Hoje, o Fantasporto é um dos 3 mais importantes festivais de cinema fantástico e está entre os 60 festivais generalistas mais relevantes, a nível mundial. Foi de Mèliès a Renoir, dos grandes do expressionismo alemão a Cocteau até ao cinema dos anos 60 e 70, trazendo as origens do cinema aos espectadores do Fantasporto. Trouxe ao Porto nomes que ganharam Óscares de Melhor Filme como Guillermo del Toro ou Danny Boyle. Descobriu quase todos os nomes reconhecidos no cinema de hoje. E gente que venceu prémios maiores nos festivais de Cannes e Veneza. Teve, submetendo-se à competição, dos maiores nomes do cinema actual, como Spielberg de que fez também a única retrospectiva de que há conhecimento. Fez também a única retrospectiva autorizada de Walt Disney. - 12

Editou livros sobre estas retrospectivas, entre muitos outros. Trouxe para o Porto os primeiros filmes de realizadores como James Cameron, David Lynch, Peter Jackson, Pedro Almodovar, Peter Greenaway, os irmãos Wachovski, Lars von Trier, Kathryn Bigelow, Danny Boyle, Anthony Minghella, Barry Sonnenfeld, Joel Cohen, Peter Greenaway, Nick Park, Baz Luhrman, Luc Besson, David Fincher, Alejandro Iñarritu, Michael Hanecke, Jaume Balagueró, Dennis Villeneuve ou Darren Aronofsky. Ou ainda Vincenzo Natali que venceu o Festival por duas vezes. Celebrou aniversários de filmes-culto clássicos, honrado a sua forma original, como “E Tudo o Vento Levou”, “O Feiticeiro de Oz” ou “The Red Shoes”, apresentando-os como foram criados, em grande ecrã.

Hoje em dia, qualquer filme que seja convidado, vê os seus produtores aceitar o convite, muitas vezes em antestreia Mundial ou Europeia, porque todos querem vir e sentir este festival de culto. A qualidade, o profissionalismo e a simpatia quase “obrigam” os realizadores e respectivas equipas a virem ao Porto, e de todo o mundo. Para esta 40ª edição tivemos filmes de 68 países para selecionar o programa que vamos apresentar. E, com muito orgulho, aqui fica a lista desses países, para se poder ver até onde vai o nome do festival. África do Sul, Alemanha, Argentina, Austria, Austrália, Bangladesh, Bélgica, Bielorússia, Bolívia, Bulgária, Brasil, Canadá, Cazaquistão, Chile, China, Chipre, Colômbia, Coreia do Sul, Croácia, Cuba, Curdistão, Dinamarca, Eslovénia, Espanha, Estados Unidos da América, Egipto, Equador, Eslováquia, Estónia, Filipinas, Finlândia, França, Georgia, Grécia, Hong Kong, Holanda, Hungria, India, Indonésia, Irão, Iraque, Irlanda, Israel, Itália, Japão, Líbano, Macedónia, México, Nova Zelândia, Polónia, Portugal, Quénia, Reino Unido, Roménia, Rússia, Sérvia, Singapura, Suécia, Suiça, Tailândia, Taiwan, República do Tajiquistão, Tunísia, Turquia, Ucrânia, Uganda, Uruguai, Uzbequistão, Venezuela. E como a selecção final tinha, obrigatoriamente, de ser muito restrita, destes ficaram apenas 37 países no programa final. O Fantasporto tem tido um papel relevante na promoção do Cinema Português. Influenciou o gosto de gerações e mostrou-lhe o cinema que foi feito antes de nascerem. Tem trabalhado regularmente com centenas de alunos de quase uma dezena de universidades e escolas de cinema, e incentivou as suas carreiras futuras, pondo os seus alunos em contacto livre com os seus convidados e conferencistas. Muito para além do Cinema que apresenta, o Fantasporto promoveu conferências, debates, workshops, produziu filmes, aconselhou e reviu montagens de filmes novos. Organizou as Conferências do Futuro, promoveu a Arquitectura e as Artes (as Artes Plásticas, a Música, a Literatura, a Dança). Trouxe a Ciência (a Robótica, por exemplo, os Hologramas). Trouxe os Desafios da Modernidade e a Ética como temas principais de edições recentes sendo que este ano, vai abordar os “Grandes Temas, Grande Cinema”. Tem sido um impulsionador,

