HISTORY St. Peter’s rich history grew from a settlement originally called Rock Bend in the early 1850s. The community is one of the oldest cities in Minnesota, and it serves as the county seat of Nicollet County. The Dakota Indians were the first to live in the area, settling along the Minnesota River and utilizing a natural ford, which came to be known as Traverse des Sioux. In 1851, an historic treaty was signed on this site by the Dakota Indians and the United States government, ceding 24 million acres of land to the federal government. The Nicollet County Historical Society offers troves of information on this event. St. Peter is said to be founded by Captain William D. Dodd in 1853. The current name was provided by members of the St. Peter Co., based in St. Paul. Willis Gorman, the second territorial governor of Minnesota, was a member. A plan to make St. Peter the state capital in 1857 very nearly succeeded. But state lore claims an original bill to make St. Peter the capitol disappeared until after the legislative session, halting efforts to replace St. Paul. As the community grew over the years, it absorbed the community of Traverse des Sioux to the north. When the Civil War began in 1861, St. Peter provided soldiers for many military units. One of the community’s founders, Capt. Asgrim K. Skaro, was killed during the Battle of Nashville in December 1864 while leading his company. Others participated in the Dakota War that began in 1862. St. Peter provided four other men who served in military units at various times and also served as Minnesota governor. Henry A. Swift was in a local militia and Horace Austin served in a Minnesota unit in the Dakota War. Andrew R. McGill served in the Civil War. John A. Johnson served in the Minnesota

National Guard. The first state hospital in Minnesota began in St. Peter in 1866, initially using a large building downtown until the first building on the current site was completed. Today, the facility is known as the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center and employs about 1,400 people. Gustavus Adolphus College came to the community in the 1870s. Its Swedish roots helped it work with the Nobel Foundation to establish an annual Nobel Conference that brings outstanding scientists and thousands of visitors to the campus. With very few exceptions, St. Peter has been the home of the Nicollet County Fair since the mid-1800s. The site also hosts car shows, dog shows, rodeos and other events. St. Peter has rebuilt after several disasters. The community experienced a large fire in 1887 that destroyed a considerable portion of its business district. A tornado in 1924 destroyed or damaged several buildings. The Minnesota River has also flooded frequently, with especially severe floods in 1881, 1951 and 1965. And in 2018, the community observed and celebrated its rebuilding with the 20th anniversary of the 1998 tornado, which tore through the heart of St. Peter, as well as the community of Comfrey and Le Center. One life was lost. Hundreds of structures were affected; many could not be repaired. Thousands of trees were also uprooted and destroyed. St. Peter has recovered and is in better shape than ever. Today, the community is proud of how it reshaped itself, hitting the reset button in some ways and taking full advantage of the challenge and opportunity that was presented. The city’s rebuild has served as a model for others, and city officials have often been called on to assist with response to other disasters.
AGRICULTURE
St. Peter’s economic roots run deep in diverse ways, but few businesses are as closely tied to its history as the agricultural community. Nicollet County’s rich farmland places itself among Minnesota’s top crop-producing regions. Nicollet County agricultural land totals some 250,000 acres. While St. Peter and North Mankato, on the county’s east side, dominate population, the central and western regions of Nicollet County -- near and around the communities of Nicollet, Lafayette, Courtland and Norseland -- are rich in farmland. The most recent statistics show the county ranks in the top quarter statewide in total agricultural production, including the second highest bushel per acre corn production in the state, according to a 2020 USDA report. One of Nicollet County’s top agricultural rankings is actually in the pork industry; Nicollet and several nearby counties frequently rank among the top producers in that industry. According to the most recent Minnesota
Census of Agriculture in 2017, the total value of products sold in Nicollet County from agricultural operations was $339.31 million, with net income after expenses at $88.61 million. Its rich farmland helped contribute to record crop production throughout Minnesota in 2015. Record statewide corn production topped 1.4 billion bushels, while soybean production also hit record levels at over 364 million bushels. Three key farm regional and statewide organizations joined together in 2015, each celebrating 100 years in the region — the Nicollet County Farm Bureau, University of Minnesota Extension Service and United Farmers Cooperative (formerly Lafayette Farmers Co-op). Nicollet County agriculture is part of the state’s significant presence in the United States markets, with over $21 billion total, according to the department. Minnesota is the fourth largest agricultural exporting state in the U.S., topping $7 billion, accounting for one-third of the state’s total export market.

