nother year, another enormous voting turnout for the Southern Minn Scene Magazine Best of Southern Minnesota competition. We continue to be amazed and grateful for the amount of interest shown by you, the readers, in our little (not so little, though) annual competition. But not just your interest – it’s also your participation. In all honesty, it’s easier to do nothing. You don’t have to nominate businesses. You don’t have to vote for winners. You don’t have to share your businesses and ask your customers for support. And if you’re the customers, you

don’t have to show that support. But you do. And because of that, our writers and team members get to reach out to these Southern Minnesota artists, musicians, chefs, business owners and more to give them some good news. And that’s something special in an age when the good news seems sparse. So here’s your list for 2018. Throughout theater, restaurants, bars, miscellaneous, arts, retail services, music, and even sports categories, we’ve got old winners and new. It’s your favorite places to see a show, to eat a cupcake, to get your car fixed. It’s the best actors, bands and radio stations. It’s anything and everything Southern Minnesota Scene. he mouthwatering aroma enchants crowds from across the region to come and wait in queue for award-winning BBQ. But the delicious food at Smokin’ in Steele comes with a heaping side of award-winning blues. The soulful tunes give festival-goers something to groove to, which is a nice chance to burn off a few cals while calculating what tasty item to devour next. The festival’s promoter from the very beginning, Joe Elbert, said receiving Best Music Festival in South Minnesota is “excellent,” and a recognition he is very proud of as they approach a dozen smokin’ years of BBQ and blues at the Steele County fairgrounds. Not only are competitors cooking up ridiculously good grub, but musicians make this festival an experience that’s as well-rounded as bellies after a day of loading up on ribs and brisket. Elbert leans on blues buff John Hammer to get a full line-up each year since the festival’s inception. “We’re absolutely thrilled with our supporters,” Hammer said. “This is something we do to give back to the community and it takes the community to lift this up and provide funding for local charities while having a great time.” All proceeds from the music festival go to support Special Olympics, among other charities, Hammer said. “It’s a labor of love giving back to the community,” he added. While the festival features local acts and standout artists from the Twin Cities, Smokin’ in Steele is not short of nationally recognized blues acts. Grammy nominee Shaun Murphy - who toured and recorded with Little Feat, Moody Blues, Eric Clapton and Bob Seger - has stepped on the Smokin’ stage, as well as Bruce Katz and Johnny Neel - both of whom have played with The Allman Brothers. Besides BBQ and blues, Smokin’ in Steele has other features that make it a sure winner of Best Music Festival in Southern Minnesota. From the antique tractor and semi truck show, to 5K run/walk, and classic cars display, there is something for everyone. A key feature of the festival is free harmonica lessons for kids. Principal at St. Paul’s Lincoln Center, Mike Fugazzi, is a worldrenowned harmonica player and instructs the kiddos how to play

the mouth organ. Then afterward, they get to take the reed-free instrument home to impress family and friends. Hammer said in total, there are 13 acts all weekend long - most of the acts are friend who he said are willing to come to the fairgrounds to raise money for a good cause. One band will be the mainstay outside on Friday night, four will play throughout the day on Saturday and the rest perform in the Beer Garden. Acting as MC all weekend, Hammer said he keeps things rolling along. Although the festival is only for a few days, he said he is working on things behind-the-scenes all year round. Considering he only lives eight block from the fairgrounds, the festival is always on his mind. “It’s (the proximity) a great motiva-

With two different stations appealing to different audiences with different style and music, it’s the best of both worlds for the team over at KOWZ & KRUE, the Best Radio Station in Southern Minnesota. KOWZ plays adult contemporary hit songs from the 70s all the way up to today’s top charts. That wide array of music carries over to KREW, except the country station focuses on that one genre while mixing in some classic tunes with today’s hot country. Program director Andy Gott said that his team gives listeners more than music. “Music is a big reason why we’re successful, but we genuinely care about the community. Whether that means covering severe weather the day after tornadoes, or talking about when Tom Petty dies,” Gott said. “We take great care in delivering important information to our listeners.” Gott has been leading the stations for nearly four years, and said he couldn’t be more proud of the people he works with, from on-air stars to folks on the sales team, he said “we all work together to make out station successful.” “We’re not a giant corporation. We’re family-owned company and that’s not all that common in our business,” he said, adding that he encourages his team to be creative and be part of the community. tor,” he said with a laugh. Each year Hammer said they like to have something new and there are a number of options on the table, so “keep tuned,” he said. This event is sponsored by Owatonna Knights of Columbus and is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. sonality in Southern Minnesota. To go from “being a dumb farm boy with no experience getting into radio,” he said. “It’s very overwhelming” receiving such recognition. Kubat said he started his radio personality career about five years ago doing part-time broadcast for the Linder Farm Network. That quickly evolved into radio Djing on-air that he balanced between his other jobs of farming with his brother and mother and running a self-employed auto mechanic business. “I get up at 5 a.m., work out in my shop until 8 then come in shower change go into town to do radio shift, come home, change clothes and go back in the shop,” he said. “So I was doing a lot of clothes changing.” Born and raised on the outskirts of Owatonna, Kubat said he had to come up with his own on-air name like other hosts have, but the program director told him: “You’re a hometown boy, go by your real name.” Director Andy Gott said Kubat is “one of the best coworkers you could ever have.” “He takes his time with people that come in and when interviewing someone he actually cares what he’s talking to them about. It’s refreshing.” Listen to Kubat co-host the morning show on KRUE County 92.1 everyday 6 to 9 a.m. You can also hear him on the radio Saturday afternoons and MCing at many community events and fundraisers.

Claiming the title of rock & roll with a southern Minnesota twang, Just Mirlyn snagged the Best Band honor for 2018. Band members Brandon Scott Jacobson, Brent Burg, Peter Wallace Klug and Forrest T. Singer-songwriter Sam Ryden released his first solo album, “Sometimes,” in May while still a high school student in Northfield. He refuses to be bound to a single genre category, pulling from various styles including folk, acoustic blues, pop and gospel. His original music covers topics of love, redemption and possibilities. Now a high school senior, Ryden performs for audiences as small as a few coffee-shop patrons to as large as a Minnesota State Fair Grandstand audience of 9,000. He can often be found playing a variety of Northfield events, from brewery evenings to daytime riverside markets. Ryden said the Northfield community has been supportive of his music, with many local musicians supporting him both on and offstage. While he’s not yet sure of his college plans, he plans to study commercial music so he can focus on songwriting, guitar and vocals. “I know that writing and singing songs is my way of touching lives and bringing people together,” said Ryden. “It’s my way of being a light in a world that could use a little light.” Honorable Mention: Pete Klug By Anne Kopas

arie Marvin didn’t have a plan - she had a vision. “I believe in art for all people,” says Marvin. “I wanted an art space where all kinds of things can happen – from yoga to exercise and pottery classes to dog obedience training.” Marvin, the owner and founder of Crossings at Carnegie, started the business in 2001 in her hometown of Zumbrota as a place for artists to come in and show their work, but also for the community to take classes and be able to look at art organically. Located in an old Carnegie library built over 100 years ago, the building itself is a work of art. With high ceilings and eclectic décor taking over the space, the whole building is filled with color. It is

everything you would not expect an art gallery to be. Marvin describes her space as an accessible art gallery – like walking into a treasure chest with gorgeous artwork on the walls. She searches high and low for fair-trade, unique pieces that you’ll never see anywhere else. The gift shop boasts such treasures, like notecards, knits, purses, finely wrought wood and glass objects, prints, artsy mugs, and an eclectic section of jewelry – much of which is created by local artisans. “Sometimes even I forget what we have,” laughs Marvin. Over the years, the gallery has expanded into a space for musicians, with multiple concerts per month from artists coming from all over Minnesota to perform. While some of the gallery-goers come to concerts exclusively, Crossings at Carnegie also has a wide range of classes happening almost daily. Upcoming classes for November include beginning/ intermediate pottery, printmaking, and a couple of classes where you paint or make pottery while enjoy a glass (or two) of wine with your pals! Marvin assures, “You don’t have to be an expert to take a class here – we have people from every part of the spectrum, from novice to expert.” Crossings at Carnegie also offers a membership to the clay studio, which allows clay artists and potters of all levels 24/7 access to

The sale features items from all genres and styles, according to Operations Manager Julie Fakler, and it’s all donated by community members. “We get original artwork, lots of prints, items from estates,” she said. “We never know what’s coming in. One year, Aldi re-decorated and we got all their old artwork.” The sale is a partnership between Paradise Center for the Arts and the Mural Society of Faribault. This past year, it raised about $3,000; each organization receives a portion of the proceeds. “It’s a great way to support local arts by donating and shopping,” A d d y o u r e v e n t f o r F R E E t o t h e T I M E L I N E c a l e n d a r . Inspired by the children they wanted to educate, a group of Mankato leaders and educators created the museum in 2006. Since then, and through a transformation in 2014 and 2015, the museum has been a hub of learning, creativity, and discovery for kids across Minnesota – and now that hard work is being honored. The museum was named Best Museum/History Center in southern Minnesota for 2018. Kids and their families are invited to learn about their southern Minnesota heritage and the influences of the Dakota culture while discovering about agriculture, STEAM industries, and the arts at the museum. Combining fun with learning, the museum offers numerous hands-on exhibits and activities year-round for both children and their families. The museum also caters to tourists and families with special needs children, ensuring every visitor gets a chance to learn and explore. Alison Haider of Northfield Arts Guild

Rachel Haider of Northfield Arts Guild

BEST ACTRESS Alison Haider has been acting about as long as she has been able to walk, by her estimate. Raised in a family of theater enthusiasts, she started her acting career in children’s theater shows. In high school, she played Lucy in the Northfield Arts Guild’s production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” In college at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, she doublemajored in communications and theater, and noted her role as Meg in “Crimes of the Heart” as a highlight. Now, she works as program director at the Northfield YMCA during the day, acting by night with the Arts Guild. Her recent performances include the ancient Greek comedy “Lysistrata” and the Arthur Miller work “Death of a Salesman.” Acting, said Haider, allows you to step into a role you couldn’t occupy in your everyday life, and see the world through that person’s point of view. It’s a lifelong skill that she has no intention of giving up. “It’s more of a way of life than a hobby,” she said.

