The AIA|DC Emerging Architects Committee (EAC) promotes education, leadership development, and community involvement among intern architects, Associate AIA members, and architects who are licensed ten years or less. We encourage the next generation of architects to start leading our community by heading committees, organizing events, participating in workshops, or simply by attending our events. The committee has four major objectives: PROVOKE and talk about the future of the profession, ADVOCATE for emerging architects, OUTREACH to other AIA members, associated disciplines, and the community, and MENTOR the next generation of architects. Check out the AIA|DC calendar for upcoming programs.

OUTREACH advisor Deane Madsen, Assoc. AIA, LEED Green Assoc. Outreach Advisor. ARCHITECT Magazine Deane grew up in Boston, where for a particularly memorable birthday, he watched the implosion of the Travelers Insurance Building. His fascination with buildings continued from his early years of Lego city planning through later forays into amateur architectural photography. He completed an M.Arch. I program at UCLA under the tutelage of Neil Denari, Sylvia Lavin, Richard Weinstein, Dana Cuff, and others, learning along the way that imploding buildings, while always entertaining, isn’t the only way to make an impact in the world of architecture. OUTREACH advisor Elizabeth Kinkel, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP BD+C. Outreach Advisor. Mid- Atlantic Regional Sales Mgr, GRAPHISOFT Elizabeth Kinkel, a graduate of Virginia Tech’s CAUS (College of Architecture and Urban Studies), has spent her professional career exploring the architectural and sales professions seeking to bridge knowledge and understanding between these two industries. As both an architectural practitioner at Dorsky Hodgson Parrish Yue and Wnuk Spurlock Architecture in DC as well as a sales manager for Vineyard Vines, a rapidly growing retailer, Elizabeth realized a strong desire to bring business success and understanding to the small architectural firm. It is with this passion that Elizabeth joined the GRAPHISOFT team as their MidAtlantic Regional Sales Manager. She believes every day is an exploration, an opportunity to learn, and a chance to promote “Good Life.” As part of her exploration, Elizabeth pursues her own architectural projects, designing the interiors to the DC Alpha Chapter house of Pi Beta Phi, executing BIM models for various homes in Fairfax County, and resolving building vibration issues at Crossfit affiliates. In addition to these accomplishments, Elizabeth is an active member of the AIA|DC Emerging Architecture Committee, serving for the past seven years as a leader of various projects; served as VP of event planning for her sorority alum club, Pi Beta Phi; and is founder and manager of a youth girls lacrosse program, Potomac Power, where she also coaches. The Emerging Architects Committee (EAC) promotes education, leadership development, and community involvement among intern architects, Associate AIA members, and architects licensed 10 years or less.
