way through the year, can you believe it? As usual we have a really kick ass issue install for you, but this issue is quite a significant one because it will probably be the last time you will ever see the magazine in this format and design. Before I explain myself I want to tell you a little story. When Fanbase Music magazine first hit the scene. We had some members in the team that helped to get the magazine out each month, but as life goes, people move on and we said goodbye to some team members who used to work for the magazine. With that said we needed a designer for the magazine, someone who can put the mag together, give it a funky look and put hours of time into the mag to get a good issue out every month. In came my Mom, she took on the difficult task of designing the mag and putting it all together and making sure all the interviews and articles were in place ready for release date each and every month. And to be honest my Mom has played a huge part in where the mag is today and the success we have been receiving from it. It’s always cool to know you count on your Mom at a time when it was either I stop doing the mag or we move forward with her help, and I am glad to say I moved on with her help because look where we are today. We all kind of knew, this won’t be a forever job for my awesome Mm, soon we will need a new designer so she can get on with her daily life and we can move forward with the mag. Well now the time has come that my Mom has decided to step down as the designer. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my Mom for all she has done for the mag in this difficult often thankless job and I would like to say I think I speak for everyone, that we really appreciate you and all you have done for the magazine. I love you and think you’re the best Mom in the world. However my Mom won’t be gone from the magazine completely as she will still be playing a big part in the magazine and doing the proof reading for the magazine and making sure it is still running in order. Now having said all that, back to my quote that this is the last time you will see the mag in this design, because from July we will be re-launching the mag with a new design team and a new look, so make sure you look out for that. We will also be launching our new website in July. Now back to this month’s awesome issue, we have some amazing featured bands in this month. Our cover feature is a cool band called The Signal Rose. It is the mastermind of Shaun Berry who we have featured before, always pushing boundaries and bettering himself. He’s come back with his new band offering of The Signal Rose Go check out that cool interview and make sure you keep a look out for the band’s new album, it’s really a great set of songs. In our Metal Section we feature some awesome metal acts, one being a Christian Metal band from Pretoria who go by the name of Rest for the Wicked, yes we have also featured them before but the boys have been really busy so we catch up with them and find out what they been up to. We also feature a band called Era who I actually heard on The Daily Dose with Doug Barker show on rockhardradio.net and when I heard them I had to get in contact with them and feature them in the magazine.

Speaking of Doug Barker and www.rockhardradio.net, if it wasn’t for that station and Doug in particular, I would never have heard of our next featured musician because the one night I was listening to the show and on came this lady named Jenny Franck who was being interviewed by Doug Barker, she seemed pretty cool so I listened in on the interview, but only once Doug played one of her tracks did I realise how talented this girl is, so once again I got hold of Doug and told him to put me in contact with her right away as I have to feature her in the magazine, so after chatting to her on Facebook, email and doing a Skype call, we soon realised that not only will I be featuring her in the magazine, but that she would also be a big asset doe Fanbase Music Magazine, yes you heard right. Jenny will be a permanent team member of Fanbase Music Magazine, covering some of the Indie bands in USA and bringing us some insight on the music scene back there. Fanbase Music Magazine is expanding and we are featuring more and more bands from all over the world, as much as South African music is always our first love and still our main mission to introduce South African music to the world and get SA on the music industry map, we cannot deny that more and more Indie bands from places like USA, UK and even Aussie are getting in contact with us to be featured, which is a great thing for our little publication that started just over 3 years ago. This means we are reaching an audience outside of South Africa which actually works hand in hand with our mission to expose S.A bands to the world. Having said all that, we have decided to recruit some writers from different countries around the world. Which is why we are happy to say Jenny will be a permanent writer for Fanbase. So go check out her interview to find out more about that info and also about her music career, she is one talented lady and we are so happy to have her on board – Welcome Jenny ! That is it for our June issue; enjoy the read and thanx for all your support over the years. Fanbase Music magazine is expanding, we’re getting better and always trying to push our boundaries, and we want to take you all along for the ride. I would like to thank my awesome team, my Mom for everything she has done for the mag and will continue to do for the mag. A big thank you!!! I would like to thank my awesome girlfriend, who not only already does so much for the magazine and for me, she will also be the new Head of Design of the magazine when we re-launch in July. I would like to thank the rest of the members who do so much for the magazine, The Durban Girls Chantell and Tania, you rock. Chaz Nielsen, thanks buddy you are awesome, Rene Maritz and Danni Lombard who is always such cool contributors to the magazine. Let’s rock Fanbase, make history and put South African music and all the other Indie bands on the map, where it so rightfully deserves to be. Peace out

Blues-rock band, The Ballistics, is excited to launch and release their debut full-length album, entitled ‘Calling For The Crazy’, at the end of May 2014. After co-winning the Rolling Stone Rockstarter band competition in 2013, the band was given the privilege to record a full-length album at V & H Music as one of the winning prizes. Recording took place early in 2014 under the seasoned recording and producing eye of Wouter van de Venter. The album was mastered by Rogan Kelsey at Kelsey Mastering in Gauteng. ‘Calling For The Crazy’ contains twelve tracks – ten tracks newly written and recorded for this album and two popular tracks taken from the band’s debut EP that was released in April 2013. The album title is also a track on the album and sums up the universal message and theme of the album superbly. “The theme of the album with all the tracks put side by side could be called audacious, but comical. The songs present pictures of fun and carelessness,” The Ballistics explains. The band will be launching the album during three shows in the Western Cape. There are plans in the pipeline to tour nationwide later in the year in order to expose more music lovers to ‘Calling For The Crazy’.

Hi Shaun and welcome back to Fanbase Music Magazine, it’s not the first time you have featured in our magazine, for the readers that do not know about you, can you briefly tell us a bit about yourself and your music career? Thanks so much for another opportunity to feature in Fanbase. I started playing music when I was 16, been in 3 different bands throughout my 20s, we released a few EPs, played the Cape Town circuit, had some radio play etc. In 2009 I went solo and released 3 albums in the next 4 years. Then I discovered my true self in The Signal Rose. And everything made more sense, and everything made less sense. Who are some of your musical influences? REM, The Smashing Pumpkins, My Bloody Valentine, The Manics, Placebo and Taryn Sudding. We all know your music from your solo career, but you are now in a band called the Signal Rose, can you tell us a bit about the band, who is in the band? Yeah, it’s a project name, as its all driven by me, but I do hire musicians for the parts I can’t or don’t want to do. When you write, record and release under a solo name then the South African public expects you to sound country or folk or like one of these irrelevant, obsolete, uninspiring and watered down idols winners that the masses love so dearly. There’s clearly a lack of taste. So I thought it best to work under a band name. Besides, I can get away with more this way. I don’t have to do only pop or rock. It gives you more freedom to experiment and express yourself within a broader scope. So people don’t know what to expect, but if they hear the name Shaun Berry, they probably think “ acoustic ballads “ or “kiddies songs” or whatever. Don’t get me wrong, I did love Kideo though! Mostly because of Taryn Sudding.

