“Our mentality on the golf course needs to stay positive and we will be just fine.” — Jake Piller

NAMES TO WATCH

Khrystjan Petersen, eighth-grader — Petersen is a player coach Jake Piller is especially excited about. He praised Petersen’s work ethic and dedication over the offseason.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Bethlehem Academy golf coach Jake Piller is confident that this season can be a good one for his team. But with only two returning players from the varsity team a year ago, this year will be one of growth for the Cardinals. The team goal will remain the same as it’s been for years now: beat United South Central at sections, as the Cardinals have finished runners-up to the Rebels each of the last three seasons.

FARIBAULT HIGH SCHOOL BOYS GOLF KEY PLAYERS

Austin Dickey, senior — Dickey was the lone Falcon to qualify for the second round of sections last year and was the team’s top golfer as a junior. He returns with a strong group of seniors and looks to improve scores as the weather clears up. Dickey led the Falcons in their first two meets this year, shooting 83s in a meet at Rosemount and at the Harry O’Connor invite. KC Kitzman, senior — Another of the Falcons’ seniors, Kitzman has been a varsity regular for years now, and had a good round at the Harry O’Connor invite at The Legacy Golf Course last week, tying for the team lead with an 83.

eyes a middle-of-the-pack finish in the Big 9 this year. Austin Dickey, KC Kitzman and Austin Andreas lead a group of experienced golfers, and coach Al Gora said he expects that senior leadership to fuel a possible fourth- or fifth-place finish in the conference. Dickey just missed out on all-Big 9 honors last year after earning them as a sophomore, and he’s led the Falcons in scoring the first two meets of the season. He was the lone Falcon to make the cut for the second round of the section championships last year. With junior Kyle Gare, senior Joel Grinnell and underclassmen Derek Bokelmann and Peter Bostwick, the Falcons have some depth and should see some competition to slot in as the next golfers behind Dickey, Kitzman and Andreas. Gora said rounds in the low 330s for the team score and low 80s to high 70s should be reasonable expectations for the Falcons this year. Taking advantage of the team’s few home meets will be crucial.

MOVED ON

N/A — All four of the Falcons’ regular varsity scorers return this year.

NAMES TO WATCH

Austin Andreas, senior — Andreas will look to build off a solid first year of varsity and improve during his senior season. He’s been third in scoring for the Falcons in their first two meets of 2015. Peter Bostwick, sophomore — Bostwick could be in the running to find his way into the top four scorers for the Falcons. He shot a 96 in the Falcons’ season opener, the fourth-lowest FHS round, and had a 94 at the Harry O’Connor invite, the fifth-lowest on the team.

Coachspeak “I have a nice veteran squad this year. We have a nice nucleus of sophomores, juniors and seniors. So I’m really hoping for some senior leadership out of my boys, because most of them have been on the team for three years or more.” — Al Gora

FARIBAULT HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS GOLF KEY PLAYERS

Hannah Bokelmann, junior — Bokelmann finished her 2014 season on a high note with a 97 at the second day of a windy Section 1AAA championships. She participated in an off-season golf program with teammate Cora Showers, and coach Chris Dibble expects to see improvement from the two. Annika Schmitz, senior — The lone senior on the squad, Schmitz was one of three FHS golfers to make the second day of the Section 1AAA championships last year.

MOVED ON

Franny Ziegler, Jordan Nusbaum — The pair ended their season at the first day of sections last year, and their contributions will be missed on what was a close-knit team.

Coachspeak

“I am looking forward to another great year with a great group of girls. We have a great mix of experienced and new players. It has already been fun in the first couple weeks watching the girls help each other out and develop a love for the game.” — Chris Dibble

Casey Gillen, junior — Gillen was the third Falcon to make the cut for the second day of the section championships last year. She had some strong performances near the end of last season, including a career-best 98 at the conference championships. The field — With eight new players, Dibble hopes to see a few pick up the game quickly and contribute this season.

