Recently, Business Connect had the opportunity for an interview with this esteemed technocrat. In the conversation, Mark talked about his journey from starting Marvelution as a hobby to establishing its presence across the globe. Marvelution is mushrooming as a firm with customized Jenkins and Jira integration tool that promises better efficiency where it’s implemented. Below is the story from that conversation.

IDEATING TO RE-DEFIENE Mark launched Marvelution in 2008 as an umbrella project to host a number of open source projects he was working on to hone his technological skills. He had no cognizance of how this was going to change his entire life. With time, Marvelution hosted multiple open source projects, but what stood the test of time was the ‘Jira Hudson Integration project’. The fact - that the project had a different take on integrating Hudson, successor to Jenkins with Jira and has been re-written several times to overcome scalability issues, fascinated him. He also knew that users generally opt to configure the integration and behaviour of the built-in configuration of each job in Jenkins. This results in strenuous work, configuring numerous jobs, including credentials needed to push results to Jira. Mark spotted the opportunity to create an offering that connects ‘Jira with Jenkins,’ on the notion that Jira will collect errors, and configure how to update results on Jenkins server in a Jira App. He termed it as ‘A Single Source of Truth’. And to

shape his cognizance, he built the Jenkins Integration for Jira app. Administrators need to configure the integration only once, after that Jenkins pushes data to Jira and Jira in turn will process the results, making sure all necessary actions are taken. Following its launch, the product became a trusted integration for numerous global magnates. The staggering success made Mark establish Marvelution as a fully-fledged Company in 2015 to further continue developing the product and provide integrated support on Jira Cloud.

FLEXIBLE TO TRANSFORMATION With the industrial changes, customer preferences in technology have taken a paradigm shift. Even if it’s a dedicated purpose, the solution needs to be straight out of the box with no exceptions. There was a time when people would work with tech-enablers for a solution that runs best in their framework. But now it’s completely upside down. “The only handful of customers will be willing to work with you after they try your product, but may end up not using it”, asserts Mark. Simply put, customers are less forgiving than they were 10 years ago. On the other hand, there is stirring demand for cloud services. And there need to be continuous developments to stay in the game. Mark understands shifting conditions as a technocrat, which is why his Jenkins Integration for Jira cloud app is updated on a timely basis. COMPETENT WITH CLOUD COMPUTING Cloud computing is growing in full swing to drive customer preferences. When Mark entered the market, people were still using server or data centre deployments for workflow optimization. But as soon as Cloud computing entered the market, it took the technology realm by the storm. Ever since, more and more customers have been shifting to cloud integrations, either for its benefits or due to the influence of tech integrators. With this dynamic shift, Mark also saw that most of the floating features are cloud-first, or cloud-only. For Cloud-first strategies, enterprises would seek for cloudbased solutions to implement or replace their IT infrastructure. On the contrary, the cloud-only approach requires enterprises to implement cloud computing in systems and services. The value and prominence of Cloud, drives Marvelution’s differentiating factor. And while Marvelution is a completely solo-play, it has acted promptly, even off support hours, so that clients aren’t blocked or have to wait for the resolution. Support tickets are responded to as quickly as possible, and if required, are moved to development to implement new features that fit the requirement. In such a case, the support ticket is always linked to the development ticket to make sure the customer (origin) is kept in the loop. Not to mention, with a satisfaction rating of 4 out of 5, Mark and his value-added services have paid off.

SOLO YET CONNECTED Given the fact that Marvelution is: a One-man show, Mark does collaborate with others on certain projects and tasks. And while it’s completely remote work, collaborating with people has helped Mark create a network of people with specific testing skills or design experience. Marvelution always looks for people or companies that are like-minded to collaborate. Everyone in the focus group knows what needs to be done and gets it done. “Put it simply, “it just works”,” remarks Mark.

Working solo on a remote framework benefitted Mark significantly during the COVID-19. Since it was all about getting the job done, it really didn’t matter to him in case he needed to give extra effort. Time is Money! And being technically accommodated, it was easy for him to connect with people for particular assistance. To sum up, where every company was struggling to survive, safeguard its resources, Marvelution manoeuvred through the chaos quite systematically.

A SURREAL UNDERSTANDING OF ACHIEVEMENT When asked about his favourite achievements, Mark proffered two questions, “Am I happy?” or “Did I do what needed to be done?” Before getting into the meaning, we need to understand that work-life balance is important to ensure optimal performance and productivity. Now, Mark feels that focusing on day-to-day goals along with a knack for life will ensure balance or otherwise burnout. Being balanced is not about segregating one from the other, but on the contrary, it’s about maintaining harmony and enjoying life. Mark believes life is a blend of work and personal space. And after a full day’s work, achieving all the desired goals, when you get to bed, you go with a smile, and that is an achievement. And doing so, one finally answers the above-mentioned questions. Mark believes the passion for work and love for life is the greatest achievement anyone can hope for. Although he is the whole & soul of his company, he wants his first and then every employee to experience and experiment on this. Because he believes,

“A happy employee will bring better quality than an unhappy one can ever imagine”.