desde o início, do Turismo da cidade, muitos anos antes do Porto ser considerado um destino turístico de qualidade. Nesta edição de 2020, vão chegar-nos convidados da Coreia do Sul, Filipinas, Japão, China, Rússia, Iraque, Estados Unidos e Canadá, de toda a América do Sul e, obviamente, da Europa. O Fantasporto é um nome conhecido em todo o país, como sempre tivemos ocasião de verificar. Amado, mesmo, pelos seus fãs. É querido na cidade pelos seus habitantes como um evento que tem de voltar todos os anos, e cujo prestígio é usado para falar do Porto internacionalmente. O Fantasporto sobrevive. Enfrentando ainda as lutas que se lhe deparam. Contando sempre com os seus espectadores, o alicerce mais fiel do festival. Os agentes culturais de Portugal, sobretudo os do Norte, são estruturas independentes feitas com amor, que mirrarão eventualmente, entregues à sua sorte. Com o Porto em perda constante de influência, com a comunicação social sediada em Lisboa, há enorme dificuldade em afirmar a Cultura no que ela é - a representação e a expressão maior de um Povo, da sua Alma, Sensibilidade e Criatividade. O Fantasporto, felizmente, já foi reconhecido oficialmente. Tem a Medalha de Mérito Cultural do Estado Português desde 2005 e a Medalha de Ouro da Cidade do Porto, desde 1996. Nascemos no Porto e, como portuenses, lutamos enquanto pudermos. E 40 anos mostram para mostrar que somos resilientes. Por isso, aqui estamos, nesta celebração de uma data a que poucos conseguem chegar, falando em nome dos que não têm a nossa voz, continuando com um projecto pioneiro e de sucesso, reconhecido no Mundo inteiro - algo muito importante - e que nos dá energia e perspectivas de futuro. Obrigada a todos os que nos ajudaram. Porque, agora, temos orgulho em dizer. Viva o 40º Fantasporto!

Esta história de um policial (“blade runner”) que tem como missão capturar e matar “replicantes”, máquinas que dificilmente de distinguem dos humanos, que se tinham apoderado de uma nave e voltado à terra para encontrar o seu criador, tem ressonâncias shakespereanas, e deu a Harrison Ford no protagonista, mas sobretudo a Rutger Hauer que faz de replicante com uma das mortes em filme mais impressionantes do cinema, papéis de indiscutível repercussão. Também na memória dos que viram o filme a extraordinária sequência inicial criada por Douglas Trumbull, sobre a cidade com fumo, chuvosa e densamente povoada por gente de todas as cores e que fala todas as línguas.

Apesar da recepcão fria ao filme, que não foi muito generosa por parte da “Variety”, por exemplo, foi nomeado para dois Óscares, direcção artística e efeitos visuais, o que demonstra a desconfiança na altura quanto aos filmes fantásticos. Mas é um facto que “Blade Runner” se impôs ao longo de três décadas como um filme-charneira sobre o nosso futuro, tendo sido finalmente concretizada uma muito esperada (e bem recebida) sequela, “Blade Runner 2049”, em 2017, realizada por Denis Villeneuve, o realizador canadiano de “Arrival”. “Blade Runner” fez a sua Antestreia no Fantasporto 1983, na 3ª edição. O festival fez também a Antestreia Europeia da versão “Blade Runner: Director’s Cut” em 1993.

Ridley Scott One of the most visionary films in Cinema History, “Blade Runner” gave Ridley Scott a place among the greatest in the fantasy genre.

