Animation öffnet Augen und Ohren Eye- and ear-opening animation

«Film ab!» heisst es ab dem 2. September für Baden: Fünf Tage lang öffnen Kinosäle, Ausstellungsräume und das Merker-Areal ihre Tore exklusiv für Fantoche und den Animationsfilm. Die Wettbewerbe bieten auch dieses Jahr wieder einen bunten Strauss an Filmen unterschiedlichster Genres, Erzähl- und Animationstechniken sowie verschiedenster Stimmungsfärbungen. Zudem warten spannende und schräge Langfilme auf ihr Publikum, ebenso wie vier thematische Programme: Japan als Länderfokus, «Krieg und Frieden» als Beitrag zur Feier des Badener Friedens von 1714, das bewährte Programmgefäss «Animation Multimedial» und – mit «Animation gestern, heute, morgen» – eine Tour d’Horizon des europäischen Animationsfilms. Selbstverständlich erhalten auch das junge Publikum und die AnimationsFachleute wieder eigens auf sie zugeschnittene Programmteile. Animation kann leichtfüssig, unterhaltsam, innovativ und experimentell sein und wird sich am Fantoche 2014 auch so präsentieren. Besonders deutlich wird in diesem Jahr zudem, dass Animation einen wichtigen Beitrag zu ernsten gesellschaftlichen Themen leistet: Animation kann anklagen, politisch Stellung beziehen, dem Publikum die Augen für soziale Missstände und individuelle Tragödien öffnen. Gerade mit diesen Aussagen wirft sie ein grosses Gewicht in die Waagschale der Kultur. Wir wünschen unserem geschätzten Publikum für die Fantoche-Ausgabe 2014 deshalb nicht nur Spass, sondern auch Erkenntnisgewinne und starke Seherfahrungen. From 2 September, “Roll’em!” will be the order of the day for Baden: over five days, cin emas, exhibition spaces and the Merker Areal will be opening their doors exclusively for Fantoche and all things of animation. Once again this year, the competitions offer a colourful bunch of films in a wide range of genres, narrative styles and animation techniques, and a host of moods and sentiments. In addition, audiences can expect a selection of exciting and quirky feature films, along with four themed programmes: we’ve got Japan as our Focus Country, “War and Peace” to celebrate the 1714 Treaty of Baden, the well-established “Animation goes Multimedia” pro gramme thread and – with “Animation yesterday, today, tomorrow” – a tour d’horizon of European animation film. As usual, of course, the younger audience and animation profes sionals will also get their own programme threads tailored to their interests. Animation can be graceful, entertaining, innovative and experimental, and all these styles will be showcased at Fantoche 2014. What’s more, it will become particularly clear this year: that animation makes an important contribution to serious social themes. Animation can incriminate, take a political stand, open the audience’s eyes to social ills and personal tragedies. With statements like these, it carries a lot of weight where culture is concerned. And so, we wish our valued public not only lots of fun for Fantoche’s 2014 outing, but also gains in awareness, and powerful visual experiences. Unsere diesjährigen Wettbewerbsfilme umspannen eine breite Palette an Themen: Freundschaft und Liebe kommen vor, abstrakte visuelle Experimente aber auch pointierte Stellungnahmen. Ungewöhnlich viele Filme brauchen keine Sprache, sondern kommen nur mit bewegten Bildern und Ton aus. Das Publikum aber sprechen sie sowohl mit heiteren als auch unbequemen Botschaften an. This year’s films in competition cover a wide range of topics: friendship and love, abstract visual experiments, as well as political statements. Many of the films do without language. Moving images and sound suffice. They do address to the audi ence though, with cheerful as well as dis comforting messages.

Der neue Film des Studio-Ghibli-Regisseurs Isao Takahata ist eine Interpretation einer alten japanischen Legende: Ein Mädchen wird aus einem Bambus geboren und von Bauern aufgezogen. Obwohl die Geschichte von Reue und Verzweiflung handelt, dringt Takahatas Glaube an eine ideale japanische Gesellschaft stets durch.

In his “farewell” film, Hayao Miyazaki decided to discard fantasy and tells a story set in Japan before WW II. Based on the true story of the Zero Fighter designer Jiro Horikoshi, the film reveals a reality of life that is built upon dreams and sacrifices.

The new film by Studio Ghibli’s master Isao Takahata is an interpretation of an old Japanese legend: the tale of a girl who was born from a bamboo and raised by farmers. Although the story is full of regrets and despair, Takahata’s desire to believe in an ideal Japanese world never vanishes.

The Feather King steals Johan’s mother away one night. Set against a colourfully lit backdrop of images, the determined young hare manages to cross over into the bird of prey’s realm, where bitter insights await him. The film, which is told with sincerity, deals with the topics of death and sorrow, drawing upon Scandinavian folk tales.

In «Rocks In My Pockets» unternimmt die litauisch-amerikanische Animationskünstlerin Signe Baumane eine humorvolle Reflexion über die psychischen Leiden in ihrer Familie. Junpai is involved in underground resistance by the local people and, at the same time, befriends the children of the occupying forces; an insurmountable dilemma.

Ein koreanisches Dorf muss für einen Staudamm geflutet werden. Viele Dorfbewohner setzen ihre letzte Hoffnung auf einen charismatischen Sektenpriester. Nur Min-chul ist skeptisch, aber der Säufer, der nur Fluchworte von sich gibt, ist kaum glaubwürdig. In düsteren Farben schildert Yeon Sang-ho in seinem zweiten Langfilm die sozialen Zustände des fiktiven Ortes ohne Beschönigung.

