NEW SEASON RESOLUTION We are approaching the quarter way mark through the year and so inevitably everyone gave up on their New Year’s resolutions a while back. I blame this on the inconvenient timing of New Year: the middle of winter is hardly an inspiring time to improve your lifestyle. Obviously, we cannot control when the years change but maybe, instead of at New Year, we could set resolutions in March. The nights get shorter, days longer and brighter, and we can begin anticipating the summer so what better time to, like a spring chick, begin again and set a resolution. Come out of your hibernating state, throw down that blanket, chocolate biscuit and tea (warning: throwing hot tea can cause burns to people around you) and bloom like a daffodil into a new and improved, super-organised hybrid version of yourself. Why not make the decision to read more, exercise twice a week, go to bed earlier or do the dishes? If you gave up on your New Year’s resolution use the approaching spring as an excuse to make a change and this time stick to it. Write it on a post it note and stick it on your wall to make it official. Good luck!

DON’T HOLD BACK One of the worst situations for me is when I am somewhere new and I know nobody. I suppose it‘s a fear due to the fact that I started secondary school not knowing anyone at all, with everybody else having friends from their primary school and let‘s just say it did not start well. There are so many things that I would love to do: join a gym, start yoga classes etc, but since none of my friends are willing to join me, I have resulted in never going. In all honesty, I'm not sure what this fear is because I do easily talk to anyone, but it's the humiliation of people seeing you alone, I suppose. So this year I have the opportunity to join an amazing summer camp for 4 weeks and I'm terrified. So terrified I would not go because, again, none of my friends want to join me. But I decided to make myself go and I will probably feel so ill from the feeling, but in the end I will look back and probably laugh at myself. Why am I doing this to myself? Well I just think 1. If I can't do this then what will I be like as an adult when I need to be alone? 2. If I embarrass myself, no one will remember in 5 years time and 3. I don't know anyone there so what does it matter? So if you are like me, then think positively and remember that nothing can be worse than looking back and regretting not doing something.

Oscar Predictions It’s almost that time of year again, the cherry on top of the award season cake, the Oscars. On Sunday 2nd of March the red carpet was rolled out for Hollywood’s finest and in anticipation of this, Fandoms Assemble predicted the big winners of the night. Best Supporting Actress: The Nominees

Best Supporting Actor: The Nominees

Sally Hawkins—Blue Jasmine

Barkhad Abdi—Captain Phillips

Jennifer Lawrence—American Hustle

Bradley Cooper—American Hustle

Lupita Nyong’o—12 Years a Slave

Michael Fassbender—12 Years a Slave

Julia Roberts—August: Osage County

Jared Leto—Dallas Buyers Club

June Squibb—Nebraska

Jonah Hill—The Wolf of Wall Street

Now we at FA love a bit of Jennifer Lawrence, and after winning Best Actress last year, she’s in a good position to take home another award for her scene stealing role in American Hustle. However, she faces tough competition from Lupita Nyong’o who has earned high praise this award season. It’s definitely a race between the two and a very close one at that.

There’s a lot of love out there for American Hustle but Bradley Cooper is getting none of the buzz. Jared Leto has been raking in the awards for his role in DBC, including a Golden Globe and a SAG award, which puts him in pole position for the Oscar. However, Barkhad Abdi, in his first ever acting role, took the BAFTA, so there could be a shock on the cards.

FA Prediction: Lupita Nyong’o

FA Prediction: Jared Leto

Best Actress: The Nominees

Best Actor: The Nominees

Cate Blanchett—Blue Jasmine

Christian Bale—American Hustle

Sandra Bullock—Gravity

Bruce Dern—Nebraska

Amy Adams—American Hustle

Leo DiCaprio—The Wolf of Wall Street

Judi Dench—Philomena

Chiwetel Ejiofor—12 Years a Slave

Meryl Streep—August: Osage County

Matthew McConaughey—Dallas Buyers Club

Streep has earned her record 18th nomination and Adam’s her 5th, so far, without a win, more than Mr DiCaprio. Despite the powerhouse names in this category, so far there has only been one winner: Cate Blanchett. She looks a dead cert for the Oscars, having already raked up the Golden Globe, SAG and BAFTA.

As much as we want to root for Leo, it looks like the Oscar will elude him again. Matthew McConaughey is the front runner with several awards already to his name. But Chiwetel, who won the BAFTA, is putting up a fight. Still we can’t help but think another award will be coming McConaughey’s way.

