The company launched different games like Idle World, Idle Human, 9 Months, Stairway to Heaven to name a few. Funcell is a classic example of an innovative entrepreneurial journey where the product became successful after so many failed launches. You won’t believe it, but for nine longer, years, I kept on making games but no one of the games were shining. I could manage to run this firm initially because I already had my father’s growing textile business. I used to take money from this business and invest in game development. There was always an option to leave this gaming industry and start working actively for the textile business. But I always wanted to do something different, and mobile gaming was something I was passionate about. Fortunately, with the support of my brothers and financial backup from the family business, I got the opportunity to make my own game and showcase my idea to the world. Finally, I established the gaming company in 2010 and launched it in the app store. At first, I learned a little bit of coding and developed the app myself. Well, it did not work out. So, I approached a game development company in Ahmedabad, called DMNS. I told them that I have a lot of ideas on how to make games. Can you make it for me? Their answer was yes, they started making games for me.”
MILESTONES ACHIEVED BY FUNCELL Idle World: Published in May 2019, Idle World ranked no 1 in the US, UK, Australia, Canada amongst all the apps and games of the world for seven consecutive days and still has 20000 downloads daily. It reached two million active users with top 20 Worldwide Rankings. Idle Human: After the success of Idle World, the company launched another game in August 2019 – Idle Human. It also had great success with 60+ million downloads. It had one day three lakh downloads and reached No. 1 Position in Worldwide Rankings 9 Months: Launched in April 2020, the 9 Months has also been a great success with 15 million downloads in just 3 months and has 100k downloads every day. It was such a big release that took the world storm, achieving the No. 3 Position in Worldwide Rankings. There was one development company, I worked with them for 7-8 years and later, I bought that firm. During acquisition, the firm was a 20-member team. It was struggling hard to stay competitive and grow in the market. But there was no positive result. After I acquired them, I worked with them as a family. I increased their pay scales, and in the last two year, the company has grown well. There are no hard-core rules for employees that they have to do certain things under a certain timeline, there is a free and flexible work culture.”

Abhishek loves to read Dan Brown’s books and watch movies. He mainly gets inspired from watching knowledge-based TV series that are focused on science and technology and all discovery channels. Abhishek also read Buddhism and Gita multiple times in the situations when I needed some motivation. In hobbies, he has been state level champion in table tennis and chess. These days, he spends his spare time playing tennis.

I want to make my company one of the world’s biggest. We do not just make games for the Indian audience only but we make games for the worldwide audience and mainly for the US and Europe, Australia, and Canada. The focus is to make a worldwide company”, the leading man further apprised.
STANDING STRONG AGAINST CHALLENGES & FUTURE OUTLOOK
The biggest difficulty has been the competition. Funcell is not the company competing with others just in India but it is a company competing against thousands of companies across the globe. It is working globally where new games are launched daily. So, there is a pressure of creating something unique every time.
“Creating something new may sound easy but when you start working and coming up with new ideas to fight against the world, it is quite challenging”, the visionary mentioned. At present, the plan is to expand the team size, take it from the 60-member team to a 100-member team by the end of May where there will be 20 game developers, 20 editors, 30 artists. Developing at least one new game every month is another future plan. And, the longterm future goal is to make Kolkata the gaming hub of the country. 15

