Connect. Experience. Create.

T

he Paradise Center for the Arts is as a place to connect with family, friends, and our community. It is a place where memories are made and where we celebrate the creativity in each of us. The Paradise is home to so many important moments for all ages. I’ve watched parents, grandparents, and children dance in the aisles; youth take selfies with their friends and cast members; volunteers gather in the kitchen for conversation and friendship; community members shop in the gift shop or talk with local farmers at the Winter Farmers Market; students get down-n-dirty with clay; business leaders relax in the balcony at a concert; or a group of friends on a daytrip to see art created by wool cast-offs. These are just a few of the ways the Paradise connects our community, provides meaningful experiences, and celebrates the creative process. The Paradise Center for the Arts is committed to finding new and unique ways to help our community Create, Experience, and Connect. Thanks to grants from the MN State Arts Board and the Southeastern MN Arts Council, in 2018 we are launching a new children’s theatre series that starts in February (more info on page 34) and Acoustic Gallery, a new music and arts series, kicks off in the fall. Through music and theatre, through classes and visual arts, through laughter and tears, through stories and questions, through BBQ and friendships, through the experience of creating something new and enjoying what others have created, the Paradise Center for the Arts is committed to building a stronger community through the arts. As you look through the 2018 Season Guide, we invite you to discover the ways you can Connect, Experience, and Create! Kristen Twitchell Executive Director

Our youngest actors (ages 3-7) will present their rendition of several of Aesop’s Fables. This wonderful intro-totheatre program helps build confidence and creativity in children. Come share in the joy and wonder of some of Aseop’s favorite children’s stories seen and heard through the eyes and ears of our Acting Fun for Little Ones cast. In addition to presenting these favorite children’s stories, our young actors will also help create the sets and props for their show.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Willow Brae is the duo of Andrea Stern, virtuosic Celtic harpist, and multiinstrumentalist Laura MacKenzie, on traditional wind-powered instruments and voice. Together they bring to life the airs, dance tunes and songs of the Irish and Scottish countrysides, conveying the warm resonance of traditional music and song as well as the spark and excitement of quick-paced dance tunes. They are joined by a top-notch duo of dancers from Rince na Chroi Irish Dance. Pride and Prejudice Children’s Theatre OCTOBER 5, 6 - 7pm OCTOBER 6 - 1pm Adults: $5 Students: $3 Directed by Andrew Velishek

Four proposals, three rejections, two marriages, and one scandal. This play, presented by middle and high school youth from our fall theatre camp program, helps students focus on more advanced aspects of theatre like character development. These students bring the wonderful characters of Jane Austen’s classic romantic comedy to life: witty, free-spirited Elizabeth Bennet and her four sisters, including the lovely Jane; their match-maker mother, Mrs. Bennet, who only wants what’s best for her daughters; and of course, the handsome but enigmatic, Mr. Darcy. Step into 1800’s England as our youth explore love and misfortune as only Jane Austen can tell it.

This classic psychological drama is just in time for Halloween! A chilling and mystifying study in mounting terror in which a small group of “psychically receptive” people are brought together in Hill House, a brooding, mid-Victorian mansion known as a place of evil and “contained ill will”. Based on the novel by Shirley Jackson and adapted for the stage by F. Andrew, this show was also made into the movie “The Haunting”.

Mick Sterling’s At Christmas

The Accidental Hero is a multi-media oneman show about a WWII American officer who miraculously liberates the Czech villages of his grandparents. It’s a true story written and performed by his grandson, Patrick Dewane. This touching show runs from belly laughs to tears. Dewane takes on a dozen different roles as he powerfully recounts his grandfather’s journey from Omaha Beach, the Battle of the Bulge, and the end of WWII. In the last week of the war, Konop’s story turns away from a soldier’s survival tale to something from mythology. He discovers his lost identity, embraced by the tribe he never knew. As he freed the Czechs, they liberated him.

At Christmas is a unique blend of familyfueled comedy and drama brilliantly written and performed by three alumni of Dudley Riggs Brave New Workshop, as well as a live, 6-piece band featuring one of the Twin Cities’ favorite front men, Mick Sterling, and A Brave new Workshop’s musical director, Peter Guertin. The presentation of At Christmas is wonderfully simple and minimal. What drives At Christmas are the stories and the music that will ring true with family members of all ages. The 90 minute show is a reflection of what the holidays are— funny, poignant, and heartwarmingly tender.
