HISTORIC FARIBAULT Rich in history, vibrant, with quaint shops, a variety of restaurants and friendly faces all welcome you to historic downtown Faribault.
Downtown Faribault boasts 24 commercial properties on the National Register of Historic Places including the entire 200 block. Proud building owners have been restoring and renovating
buildings to keep pace with the modern needs while honoring the architecture of the 1880’s. For shopping, business, coffee with friends, a night out on the town, community theater or a stroll through time - Downtown Faribault is brimming with opportunity.
FAribault is regarded as one of the most historic communities in minnesota.
ATTRACTIONS Faribault Woolen Mills (Tours on Thursday’s) For many generations, the Faribault Woolen Mill Company has grown and thrived as a business. Since 1865, the year Lincoln died and the Civil War ended, the Woolen Mill has played a part in history, whether it’s blankets traveled in covered wagons with the frontier movement West, covering our troops during the war years, or providing warmth for those in need, Faribault blankets and woolen products have been woven into the fabric of American history. The Woolen Mill retail store offers Faribault
blankets, throws, scarves and accessories, as well as mill seconds and special runs. Cathedral of Our Merciful Saviour (Tours Available) The “cathedral idea” was in the air at the time Henry Benjamin Whipple became Minnesota’s first Episcopal bishop in 1859. According to Whipple, this was the first Episcopal church in the US to be built as a cathedral. Built 1862–1869, it is the oldest cathedral in Minnesota. The architect was James Renwick, Jr., who also designed St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and the Smithsonian Institution Building in Washington, D.C.

It’s mission is to “collect, preserve, and interpret the history of Rice County and the State of Minnesota.” The museum contains a collection of objects, images and artifacts, ranging from pre-history to present day. Alexander Faribault House (Tours Available) The Alexander Faribault House, built in 1853, was the first wood-frame house built in Rice County, Minnesota. It was built by fur trader Alexander Faribault in the Greek Revival style. Faribault: Home of the Tilt-A-Whirl Invented by Herbert Sellner in 1926, the Tilt-A-Whirl: is one of the best-known flat rides, designed for commercial use at amusement parks, fairs and carnivals, in which it is commonly found. A fully-restored “car” sits downtown for photo-ops and relaxing with a cup of coffee or sandwich. Shattuck – St. Mary’s School In 1858, The Rev. Dr. James Lloyd Breck established the Episcopal mission school and seminary from which ShattuckSt. Mary’s School has developed and prospered. In the last decade, SSM has attracted national attention in areas the 507-334-4381 or 800-653-2354
school refers to as “Centers of Excellence,” namely ice hockey, soccer, figure skating, golf, and the arts. The Caves of Faribault In 1854 a German immigrant named Gottfried Fleckenstein began using the natural sandstone caves along the Straight River for brewing and storing beer. The largest natural cave (still in use today) was enlarged in 1936, then entirely new caves were hand hewn from the sandstone rock beginning in 1938. Home of Americas first cave-aged Blue Cheese - St. Petes Select and Amablu. Contact them at (507) 334-5260 or online at www.cavesoffaribault.com Minnesota State Academies for the Deaf & Blind Minnesota became a state on May 11, 1858. In that year, during the session of the first state legislature, definite action was taken looking toward the establishment of a school for the deaf children of Minnesota. The Honorable George E. Skinner, one of Faribault’s representatives in the state legislature, asked that a “deaf and dumb asylum” be located in Faribault. The legislature decided that this institution should be located in Faribault if the citizens of the town would provide 40 acres of land within two miles of town for a site. The academies are still in operation today and are highly respected centers of education. Donahue’s Greenhouse Donahue’s has over one hundred thirty varieties of climbing Clematis vines. It is the most complete list anywhere. Donahues Spring retail store is unbelievable. While it might be raining (snowing!) outside, the amazing colors inside is remarkable to witness first hand. 420 10th Street SW, 507-334-7156 www.donahuesclematis.com Ivan Whillock Woodcarving Studio Ivan Whillock did his first wood carvings at the age of twelve in his father’s furniture shop. He received his art degree in 1959 and has studied with sculptor Angel Lillo, and master carver Eduardo Gutierrez. Ivan’s wood sculpture, bronze statues, and reliefs can be found in churches, businesses and private collections around the world. 122 1st Avenue NE, 507-339-0336 www.whillock.com