Alternative rock, Post Rock, Shoegaze, with incredible melodic and harmonic interplay, sometimes it’s SO good, it goes right over the heads of most. Confused looks everywhere. The thousand yard stare…we seem to get that a lot. It’s alien. The Signal Rose is quite an interesting name, can you tell us the story behind the name, and what it means? It just popped into my head ..Forgive me, I am a kidder. I went to see an old fortune teller lady once. She said it would be a good idea to call my band The Signal Rose as it is a strong name, representing everything that’s positive and successful. My band members at that time hated the name. But they weren’t in a position to argue with me seeing as they never really contributed too much anyways. This is also not true. You have once said Shaun Berry solo is dead and you working only on your band now, do you prefer to play in a band? Yes, I prefer to work with other people, especially in a live set up. I’m not the solo artist type, although I write everything myself. I enjoy the extra dimensions and confused energy that others bring, it’s always interesting and funny to see how they try really hard to interpret my music, but therein lays the value I suppose.

The Signal Rose

What genre of music would you classify “The Signal Rose” in?

Ok let’s talk albums, what albums have the band got out and are there any albums in the pipeline? The Signal Rose has released 2 albums so far. Last year we released “Distance means nothing” and this year we released “Bloodrun”. Both of them being absolute masterpieces and also available for free download at www.noisetrade.com/thesignalrose. Both albums were recorded and produced by Dylan Keyser at Flipside music. He is incredible and bands should work with him, he produces work of the highest calibre. I’m busy with demo’s for a possible future album, if I can secure funding then I will be going back into the studio in the next couple of months. One thing I have noticed about anything you put out there, it is always different and diverse, is that something you think about when you making an album or a track, you sound like you constantly trying to better yourself and break boundaries? Yes, I try to challenge myself. I hate repeating myself. I hate repeating myself. If we have never been to one of the bands gigs, what could we expect if we were to attend one of your gigs? An extremely passionate musical performance by someone who’s baring his soul for all to see. Also you’d be one of about 12 other people in the crowd, including Taryn Sudding. How can people get hold of you, what are your social Medias? Like our Facebook page at www.facebook/thesignalrose, please? Also www.youtube.com/thesignalrose and www.noisetrade.com/thesignalrose Thank you for doing this interview with us, do you have any last messages for your fans and our readers? You are welcome, thank you so much for the opportunity. Yes, I do have a message to the listening public : Stop complaining that there’s no good music out there anymore! For our fans : Thank you for having impeccable taste. We appreciate all of you. Much love always!x

Hi Jenny, thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music magazine, can you tell us a bit about yourself and explain to the readers who you are as a musician? Thanks for the interview! I am a singer/songwriter from the United States. Based out of Chicago, Illinois. I write with intention. Each song I write about means something to me, & comes from a very deep place. Every word comes from a personal experience. Most of the time when I begin writing a song, I don't know where it's going to go. Typically the direct intention of a song end up being driven by overcoming something, or a deeper understanding of life. I primarily play guitar, but can play piano as well. For whatever reason I find playing and writing with a guitar (as opposed to the piano) much more to my nature. Do you come from a musical background while growing up? Growing up, my family was not very musical. I did learn to play the violin and the clarinet in school. Other than that, I learned to play piano and guitar on my own. What genre of music would you classify your music in? Rock/Alternative Who are some of your musical influences? Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Silverchair, Alice In Chains, Johnny Cash, Niel Young, Elliott Smith...to name just a few...the list could go on for miles! You are a great song writer, can you tell us where you get your inspiration from? Writing Words and Melodies is something I have always just done, since I can remember. My true inspiration comes from living life everyday. Sometimes finding the strength to get up and get out of bed everyday is inspiration enough for me to write about it. For me there are many days where facing the day is an accomplishment in itself.

If we were to see you perform live, what could we expect from one of your gigs? I perform passionately, between songs I enjoy telling stories. I do also enjoy meeting my fans at gigs. Do you still get nervous before a gig? It's not so much the nerves that get to me, I do get anxious about performing that comes more from the excitement of the unexpected. Do you have any rituals before you go on stage, do you down a shot of vodka or something hehe? Yes! I'll do Shots of Patron! The music industry is very different in South Africa compared to your part of the world in the US, can you explain a typical night out in your country with regards to the music night life? Well if you are talking about showing up to a show as a part of the audience, I'd say my friends and I would first gather at a nearby restaurant or bar, get primed up and ready to go out to the gig! Can you name us some of your best achievements as a musician? As a songwriter, every album is special. My latest Album (Beautiful Lies) is really special because it was paid for and funded by my fans. The single off the album, Black Crows, is also going to be in a major motion picture, and is also being distributed by Sony.

Now, here at Fanbase Music magazine we have an announcement to make, and we are very excited about this very important news, as from our re-launch issue in July, Jenny will be having her own little section in Fanbase Music Magazine and covering bands from USA, Jenny can you tell us how you feel about being part of the Fanbase Team and also can you tell us what you will br bringing to the magazine? I am so excited and pleased to be a part of your magazine! Ideas are still in motion, my little section of the magazine is going to be a surprise. But yes, I will be highlighting and showcasing bands from my part of the world, the USA. I love your magazine, and I cannot wait to begin to share with you all what is going on in the USA!

“I perform passionately, between songs I enjoy telling stories.