P

BEST DIRECTOR

erhaps it’s no surprise that Rachel Haider of Northfield grew up to be a director, since, in her own words, she “literally grew up in a theater.” From a young age, Haider had the opportunity to experience all aspects of theater, from acting to stage crew to directing. She described it as her “playground,” where she learned what it takes to put on a successful performance. As a kid, she began helping with props, costumes and ushering — the aspects of theater that often receive less applause despite their necessity. At age 10, she began taking acting classes. Haider got her first directing gig in high school, when she led a children’s play that toured in local elementary schools. Later, she went on to earn a degree in arts promotion and management with an emphasis in theater. “In order to be a successful director, you really need to know the entire process,” said Haider. “You need to be able to work equally well with the actors and designers and technicians, and even the front-of-house people.” Haider has directed plays at the Northfield Middle School, and both directed and taught full-time at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School, among other places. She settled in Northfield with her family 14 years ago, drawn in part by the Northfield Arts Guild, where she now works as performing arts manager. Highlights of her directing career include “The Miracle Worker,” “Guys and Dolls” and a production of “Cheaper By The Dozen” that required her to manage a dozen child actors. This past year, Haider directed two shows with Northfield’s Purple Door Youth Theater Program: “Les Miserables” and “The King’s New Clothes.” Haider will direct a production of “The Wizard of Oz” that opens in February. While auditions for actors don’t start until December, Haider is already hard at work preparing the script and other aspects of the production. Her preparation process begins anywhere

12

from eight to 12 months ahead of the show itself, since the director needs to have a deep knowledge of the story, a vision for how it will fit a particular stage and the leadership to assemble a cast with chemistry. The process is a challenge, said Haider, but it’s one she’s happy to tackle. “I love working with all those people, and I love the creativity that goes into it,” she said. “It’s all about bringing the story to an audience in the most truthful way possible.” For Haider, the story is the playwright’s gift to the audience, and it’s her job to ensure that viewers receive that gift, whether that means helping actors develop their characters, guiding the stage crew, or any other tasks necessary. “Every time I do a play, I feel like it’s the celebration of the story and of the synergy of all the partners combining efforts to create a show,” she said. William Mcintyre of Merlin Players in Faribault and Little Theatre of Owatonna BEST ACTOR A 17-year-old from Faribault is adding another accolade to his brief but mighty acting career by being named Best Actor in Southern Minnesota. William McIntyre is a senior at Bethlehem Academy where he performs each year in the spring musical. But one play a year isn’t enough for this young actor. Currently he’s doing tech backstage for Little Theatre of Owatonna’s production of “Murder Inn,” and he’s also part of the theater organization Merlin Players, which is no easy feat. “In order to become a Merlin Player you have to do three shows and at least one has to be a tech position,” he said. “My first production with Merlin Players was in 2014. I was in eighth grade and the musical was ‘The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.’ That’s probably one of the most fun roles I’ve ever had. I just got to be whacky and my character didn’t leave the stage both acts.” Growing up, McIntyre was more into sports, but when he got into middle school, he was drawn to the spotlight with his firstever community production, “Miracle On 34th Street,” “From that point I’ve just been hooked and I can’t stop,” he

said with a laugh. McIntyre thinks he will pursue a major in music - he plays the bassoon, euphonium and sings in school choir - in college and possibly minor in theater. But whatever life has instore for the thespian after high school, one thing’s for sure: “I’ll be involved in community theater for life.” Honorable Mention: Zach Opseth By Kim Hyatt

Les Miserables by Northfield Arts Guild BEST PRODUCTION When it comes to being named the Best Production of 2018 in

southern Minnesota, some might think the title will go to professional troupes. Instead, it goes to a group of hard working and well-deserving youth who performed “Les Miserables” in 2018 with Purple Door Youth Theatre at the Northfield Arts Guild. Started by Rachel Haider in 2015, the company has done one or two shows per year. Working with a 37-student cast and eight student technicians, as director, Haider said she and choreographer Jana Hirsch, musical director Liz Schepley, tech director Deb Clark, and costumer Tania Legvold had to find ways to tell what Haider called a complicated story of justice, duty, heartbreak, and compassion in a way that was appropriate for their actors but stayed true to the production’s intent. “It’s really quite the undertaking for students,” Haider said. “They were amazing, and that’s why I’m really super excited that they won because they worked hard.” Every show of the production this spring had waiting lists of people who were practically begging to see the show, Haider said, and the fan mail kept coming in. The Purple Door Youth Theatre is preparing for its next production, “The Wizard Of Oz,” Haider said, and auditions will begin in February. Young thespians interested in performing or theatre geeks who want to catch a show can visit the Northfield Arts Guild at 304 S. Division St., Northfield. www.northfieldartsguild.com

It’s been a bittersweet year for Little Theatre of Owatonna. In May, LTO said goodbye to it’s “Lady of the House,” beloved friend and thespian Sharon Stark. Stark helped found LTO over 50 years ago and cared for it like a mother and true matron of the arts, serving as executive secretary for 52 years. Her legacy unmatched and contributions infinite to those she worked with, Stark left big shoes to fill at the community theater. But as they all say, the show must go on. LTO put on “Seussical” this summer, followed by a concerted and passionate community effort to rename the West Hills Auditorium to the Sharon Stark Auditorium at West Hills - a well deserved honor, indubitably. And about those big shoes - obviously fashionably footwear because Stark was the textbook definition of debonair - the LTO Board of Directors went on to hire an interim part-time executive secretary, Victoria Barkowiak. Adding to the sweetness of another season at LTO after much heartache, the non-profit theater company is awarded Best Theater and Best Theater Troupe in Southern Minnesota, which is a region rich in arts and therefore competition. LTO will carry out the 2018-2019 season with five productions and children’s’ camp this summer. See what shows are in store this season by visiting LTO, 560 Dunnell Dr., Owatonna. www.littletheatreofowatonna.org

Imminent Brewing in Northfield BEST LOCAL BEER OR CIDER, BEST SMALL MUSIC VENUE There’s nothing quite like grabbing a drink with your friends, but for Randy and Tonja Clay and Derek and Laura Meyers, owning a brewery with friends rivals that. Imminent Brewing opened on June 16, 2017, but in its short tenure in Northfield as the city’s only brewery its left an impression on its patrons. Imminent was voted to have the Best Beer/Cider in southern Minnesota for 2018. While it doesn’t have any ciders, Imminent does have a part cider, part juice, part beer concoction on its listing of unique brews. Each recipe, Derek said, places an emphasis on creating locally sourced brews, relying on local grain, honey, and fruit farmers for its ingredients. Regulars will note that Imminent has six mainstay beers, and the brewery has featured unique flavors, like a honey basil beer and a rhubarb wheat ale to keep hopheads on their toes. Though the foursome met at a home brewing club and enjoy their craft, Derek said the group is passionate about turning their space into a collaborative atmosphere for the community. The brewery hosts local musicians and is hoping to host local events like meetings, fundraisers, and informational sessions. “As soon as we moved here,” Derek said, “(Laura and I) were just welcomed by the community with open arms and got really involved. This seemed like a way that we could become even more involved and give back a little bit and contribute to all the cool things that are already happening.” Share a drink with Imminent Brewing at 519 S. hat’s in a name? For the father/ son duo that is Caleb and Doug Fenske, it’s the feeling they had when they decided to open a brewery – a lack of sanity – while keeping their day jobs. It started as a passion project, with the pair honing their brewing skills for several years and learning the ins and outs of good brews (even switching from city water to purified water to maintain to honor the art.) As the years went by, Caleb developed a passion for the craft and an affinity for all different types and flavors of beer. In 2018 that led to Lost Sanity Brewing. A locally owned and operated brewery in Madelia, Lost Sanity has nine taps, with five stable beers and four rotating taps. From the rich, malty Manic Black Lager to the pleasantly creamy Batty Belgian Blonde, the beer is poured only at the brewery, though you’re more than welcome (and maybe even encouraged) to take home a growler of your favorite brew. Lost Sanity focuses on beer for the masses – you won’t find any sour beers here anytime soon – and encourages drinkers to learn about their brew. “We focus on doing beer and doing beer well – I’m not concerned about making something unique,” said Caleb. “We pull ordinary people from the street and teach them something about the craft. It’s not a bar – we’re selling an experience.” Keeping things local, Caleb uses specially processed Madelia water –beer is mostly water, after all! – to provide that smooth, creamy finish they are so well known for. You can find locally sourced ingredients in all their beers – including the honey in their popular Brown Ale. The building – a long, skinny space that was once a familyowned pharmacy until the mid-90s – was recently renovated and houses simple décor, with high and low top wooden tables spanning the length of the room. Unlike a bar, you can see into the area where they make the beer. As for food, you won’t find them cooking that up in house– instead, customers can order pizza or bring in Mexican food from local restaurants.

