In the modern world, skill development is crucial as it enables individuals to acquire the practical abilities and knowledge required to excel in their chosen field and grab better employment opportunities within a short span of learning the respective skill. In many cases, possessing specific skills can be more beneficial than having a higher tertiary degree, as employers often prioritize practical skills and experience over academic qualifications. This is particularly true when it comes to the industries such as technology, finance, hospitality and healthcare, where specialized skills and certifications are highly valued.

In countries like India and Australia, skill development has proven to be critical due to their respective rapidly growing economies and changing job markets. REACH is a community-based Registered Training Organisation with a clear objective of improving individuals’ lives and enabling learners to contribute positively to the community. The organisation strives to promote engagement by offering skill-building training programs, with a particular emphasis on youth living in rural India and disadvantaged communities in Australia. REACH is a commercial organisation with a community mindset in its approach to skills training.

To ensure that they provide adequate support to communities in both countries, they utilize their proven skills training framework from Australia and implement it in remote and rural areas in India, REACH through its Indian Subsidiary Australian Skill Development, works closely with local communities. The company’s primary goal is to offer high-quality education and training that could result in better job opportunities for all learners, including those who are long-term unemployed, refugees, persons with disabilities, or from disadvantaged groups.

One of the key areas where REACH has created an enormous impact is in helping refugees and survivors of civil war and new migrants in Australia gain jobs and career pathways. These individuals often face significant challenges in securing employment due to their lack of confidence and skills. In addition, REACH is the leading provider of International Trainer and Assessor Course (TOT Training) developed by the Australian Government and accredited by NSDC, India for Indian Trainers undertaking competency-based skills training in India. Also, collaborating with British Council to train TOT for English and Soft Skills Training to our Trainers and Assessors to enhance their skills in conducting and assessing students in the respective training programs.

The unique blended delivery mode supports learners who are working part-time in the industry and wish to undertake further training to enhance their skills and knowledge or for career progression.

Navigating challenges to emerge victorious

Despite challenges such as the pandemic, REACH has successfully met its goals and objectives through a number of impactful strategies. In the past 12 months, REACH has created numerous opportunities for talented professionals to better assist and support its learners, resulting in an increase in staffing numbers. REACH held daily stand-up team meetings to identify challenges and support needs and provide early intervention measures to address issues quickly. The meetings also promoted transparency, recognized strong performance, and ensured alignment with REACH objectives. Every six months, strategy day meetings were held where the leadership team participated in strategic planning and goal setting, evaluated new ways of working and engaged with the learners. REACH also invested in new software and systems to build on existing opportunities, enhance productivity, and improve efficiency. The systems enabled staff to access information remotely and provided better visibility and tracking of enquiries, resulting in faster response times and a seamless learning journey.

The Leader’s Insights on the VET Ecosystem

Suresh shared his keen thoughts on how the VET ecosystem is different in Australia and India. He emphasized facilitating such an environment that could contribute and strategize as per the need of both countries accordingly. He elucidates that Australia’s vocational education and training (VET) system has evolved significantly over time and has faced and continues to face similar challenges as India’s VET system, albeit on a smaller scale. The Australian VET system is led by the industry and caters to various age groups and demographics. It offers both initial education and training, as well as re-training, upskilling, and career change opportunities. VET can be delivered both in institutions and workplaces, and qualifications are nationally recognized. The current reform efforts in Australia aim to ensure quality provision and recognize the crucial role of industry in shaping a robust system that benefits both individuals and enterprises.

On the other hand, India faces a significant skills gap in terms of quality and quantity, with a training capacity of only 3.1 million people per year. The Modi government’s Skilling India concept envisions a rapid increase in India’s training capacity. However, achieving this ambitious goal will require “root and branch” changes to its VET sector, given the various challenges it faces, such as competing agencies and interests, a lack of infrastructure and up-to-date equipment, and a shortage of VET Trainers.

Suresh emphasized that To achieve its skills ambitions, India must not only address the technical and resource issues but also create a brand awareness for the demand for high-quality vocational training that is directly linked to the labour market and provides tangible benefits to individuals and employers.

Kishore Biyani, the founder and CEO of Future Group, is often referred to as India’s Sam Walton. India’s Retail King Kishore Biyani revolutionized the retail industry. Kishore is the man who has taken the retail business by storm and now has zillions of successes under his belt, but he has also experienced his fair share of disappointments! The Future Group already has more than 70 million square feet of retail space in 90 cities and 60 rural regions, with plans to develop another 9 million square feet in the coming years.

HOW DID HE BEGIN?

Kishore Biyani, the company’s creator, comes from a business experience. His grandfather had a garment store, and his entire family worked there. Kishore wants to accomplish something different in this industry. He then decided to open a retail business where he could get everything, he needed under one roof at a reasonable price. His initiative stunned the retail industry as a whole. He started his first store in Kolkata and went on to open more than 50 locations across the country within a year. Kishore Biyani started Big Bazaar in 2001. Biyani wanted to be a filmmaker at first, but after failing at that, he became one of India’s largest retail proprietors.

Success Story

CAREER

Biyani began his commercial experience in the late 1980s by creating readymade trousers, but his retail journey began in the late 1990s when he opened a Pantaloons store and a Big Bazaar in Calcutta. He is a graduate of HR College in Mumbai and comes from a business family with roots in Rajasthan.

