialized artist was a big decision in her life and a path she chose intentionally. Till this day never looking back, as this gave her freedom and a life of quality back home in England. Still living in the same house she grew up in, she appreciates and enjoys a lifestyle that is close to her friends and family. Absolutely loving where she lives, it remains a very special place to her. By not doing too many press conferences and walking down too many red carpets, she manages to keep her life more private. Extremely humble and grounded, Joss stays conscious and remembers the reason why she began her journey. It was an absolute pleasure representing Fanbase Music Magazine at the Joss Stone Press Conference on 1 April 2014 at the Maslow Hotel in Sandton. Very casual, relaxed and true to the FUN lifestyle Joss has chosen to suit her stunning lively personality. So as the British would say: It was LOVELY!
JOSS STONE REVIEW There’s a reason certain quality that all great artists (and by artist I mean no one who lipsyncs or pretend to play an instrument) posses. It’s an “x-factor”. The ability to magnetically pull you without knowing it into one uncontrollable and startling out burst. This being the ever classy “Holy SH*T” that involuntarily exits your mouth when these artists strut their stuff live. Joss Stone was no different. I always knew she was a great artist. I always knew the teen I saw on television years ago had an incredible voice. But the now twenty something woman had matured and I let out uncontrollable and classy “HOLY SH*T” when she let out a soulful and passionate series of notes so clear and powerful that you immediately felt that “everyone who paid for their seat here will not be disappointed”. On that note, I do have to mention something really important. The opening act. Now very rarely does the opening act compare, compete or as you might have noticed even deserve to be on the same stage as the main attraction. This was not the case when The Muffins hit the stage. This group of talented musicians took a crowd that was there exclusively for the Joss Stone performance and MADE them listen to them. Not by force, but by delicate and passionate African and soul rhythms laced with harmonies and melodies vocally and musically that enchanted the crowd. It was simply magical. Simply put… I did not know talent like that existed in SouthAfrica in ANY genre of music. When they finished their incredibly entertaining set the crowd erupted in a deafening roar that confirmed that they where as proud as I was to be South-African at that moment.

Joss Stone graced the stage wearing a peach evening dress and her long golden hair shining in the spotlight. She wore a smile that melted all the hearts in the venue and upon reaching her microphone greeted the people nervously but full of life. Everyone there was in love with her… I could tell by the drooling of both male and female. As I mentioned before I had an involuntary comment exit my body the moment she started singing. She was graceful. She was kind. She was powerful. She was beautiful… And she knew it. She glided down to place herself in between her seated fans and told them to get up with a sort of magic. Like you see in the Dracula movies where he gets people to do what he wills. She stated that “sitting isn’t good for music” and I was inclined to agree.
She sported one of the best session bands in the world that lifted the crowd with their performances of the insanely well written songs. The insatiable Miss Stone owned the stage like a queen would her throne during every song. And in between performances she receded to a very friendly and almost overly excited shy demeanour that further made the atmosphere in the venue feel like it was a concert she was performing in your own living room. Stating that “Soul music is not a genre but in fact means playing whatever feels good” made me realise that Joss Stone was an artist in the true sense of the word that had
perfected her art to through many years on the road. She was indeed cut out of stone (pun intended).
I can not describe the incredible voice she musters during every song. At on point I closed my eyes and was transported back in time. I listened to all the great female soul vocalists like Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Nina Simone. Hearing her sing on an album and hearing her embellish (but not show off) in her vocal range and absolutely perfect pitch are two entirely different things. It gave everyone in the venue a drug like high. It is something that no one who has never seen her perform live would ever be able to understand. Leaving that concert, me and my lovely fiancé who accompanied me to this performance couldn’t stop talking about how simply put GREAT Joss Stone is. She is a talent that I believe will live forever.
My Recommendation: It’s cool to buy the albums but do your best to see if you can’t get a DVD of a live performance in a small venue. You might get an inkling of what I experienced. ALSO do yourself a favour and head to a Musica near you and give The Muffins a listen. If you’re into great music… you’ll be into them.
How did you get into photography?
What camera are you currently using?
Growing up I was always the kid with a camera, but I had never considered
I use a Nikon D3200. Saving up for a D800, one day, when I am big.
making a career out of it until my husband suggested it just over 2 years ago. Making your hobby your career is a dream so few get to carry out.
Why do you like Photography? Photography is a way for me to express my creativity, and since I suck at drawing, painting, music‌ Seriously though, I love being able to capture specific moments in people’s lives and being the person to immortalise a memory for someone else is something very Special What style of Photography do you Like? I consider myself to be a candid photographer. I am not a fan of strict, forced poses. I prefer for my clients to almost forget that I am there and to enjoy themselves, that way the smiles and the laughter are genuine.