Laurie Hoheislel at Froggy Bottoms in Northfield BEST BARTENDER/SERVER Customer service is second nature for Laurie Hoheisel. “Customer service is in my blood,” Hoheisel said. “I love people, and I love meeting new people every day and new experiences. It’s just like every day is a new experience.” It’s only fitting then that the owner, bartender, and server at

Froggy Bottoms River Pub & Lily Padio was named Best Bartender/ Server by Southern Minnesota readers for 2018. But if you ask Hoheisel, the honor belongs to all her staff. “I’m shocked,” Hoheisel said, trying to find the right words. “My whole staff is amazing as far as bartenders and servers. I feel it’s us as a whole. I feel like my whole Froggy’s family won that.” Hoheisel has been owner of Froggy Bottoms since 2011, after cleaning and fixing it up following a flood in 2010. Jokingly, Hoheisel said she asks herself everyday why she owns a restaurant, but truthfully, it’s the people she meets every day that make the job worthwhile. “I’m just happy that (Froggy Bottoms) is in Northfield,” Hoheisel said. Froggy Bottoms River Pub & Lily PADio in Northfield BEST PATIO Froggy Bottoms River Pub & Lily Padio now has another distinction to add it it’s growing accolade list. The establishment has been honored with having the Best Patio in southern Minnesota – again. The patio was a new addition to the restaurant a few years after Laurie Hoheisel assumed ownership in 2011. The business next to Froggy’s closed down, so space became available. Hoheisel jumped at the chance to offer more for her customers. Since then, the patio – or Lily Padio as it’s aptly named – has been described as a European getaway in the Midwest. The Cannon River flows quietly by as patrons enjoy a sunny Minnesota evening sipping and dining. This isn’t the first time Froggy’s “padio” has won this honor. For about the last five years, voters have dubbed it the best in southern Minnesota, and Hoheisel hopes they can continue being the best for a town they love so much. “Northfield is such an awesome town and a great destination,” Hoheisel said. “A lot of people come down, and there’s always something going on.” Check out the views from Froggy Bottoms’ lily padio at 307 S. El Tequila Mexican Restaurant in Owatonna

T

BEST MEXICAN FOOD o the thousands of followers on it’s Facebook page and the millions of customers visiting one of it’s five locations the past two decades, it comes as no surprise that El Tequila Family Mexican Restaurant was voted Best Mexican Food in Southern Minnesota. El Tequila boasts a 4.7 stars out of 5 on the social media site where customers praise the authentic Mexican cuisine and outstanding staff led by owners Enrique Avalos and his wife

Karina Garcia. Many say the family-owned business feels like home, and the staff like family. Those feelings are mutual, Garcia said. “We love them (customers). We wouldn’t be here because of them and their support,” she said. “They have so many choices now these days, so for them to choose us all the time, that’s amazing. That’s what family does… Some people don’t have family, they don’t have that kind of love. But they can come here and feel like family.” The restaurant has been serving mouthwatering fajitas, quesadillas, tacos, and refreshing margaritas with the perfect side of chips and salsa for over 20 years. Garcia’s mother opened the first location in Faribault debuted in 1996. Then the family expanded to Owatonna in 1999, followed by three more locations: Northfield, Waseca and New Prague. So folks in Southern Minnesota don’t have to go far to find this favorite, tasty spot. With each location, there is a consistent focus on great service, Garcia said. “That’s why we have been so successful, because we have worked to hard to make sure everything is quality.” Receiving the recognition of Best Mexican Food in Southern Minnesota is becoming rather routine for El Tequila, but Garcia said that the restaurant always “works hard for the next one, so it’s a blessing.” For the true El Tequila fans with their favorite go-to plate they turn to each time they enter the vibrant, welcoming eatery, dare to taste something different, such as Mexican-style flan, or take a

pick from one of the largest selections of Mexican beers and Tequila around. The restaurant isn’t short of flavor or humor, posting funny GIFs on social media and, on it’s website under catering services, El Tequila states that it serves at every event, from graduations and groom’s dinners, to “anniversaries or divorces (Just sayin’),” as the website reads. It’s a top-pick for birthday parties as staff sing and serve up fried ice cream with a large sombrero to complete the celebration. And whether rounding up a group on the patio during the summer, or beating the winter blues inside with cheerful cantina music playing in the background, El Tequila is a favorite place for any occasion. One review read: “My favorite Mexican restaurant and I’ve been to (it) a LOT! Enrique, Karina and their staff are always friendly and treat you like family ... plus the food is awesome, the margaritas oh so tasty and the salsa is the best around!” Another raved: “I love the friendly atmosphere almost as much as I love the salsa! The food tastes delicious and is served quickly. El Tequila is my go-to place.” And one more of many reviews said: “This place is where you feel like you are home, with family and the last bite is as good as the first!

Tandem Bagels in Northfield BEST BAGEL SHOP Since 2012, Minnesotans have been enjoying what Gretchen Enerson calls “fresh-baked goodness.” And that fresh goodness has been labeled as the Best Bagel Shop in Southern Minnesota for 2018. General manager of Tandem Bagels, Enerson said the shop is combination ownership between four couples and one individual. They opened their first shop in Mankato in 2012 and opened up a second location just a year later in Northfield. Patrons can enjoy a variety of sweet and savory freshly-made bagel options that include local ingredients, vegan and vegetarian selections, seasonal pairings, and kids’ meals. Regulars will know the shop for its bagels of the month, which it sells regularly on Thursdays and Saturdays. To top it off, the shop pairs its bagel offerings with local artwork on its walls and special events in partnership with other small businesses. On average, the shop sells 700 bagels on weekdays and about 1,500 bagels on the weekends. Those numbers can fluctuate when events happen, Enerson said, but the shop’s 35 employees know local Minnesotan customers will keep flocking for some

Crack of Dawn Bakehouse and Market in Faribault BEST BAKERY Chris and Lori Momberg never imagined they would own a bakery. They started by selling their breads at the Riverwalk Market Fair in Northfield in 2010, with their then-infant son strapped to Lori’s chest in a carrier. They quickly grew in popularity, baking hundreds of loaves and rolls fresh each Saturday morning, beginning before the crack of dawn; as Lori says, “That’s a perfect name for our endeavor!” “We didn’t intend to become full-time bakers and business owners, but eventually it became obvious we needed a bakehouse of our own,” she said. Two and a half years ago, purchased a newly renovated bakery in downtown Faribault. Their specialties are “Faribault Famous” cinnamon rolls, colossal pecan caramel rolls and savory quiche. “Our sandwiches and soups at lunchtime are proving to be quite popular as well. We also sell a ton of artisan-style bread loaves at both the Riverwalk Market and at the Bakehouse,” Lori said. They’re a “Bakehouse and Market,” which gave them a lot of flexibility. “We are a Bakehouse, making everything from scratch, with real ingredients, freshly baked each day, to stock the front ‘treats’ counter, as well as the bread shelves,” Lori said. “We also make all of our soups entirely from scratch, and bake our own breads for our new hand-made sandwiches.” They also have a market area full of gift items, fun kitchen tools and gadgets, Bakehouse-made items to take hope, and special items like Chris’ sea-salt caramels during the holidays. When it comes to burgers, King’s Place of Miesville are legendary not just in Southern Minnesota, but across the state. Twin Cities residents have been known to take time off work to make the trek just to get one of the Greenlee family’s famous burgers. A true family affair, King’s is owned by siblings Terri Lawrence and Jeff Greenlee, but their parents, first purchased it 34 years ago. Arlene (age 86) and Jerry (76) still come in every day to work the same they did back in 1984. So what makes the burgers so special? “We used fresh ground beef and patty three or four times a day,” says Lawrence. “We slice the tomatoes, green pepper, onions on a daily basis. Everything’s fresh. People can sit at the bar and watch what we’re doing so you see exactly what you’re getting.” Kings features 103 different types of burgers. You want peanut butter on your burger? They’ve got it. Hot dogs on your burger? Yes. Pork on the burger? Of course. Of all their burgers, Lawrence says the Bases Loaded is the most