Biyani planned to rely primarily on white-label FMCG created under Future Consumer Enterprises and to stock his stores with the cheapest and best groceries. While he will continue to stock FMCG products from companies such as ITC and Hindustan Unilever (HUL), having his labels allows him to provide the best value while still safeguarding his margins. Biyani believed it would be a big source of money and profit, as well as the most important aspect of his strategy.

Pantaloons, Big Bazaar, Food Bazaar, and Central were among the new formats and labels he introduced. Biyani was compelled to restructure the company in late 2009, de-merging the non-retail assets. He concentrated on only four formats rather than the usual 24. Pantaloons, Central, Big Bazaar, and Food Bazaar were among the stores that were kept. The debt problem, on the other hand, refused to go away.

The debt for the core retail company increased to INR 5,800 crore in April 2012, with a net debt-to-equity ratio of 1.8x. The debt was roughly 55% of the EBITDA in FY12. In the same year, he sold Pantaloons to the Aditya Birla group for INR 1,600 crore, his first big triumph. He and his family-owned 33.5

percent of Future Group, but almost all of it was committed to lenders.

Big Bazaar opened 250 retail shops in 125 locations across India. They now have more than 12 million tales around the country. Clothing, kitchen appliances, toiletries, and other household items are sold at their 7 million outlets. The remaining 5 million stores sell everything connected to food. Big Bazaar purchases products directly from manufacturers, eliminating all intermediaries. It allows them to make a significant profit margin on all of their products. They also give their consumers discounts without incurring any losses.

It didn’t help that the country was put under lockdown after the COVID-19 disturbance at the end of March. Although stores offering essentials may be opened, customers preferred to purchase at their local stores or turn to internet retailers. Big Bazaar stores were largely found in malls that were

built much later and are still struggling to attract customers. The shares of the company dropped by more than 80% in just four months as a result of the damage.

Kishore Biyani began his career by renting modest rooms or simple stores to display his wares on the spur of the moment. This allowed him to gain a better understanding of his customers. Biyani, according to Future Group staff, is frequently seen standing in the mall atrium, monitoring his customers. One of his key interests is stated to be understanding people and their attitudes. Biyani, according to many who know him, has a sixth sense of what customers want and goes to great lengths to measure the pulse of the Indian client.

He is also a Bollywood fan and producer of two Bollywood films: Na Tum Jaano Na Hum and Chura Liya Hai Tumne spent nearly INR 26 crore.

GLOBAL CHIP SHORTAGE MAY SPOIL FESTIVE SEASON SALES

WHY ARE WE IN THIS SITUATION ?

According to reports, the automobile sector and other industries may lose a significant part of sales during the festive season due to shortage of chips, leading to shutdown of production lines and supply production remain behind demand. There is a possibility of further climbing during festive Season.

The Covid-19 pandemic, combined with a boom in demand for electronics, caused a global chip shortage. Consumers and corporations began purchasing new laptops and servers to accommodate remote workers and homeschooled children. As a result, while global semiconductor sales fell between 2018 and 2019, they increased by 6.5 percent in 2020. This strong rise has continued in 2021, with sales for May 2021 up 26% over the same period last year, according to trade group the Semiconductor Industry Association.

Aside from the pandemic, other causes contributing to the scarcity include a 50-year-long drought in Taiwan, which has left TSMC and other chipmakers struggling to obtain sufficient amounts of water, which is essential in chip fabrication. “Other occurrences, including factory fires, power outages, and the shipping blockade at the Suez Canal, have slowed supply,” said Shane Rau, a semiconductor analyst at IDC.

According to Soumitra Bhattacharya, MD of Bosch, the chip scarcity would influence the car market until 2022. According to Bloomberg, carmakers are increasingly omitting high-end features to cope with the chip scarcity.

Consumer goods and smartphone manufacturers, as well as the automobile industry, are under pressure to keep up with rising demand.

Samsung, a South Korean consumer electronics and durables company, recently announced that the chip shortage has impacted its television and appliance output. Apple, LG, and other Chinese electronics and smartphone manufacturers have all been impacted by the chip shortage.

HOW AND WHEN WILL IT BE RESOLVED?

Semiconductor supply was expected to recover by the end of 2021, but analysts anticipate the global chip shortage would continue into the following year, maybe until 2023. According to Malcolm Penn, CEO of industry analysis firm Future Horizons, current capacity investments will not influence for some time. “CapEx is starting to materialize now,” Penn added, “but it takes a year to develop up and kick in.

Since the beginning of the epidemic, many businesses from various industries have expressed their concerns about the situation. Chip demand is outstripping supply, and several automakers and consumer electronics companies throughout the world have announced that production would be harmed.

According to Penn, the last quarter of 2021 will be a major indicator of how long the chip scarcity will last. In Q4, demand tends to slow, which may allow suppliers to catch up on orders. “That slowdown is unlikely to be severe enough to bring supply and demand back into balance,” Penn said, “but if we limp through it, shortages will persist through the first half of 2022 until the current CapEx spend starts to impact supply.” If demand remains strong, “the shortages could easily persist into the first half of 2023.