Matt Welborn and Logan Gregersen — The Falcons’ No. 1 doubles team from last year, coach Jeff Anderson described their style of play as scrappy yet effective. They won the most points for the team in the regular and postseason. Nick Anderson — The Falcons’ No. 1 singles player from last year, Anderson is on an extended exchange program and will not be playing this season.

Jeff Anderson’s second year at the helm of the Faribault boys tennis team starts with similar goals as last season — focusing on improvement. The Falcons have a young roster and Anderson said about 80 percent of the team has less than two years of experience playing tennis. The focus in a tough Big 9 is not on scoreboard results, but on any gains each player can make in each match played. Anderson said the team has bonded quickly, and no matter what the early results have been, the effort has been there every time. Expect the Falcons’ scores and results to improve as the season goes on.

Ren Ross, sophomore — Ross has played at No. 1 singles in the Falcons’ duals so far, and will look to handle the opposition’s top player every match. Ray Woo, senior — The lone senior on the team, Woo has slotted in at No. 3 singles thus far and is one of the few upperclassmen on the team.

The sophomores — FHS has a sophomore-heavy roster with players like Alex Bice, Zak Krueger, Sean Paczosa, Muhammed Tafida and Carl Ziegler filling out the lineup. Their improvement as the season goes on will be big, for the team and for themselves as they gain more experience in the sport. Alex Chou, freshman — Chou’s hustle has led to some nice results in doubles play, and he teamed with Paczosa to get the Falcons’ first individual match win of the season, against Mankato East at No. 3 doubles.

NAMES TO WATCH

It’s a bigger, tougher conference this year for Faribault and everyone else in the Big 9. The addition of Red Wing, a powerhouse program in girls golf means there’s a new top dog. The Wingers have 15 state appearances as a team and haven’t missed the tournament this decade. They’re also the opponent in the Falcons’ first dual meet this season. Coach Chris Dibble said he’d like to see FHS finish in the top six in the conference. The Big 9 championships are May 18 at Eastwood Golf Course in Rochester. A group of returning junior letter-winners should lead the Falcons, in Hannah Bokelmann, Casey Gillen and Cora Showers. Senior Annika Schmitz and junior Megan Hedenstrom will also return for a relatively experienced FHS squad.

Nate Emge — A FDN All-Area and all-conference honorable mention selection last year, Emge had three wins and a 2.77 ERA while leading the team with 45 1/3 innings pitched. Evan Jensen — An all-conference, all-section and all-area selection, Jensen hit .360 to lead the team, along with 15 RBIs and 15 runs scored. Jensen also pitched to the tune of a 3.16 ERA when he wasn’t at third base.

NAMES TO WATCH

Josh Nawrocki, senior — Nawrocki, a senior captain, gives the Falcons another veteran pitching option and will play outfield too. Joe Miller, senior — A returning starter, Miller will play infield and coach Charlie Lechtenberg expects a big year from him and Nawrocki.

SEASON OUTLOOK

KEY PLAYERS

Porter Sartor, senior — Sartor, one of the team’s four senior captains, is the Falcons’ top returning pitcher in terms of innings pitched. In his second start of the season, he struck out 11 batters over six shutout innings in a win over Austin. Sartor also led FHS in home runs last year. Egan Bonde, senior — Bonde returns at first base for the Falcons and will also help anchor the pitching staff. The southp a w brings experience to the field and mound.

Charlie Lechtenberg’s first season at the helm of the Faribault baseball team got off to a good start. The senior-heavy team looked the part of a veteran squad in a walk-off win over North Branch to open the season. The Falcons have 10 seniors, including captains Egan Bonde, Mitch Nagal, Josh Nawrocki and Porter Sartor. Lechtenberg, a 2006 FHS grad, is happy with the leadership the group brings, and hopes to be competitive in a tough Big 9. Nagal returns at catcher and Tyler Becker will add speed after a junior campaign that saw him hit .351 with 22 doubles and eight stolen bases. Rivalry matchups against teams like Owatonna will be big. A May 7 date with Northfield has added importance now that the Raiders are also conference foes. FHS will rely on its experience to pick up wins, and has ground out gutty victories in two of its first three PORTER SARTOR games this season.

