AN ASTUTE TECHNOLOGIST & LEADER
Julie is among the early technologists to see the seismic shifts worldwide. She graduated in business finance and computer information systems in the 80s; and then spent many formative years serving tech giants such as IBM and Georgia Pacific. She had an excellent trajectory, starting as an intern in IBM and then getting promoted as a Financial Manager in Georgia Pacific and leading the accounting team and of a large division and implementing PC’s and software applications across the division. But she wanted more from life. In 1989, she bid farewell to the big corporate (at the time was very limiting and didn’t have an “Intrapreneurship” mindset) and conceptualized her 1st business. She spent the next 25 years establishing SaaS-based companies to address emerging problems in the business landscape. Her focus was on HR Technologies, where she developed bespoke tools that assisted critical decisions by integrating behavioral sciences, technology, and predictive analytics.
IDEATING MORPHII®
There was a clinical psychologist in the USA who, at the beginning of each session, would have to legally ask patients to complete a survey form to learn how they felt. But, he was required to use traditional methods (like rating 1-5) to report their level of sadness, anxiety and other emotions. The patients struggled to communicate using these methods. One day, the doctor brought in a few faces made on placards - and patients could easily communicate their emotions. This story inspired the development of Morphii®. Since Julie had a long history of developing products that encourage people and businesses to connect and thrive, Vizbii Technologies welcomed her to lead the product’s development and build a business around it. “Organizations value knowing exactly how their consumers feel, and Morphii® makes it easy for consumers to answer. With Vizbii Technologies, Julie has set a new milestone in her entrepreneurial career. She is in her 5th startup, and it’s safe to say entrepreneurism has elevated her way of life. She has cultivated a low tolerance policy
towards a narcissistic mindset. After 30 years of startups and building partnerships, she has learned a few critical lessons and a model that she lives by. A company might have a bright idea, a good team, and funding, but success demands more than that. JULIE MORELAND – AN ICON OF CHANGE
While Morphii® is patented to drive experience, its leader Julie inspires change in the landscape. It’s one of her core fortes as an influential leader. She is a technologist, but she has also pursued other personal passions along the way. Originally, she intended to become a psychologist and was talked out of it by college counselors. She has found ways to incorporate her original passions while building SaaS based startups. She has pursued those passions by securing certificates in Animal Communication and Reiki. She found a way to fuse her original passion of Behavioral Psychology with technology and business to become the leader she is today. But becoming a leader was a journey on its own. In Georgia Pacific, she oversaw the accounting department for its 160 supply distribution centers which were all led by men. And they would ignore her and report directly to her boss. This illustrates the traditional attitude and dictatorial business model. Back then, only 5% of the USA’s businesses were led by women equating to only 400,000 businesswomen. They had meager funding as compared to men. But with time, Julie has seen a lot of positive change towards women leaders. Today, women lead 20% of businesses around the world. In the USA, over 16% of businesses are woman-led. This 14
includes many private equity groups led by women like Mala Gaonkar, Divya Nettimi, Jane Wu, etc. While there has been a precipitous drop in funding due to COVID-19, it will rise with time. Growing with these changes, Julie has created the expertise to lead teams with an agile mindset. “We have a long way to go, but it is getting better,” she proclaims.
LEADING A SOCIAL DRIVE
Besides business, Julie puts her heart and soul into woman empowerment. She is part of the Women Presidents Organisation (WPO), which outlines leadership growth. It’s a global community where dynamic leaders share their game-changing experiences. They share their challenges in their professional and personal life, and the community brainstorms them. Everyone puts inquisitive effort and curates solutions from the other person’s perspective. “It’s like a mastermind session, which helps in bringing out the innate challenges and problem solving them by connecting,” explains Julie. She has been a part of this innovative community since 2010, starting from the San Francisco chapter and now in the Silicon Valley Chapter. She has been a contributing listener, helping people voice their underlying problems.
TEAMWORK MAKES DREAMWORK
Julie is a people-centric leader and believes that they are the foundation of any successful business. She does not, however, abandon her underlying ethos of team building. “You can have a mediocre product or service and still be
successful if you have the right team; if you don’t, you’ll fail,” asserts Julie. With the same thought process, she leads a cadre of experts. She calls them her ‘SWAT Team’ for their innate dynamism and agility in execution. The team is adaptive to any situation and gets the job done efficiently. They are also well compensated for their talents. The team also partners with its contractors & distributors on project execution. Julie also concentrates on inspiring the team. Specifically, she motivates them to pursue their interests. But then again, she keeps their passion aligned with the company’s goals. In other words, she invests in developing the skills that help the company and them individually.
THE FRUITS OF LABOUR
Navigating through the highs and lows of a transformative landscape, Julie has put many notches in her belt. She sold one of her businesses in 2013 to a company she was doing business with. While she was not looking for an acquisition, the timing and situation was right. “From creating a product, building a team, getting sales, going out and finding the acquiring partner, and then securing that acquisition to get a return, it’s a great win,” Julie asserts proudly. Last year, she was awarded in ‘Top 10 Women Impacting Tech 2021’ by Analytics Insight. Silicon Review enlisted Vizbii Technologies under ’30 Fastest Growing Tech Companies’. Morphii® also won the award of ‘Most Innovative Emotion Tracking Software Solution’ by CorporateVision. Other than this, she was part of a group of 20 women leaders who wrote a best selling book nearly a decade ago called “Women Who Mean Business”. Each wrote a chapter about inspiring thoughts that can help other women be successful.

