PARADOXICAL GREEN Lawn is a visual substitute for soil and mud in an urban environment. It is an all-purpose hatching in urban designer’s / planner’s large-scale master plan drawings. But most, if not all, claim “Keep Off!” in reality, and none belong to the domain of public activities. Lawn is benign, salubrious, and controlled. It beats horror, squalidity and uncertainty. Lawn represents social commonweal. It is a strategic battlefield between democracy and power- occupying and covering surfaces with a most democratic method. Lawn is a visual reminder of natural environment in an urban context; however, it is anything but natural. It is an engineered product subjected to the rule of industrial reproduction and genetic engineering. It is produced in patches, cut into uniform squares, transported by trucks, and installed by human labors. Lawn is the most economical and efficient veil in creating a prepossessing urban image. It consumes the least material substance, but covers the largest surface area within the shortest time period. Evidence can be found from Pearl River Delta to Beijing during the Olympic Games.
FLOATING GREEN “Floating Green” is a public artwork rethinking this condition. The flat lawn layer is detached from the ground it covers, and folded to create inhabitable urban furniture out of a flat visual icon for urbanization. Its plastic feature invites people to touch, smell, occupy and sense it. The delicate bouncy structure oscillates with joviality when people sitting on it talks, moves and laughs. It is no longer a forbidding symbol of urbanity, but turns to an emotional and sensitive participant in urban life. While an architectural artifact usually seeks singularity and monumentality, a city embraces density and multiplicity. “Floating Green” rejects to be a symbol or a sculpture; instead, it dedicates to create an interactive urban field. The availability and low cost of the material provides the work with the opportunity of mass distribution. “Floating Green” therefore shifts from a particular visual image to a generative system with the potential to produce varied individual pieces and combinations. Some generated urban furniture pieces scatter across the existing green areas in Shanghai Pudong Zhangjiang Hi-tech Park, contributing to a high quality public space with both aesthetic experience and urban function.

The Chinese garden is a spontaneous density field, in which formal elements and formless elements are juxtaposed to render a synthetic spatial sensation. This spatial installation captures this condition through the formation of a synthetic space that reverse the logic of formal and formless elements: water as formless element is materialized through the repetition of its texture, while pebble as a formal element is subtracted from the materialized water field to be an absent figure. This dichotomy captures the moment, where formal element resting in a formless environment. It also creates an authentic spatial essence for “resting”.

Xintiandi is a large scale urban development to re-activate the industrial heritage on the outskirt of Hangzhou. The masterplan is designed by RTKL from USA. Nicholas Grimshaw Architects and Seire Architects from UK designed the major two mixed-use buildings. This project is the business center building that accommodates the developer of the whole area with programs of office, meeting, and hosting events. This project is a superposition of a flexible spatial framework and an artificial landscape. The public program and office program are arranged alternately to enhance the accessibility between working, recreating, communication and other activities. The shift of different levels creates a more subtle layer change that encourage people to walk up and down and enjoy the slow working and life style. Through the interval between public space and working space, the whole building is a continuous loop. The core of the working space is an organic shape atrium, which brings wind, light and other natural elements back to the building to create a ambient working environment. The spatial tention split the building horizontally on the second floor. The floor plate is distorted to connect the ground floor, which receives the city life into the building. The second floor is a flexible event space. It is a special space that receives all the spatial tensions from the artificial landscape. It also connects with the three floor open terrace.

The tension of the space splits the building into two parts. The split becomes a public space that absorbs social life and urban activity into the building.
Event space connects with the courtyard. The activity extents from inside to outside. The wave creates a unique spatial quality for the event space.
Exhibitions and activities happen at this space. It is the convergence of vibrancy and social functioning

Pulse Tower, locates 200 meter west of the Old Xi’An city wall, is a hybrid building mixing residential, leisure and commercial programs.
Xi’An is one of the oldest cities in China. However, other than the static cultural and historic monuments, it has been infiltrated, eroded, and immerged by the contemporary flux of people, building, and traffic. Instead of building a traditional looking tower to fake old and respectful attitude, we prefer to fuse the old with new flux in order to find the balance between dynamic and static.
Pulse Tower captures the vibrancy of an old city, projecting the traditional nine-square layout to the vertical skin. Every square jumps back and forth to be customized balcony, like a city with various pulses. The skin also looks like the old fabric of brick city wall. With the rapid augment of land price and the customers’ preference of big size and privacy, one spends a large amount of expenses on closed and banal residential spaces without too much life quality. Why not bringing individuality back to life? Why not bringing publicity and community back to life? Why not bringing joyful and playful back to living? We designed customized balcony for each unit, it might inspire people to engage in life with different ways. The lobby, elevated to third floor, is a public living room. The three atriums penetrate into the residential floors to encourage a slow life within the building. The promenade path connects atriums with leisure programs of gymnasium, swimming pool, spa, garden, and club house.

53 The Urban Fabric Quality of Skyscraper Although skyscraper is a unique spectacle for an urban context, skyscraper does not represent urban life. Skyscraper always appears as a monumental object, the monolithic vertical volume of which accumulates power, which is conflict with the horizotal urban fabric of democracy and equality. Skyscraper severs the urban fabric and ultimately destorys the urbanity. Shenzhen grows into a metropolitan in a short period of time, which is more an imagery urban transformation rather than urban life quality. Responding to this issue, juxtoposing a vertical tower with a horizontal urban block of skirtbuilding leaves the tower’s footprint to urban public space, which creates continuous pedestrian streets along different blocks. Skyscraper extends upwards its urban functioning as a landmark, and melts downwards – onto the city surface - into the urban fabric, encouraging the connectivity of urban life.
clear vernacular features that provides a more hygienic and better inhabitable, controlled environment. Shenzhen locates on the south, humid and hot. We create an ecological atrium space going through the building section, which brings in sunlight, natural air ventilation to form a better nature for the working space. This eco-atrium is a buffer between interior and exterior environment that is consistent to the local climate, geographic features, and life style. Both qualities creates a new skyscraper typology for this specific program and context.
The Vernacularity of Ecological Skyscraper Skyscraper is a strong physical intervention into the given environment. We hope this intervention is sustainable and responds to the vernacular condition of natural and cultural differences. In so doing, the skyscraper becomes an ecological tower with This is an invited competition. Participants included Coop Himmeblau, Hans Hollein Architects, MVRDV, Morphosis and Steven Holl Architects. The jury was chaired by Arata Isozaki. I collaborate with Yung Ho Chang / Atelier FCJZ in this project. We won the first prize for the Tower A, the largest tower among the four, which is a media masion.

Direction of Towers
Every towers has its particular direction due to its placement in the city. A tower facing wide area of landscape has a good view and a bigger chance to be viewed as well.

Different and rich space inside, like the atrium
The same rectangular volume creates a good relationship between the tower and the city, while similar facade design not only coordinates the four towers but also keep their uniqueness. Design of atrium make it possible to get better ventilation and lighting. It also gives more disparity between the rectangular volume of towers.