Coachspeak “I am very excited to start my first year with a great group of student athletes. We have a great core of seniors who are great leaders with a lot of varsity experience.” — Charlie Lechtenberg

FARIBAULT ACADEMIES BASEBALL KEY PLAYERS

Christian VonRuden, senior — An all-conference selection as a junior, VonRuden hit .458 with seven RBIs. He also picked up 11 stolen bases and scored 14 runs. Von Ruden also picked up 28 innings pitched while carrying a 4.69 earned run average. Kollin Hanson, junior — The Cardinals’ best offensive player, Hanson hit .387 and led the team in runs batted in with 29 while picking up five doubles and two home runs. Hanson was second on the team with 32.2 innings pitched and had an earned run average of 4.29. Hanson also earned all-conference honors.

K O L L I N

Kyle Novak — Novak, the team’s centerfielder was one of the top offensive players for the Cardinals in 2014. He hit .472 with three home runs, seven doubles and 23 runs driven in, and was an FDN All-Area selection, in addition to claiming team MVP and all-Gopher Conference honors. Connor Martin — Martin was the team’s top pitcher in 2014, pitching 47 innings with an earned run average of 2.96, holding opponents to a .257 batting average while striking out 31 against nine walks issued.

Peyton Glenzinski, junior — An all-conference performer as just a sophomore, Glenzinski hit .375 with 11 runs batted in. He also hit two home runs and scored 20 runs and earned FDN All-Area honors at catcher, sharing the team’s most-improved award. Coachspeak

“We have good players returning and our team chemistry will be a big factor in determining our success this season”— Scott Hanson

After a season in which the team went 8-13, head coach Scott Hanson said the team’s goal is to make a run at the conference and section titles. Hanson said one of the keys for the team will be its ability to develop chemistry and bond as a team. There is clearly a lot of talent on the team. Christian VonRuden and Kollin Hanson are the team’s top pitchers and hitters, and they have experience at important positions such as catcher with Peyton Glenzinski and at third base with Pete Clark. Replacing Kyle Novak and Connor Martin won’t be easy — Novak was named team MVP, and Martin pitched the most innings by far of any pitcher last season — but if the returning players do what they are capable of and they get solid play from a few of the less experienced players, improving on their 8-13 record is a very realistic goal. Matchups in the conference against Medford and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown will be important, as the Cardinals started the season dropping their first two games. With a talented and veteran squad, picking things back up shouldn’t be too tall a task.

Thompson won some big games and looks to improve on a 3.22 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings. Dallas McBroom, Brody Boran, sophomores — In their first year on varsity, McBroom and Boran will fill roles for t h e Bucs. McBroom’s versatility will have him slotted as a utility player, while Boran will do much of the work behind the plate. Both will also pitch.

SEASON OUTLOOK

In his second year at the helm of the Waterville-Elysian-Morristown baseball program, coach Sam Stier expects the Buccaneers to take a shot at the conference title before a run in the playoffs. Stier has three things the team is focused on: doing little things right, hustle and consistency. And with some good returning experience, the Bucs should be competitive. Senior shortstop Ben Boran returns after hitting .400 last year, and Stier said he likes how Reid Ayers, Brandon Kewatt, Christ Pettis and Tyler Tegmeier have looked in practice. Junior Dalton Grose will be looked to lead the pitching staff after posting 36 strikeouts in just 21 1/3 innings pitched last year. Boran and Jason VanHoudt, the team’s senior captains, should provide results and leadership. The Gopher Conference should be tough, but even with the Bucs eying a title, they’re not looking too far ahead. Improving on a 6-9 record will be a goal taken one pitch at a time, said Stier.