Where do you see yourself in five years, in terms of your photography? Currently, photography is still a part-time job for me, so I would be very happy if, in 5 years’ time, photography was my full time job.
Who is your favourite photographer and why? Wow, there are so many in so many different genres! From a live events perspective, I would have to say Sean Brand. His images are stunning and always crystal clear, which is an achievement on its own for concert photog-
Christine Meintjes, Laura Jane and Adrian Steirn are also incredibly talented and I could only hope to be able to take photos of that quality one day. What advice do you have for upcoming photographers? I would have to say making connections with other, established photographers is key. I chatted to a few when I first started, including Tim Hulme, and he gave me some great advice. He told me “Don’t worry so much about clients, worry more about getting your work better and better... As you improve more and more clients will find you.” This was very valuable for me. How can people get hold of you? I am available at kresha@kresharossphotography.co.za or on Facebook.
The Ballistics Releases Debut Music Video The Ballistics is proud to announce the release of their debut music video for the song ‘No Harm’, created by Roundabout Films. The music video release follows short on the heels of the band’s name change from Ballistic Blues to The Ballistics. The video was premiered at their name change show earlier this month at Aandklas in Stellenbosch and the band hopes that the crowd’s immense approval will be echoed by the broader public. The Ballistics released their debut EP last year, containing five tracks including ‘No Harm’. Crowds caught on to this song the fastest and therefore making it the first single and music video song was an obvious choice. The band, together with Roundabout Films, decided on the concept and feel for the video after various options were weighed up. A touch of vintage in the form of a black and white video was selected, which links well with their music’s old-school blues flavour. The concept of the video is a look inside The Ballistics’ stage performances. The video serves as a portrayal of the energetic live persona that fans have become accustomed to when watching them perform. “It is that raw image of being on stage and playing your heart out and seeing other people enjoy it just as much”, the band explains. The shoot was filmed during a series of actual live shows over a period of a few months in 2013. The shoot venues included Aandklas, Mercury Live, V & H Music studio and The Table Mountain Blues Summit festival. Cape Town based filmmaker, Barry de Villiers from Roundabout Films, is no stranger to the SA music scene. Making name for himself with videos for acts like Pretty Blue Guns, The Very Wicked and Lucy Kruger, his understanding of the industry helped to create the perfect video for The Ballistics. “The guy is truly a genius and the flavour he added gave a different dimension to the end product”, the band elaborates. The Ballistics says that seeing the music video for the first time made all the effort worth while. “You really get a sense of pride and you can laugh at all the weird things you do.” Check out the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiyuPp4n_Yo For interview requests and hi-res photographs, please contact: Dee Theart Detour Band Management & Publicity dee@detourmusic.co.za 084 841 0549 Twitter: @deetheart

Sonar has been constantly on the pulse of the current electronic music landscape and delivers experimentations with music’s newest trends, presenting fused collaborations between established artists and emerging talent. Since 2002, Sonar has hosted more than 50 festivals in all corners of the globe, all imbued with the festival’s philosophy of physical spaces and unique environments hosting a balanced mix of the best talent from the international and local music scene. Award-winning agency, Seed Experiences, will bring Sonar to South Africa on an annual basis, with the inaugural event scheduled for 16 December 2014 at the iconic Good Hope Centre in Cape Town. Cape Town’s recent accolade of World Design Capital 2014 makes it the natural city of choice for Sonar’s South African stop and, along with Barcelona, Tokyo, Reykjavik and Mexico, will make up the quintuplet of cities to host Sonar in 2014. Cape Town’s instalment will comprise an explosive mix of South Africa’s top electronic acts, headlined by one or two of the biggest international names. Ventura Barba, COO of Advanced Music, the company behind Sonar, comments, “Now part of Sonar, Cape Town joins a global music network, cementing its place in Electronic Music Culture (EMC). One of Sonar’s philosophies is to discover talent in new markets and give the artist or DJ the opportunity to perform at one of the global Sonar events. We’re looking forward to scouting South Africa’s acts and giving fresh talent the opportunity to perform at Sonar around the world.” Brian Little, managing director of Seed Experiences, explains the process behind the launch, “In order to ensure that the tour stays true to the essence of the Sonar brand, the entire Seed Experiences team travelled to Barcelona this June to gain insight into the event’s roll-out. We met with the production, marketing, sponsorship and artist liaison teams in order to launch a South African instalment that mirrors the international brand, while ensuring its relevance within the local context.”
Staying true to the design theme, Sonar Cape Town will take place at the Good Hope Centre, breathing life into the uniquely designed 1970s iconic architectural landmark and injecting it with a “cultural twist”. As Sonar is an internationally recognised festival brand that has grown solidly over more than 20 years, one can imagine its modest roots and look forward to seeing its newest host city, Cape Town, mirror the journey.