tered green beans --are the comfort foods that propelled her to the honor of Best Chef in Southern Minnesota. “I have a passion for making food –it can express so much!” said Anderson. Fresh vegetables, breads and hand-pattied burgers make her meals stand out, and hotdishes never see the inside of a microwave. Anderson isn’t afraid to challenge the local palate either. When she gets creative with offerings like pork carnitas enchiladas with pepper jack cream sauce, or Korean barbeque seafood tacos, customers literally eat it up. The daily menu at JB’s includes the build-a-burger, salads and hot sandwiches one would expect, but Anderson puts her own twist on several hometown favorites. Her Mingo Melt merges shaved ham, turkey, Swiss and American cheese in a satisfying grilled sandwich. Other local favorites to try are the Bulldog Melt and Denver Sandwich. So what inspires Anderson’s work in the kitchen each day? It’s the reaction she gets from customers. “People are happy to eat good food, and I love to make people happy,” Anderson said. Cakewalk in Northfield BEST CUPCAKE/CAKE While she was working at Lunds & Byerlys grocery store chain in the Twin Cities area, Teara Myers knew she could venture out on her own. So, she and her business partner, Jody, began CakeWalk on Oct. 5, 2012, and since April, Myers has been running the business completely by herself. Her hard work, determination, and gut feeling have afforded CakeWalk the title of Best Cake/Cupcake in southern Minnesota. And after working in a metro area for a high-end grocer, owning a business in Northfield is the perfect fit, Myers said, referring to her customers as “CakeWalk fans.” “I just love the small the small town,” Myers said. “It’s completely different than a bigger town… (The people), they’re very loyal, and I think we get that in a small town.” CakeWalk fans and newbies can enjoy more than 150 varieties of cupcakes, and a wide selection of pastries, cheesecakes, cream puffs, bars, and eclairs. The bakery has also had many wedding cake orders, Myers said. By far, one of the more popular flavors, Myers said, is the bakery’s black velvet cupcake. This delectable baked good is a dark chocolate cake filled with creamy chocolate ganache and topped with vanilla bean cream cheese icing drizzled in chocolate. Among this chocolate lovers’ dream creation, Myers estimated the bakery sells through 250 cupcakes on a weekday, and on the weekends, they completely sell out, baking around the clock to fill its 500-cupcake case. When it comes to fine dining, many restaurants talk about “new concepts” and “bold directions” for their food. But for the Hubbell House Restaurant, their food is steeped in tradition, going all the way back to 1854. “We’re committed to early American hospitality,” says Alaina Pappas-Mitchell, who co-owns the restaurant with her brother Don Pappas. That’s not marketing: the Pappas family has owned the Hubbell house for 72 years. According to Pappas-Mitchell, diners find the restaurant “unique and compelling,” which is a testament to both its historic nature and excellent food. Serving traditional fine American fare from steak and chicken to walleye and pasta, the Hubbell House Restaurant draws diners from all over the region looking for classic elegance and exceptional quality. That’s not to say that their menu doesn’t evolve: there’s options for vegetarians and those with gluten restrictions, and a kid’s menu for families dining with small ones. The restaurant also features an extensive collection of historic items and documents as befits a building that’s older than the State

Basil’s Pizza Palace in Northfield BEST PIZZA When you’ve been in the pizza game as long as the Pistavas family has you don’t have to change much. The recipes have remained the same since Bill Pistavas opened what is now called Basil’s Pizza. Originally the restaurant was just “Bill’s Pizza Palace.” Bill Pistavas passed away last year and now his son, Dimitri runs the restaurant that his mother owns. Bill passed down his knowledge of cooking to his son. “Touch and feel is how he taught the recipes,” Dimitri said. “Put a pinch in here or there. He taught me with terms like that. He really cooked.” Basil’s makes its own dough and sauce, adds its own spices to the ground beef and make its own spaghetti sauce, Dimitri said. Basil’s also tries to be as authentic and true to the ingredients as possible, Dimitri said. The restaurant doesn’t change the formula unless a supplier sells or closes, Dimitri said. “Simple can be just as rich and full of taste,” Dimitri said. “I try to follow an old recipe and old ways of cooking. It’s home style cooking in a restaurant setting.” One of the constants at the restaurant has been the pizza ovens, which were in place before Dimitri began working there in 1984 and looked decades old even then, he said. BEST ICE CREAM

Is it even a competition after getting a four-peat? It’s loud and clear that Southern Minnesota is screaming they want some Blast Soft Serve ice cream as the tasty community pillar is named, yet again, Best Ice Cream this side of the state. “Yummy, reasonably priced, and LOCAL! Is there anything better?!” one review raved. Many customers agree that the best way to enjoy the Blast is via bike and taking a pit stop for a refreshing and delicious frozen treat. Better yet, bring your doggo along to share a pup cone. Contrast that sweet stuff with the inevitable sign that summer is coming to an end when the Blast announces each fall that the windows are closed for the season. Customers cry for just one more day, one more cone, but hold onto hope knowing the ice cream machines will turn on again next season. With regret, they go for the less fun alternative: a gallon of Kemps vanilla ice cream that will accumulate crystals in the freezer and serve as a reminder of why you love soft serve. Though there is some turnover in ownership, the tradition of this award-winning ice cream shop carries on. Long live the Blast, and mark your calendars for April when the amazing treats return. Smoqehouse in Northfield BEST LUNCH Andy and Heidi Kubes have worked in restaurants for more than two decades, but their most recent plunge has proven to be one of southern Minnesota’s tastiest moves yet. Once again, their barbeque-style restaurant, Smoqehouse, is being recognized as having some of the best food in the area, snagging the Best Lunch honor in 2018. Smoqehouse started more than two and a half years ago in Faribault, Minn., and last year it was recognized for five different categories including Best BBQ, Best Chef for Andy, and Best Fries. Now with two locations – one in Northfield and one on a small island in Florida – Andy said he and Heidi are hoping to continue growing the business., For now, diners in southern Minnesota enjoy a rotating special lunch selection that includes the restaurant’s popular brisket burger and pulled pork. Fans of traditional barbeque can get their fix, while the menu offers a variety of multicultural flame-inspired dishes. “We like to focus on how other countries smoke foods and play with fire,” Andy said. “We study different areas, and that’s how we made our menu.” As they split time between Florida and Minnesota, life can get a bit hectic for the Kubes, but each location, Andy said, offers them a unique customer experience. While they mostly deal with rotating tourists in Florida, in Minnesota, they know the regulars. “We just love to see how we effect people,” Andy said. “We see the same people every day, we have awesome regulars and talk about food and share pictures and create this little environment.” Get your BBQ fix by visiting Smoqehouse at 212 S. PORTERHOUSE Steak & Seafood Restaurant in Lakeville BEST PLACE FOR A STEAK Angus beef, aged a minimum of 28 days. This is the key to the best steak in Southern Minnesota, at Porterhouse Steak & Seafood. The Lakeville establishment and its sister restaurant north of Saint Paul in Little Canada have a strong reputation for combining excellent steaks with excellent service. Porterhouse General Manager Dave Hyde is extremely proud of what they do, and when you talk to him, it shows. “Our ribeye and tenderloin are probably our two most popular steaks,” he says. “They’re very different—the ribeye is very marbleized while the tenderloin is very lean. But both are very popular.” In addition to the excellent steaks, Porterhouse features a wide variety of seafood, most of which is shipped to the restaurant fresh (never frozen) every day or every other day. In fact, Hyde says, some people come to Porterhouse just for the clam chowder, which is made fresh daily by Porterhouse’s kitchen staff. Hyde also credits the experience Porterhouse delivers for its popularity. “We’re full service fine dining with extremely knowledgeable servers and a very low ratio of servers to tables. Servers usually won’t have more than three tables in their section at a time. That way they

According to Heidi, “it’s the heart and soul we, owners and staff, put in to the food and experience, all at a reasonable price.” According to Heidi, the Rudy’s steak, pork schnitzel, and beef stroganoff are the three most popular items at Ranchero. BEST SUB/SANDWICH I might sound like a broken record, but Hogan Brothers has the best hoagies. The best. If you disagree, I’ll be in the parking lot of Econo Foods in Northfield every day from 2-3 p.m. if you want to fight me. All joking aside, Hogan Brothers has been wonderfully serving the Northfield community since 1991. With their secret sauce and freshly baked bread, it’s hard to beat. Along with the hoagies, they also offer freshly baked cookies and muffins daily, and if you’re feeling the summer time has got you down, and insanely hot, try out any of their 12 flavors of ice cream. With its relaxed atmosphere, every college student flocks to this place. Not only for their always delicious hoagies, but the fact that you get a lot of bang out of your buck, with their half a hoagie (which is the size of a subway, I kid you not) and soup special being under seven dollars. I never dared to get the whole hoagie, since it’s the size of my arm. But for college kids it’ll crave their insatiable hunger after writing a thesis a million times longer than this review. Tanzenwald Brewing Company in Northfield BEST VEGETARIAN FRIENDLY Tanzenwald, which is translated from German to “dancing forest,” will be a place to celebrate, according to its owners, Bell Pittman, 34, and Steve Pittman, 38. The Tanzenwald menu features German-inspired dishes, starting with five sausage options, but there are plenty non-meat options, too: including anything from cabbage pancakes to fried Brussel sprouts and potato salad. just about every ingredient in the food and brews is locally sourced. One of the taproom walls is decorated with pictures and descriptions of the 15, so far, local farms and producers contributing to the final products. “We really wanted to connect ourselves with the community, and Northfield has a lot to offer,” Pittman said. “There are very good farmers around here, who have the same mentality as us. Ranchero Supper Club in Webster BEST SUPPER CLUB Looking for exceptional steak, seafood, and traditional German fare? Look no further than the gem of Webster, MN: the Ranchero Supper Club. Current owners Heidi and Todd Elwood took the restaurant over from Heidi’s parents in 2012, but kept the same pride, dedication, and “Swiss flair” that Heidi’s father Rudy Ettlin brought every day when he started Ranchero way back in 1972. “We’re preserving 45 years of history,” says Heidi. “It works for us.