HEALTH CARE River’s Edge Hospital and Clinic continues in an amazing growth pattern and recently put the finishing touches on a $33.8 million renovation and expansion. Former CEO George Rohrich called 2017 “maybe the hospital’s best year ever” in recapping the finances. Rohrich retired at the end of 2019. The newest CEO, Paula Meskan, was promoted from within in early 2021. She began her tenure at the top in March 2021. The addition and renovation to River’s Edge added eight patient rooms and two operating rooms and moved the entrance from Dodd Road to an eastern facing one on North Sunrise Drive. Officials hope the hospital will be able to accommodate more surgeries, more specialties and have rooms for emergency room admittances and swing beds. The hospital is currently licensed for up to 25 beds. The hospital had posted a strong cash positive year in 2015 and has ever since. That’s due in part to an ongoing partnership with Mankato’s Orthopedic and Fracture Clinic. The hospital is the site for hip, knee and shoulder replacements. Spine surgeries have also started there. The city-owned facility is a Level IV Trauma Center, providing emergency room physicians, nurses, paramedics and technicians 24 hours a day, and has also expanded its Urgent Care services. River’s Edge Hospital also provides emergency ambulance services to the greater St. Peter area. Funding is provided in part by the River’s Edge Hospital Foundation. For more information, see riversedgehealth. org. The River’s Edge campus, on St. Peter’s northwest side, also includes the Mayo Clinic Health System in St. Peter, which offers services on the west wing of the facility. More at

Among other St. Peter health care facilities is the state operated Regional Treatment Center, established in 1866 and located on over 400 acres of land on the city’s south edge.
Health and Human Services County-based health care services are provided by Nicollet County Social Services, now located in the new Health and Human Services building. But boundless activities pepper the community for all ages, with a growing trails and sidewalk system for walkers, expanding parks system for summer recreational activities. The city’s new Community Spirit Park and Gault Park host hundreds of youth soccer games and practices, as do other facilities. Jefferson Park’s softball fields are busy spring through fall. And Veterans Memorial Park hosts baseball games of several age groups, and it’s the site of the St. Peter outdoor swimming pool, plus tennis and pickleball courts, basketball hoops, ice rinks and a soccer area. It’s 14 acres and is a hot spot of activity during the summer. Sidewalk upgrades provide better safety for walkers, visitors and fans to games. The new press box above the first base dugout at Veterans Memorial Park’s baseball field continues the upgrades to that complex.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT St. Peter has a rich history as an arts and heritage town, proud of its backstory and culture. And it’s growing in regional recognition and activities. At its hub is Minnesota Square Park, which hosts some of the most popular music and arts venues in southern Minnesota, including the Ambassadors Blues Fest in June, the OldFashioned Fourth of July celebration and Rock Bend Music Festival in September. At the center of Minnesota Square Park is an aesthetically pleasing and usable pavilion, newly opened in 2019. Up the hill in St. Peter is Gustavus Adolphus College’s Hillstrom Museum of Art and its Theater & Dance and Music departments, which offer a wealth of events and performances by students and guest artists that are open to the public. In 2020, a brand new black box theater opened on campus, creating an alternative option to the standard theater space. Find a calendar of events or purchase tickets online at gustavus.edu/finearts. Another new addition to the community arts and performance spaces is the 750-seat auditorium in the new St. Peter High School. The SPHS theater department opened the venue with the rousing, sell-out performances of the musical “Footloose” in November 2017 and also hosted the 20th anniversary observance of the 1998 St. Peter tornado. It continues to be a popular destination for theater and music, both from high school and outside performers. The arts flourish throughout the St. Peter school district and private schools in St. Peter with choir, band and drama performances throughout the year. Every year, St. Peter celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with a whole lot of green in a community parade, plus some fun events around town.