This story about a policeman/blade runner whose mission is to capture and kill a few replicants, machines that are hardly distinctive from humans, after they stole a spaceship, having returned to Earth to meet their maker, has a Shakespearean scope, and gave Harrison Ford in the leading role and especially Dutch actor Rutger Hauer who plays one of the replicants and whose death is one of the most impressive seen on a feature film, two high profile roles. Also in the memory of those who saw the film is the impressive initial sequence overview of the city, created by master Douglas Trumbull, a city filled with smoke, rain and densely populated with all kind of languages and races. Although the first reception was not very generous from film reviewers from “Variety”, for example, the fact is that the film gained impact over three decades as one of the key visions of our future. It was nominated only for two Oscars, best art direction - set decoration and best visual effects, which shows the little appreciation by the Academy of genre films at the time. A most waited for, and better welcomed, sequel came with “Blade Runner 2049” in 2017, directed by “Arrival”’s director, the Canadian Denis Villeneuve.

O filme baseia-se no grande clássico da literatura, “Dracula” escrito por Bram Stoker em 1897, que se converteu em fonte de inspiração para mais de uma centena de filmes, como o de Murnau, e cuja personagem principal tem atraído ao longo do tempo dezenas de realizadores.

Também Coppola, um dos mestres do cinema, não escapou, construindo uma sumptuosa versão da vida do vampiro aristocrata e dando um papel inesquecível ao versátil Gary Oldman, vencedor de um Óscar por “The Darkest Hour” em 2018.

Admirador convicto do realizador japonês, Akira Kurosawa, Francis Ford Coppola teve sempre uma ideia de grandeza, de beleza e magia em todos os filmes que realizou ou escreveu. Sempre “bigger than life” nos seus melhores momentos cinematográficos, Coppola constrói uma versão refinada da personagem clássica, o Conde Dracula, que na altura já tinha vários exemplos de sucesso no cinema, nomeadamente os de Tod Browning ou Terence Fisher, este com um carismático Christopher Lee no papel principal. Apesar disso, o realizador americano realiza, bem à sua maneira, um indiscutível épico do terror a partir do livro de Bram Stoker, e com ele ganhou apenas 3 Óscares (Guarda-roupa, Efeitos Visuais e Efeitos de som, Melhor Maquilhagem), numa época em que os filmes fantásticos eram desdenhados pela Academia. Além de um trabalho

fabuloso de Gary Oldman, temos ainda Keanu Reeves, longe ainda das proezas de “Matrix” e Anthony Hopkins que mais tarde seria também cunhado com o horror como protagonista de “O Segredo dos Inocentes”. A versão original do filme tinha 155 minutos, com cenas que posteriormente foram censuradas pela Fox, por sexo e nudez. O Fantasporto orgulha-se de ter apresentado este filme de Coppola em Antestreia portuguesa em 1993, numa sessão-surpresa, quase não anunciada e super-reservada, segundo o desejo do distribuidor, uma prenda para os seus espectadores, já que era, na altura, o mais esperado nos écrans portugueses, depois da estreia nos Estados Unidos em Novembro de 1992 e do renome entretanto adquirido.

Apart from the magnificent role played by Gary Oldman, the film also counts with Keanu Reeves, long before his Matrix fame, and Anthony Hopkins who later also would be connected with terror for his role in “Silence of the Lambs”. The original version by Coppola had 155 minutes with scenes that later were cut by Fox for nudity and sex.

Fantasporto is proud to have presented the Portuguese Premiere in 1993, in a last minute, barely announced and super reserved screening, per wish of the distributor, a gift to its audience since it was the most waited film at that moment, after its premiere in November 1992 in the States and having acquired since then a significant buzz.