When Cathy and Devin Hoy first purchased Bullheads Bar & Grill five years ago, the menu had ten items. Now, they have a six-page menu of appetizers, burgers, sandwiches and other bar fare for hungry customers. But it’s the wings that really make them stand out. According to Cathy, “We offer wings, boneless or regular, and sixteen different sauces, including three that are homemade in our kitchen.” Especially popular sauces include the Mild, Thai Chili, Chipotle Barbeque, as well as dry rubs. “Our Sexy Pig dry rub is quite the hit, let me tell you.” Unlike some wing places, Bullheads doesn’t try to kill you with heat, they’d rather give you quality taste. “We used to have a hot sauce that you had to put gloves on to put on the wings,” says Cathy, “but if we have to use gloves, people shouldn’t be eating this stuff.” Although the wings are part of the menu every day of the week, it’s their Thursday night special, complete with 50 cent wings, that is their biggest night and brings in crowds from around the area. The Dork Den in Mankato

F

BEST GAMING STORE

rom Joe Huber’s perspective, there’s really no better place for gaming than the Midwest. With the resurgence of Madison, Wis.-originated Dungeons and Dragons following Netflix’s popular Stranger Things, to well-known board game graphic designers calling Minnesota home, Midwestern gamers live in a bubble of gaming creation, Huber said. At The Dork Den, a game shop Huber began in 2012 with former co-worker and fellow gamer-turned-business-partner, Greg Senske, gamers create their own community and find people with passions just like them in a place created by their peers. “Both of us are lifelong nerds, so we thought we could bring something to the tabletop gaming industry,” Huber said, adding that he has always had an extensive board game collection. The Dork Den was named Best Game Shop by southern Minnesota readers for 2018. The shop opened in 2012, where Friesen’s Family Bakery is now located on Riverfront Drive in Mankato. In 2013, the shop moved to its current location in Old Town Mankato, still on Riverfront Drive. The den wasn’t done expanding just yet. Six months later, it took over another storefront next to it, and it’s been occupying two spaces since. Huber said he and Senske enjoy the space The Dork Den occupies because of the atmosphere of the location. Specializing in comics and tabletop gaming, such as Settlers of Catan, Pokémon, Magic the Gathering, and Dungeons and Dragons, The Dork Den targets gamers of all levels. The shop also offers comic books and model kits for those interested in all kinds of various gaming and fantasy entertainment. Currently, Pokémon and Dungeons and Dragons have become popular options at the game shop, thanks mainly to pop culture trends, Huber said. Since the premiere of Netflix’s Stranger Things – in which the show’s main characters play Dungeons and Dragons – sales for the mystical fantasy game have quadrupled, Huber said. The digital game Pokémon GO has also breathed life into the popular card game, he added. The shop has events seven days per week, Huber said, and has been offering classes and workshops for various age groups, such as the Dungeons and Dragons classes for kids. Offered for the third year in a row, shorter kids classes are offered during the spring, winter, and fall, and during the summer, the shop offers a one-week course for kids, Huber said. The shop also offers their own expertise and storytelling with its games, Huber said. The storyline of Dungeons and Dragons available to play at the shop is unique to the shop as it was written by local dungeon masters, Huber said.

Because of the passion and talent built up after years of dedication to the games, Huber said they will often see regulars coming into the shop multiple times per week. It’s become a hub of for local gaming, as Huber said he feels a personal responsibility and connection to each customer. “(It’s) really rewarding. We really get to hear that feedback unlike that chain store the cashier doesn’t know you and what you’re buying,” Huber said. “We know and care about the products. SIFT Thrift Shop in Kenyon BEST ANTIQUE STORE, BEST SECOND HAND STORE Need to affordably outfit a new household in a day? Done! Searching for that elusive antique item? Here it is. It’s easy to see how SIFT Thrift Store in Kenyon earned the titles of Best Second Hand Store (for the second year in a row) and Best Antique Store in Southern Minnesota. The majority of SIFT’s product comes from purchasing estates, storage sheds and garage sales, which is in turn another aspect of their business –helping families deal –in a timely manner -with all the things accumulated over a lifetime and “saving it from trash.” SIFT carries a wide variety of household items, tools and a big selection of furniture, with weekly specials based on how long product has been in the store. Inventory changes daily and owners Doug and Mary Klatt advise customers that many of their items are one-of-a-kind. What’s on the shelf today may not be there tomorrow. “Walking through the store brings back many childhood memories for people,” said Doug Klatt. “They find vintage items just like what they remember from grandma’s house.” For the Klatts, it’s fun to hear people talking about special things they are looking for, like a particular pair of salt and pepper shakers or a vintage knick knack, and then be able to find it for them. They keep a detailed notebook of special requests, and the system

Minnesota Orthodontics in Northfield BEST DENTIST/ORTHODONTIST For a second year running, Minnesota Orthodontics was voted the ‘Best’ in SoMinn. “It’s pretty exciting,” said Shelley Langer, treatment coordinator in the Northfield office. “We really appreciate people in the community recognizing the strengths our group has to offer.” The Minnesota Orthodontics team provides comprehensive orthodontic care to patients of all ages. The practice is family and patient oriented, putting your individual needs and goals at the forefront. The practice has also earned a distinction as a top 1 percent practice with Invisalign. Less than 1 percent of all practices in the world earn this distinction. It also offers Damon Smile and Incognito braces. Damon Smile Braces use a slide mechanism to hold the archwire, reducing the amount of pressure exerted on the teeth, allowing the teeth to move more freely, quickly and comfortably. “Being that Invisalign is one of the more progressive treatment styles, people are seeking us out,” Langer said. “In addition, the Damon Smile Braces … when people look for that online, they seek us out. We use unique products that set us apart from the industry.” Minnesota Orthodontics’ Northfield office is located at 2019 Jefferson Road, Suite C. www.minnesotaorthodontics.com

But The Grand Event Center wasn’t done entertaining. In 2001, it was reopened to host wedding receptions, reunions, parties, concerts, and special events. With its recent restoration, it now resembles the swank auditorium that it was in the early 1900s. Its large stage equipment with a full sound system is perfect for musical performances, especially since it was originally built as an opera house. The acoustics are still surprisingly on point. This event center is a shining diamond, with cozy corners, and a magical feel. It doesn’t only host weddings; it houses many fundraising events, galas and many other kinds of events. She advises customers on what is best for the season as well as what might be on special that week from her distributor. Rustic Rose clients know they can count on Bailey to care about their needs, even if they make a special request. Finally A Gift Store in Faribault BEST GIFT SHOP Janna Viscomi is one busy woman. For most people, running a restaurant (in her case, Bernie’s Grill in Faribault) would be enough. But not for her. She also owns Vintage Ballroom and Suites, and Vintage Residential Suites (both located in the same building as the restaurant). If that weren’t enough, she has also owned a gift store right across the street since 2012. “I wanted to buy the building. It was cute, but I wanted to make it cuter,” she said. “People enjoy going into old buildings. You can drive in downtown Faribault and see the buildings, but how many can you go in?” Finally A Gift Store fills a speficic niche, Viscomi said. “There’s a real need in the community have a place where we can find unique things. Women like to shop, see things, and try on clothes,” she said. “(A lot of people buy gifts online), but not everyone’s organizations enough to do that.” The store has gifts from Minnesota, soaps, candle, purses and more. The items available are perfect for gifts to people for all sorts of occasions, Viscomi said, from a baby to a new home, to illness, to retirement. A lot of people come in and fill out wish lists, then their families will use those lists to shop for occasions such as

Now owner and operator of Muddy Paws Resort, her philosophy and years of dedication to your very own pets had readers shooting her through for the Best Kennel/Pet Hotel/Doggy Daycare in Southern Minnesota for the third year in a row. The original business opened in the 1960’s under the old name of Camp Canine Kennels. Stricker started out in the business in the 1998, but soon took ownership in 2005 and changed the name to Muddy Paws Pet Resort in January 2017. Stricker likes to tell people, “same people, same place—we’re just much cooler now.” “One of the life lessons my father taught me was to figure out what it is you love to do and then figure out how to get paid to do it,” says Stricker. “Caring for dogs is my childish passion, but I just figured out how to make it a career.” The resort offers boarding, grooming, daycare, and puppy training. Along with this, their most widely recognized offerings are the wide range of activities. From nature hikes and bedtime stories to birthday parties and Halloween costume parties, their clients love to have their dogs participate in all the fun. Along with all they have to offer, Muddy Paws is all about passion—they love what they do and it shows. “In every activity we plan, meal we prepare, or haircut we complete, we keep our love for our clients as our focus,” says Stricker. “We understand how our furry friends are members of both our clients’ families and our own Muddy Paws family and deserve to be treated as such.” You can find all of your doggy daycare fun with Muddy Paws Resort at 20225 Canby Ave. in Faribault. Nerstrand Meats & Catering BEST MEAT MARKET For 128 years, Nerstrand Meats and Catering has been a haven for meat lovers of all stripes. The meat shop is an essential part of Minnesota history, and has been owned by the same family since its inception in 1890. The current owner, Mary Heggedahl, ran the store for many years with her husband Clyde, who tragically passed away in 2016, as did her son, Jeff. Mary herself has beaten cancer three times. But with the help of her daughter, Valerie Kuchinka, her three grandchildren, and the small but dedicated staff, Nerstrand keeps serving up the same excellent meats and cheeses that they have for over a century. Tune Town in Mankato BEST MUSIC STORE On the first of October, 25 years ago, Carl Nordmeier sold his first cassette tape out of his store in the Faribault Mall. He opened his second shop in Mankato in 1997 near the campus and moved downtown in 2010. Before Tune Town, if you’d have had to travel to Burnsville or farther into the metro for a decent music selection that couldn’t be found on the shelves in Target or Walmart. “I knew there was a good market for it, so I quit my job, took out a small loan and opened my first shop,” Nordmeier said. “I had some ideas for the music and movie section at my job, and they shot me down because it was the corporate way.” He reflects on when his very first customer walked in the door and said: “Now this is a record store.” His way proves to be successful considering his stores are thriving where many others like it have failed. His passion and understanding of the market and his customers are what keeps people returning to the store time and time again. He says the key to keeping thriving in this business is to change and adapt with the times and what people want. Tune Town is located at 630 N Riverfront Drive, Mankato. And that’s just one of the many reasons Harry Brown’s Family Automotive was voted the Best Place to Buy a Car in Southern Minnesota. “We’re honored and excited that our customers nominated and voted,” says Steve Brown. “We think our success is attributed to our employees–100 folks that come to work daily to serve our customers.” Harry Brown first got into the car-selling business in 1965 after his service in the Naval Reserves and opened up shop in 1968. Since then, Harry Brown’s Family Automotive has revved up Southern Minnesota’s car market, keeping the dealership in the family. After Harry and LaNaya Brown retired, they passed down their most prized possession to the second generation: Lisa Young, Mike Brown, Steve Brown, and Greg Brown. Located in Faribault, their wide variety of over 500 vehicles range from brand new to used, fitting every customer’s needs. They also offer services for all models, a parts and accessories proshop, ABRA Auto Body and Glass, and even a 24-hour car wash. Their array of services and standard of customer service has shown through. “We’ve been the place ‘Where Customers Send Their Friends’,” says Steve. “When customers are treated well, they will likely return, as well as referring their friends.” You can find all of your car service needs at 1747 Grant St. in Faribault. www.harrybrowns.com Honorable Mention: Cartime of Owatonna By Abby Patterson