FA Prediction: Cate Blanchett

FA Prediction: Matthew McConaughey Best Picture: The Nominees

American Hustle Captain Phillips Nebraska

7

Philomena

Dallas Buyers Club 12 Years a Slave

Gravity

Her

The Wolf of Wall Street

Now for the big one. There appears to be three strong contenders: 12 Years a Slave, Gravity and American Hustle who have all won awards along the way and are all nominated for at least 9 Oscars. It’s a close call but we think 12 Years a Slave will sneak it.

FA Prediction: 12 Years a Slave

Interview with

@GoT_Tyrion @GoT_Tyrion is a Twitter account run by Erik, a Game of Thrones fan of 14 years. He talks about whom he’d like to see on the Iron Throne, the new upcoming series and the most painful character death. When did you first get into GoT? I read the first book in the year 2000. Why did you decide to dedicate a Twitter account to GoT? I like Tyrion Lannister's view of the world, and with the popularity of the show I thought it would be fun. What is it you love most about GoT? It is not the traditional fantasy series where the "Good Guys" win and the hero gets the girl. No one is safe, and as in life, your initial impression of some of the characters can change dramatically over time based on their life experiences and choices. In your opinion, which character death has been the most painful? All of the developed characters whom have been killed off have hurt in different 8ways (as was intended by GRRM), but 8

in my opinion Ned Stark is my most mourned death. (Erik originally had another death in mind but it’s a season 4 spoiler). Personally, who would you like to see on the Iron Throne and why? That is a really difficult question. Everyone wants to see Daenerys on the throne, however, as most will learn in season 4 conquering a kingdom and ruling a kingdom are two quite different animals. I truly think that Tyrion Lannister would make an exceptional ruler, he has the mind and constitution for it, although that is wishful thinking and is most likely not in his future. There was anger amongst some fans surrounding Emilia Clarke gaining an Emmy nomination ahead of Michelle Fairley; do you have a stance on this? Is there an actor you feel deserves more recognition for their role in GoT? I think that Emilia Clarke deserved the

nod, she did exceptional work, and her command of the Valyrian language was phenomenal. Michelle Fairley had an incredible season, but the relatively small amount of screen time that she had compared to Emilia probably worked against her. Sansa seems to divide opinion, some fans love her, and some hate her. What do you think of her character? She has had a rough time, however, I believe that she will become a much larger character in the future. If the series goes the way I am hoping it does, I think she will have a big following by the last book. But does the series ever go the w a y w e e x p e c t ? Do you have a favourite Tyrion one liner? Never forget what you are.

QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS: Favourite character? Tyrion Lannister Favourite episode? Baelor (it taught those introduced to the series from the show that no one is safe). Favourite cast member? Carice Van Houten Favourite house? Lannister.

Are there any fandom related events you're looking forward to? As with most fans of the books I am anxiously awaiting The Winds of Winter. Without divulging any spoilers, the last book ended on a cliff hanger. I also can't wait to see how that translates to the show. Season 4 on April 6th is pretty exciting, I like how the show deviates slightly from the books, so even if you have read the series you still don't know exactly what to expect. 9

CONFES I love Divergent but I’m not excited for the film.

It annoys me when people call Alexandra Daddario ‘the girl in Percy Jackson’. She has a name.

I think Looking For Alaska is a better book compared to The Fault In Our Stars. 16

SSIONS I thought Haylor was cute. I didn’t like Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace. He looked the part but he wasn’t sarcastic enough.

BAFTAS 2014

The 67th British A held on 16 Febru

The BAFTAs 2014: a great night celebrating the best of British film. But who to host it? None other than our national treasure, Stephen Fry, of course. He graced us with his hairy presence before beginning to name the stars who were there that night. On demand, Leonardo DiCaprio blew a kiss to the camera, sending many at home weak to the knees. Both acting royalty and real royalty were there that night, in the form of Helen Mirren and Prince William. It was then time for the first performance of the evening. Tinie Tempah and Luara Mvula performed Heroes, however the highlight of the performance was not the vocals, although they were certainly breath-taking, but Tinie and Prince Will’s high five. Clips were then played, highlighting the best films of 2013. It was then onto the first award of the night: Outstanding British Film, presented by Oprah Winfrey. This was when Gravity picked up its first award. Next was Animated Film, an award between Frozen, Monsters University and Despicable Me 2. The winner, of course, was Frozen, having so far grossed a massive $957 million across the world. The trailer for the first of the Best Film nominations began to play, with Stephen Fry somehow managing to compare it to his life. Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer went to the director/ writer Kieran Evans for Kelly + Victor. Emma Thompson presented Best Supporting Actor, going to Barkhad Abdi for Captain Phillips. Best Cinematography went to Gravity, their second award of the night, and was presented by Helen McCrory and Ray Winstone. Jennifer Lawrence won Best Supporting Actress for her part in American Hustle however, due to filming, she wasn’t available to receive the award Leo DiCaprio had presented her in person. A tribute to Peter Greenway was then shown, as he received Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema, a highly prestigious award previously won by John Hurt (2012), the Harry Potter films (2011), and Kenneth Branagh (1993). American Hustle picked up its second BAFTA of the night for Best Original Screenplay. On the other side of coin, Best Adapted Screenplay, presented by Amy Adams, went to Philomena. EE Rising Star Award, between