How V.G. SIDDHARTHA turned CAFE COFFEE DAY into a million-dollar Company The meteoric rise of the Café Coffee Day Brand is still known as one of the greatest success stories of home-grown businesses in India. There are two reasons why we really want to talk about CCD’s success journey. First, the company has seen catastrophic but still standing in the market and giving real competition to most popular brands like Starbucks, Barista, and Costa Coffee. On the other side, a woman entrepreneur Malvika Hegde, Siddharth’s wife, is proven to be superwoman for this CCD. INTRODUCTION Café Coffee Day was launched in Bengaluru in 1996 with one retail outlet by VG Siddharth. It was meant for customers to sit and surf the internet while enjoying their Coffee. Café Coffee Day (CCD) is an Indian multinational Chain of coffeehouses headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The company serves one of the largest Indian Tea and Coffee lovers with approximately 550 locations and 15,000 all across the country. Café Coffee Day has won millions of Indian tea and coffee lovers’ trust. However, not limiting themselves to Coffee and Tea, Café Coffee Day also offers a range of snacks like Paneer Garlic Bread, Spinach “N” Corn Garlic Bread, and more. CCD has changed the tea and Coffee Drinking culture. Remains ahead of its competitors such as Starbucks, Costa Coffee, McDonald’s, and Barista. FOUNDER JOURNEY It all started when Late V. G Siddharth completed his education. Now, he had two options, whether he could have started his own business or supported the growing coffee plantation of his family business. But the ambitious him toward something else, which made him do something his own. Agreeing to that, his father gave him 5 Lakhs and said that he is always welcome to the family business whenever he wants. So, with that money, he bought land for about Rs 3 Lakhs and credited the remaining to his bank. Later, Late V. G Siddharth decided to go to Bombay (now Mumbai). From the day Siddharth landed, the very next day, he randomly walked into Mahendran Kampani of J.M. Financial office without an appointment. What happened was that he had never seen an elevator in his life, so he climbed up the six floors, where he found J.M Financial’s office. After his short wait and good talk, he got a job opportunity at Mr. Naveen Bahi JM finance in Mumbai as a management trainee/intern for trading in the Indian Stock Market. While working at J.M. Financial services, he learned about investment, handling accounts of big companies, and more. Kapani personally trained him to understand the importance of a tiny little gold on the surface and to grab them first. After working two years, Siddharth came back with confidence - ready to start something his own. With saving money, he started his own financial firm. During the time, the stock market had crashed. He was looking around for a new investment opportunity that would give him a good return and thus how V.G Sidharth named his first business Sivan Securities. Finally, in 1996, The first Café Coffee Day outlet was opened with the slogan “A LOT can happen over Coffee!” In a matter of a few years, Café Coffee Day became one of the most dominant players in the Coffee business market. By 2011, The company had more than 1000 outlets across the country. Internationally, CCDs were introduced in Austria, the Czech Republic, Malaysia, Nepal, and Egypt, before shutting down all.
CAFÉ COFFEE DAY JOURNEY Siddharth happened to come across a German famous chain coffee brand (Tchibo Gold) owner, who was interested in buying coffee beans from his coffee plantation. During the brief discussion with Tchibo owner, the owner told the story of how his band actually started in a small 10ft. shop in Hamburg, Germany with bare minimum investment, and how within a span of nearly 40 years, it had turned into Multi-Million Dollar Business globally and 2nd largest coffee roaster in Europe.
THE SECRET OF SUCCESS The success is attributed to the early mover benefit, which aided the coffee chain to build its markets in India and the innovative police incorporated thereafter, which helped it to maintain.
While running his own investment banking business, V.B Siddharth was supporting his own family business as well. ” During the business, what he saw was that government policies and the soaring high import and export duties made it even more difficult for Indian Coffee producers to keep the price low or to venture out into international coffee cartels. Hence, Siddharth took this issue and aimed to change the current scenario. He united coffee producers and headed to the finance minister (Manmohan Singh) to solve such a policy. Soon, the problem was shorted out. “
The coffee beans (from his own coffee plantation) are used at the CCDs. Besides, own designed coffee machine is used at the cafeterias. Moreover, Café Coffee Day stands out for its exclusive color theme and custom-made furniture pieces that give them an identity. WHAT HAPPENED TO CCD’S FOUNDER? Everything was going well. Soon the company converted into a public company and then changed the name to Coffee Day Enterprise. But Siddharth’s business idea (CCD) is debtcentric – meaning taking debt from markets. The founder lost grip on his business empire, and soon it nosedived into debts.
This inspiring story of the Tchibo Brand gave Siddharth completely different thoughts and outlooks to build a great business empire. In 1992, Siddharth started his own coffee business named ABC (Amalgamated Bean Company) called Coffee Day Global, an integrated coffee business, that ranges from procuring, processing, and roasting coffee beans to retailing coffee products. Within just two years, the company had become India’s biggest coffee exporter. They have opened 25 stores in just Chennai. Soon, he realized that margins were limited in this business, and he would need a better option to survive. Luckily, in 1995, it was time when café culture was introduced globally.
In 2017, the income tax raided the offices of the coffee chain, which showed that the company was in huge financial debt. As per data, in march 2019, CCD had accumulated a debt of Rs 6,550 crore. CCD didn’t contribute to the debt but instead has shown profits of the last three fiscal years. It Indicates CCDs governance failure. In July 2019, Café Coffee Day came in news when VG Siddhartha mysteriously disappeared after stepping out of his care for a walk at the bridge near Mangalore in Karnataka. After two days, the authorities recovered his body from the nearby river. His death was declared as a suicide. Reportedly, the founder had taken the step after coming under an immense financial strain, reportedly to be tune of Rs 11,000 crore. In an unverified latter, the founder had also alleged harassment from Income Tax officials.
Siddharth would frequently go to Singapore. On a Singapore trip, his eyes caught the crowd at some shops. He found out that those shops were offering free internet. After coming to India, he discussed with the management team and decided to open a coffee café across the country. He designed the idea - café with Coffee along with one-hour free internet. For your information, the internet was considered a luxury thing and had a limited area at those times. The idea seems bankable.
WHO IS THE NEW CEO OF CAFÉ COFFEE DAY?
After his death, overall, the company took a big hit. But, Malavika Hegde, Siddhartha’s wife, and former Karnataka chief minister S.M. Krishan took over the reins of the company at a crucial juncture and scripted an amazing saga of resurrection. Now, the company is doing great in the hand of Malvika, who introduced a slew of measures to save it. Before becoming the CEO of CCD, she has worked as a non– board member of CEDL for many years.

Malvika took over the company as the CEO during the lockdown period. She made sure to not increase the price of items. She pulled down the shutters on many outlets that weren’t making the profits. Moreover, she has pumped capital into the company by attracting new investors. The debt has been brought down from 6,550 to Rs 1731 crores as of 2021. In short, she has been successfully running the outlets since the very first day as CEO of CCD.