26
St. Peter Community & Visitors Guide 2022
Oktoberfest is another annual event in St. Peter that is held in the downtown each year, celebrating all things German, especially beer. Another popular option in the St. Peter community has been the emergence of 2nd Story Comedy Club, which has moved its venue to the American Legion Club at 229 W. Nassau St. The St. Peter Choral Society is entering its 40th year. There are no auditions or membership fees to join. For more information, see the website at saintpeterchoralsociety.org. Like to dance? St. Peter Just for Kix offers classes for students from preschool through high school. Call 507-276-8989. There’s also a long list of events — from films to music — at Nicollet County Historical Society’s Treaty Site History Center. Find the schedule at nchsmn.org/events. New venues throughout the community include The Capital Room at 419 S. Minnesota Avenue. The renovated former armory building dates back to 1913 and is growing in popularity, with use for weddings and special events. And we can’t fail to mention the long history of the Govenaires Drum and Bugle Corps. The Govenaires is a highly competitive performing arts organization which calls St. Peter home and has entertained crowds across the country since 1927.
Arts Center of Saint Peter The Arts Center of Saint Peter, which offers performances, exhibits and classes, continues to shine within the community. The center’s staff and volunteers are frequent participants at the many St. Peter festivals and community events. Its Souper Bowl fundraiser in late winter is growing in popularity, with some 400 handcrafted
pottery bowls available for purchase. Throughout the year, the center spearheads fun community-wide events, such as the popular Jesus Christ Superstar revival and singalong. Tell Me A Story is an ongoing storytelling and musical program that gives residents a chance to open up and get to know others in an intimate environment. Founded in 1979, the center was established to share and cultivate the fine arts through year-round exhibitions, performances, education and outreach. The center features two galleries with new exhibitions approximately every month, spotlighting regional artists, writers and musicians, to solo and group shows by artists of national renown. The lower gallery also serves as an intimate performance venue with seating for up to 100. A new upstairs space has opened up fiber arts opportunities at the nonprofit, including weaving, knitting and crotcheting. Classes have been offered through partnerships with St. Peter Community & Family Education, and also individually by Arts Center staff, taught by area artists committed to helping students and adults experience and enjoy the creative process. Classes, including those at its heralded Clay Center, range from introductory sessions for children, teens and adults
to drawing, printmaking and weaving. The Arts Center has also teamed up with the Minnesota Security Hospital and state Department of Human Services to host performances and shows by patients at the St. Peter facility. Another new development spearheaded by Arts Center staff and the city of St. Peter’s parks department is plans to develop an arts garden and sculpture park at Levee Park, highlighting the works of and inspired by former St. Peter resident Paul Granlund. Visit the center at artscentersp.org or call 507-931-3630.
Hillstrom Museum of Art Located in the lower level of the college’s C. Charles Jackson Campus Center, the museum is named for 1938 Gustavus graduate, the Rev. Richard L. Hillstrom, who donated many of the works in its collection. The museum is free and open daily to the public while classes are in session. Visit gustavus.edu/finearts/hillstrom or call 507-933-7200.