Academy Film Awards, more commonly known as the BAFTAs, were uary 2014 at the Royal Opera House in London, honouring the best national and foreign films of 2013. Dane DeHaan, Lupita Nyong’o, George Mackay, Will Poulter and Lea Seydoux, went to Will Poulter. Finally, one of the most anticipated awards of the night, Best Leading Actor, was presented. The nominees were: Christian Bale as Irving Rosenfeld in American Hustle; Bruce Dern as Woody Grant in Nebraska; Leonardo DiCaprio as Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street; Chowetel Ejiofor as Solomon Northup in 12 Years a Slave; Tom Hanks as Captain Richard Phillips in Captain Phillips. The winner was Chowetel Ejiofor. Best Director went to Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity. Then, Best Leading Actress was awarded. The nominees were: Amy Adams as Sydney Prosser in American Hustle; Cate Blanchett as Jeanette “Jasmine” Francis in Blue Jasmine; Sandra Bullock as Dr. Ryan Stone in Gravity; Judi Dench as Philomena Lee in Philomena; Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers in Saving Mr. Banks. Cate Blanchett picked up the award. The award that had had been building up throughout the night by Stephen Fry’s anecdotes was finally here: Best Film. The nominees were: Gravity; American Hustle; Captain Phillips; 12 Years a Slave; Philomena. It was certainly no surprise when 12 Years a Slave picked up the award. The montage in memory for those who died who had worked in the business always brings tears to people’s eyes. The names and faces which cropped up on the screen included Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Walker. Jeromy Irons and Prince William presented the Academy Fellowship, the highest honour the academy can bestow, to someone Will should really call ‘Granny’ due to the number of times she has played the Queen in numerous films and stage productions. Yes, we are talking about the one and only Helen Mirren. In previous years, the Academy Fellowship award has been presented to Alfred Hitchcock (1971), Charlie Chaplin (1976), David Attenborough (1980), Stephen Spielberg (1986), Maggie Smith (1996), Woody Allen (1997), Michael Cane (2000), Judi Dench (2001), Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders (2009), and many more. Other awards presented that night included Best Special Effects which went to Gravity. The Great Gatsby picked up their two awards with Best Production Design and Best Costume Design while Gravity also picked up two awards with Best Sound and Best Original Music. Best Makeup and Hair went to American Hustle. Best Editing went to Rush, Best Short Film went to Room 8, Best Short Animation went to Sleeping with the Fishes and Best Film Not in the English Language went to The Great Beauty.

films of march 10th March

If you are reading this then it means we are one month closer to the TFiOS film and one month closer to everything else you’re waiting for. But for now it is March. And March means something that I know a lot of people have been waiting for: Captain America! Captain America hits the screens in the UK on 28th March. Whilst this month may be a little less packed on the cinema front, with only Captain America and a Scarlett Johansson film making the cut for our calendars, March makes up for the loss with its ideal DVD releases. Ranging from Jen in Catching Fire, to Sandra Bullock in Gravity, it seems we’ll have leading ladies on our screens: Jennifer Lawrence and Scarlett Johansson. Scarlett is in Sci-Fi film Under the Skin, which is, after all the wait, hitting 28the UK on the 14th March.

30

Based on the bestselling book by Orson Scott Card! With great names like Harrison Ford and Asa Butterfield. 3rd March

Make sure you sing along to this Disney film and watch April roll in with two new princesses (and a snowman).

