MEAL 1

A RESEARCH PROJECT MADE BY FANNY WACKLIN NILSSON

18-20 million tonnes of food is yearly thrown away in the UK

2

50-60% Food industry Comes from UK’s food industry. My initial idea was to target this group, but after having researched some more I realised that there are already a lot of companies and organisations working with this issue.

50%

comes from private households

Cost: ÂŁ480 a year/ household Is a campaign initiated by Wrap UK and it is targeted towards private households and how these can reduce their waste. Besides having national offline campaigns they have an informal website where you can find out about how much food that is wasted and how you can use your waste better.

3

What is all this waste? fruit & veg 26%

drinks 16%

bakery 13%

dairy 10%

meat 6%

4

meals 12%

Around 60% of this is avoidable waste Source: Love Food Hate Waste

What can we do to reduce it?

5

sharing, exchanging & socialising This is rubbish has organised a series of food feasts to make people aware of the large amounts of food that the industry is wasting. They have received great feedback from people involved.

Collaborative consumption What’s mine is yours. When you no longer need something pass it on to someone who wants it. A way of exchanging things without any financial transactions.

Initial idea

6

Exchange ingredients/ products your don’t want any longer or can use up

Directed towards students, online network/community or exchange possibility at campus

?

would that really work?

Would rather go out and buy food than going next door to ask for a certain ingredient. Don’t have the time to go online and ask people for a cup of sugar, doesn’t want to go online.

Refinement Start social gatherings where people bring along a filling/ topping/ingredient for a specific meal. Where the meal is held a base will be provided as well as cooking facilities. It is an easy way to socialise & good to do when not having much left in the fridge.

Positive outlook Have a positive attitude towards the problem with food waste. You meet to share ideas, knowledge etc. It is also a way to socialise more within your community. Get to know your neighbours for example.

Talking to people Goska, works at St Werburghs Community Centre, Bristol It sounds like a good idea but unfortunately we are no longer in the 70’s people don’t just come to the community centre unless going to a class or workshop. You would probably have to reach out to people through community events, such as food markets. Do promotions there, for example by giving our free samples made with leftover food. It is a good platform to meet people that are interested in those issues. There is a local food market on Fridays nearby our centre, closer to Ikea.

Feedback on my idea of a communual meeting point where people bring along ingredients and cook it together. “It is a really good idea but legislations will probably make it tricky to do. You need food handling certificates and such.”

Bristol City Council Reference number: 269360 We will deal with your request. The rules are different depending on if the kitchen you cook in is checked by the council or not and if you sell the food or not. As you won’t be selling food the rules are not as strict when it comes to having specific legal documents.

John Kellas I really like the idea of a meal and discussion. There is a chance that it could happen in the space above Beatroot cafe, but it would have to be a private event as the cafe does not have a proper food licence at the moment. And we would need to source another gas/ electricity hob for people to cook on. But perhaps we could always find someone’s home to host the event in. The online community ‘Just for the love of it’ could be a good way to invite people, and/ or find a host home.

But as I think about it, the space in Beatroot could be perfect for an underground dinner party discussion group. The Britol Uni sustainability team are holding their weekly meetings at Beatroot, and I am sure they would be up for your suggestion.

Spoonfed

Spoon Fed is a simple soup supper + independent microfunding scheme for creative projects. Artists, writers, performers, filmmakers, musicians et al. submit proposals to be considered for funding. These will be available to view on our website in advance. At the event, all attendees are asked to donate a minimum of £5 (cash on the door), which goes into a prize pot. In return you’ll share a simple soup meal and receive one vote to determine who wins the sum of the donations.

Tosti Treffer

The Tosti Treffer is a monthly event where creatives have the opportunity to meet each other in a relaxed way, whilst enjoying a sandwich and a drink. Every first Wednesday of the month they visit a location in Rotterdam, with an art or cultural connection. Anyone is welcome to join the event. You are encouraged to bring along fillings for your toastie meanwhile the organisers provide the bread and some basic fillings as well as toasters. Besides having the opportunity of visiting a cultural institution/gallery live music is played.

Food for Thought

Earlier this year, a group of students from our graphic design class, including myself decided to arrange a dinner with other creative minded people. The idea is to talk about ideas and current projects as well as collaborative projects that can happen in the future. Everyone brings a dish together with a piece of work that the person wants to discuss. It can hopefully lead to a lot of good discussions and collaborative work in the future.

Trying out the idea, I invited neighbours on my street to come round for dinner one night to discuss food and the issues that are related to it. It was a great success, three people showed up and they were excited about the idea and positive about taking it further. 10

During the dinner several topics were covered. As we all had quite different backgrounds it lead to some really interesting discussions. One of the participants is a French exchange student who feels like she is lacking confidence in the kitchen meanwhile another one used to work as a chef. We discussed where we do our shopping, giving each other advices on good shops and markets. A good and inspiring advice that I was given was to collect people’s recipes. A woman called Alex has kept a book for over 12 years now,; she bought a simple A5 notebook in which people have written their favourite recipes. It has now turned into one of her most precious possessions. “It would be the first thing, besides the people I live with, that I would rescue in case of a fire.”

Website Besides being able to able to read about previous dinners/ meals held you will also be able to submit photographs and experiences yourself. Under the recipe tab, people will be able to upload their favourite recipes as well ones that are especially useful when you’re fridge is looking empty or when using up leftovers. The material on this page are things that will be accessible to download so that anyone, no matter where you organise this event can, if they want to, use these invitation cards and “topic cards”. The idea of the website is to be an online platform and forum for people to share ideas and experiences, even though you might not yet have met.