C

raig Federighi, also known as “Mr. Hair Force One himself”, oversees all major development, such as Mac, IOS, and IPadOS. He is positioned as Apple’s senior VP of software engineering. Craig carries an enthusiastic and funny nature, as we have seen his popular presentations at WWDC and other Apple Events. He has more stage time than others, including Tim Cook. In 2016, he reported, owning over 500,000 shares of Apple stock worth about US$180 million in 2020. Away from the public functions, he is reportedly a great communicator in private. In 2013, the wall street journal said that Apple employees must consider him a responsive executive, someone who replies and reacts to internal emails. His profile has an impressive “rising star” reporting that he tries to build consensus within teams all across the company.

In 1999, Craig quit Apple for corporate software company Ariba, where he was appointed as CTO (Chief Technology Offer).


Early Life Craig was born in 1969 in San Leandro, California. After holding an undergraduate degree from Acalanes High School in Lafayette, California, Craig attended the University, Of California, Berkeley, where he earned a bachelor’s degree from the electrical engineering and computer science branch. Also, he did his master in science stream from the same university. Craig got married in 2014. Now he has 4 children.

Craig Federighi was working with Steve Jobs at NeXT, where he led the development of the Enterprise Objects Framework (EOF) – it was a software tool for large companies by letting their regular computers connect to the enterprise database. In 1996, Craig started working with Apple when it acquired NeXT. Omni Group Cofounder Will Shipley was working with Steve Jobs at NeXT at the time, and later he wrote that he had not anticipated to like Craig Federighi.

in 2011, Will Shipley mentioned in the blog, “In-comes Federighi -the new guy- and he is like seven feet tall and gameshow-host handsome and he’s smiling like a used car salesman,” further, Shipley added, “I will admit it; I was prepared not to like him.”

“You naturally expect a tall, handsome guy to be, well, kind of a jerk,” He said “Like his ideas are more important than yours. But what struck me so hard in that first meeting, so much so that it’s still in my head 17 years later, is that he was there to listen. And not just to passively listen – he wanted to make sure he understood what we were saying, yes, but also to get to the heart of it.” In 1999, Craig quit Apple for corporate software company Ariba, where he was appointed as CTO (Chief Technology Offer). By the time in 2009, he left Ariba and returned to Apple to work on macOS. His first physical appearance was at the WWDC event to give, what Craig called a sneak peek of MacOS X Snow Leopard. In 2011, Craig Federighi succeeded Bertrand Serlet (Previous Vice President) as VP of Mac Software Engineering. In 2012, he was promoted as VP Of Mac software engineering at Apple. As Craig’s responsibility increased within Apple, his stage time at events improved more quickly. He now looks more confident, enthusiastic, and calm while being on stage. However, not all presentations went well. In 2017, when Craig was introducing Apple’s new face ID feature, it embarrassingly failed to work on the first attempt. Before the event, several people had used the new iPhone. This is why during the demonstration, the face ID asked for a passcode because of several failed attempts, later Craig explained. It’s really embarrassing even it was not a failure. However, Craig headed straight onto a backup phone without being worried. Craig Federighi once mentioned, “We are showing the way to the industry, to the customers, that they can demand more – they should expect more- about the protection of their privacy, and that we can move the industry into building things that better protect privacy”. Craig Federighi is one the very few famous faces of Apple, who has been delivering such great products along with his teams. Apple has really great products, and when Craig introduces upcoming Apple products with his cheerful nature and explanation skill, it becomes more interesting to see.

How Long Does it take to from new habits ? Bringing new habits in our daily life, it is kinds of a tricky process, if you asked how long it takes to form a new habit, most of the people will quickly respond “21 days.” However, according to a 2009 study, which printed in the European Journal of Social Psychology, it takes 18 to 254 days for a person to become habitual of new behavior. The study also accepts that, an average person, can take 66 days to bring a new habit in our daily life