As a junior, she swiped 25 bases to lead the area, and hit .345 en route to All-Big 9 honorable mention status. Claire Drentlaw, freshman — Drentlaw pitched 48 innings last season while striking out 39, good for fourth in the area.

Kenzie Bussert, Genesis Carreon, seniors — The Falcons’ other two seniors, coach Chris Silber said the two made strides improving last year and expects even more growth and leadership from the pair. McKayla Armbruster, eighth-grader — Armbruster will also pitch for FHS, after a rookie season where she was fifth in the area with a 10.36 ERA and 19 strikeouts in a team-high 52 innings pitched.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Last season, the growing pains were evident for a Falcons squad that featured four middle-schoolers. A year later, the Faribault softball team is still relatively young, but definitely more seasoned. Take for instance, the fact FHS won its first game of the season 6-4 over Austin. The Falcons didn’t pick up their first win of 2014 until the 13th game of the year. Second-year coach Chris Silber said he expects the players to continue to improve and take a team-first mentality. After a 1-17 campaign last year, the Falcons have experienced plenty of lows, and are ready to show how much further they’ve come. FHS has three seniors this year to lead the way, highlighted by centerfielder Lexus Tatge, who’s fresh off a season where she stole 25 bases. Pitchers Claire Drentlaw and McKayla Armbruster are still young, a freshman and eighth-grader, respectively, but showed potential last year and should continue to grow. Drentlaw struck out 10 in her season debut this year against Austin. finished as one of the team’s top hitters. Should improve on a .295 average and nine RBIs from last season while starting at third.

SEASON OUTLOOK

Unlike last season, when Waterville-Elysian-Morristown had to replace its entire starting lineup, the Buccaneers return some experience in 2015. Coach Crystal Lamont expects the Bucs to compete with all its opponents and maybe avenge some close losses from last season — five came by two runs or less.

A two-time All-Region 2AA performer, Schultz is a senior captain for the Cardinals and should be a steady presence at shortstop. She and Tess Glenzinski should trade time at pitcher and third base.

MOVED ON

Caity Angell — Angell was the team’s top pitcher over the last few seasons, earning all-conference honors multiple times. Replacing her innings will be the biggest challenge for the Cardinals, who will need a new workhorse pitcher for the first time in four years. Tabitha Anderson — Anderson was the starting first basemen and one of the team’s better hitters. Ramontica Langfeldt — Langfeldt was a three-year starter at second base and gave the team a speed element and steady defensive presence up the middle.

NAMES TO WATCH

Maddi Rendler, sophomore — In her second year on varsity, Rendler has already come up big, with a key home run in the Cardinals’ season opener. A versatile defender, as well. Grace Viland, freshman — Viland gives the team an excellent defensive presence behind the plate and has potential to be a high quality hitter. Tess Glenzinski, freshman — Glenzinski will pitch alongside Meyer and play third when not in the circle. She’s already proved once that her bat can make an impact, delivering a crucial double in a walk-off win over New RichlandHartland-Ellendale-Geneva in the first home game of the season.

SEASON OUTLOOK

The Faribault Academies softball team returns six starters from the 2014 season, and while replacing Caity Angell, Tabitha Anderson and Ro Langfeldt won’t be easy, there are talented players still on the roster. Led by senior Payton Schultz, the young Cardinals earned tough wins in their first two games by hitting like a veteran squad — FA scored 25 runs in its first two games. SEASON OUTLOOK

Bethlehem Academy’s track and field team returns a solid chunk of players with at least section experience. Since coach Brent Zabel has taken over, the program has gotten more competitive each season, and the hope is that they can continue to take steps by improving on personal bests and sending more kids to section finals and beyond. Drew Busch, Kyle Ell, Shanna Matajcek and Payton Putrah all have excellent shots at not only getting to sections, but also state this upcoming season. Ell qualified for state last year as a junior in the high jump. The key for Zabel, in his sixth season coaching at BA, is to build a culture of winning. He’s hoping the kids will improve and that in turn will lead to better results and more kids coming out for track as the program continues to grow.
