Fall Semester [2011] Architectual Design: Methods and Typologies
Housing as Spirit of Place Exterior Phase My first Architectural Design Studio was concerned with the design of a residential building. In specific; a villa tailored to fit the needs of a family of 4 members, in Jabal Al Weibdeh, Amman - Jordan. The Design emphasises on behavioral, environmental and aesthetic variables specific to how a house turns into a home from my point of view. The most important aspect being the aesthetic one, as I tried to incorporate already present and added greenery to connect the inhabitants of the Villa to their natural surroundings, making the villa a sort of extension of the surroundings in which it is situated. I distributed the functions in a way to create a unique experience in each room. Moreover, the entire project is rotated at an angle that provides the best view of Amman’s Citadel. Housing as Spirit of Place Interior Phase After designing the villa as a whole, it was time to tendor to the individual experience in some of the rooms of the villa. Two Rooms were chosen for this purpose; A bedroom and the Kitchen.

The Design process started with designing a wall paper for the bedroom (Shown to the right). The wall paper design was inspired by Silhouettes of many people in different postures, each one unique by itself. This was followed by creating a Mood Board to convey the experience to be felt in this room, and then moving on to the drawings that were accomanied by a 1:20 model. The project gave way to my begining to tendoring to the details of future projects as the details make up the project as much as the whole. All Images are drawn technically and rendered digitally.

I started the design process by creating a Mood Board to convey the experience to be felt in the kitchen, choosing a suitable kitchen style and a colour palette. The style I chose was the Transitional kitchen style, which combines contemporary and traditional features to create an updated look; a culmination of the design’s past and present that fit the visual palette. It is a mixture of both man-made and natural materials intended to create an eclectic kitchen design. The colour palette consists of warm colours that are friendly and inviting as well as stimulating and exciting.

Spring Semester [2012] Design of commercial buildings
a place of tastes In this project, my main goal was to domesticate commercialism. It is a mixed-use commercial building that includes workshops, an art gallery, retail shops, a restaurant, and a library café, in addition to the parking spaces required. These aspects were all combined with the historical value of the Citadel area in Amman. Thus it’s called a ‘place of tastes,’ as it combines different aspects that appeal to different layers of the community. My design approach was to create an interactive open space enclosed by the functions required, which can be accessed from the main street, the parking lot, and the Citadel area. The gallery provides a transparent portal to the main courtyard. Additionally, a green fence was designed to encircle the project, which provides an inviting feeling while still regulating entrances to the project. After dividing the functions and working on their architectural planning, a second part of the project was to design the restaurant’s interior space. I named the restaurant “Cornerat”, for each corner had its own ambiance. After designing the restaurant I found the language I wanted to continue my project in, so I worked outwards to reach out to the entire project. This was reflected on the facades and the custom designed inner spaces and functions. All Images are drawn technically and rendered digitally.

Fall Semester [2012] design of sustainable buildings

With the ever rising oil price and the ever worsening traffic, bus stops should be an indispensable part in the daily schedule of university commuters. They should be available and comfortable as well as solar energy collectors to benefit the community within which they are located. The course aims to provide students with a sustainable thinking pattern which gives us understanding of the physical environment with a focus on climate and energy sources. My design approach was to rely on inspirational object from the actual site of the university; the watermill. I took three of the blades forming its structure and used them to come up with my bus stop module. As another inspiration, I looked into a project called “Brood� by Japanese architect Hiroshi Sambuishi and took inspiration from his idea to arrange louvers in a way to collect rainwater and protect from the direct sun.

My sustainable design approach started with the idea of placing the administrative functions of the library together in one core, and the reading functions together in another, to sustain the spacing and facilitate accessibility. I continued to work with my bus stop module, altering it in some ways to serve my purpose. And as an inspiration, Richard Mayer’s Jubilee Church served as a perfect example for how the form can be planned and how it can incorporate sustainable design features like its white sustainable concrete blocks; things I integrated in my design. In addition to environmental sustainability factors, I also focused on social sustainability: how to improve the quality of life of library commuters through raising social awareness by introducing students to sustainability factors. This is why I decided to integrate and expose the water harvesting system, and incorporate photovoltaic cells on the southern façade to optimize solar energy harvesting while still maintaining their visually appeal. I also employed the sustainable concrete blocks designed by Richard Mayer.

Spring Semester [2013] Tourist Facilities Design
Hotel Resort & Spa Design The entire semester was devoted to the design of two projects.
The cource aimed for the students to comprehend the essence of the tourists architecture, to explore the past and the base of this typology, through context, while considering the spatial and formal qualities,and the structural, functional, and environmental aspects of the design process. In this projects, one was asked to design a luxury Resort /Hotel (2 to 4 stories) situated in Aqaba in the resort tourist zone of the city, featuring rugged hills and dramatic coastal views. The architecture will be sensitive to the location, to the environment, to the ecology, to exploit the dramatic views on one hand, and will be an enhancement to the natural beauty of the site, will connect the culture and place, and will create sustainable identity on the other hand.

In this world, people need to step it down a notch and take some time out for themselves. I need to provide them with a place for rest and repair, a place to escape the strains of modern life, to chill out and relax.

The spa extends out to reach the entire resort area and have it within easy reach; which is why I chose an L shaped design so it’ll allow the functions to extend all over the project. Addition of therapeutic pools all around the resort, in addition to creating courtyards to improve air circulation and provide aesthetic value.

Spring Semester [2013] Tourist Facilities Design
Architect's pavilion design The architectural challenge of this project is to design a Pavilion for a famous architecture Brand to express and promote their image, in addition to add value to their office in Amman. The building comprises of a commercial store and an exhibition of their work , with accompanying utilities. Two major spaces serve as the core of the pavilion for visitors. They are designated store and museum. They can be partly interchangeable and flexible in function. A small administration, reception, cashiers with private utilities to manage the building in addition to parking for twenty cars is required.

Alvaro Siza (born 1933) is one of the best known Portuguese architects of the 20th century. Siza’s architecture is strongly rooted in the modern movement but incorporates a subjective approach to concept and design, seeking alternative interpretations of modernism.

Siza had main aspects which he considered in each of his designs. The main three that were intreging to me were: 1. Building to the Site
- Placeless Architecture results from the dominant trend of flattening out a site in order to build upon - Terracing to receive a building
2. Local Light
- Sensitive adaptation of local light - Interior surfaces can be rooted to the external regional environment through the play of local light spectrum across its surface.
3. Ventilation
- the now dominant techniques of air conditioning removes the element of interaction between building and local environment and qualities of climate, season and time.