SA Guitar Legends in RIDERS FROM THE STORM On the 20th of February 2012, the debut performance of Riders from the Storm was held at the Atterbury Theatre in Pretoria. The show is the first of its kind, with South African guitar legends sharing the stage for the first time. In this pilot event, the featured guitarists were Mel Botes, Piet Botha, Albert Frost, Mauritz Lotz, Valiant Swart and Nathan Smith as the mystery guest. Since inception, a mystery guest performer has contributed to the line-up, with Nathan Smith having been the first mystery performer/sixth guitarist. In every show the sixth mystery guest is recruited from guitarists who play in popular rock bands, session musicians and solo artists. Previous mystery performers include the like of Terence Reis (Dire Straits frontman), Jan Blohm, Dozi, Francois van Coke, Akkedis and Gerald Clark. Riders from the Storm is an initiative undertaken by South African rock guitarist, Mel Botes, wearing his producers cap. He is renowned for his craftsmanship on the electric guitar, his interpretations of legendary classics, his original compositions and, more recently, his classical repertoire. Botes himself is an accomplished guitarist. Popular shows featuring his talents have included the sellout, “Crazy Diamond - A tribute to Pink Floyd”; “Sultans of Swing - A tribute to Dire Straits” and his own original masterpiece, “David’s Confession About Time, Chapter II”. The show is directed by Richard H Nosworthy, who has collaborated with Mel Botes on numerous other productions. The performers are supported by a band, made up of top SA drummer Ghapi, Johan Kelber and Charles Geer. Details about the how were recently broadcast on a programme called Ruiters Van Die Nag, featured on KykNet, channel 146. The show gave the public the opportunity to get a glimpse of what these rockers do behind the scenes and in their dressing rooms. The artists featured on this show were Mel Botes, Piet Botha, Valiant Swart, Albert Frost, Robin Auld and Nathan Smith. Although the initial structure of the show was for each performer play one of their own original compositions and two covers, the show has been updated to add more original compositions, more collaborations and more instruments; in short, offering the audience much more. The launch of the new version of Riders from the Storm will be performed for the first time on the 25th of June 2014 at the newly refurbished Theatre of Marcellus, Emperors Palace.

The line-up for the newest show includes Mel Botes, Piet Botha, Albert Frost, Robin Auld, Nathan Smith and Mauritz Lotz as guest artist. Piet Botha is acknowledged as one of the pioneers of South African rock and has become a legend in his own time as front man of the everlasting rock outfit, “Jack Hammer, as well as recording a host of solo Afrikaans and English rock works. Albert Frost is one of the most versatile and talented guitarists in South Africa. Seeing him wield his myriad axes is a lesson in what is possible with a guitar. Slide guitar, harmonica, African blues guitar and soul vocals all feature in the fresh and vibrant sound of Robin Auld. An award winning artist with an international CV spanning many albums, he's performed and recorded in New York, London, Glasgow, Nashville, California and played events like Womad, the SA National Arts Festival, Belladrum Tartan Hearts, Gold Coast Oceanfest and Cambridge Folk Festival. Nathan Smith is undoubtedly also one of

The Parlotones back in SA for one day only Internationally acclaimed and multiplatinum selling rock band The Parlotones, are set to perform at the Old Mutual Music at the Lake concert, Durban Botanic Gardens on Sunday, 8 June. Accompanying The Parlotones is Durban-born singer, Michael Lowman. The Parlotones, whose experimental style incorporates traditional folk structures with modern rock sounds, are known to regularly champion the cause for sensitivity and care for the environment. Over the years, The Parlotones have lent their celebrity status to initiatives such as Earth Hour and Live Earth. They have also opened for bands such as LIVE, Maroon 5 and Coldplay. Back from Los Angeles, their return to the Durban Botanic Gardens ensures that funds are raised to assist the garden to carry out its mandate: to maintain and improve biodiversity, to educate the public and to look after an important space for community use. “Music is a powerful force that highlights important issues and The Parlotones’ role in the environmentalism space is welcome,” commented Bandile Mngoma, Old Mutual sponsorship manager. “Through this series at the gardens we raise awareness of the part each person plays in waste management, our impact on the environment as city dwellers and the role of plants in our environment,” said Mngoma. Volume Conflict set for “Strawman” album release (If all the hints on their Facebook page is anything to go by?)

Things have been heating up on the Volume Conflict facebook page of late, we have been waiting a long time for the debut highly anticipated album called “Strawman” and it seems (If the facebook page is anything to go by), The new album will be dropping very soon. For the past few weeks Volume Conflict have been dropping hints on their facebook page of the new album. Including posts about doing special “Strawman” photoshoots, posts that suggest a soon album launch. For now the band is keeping quiet about a set date but with all these hints on their facebook page I would say it is only a matter of time till we get to hear the album, and Fanbase Music Magazine is going to be there to give you all the details. To check out their facebook page click on the link below https://www.facebook.com/VolumeConflict

Linkin Park release new single featuring System Of A Down‘s Daron Malakian, ahead of new album release “The Hunting Party” Linkin Park have released a new track from their still to be released upcoming sixth studio album called “The hunting Party”. The new song, Rebellion, features System Of A Down‘s Daron Malakian and can be found on most good music sites on the internet. After listening to the track we at “Fanbase” can defiantly hear the influences of System of a down and we think this collaboration is awesome and the new track is great. Also set to appear on The Hunting Party is Rage Against The Machine‘s Tom Morello. We can’t wait to hear that. The Hunting Party will be out on June 16 through Warner

Brian “Head” Welsh forced to sit out of shows due to kidney stones It seems like Korn fans in Russia had a bit of a few disappointment shows as newly returned guitarist “Head” had to sit of a few shows due to a kidney stone illness. “Head”, who left the band almost 8 years ago re-joined the band officially late last year and has been touring with Korn on a tour. But due to a kidney stone failure the guitarist was forced to go under surgery forcing him to sit down from a few shows in Russia. Head later joined his band back on stage in Kansas City to complete the remaining shows of the tour. We at Fanbase are glad for his speedy recovery and wish him well with his health in the future

Hi folks, this month I share the show I attended at Studio 7, which featured the one and only Michael Lowman. Jeremy du Plessis, a local Capetonian, opened for Michael with a soulful performance. Michael is already a name that is well known throughout SA. Keep an eye on Jeremy who is destined for great things. Also featuring is Joshua Grierson who brought his friends - Given Nkanyane, Louise Day, Simon van Gend, Nicolai Roos, Julian Bach and Wesley Renecke, on board for an evening of music to warm the heart. I was approached to review the albums of Gerald Clark! I was blown away by the opportunity and deeply touched! Hope you enjoy reading and may music touch your soul! Until next time friends, Ciao, Rene

