Louis H. Sullivan National Farmers’ Bank 101 North Cedar Avenue, Owatonna
The year was 1906. The National Farmers’ Bank — the largest bank in the city — had outgrown its offices on the first floor of a 40-year-old building in downtown Owatonna. Carl Bennett, then vice president of the bank, commissioned famed architect Louis H. Sullivan to design a “true and lasting work of art” to be the home of the bank. Construction on the new bank in Owatonna — the first of Sullivan’s “jewel boxes” — began in April 1907 and was completed in 1908. The red brick structure with green terra cotta bands features two large arches displaying stained glass windows designed by Louis J. Millet. Inside are several murals by Oskar Gross and a “poem of colors,” featuring more than 200 shades, primarily blues and greens, intricate terra cotta and gold-leaf detailing. On Jan. 7, 1976, the building was recognized as a National Historic Landmark for its architectural significance. The United States Postal Service commemorated the building in 1981, putting the image of the bank on a postage stamp.

The people of Owatonna didn’t need WCCO’s Amelia Santaniello to tell them what they already knew… but they didn’t stop them from making sure that Old Town Bagels (OTB) got the recognition they deserved. “I didn’t think we had a shot,” Stacy Wilson says, regarding learning that her and husband Mark’s restaurant was in the running for WCCO 4 News Best of Minnesota – Best Bagel Shop. OTB on North Cedar Avenue was up against some big names in the Twin Cities, as well as a college favorite in Northfield and Mankato. But in August 2017, Wilson received the call that they had won. “I don’t really know how that happened!”
Stacy Wilson has no qualms giving much of the menu credit to the Satterlunds, who were able to introduce the town of Owatonna to freshly baked bagels every day with a plethora of topping options, but she is quite proud of the modern updates they brought to the table.
Two years into the business and a “Best of” honor must mean the Wilsons are doing something right, especially considering once upon a time they “didn’t know a thing about making a bagel.”
“Every day he gets a Kitchen Sink bagel with butter,” Stacy Wilson laughs with Johnson. “Sometimes we have it ready for him before we open!” “Except on Saturdays,” Mark Wilson adds. “Then he treats himself to an egg and cheese on his bagel.”
After roughly 25 years in big retail, the Wilson family came to a fork in the road when Mark Wilson found himself out of work in 2015. That’s when they heard word that the former owners of OTB, Jim and Gretchen Satterlund, were looking to sell their iconic bagel shop. Though it was far different from anything they had done before, Stacy Wilson described it as a “leap of faith” when they purchased the store that November. “I didn’t know anything about bagels,” Stacy Wilson tells Santaniello during their spotlight interview. “I knew you could buy them in the store.” The family quickly learned the intensity of supplying the public with fresh, preservative-free bagels, Monday through Saturday. The small kitchen has proven to be the busiest on Monday and Tuesday, while they recover from the weekend according to Stacy Wilson. “It’s almost a 24-hour operation,” she states. “We are preparing for the next day until about 10 p.m. or midnight, and then our baker arrives at 2 or 3 a.m.” All those special bagels need something extra special to go with it, of course, leading to the restaurant going through 120 pounds of cream cheese each week. It is no ordinary cream cheese, however, but uniquely flavored spreads also made in house. “Sometimes we are up to our elbows in cream cheese,” Stacy Wilson laughs. “Literally!” With extensive training from the Satterlunds, the Wilsons were able to keep OTB as is, with just a few updates they introduced to help bring the restaurant into the Cyber Age.
Specifically, the Wilsons installed a new point of sale system (POS) to the restaurant. Besides handling ordinary transactions, the POS is able to keep track of who exactly their customers are. Pete Johnson, for example, will be waiting outside OTB every day when the Wilsons unlock the door.
“Fifty percent of our customers are repeat customers. Every day. That’s not common for a restaurant,” Stacy Wilson explains. With the perfect downtown location, the bagel shop is frequented by downtown workers who continue to fill the store to the brim over the lunch hour. “They become more than our customers, they become our friends who we know by name.” Because of the large lunch rush, the Wilsons also brought online ordering to the OTB world, allowing people to order and pay online, bypass the line out the door, and pick up their lunch without the wait. The service is something anyone with a 30 minute lunch break can appreciate. Last but not least, OTB was officially introduced to the social media world. The OTB Facebook page keeps their fans updated on food specials (both daily and for events), soups of the day, and job openings. Stacy Wilson jokes that the biggest impact Facebook has had is freeing up the phone lines, but the online voters who made sure OTB was put on the map with WCCO’s “Best Of” may beg to differ. It’s no secret that the location of OTB is small, but it hasn’t kept the Wilsons from dreaming big. “Expanding has proven difficult,” Stacy Wilson states. “But there are still possibilities!” While the Wilsons did purchase the Master’s Bar and Grill in 2017, the new seasonal project doesn’t mean less time and dedication to the new state favorite.“We’re not looking to go anywhere,” Mark Wilson says. “Everyone thinks it would always be great to own a ‘Mom ‘n Pop’ shop downtown,” Stacy Wilson adds. “And that’s what we’re doing.”

