Owatonna Public Utilities
208 Walnut Avenue South
Designed by Jacobson & Jacobson, the original municipal power plant was built in 1855 as a steam power plant. Additions to the building have kept the original style of brick with arched windows. The power plant was damaged in 2010 when the Straight River flooded. The 12 feet of water in the building’s basement rendered the generators inoperable. The Owatonna Public Utilities sought to repurpose the building to invest in the preservation and history of the building as it now functions as the headquarters of OPU. Schedule a tour of the building to see the history that remains. Artifacts from the building’s earlier days are integrated throughout the space and the original floor and equipment are incorporated in a way that recalls the historic structure.

National Farmers Bank
101 North Cedar Avenue
The National Farmers Bank is one of the 25 National Historic Landmarks in Minnesota and added to the “11 Can’t-Miss Stops on a Tour of America’s Hidden Architecture Gems” because of its premiere example of Prairie School Architecture. The bank was designed in the early 1900s by Louis Sullivan who was known as the “father of the skyscraper” and Frank Lloyd Wright’s mentor. Being the first and most famous of Sullivan’s “jewel box” banks, it features gold leaf arches, stained glass windows, 2-ton electroliers, and murals depicting farm life in Steele County. Now an operating Wells Fargo, the bank is located across from Central Park in Historic Downtown.

The historic campus is now called the West Hills Complex and is home to the Owatonna Arts Center, Little Theatre of Owatonna, City offices and the only known Orphanage Museum in the nation. Food for Every Mood
Get your fill at one of Owatonna’s local favorites. You can find El Salvadorian pupusas, homemade sandwiches, incredible burgers, tasty hand tossed pizza, Italian cuisine, amazing Mexican dishes and even sushi options! Owatonna has food for whatever you’re in the mood for.
Charming Coffee Shops
Once you sit down at one of Owatonna’s coffee shops, you’ll start to feel just how charming and friendly our community is. Start your morning right with your favorite drink and gourmet waffles in the heart of downtown at Central Park Coffee. Make sure you don’t miss the friendly homestyle café, OTB Cafe. They were named “Minnesota’s Best Bagel Shop” by WCCO News and partners with our local coffee roaster, Straight River Coffee, for fresh brewed coffee. Give one of their popular and delicious breakfast or lunch sandwiches a try!
Local Watering Holes
Wind down after a day on the trails at a local watering hole. Make it a margarita night with friends at one of the Mexican restaurants. Sing karaoke with a round of drinks at Wing’s Tavern & Grille. Enjoy a Raspberry Truffel Martini or a glass of wine at Torey’s Restaurant & Bar. Sit on the patio and enjoy a local craft beer at Mineral Springs Brewery located right on the Straight River or Foremost Brewing Cooperative downtown.
Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth
Owatonna has an abundance of desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth. Taste delicious homemade pies with flavors like lemon meringue and chocolate cream at The Kernel Restaurant or The Kitchen. Pick up a variety of gourmet caramel apples, handmade fudge, Simply Perfect Ice Cream Sundaes and famous chocolates at Russell Stover Candies. Take a downtown dessert tour and try handmade candies. Costas Candies has been making handdipped and rolled candies for more than 100 years. Try Curly Girlz Candy’s line of Keto Candy with a plant-based sweetener so you can indulge without any guilt. Also try their handcrafted traditional candies made with love.
LOCAL FOOD FINDS
You’ll feel at home when you walk into our local restaurants, bars and breweries and are welcomed like a local. Check out all of the options here.

Start your meeting planning with the Owatonna Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism! We’ll help with site visits, room blocks, welcome bags, customized tour itineraries and more. Here are five reasons why Owatonna is the perfect location for your next meeting or convention:
1. It’s just so charming
Sometimes you just want to get away from the big city and relax. Owatonna is the epitome of charm with its historic downtown, parks and boutiques. Your group will love exploring Owatonna in their down time.
2. It’s convenient
Owatonna is located one hour south of downtown Minneapolis at the intersection of I-35 and Highway 14. We are also home to Owatonna Degner Regional Airport.
3. The venues are affordable
Our meeting spaces are affordable and high quality. We have large venues ideal for mid-sized meetings and unique venues like Cabela’s and the Steele County History Center. We are also home to the Four Seasons Centre, a 50,000 square foot space, ideal for trade shows, and the Steele County Fairgrounds.
4. Lodging is plentiful
Owatonna is home to ten lodging properties which have close to 600 rooms, with more expected by 2025. Several of our properties have meeting spaces. See page 38 and 39 for details on lodging.
5. It’s fun!
Every good meeting needs a little bit of fun. Owatonna is home to SpareTime Entertainment where your group can play laser tag, go bowling, or hang out in the arcade or restaurant. You’ll get your golf fix at Inside Swing, Owatonna’s new golf simulator, our par-3 golf course, or one of our two 18 hole golf courses. We are happy to set up group tours at our attractions! Ten