OUTNUMBERED

The last episode of the final series of Outnumbered was actually rather cute. Throughout every series the children were looked on as disorderly and out of control, but within this series they showed a lot of character development, such as Jake taking on an adult role trying to discipline Karen. In this episode, Sue’s sister “Auntie” Angela returned with a new young boyfriend, as she usually does, only this time she returned shocked that Karen was being nice to her. I found her reaction hilarious because she just 29 seemed so worried that Karen

could differ from her usual critical self. Ben, who is seen as the crazy violent child and always up for anything, contradicted his stereotype when he began to contemplate his role as Spartacus in the school play. Pete and Sue were pretty convinced that Ben would not go through with it but after Karen talked to him (or miraculously did something nice again) he made the performance. It was cute because usually the kids were the problem but in the very last episode they were the solution. Not to mention Karen found her missing hamster. Woohoo.

PIVOT POINT KASIE WEST It started off as a light book that you read when you needed a fluffy story to cheer you up, but it became so much more than that. An exploration into how one decision can have huge impacts on your life and the people around you, and how the people we know and spend time with will ultimately influence your perception on the world, it became a story that has a deeper, more existential meaning to it if you chose to dig a little deeper. Pivot Point is also much more of a character and relationship driven novel than anything else. I didn’t take issue with the romance being such a large31 part of the plot because the romance

complements the progression of the plot. The basic concept for Pivot Point is one of the most original and well executed concepts I’ve ever come across in young adult fiction. What really made it stand out from other books I’ve read is the supernatural element in this book, because it opened the story up for a wider range of character-types and delves into how they deal with their individual abilities.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell This is my first Rainbow Rowell, although I plan to read Eleanor and Park very shortly, and it’s fair to say that I was not let down. A City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau I can't recommend A City of Ember strongly enough. It's set in the future, post a "disaster" that rendered the planet nearly unlivable, and few people survived. But one small city still thrives in its cavern below the ground - at least it was thriving until it started to run out of it's stockpiled resources. We plot and dream alongside Lina and Doon, who though they are young, are wise and brave beyond their years. They cling to a spark of hope as they dream of a life outside of their underground city, though they have always been told that there is nothing and no one else. (Note: I would recommend skipping the third book, as it is an unnecessary prequel and seems a bit disjointed from the rest of the series.) Emma— @EmmaJen

ROMIONE VS HARMONY J.K. Rowling revealed earlier this month that she thinks Hermione actually should have ended up with Harry rather than Ron. She admits that “in some ways Hermione and Harry are a better fit”, and that “Hermione’s always there for Harry.” But she says Ron and Hermione might ’be alright with a bit of counselling’, mainly working on Ron’s self-esteem and Hermione being less critical. Here’s what you guys think about our Queen’s statement.

the Romione shipper Twitter user @Romione69, known to most as Ciara, is obviously an avid Romione shipper. When I first read the article about JK Rowling “regretting” Romione I had that “Oh no.” sick feeling in my stomach for a bit and then it was kind just like “WHY?” I mean I just didn’t understand how the author of the Harry Potter series could suddenly change her mind about the protagonist couple of the entire series. Ron and Hermione’s relationship has been hinted from the start and although she had considered Harry, she ended up deciding he and Hermione were more like siblings and advised Harmony shippers to reread. Why want it the other way round then? When the interview was finally released it was revealed that Jo hadn’t even said she regretted Ron and Hermione as pairing and wished it had been Harry and Hermione. Her words were twisted, what she said was, “Oh, maybe she and Ron will be alright with a bit of counselling, you know. I wonder what happens at wizard marriage counselling? They'll probably be fine. He needs to work on his self-esteem issues and she needs to work on being a little less critical.” Yeah she says, “In some ways Hermione and Harry are a better fit” but that was already known and pretty obvious. Hermione and Harry had that fitting friendship and loyalty but as a couple they would have lacked originality (male protagonist and female protagonist is so cliche it makes me sick) and they also would’ve lacked the bickering and sexual tension which Ron and Hermione fulfil together y’know. So like overall I’m not very annoyed about these statements I mean I was at first but the original article was out of context and had everyone in a panic and I think if the interview had just been released without the article, claiming Jo regretted Romione, then no one would have really34 made a fuss about it. But if JKR suddenly does consider shipping Harmony she needs to go back and reread, I think.