It features three exhibit rooms, displaying Nicollet County’s rich and intriguing history. Exhibits also interpret the 1851 Treaty of Traverse des Sioux between the Dakota people and white settlers. The museum shop features a variety of memorabilia, including local and related history books for adults and children. Extensive archives provide information about the historical heritage of the area. The archives contain manuscripts, family histories, photographs, church and cemetery records, obituaries and microfilmed newspapers from Nicollet County. Maps and several publications are available to researchers and genealogists. Admission is free for Nicollet County Historical Society and Minnesota Historical Society members. OLD-FASHIONED
4TH OF JULY St. Peter’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July celebrated its 50th year in 2021 (it took a year off in 2020 because of the pandemic). Fourth of July takes place on a Monday in 2022, so it’ll be a perfect opportunity to get in a long weekend. Residents roll out the red, white and blue carpet during the Old Fashioned event, held annually at Minnesota Square Park following the grand parade. The event typically brings in over 10,000 revelers to the community. The festivities, sponsored by the St. Peter Area Chamber of Commerce, begin with the
10 a.m. parade that starts at Washington and Broadway avenues before winding its south to Elm Street and Minnesota Square Park. Thousands, young and old, dressed in their patriotic finest, welcome the parade — complete with area marching bands, local organizations and the Shriners and their mini cars — one of the largest in the state. But that’s not nearly all. An afternoon picnic in the city’s beloved park includes food vendors, a hot dog eating contest, a beer tent, kids activities, music, classic cars and fun for the whole family. There’s even a Freedom Fun Run, which features a 5K and 8K race with chip timing. For the youngsters, there’s a 1-Mile Kids Run and a Toddler Trot. But what would the Fourth of July be without a grand finale? When the sun goes down, the sky above the Nicollet County Fairgrounds lights up with fireworks, a fitting end to a perfect day.

NICOLLET COUNTY FAIR The tradition of the county fair is alive and well in Nicollet County, creating memories here since 1872. The fair takes place in August at the Nicollet County Fairgrounds at West Union Street in St. Peter. The traditionally popular demolition derby, tractor pull and talent shows are expected to return in 2022, as will plenty of other fun activities. Of course, there will be plenty of animals, carnival rides, exhibits and that irresistible fair food. Admission is free, though there is a small fee to park on the fairgrounds While the March 1998 tornado that ripped through St. Peter devastated the fairgrounds, today’s fairgoers will notice the restored barns and other buildings ready to welcome visitors. Senior citizens are special guests of the fair on Friday, when two outstanding Nicollet

County seniors are recognized annually at a special program. Children’s Day at the fair is Saturday, with special entertainment and reduced price tickets for carnival rides. Sunday, the fair’s final day, is set aside to recognize Nicollet County’s century and sesquicentennial farms, those that have remained in one family for 100 or 150 years, respectively. The fair features 4-H exhibits and demonstrations, live music, an amateur talent show, and livestock and animal judging. Midway amusements run each afternoon and late into the evening, providing thrills for those who love to ride. Bingo is a regular fair feature, as are an assortment of food stands and the Jaycees Beer Garden. Be sure to stop in and experience the fun. Rock Bend Folk Festival SEPTEMBER
It’s been called a two-day celebration of southern Minnesota’s arts and artists — that’s how Rock Bend Folk Festival is best described. But the popularity of the festival now brings in acts from throughout the United States. It’s billed as “What a music festival is
supposed to be.” Nearly two dozen acts, performing bluegrass, folk and jazz can be heard throughout the annual festival that showcases the talents of area artists and musicians in St. Peter’s Minnesota Square Park. Highlighting the event, now in its 28th year, is a Saturday evening concert. It’s featured a fresh backdrop in recent years with the new Minnesota Square Park pavilion and the construction of a new, multipurpose facility. A main stage is where the long list of musicians perform. A second stage features stories, more songs, demonstrations and other family-centered programs. The event is free, largely funded through grants, donations and free will offerings from an appreciative fan base and big crowds. It attracts thousands of visitors to the park for music, arts, and plenty of food and drink. Dozens of arts and craft exhibitors and a variety of food vendors are expected each year. Come one or both days. Bring the kids and the folks. Toss down a blanket or pull up a lawn chair, and prepare to be entertained. Find more at rockbend.org or at Rock Bend Folk Festival. You can also contact the St. Peter Tourism and Visitors Bureau at 800-473-3404.
