Caldwell JANUARY ISSUE #1

Hello Friends, This edition of the newsletter is to pass along some good news and some bad news.

Wednesday’s F2 Tornado CONTACT INFORMATION:

Senator Warren T. Daniel Legislative Office Bldg., Room 411 300 N. Salisbury St. Raleigh, NC 27603-5925 Email: warren.daniel@ncleg.net Phone: 919-715-7823 Fax: 919-754-3265

First the bad news… As you know, Burke and Rutherford had a terrible visitor Wednesday night that left behind about $31.4 million in damage. (A news outlet in San Diego, CA even mentioned this F2 tornado.) According to the Burke County authorities, 34 structures were completely destroyed and another 41 suffered major damage. Thursday morning, my office began getting updates as assessment of the damage was taking place. I want to thank Sheriff Whisenant for briefing me on the initial action the county had taken to help those that were put out of their homes and to make sure that Emergency Management teams could get in the area to make assessments. I also want to thank Fire Marshal Mark Pitts for his work coordinating the relief and recovery efforts; and Chairman Abele and Manager Steen of the county in organizing road-clearing and debris removal. After consulting with these folks, Rep. Blackwell and I requested that the Governor move with all speed to give a state-level disaster declaration so that NCDOT can go in and help the County with debris removal and so individual aid can be applied for. (That letter in included on page 2.)

District Office of Sen. Warren Daniel 348 Harper Avenue NW Lenoir, NC 28645 Email: senwarrendaniel@bellsouth.net Phone: 828-754-9335 Fax 828-754-9335 (Please call before faxing)

Now for good news… After reading the News-Herald the last two days, I am very proud of the citizens in Burke County! Many charities and churches immediately pitched in and are helping many families. (See Julie Chang’s article: http://bit.ly/Azbyul). If you haven’t read this article by Sharon McBrayer and Cheryl Shuffler, http://bit.ly/ziIxkc, you missed a good article recounting experiences from Wednesday. It is wonderful news that there was no loss of life and only minor injuries were reported. See the side bars for more good news.

Burke Economic News Bryan Steen, and the Burke County Economic Development , Inc recently released a summary of 2011 economic development projects. 2011 was a great year for economic development in Burke. In all, over $65 million was invested in new and existing businesses, such as: Geiger/Herman Miller; Ice River Springs; Michelle’s Bakery; Ekornes; Caterpllar, Case Farms; and American Roller Bearing. These companies should add about 487 new jobs- or about $14.6 million in new annual payroll. The $65 million was from new investment. Only $5.4 million in grant funds were used to invest in these companies. Great job, Bryan Steen and Scott Darnell in helping bring these success stories to Burke County.