Joshua Grierson and Review and photos by RenĂŠ Maritz

friends at Mercury

Tonight was a night where a group of artists came together in unity to share their gifts and we were the recipients. Joshua Grierson had a plan – the plans was to perform his songs and he decided to gather together some of his fellow artists and friends to join him. A collaboration of some of the finest musicians in SA, came together to share what they do best and to share it with the community gathered there. It was an evening of bringing together different voices and styles to create a beautiful tapestry stitched and woven together to produce a rich work of art. The music washed over us like a warm sea. The venue hosting the artists for the evening was Mercury, one of the biggest clubs in Cape Town. Special evenings are created for events such as this. Mercury’s live stage has hosted some of the biggest rock ‘n’ roll, indie and other acts that you’ll find in the country. They continually create a platform for up and coming talent. There are long queues on popular nights. The acoustics are truly the best in Cape Town. To find out about events happening at Mercury, follow them on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mercury/19807234016?fref=ts Sometimes it’s good to have an evening of escapism from reality of life, just for a while. A moment suspended in time – a time to dream, but also be awakened.Looking back on this night- a feeling of floating on a big fluffy cloud that moves slowly through an endless blue sky, this was what I felt. Like a walk in nature, where nature paints its own picture and speaks its own language. The artists took to the stage to create something that can only be described as a bright starry night, where the stars came out to shine and in this case, they shone brightly, each bringing their own gift of harmonies and rhythm – flowing in unison with one another. You could sense the unity of the artists. Joshua Grierson has one of the most powerful voices and it resonates with deep emotion and feeling so intense. Whether loud or gentle, Joshua lays his soul bare. A crescendo of different levels can be reached as far as Joshua’s voice is concerned – from strong and powerful to soft and gentle. Joshua’s music is like a kaleidoscope of many different patterns, shapes and colours. A bit of ‘soul’, a bit of ‘blues’ and ‘folk’ – Joshua Grierson always has a little something up his sleeve, so to speak. Each time he brings something new, something old and even bold – it is a culmination of young and old, shadows of dark and light are revealed through his lyrics. Stories so deep, that make you not just ponder about life, but wonder. Joshua loves working with other artists and has a certain way of engaging and working alongside them to create something mind blowing and life changing for the broader community. For Joshua it’s not just about him, it’s about giving back and what music can accomplish. Joshua has many exciting plans lined up and if you would like to find out more about him and his events, be sure to follow him on Facebook. For listening: https:// soundcloud.com/jkgrierson Follow Joshua on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ joshuagriersonmusic

The various artists that joined Joshua for the evening are Given Nkanyane, Simon van Gend, Julian Bach, Nicolai Roos, Wesley Graham Reyneke and last, but not least the beautiful Louise Day. Given Nkanyane is a man who has a gift and he shares that gift with whoever has ears to hear. The gift is his voice, which is like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter’s night. His voice has the ability to melt the hardest of hearts. Given sings with such soul, that I am reminded of the great Marvyn Gaye. For Given, It is not just about his voice, he is a humble soul with a heart that is as beautiful as his voice. From the minute he opens his mouth and he utters his very first word, it moves you. Given is in a band called Stone Jets with his right hand man, Manfred Klose. Together they form a powerful duo. Take a listen to their awesome tunes here: https://soundcloud.com/stone-jets-music Follow them on Facebook: https:// www.facebook.com/stone.jets Simon van Gend is someone who creates an impression of a man with wisdom not yet understood by many. Simon has a style that is uniquely ‘Simon’ – his quirky style grows on you, like a particular food you either like a little, or not at all, but once truly tasted, you cannot get enough. Simon is someone who writes some of the finest music I have ever read or listened to. His writing ability speaks volumes to the depths of mankind. Each week Simon writes a new song. His goal is to write a song a week, for 365 days. Each and every song is brilliantly written – the hand that writes it, reaches into your mind and soul and grasps you, tugging at your heart with poetry and stories of love, life and struggles. What I love about Simon is that his music speaks to me about our humanness and our failings. His lyrics are like a puzzle where there are loose pieces of one’s life, each needing a place to fit and once found, complete the puzzle. His music makes me reflect on the mysteries of life. Simon is also part of the band known as Simon and the Bande à Part. Julian Bach is a new name to me and I was eagerly looking forward to hearing more about him. I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. Julian certainly brings something different. I listened to his music on soundcloud and it is refreshing and has a new sound. Watching Julian, I could tell that here is a man that loves what he does. His expressive face told a thousand stories and listening to him, I realized that he feels deeply passionate about his music. To quote: From its opening track, Ride—with its rolling choruses and sing-along melodies—to the outlandishly eerie waltz, Ode To No One—right up until the closing track, the honest and anthemic Pirates On A Dead Sea—Julian’s new music captures a quality of songwriting entirely unique to him, but somehow still manages to sound familiar. Keep your eye on this young man who is destined for big things.Take a listen:https:// soundcloud.com/julian-bach Follow: https://www.facebook.com/pages/JulianBach/233424670017977 Nicolai Roos plays various guitars and is involved with the band Big Exit – an alternative rock band. He works with sound and arrangement and forms an integral part of the band. I have heard him play at various venues with the band and can honestly say he is a man with much talent. Big Exit certainly measure up to any of the big names out there. Listen to them here: https:// soundcloud.com/bigexitband Follow: https://www.facebook.com/bigexitband Wesley Graham Reyneke is a faithful friend to Joshua and his enthusiasm and spontaneity is something to behold. He provides background percussion at shows and it is always a treat to watch him in action. Wesley is just always there – a stalwart so to speak. Louise Day has a voice that is equal to her beauty. Listening to her, I found myself thinking, surely an angel has just walked into the room. Louise has a sincere heart and her eyes speak volumes – there is an inner glow which shines forth to the outside and stuns you with its brightness. Joshua and Louise captivate the audience with ‘My June To Johnny’ The biggest thrill of the evening was listening to her with Joshua on his song ‘My June To Johnny’ which is a song about unrequited love and always tugs at the heartstrings. Their voices blended together like velvet – rich, smooth and silky; I could imagine that if one could touch it, it would feel like this. Together they captured the true essence of the song. The evening sadly came to an end and I left feeling renewed and thankful for another night of the finest music, ready to face the the big world once again. Last night I drove to Seapoint along the scenic route and looking out at the view of the sea it did wonders for my mood, which was already elevated due to the events that were about to take place. My anticipation grew with each passing minute and I excitedly drove up and parked my car. My friend and I climbed the little steps which take you up to Studio 7. After watching Michael Lowman at the CT Folk Festival held at Kirstenbosch Gardens I thought it a good idea to get to watch him play a couple more of his songs and what better place then Studio 7. Studio 7 can only be described as a private venue which gives one the exclusive opportunity of hearing ‘live’ artists in a quiet, homely venue, where people respect the artist as a creative being and as a person. With drinks in hand everyone settled down on comfy couches or cushions and I could immediately sense a hush fill the air. I can truly say that this venue is perfect in this regard, as it is small, personal and intimate. To quote: “This must be the greatest best kept secret in Cape Town. By far the most incredible way to watch live music… this is how music was meant to be listened to …” – Cape Times. To find out more about Studio 7 and upcoming events, follow them on: https:// www.facebook.com/Studio7Sessions http://www.studio7.org.za/ Opening act was Jeremy Douglas who surprised everyone present. Jeremy’s voice made me think of a fire being lit on a dark cold night– a small flame at first and upon stoking it becomes a bright burning flame – sparks shooting out into the air for all to see. Words like, glowing, warm, incandescent, smoky came to mind, as the combination of his voice and lyrics bring a feeling of warmth to the heart. Upon doing a little research, I discovered that Jeremy is part of White Collar Club which is a vocal collaboration of 8 men that came together from all over the world. I have since listened to some of their music on Soundcloud and love it. The mix of different genres coming together truly creates a beautiful and totally unique sound. Keep a keen eye on this young man as his light burns brightly and is sure to bring a warm glow wherever he goes. To find out more about Jeremy and White Collar Club here are the links: https://www.facebook.com/Jeremydouglasmusic https://soundcloud.com/jeremy-douglas/sets/drinking-with-the-devil-demo https://www.facebook.com/WhiteCollarClubMusic Next up was Michael Lowman who needs no introduction, as his music is play-listed on all major radio stations. To me, Michael is a man of mystery, but a little of the mystery was to be revealed tonight. Michael’s voice is as deep and wide as an ocean. My emotions were tossed to and fro, as wave upon wave swept across my heart and I’m sure every heart present. The mood and passion with which he performed touched me.