When we questioned Julie about her plans for herself and her firm, she modestly said, “Funding for business women and business development.” She wants to harness the value that women bring to the global economy. Studies have shown that women, whether in business or leadership, often outperform companies that are not led by women. According to a Catalyst analysis, outperformance is seen across three important metrics: return on sales (84%), return on invested capital (60%), and return on equity (46%). Through WPO, Julie aims to step up the game and drive major
advancement in the financial impact of women-run organizations worldwide. Coming to business, Julie and her team are in a transitioning period. With the completion of their R&D, they are raising funds to increase headcounts. “We went from 10 to three, now we’re going to go back up to seven,” says Julie. And the focus is on specialists in marketing, sales, and technology. They are also about to launch a plugin for WordPress. Users can download Morphii® to use on their websites. With these prospects, Julie and her team plan to expand into new markets by the end of 2022.

Psychology taught me how to deal with people, colors, my agency experience taught me design, marketing, client servicing and I kept accumulating knowledge and then ventured to make it on my own.” The company was initially dealing only in the Real Estate realm but, in the year 2014, the team expanded their business into other realms, including Digital Technology, providing turnkey Digital Solutions to key clients and Designs, which included every kind of designing and Social Media Management.

THE GENESIS: HOW IT ALL STARTED
While building her career at another digital agency, Aleena observed the business landscape of content & consulting around social media content & marketing, she could see a clear whitespace. She felt the need for expert content around social media trends, statistics, and usage but the industry was most definitely lacking it. Therefore, she used this need-gap to give cohesive solutions she couldn’t find in the market to benefit the new-age, tech-savvy audience. That is how Dissect was born, to help brands with research and recommendations to benchmark their social media performance relative to peers and competitors. The page initially started off reviewing and researching brand campaigns on Instagram. After a year, she received several positive responses on Instagram, and a slow but steady loyal follower base, which is when Aleena decided to quit her job and focus on the brand. Later, as the brand grew more successful, she expanded to other platforms, created a website, and hired a small team.

With no strict guidelines, it became very easy for companies and agencies to copy original work created by other brands. With Social Media Dissect, I managed to successfully throw light on this issue and ‘shame’ the plagiarists on our social media platform. Along with this, reviewing campaigns by brands across online and offline platforms became an important role played by the page as the audience would keep watching the space to see who has done what. Another thing that sets us apart is that we have a face to our page and a more personalised experience. The audience relates to us because they know who they are communicating with and the content has some value as it is from first-hand experience.