After moving back to his hometown of Northfield, realtor and mother of Tim, Sonja Freeland, encouraged him to get back into the realtor game. Sports/Outdoors Hiller’s Last Call Liquor and Bait in Morristown BEST BAIT AND TACKLE STORE After working construction for a number of years John Hiller was ready for a career change. Six years later, the owner of Hiller’s Last Call Liquor and Bait in Morristown couldn’t be happier with his decision that helped him land the title of Best Bait and Tackle. “We’ve worked hard at it,” he said. “We do our best to have good bait and we clean it every day to make sure it’s strong. We also have a great line of clientele, but it’s taken it’s time.” Over the past six years Hiller has grown what began as an off-sale liquor store into a split building that now houses an off-sale liquor store with a bar and the bait and tackle shop. Merchants can purchase fishing licenses and fresh bait and tackle. “It’s been a good opportunity to grow,” Hiller said. Prepare yourself for an unparalleled golfing experience. The course is a pleasure for golfers of any skill level to play. Test your accuracy with its fairways, water hazards and sand traps; it has everything needed to challenge you and improve your game. Since 1910, Faribault Golf & Country Club has been open for play, and in 1956 Interlachen golf professional Willie Kidd designed the front nine-hole course, and Bob Carlson designed the back nine holes in 1966 where you can find the course today. This historic course has always been a key part of Minnesota golf, hosting the annual Minnesota PGA Pro-Am Tournament. They are proud to have hosted other prominent golf outings, such as the 1970 Minnesota State Open, the 1984 U.S. Golf Association Open, and the 1991 MGA Mid-Amateur. The classic game of golf has always been rooted in this beautiful, scenic course. Southern Minnesotans find this course to be a fun challenge for new and old players with its unique course design, the best golf amenities, and the staff’s passion for the game. Faribault Golf & Country Club was instrumental in the founding and establishment of the Minnesota Golf Association along with the Winona Country Club, Town and Country, the Minikahda Club, Rochester Golf & Country Club, Bryn Mawr and Merion Park. Since 1970, Faribault has also hosted the annual Minnesota PGA Pro-Am Tournament. Over the past 3 years FGC has invested $800,000 in course improvements with all new bunkers, several new tee boxes, pond expansion, and drainage to enhance the experience. The real star of the show at Faribault Golf Club is the unique course design, which manages to both challenge seasoned players while helping newcomers relax and enjoy learning this classic game. Our course is carved into the scenic, rolling hills of the open spaces in Faribault, Minnesota. It’s a picturesque course that smells of pine and regularly treats visitors to views of wildlife as they work to conquer our course. But Faribault Golf Club is more than just a top choice for a round of golf. It’s also a great venue for hosting the special days in your life, from a family reunion to an important corporate meeting to a

Cannon Valley Trail BEST BIKE TRAIL What happens when a 100 year old rail line is terminated by the railroad? In the case of the Cannon Valley trail, local individuals and cities turned it into something better: Southern Minnesota’s premier bicycle trail. The trail runs along the old Chicago Great Western line that once connected Red Wing to Mankato by train. In the mid-80s, it was turned into a paved trail for bicycle enthusiasts of all skill levels. The nearly 20 miles of trail features a wide variety of natural and man-made historic scenery. Adventurous bikers can go from prairie to bluffs to wetlands to the Cannon River in just a few short miles. Along the way, you’ll see highlights such as the Big Fill (a 400 foot ravine filled in back in 1916) and the Red Wing Archeological Preserve. The trail has received numerous awards over the years, most recently being recognized as a National Recreational Trail, and of course, Southern MN Scene’s Best Bike Trail of 2018. One-day wheel passes are $4, a season-long wheel pass is $25. During the winter, the trail is open to cross-country skiers and snowshoers, as well as limited biking, for an additional pass fee. www.cannonvalleytrail.com Honorable Mention: Sakatah Singing Hills State Trail By Tigger Lunney

Looking for the perfect southern Minnesota campground with the ideal mix of relaxation and fun? Look no further than Kieslers in Waseca. First opened by Kal and Barb in 1972, the campground has been kept in the family for three generations. Kristi Corchran is currently overseeing the campground. “I think what sets us apart from other campgrounds in the area is we offer planned activities every weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day,” Corchran says. “We like to give all of our guests a personalized experience.” They do a great job of providing this. They know most everything from the kids’ and parents’ names to the types of ice cream they like best. The staff also get involved in the activities they host on the weekends. Slime Slip and Slides, Bingo, and DJ’s on the dancefloor are just a taste of the fun to be had a Kiesler’s. The kids are able to be kids and play on the playground outdoors and not using electronics, and the parents are able to relax at their site or by the pool. Corchran and staff are dedicated to their work, and they make themselves available at all hours. “it’s the relationships we have with our customers that’s important to us, and we do all that we can to make sure they have a great experience.” Kiesler’s Campground and RV Resort is located at 14360 Old Highway 14 in Waseca. www.kieslers.com

Miscellaneous Defeat of Jesse James Days in Northfield BEST COMMUNITY EVENT Spanning several days, starting on the anniversary of the famed attempted bank robbery by the James-Younger gang, the Defeat of Jesse James Days brings thousands of people to Northfield to experience a variety of entertaining events. T.J. Heinricy, former coordinator for the DJJD events, noted that this is the third largest celebration in Minnesota, and they are dedicated to providing the best entertainment possible. “This is the only totally volunteer celebration in all of Minnesota and the history goes way back, everybody celebrates since we celebrate the town’s people, not the outlaws,” he said. For four days, the downtown area of Northfield becomes a hotspot of history and entertainment, made easier due to the central location for nearly every activity. “We couldn’t do it without volunteers and community members,” he added. So, if you like fair food, drinking, live music, watching kids compete against each other on little blown up horseys, watching actual live reenactments of the raid, rodeos, parades, carnivals, craft shows and a multitude of other engaging activities, then you best not miss next year’s Defeat of Jesse James Days. BEST BED & BREAKFAST fter their daughter went to college, Tami and Doug Schluter began to visit bed and breakfasts across the Midwest when an idea struck. It wasn’t long before they began searching for their dream home that they could make their own bed and breakfast. They spent more than six weeks searching for the perfect location to begin their journey, and they found just that with the Historic Hutchinson Bed and Breakfast in Faribault. “It took the whole winter to convert the house into the bed and breakfast but we opened on Mother’s Day 2008,” Tami fondly remembers. Since then, they’ve received a Recognition of Excellence from Hotels Combined, a Certificate of Excellence from Trip Advisor and have been named Best Bed and Breakfast by Southern Minn Scene 2018. “We are just so pleased with this accolade,” she said. “It’s nice to know that other people think you’re doing well with what you’ve got.” Visitors can stay in one of five rooms at the Historic Hutchinson House Bed and Breakfast, which is an 1892 Queen Anne Victorian home and listed on the National Register Historical Places. The house also boasts a dining room and main living room and parlor which may be used for group outings, bridal showers, meetings and receptions. From the gingerbread trim to the hardwood floors, the house offers much of the flavor it did in the 1890s. “A lot of these homes in greater Minnesota don’t make it,” said Realtor Jennifer Kirby. “Sometimes they get cookie-cuttered up. When houses become boarding houses in the past, the interiors get destroyed.” Kirby specializes in selling historic homes and has driven through many greater Minnesota towns to get a sense of the history there. She knew of the Hutchinson House long before she was connected with Tami Schluter, so when that happened, she knew she was perfect for the job.

