Career and Workforce Development: The Faribault Chamber Career Development effort is dedicated to meeting the future workforce needs of our business community. By working closely with employers and educators we help bridge the employment gap. This group assists with tours at local businesses, job shadow experiences, along with work-study and internships that offer employers a pipeline to future employees with practical and valuable experience. These opportunities offer students real world experiences that will help to shape their future. Business Advocacy: The Chamber is the Voice of Business! Chamber members band together to impact decisions made in our
community. There is clout in our unified voice whether representing the needs of one business, or working on behalf of all businesses collectively. The Vision 2040 initiative is a current example of private sector involvement through the chamber that makes things happen in Faribault.
Faribault’s Future: Employees need leadership skills and local knowledge to increase their effectiveness at work and build their community connections. Offering leadership development and community understanding make the program valuable and fun. Class starts annually in September. Look into signing up for the next class.

GROW Faribault: Our business retention and expansion effort is part of the statewide GROW Minnesota program. We partner with the Faribault EDA with three goals in mind; to thank businesses for employing people and contributing to the local economy, to learn about their business goals and assist where we are able and to identify issues affecting the business climate so we can provide stronger advocacy for business. Contact the Chamber to request a visit.
Small Business Development: The Chamber houses the Rice County Small Business Development Center. With support from Rice County, The Faribault EDA and the Faribault Industrial Corporation, the SBDC provides free confidential counseling to businesses on all business topics including SBA loan financing. Through the SBDC and our association with SCORE, we can offer free and confidential business assistance. LEARN WORK EARN PROGRAM OFFERS HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE When Blake Pleschourt graduated from Medford High School, he headed to a four-year university. When that wasn’t what he imagined, he went to a community college and got a business degree. But again, something didn’t seem to fit. Almost as soon as he started working with South Central College Machining Instructor Bill Block, the pieces fell into place. “It’s a whole different experience,” said Pleschourt. “I like the handson experience that South Central has to offer.” Pleschourt, who works for K&G Manufacturing, is taking advantage of the college’s Learn Work Earn program in which students work in their field while taking classes at SCC. Students enrolled in three SCC programs—Machining, Mechatronics and Welding—can participate in Learn Work Earn and earn a diploma or associate degree virtually debt-free. Students enjoy the obvious benefits, and employers appreciate that SCC provides new employees necessary skills and helps experienced workers enhance or develop existing skills. “We were able to move one of our students from assembly to the Fabrication Department,” said Cybex Fabrication Manager Jason DeMars which also hires SCC students. “It’s easier to fill assembly positions so this saved us searching for a machine operator.” Pleschourt, who’s already completed his certificate in machining, is working on his diploma. Then he’ll finish up his associate degree. The program is structured so students can continue until they’ve finished all
Blake Pleschourt coursework or get a certificate and build on what they’ve accomplished later. School and work, Pleschourt said, takes some juggling, but it’s worth it. “Learning is actually enjoyable,” he said. “You’re not trying just to get a letter grade. You’re trying to figure stuff out and that’s pretty beneficial.”

PIPELINE PROJECT OFFERS STUDENTS OPPORTUNITIES ALONG WITH TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
Bishar Abdullahi, laid off from his warehouse job and a student at South Central College, needed an income and to pay for his tuition. He found both through the PIPELINE Project. The project gives students an opportunity to receive on-the-job training and tuition reimbursement. And it’s giving employers the type of employees they’re struggling to find. A statewide program that started in 2014, it’s expanding dualtraining and apprenticeship programs. Employers partner with SCC to find new employees or give existing employees an opportunity to earn certificates associated with their profession. It also lets students like Abdullahi find good-paying jobs without racking up huge amounts of student debt. His job at Cardinal Glass pays about 50 percent more than his prior job. The PIPELINE Project provides up to $6,000 per student for tuition, books, fees and potentially any tools needed. The state pays part of the tuition, and companies, depending on their size, chip in 25 percent of the costs. Students apply to companies, which make the hiring decisions.
Bishar Abdullahi South Central College helps prepare students for interviews, and if hired, students work at least part-time each week. Abdullahi’s coursework will take about two years to complete and the goal is to have a full-time job waiting when he completes his classes. “There’s really a lack of employees with these skilled labor positions,” said Sue Mieska, Cardinal Glass business manager. “This was a beautiful partnership.”