Francis Ford Coppola

Nasceu em 1939, em Detroit, EUA, filho de uma família de ascendência italiana e na qual vários membros se salientaram já no cinema e na música. Foi assistente de Roger Corman, e a sua primeira longa-metragem foi “Dementia 13” (1963). Por “Patton” (1970) ganhou o primeiro Óscar de Argumento Original, seguindo-se “THX 1138” (1971), foi produtor de “American Graffiti” de George Lucas, e celebrizou-se definitivamente com os três filmes da trilogia “The Godfather”, tendo com o primeiro e o segundo os Óscares de Melhor Filme e 7 nomeações pelo terceiro. “Apocalypse Now” (1979) tornou-se também um marco na história do Cinema. Numa das mais bem sucedidas carreiras, sobretudo como argumentista, produtor e realizador, recentemente tem-se dedicado com produtor e realizador ao projecto “Megalopolis”, sendo o seu último filme já de 2016, “Distant Vision”. In one of the most successful careers, mostly as writer, director and producer, recently he has dedicated his time to the project “Megalopolis”, his latest feature being “Distant Vision” in 2016. The true story of a famous boxer, Jake La Motta, by the hand of one of the greatest directors alive, Martin Scorsese. With Robert de Niro in a role that made him gain 30 kilos, he guaranteed his status as one of the best actors in cinema.

About “Raging Bull”, Scorsese admits he did not want to make the film but Robert de Niro convinced him. Says the director, “I know nothing about boxing. For me it was a kind of human chess game”. All boxing scenes were shot first, after being all drawn on paper. As for the final scene of “Raging Bull”, where Jake La Motta looks at himself in the mirror, Scorsese considers that “finally there is peace for him. He has stopped the aggression against himself. He has found peace.” A reflection on self and outside aggression, as in many films by Scorsese, “Rgging Bull” had eight nominations including Best Film, Best Direction and Best Actor, the latter won by Robert de Niro. With this screening, Fantasporto celebrates the 40th anniversary of its opening.

In the fifties, a case of possession made the news. The victim is a young woman. The catholic priests choose the best approach to the case which has already caused several deaths and looks quite real. Clarita, the young woman, is an enygma. But the solution may be in her past. With brilliant visual effects, very unusual in Phillipino cinema, this is the new feature by Roderick Cabrido who visited the festival in 2015, winning then the Special Award of the Orient Express Jury with his “Children’s Show”.

Four students, two boys and two girls, study the hypotheses of the existence of other worlds that replicate ours. Com referências cinéfilas constantes, este é um “splater film” onde os efeitos especiais, de alta qualidade, são frequentemente sangrentos e exagerados. Muito humor, alguma influência da Manga japonesa e um ambiente delirante lembram os filmes da Troma.

Argumentista e realizador de “Brake Mode” (2015) e “Sheep in the Night” (2010), trabalha actualmente para a televisão no Japão.

A film crew in action. The assistant director, called Akira Kurosawa, is frequently humiliated by all. But what nobody knows is that in a script he wrote, called “GhostMaster”, there are malefic forces that are going to kill them all one by one. With constant film references, this feature is a “splatter film” in which the high quality special effects match the litres of fake blood used. In the future, a repressive society of one party only, that only offers poverty and pills to its population, that forbids music and burns books, the difference between life and death is small. Marcelo is a young boy who challenges the militarized system that exploits him and many other children, many of them hand in to the authorities right after birth to become soldiers. The day he discovers a guitar, Marcelo runs to the woods where life is equally hard. It is there that he is going to grow up and learn to protect his new family.

Matti is driving his car with her daughter in the back and, suddenly, he vanishes. It is not a one only event. Desde a sua fundação, o Festival Internacional de Cinema do Porto - Fantasporto tem explorado as importantes relações entre o cinema, as artes e as ciências. A participação da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto (FCUP) no Fantasporto dá a conhecer ao grande público tecnologias de imagem avançadas, surpreendentes e de elevado potencial artístico.