“I knew right away,” she said. “It’s kind of my job to know the houses in different cities, especially the ones that are in really great shape.” The home was built in the Queen Anne, Victorian style in 1892 for John Hutchinson, an area businessman. Nicknamed the “Painted Lady,” the building is unique because of its three-story octagonal tower, wraparound porch, fireplaces and decorative staircases, among other things. John Hutchinson was born in Montreal, Canada in 1840 before he moved to the United States in 1851. He arrived in Rice County around 1859, before heading out in the military and returning in the 1880s. He went on to build the home that still stands proudly in Faribault today. And thanks to the Schluters, people from all over can come and enjoy it for themselves. Megan Rolloff Megan is a designer at The Design Element in the Mankato Design Center. She can help you with all your design needs from planning to product selection.

I

know, I know. Eighty percent of you are shaking your heads right now saying “Never!”, but just hear me out. Wallpapers of today are not what they used to be. My guess is that most of you SPONSORED BY object to The Design Element wallpaper because 1711 Premier Drive of the horrible Mankato, MN prospect of one 507.345.8708 day having to remove it. But the days of picking off microscopic pieces of paper until your hands

cramp into a claw are over. Today’s papers are made to be removable. There are a couple of different ways the industry has accomplished this. One is by making the face of the paper (the patterned portion) strippable. Get one corner loose and give it a good pull. The face of the paper will separate from the backing and peel off in one big piece. The backing that remains on the wall can be wetted with a sprayer and easily scraped away, also in large satisfying pieces. The other option is to go totally temporary with self-stick papers. These are often marketed to apartment dwellers. It is basically a giant sticker that can be put

anywhere and removed at will. Wallpaper is historically so much a part of our homes that it is almost futile to try and fight it. It is said that the earliest surviving piece of wallpaper dates all the way back to 1509. And that is if you only go back as far as patterned or scenic prints. Textural pieces are said to have been used centuries before that. In the early days, wallpaper was often used to replace tapestries. Only the extremely wealthy were able to afford tapestries, so papers were a way to get the same visual effect into slightly less opulent homes. As advances were made in the printing industry, wallpapers became more and more affordable the more efficiently they could be printed. This was made very evident during the Victorian era. Those people loved their wallpaper! Many times there would be 3, 4, or 5 different papers used in a single room. Some might say it was the most important interior finish at that time. In fact, one of the companies responsible for providing wallpapers to the Victorians is still active today: Thibaut Wallpaper & Fabrics. Thibaut is the oldest continuously operating wallpaper printer in the nation. They began in 1886. Thibaut is known in the interior design industry for high quality bold papers. out producing, but with a more updated color palette. As interior designers at The Design Element, Thibaut is one of our go-to lines when looking for that perfect paper. If you would like to see these pretty papers in person, feel free to visit us anytime and see for yourself how irresistible wallpaper can be. These large-scale, bold patterns are what we are seeing both being produced by manufacturers and used in residences. Instead of using the muted mini-print of the 80’s on every wall of every room, today we are seeing one prominent wall of a larger space covered in a bold print with high impact. Or, sometimes, covering all the walls in the smallest room in your house from floor to ceiling in a bright floral is the way to go; think powder room or walk-in closet. So, go ahead. Give into temptation. When you see that bright pink floral laundry room on Pinterest, or that sparkly starburst powder room on Houzz, don’t think “Oh my goodness, I could never”; think “That is fabulous! I must have it!” Take a risk and don’t take your home’s interior so seriously. You will be surprised what walking into a room that captures your eye and imagination can do for your mood. If your home is supposed to be a reflection of you, don’t we all want to be seen as a little fun, a little bold, and a little unexpected sometimes?

s summer shifts to autumn, our attention turns to sweaters, hot chocolate, football and leaf peeping. We sometimes complain about the cooler temps, raking and going back to school. But what if school involved a field trip to the pumpkin patch? To my 5-year-old granddaughter’s delight, her kindergarten class loaded the bus late September and took such a trip on a crisp fall morning. Grandma Liz – i.e., me – volunteered. And made some memories, too. Between a sea of colorful mums, pumpkins and apple trees, Sekapp Orchard, located at 3415 College View Road in Rochester, is a delightful and popular place to be this time of year. The orchard has over 170 acres of a variety of fruits and vegetables and is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Oct. 9. The family-run business has been owned by the Kappauf’s since 1962. They boast more than 7,000 apple trees and more than 25 varieties. No trip to the orchard is complete without a wagon ride and apple picking. Casey and her classmates scattered among the rows of trees and carefully plucked their cherry-red produce. Bags can be filled for as little as $6. I spotted a ripe Honeycrisp – my favorite – and bit in immediately. Tart. Sweet. All at once. Mmmm. My apple was quickly history. Colorful and curious gourds punctuated the landscape of a field and the children were instructed to select one. My granddaughter tugged at a perfectly round and petite pumpkin, breaking it from the earth. Seconds later she spotted one of greater interest but it was too late; grandma Liz reminded her that her choice – a good one -- had already been made. A sweaty sprint through the corn maze – and some swinging on the playground -- would round out Casey’s autumn adventure. She hugged her bag of apples and pumpkin to her chest and loaded the bus. Grandma Liz waved goodbye when the bus drove by, happy to see that Casey caught a glance before it was too late. Freelance writer and photographer Elizabeth Nida Obert, a former staff photographer for 18 years at the Rochester Post-Bulletin, has degrees in both writing and photography and is passionate about telling stories in words and pictures. She thrives on travel and adventure and is always looking forward to where the next open road – or door – will lead.

THE

The Haunting of Hill House Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault – Oct. 26 opening This classic psychological drama is just in time for Halloween! A chilling and mystifying study in mounting terror in which a small group of psychically receptive people are brought together in Hill House, a brooding, mid-Victorian mansion known as a place of evil and contained ill will. Based on the novel by Shirley Jackson and adapted for the stage by F. Andrew, this show was also made into the movie The Haunting. The Historic Hutchinson House B&B, located just blocks from the Paradise Center for the Arts, is the perfect place to eat, play and stay while exploring everything Faribault has to offer.

Ed Sheeran – U.S. Bank Stadium – Oct. 20 Ed Sheeran is as mainstream as it gets right now, offering music simultaneously catchy and inoffensive. He is also blessed; he seems to know exactly where he is going, and exactly how to get there. Where countless others fail to make an impression amid today’s information overload, Ed’s music and talent cut straight through. He has a poise that is as welcome as it is unusual in someone so young. He’s both utterly self-assured but still charmingly open. So if the British singer-songwriter is your cup of tea, joins tens of thousands of others at U.S. Bank as part of his first stadium tour. www.ticketmaster.com

THE BOOKWORM SEZ By TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER

The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein by Kiersten White

The Death of Hitler: The Final Word

by Jean-Christophe Brisard and Lana Parshina

Depth of Winter by Craig Johnson

November Road by Lou Berney

Terri Schlichenmeyer is a book reviewer based just across the river from SoMinn in LaCrosse, WI. She can be contacted at bookwormsez@gmail.com

Your future was laid out before. It’s all set. You have plans, and a method to execute them. Each step of your journey will progress in order, just as it’s meant to be, and any bumps in the road will be dealt with accordingly. As in “The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein” by Kiersten White, it will take monstrous focus. It had been much too long. Months had turned to years and though he’d promised to write and tell Elizabeth where he was, Victor rarely did so; indeed, this time, it had taken cunning and a delicate lie for her to find him in the Bavarian village of Ingolstadt. Now, she’d go to him. Surely, he must need her. She had no other choice. When she was but five years old, the Frankensteins had purchased Elizabeth from her stepmother, a cruel woman who lied and said that the fair, golden-haired Elizabeth was high-born. When brought to the Frankenstein estate,

Elizabeth understood that she was Madame Frankenstein’s best hope, just as she instantly knew that she never wanted to leave, that staying was based on taming young Victor and his mercurial ways. She had to win him over, then she had to make him think he needed her. Later, she had to keep him thinking so. Without it, Elizabeth would be unnecessary, tossed out with nothing to call her own. And so she spent her entire life at Victor’s side, keeping him happy. It was she who spun fanciful tales and crafted playful scenarios that kept Victor’s anger at bay. It was she who first befriended Henry Clerval; she who saved Justine, the perfect governess, for the little brothers that Victor never seemed to want around. Indeed, he needed her. But in finding Victor in Ingolstadt, Elizabeth discovered something else, something so horrible that she destroyed his laboratory and notes so that no one else would know the truth about him or what he’d done. Nobody would know the truth – least of all, she…. Sometimes, you like to sit down with a nice little gothic novel. And that’s just how “The Dark Descent of Elizabeth

Frankenstein” starts out: a nice little gothic novel that softly snarls as you turn the pages. And turn them, you will, because author Kiersten White makes you want to know exactly how Elizabeth fits into the classic tale of a mad scientist and his monster. Meanwhile, you’ll hate her; she’s vain and disdainful, the kind of character who’d sneer at you, no matter who you are. She’s also manipulative, in a modern way that’s surprising in a Victorian-set novel. Part of you will wish she gets eaten by the inevitable monster. Part of you will think she is the monster. All of you will be chilled. While this book may be shelved in the Young Adult section, it’s an equal delight for older readers who love the classic tale of evil science. “The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein” is the perfect creepy companion, if you’re familiar with the story before.