Michael shared a little about his life story; that he lost his dad at a very tender age and this impacted his life deeply, to the extent that it brought about his real and very meaningful music. Michael is a young man who has wisdom beyond his years. Michael has a good sense of humour which adds something special to the way he engages his audience. Listening to his music and watching him, I could tell how much he loves music, especially his new love of his life ‘Diane’ (his guitar-smiles). Michael sang a couple of blues’ songs and his voice brought a feeling of melancholy and sadness, which can only be felt when listening to the ‘blues’. Michael’s music has a lingering effect, like a beautiful perfume which fills a room, which you cannot help notice and your senses are awakened. Michael is a man who has taken SA by storm and I’m certain that soon he will be taking it further and beyond our borders! To find out more about Michael Lowman, follow his links: https://www.facebook.com/ michaellowmanmusic http://michaellowman.tumblr.com/ All in all a beautiful night was enjoyed by all present. If you haven’t yet had the privilege of watching these artists, best make a plan.

This album to me, speaks of relationships – love won, love lost, love as a journey – Gerald encapsulates it beautifully with his soulful voice, which brings highs and lows of emotions running wild and free. Gerald is known for his bluesy, country voice and this album brings just that. The background guitar, banjo, keyboard, vocals and drums complete the album. Black Horses – When I heard this song for the first time it sent me to another place – a place of nostalgia – a time long gone. I remember reading insanely whilst growing up. Most of the novels were romantic ones that spoke of dark villains, knights and beaus in hot pursuit of beautiful ladies. Strangely, most of them were about castles in the country surrounded by dreamy forests, mountains and rivers. There would always be a scene where horses would gallop in wild abandonment. Now this song manages to re-create that moment in my mind. Having never experienced the thrill of riding on a horse, this song makes me want to get out there, find a horse and ride it. This is the power of music. Watch it on You Tube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4Y7hZTfK3E Walking Slowly – This song speaks of having to move forward but longing for that feeling of familiar love. Gerald sings with such sincerity. It is about dreaming of the reality of that love and wanting to be back in that moment. Maybe I’m A Fool – The sheer pain of waiting for someone to love you back – this song speaks of wasted love and time. A desperation, so to speak and Gerald brings that in this song. All I Need Is Your Love – Another dreamy song about horses and love burning brightly. You get a real country feeling listening to this song. Gerald’s vocal range truly comes through in this one. I can hear a banjo playing in the background, which always sends shivers right down my spine. There She Goes – A deep song about the painful experience of seeing someone walk away – sung so convincingly, the pain is almost tangible. Gerald’s voice reaches some high notes which express his emotions. The drums playing in the background add to a more up tempo beat. Don’t Pretend – A sad song that speaks of love that is filled with pretenses. Very powerfully sung by Gerald. This song makes me think of empty and meaningless thoughts of a relationship that is dead. Middle Of The Road – This song gripped my heart from beginning to end – it speaks of feeling worthy to be loved. Gerald truly brings the message across with this one. The song has a deep spiritual connection. It Ain’t That Easy - To me, this is a love song that speaks of not wanting to take control. A complicated love that has run out is what it is about. Needing to end a relationship, but not wanting to break someone’s heart. A compassionate touch is felt. Shooting Star – This is a beautiful song about a shooting star and wanting to fly back to someone special – seeing them in your dreams and wanting the relationship to last forever. Set Me Loose – Wanting to be set free and on fire is what comes across in this song. Wanting to be ‘another man’ so to speak – having space, time running out and it being too late for love. Marry Me – A romantic song that makes my knees go weak with the romantic nuances that flow from beginning to end. Gerald sings of wanting to marry someone – being that person that completes another. A lifetime of love and commitment is portrayed. When listening to this song, I could feel the sincerity of his emotions and the deeper part of his heart is exposed. I could picture this song being played as a wedding song as it fits the picture to perfection. What a lovely end, to a beautiful collection of love songs. I think anyone can relate to this album, as we have all walked this road somewhere along the line. If you’re taking a drive, or just relaxing on your couch, this album will speak volumes to your heart and soul and maybe take you on trip of your own kind.

