The series contains the following words that speak of identity, memories, hope, love, longing, and struggle:
I am my language, I am a fine piece of poetry... two... ten, this is my language...
I am from there and I have memories
On this earth there is something worth living for
Your eyes are a painful thorn in the heart, but I worship them
Your breeze is amber, your land is sugar, and I love you the most
I yearn for the bread of my mother, her coffee, and her touch
When a wheat ear dies, it fills the valley with grains
The arresting room will not remain, nor will the chains
I am from there, I am from here I am neither there, nor here
The butterfly effect is not seen, and will not disappear
One day, I shall become a bird and create my existence from nothing
I don’t want this poem to never end
I hope I was successful in combining the powerful words of Darwish with the art of Arabic calligraphy, geometric patterns, and the art of Palestinian embroidery in the concept of the Mu’alaqaat. I am very pleased and honored that the embroidered series will have a home at Darwish Museum. It is my gift to this place that will continue to preserve the memories of Darwish for future generations. Fayeq Oweis
In the summer of 2008, I went to the office of Mahmoud Darwish in the Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah to drop off a poster of the “Edward Said Mural” that I co-designed at San Francisco State University and used one of Darwish’s verses: I am from there, I am from here. Unfortunately, he passed away without seeing it, so I decided to work on this series as a tribute to him. The idea was to combine Darwish’s words with the art of Arabic Calligraphy and geometric patterns in the form of Mu’alaqaat. I exhibited the first version of these designs through digital prints on fabrics at the opening celebration of Al-Barweh Garden - Memorial and Museum of Mahmoud Darwish Museum in Ramallah on March 13, 2012. After my mother passed away, I added another dimension to this series, to have them implemented in embroidery which I am dedicating to her memories. This collection is inspired by Darwish’s words: I am my language and I am a piece of fine poetry, a Hanging Poem, two of them, ten of them, .. this is my language, so I chose 10 verses and designed them in the form of “Hanging Poems” or what is known in Arabic as Mu’alaqaat, the fine pieces of poetry that date back to pre-Islamic times. I also added two additional pieces, the inspiring verse and one from his latest poems: I do not want this poem to never end. The collection includes some of the well known verses of Mahmoud Darwish and were designed in Square Kufic style of Arabic calligraphy, a script that is strong, bold, and powerful to match the power of Darwish’s words. It is probably a similar script that the original Mu’alaqaat were written in 2000 years ago. I designed them in geometric patterns to indicate the power of these words, they can be repeated indefinitely. The embroidered set was implemented by Palestinian refugee women at the Center of Women Programs in Baq’a Refugee camp in Jordan. Another set, was produced digitally with embroidery pattern and printed on Canvas.