You’re on the edge of your chair. Curiosity is almost killing you; there’s something you need to know but knowledge may be impossible. Truth may be hidden, though you follow every clue and learn what you can. You’re hanging, and you know the truth is somewhere but as you’ll see in the new book “The Death of Hitler: The Final Word” by JeanChristophe Brisard and Lana Parshina, answers may be hard to come by. It had been a long journey to Moscow. For months, Brisard and Parshina had been gently petitioning the Russian government to allow them to see something that few others had ever seen. He, a Frenchman; she, a Russian-American, had been asking to see evidence of Adolph Hitler’s death, in the form of a piece of skull. Born in 1889, Hitler was long dead by then: legend had it

that he and his wife (some say mistress) poisoned themselves and their bodies were burned because Hitler was afraid of what the Russians would do to his corpse. Much like Elvis, however, sightings of a living Hitler were reported for years, post-WWII. Various spotters in several countries claimed to have seen the Nazi as an old man, but other documentsupported eyewitness accounts led Brisard and Parshina to firmly believe that Hitler’s last days were spent more than 25 feet below-ground in a bunker with a handful of men, women, and children, slowly losing his health and his mind. The Russians held the proof. It was early 2016 when Brisard and Parshina were finally allowed to view the evidence and documents. Immediately, they noticed that the cranial shard, the most tantalizing bit of clue, had clearly been pierced by a bullet that had probably caused its owner’s death. The owner, however, was unknown, and previous experts claimed it was from the skull of a younger woman. Other physical evidence tied the bone to Hitler. His own officers insisted that he’d taken cyanide. Dental evidence offered more clues. “The mystery about Hitler’s death,” say the authors, “would remain unsolved for decades.”

But is it solved now? Jean-Christophe Brisard and Lana Parshina seem to think so, although they point out that no witnesses are alive for interrogation. And yet, the evidence they’ve presented is intriguing enough to feel definitive and getting there is fascinating. “The Death of Hitler: The Final Word” rivals any fictional mystery, with plenty of back-story on Hitler and those who surrounded him in his last days. Those scenarios feel ominous, even though we know the outcome; they also sometimes feel too pat, as if they’re there to move the story along. What helps is that the authors pull readers into modern-day sleuthing often enough to keep their ground. This book is very well-sourced, and it’s perfect for historians, World War II buffs, and mystery-lovers. Parts of it do feel recreated here, but it possesses a reassurance of truth and a positive air of authority. “The Death of Hitler: The Final Word” is a very good book, though the final word may still be hanging.

Never take “no” for an answer. Persevere, that’s what you’re supposed to do. Work around roadblocks, try to find a way. There’s always another path to get what you want, so never take “no” for an answer – especially, as in the new novel “Depth of Winter” by Craig Johnson, the alternative is certain death. The postcard said it all: “Come.” It was a needless command; Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire would have “come” regardless of a pretty picture and a oneword scrawl: his long-time enemy, Tomás Bidarte, had killed Longmire’s son-in-law, had hurt Longmire’s wife, and now Bidarte had Longmire’s daughter, Cady. To get her back, there was no way Longmire wouldn’t “come” to the mountains south of the border and though the Feds wanted to help, carefully and cautiously, there wasn’t time for that. No, he’d get Cady back himself, with help from people his friend, Buck Guzmán, trusted: a pink

Caddy-driving man, a blind “seer,” a former-doctor-turnedagent, and a woman the Mexicans called “The Skin Witch.” He’d go… but getting there wouldn’t be easy. Bidarte and his men had assumed control of a small, nearly-inaccessible village near old sulfur mines, reachable via a heavily-guarded road or by mule on a narrow trail over a steep peak. Either way, Longmire and his people could easily be spotted by Bidarte’s sharpshooters at several places along their route. If they made it to the village without getting killed, they’d be somewhat masked by the village’s annual Dia de los Muertos celebration, perhaps masked enough to find and save Cady. But Bidarte was no fool, and his men knew that Longmire was nearby. Particularly murderous was Bidarte’s second-incommand, Culpepper, who possessed a good memory for faces and a cruel streak aimed right at Longmire – though the feeling was not mutual. Longmire was a sheriff, but he had personal standards. Unlike Bidarte’s men, he’d never been a killer for the sake of killing. To get Cady back, though, he was willing to learn how to be… It’s only a book. It’s only a book. It’s only a book.

Those are words to keep on your lips as you’re reading “Depth of Winter.” You’ll need them at every single twist and turn in this truly fine novel. Open the cover and the action starts almost immediately when author Craig Johnson puts Longmire in the presence of a blind man who sees everything – a conundrum that works surprisingly well. From there, we’re incongruously taken in a pink Cadillac to violently dangerous situations that are faintly reminiscent of old-time westerns, and gun smoke that happens to come from some very modern automatic rifles. Indeed, that’s what makes this book so compelling: it’s a super-fast-paced updated throw-back kind of novel that will appeal to lovers of old-school oaters and thrillers alike. It’s only a book. It’s only a book. It’s only a book. Remember those words and find “Depth of Winter” if you want action, horses, deserts, and cutthroat cowpokes with AK47s. Really, would you want to miss a book like that? No.

Catch me, if you can! And the chase began, one of you the pursuer, the other pursued, racing through park or playground, across the yard, down the sidewalk in a game that children have been playing forever. Catch me if you can, and escape wins the game. In the new book “November Road” by Lou Berney, escape means another day to live. On the day after President Kennedy was shot, everything became crystal-clear to Frank Guidry. For years, he’d been Carlos Marcello’s right-hand man, his fixer, his enforcer, the guy Marcello relied on, but something was up. On the day after Kennedy was shot, Carlos’ assistant, Seraphine, told Guidry that he was being sent to Houston to get rid of a car that could connect Marcello to the assassination. Guidry knew the rest: get rid of the car, then they’d get rid of him. And so he escaped.

When she was dating Dooley, Charlotte Roy knew he drank too much. Two daughters later, too many nights waiting for Dooley to come home, and Charlotte had enough. The President was dead and so was her marriage. Grabbing her daughters and the family dog, she left Woodrow, Oklahoma and headed for California. When a guy like Carlos Marcello tells you to find someone, that’s what you do, and finding Guidry should been easy for Barone, Marcello’s newest fixer. Sure, there were wrong trails and a little matter of a badly injured hand but he was smarter than Guidry. Finding Guidry was only a matter of time. Frank Guidry couldn’t relax for a second. Seraphine knew he’d fled Houston and she likely knew how. He’d tried to keep his head low but he figured that Marcello would know what he was driving long before he hit the Texas-New Mexico border. To avoid the guy who was undoubtedly tailing him, he needed to find some sort of disguise, some way to not stick out. He needed to become a family man, quick. A future divorcee and two kids was just the ticket. When was the last time you had a manicure?

Never mind. You won’t have any fingernails left to manicure when you read this book. You’ll have them all chewed off. That’s because “November Road” is a nail-biter from the first chapter. By then, author Lou Berney has prepared a deliciously scandalous possibility for his readers, centered in a historically unforgettable backdrop, in a cultural-turningpoint year, run by characters who kill as casually as they walk. Those guys are terrifyingly ice-cold, in fact, and their presence will make you want to check the other rooms in your home - and if that’s not enough to keep you perched nervously on the edge of your recliner, put a lovely young housewife-almost-feminist innocently in the midst of this tale, add national turmoil and a slinky female mobster with absolutely zero morals, and you’ve got a book that you’ll stay up all night to read. You’ve got a book you’ll carry around with you. In “November Road,” you’ve got the perfect escape.

You’ve been thinking about it for weeks. That idea you’ve got in your head won’t let you go. It’s too intriguing: it solves a problem, helps people, and it could be a money-maker. So what next? In the new book “You Are a Mogul” by Tiffany Pham, you’ll see how to elevate yourself from see-opportunity to C-suite in your own business. When she was just 14 years old, Tiffany Pham knew what her future would look like. By that time, she had moved with her parents from Paris , France , to Texas ; had learned a new language and culture; and was finessing the fine art of fitting in. Those were all challenges that shaped her, and the “powerful influence” of her parents helped her to aim for a life in business. If you have the itch to be an entrepreneur, Pham says, the first thing to do is to look for “examples to follow,” but not necessarily those connected to a business setting. People

who model patience and kindness are good to have around, too. Have a plan in mind and be “strategic,” but also be flexible. Rigidity will only make you frustrated when faced with obstacles, and it’ll cause you to miss opportunities. On that note, you may hear “no” a lot, but say “yes” even more. That willingness to tackle any task “will become your calling card.” There’s a right way and a wrong way to accept a job, Pham explains, but you should also know when to ask for more and when to take less. Too, understand why you’d want to take a stepping-stone job, what to expect from it, and how to “kill it.” Find what makes you different and “use it to your advantage.” Remember that your off-work hours offer opportunities to nurture your passion and launch a business. And create a team that will grow with you; your success depends on them. “You Are a Mogul” contains a lot of tantalizing possibilities… and a few ideas that may be impossible. For sure, author and Mogul mogul Tiffany Pham’s book pops on page after page with bold-print nuggets that may

seem simplistic but that also ring with truth and inspiration and can easily be embraced by any would-be entrepreneur. Helpfully, those bits are easy to find and absorb quickly, giving time-strapped readers the immediate help they need and the room for further learning, later. On the other hand, Pham’s schedule – which she holds up as exemplary time-use – may be perceived as unattainable to some: she often thrives, for example, on three hours of sleep per night, admitting that not everyone has that ability. Furthermore, this book is of dubious use for introverts, and for readers with permanently limited resources. The good news is, like many books in this very wide genre, there’s no rule that says you have to embrace it all. This is better-than-average; if you need it, use what you can from “You Are a Mogul.” If not, reject what you can’t, but give yourself something to think about.