A exposição de hologramas será inaugurada no mesmo dia que o próprio festival e estará patente ao público durante a duração do mesmo. Incluirá cerca de uma dezena de hologramas – na sua grande maioria produzidos no Departamento de Física e Astronomia da FCUP (DFA-FCUP), ou da autoria de alumni da FCUP – donde se destacam um dos hologramas com maior profundidade de imagem do mundo e os retratos holográficos do Presidente da República Portuguesa, Prof.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, e do Prémio Nobel da Física 2018, Prof. Gérard Mourou, realizados aquando das suas visitas recentes à FCUP. Serão também exibidos hologramas artísticos produzidos por artistas nacionais e ainda hologramas da colecção do Museu de Ciência da Universidade do Porto. A exposição inclui hologramas de transmissão (os quais geralmente necessitam de um laser para a sua visualização), hologramas de reflexão (que podem ser vistos com luz convencional) e ainda hologramas de reflexão digitais a cores (obtidos com o auxílio de simulação computacional e posteriormente gravados em película holográfica de alta-resolução). Um homem, um ex-jornalista desiludido com o seu passado, entra em crise depois de saber que tem cancro. Num regresso à terra natal, Braga, vai descobrir os restos do seu passado mas também aperceber-se de uma cidade em mudança com uma energia nova. A vida pulsante que vai descobrir na noite e as várias formas de arte que nela se desenvolvem, vão tomar conta dele.

José Oliveira nasce em Braga, em 1982. Em 2010 conclui os estudos de cinema na ESAP. Realiza as curtas-metragens “Pai Natal” (2010) e “Longe” (2016), esta estreada em Locarno. Co-realizou com Marta Ramos e Mário Fernandes “Times Are Changing, Not Me” (2010), “Sem Abrigo” (2012), “O Atirador” (2013), “35 Anos Depois – O Movimento das Coisas” (2015), entre outros. “Os Conselhos da Noite” é a sua primeira longa-metragem de ficção, sendo que acaba de realizar já outra “Guerra”, em corealização com Marta Ramos. É fundador do Lucky Star - Cineclube de Braga.

An ex-journalist, disappointed with his past, is in deep crisis after knowing he has cancer. Returning to his hometown, Braga, he is going to recover bits of his own past and also recognize a city in change with a renewed energy. Its vibrant night life and the forms of art that are developing there are overpowering.

Depois de se ter abordado os grandes clássicos em 2018, o papel da mulher e a influência do cinema na emancipação das mulheres de Taiwan em 2019, apresentamos agora, nesta 40ª edição do festival, esta retrospectiva, The Wheel of Fortune, que nos leva a filmes clássicos de 1969 ou 1998 e a outros mais recentes, mesmo já de 2019. “O Fantasporto tem trazido aos portugueses a essência inovadora do cinema de Taiwan, desde os anos 60 aos anos 80, em três anos consecutivos. com início nos Wuxia, os “black movies” aos mais comerciais Taiyupian (em língua taiwanesa). Este ano, na celebração dos 40 anos do Fantasporto, a Taiwan Cinema Toolkit e a Taiwan Docs, parte do Taiwan Film Institute orgulham-se de

apresentar mais uma retrospectiva, “The Wheel of Fortune”, com uma selecção de filmes desde 1969 até aos dias de hoje, tanto de ficção como documentários com autores e realizadores da nova geração. Como sugere o título, este programa consiste em três dimensões diferentes, olhando para os destinos das pessoas, e, mais interessante ainda, o próprio ciclo da vida. Há filmes que realçam a natureza caprichosa da vida e abrangem até a incarnação nos seus argumentos. Há ainda uma sequela documental controversa entrecortada com uma narrativa não planeada e que expõe sem dúvidas a relação entre o poder do realizador, do seu assunto e do destino dos documentaristas. Mais ainda, há realizadores de curta-metragem que foram convidados a usar o material dos arquivos do Taiwan Film Institute e tirarem inspiração dos clássicos restaurados pelo TFI. Deste modo, acreditamos que estas curta-metragens são simultaneamente um revivalismo mas também uma nova moda.”

