NHS seniors honor staff : Remembering the ones with great influence By Terri Lenz tlenz@thekenyonleader In a candlelight ceremony on the evening of May 3, 24 new members were inducted into the Kenyon-Wanamingo National Honor Society as standing members looked on. Senior NHS students occupied the seats of honor on the auditorium stage. The chapter is led this school year by the following officers: President Natalie Hildebrandt, Vice-President Mariah Peterson, Secretary Kelsey Noah and Treasurer Courtney Knott. They are led by advisor Rich Kincaid. Retiring teacher Randy Hockinson provided the keynote speech, posing the timeless questions: Who are you? Why are you here? What are you going to do about it? Most influential A highlight of the NHS induction ceremony is the tradition of senior members each honoring their most influential staff member in a short speech. A total of 22 seniors shared the following memories and reflections. Mara Quam chose Band teacher Claire Larson. A clarinet, oboe and saxophone player, Quam said the continued support and encouragement from Larson helped her to stick with, and excel, in band. She said Larson helped her to become a wellrounded person, adding that the influential teacher can bring out the musician in anyone. High school vocal music teacher Stephanie Schumacher was honored by Courtney Knott, who said, “Something changed

he coaches three sports. He’s always involved and always at games, she said. Flom said Wieme is positive and never gives up on people, and added that she wants to be like him. Brandi Remold chose social studies teacher Dan Rechtzigel, and described how he once called her out for not listening in class and made her sit in the hallway. Remold said he made learning fun, is a great teacher and an amazing person. Ecology teacher Rich Kincaid was honored by Mariah Peterson. She said he inspired her to be assertive and not to just rely on others. She said Kincaid goes the extra mile and is more than a teacher; he is a friend. Gavin Roosen said history teacher and coach Randy K-W senior Gavin Roosen honored his Hockinson was influential and teacher and coach, Randy Hockinson, broadened his views, both inside at the National Honor Society induction and outside the classroom. His ceremony. Hockinson was also the biggest influence was as coach, keynote speaker for the event. (submitsaid Roosen, where Hockinson ted photo) showed him the importance of respect. Through him, Roosen reading could be fun, and not a said, he became more of a leader punishment. Peterson ended up than he ever thought he could as Kunesh’s second hour student be. Sam Breimhurst also aid; quite a turnaround for a girl who wasn’t going to read a book. honored Hockinson as being most influential, and said he Jacob Wieme, coach and elementary teacher, was selected promoted excellence and critical by Jonathon Dierks and Megan thinking. He understood when Senior Shelby Clawiter chose to honor Flom. Dierks said that as a foot- they didn’t reach the best, said Spanish teacher and coach Anna Bauer Breimhurst, but Hockinson alball coach, Wieme taught him as her most influential staff member the importance of teamwork and ways encouraged them to strive during the K-W National Honor Society for the best. how success was a team feat. induction ceremony. It’s a team effort Clawiter said she was at and you’ve got to work hard for first scared of Anderson, but life; part of the family, childhood it.” said he put her fears to rest Flom described Wieme as babysitter, four years of Spanish when he told her that one of her ever positive and encouraging. and helping coach basketball, brothers had sat in her same She went out for golf during too. sophomore year, and noted that desk. She said Anderson showed Natalie Hildebrandt said in eighth grade when Schumacher came to K-W. “ She said the choir director surrounds her students with positivity, asks about their dayto-day lives and really listens to their responses. Knott described Schumacher as ‘inspiring and compassionate.’ Three students selected Spanish teacher Anna Bauer, affectionately known as “Senora.” Shelby Clawiter said Bauer has the ability to make a difficult subject fun, and now Spanish is one of her favorite classes. Bauer was also a softball coach for her early on. Clawiter recognized her influential teacher’s passion for her work. ‘Possessing energy, positive spirit and a desire to live life to the fullest’ is the way Kasey Dummer described Bauer. The senior acknowledged that Bauer is woven into many areas of her

Bauer was a huge influence for her, both in and out of the classroom, adding that she stayed in Spanish because of Senora. Mia Peterson honored English teacher Rebecca Kunesh as being most influential. Peterson told how she and Kelsey Noah decided they would not read a book all of their freshman year, until Kunesh showed her

that he cared about each of his students and knew how to keep them engaged. He also knew the kind of people they were capable of being. Clawiter said she will always remember his huge and literal sense of humor. Noah admitted that she, too was scared at first of Anderson and that her brother had also had him in fourth grade. He was a big Minnesota Gophers fan, and she a die-hard Nebraska fan. They would go back and forth all year talking about games. Later, he kept an interest in her life and they would have conversations at the grocery store where she worked. Noah had the last word as she presented Anderson with a Nebraska T-shirt that evening. Kat Rechtzigel selected the duo of Kevin Anderson and teacher/spouse Mary Gail Anderson. She recalled reading with Mrs. Anderson and spoke about the day when her favorite electronic game toy was no longer allowed in school. Rechtzigel enjoyed writing in Mr. Anderson’s class, and will now pursue dairy journalism. “I cant’ wait to show the world everything you taught me,” Rechtzigel said. Emily Pliscott said during her freshman year she expected to learn class subjects, but it was Linda Lehman in the lunch line who taught her something she didn’t expect to learn. She watched Lehman put effort and kindness into every student, and learned that the way we treat other people is so very important. Victoria Clouse said that math teacher/team coach Karen Davidson showed her that some things in life do not come easy, but if you are diligent you will

get through it. Clouse described her as patient, willing and always there to help. Megan Groth also chose Davidson, and praised her for always having a positive attitude and a passion for teaching. Davidson doesn’t just teach math, but life skill she can use and take with her, Groth said. Algebra teacher Mark Moran was Madeline Patterson’s choice. She said he taught her that it’s OK to ask for help. In fact, she said, after getting a D on her first pre-algebra test, his patient persistence and availability helped her to do better. Patterson said she will remember their prank wars as well. Sydney Warner called Robin Breimhurst from the media center the ‘inspiration and light in my life.’ With a book in one hand and a cup of tea in the other, she is unstoppable, Warner said. Mary Hjermstad said elementary teacher Rhonda Thesing taught students life lessons, such as be kind and forgive other girls because they could become your closest friends. Hjermstad said Thesing genuinely cares about the success of her students. Ben Erickson said he did not have Jeff Wibben as a teacher, but he was truly influential as a running coach. Wibben taught him that you can always improve, and in order to improve running times at meets, you had to work hard and keep a positive attitude. Wibben made it a fun goal, Erickson said, and he will be taking that attitude with him.

You have walked a long way toward this goal.