In the 1950s, Maxwell Maltz (American cosmetic surgeon) started noticing a strange pattern among his patients. When he would perform an operation (Facial operation) on their patients, Dr. Maltz got that it would take around 21 days to get used to seeing their new face. He also not noticed those patients who had an arm or leg amputated, they would sense a phantom limb for about 21 days before adjusting a new situation. Later, he did experiments on himself to change behavior, he found that it took himself around 21 days to form a new habit. He wrote these experiences “These, and many other commonly observed phenomena tend to show that it requires a minimum of about 21 days for an old mental image to dissolve and a new one to jell.” In 1960, Dr. Maxwell Maltz launched a book called “Psycho-Cybernetics,” in this book he has written his thoughts on behavior changes. The book went viral all across the country and become popular – till now over 30 million copies have been sold – this situational observation has become accepted as fact. There are a lot of motivators and as more people like Zig Ziglar, Brian Tracy, Tony Robbins, and others recited Maltz’s story. But people forgot that he said “it takes a minimum of about 21 days” shortened it to, “It takes 21days to form a new habit.” And that’s how people began the common myth everywhere that it takes “21 days” to become automatic. It’s remarkable how often these timelines are quoted as statistical facts. It could be quite a dangerous lesson if the majority of people say something more often time, then every single one starts to believe it. It makes sense why the “21 days.” become popular among the people. It’s easy to keep in mind the time frame and short enough to be inspiring, but most important long enough to be believable. COMPANY OVERVIEW The growing rise of plastic products and plastic use, especially single use plastic, is becoming a graver concern by the day. Mounds of plastic are steadily turning into mountains of plastic wastes, while recycling and reusing industries are barely meeting the minimum requirement. Under immense pressure and serious environmental threat, the exhausted recycling industry is constantly in need of a breakthrough which would alleviate such growing concerns for everybody within the industry, and everyone in the world. With its innovative and practical approach to revamping used and discarded plastic products, BessTrade came in like a guardian angel in such difficult times. The story of its inception begins in 1975, when Ivo Besselsen started his first recycling company, Besiplast. A PVC recycling company ahead of its time, Besiplast became a symbol of knowledge. It was in 2008 that Ivo ventured into the recycling industry again, this time with BessTrade. The sole ambition and aim of BessTrade since its establishment has been to bring out the change generations have been waiting for: a healthy and booming environment. BessTrade has outlasted and outworked any and all the struggles that time and circumstance presented to it. BessTrade was founded by Mr. Ivo Besselsen and then later was enriched even more by its current CEO, Mr. Huib Van Gulik. While doing what the current

generations have counted on them to do, BessTrade is working very dedicatedly to have a strong contribution in healing the world for the coming generations. “The only waste is wasted material” is the belief BessTrade works with: for every waste is a solution and it can contribute to rather than take from the environment. They have crafted a simple but elegant solution to not only put the waste of the world to good use but also have used waste to literally shine in the world. They understand the responsibility they have upon themselves in this market and towards the world and it is awe-inspiring to see BessTrade doing the best in both worlds.

THE INCEPTION STORY Both Mr. Besselsen and Mr. Gulik began with an ideology that nothing really ever is a waste, it’s always about how one can make the best of someone else’s waste and every waste is an opportunity in disguise. BessTrade believes that everything and anything can be reused and/or recycled, the only question that remains is who is the customer. BessTrade saw the light of day in 2003, initially situated near the docks and harbors of Rotterdam and Antwerp. As the business expanded and soared, it had to shift its base of operations and everything else in 2019 to where it is situated today, Lelystad, Netherlands. Mr. Besselsen and Mr. Gulik made an excellent tag team duo. Their mindset and outlook was to believe and work as if everything was possible and that every opportunity could become something huge and everlasting. They used the shift to Leylstad to develop the warehouse as well as the sales office next to each other in a 7000 sq mtr plot of land. At BessTrade these two believe that if at all someone offers a product which they believe to be difficult or new, they see it as an interesting product and do everything to ascertain that how and if at all that product can be recycled. The motto of BessTrade is “Challenge us with your PVC scrap”. Initially, a number of companies in Europe that produced waste were apprehensive as that would incur more investment on their part. Mr. Besselsen and Mr. Gulik’s can-do attitude convinced all the companies that their waste was recyclable and will make a difference in the world that they will be able to feel. This attitude is what makes BessTrade a huge success. European companies were the biggest contributor/source of waste dispatch, thus, it was important to start good at home to make a difference in the world. So, with a lot of patience and growth with personnel, contacts, and machines that ensure recycling of PVC in the best way possible, they achieved their well deserved breakthrough.

THE ENTREPRENEURS BEHIND BESSTRADE Mr. Besselsen and Mr. Gurik are such skilled and innovative entrepreneurs that they aren’t dependent or even

reliant on technology to do their jobs. Both these wonderful entrepreneurs believe in the concept of ‘Talk and Travel’, if they feel like there is an opportunity for BessTrade anywhere in the world, they’re on their way to talk to this potential client regardless where they are located. They believe there can be a lot of miscommunication and in general multiple hindrances are present while making deals virtually, so they believe that going to the client in person can ease them in expressing what they exactly need and want while simultaneously assuring the client that BessTrade is responsible and credible as they have come from so far just to make a deal. Trust and faith building is crucial to BessTrade and this practice of meeting the clients in person helps establish a foundation which is very strong and can develop into a long lasting relationship. Mr. Besselsen and Mr. Gulik aren’t just great entrepreneurs but they are also great leaders for BessTrade. They have a positive office atmosphere which has made them approachable and accessible to the workers and employees of BessTrade. Anyone who has any issues about anything can easily talk to them by directly walking into their office. This transparency they’ve maintained

boosts employee morale and thus boosts productivity ensuring BessTrades success. Mr. Besselsen and Mr. Gulik are very aware of their competitors as well. They believe that they should rather learn from their competitors than fight them. This mindset has helped these two keep an edge over the whole industry. While everybody else tries to simply one up each other, BessTrade actually works and delivers substantial results. The focus of BessTrade has been the total range of polymers. They constantly evolve their methods and keep on endlessly innovating their functions. BessTrade believes it to be their responsibility to ensure whatever PVC scrap they have gets recycled completely and properly. This doesn’t only mean revamping but also extends to initial transporting, to processing and the trade of the recycled product as well.