Horizons of Health Care
As Steele County has grown, so has the need for quality health care for its residents and those in surrounding communities. Fortunately, the cooperation between the Owatonna Hospital, part of Allina Health, and Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna has ensured quality health care in the community. Owatonna Hospital The Owatonna Hospital’s new facility opened its doors in 2009, bringing a new patient care experience to Steele County. Owatonna Hospital has served the local community since 1901, when it was founded to serve a city of 5,000. Today, the hospital has grown to meet the needs of more than 26,000 Owatonna residents as well as the Steele County area. The current facility features 43 beds and employs more than 300. Owatonna Hospital offers inpatient and outpatient orthopedic, general, urology, plastic, ENT and ophthalmologic surgical services; inpatient mental health; birthing center; emergency medicine; and rehabilitation services through Courage Kenny® Rehabilitation Institute. The Joint Commission accredits Owatonna Hospital. The two-story hospital, connected to Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna is located at 2250 NW 26th St. Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna In 1948, two medical pioneers — Dr. Albert J. Olson and Dr. Franklin C. Anderson — started the Owatonna Clinic on the principle that the physician serves the community both in the preservation and the restoration of good health. For the past 60-plus years, the clinic has grown from its original office on Main Street to its current location on the 26th Street. In 1997, the clinic joined Mayo Clinic Health System. In 2011, the Owatonna Clinic changed its name to Mayo Clinic Health System. The name change is part of a broader effort to bring even more of Mayo Clinic to patients locally. Mayo Clinic Health System has become a comprehensive medical clinic offering outpatient and specialty services. The staff includes a variety of specialty fields, including family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrician/gynecology, dermatology and many others.

The clinic also offers comprehensive laboratory, diagnostic, pain management and infusion therapy services. Mayo Clinic Health System also offers a full-service optical shop. Mayo also operates a facility at 405 E. Main in Blooming Prairie, which is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays, with pharmacy hours from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Education
The founders and settlers of Steele County brought with them certain cultural traditions that were as real and perhaps as important as the houses and stores they constructed. One of their first priorities was education. From the first public school classes conducted in a crude pole and branchcovered structure in the summer of 1855 to the wide variety of public and private educational facilities and resources available today, Steele County has a long history of offering the finest education to all ages.
Students will make choices about how they complete state graduation requirements as a part of their projects. Some work will be done partially online while other experiences will be in the community, at a local business or on a college campus.
Steele County takes prides in its schools, the achievements of its students and the many opportunities its students have that help them be prepared for a successful career and to become a positive and contributing members of society.
For more information, see the website at www.technicalacademies.org.

The academy will employ licensed teachers and bring hands-on, project-based experiential learning to students. The project-based public charter school will focus on career and technical schools. Students will create projects based on their own interests.

Communities of Faith
Throughout the years, various communities of faith have found a home in Steele County. Despite the formation of various denominational groups, the early settlers were remarkably tolerant of other religious beliefs and cooperative with one another. That sense of tolerance and cooperation remains a hallmark of Steele County today as both established churches and new faith communities continue to flourish.