After approaching the great classics in 2018, the role played by woman in the cinema which helped their emancipation in society in 2019, we present a program in this 40th edition of the festival, The Wheel of Fortune, a group of classical films dating back to 1969 or 1998, till more modern ones, even from 2019. To the Taiwan Cinema Toolkit, our thanks. “Fantasporto has continually bringing Portuguese audience the innovative essence of Taiwan Cinema throughout 1960s to 1980s in the past three consecutive years, started from Wuxia genre, Taiwan Black movies to commercial Taiyupian (Taiwanese-language films). This year, in celebration of the festival’s 40th edition, Taiwan Cinema Toolkit and Taiwan Docs based under Taiwan Film Institute proudly present further a retrospective program “The Wheel Of Fortune” with a selection of classic films dating back to 1969 until modern day, both narrative features and documentaries, by the auteurs and directors of new generation. Suggested by the name title, this program consists of three different dimensions to look into people’s fate, or more interestingly the cycle of the film itself. There are films which highlight the capricious nature of life and even embody the incarnation within the plots. There is also a controversial “sequel” documentary which is struck by an unplanned narrative and forcibly exposes the underlying power relation among the director, his subject and the unspeakable destiny of documentary making. Furthermore, there are filmmakers invited to create shorts applying the footage materials derived from Taiwan Film Institute’s archive or getting inspiration from TFI’s restored classics. Through these shorts, we believe the revival of archival footage is on its way and retro can be a new fashion.”

De todos os que têm sido visitantes regulares do Fantasporto, o realizador, produtor e distribuidor britânico Julian Richards é um caso singular. um dos realizadores europeus que tem consistentemente abordado nos seus filmes o reino da imaginação, assim como promotor e distribuidor de filmes fantásticos.

De facto, ele compra em todo o mundo, seja em países europeus como nos Estados Unidos ou até em países pouco prováveis no género, como a Venezuela, Brasil ou Israel. Ao mesmo tempo ainda arranja energia para escrever os argumentos e realizar os seus próprios filmes. E para ser uma das pessoas mais simpáticas do mundo do cinema. Nascido em Julho de 1965 em Newport, Gwent, País de Gales no Reino Unido, a sua carreira internacional começa cedo, depois de terminar os seus estudos na National Film School com cerca de 20 anos, com a realização de três curtas, “Pirates” (1987), Prémio de Novos Valores no Celtic Film Festival, “Queen Sacrifice” (1988), considerado Melhor Filme no British Short Film Festival e “Bad Company” (1992) no AFI Film Festival.

O seu sucesso cedo o leva a ser contratado pela BBC onde realiza o docudrama “A Mutter of Voices” (1994) acerca do genocídio no Ruanda, e pelo Channel 4 onde realizou doze episódios da novela de TV “Brookside” (1982). Em 1994, Julian Richards foi contratado pela Amblin Entertainment de Steven Spielberg para fazer o argumento a partir de um romance, “Calling All Monsters”. Dois anos mais tarde, regressa ao Reino Unido para escrever e realizar a sua primeira longa-metragem, “Darklands” (1996), um filme de horror e conspirações acerca do paganismo rural e sacrifício humano, considerado Mélies d’Argent para o Melhor Filme Europeu em 1997, já depois de ter ganho no Fantasporto desse ano o