Immer wieder beeindruckt das Laika Studio mit seinen Stop-Motion-Animationen das Publikum. Der neue Film aus der Portlander Werkstatt handelt von den liebenswerten Schachtel-Trollen, die unter der Erde leben und sich nur des Nachts an die Oberfläche wagen. Im BoxTroll-Reich lebt auch der Menschenjunge Eggs, der auf der Suche nach seinem entführten Adoptivvater dieses Reich zum ersten Mal verlässt.

Angelos Spartalis adaptiert Jules Vernes gleichnamigen Roman in der ersten griechischen Animation in Spielfilmlänge. Seine quirlig-surreale Collage mischt kulturelle Anspielungen und Zitate aus verschiedensten Epochen bunt durcheinander. Raffiniert übt der Film zudem humorvolle und zugleich vernichtende Kritik am kriegerischen Habitus.

A corean village is to be flooded for a dam. Many of the inhabitants place their faith in a charismatic priest. Min-chul is sceptical, but being a drunkard and speaking only in four-letter words, he is barely credible. In his second feature film, Yeon Sang-ho opts for a gloomy style, depicting the social conditions of a fictional place without embellishment.

The Laika Studio has repeatedly wowed the viewing public with its stop motion anima tions. The new film from the Portland-based workshop tells the story of the lovable BoxTrolls who live underground and who only venture to the surface at night. The BoxTroll World is also home to a boy called Eggs who leaves these surroundings for the first time in search of his adoptive father, who has been abducted.

«Josi» oder «onnanoko» (jap. für «Mädchen») sind beliebte Motive in japanischen Ani mationen. Neuerdings nehmen die Mädchen jedoch selbst lebhaft am Filmschaffen teil. Das besagte Element aber wird von Männern und Frauen sehr unterschiedlich eingesetzt. Im Fokus dieses Programms steht das «Mädchen» im japanischen Indie-Animationsfilm.

Der russische Animationsfilmer Yuri Norstein beklagt das Desinteresse der japanischen Animationskünstler an der Welt, die sie umgibt. In seinen Augen neigen sie dazu, sich in abstrakte innere Welten zu flüchten. Dabei haben wir möglicherweise genau diesem Rückzug in einen inneren Ort der Stille einige der besten Werke der unabhängigen Animationsszene Japans zu verdanken. Russian animator Yuri Norstein scolds Japanese colleagues for their lack of interest in the world around them. In his eyes, they tend to enclosing themselves in abstract inner worlds. On the contrary, their escape to an inner place of calmness may count for some masterpieces of the independent Japanese animation.

Although scarce, some animations were made in response to the earthquake of March ‘11. Anger can be felt in some films, espe cially regarding the Fukushima accident. At the same time, a certain silence is kept. These mixed feelings are representative of the Japanese understanding of life as a chain of sufferings. Zähne sind die härteste Substanz des menschlichen Körpers und bleiben über mehr als tausend Jahre erhalten. Nach dem Tsunami von 2011 halfen Zähne den Ärzten bei der Identifizierung der Leichen. Indem Ryo Hirano diesen eine Stimme verleiht, holt er die verlorenen Erinnerungen zurück und erzählt niedlich und tiefgründig die Leidensgeschichte seines Landes. Teeth are the hardest part of the human body and last for more than thousand years. In the aftermath of 2011’s huge tsunami, remaining teeth helped doctors identify dead bodies. If you give teeth a voice, the lost memories will come back. The way in which Ryo Hirano explores Japan’s history of suffer ing is cute and profound at the same time.

The legendary Japanese animator Taku Furukawa started his career in the 60s. He is an important actor and eyewitness of the history of Japanese independent animation. «Anime Sakka Zakka» ist das Projekt von zwei jungen Animationsfilmerinnen. Dafür wählen sie unabhängige Animatoren («sakka»), die auf ihren Filmen basierende Accessoires («zakka») herstellen, ausstellen und verkaufen. In der Ausstellung verlassen die niedlichen Figuren die Leinwand und verändern auch unseren Alltag.

Masaaki Yuasa, director of “Mind Game”, has been locating himself in a unique position inside the Anime community. Recently, he founded his own independent studio named Science Saru and started international cooperations. Yuasa himself talks about his adventurous journey as an animator. Panel «Going in and out of Animation» “Anime Sakka Zakka” is a project run by two young female animators. They choose independent animators (“sakka”) to make some accessories (“zakka”) based on their animation films and to exhibit and sell them. In this exhibition, intimate and cute charac ters break out from the screen and change the atmosphere of our daily life.

Auch im heutigen Animationsfilmschaffen werden düstere Szenarien wie Grabenkriege, Luftschlachten oder andere Unmenschlichkeiten verhandelt. Und wie ein Blick in unsere diesjährigen Wettbewerbseinreichungen zeigt, greifen junge Filmemacher öfters auf Erzählungen von Kriegsflücht lingen zurück. Even in today’s animation film industry, morbid scenarios such as trench warfare, air battles and other barbarities are explored. And as a look at this year’s competition entries shows, young film-makers go back again and again to tales of war refugees.

Wer von Frieden spricht, denkt nicht nur an ein Zusammenleben ohne Krieg und Gewalt, sondern auch an Wohlstand und Lebensglück. Es sind Dinge, die zwar durch das Beenden von kriegerischen Handlungen erst möglich, allerdings deswegen noch lange nicht selbstverständlich sind.