Therefore, things are becoming easier and gradually, discrimination between men and women is also going away. Advance in technology is challenging gender discrimination a lot. However, storytelling and write-ups appreciating an entrepreneur who is a woman, is always an effective way to inspire other women. Moreover, treating women equally as men should be followed.”
It was my first leap of self-confidence that I resigned from my first job as a graduate tax accountant. I opted to become a diamond wholesaler at that time and that was done in partnership with an Indian firm planning to start their business in Australia.
JOURNEY THROUGH THE MOUTH OF THE LUMINARY Shweta feels having good mentors and role models, is an additional benefit in the achievement of your goal. She says, “I have been fortunate enough to have such mentors around me. First of all, I am independent since the age of 13. It was at this age that my journey to Australia began. With my parents staying in Fiji till my high school studies, I was with my elder sister who as a guardian, took care of me and became a great mentor for 35

I did an intensive course in diamond grading with my wholesale business which taught me how to grade diamonds, giving me the confidence and tools to sell. The first three years in any new business is tough but once you learn how to grow with the times, you can not only survive but also excel.” Shweta adds she has learnt a lot about herself after experiencing tough times and that is the reason why she is a strong person today. MY FATHER MY INSPIRATION Shweta’s father has always been a great source of her inspiration. He never feared of anything and challenged himself always to do more business.

Higher Education Being Pushed Towards A Hybrid Model Of Teaching & Learning Covid-19 has driven higher education toward a hybrid paradigm of teaching and learning, the same way, just as it has revolutionized our working environment. According to the report by PwC India as well as the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), both teachers and students have a strong preference for blended learning, which combines physical as well as virtual learning through classrooms and online platforms. The analysis, which was titled “Re-Envisioning higher education through digital adoption”, is based on a research of management, staff, and students performed in the second half of 2020 at over 50 central, state, and private higher education institutions to assess the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak. It demonstrates that during the outbreak, online degrees and certification courses are gaining acceptance among these institutions. According to the survey, 89% of institutes have integrated technology solutions, however, 64% of management has had difficulty integrating digital technologies. Institutes have been in difficulty as a result of the pandemic’s exceptional interruption of normal operations since its inception early last year. According to the survey, one out of every four institutes postponed regular fee collection to address the financial impact, and one out of every three institutes curtailed capital investment.

A 43 percent of higher education institutions undertake online admission tests, with 26% using digital promotion as an entrance method, indicating a substantial shift toward digitalization. Apart from the shortage of a one-stop digital solution for all tasks and the struggle for faculties to keep students involved and motivated, connectivity concerns — only 42% of urban households have an internet connection — are regarded as the main hindrance in the digital journey of the universities. According to the report, 58 percent of students want to take certification classes, while 35 percent want to take degree courses. Sixty percent of students said they would consider pursuing a supplementary online degree from a different college in addition to their present one. Fifty-three percent of students are interested in taking an online course through a hybrid or university-owned platform. As per the study, blended learning is the most successful for 46 percent of professors. While 62 percent of respondents said moving to an online model was difficult, 83 percent believe learners can quickly absorb topics online. Students have the majority of the prerequisites for online learning, and 96% are happy with the current online course delivery.
According to the study, the institutes’ management is actively seeking partnerships with edtech companies.

Over 47% of faculty respondents agree that online education is the way of the future. As a result of this shift, physical infrastructure and facilities can no longer be the primary criteria for students selecting a college.
Technology adoption had been occurring previously, but the outbreak has hastened it, according to Ashok Varma, leader, social sector development, PwC.
“Softer attributes of an institute, such as placement history, diversity of course curricula, and competent and experienced professors, will be more appropriate now,” Varma adds.