Prémio da Crítica e o de Melhor Argumento. A partir dessa data, Julian é uma personalidade imprescindível no Fantasporto. A segunda longa-metragem de Julian, um thriller, “Silent Cry” (2002), recebeu o Gold Remi Award no Houston Worldfest e a sua terceira longa, “The Last Horror Movie” (2005) volta a receber o Méliès d’Argent, assim como o Prémio da Crítica no Fantasporto 2004, para além do Prémio de Melhor Actor para Kevin Howarth, presente no festival. Depois, o filme faz carreira e ganha outros prémios, nomeadamente na Argentina, nos Estados Unidos e no Uruguai. “Summer Scars” (2007) traz-nos uma história de adolescentes e ganha dois BAFTAS no País de Gales. Foi seguido de um documentário narrado por Sir Derek Jacobi, chamado “Charles Dickens’ England” em 2009. A seguir, Richards regressa aos Estados Unidos para realizar “Shiver” (2012), um thriller psicológico para a Image Entertainment e em 2016 assina contrato com a New Line Cinema para ser produtor executivo do remake do filme venezuelano “The House at the End of Times” (2013). Quatro anos mais tarde, realiza o terrífico “Daddy’s Girl” para a Seahorse FilmHouse e, meses mais tarde, “Reborn” (2018), um thriller sobrenatural, ambos apresentados no Fantasporto em 2019 e valendo ao realizador, no seu conjunto, o Prémio de Realização. Um feito notável do realizador num festival que tem apresentado a maioria dos seus filmes. A história da vida de Julian Richards também passa pelo seu papel como distribuidor do melhor cinema fantástico do mundo através da sua companhia baseada em Londres, a Jinga Films. Of all those who have been regular visitors of Fantasporto, the British director, producer and distributor Julian Richards is a world apart. Not only because he is one of the few European directors consistently and regularly - but not exclusively - approaching in his films the world of the imagination but also as a promoter and distributor of fantasy films. He buys around the world, from European countries, the States or from unlikely countries such as Venezuela, Brazil or Israel, while still finding time and energy to write direct his own features and being one of the nicest persons in the film business. Born in July, 1965, in Newport, Gwent, Wales UK, his international career starts in his twenties, as a recent graduate of the National Film School, having directed three shorts, “Pirates” (1987), the Start Out Award at the Celtic Film Festival, “Queen Sacrifice” (1988) considered Best Film at the British Short Film Festival, and “Bad Company” (1992) at the AFI Film Festival. His success led to being employed at the BBC where he directed the doc-drama, “A Mutter of Voices” (1994) about the genocide in Rwanda, and Channel 4 where he directed 12 episodes of the Liverpool Soap “Brookside” (1982). In 1994, Richards was hired by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment to adapt the novel “Calling All Monsters” to screenplay. Two years later, he returned to the UK to write and direct his debut feature, “Darklands” (1996), a conspiracy horror film about paganism and human sacrifice and considered the Mélies d’Argent for Best European Fantasy Film in 1997, after having won the Critcs’ Award and Best Screenplay in Fantasporto 1997. From then on, Julian and his films are a must in the Oporto Festival.

REBORN (2018)

Julian’s second feature, a conspiracy thriller, “Silent Cry” (2002) was awarded the Gold Remi at the Houston Worldfest and his third, “The Last Horror Movie” won, again, the Méliès D’Argent for Best European Fantasy in 2005 and got the Critics Award in Fantasporto 2004, with its leading actor, Kevin Howarth – also a visitor in the festival that year considered Best actor, winning awards in Argentina, the States and Uruguay. “Summer Scars” (2007) brought us a story of coming of age which won two Welsh BAFTAS, followed by a documentary, starring Sir Derek Jacobi, called “Charles Dickens’ England” in 2009. Next, Richards returned to the United States to direct “Shiver” (2012), a psychological thriller for Image Entertainment, and in 2016 signed in with New Line Cinema to exec-produce the remake of the Venezuelan feature “The House at the End of Times” (2013). Four years later, Julian Richards directed the terrifying “Daddy’s Girl” for Seahorse FilmHouse and a few months later, “Reborn” (2018), a supernatural horror story, both screened and awarded in Fantasporto 2019. These two latest features were in competition and for them, Julian Richards won the Director’s Award in a festival that has screened firsthand most of his features. The story of Julian’s life also passes by his endeavour as a distributor of the best fantasy cinema in the world with his London-based company Jinga Films. His network all over the world rivals with the number of people who not only respect his pioneer work, but also recognize his effort to promote fantasy and imagination. As a friend, both personal and professional, who visited Fantasporto dozens of times, helping to bring the festival to the frontline, Julian Richards more than deserves what he is getting from us in this 40th edition: a (almost) complete retrospective of his work and our tribute to a great film person.

