You will leave this interactive workshop, focusing on Native American mascots and the global impacts of climate change, as a CHANGEMAKER! Your kids will be proud.
Lower School Literacy Step into a Lower School literacy classroom! Building a strong foundation of reading and writing is essential to a successful experience for our students. Learn about how we lay the foundation for literacy and cultivate students’ love for reading and writing in this interactive workshop.
Presentation: Literacy in the Upper School At Far Brook students are given all the tools to develop their literacy skills with teachers who are trained to use developmentally appropriate coaching techniques to help them become increasingly skilled readers and writers. Come learn how this approach helps motivate students to become lifelong readers and writers. Following the presentation literacy teachers will be available for Q and A.

Making Sense of Math in the Lower School The nature of the math tasks that students engage with in the classroom plays an important role in shaping how students think about and learn mathematics. Through interactive problem-solving, we will explore the underlying principles that inform how math is taught in the Lower School at Far Brook.
Presentation: Math in the Upper School At Far Brook, math teaching is based on research that critical thinking, analysis, and communicating about thinking processes result in excellence in student performance in contemporary math. Following the presentation, Upper School math teachers will be available for Q and A.
Walk Like a Mathematician…. Are you ready to Walk Like a Mathematician? Explore distance versus time graphs with motion detectors! In this experiential learning activity, a motion detector will track your movement and plot it on a graph. Test your skills at matching a pre-plotted graph and Walk the Line.
She Blinded Me with SCIENCE Join us in the Science Lab for an interactive lab experience. Investigate how rising levels of carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere impact our lakes, rivers, estuaries, and oceans. In this lab, you will make solutions to represent different bodies of water. You will then bubble carbon dioxide through each solution and, with the help of a universal pH indicator, see how the pH of each solution changes as more carbon dioxide is added. Will each body of water change in the same way upon the addition of carbon dioxide?
Windmill Engineering Join us in the woodshop to experience Far Brook’s hands on and interactive approach to engineering design. During this workshop we will learn about the 3D modeling process and test the efficiency of different wind turbine designs. Using a fan, we will simulate wind and use a voltmeter to determine the amount of electricity generated by each design.
Dash: Using Robots to Extend Everyday Learning Come meet Dash, a small robot with a big personality! Take on the challenge of using a block-based coding language to help Dash learn some basic geometry. Using computational thinking, you will apply your understanding of shapes and computer science concepts to program Dash to draw a variety of polygons. This is a hands-on, exploratory activity in which you will get to experience first-hand how your child problem solves in technology class. *All are welcome, even if your geometry knowledge is a bit rusty or you have never coded before! Also, please be prepared to work on the floor.
Inside/Outside Portraits Who do you see when you look in the mirror? Come experience a unique self-portrait exercise where you will not only use an actual mirror to study your features, but also search within yourself to express your inner identities. Oh Music, Sweet Music…. A multi-sensory approach that integrates kinesthetic activities with aural, visual, and vocal skills is the core of our music program. This interactive workshop will introduce a concept through a series of activities - a circle dance, percussion accompaniments, and problem-solving games - all of which serve to deepen learning while also building community.
Finding Ensemble In a brief taste of what makes Theatre such an active “team sport with no opposing team,” we will be playing a series of theatre games and ensemble-building exercises that can help to create the beginnings of an interactively creative performance ensemble.
