The Independent Fanzine Magazine is an expression of urban art that invites to create handmade publications in amateur category, without previous structures. Special thanks: To the women who agreed to share their perspectives and “feelings of the social outburst”, by capturing their stories during the first three months of the movement. To María José and Bastián, for their commitment and enthusiasm in carrying out the following pages. To Felipe Moraga for his editing advice and to Lorena Troncoso for her design and graphic observations. To the authors of the visual material who shared their photographs, watercolors, and illustrations. 2

Photography holds a moment through the light , just as illustration or painting holds it through a print , an engraving , a graphite , a brush . T he I ndependent Fanzine Magazine “Sentir del estallido social en C hile ” (F eelings of the social outburst in C hile in E nglish ) reflects that initial period , through experiences described by women and designs with light captured in the demonstrations of the last quarter of

2019.

“People

are no longer afraid to show their anger in front of issues that, for a long time, had been kept quiet”.

Bárbara Díaz R, Environmental Engineer, 27 years old. 4

Isis Fuentealba Quiñones. Campus of the University of Concepción, March 2020.

“At first, (I felt) fear

that the movement would expand from Santiago to the rest of the country, fear to the sabotage of cutting the power and to the shortage”.

Marta Agurto H, Pensioner,

77 years old.

Cynthia Fonseca Aranda. Los Andes Savings Bank Building, Concepción. October 2019.

“I was up on the mountain when the outburst started, I found out when I descended through a WhatsApp message received from my family in Spain. I remember a lot of confusion when I arrived at Concepción, a feeling of fear and chaos, and at the same time emotion when I saw the people taking the streets. I felt there was something strong coming, a historical moment”. Susana Fernández V, PhD in Physics, University of Bern, 34 years old.

“I remember the mocking words of the Minister of Economy Fontaine, referring to the fact that people should get up earlier to pay less money”. Bárbara Díaz R, Environmental Engineer, 27 years old. 7

It

is motivating for me to be present where the events are taking place in order to create a space of autonomy and critical judgment regarding what is happening. The demonstrations are an important cultural space where I recognize the idiosyncrasies and needs of my community. Paula Leonor. Los Carrera Avenue, ConcepciĂłn. March 2020.

Josefina PiĂąa H, 27 years old. 8

“When I go to the demonstrations, my skin bristles, sometimes I cry out of sadness and happiness ”. Ana Araneda, PhD in Environmental Sciences, University of Concepción, Chile.

“I try not to get close. This scares me, since I remember that after the 1973 military coup , when I was working in a place right in the city center of C oncepción , they threw bombs and the gas was suffocating me ”. Marta Agurto H, Pensioner, 77 years old 9

WHICH NEW SENSATIONS HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED SINCE OCTOBER 18, 2019?

“I feel more present, but at the same time more exhausted”. Francisca Hinrichs D, Humanist Psychologist, 29 years old.

“I

feel that the people are more united than ever, and they can do anything”.

Javiera Peralta P, Biologist, 25 years old.

glances, the communion, the brotherhood, the consciousness and the reconsideration of priorities”. Francisca Hinrichs D, Humanist Psychologist, 29 years old. 12

WHAT DO YOU LIKE THE MOST ABOUT THE SOCIAL OUTBURST?

WHAT HAS BOTHERED YOU THE MOST ABOUT THE SOCIAL OUTBURST?

“What bothers me the most is the abuse of power, and the miserable way in which they try to calm this whole movement”.

Beatriz Poblete, TNS Business Administration student, 22 years old.

13

“Now most of the people participate in their neighborhood meetings, assemblies, town councils, communal cooking pots and are actively involved with the neighbors and the populations. In addition, we have prioritized buying from small businesses, district stores, and flea markets. Javiera Peralta P, Biologist, 25 years old.

“There is a feeling of community that I have before, especially on a neighborhood level”.

“I have seen how they have attacked our friends, beating

them and denigrating them with no need to react in such a way in the demonstrations”.

Javiera Peralta P, Biologist, 25 years old.

“It

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE VIOLENCE THAT COMES WITH THE SOCIAL OUTBURST?

hurts me to see it and I criticize it, I am not in favor of violence, but I feel that it would not have been possible to be heard without that dose of violence. There is no peaceful revolution”.

Susana Fernández V, PhD in Physics, University of Bern, 34 years old

“Well, the demonstrations are going in the right direction, because you have to make yourself heard, but I am bothered by the vandalism, the looting”. Marta Agurto H, Pensioner, 77 years old. 17

DO YOU CONSIDER THAT THERE IS A CLIMATE OF CITIZEN POLARIZATION? “Yes, I

consider that there is polarization. From the existence of the right-winged posh guy (cuico facho) to the poor guy (huacho). Both social categories persist and have been generating more and more identity in some sectors of the population. In the case of the huacho, it can be seen in some emblematic figures such as the matapacos, a stray dog that “kills policemen”. In the case of the cuicos, the support to people like José Antonio Kast”.

Josefina Piña, 27 years old. 18

1919 Paula Leonor. Shopping Mall Mall del Centro, Concepciรณn. November

“There is polarization, the privileged sectors have no need at all for a change, they have never had it, that’s why they don’t understand what people live day by day (...) They think that the poor are ‘lazy’, they think that they don’t try hard enough (...) Those of us in the middle understand everything, because we move between the two sectors. We observe helplessly how we cannot afford what the rich have and how they don’t give us a single benefit to pay taxes (...) We pay just for existing”. Úrsula Pérez V, Biology Teacher, Odontology Student, 38 years old

WHICH OF THE CLAIMS IS THE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU? WHY?

22

“The one that involves most people, I think. The raising of the AFP retirement pensions because everyone will eventually come to that”. Marta Agurto H, Pensioner, 77 years old.

“That

the elderly people have a decent pension and can finally rest and enjoy their last years of their lives”.

Javiera Peralta P, Biologist, 25 years old.

Paulina Salazar. Los Carrera Avenue, Concepción. March 2020.

HOW WOULD YOU LIKE CHILE TO BE IN TEN YEARS?

A country that guarantees an effective healthcare system

and an education that provides greater opportunities for expression and freedom to the population and less occasions for discipline and indoctrination. A country with more access to culture: more literate, more updated in terms of feminism, history of Chile, sustainability, sexual and ethnic minorities.

Josefina PiĂąa H, 27 years old. 24 24
