Agriculture
Waseca County sits squarely in the heart of some of the nation’s richest farmland as agriculture remains an integral part of life in the region.
While corn and soybeans remain the prominent cash crop in the county, Midwest Extraction launched an innovative, indoor production facility in the city of Waseca during 2018, originally focused on hemp production, distribution and sales, and now focused on cannabis. Since opening, the business has expanded to an extraction center in a portion of the former Quad Graphics building along with adding a CBD storefront in Waseca and other area locations.
Agri-businesses have been major employers and led the way in both economic and innovative ways. Conagra (Birds Eye) remains one of the country’s major frozen vegetable producers, as well as a manufacturer of specialty dairy food ingredients, All American Foods. And one of the state’s largest ethanol plants, Guardian Energy, is located between the cities of Waseca and Janesville just off Highway 14.
Waseca is the home of the University of Minnesota’s Southern Research and Outreach
Center, a rich part of the county’s agricultural significance.
In 1999, the research facility -- which began as the Southeast Demonstration Farm and Experiment Station, took the name the Southern Research and Outreach Center (SROC), now part of the University of Minnesota’s College of Food Agricultural and Natural Sciences (CFANS). Today, 926 acres are dedicated to research, outreach and extension activities.
In the center’s early years, increased agricultural production was of paramount importance and the focus of most of the facility’s activities. While efficient and effective production practices remain a major focus of the research, education and outreach programs at the SROC, the development of new technologies and practices that have positive impacts on food production systems, human health, renewable energy and the environment. explore. discover. connect.

MAKE A Splash
Waseca’s prized lakes welcome visitors at both the east and west ends of town and offer ample opportunity for water sports, fishing, picnics or a quiet walk. Clear Lake, the large 652-acre lake on the east entrance to Waseca, is the place to go for fishing, boating, water skiing, sailing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. One of Clear Lake’s highlights is a bike trail loved by walkers, joggers and bikers looking for fresh air and exercise. The trail hugs the lake’s shoreline before connecting to trails within the city.
Waseca Community Education teamed up with the city’s Parks and Recreation Department in 2018 to offer rental equipment at Clear Lake. Residents and visitors are able to rent yard games, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards or mountain bikes for trail rides. Rentals are available Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. at the Clear Lake
Beach House from Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend.
Clear Lake is filled with walleye, northern pike, sunfish, perch and largemouth bass. In the winter, Clear Lake is home to a small city of ice fishing houses and snowmobile activities, including the Kruger Memorial snowmobile races each February.
On the west side of town is Loon Lake, a quiet 80-acre lake with an historic island. Loon Lake offers a perfect place to fish, canoe, watch wildlife or to picnic on the north side in the tree-filled park equipped with tables, playground equipment and a 2.2-mile walking path. Fish for bluegills, crappies, bass, northern pike and bullheads on Loon Lake.
A boat ramp is located on 10th Street Northwest and a fishing pier is within walking distance. Shoreline restoration projects have added native wildflowers and improved water quality and stabilized the shoreline of both lakes.

WASECA COUNTY Free Fair
The best summer party of the year is found at the Waseca County Free Fair in July – that’s when the fairgrounds come alive with music, food, animals, grandstand events, the midway and camaraderie.
Each year, the five-day fair begins with a ceremony at the county Veterans Memorial and often a Wednesday evening pork supper. Kids of all ages flock to the midway for carnival rides, games,
prizes and the much-desired fair food.
Local 4-H Club members bring their livestock, rabbits and dogs; they operate the 4-H food stand; enter their handmade clothing and work in the livestock barns. Residents from across the county continue the tradition of competition by bringing their best flowers and biggest vegetables, works of art and baked goods to compete for fair ribbons in dozens of categories.
July 10-14, 2024
Fair events include:
• Midway food, games and rides
• Beer garden
• Free musical performances
• Petting Zoo
• 4-H entries and food stand
• Creative arts
• Enduro Race
• Tractor Pull

• Bull Riding
• Booths, displays and more
Come to the fair for a summer break, meet your friends, stroll the Midway, ride the attractions and eat your favorite fair food.

WASECA Marching Classic
The 38th annual Waseca Marching Classic is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025. Waseca High School’s long history of instrumental musical excellence marches through town each September.
The Classic Parade steps off at noon in downtown Waseca. Thousands from across the region come to watch high school marching bands from Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota perform through the streets in competition. Spectators and participants display their school spirit and community pride.
Immediately following the parade, an awards ceremony is held at the Trowbridge Park Bandstand during which parade awards, the People’s Choice Award and Parade Sweepstakes, are presented.
The celebration continues at 5:30 p.m at the Waseca Junior-Senior High School Stadium. Participating bands and spectators enjoy an
afternoon and evening of field show routines. Participation awards are presented in each class along with specialty awards: Outstanding Drum Majors, Outstanding Horn Line, Outstanding Percussion, and Outstanding Auxiliary, the Herb Streitz Spirit Award, Field Sweepstakes and the Richard “Butch” Dufault Sweepstakes Award (parade and field).
Enjoy family entertainment at its best!
From its inception as part of the 1988 all-school reunion and community celebration, the Waseca Marching Classic band festival has grown to include a 100-unit parade, field show competition at Waseca Junior-Senior High School Stadium, music clinics for participating bands and fireworks
to cap off the event, a favorite of band students.
The Waseca High School Marching Jays, as hosts, perform but do not compete.
The Marching Classic is sponsored by Waseca Classic, Inc. and is the combined effort of the Waseca Band Boosters, Waseca Public Schools, the City of Waseca, Waseca Area Chamber of Commerce, and countless volunteers. Information is available at wasecamarchingclassic.com and on Facebook at Waseca Marching Classic, Inc.