Review of Black Water by Gerald Clark By Rene Maritz When listening to this album I am reminded instantly of ‘the blues’. The deep, dark lyrics that speak of love, loss and of trying to pick up life once love has gone bad come through clearly. Gerald Clark has a way and means of telling the story with his voice, but not just in words but with a deep gut wrenching cry from the pit of his soul. This is what makes this album from beginning to end. Gerald spews forth emotions that take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. The combination of the message being portrayed by Gerald, together with the background instruments complete the album to perfection. It Ain’t You – This song just has such sad lyrics that you can literally feel the pain and the need to take to the bottle. Raw, gutsy and emotional are the feelings felt. The loss of a relationship and sheer desperation. A song of laying it all on the table – Gerald sings about ‘getting drunk, getting stoned’. Black Water – From beginning to end this song speaks of forbidden pleasures, but in a ‘use your imagination’ kind of way. A sensual and provocative song. The words ‘dark’, ‘black’ and ‘burning soul’ ‘come to mind. Giving Up On Love – For me, this must be a favourite – it has such a strong blues vibe and sends shivers all round. The different levels of Gerald’s vocal range move you and the deep soul wrenching words, stir you to the core. Ain’t Going To Heaven – Another bluesy song but with a catchy tune. The song brings a spiritual connotation by referring to heaven and not going there because he would have to ‘face up’. The guitar playing on this one is truly something. The darkness of heading down below is also mentioned. Breaking Down – The song is about breaking down and crying. The song has a good rhythm despite it being a bit morbid. Poor Man Blues – When listening to this song a picture is painted in my mind of a scene featuring a lounge, a piano and people gathering together from old to young to listen to some of the finest jazz music. It has a beautiful jazzy feel to it, which grabs you right from the start. Gerald still manages to bring that blues sound despite it being a jazzy tune. Let Me Tell You – A real rocker this song is! Blues and rock ‘n roll all rolled into one. A feeling of being in an old Pentecostal church is evoked from beginning to end. Just an incredible work of art. Stranger Blues – Beautiful guitar strumming in the opening makes this song. Going down to the railway station and getting a train ride, leaving the city far behind is what this song is about. A feeling of escaping one city for another. House Of The Rising Sun – this song is a take on the original by The Animals. It has a jolly sound to it despite the seriousness of the song.

Feel So Good…Can’t Keep From Crying – the song is about speaking to the Lord- about getting there someday – getting back to Him. A very up-tempo song about feeling so good that you want to cry. Late Night Blues – Purely an instrumental song which has a true blues undertone- from the style and arrangement of the song. A lovely end, to a beautiful collection of love songs. I think anyone can relate to this album, as we have all walked this road somewhere along the line. If you’re taking a drive, or just relaxing on your couch, this album will speak volumes to your heart and soul and maybe take you on trip of your own kind. As The Crow Flies – a bonus track on the CD – written and composed by Tony Joe White and produced by Theo Crouse – Gerald brings it in this one. Back-up vocals add a new dimension to the song. All in all a beautiful compilation of songs that make you ponder on the deeper meaning of life and relationship, stirring and tugging at the heartstrings from beginning to end. Interview with Maurizio Iacono (Vocals) from Kataklysm Interview by David Devo Oosthuizen With special thanks to Kataklysm, Nuclear Blast and Witchdoctor Productions

Interview with Maurizio Iacono (Vocals) from Kataklysm Interview by David Devo Oosthuizen With special thanks to Kataklysm, Nuclear Blast and Witchdoctor Productions Witchdoctor Productions in South Africa will be hosting the Montreal-based Death Metal powerhouse Kataklysm for two shows in July as part of their Killing The Elite 2014 Tour. With over 20 years in the global metal scene, Kataklysm is internationally recognised as a leader in their field. Kataklysm will also be recording a live album for the bands first appearance ever in South Africa. Behind the scenes footage will also be filmed to be included as bonus material on the bands next studio album in 2015. The band’s latest album Waiting For The End To Come was released last October on Nuclear Blast. David Devo Oosthuizen had the opportunity to speak to Maurizio Iacono (Vocals) on all the action about to unfold. What is the latest news from the Kataklysm Camp? At the moment we are in the middle of world campaign for “WAITING FOR THE END TO COME“. We have done Australia, Japan, Brazil, Europe and North America. We have some more territories to cover and of course South Africa for the first time. The album is getting great reviews and the shows have been awesome! Are you guys excited to be playing South Africa for the first time? Absolutely! I mean that is a remote place for metal in many ways. It’s so far that not many bands think about going there. The fact we were invited is already a big thing for us. After we play South Africa, we will have covered the four corners of the world. That’s quite an accomplishment by any means. We are curious of the fans down there. We are curious of the culture and we look forward to it. We are going to hit hard live, so bring a helmet! (laughs) South Africa is known for picturesque landscapes, remarkable wildlife, great weather, friendly people and outstanding beverages. Are you guys looking forward to savouring these on your SA trip and going on a Metal Safari? Oh yeah! We will be documenting this trip. We are leaving from the Masters of Rock Open Air in the Czech Republic and coming straight to South Africa. We will record the shows and also film the everyday experiences. We want to expose South Africa to the world. I think many people are curious about it. We can’t wait to taste South African culture and shake the hand s of Metalheads over there. South Africa has a great Metal Scene. Do you guys know any of our local bands? I remember a band from the old days of tape trading called Groinchurn … like Grindcore / Death Metal. That’s about it. Seems hard to get music from SA to the world, so maybe time to change that soon.