the Harmony shipper Nicole is a hard-core Harmony shipper, yet is neutral on JK’s decision. If Ron and Hermione hadn’t married each other between the timespan of nineteen-years-ago epilogue and “All Was Well”, and if Harry and Hermione had stayed just as good friends, I would have been fine with that. If Harry hadn’t noticed Ginny after all and still regarded her as Ron’s little sister to protect, it wouldn’t have bothered or impacted my opinion of the series very much at all. When J.K Rowling put the finishing touches on the masterpiece of the end of Harry Potter, it was clear she was going for a happy ever after ending for the Weasley family who had endured so much trouble and hardship through-out the series. The fact is, I would have been OK with Ron and Luna, or some other girl in his year who appreciated Ron for himself and made him into a better person in their relationship. If Harry could find another more-developed character who had a slightly more normal life-style than him and could take all his nonsense with the package of being Harry Potter, it’d be fine with me. And if Hermione dated a normal, every-day brilliant guy who appreciated the little things in life and still made her happy? She deserved it. All the of the three Gryffindors and the Weasleys deserve a break from the public eye and the adventurous life, as well as a normal life, and if they could’ve found a different person to spend the rest of their life with other than those in their inner circle of best friends, I would have been happy for all three of them: Harry, Ron, AND Hermione.

the non-potterhead Tiff knows little about Harry Potter and his world. I don't know very much about Harry Potter beyond a few movies and fan fiction, but from what I have seen, there's obviously chemistry between Harry and Hermione. As they say, the best relationships begin with friendships, but some inherent part of JKR knew they weren't destined. Hermione complements Ron far better than she does Harry, and vice versa. She makes his crass, uncouth behaviour less harsh and enlightens him, something he really needs, and at the same time he brings her out of herself. Ron is abrasive and impulsive, and Hermione helps to slow him down and make him think- an action that Harry doesn't need. Harry is level -headed and passive, albeit adventurous, so a union between Hermione and him would be stagnant. So, in the end, JKR made the right choice. Ron 35 Hermione, and Hermione needs Ron. This is just my opinion, though. needs What do you have to say? 35

My Favourite:

Jennifer Lawrence has proven this.

Age: 23 Famous for: Acting

Appeared in:

X-men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past as Raven Darkholme/Mystique, The Hunger Games, Catching Fire and Mockingjay as Katniss Everdeen, Silver Linings Playbook as Tiffany Maxwell, American Hustle as Rosalyn Rosenfeld. There are countless reasons why Jennifer inspires me daily. She doesn’t care about the “social norms” like body weight or the “perfect” body. In my opinion, Jennifer Lawrence is the only person in Hollywood who looks healthy! Even in her interviews, she asks for food! I think it’s very brave of her to be this open about a topic that isn’t brought up that much in the industry itself.36 In many of her interviews, she has said that she will never starve herself for a role and she

Lawrence appreciates her fans and her family more than anyone. She is always flabbergasted by how many people admire her and love her. She is blunt and honest about how she feels. She is always overwhelmed by the support she receives.

"I'm never going to starve myself for a part. I don't want little girls to be like, 'Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I'm going to skip dinner!' [...]I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong, not thin and underfed." – Entertainment Weekly. For example, during the “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” Many people knew her after premiere in London, she saw the popular book-to-screen an emotional fan and went adaptation of “The Hunger over to her. She talked to the Games” and I was one of fifteen-year-old and hugged those people, but I was really her. Not many celebs will do fascinated by her acting so I what Jennifer did or even googled her and watched interact with their fans. In my every movie she was in. My OTP:

Sybil & Tom

Sybil and Tom. The lady and the chauffeur. One of my all time favourite couples... but why? Well firstly, I'm a huge romantic, and a sucker for a cliches and this is a girl-marrying-beneathher story. Unfortunately for my tear ducts I'm also a lover of "tragic" love stories, which sadly their story becomes. Straight away when I watched Downton Abbey I loved Sybil. She was my favourite character, so it was probably inevitable that I would love her partner. But then Tom arrived and I loved him not just because I knew he was so well suited to Sybil, but also for his own personality: his boldness (especially with Sybil) and his charm (maybe that was the Irish thing...)

Another reason is simply their love for each other. There is a sort of risk to their relationship, which Tom is well aware of, due to warnings from Mrs Hughes, but he's sure enough about Sybil that he's willing to risk losing his job, that he still goes for it. And Sybil is willing to walk away from her family's money, her name and status, to be with Tom. Tom wasn't just a phase or a want for adventure like in novels, and both of their determination and willingness to lead a different life shows their true love for each other and that it's the 'real thing'. There are so many little things in scenes with these two that I just love. The protests. Tom takes her, he stays with her and, when they turn violent and Sybil is hurt, Tom is there straight away. He carries her to safety and all the while tries to help keep her attendance of the protests secret to prevent her arguing with her family. This could get him in big trouble with Robert - and when Robert does find out, he is angry - but he doesn't really care about that: his main concern is Sybil's safety.

