Housing & Economy The homes and neighborhoods of Northfield are a fascinating blend of the historic, traditional and contemporary; and new developments have remained sensitive to facilitating community connections. Close to Northfield’s city center you will find tree-lined streets and predictable lots with classic homes including craftsman, Victorian, and colonial, to name a few. The growth in the latter half of the 20th century included custom-built ranch houses placed along curvilinear streets and cul-de-sacs. In more recent years, large distinctive homes were built, and the Northfield area has seen a number of townhome, twinhome and single home developments. Also, there are a variety of apartment options for those who prefer to rent. Living options for seniors include retirement condominiums, assisted living and apartments.

Northfield Public Schools
Home to Two Colleges Any city would be excited to be the home of either St. Olaf College or Carleton College, but Northfield has the proud distinction of being home to both. Perennially ranked among the nation’s best liberal arts colleges, both institutions add culture, academic opportunity and diversity to the community. St. Olaf College is a leader in the number and percentage of students who study abroad. Each year, hundreds of students travel to one of the college’s off-campus international or domestic programs. As many as nine college guides have ranked St. Olaf among the best liberal arts colleges. Still, the campus prides itself on being excellent, not elite. St. Olaf is a private college but a public place.
For more information visit www.stolaf.edu. Founded in 1866, Carleton offers a top-rated education and a variety of cultural and recreational amenities to its students and faculty and to the community. It is annually ranked as one of U.S. News & World Report’s top-five liberal arts colleges in the nation.
For more information visit www.carleton.edu.
Opportunities The Cannon Valley Elder Collegium provides an academic experience in the humanities for students age 50 and older. For more information visit www.cvec.org/. Northfield Montessori offers full- and parttime childcare and a Montessori education for children 6 weeks to 6 years. Montessori Children’s House provides education to children ages 2 to 6 years. Sertoma’s Mission is to improve the quality of life today for those at risk or impacted by hearing loss through education and support. In the past 5 years, the Northfield Sertoma Club has donated over $75,000 to more than 40 different organizations, including Laura Baker Services, Health Finders, EPIC Enterprise, Ruth’s House, Northfield CAC, After Prom Committee and the Northfield Historical Society to name just a few. Funds are raised by selling DJJD buttons at the Entertainment Center, $125 pins for the Joseph Heywood Banquet, and sales of Christmas wreaths. Our members also volunteer for Meals on Wheels for 2 weeks each year and have assisted with local Beyond the Yellow Ribbon activities. Since 1999, Northfield Sertoma Club has donated over 34 classroom amplification systems to the Northfield School District and recently, 2 units to St. Dominic’s. They allow for improved listening experiences for all students, especially those with hearing issues or impairments. They also benefit teachers by allowing them to address the class at their normal voice level. The Northfield Sertoma Club meets every Tuesday morning at 7:00 AM at the Northfield Golf Club from August through May. If you want to know more about the Northfield Sertoma Club or are interested in joining our organization, please contact current Club President, Rick Risberg at 507-645-8825.