So, it has been just about 8 months since you launched Waiting for the End to Come. Have you guys been touring all this time? Any time to take a bit of a break and start looking at new material and work on new ideas yet? Well we already thinking of releasing a new album in 2015. We have a lot of ideas and working on some serious songs in between the touring. So, if we have the inspiration then of course we will put the music out as it comes. We love the videos for The American Way (Sacred Reich Cover). How did you decide to cover this particular track? We grew up on Thrash Metal. I’m a big Sacred Reich fan. The song is timeless and groovy and I think there’s a whole generation that’s missing out on classic tunes. So, we decided to cover that song; firstly because its cool to play and because the message behind it is strong and now reaches the entire world, not only America. You mention you will be filming the South African shows for a Live Album and for Bonus Material for your coming 2015 alum. That is VERY exciting. Please tell us even more all about this. Yeah! We decided that it’s such a special place to be and that fans will be curious to hear and see the footage. Nuclear Blast asked us to record a live album, so we decided it was the place to do it. We are very excited and hopefully the fans show up to show the world what South African’s Metalheads have to offer \m/ Anybody in particular you want to collaborate with in the future for new material? I would like to do a song with Phil Anselmo. He’s one of my influences and I think a great vocalist that doesn’t need to growl To be tough (laughs) He’s just a great vocalist and has a crazy attitude. You never know in life ... we’ll see. What is your favourite pastime on the tour bus? Drinking! What is currently spinning non-stop on your music device? Set list for the upcoming tour. I’m playing some Bolt Thrower, Chimaira, Fleshgod Apocalypse and Demon Hunter. And then the new Septic Flesh album, which kills! What song is your favourite to play live as a band? I’m really into playing “Like Animals” from the album and I really like “At The Edge Of The World”, the final riff and beat down is great live. What song gets the crowds going the most from your experiences on the road, and to that end what song do you anticipate will get the South African crowd going the most? Not sure which Kataklysm albums people know most, but heavy pit songs are “In Shadows & Dust”, “Crippled & Broken” and “As I Slither” We got many more to turn a pit upside down!

What is your take on the return of Vinyl as a Music Format? I think it’s cool. We actually released our album on cassette just for fun and people bought it, so we did it for nostalgic reason. Whatever way people are willing to buy the album and support the band I’m all for it. What would you say is your main influence when it comes to writing lyrics? Life and all the bullsh$t in it. I try to self medicate by writing down my thoughts. What message would you like to give to the South African audience awaiting your imminent arrival? Be prepared for total devastation and don’t miss this show! You won’t regret the experience and who knows when the next time will come!

Interview by : Duwyne Clayton

REST FOR TH

HE WICKED

Rest For the Wicked are no strangers to Fanbase Music Magazine, as this unique Christian Metal band as featured in Fanbase Music magazine before, although lots has happened with the band, we catch up with the band and find out what they have been up to of late Hey guys, welcome back to Fanbase Music Magazine, as most people know this isn’t the first time since we have featured you in the magazine, what have you been up to since we interviewed your band, any new news to tell us about? We have T-shirts, more gigs than we have had before and also a few new songs! For those readers who didn’t get to read the last interview, can you tell us a little bit about the band, what genre of music do you play and what are you about?

Can you tell us a little bit about each member of the band? Maruis Aka Mars. ex vox/vocals and cofounding member of Adorned in Ash, works in IT Armand Guitar. and back up vox/vocals, High school teacher of economics & business management, lead guitarist @ Christian Revival Church Jason Drums Works as an IT technician, gamer, drummer for 10 years Hein Bass. NOT on Facebook, another IT dude Gideon Guitar. Founding member of all of eternity, ex guitarist of Adorned in Ash, founding member of Rest for the Wicked, bodybuilding enthusiast, secret gamer and geek Who is the song writer in the band? Armand and Gideon write the main riffs, but it’s always a collective effort of the whole band to complete any song and we value each other’s input

The band started with me {Gideon} and Hein (bass) around early 2012, we were only 2 members, first called Possess thou the Furnace, changed to Rest for the Wicked. After a few lineup changes, auditions etc. We were ready and able to start a 5 piece band ready to rock the world!

Where do you get your influences from?

What genre of music would you classify your sound and what is your band about?

You must get asked this question a lot, but being a Christian band, do you get flak from the public because of your beliefs and how do you deal with it?

Metal, all types, shapes and sizes We have a mission to bring “rest” to weary souls through the good news of Jesus, and our lives as testimony to His amazing grace as well as melting your ears off, with unique and hard hitting grooves and melodies

Mortification, Stryper, Lamb of God, Gojira, Mudvayne, Fear Factory, Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine, Opeth ,Alter bridge, Living Sacrifice, Degradead and MANY more metal and non-metal bands and other genre’s

Nothing so far

Being a metal band which is often associated with “The devils music” what do you say to people who are closed minded like that and put your band down? We believe it is the spirit behind the music… any type of music can be the “devils music” in my personal opinion… People are just quick to label most metal, Christian and non-Christian alike as evil, because so many metal whether Christian or non- Christian bands for example, use shock or evil to sell their music The following verses support our views and mindsets about Christian metal and that music in general was created by God for God Psalms 98:4 “Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise” KJV Psalm 33:2,3 “Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery [and] an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skillfully with a loud noise” KJV You were recently going to be one of the support acts for Deuteronomium who was supposed to visit our shores but had to cancel/postpone due to a problem with one of the venues, were you looking forward to that gig and how do you feel about the situation now of it being postponed? Well our guitarist Armand had quite a big operation, so yes we were relieved for his sake, it also gave us some extra time to rehearse, better prepare for it and a add a few new songs What is the next step for your band, any albums or important shows coming up? We are planning a new single soon, more merchandise, Deathfest the 21st of June @ Zeplins Centurion with a bunch of well-known fellow Christian metal bands and possibly an album in the future!

How can people get hold of you, do you have any social medias? Yes we are on the following sites Facebook https://www.facebook.com/restforthewickedband Myspace https://myspace.com/restforthewickedband Reverbnation http://www.reverbnation.com/restforthewicked Check our single and a live clip @ Shivas Rock on the following links In exile clip https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=91p_AsQKpzk\ Pure filth https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=W32MmadUbyA Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last messages for your fans? Local is lekker

You got to love it when you tune into The Daily Dose with Doug Barker on Rock Hard Radio and you get to listen to awesome new music that you haven’t heard before, that is what I get to do on a daily basis which often gets me turned on to new music that I want to feature in Fanbase Music magazine. This is how I got to hear about the band called Era. Soon as I heard them, I had to get in touch with them for an interview. Enjoy!