I love these two together for so many reasons... Mainly it's how they're so well matched for each other; they're both very political, opinionated, and both want a different world, which the others around them do not share. So they were drawn to each other. And Tom encouraged her politics and her want to have a job, while her family disapproved. He was her "ticket" as she says, to be the kind of person she wanted to be. The garage scene. Oh god. My If you wish to discuss your one absolute favourite. The agreement true pairing here, then simply to run away, and their first kiss. contact Sybil was afraid of agreeing, but 37us at fandomsassemblemagazine@g deep down she knew he was what mail.com she wanted, and it took her a little

Fandom: Downton Abbey

Relationship: Married.

Canon: Yes longer than him to realise - and when she did, he was so happy. These two together had the most passionate kisses, the sweetest scenes.. (even if there were few and were quite short.. *grumble grumble*) it's hard not to love them. Even now with Sybil gone, it's just so clear that Tom still loves her. Sometimes it's said outright, like in conversations with Mrs Hughes (bless that woman) and in simple things. Without his love for Sybil, and the growing love for her family, I think Tom would have left Downton long ago. He would happily have taken his daughter back to Ireland or away somewhere else. But he still remains to keep Sybil's wishes, even when it's been quite a while since her passing. I love that Tom still loves her, and I don't think he'll ever really stop.

BRIT AWARDS 2014

19th February marked the 2014 BRIT awards. Performances throughout the evening included Artic Monkeys, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Lorde, Ellie Goulding and Bastille. The British Male Solo Artist went to David Bowie, with Kate Moss picking it up for him and the International Male Solo Artist went to Bruno Mars. The British Female Solo Artist went to Ellie Goulding and the International Female Solo Artist went to Lorde. British Group went to Arctic Monkeys and International Group went to Daft Punk. Bastille picked up their first BRIT award, winning British Breakthrough Act. MasterCard British Album of the Year presented by Emeli Sande was Artic Monkeys’ second award of the night. The Critics Choice award, between Ella Eyre, Sam Smith and Chloe Howl, went to Sam Smith. British Single of the Year went to Rudimental featuring Ella Eyre with “Waiting All Night”, with Bastille just missing out on their second BRIT award. British Producer of the Year went to Flood and Alan Moulder. It was a close between them and Ethan Johns and Paul Epworth. One Direction picked up two awards that night. They won British Video, 40 presented by Jimmy Carr, for “Best Song Ever” and BRITs Global Success. All in all, it was a successful night.

Drowners at Rough Trade, London 22nd February 2014 “This is the best looking crowd I’ve seen on tour,” Jack Ridley says as he scans the Rough Trade East store full of what appeared to be iPhone clutching, denim jacket wearing teenage girls. Drowners’ self-titled debut album had only been released a few weeks prior to the show, but the band has been hyped up all across trendy publications and blogs everywhere, with the energy and jangly riffs of their songs being compared to the Strokes and the Smiths. Drowners received a great reception when getting up on stage. They started their set with ‘Ways to Phrase a Rejection’, which admittedly, did not make a huge impact on the crowd. However, you could still hear little squeals of excitement every time Matt Hitt smiled or Jack Ridley held up his guitar a bit higher, which definitely got everyone moving more and caring less about what they look like while dancing. ‘Luv Hold Me Down’ and ‘Unzip You Harrington’ were particularly enjoyable, as everyone knew the words to these songs and the youthful and flirtatious vibe that their music gives off soon filled the room, creating a really intimate atmosphere. Their energy was undeniable. I loved how every member, Matt, Jack, Erik and Lakis had moments that brought excitement to the crowd. With all but one of their songs being sub-three minutes long, the show was over very quickly. To say I was disappointed when it ended is an understatement. Needless to say, the whole performance was a tightly packed ball of positive energy, and I could not have asked for more. One thing that is amazing about Rough Trade Instores is that you are almost guaranteed to meet the band/artist afterwards, which was a total bonus for me. Matt Hitt had his section just by the stage, with a huge and completely unorganised queue full of slightly breathless teenage girls around him. I don’t know how many fans he met, or how many selfies he was asked to take with them, but he talked to every fan that wanted to meet him and signed their CDs and vinyls. Although forgotten by many, Jack Ridley and Erik Lee Snyder also had their own corner with a much shorter queue, and just like Matt, they were lovely to talk to and were very chilled about the whole situation. I would definitely recommend going to a Rough Trade Instore show if you live in London. The staff are great and friendly and it is a perfect venue to provide that intimacy between the band and the audience that everyone 41 complains is missing nowadays. You 37 will not regret it.