FRIGHT NIGHTS A Jinga Films é uma companhia à parte. Não só porque se especializa em filmes fantásticos mas também pelo seu trabalho pioneiro. Foi fundada por Julian Richards que continua a ser a face do seu sucesso durante mais de 20 anos. A criação de uma companhia dedicada a um género cinematográfico apenas, teve como resultado imediato a expansão dos filmes fantásticos em todo o mundo, apenas porque foram comprados e promovidos intensamente. A popularidade do género teve também como consequência a aparição de numerosos festivais do fantástico por todo o mundo, facilitando assim as aquisições dos filmes que neles são exibidos. Mais recentemente, as plataformas VOD também ajudaram ao aumento dos fãs do fantástico. Todos os países têm produção de filmes fantásticos, maior ou menor, mas falta-lhes sempre a divulgação. E fazê-lo com amor pelo género é o que a Jinga faz. Depois da aparição da Jinga, outras companhias foram surgindo, assumindo a especialização nos sub-genéros, sejam eles o horror mais duro, as gentis histórias de fadas ou à ficção científica futurista. Contudo, a Jinga sobrevive, sob a direcção de Julian Richards com Rosana Coutinho e Kevin Law. Sempre atentos, sempre ousando ir mais longe. Para o benefício dos espectadores do Fantasporto, a Jinga tem sido uma presença constante, desde que foi fundada. E cá puderam ver, em Antestreia mundial muitas vezes, os seus filmes, ou seja, antes de iniciarem a ronda pelos festivais. Mas o que é mais admirável nesta companhia é a coragem de comprar filmes em todo o mundo. Os espectadores do Fantasporto, pelo menos em relação a Portugal, são os privilegiados que se podem sentar para ver filmes fantásticos da Venezuela, Argentina ou Brasil. E assim, a cooperação entre o Fantasporto e a Jinga Films é vantajosa, esperamos, para os dois lados. Obrigado, Julian, por ajudar o Fantasporto a ser mais internacional, mais variado, mais moderno. Jinga Films is a company apart. Not only because it specializes in fantasy, the first, but also for its pioneer work. Julian Richards founded it and is the best-known face of its success for over 20 years. The creation of a genre company had a direct result a wide-world expansion of the films that are bought, promoting them intensively. The popularity of fantasy genre in the past decades has also fueled the appearance of new festivals, facilitating the acquisitions of films that are promoted and screened there. More recently, the VOD platforms have also supported the increase in the number of fantasy lovers. All countries have a small or big production of this kind of films. But to show them around is very difficult as fantasy is more difficult to promote than all-genre films. Companies need some kind of love for the genre. This is what Jinga does. After the appearance of Jinga Films, other companies of the same type came along, assuming the specialization in all areas of fantasy, from the hardest horror to the gentle fairy tales or futuristic sciencefiction. However, Jinga survives. It is run under the leadership of Julian Richards with Rosana Coutinho and Kevin Law. Always attentive, always daring to go further. To the pleasure of the Fantasporto audience, Jinga has been a presence in the festival since it was founded, screening usually world premieres, that is, before the films start the festival round. But what is most admirable is the courage this company has, to buy from all over the world. Festival audiences, at least in Portugal, are the ones who are most privileged to sit and watch a Venezuelan, Argentinian or a Brazilian fantasy film. So, the cooperation between Fantasporto and Julian’s company has been a fruitful one, we hope, for both sides. Thank you, Julian, for helping Fantasporto to become more international, more varied, more modern. And all the luck in the world.