Hi there thank you for featuring in Fanbase Music Magazine, can you tell us where did it all start for your band Era? Thank you. Well, it all started about four years ago with a few friends getting together and making music, just having some fun. After a few member changes were made and an arsenal of well written material that really showcased the musicianship on display was crafted, ERA was born. We’ve all been friends for a very long time and have played in various groups and projects together in the past. We were (and still are) all fans of one another’s musical prowess, so it only seemed fitting that when the smoke cleared, we’d arrive at our current lineup. Can you tell us a bit about each member of the band? Sure. Barry Hurlbut, 33, is our current vocalist/bassist. He’s been playing for over 10 years, and some of his influences include David Ellefson, Rex Brown, & Ken Lambert. The man behind the drums is Bryan Stock, 31. Bryan’s been manning the drums for over 20 years. Some of Bryan’s influences are Thomas Lang, Vinnie Paul, Joe Stock Sr. & Jr., Neil Peart, and Mario Duplantier. On rhythm guitar/backing vocals we have Floyd West, 40, who also has 20+ years on his instrument. Floyd cites Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pantera, and Rush as influences. And on lead guitar/backing vocals is Dave E. Riley, 30. Dave has been playing guitar for over 10 years and is heavily influenced by Randy Rhoads, Slash, Dimebag Darrell, Dave Mustaine, & Jimmy Page to name a few.

Who is the song writer in the band? All in all, it’s basically a group effort. We all pretty much contribute to the song writing process. Someone might come in with a riff or an idea, a few parts worked out here and there, whatever the case may be, and then we’ll go from there putting it together and finding the missing pieces. What genre of music would you classify your music in? Metal. If we have never been to one of your gigs, what could we expect if we were to attend one? You could expect one hell of a musical performance. We take a lot of pride in being a tight, polished, fine-tuned machine onstage and we make sure we deliver it whenever we step foot on one. We don’t try to portray a certain image. We let our music do the talking. Do you get nervous before a gig? Maybe earlier in our career when we started to play some big shows, but now we feel more at home with the bigger shows. It’s like we are partying with a ton of our friends and we just have a good time. But then again, that’s why you practice, so when you’re in those moments you’re prepared. Do you have any rituals before a gig? No, nothing too crazy. Just a little stretching and warming up. Then a few drinks and a shot or two.

What is some of your best musical influences? There are far too many to list, but some examples would be classic metal/rock bands like Megadeth, Pantera, Black Sabbath, Slayer, Led Zeppelin, to more modern bands like Mastodon, Red Fang, and Gojira, just to name a few. The music industry is very different in South Africa compared to your side of the world, can you explain a typical night out in the musical night life? A typical night out is usually just having a few drinks and hanging out with friends and fans before a show, then after we’re done killing it on stage we grab some more drinks and hang out with everyone. We always encourage our fans, or anyone for that matter, to come and talk and interact with us after a show at our merch table. We try to be as engaging as we can be. Do you have any social medias, how can people get hold of you? Yeah, our main pages are Facebook (www.facebook.com/erarockband), Twitter (www.twitter.com/ERAbrandmetal), & Reverbnation (www.reverbnation.com/erarockband), so people can get a hold of us on any one of those. We always look forward to receiving and answering fan questions on our pages. Thank you for doing this interview, do you have any last messages for your fans and our readers? No problem. And thank you for the opportunity. We’ll be releasing some new music later this year, as well as playing some killer shows over the summer, so keep your eyes and ears opened and perhaps we’ll see you soon! Thanks!

Blackdahlia's "FRAGMENTS", the title of Blackdahlia's album, is a perfect description of their music.

Each song is a chapter, a symphonic and decadent hymn, that talks us about emotions, from the darkest sadness to a glimmer of shining hope. Fragments is a strong gothic album in which the powerful and aggressive sound of Blackdahlia melts with the captivating melody of Samuela's voice together with the strongly present band's classical influences. Released by Areasonica Records, Blackdahlia's first album has eight tracks that satisfy the lovers of gothic metal and alternative fans and not only. "FRAGMENTS" rapidly got a general appreciation and a remarkable success on important trade magazines: "[…]Samuela's voice is always engaging and captivatingand her piano pieces never fail to please the ear. Ruggero Doronzo is an accomplished guitar player and the rest of the band do more than hold their end up. If Goth-Metal with female fronted vocal appeals to you as it does to me you really need to check Fragments out […]" (Rob Birtley – Firebrand Magazine – Issue 19 – 04.2014) "[...]Their taste in finest melodies can emerge in a dark and melancholy sound, that directly hits the stomach[…]" (Romano De Polo – Metal Maniac - 05.01.2014) Our press office is at your beck and call to brief you and provide you additional stuff.

Sonar has been constantly on the pulse of the current electronic music landscape and delivers experimentations with music’s newest trends, presenting fused collaborations between established artists and emerging talent. Since 2002, Sonar has hosted more than 50 festivals in all corners of the globe, all imbued with the festival’s philosophy of physical spaces and unique environments hosting a balanced mix of the best talent from the international and local music scene. Award-winning agency, Seed Experiences, will bring Sonar to South Africa on an annual basis, with the inaugural event scheduled for 16 December 2014 at the iconic Good Hope Centre in Cape Town. Cape Town’s recent accolade of World Design Capital 2014 makes it the natural city of choice for Sonar’s South African stop and, along with Barcelona, Tokyo, Reykjavik and Mexico, will make up the quintuplet of cities to host Sonar in 2014. Cape Town’s instalment will comprise an explosive mix of South Africa’s top electronic acts, headlined by one or two of the biggest international names. Ventura Barba, COO of Advanced Music, the company behind Sonar, comments, “Now part of Sonar, Cape Town joins a global music network, cementing its place in Electronic Music Culture (EMC). One of Sonar’s philosophies is to discover talent in new markets and give the artist or DJ the opportunity to perform at one of the global Sonar events. We’re looking forward to scouting South Africa’s acts and giving fresh talent the opportunity to perform at Sonar around the world.” Brian Little, managing director of Seed Experiences, explains the process behind the launch, “In order to ensure that the tour stays true to the essence of the Sonar brand, the entire Seed Experiences team travelled to Barcelona this June to gain insight into the event’s roll-out. We met with the production, marketing, sponsorship and artist liaison teams in order to launch a South African instalment that mirrors the international brand, while ensuring its relevance within the local context.”

Staying true to the design theme, Sonar Cape Town will take place at the Good Hope Centre, breathing life into the uniquely designed 1970s iconic architectural landmark and injecting it with a “cultural twist”. As Sonar is an internationally recognised festival brand that has grown solidly over more than 20 years, one can imagine its modest roots and look forward to seeing its newest host city, Cape Town, mirror the journey.
