MENTEE
As part of the mentorship pragram by Atelier Red+Black, I learnt important aspects of professional practice in Australia namely different stages of a buidling project, process for obtaining Council permit/Town planning, BCA requirements, an architect’s registration process and importance of a short/long term career strategy and goals. As a group of six female graduate architects, we remain in touch and support each other, while advocating for gender equity within the profession through social media and blog posts. I also set up the Atelier Mentorship blog under the guidance of principal architects, Michael Smith and Sonia Sarangi.

CONNECTING TUNNEL INDIA INTERNATIONAL JEWELERY SHOW Mumbai, India Designed for Atelier Anonyme Design
Being a jewelery show, the connecting tunnel drew inspiration from the movement of a snake chain. For the ease of construction, the structure was designed as a modular system of two unique units. Each consists of PVC pipes arranged in a hyperbolic paraboloid geometry. The units mirror and repeat through the length of the tunnel and thus the ‘snaky-twisted’ rhythm is emulated. The L-shaped lines define the otherwise rectilinear form of the space and stand in contrast to the curved pipes. The lights celebrate the contrast between the linear motion and the freeform. These blue lights increase the spatial quality and set the ambience of the long rectilinear space.

PHOTOMORPHIA A COUNSELING CENTRE & MULTIFAITH CHAPEL UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE, PARKVILLE THESIS Supervisor: Dennis Prior
The premise of the thesis studio was to take the work of an Australian artist as inspiration to develop a unique project. My chosen artist, Louise Hearman’s inspiration lay in the relationship between light, time and objects. In her words she describes, ”Light falls on certain things in a certain way sometimes and suddenly makes them significant. That is what motivates me to make paintings.” Thus, ‘Photomorphia’ or ‘changing light’ explores the phenomena of changing light conditions over different seasons and their interaction with certain materials. The function of the building was narrowed down to a Counseling and Spiritual centre for the University of Melbourne, set in the picturesque System Garden. Geometry of light over the seasons was mapped and openings were designed such that the summer opening

would block the winter, spring and autumn sun. Thus, light could enter a certain opening only at particular times. The materials associated with each season were changed so that the perception of space would constantly change through the year. The counseling space faces the greens and is elevated over a mesh of copper columns providing a spiritual experience as soon as one nears the building. The elevated counseling space ensures privacy and provides a variety of controlled views. The entrance to the multifaith chapel is open and bright encouraging visitors to step in. The interior roof form ensures different sections, clad in gold, copper and blue metal, light up differently in each season symbolising the harmonious coexistence of different faiths.

ARTICULATED TIMBER GROUND A PAVILION AT MELBOURNE SCHOOL OF DESIGN STUDIO E Tutors: Paul Loh, David Leggett
-Addresses circulation
Joints #3 Packers, remove stagger
With the design of the new building for the Melbourne School of Design, arose an opportunity for a pavilion to be constructed by students in its precinct.
The form of Articulated timber ground, the scheme that finally got built, was derived from the existing circulation pattern of the site, visual transparency and ergonomical requirements. A ruled geometry allowed the overall The constraints were of a 6mx6m curved form to be built out of only size and material to be used; struc- straight lines. tural plywood. 14 students produced 140 ideas to start with. These were narrowed down, worked upon and the scheme to be built was chosen by competition. The studio developed a workflow that best suited our design to production practice.
AR
The form was scripted using grasshopper and fabricated with CNC router. Rapid prototyping allowed testing of ideas and constant back and forth between digital modelling, fabrication and making design decisions to feed back into the digital model. As a result, each construction detail and component had an impact on the overall form. Other form influencing analysis included sun and wind studies for orientation, and strength tests to determine the best suited material, components and form. Following a nomenclature eased communication and final assembly. Sanding and routing of individual pieces were done manually for final finish before assembling the chunks together. The chunks were designed based on OH&S and transportation requirements. These were then assembled together on site.

METASTASIS A FLOATING THEATRE AT DOCKLANDS STUDIO D Tutors: Charity Edwards, Tania Davidge
Melbourne’s Docklands has long been criticised for its inhumane scale and lack of connection with the water despite its obvious abundance. Metastasis, a theatre at the docklands is a utopic vision to address the problem. The theatre revolves around the concept of malleabality and distortion of light and shadow. Like a living creature, it dwells in the water basin and plugs onto various sites at different times transforming not only the form but also its use.
Clad in contrasting materials depicting light and shadow, the building is always mysterious and changing the angle of light that it reflects. At night it lends a warm glow and acts as a beacon, a poetic lighthouse in the Docklands. The theatre breaks down into five buildings: two smaller theatres, a cinema, a ballroom and the stage floats away to become a spectacle for an outdoor theatre with the Bolte Bridge as the backdrop. The pieces are pulled together and apart with the help of a tug boat. The architecture thus celebrates its fluid site.

SUBMERGED REVERIE ST KILDA PIER, MELBOURNE STUDIO C Tutor: Tommy Joo
A transitional retreat takes one from ‘grounded’ reality into an alternate one. The start of the journey is marked by walking onto a wooden pier directed towards the sea. The built form takes its cue from this pier and becomes a plug on. As one disconnects from the real world and makes their way deeper into the retreat, into the water, they experience different spatial phenomena through the daily activities of cooking, eating, bathing and sleeping. The spaces speak a subconcious language. Echo, diffused sounds, filtered light through the water and glimpses of the pier into the spaces below create an an atmosphere of reverie.
The journey back to reality experiences previously visited spa es rom a different perspective of one’s own remnants in the space suggesting a cycle. One steps out at the same spot entered from, through another door, another path, emerging enlightened to a new world.
FROZEN FABRIC A COFFEE TABLE Digital Furniture Fabrication
Digital fabrication is perceived to produce flawless results. This project aims to challenge this notion by using digital fabrication technique to produce a structure with aesthetic qualities that lie between control and the lack of. Casting plaster into fabric, controlled between CNC routed ply pieces was the chosen process for exploration. The resultant cast sees unique aesthetics mimicing the fabric texture, folds and contours in the desired profile. No two casts are the same.

AA STUDIO INTERIORS NEW DELHI, INDIA
Designing one’s own workplace gives freedom to architects and designers to experiment with new ideas and express their personalities. The interiors of AA studio is thus a reflection of their multidisciplinary practice. The design became an eclectic mix of ideas, materials and colours. As a fresh undergraduate architect, I acquired knowledge through directly being involved in the making processes, design documentation, procurement of materials and site supervision. Under the guidance of the principal architect, I designed the Jenga table, scale railing, concrete planters, copper lights and overall flooring layout which was a mixture of local ‘kota’ stone and artificial grass. The copper needed to be precisely bent for the desired effect. This was the challenging part of documentation and execution. I also undertook all graphic work that needed to be published in the Indian design magazine ‘Inside-Outside’, like the plan on this page. Other than drawings, I photographed the interiors which was published as well.
